Eagles vs. #8 Mason GAME PREVIEW By MIKE LEE Eagle Contributor   The offensive line has been one of Goldthwaite’s biggest strengths this football season. The line will get a major test when the Eagles host No. 8 Mason at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Goldthwaite’s homecoming game.   “I’m sure both teams will try a few new wrinkles, but when we play Mason, it still comes down to whether you can whip the guy in front of you – and if you can do it for four quarters. That’s what kind of effort it will take,” Goldthwaite head coach Greg Proffitt said.   Friday’s homecoming activities will begin at Eagle Field with the introduction of Goldthwaite’s 1994 Class 2A state championship football team at 6:45 p.m. The homecoming activities – including the crowning of the queen – will begin at 6:55. Also, elementary school students will run through the inflatable Eagle at 7:10 prior to the 7:30 kickoff.   The Eagles (2-1) will play at home for the first time this season Friday after beating two Class 3A teams in Jim Ned and Bangs on the road the last two weeks.   The offensive line has carried the load for the Eagles, especially after multiple injuries hit the team in their second game against Jim Ned. With its passing game still trying to get untracked, Goldthwaite is getting 352 of its 370 total yards per game on the ground. That’s because of the work of center Everett Francis, guards Damon Butterfras and Travis Head, tackles William Carr and Dylan Sanders, and solid reserves Daniel Jones and Hagen Hohertz.

Mike’s Minutes by Mike Lee

...

Eagle Columnist  Last week’s Goldthwaite-Bangs football game had a little of everything.   There was a little drama – four lead changes and three ties throughout the Eagles’ 42-36 nondistrict victory.  “We had to battle the full four quarters. It took the whole 48 minutes to get it done,” said Goldthwaite head coach Greg Proffitt.  There was a little defense – just a little. Goldthwaite finished with 391 total yards, 355 of that rushing, while Bangs had 338 yards. The Eagles’ defense, after allowing two touchdowns in the final 2:48 of the first half, rallied in the second half to allow just 10 points and 117 total yards.   “We were in a new defense in the first half to stop their running,” Eagles defensive coordinator Jess Seward said. “In the second half, we put everybody back in their normal spots. As a result, we played dang good defense the rest of the way.”   There was a defensive stop by Goldthwaite at the end of the game to protect its 42-36 lead. The Dragons inherited the ball at the Eagles’ 38-yard line after Goldthwaite botched a kickoff attempt that netted a negative-2 yards.  Bangs quarterback Keegan Hall, who passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns, dropped but recovered a shotgun snap, leaving the Dragons with a third-and-10 at the Eagles’ 38. Two straight passes by Hall fell incom-

plete, and Goldthwaite’s offense ran out the final 2:37 to improve to 2-1.   “We had two chances in the fourth quarter to go two scores ahead, but we couldn’t do it,” Proffitt said. “But this group of kids, they may be down at times during a game, but they keep fighting to the end of the game.”   There were big plays on offense. Bangs pulled into a 36-36 tie on Keegan Hall’s 63-yard catchand-run touchdown pass to Cameron Castillo with 8:29 left in the game. Hall also had three other passes that went for 25 or more yards. Goldthwaite won it on halfback Joseph Paddock’s 36-yard run with 4:10 to play.   There was a last-second touchdown. The Dragons rallied for a 26-23 halftime lead on Hall’s 2-yard scoring run with only nine seconds left in the second quarter. Bangs went 66 yards in only 35 seconds to reclaim the lead as halfback Jake Gravell broke for a 28-yard run and Hall threw 33 yards to Talon Taylor.   “It was good momentum for us because those two touchdowns were into the wind with some big throws and big catches,” Bangs coach Chuck Lipsey said. “We still knew it was going to be back and forth. We hoped the last team with the ball would win, but we didn’t.”   There was a defensive touchdown. Paddock stepped in front of a Hall pass and returned the interception 31 yards for a

score that gave the Eagles a 36-29 lead with 4:19 left in the third quarter.   “The play with Paddock’s interception was the only play in three games where all 11 guys on defense did their job and took their assigned gaps, ” Coach Seward said. “JP (Paddock) baited the quarterback, and he threw it right to him. That score put us up by seven points when they (Dragons) were about to get the wind in the fourth quarter.”   There were starters out with injuries. Bangs lost its leading rusher, Seth Ross, to a shoulder inju-

ry after only two carries and 33 yards rushing. Goldthwaite was without fullback/linebacker Aris Shelton, out with a concussion. Two-way starter Kody Harris, who has a bum shoulder, played more last week, finally settling in at linebacker and making 13 tackles.   Also from the injury front, Goldthwaite’s Travis Head, who is nursing a leg injury, was able to play a lot on defense. Dylan Sanders was able to play most of the game at offensive tackle despite a knee injury.  There were backups who performed admi-

rably. Freshman fill-in halfback Quaid Seward rushed for 72 yards for Goldthwaite while backup fullback Hunter Parrish had 39 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown. Daniel Jones took Travis Head’s spot in the offensive line, allowing Head to play just on defense.   “Hunter Parrish and Jaydan West were playing linebacker, and those are two kids who have played in the secondary their whole careers,” Seward said. “Jansen Head moved from linebacker to defensive end in the second half and played really well on defense. Travis Head played on defense with a bruised leg that was still swollen, and Daniel Jones played for Travis on offense.”   There was recognition. The Eagles’ dramatic sixpoint win came in the Big Country Game of the Week as selected by the Abilene Reporter-News.   There was another win for the Class 2A Eagles against a 3A opponent. Last week, Goldthwaite beat Jim Ned 40-26.   And there was another impressive performance by the Eagles’ offensive line of center Everett Francis; guards Jones and Damon Butterfras, and tackles Sanders and William Carr. With its passing game still seeking to find its rhythm, the Eagles churned out 355 yards rushing on 55 carries, an average of 6.2 yards.  “They know we’re counting on them,” Proffitt said of his offensive line. “Any time you rush for 355 yards, your line did a good job.”   Paddock finished with 169 yards rushing and two

touchdowns on 20 carries. Quaid Seward and quarterback Jansen Head added 72 yards rushing each. Head scored two touchdowns.  “Our linemen and our backs did a great job of blocking all night,” Paddock said. “The win should help our confidence go way up. It makes us feel like we can compete with anyone.”  While Goldthwaite’s defense allowed the two touchdowns in the final 2:48 of the first half, it should be noted that the other two Bangs first-half touchdowns were set up by Eagle fumbles on their 20 and 29.   Hall threw a 16-yard touchdown strike to Dalton Johnson to give the Dragons an early 8-0 lead. After the Eagles’ second fumble at their 29, Clay Funderburg ran 3 yards for a touchdown to give the Dragons a 14-8 lead in the opening seconds of the second quarter.   In addition to Harris’ 13 tackles, Parrish made nine tackles while Paddock had eight stops to go with his interception and two pass breakups. Tackle Landon Wiedebusch made eight tackles while West had seven tackles, including two for losses at linebacker. Butterfras at end also had seven tackles with two for losses.   “Our defense bent all night, but we didn’t break there at the end when we had to stop them,” Proffitt said. “The pick six (by Paddock) was a huge momentum boost for us.”   Hall finished 9-of-21 passing for 208 yards for Bangs (1-2), with touchdowns to Castillo and Johnson.

By GES Principal DeeDee Wright   Goldthwaite Elementary would like to invite your child to become a member of the LITTLE EAGLES! This program is for boys and girls in K - 5th grades. The LITTLE EAGLES will have the awesome responsibility of supporting and cheering the EAGLES on to Victory!   Friday, September 19th, the Little Eagles will meet at the East end zone of the football field prior to the game and will precede the Eagle football team onto the field. We will sit in the bleachers at the West end of the field and will cheer the Eagles on to victory!! The Jr. High cheerleaders will lead the group in cheers throughout the first QUARTER of the game.   The Little Eagles must wear black and gold while supporting our TEAM!   We will not be going to the concession stand during the first quarter, but will have water available for our students. Also, please make sure your child goes to the restroom before the game, because once we are seated, the LITTLE EAGLES will stay in the bleachers. After the FIRST QUARTER is over, K-2nd grade parents will need to come to the bleachers to pick up your child. 3rd – 5th grade students will be released to meet parents in the stands.

Teachers who have volunteered their time will supervise the LITTLE EAGLES. Students will be expected to follow the same rules of behavior as they do at school and according to the Goldthwaite ISD Student Handbook. We anticipate that the students will be so involved in cheering for the Eagles, that misbehavior will be nonexistent or very rare. However, should a student misbehave, they will be returned to their parents immediately. Students who receive a Discipline Notice during the week of the game will not be allowed to participate as a LITTLE EAGLE for that week.   There will be no cost for your child to be a LITTLE EAGLE and no charge for them to attend the game. However, parents or the adult who is responsible for the student will need to attend the game at least through the first quarter, enter the game through the East gate and pay regular admission price.   We will meet at 7:10, September 19th, at the East end and will be going onto the field AFTER the HOMECOMING ceremony. We will run through the EAGLE across the field to the west end zone and then proceed to the LITTLE EAGLE stands. If you would like for your child to participate in the LITTLE EAGLES, meet us at the EAST end of the field on game night. Thank YOU and have a GREAT GOLDTHWAITE EAGLE DAY!

That’s NOT the Play I Called!

Pictured above are the Eagle coaching headsets made up of two Dr. Pepper cups with string tied between presented to Danny Long and Gerry Head before the Bangs football games last Friday night.

By Steven Bridges   Editor’s Note: There is an old story former GISD Superintendent Jim Bowie tells about high school football.   The story is about a fan who went to every practice and game for years watching his high school team play football. One day, the coach of his beloved team fell dead from a heart at-

tack. Needing a coach immediately, the Superintendent came to the fan and asked if he would coach the team.   “You know all the players and all the plays by heart,” said the Superintendent.   “The only bad news is that is only $400 a month to coach the team.”

The fan replied, “I bet I can come up with that. Of course I’ll coach them!” • • •   This joke is personified by two of our local superfans Danny Long and Gerry Head. Danny is the grandfather of Eagle player Kendel Hopper. Gerry is the father of Eagle coach Jeff Head and grandfather of two Eagle players, Jansen and Jae Head.   Although these two volunteer assistant coaches were not available at Meet the Eagles Night, Danny Long and Gerry Head now can feel like part of the ‘real’ Eagle coaching staff.   Long and Head have been diligently attending each practice and game sitting together and freely giving their opinion on Eagle defensive formations and offensive plays.   The duo felt they had a lot to offer the young Eagle coaching staff and players. According to them, their experience would be invaluable to the Eagles.   They generously offered their services to first-year

Goldthwaite Eagle Football Head Coach Greg Proffitt.   They told him that if he would simply supply them with headsets, the Eagle coaching staff could get the full benefit of their vast experience calling offen-

sive and defensive plays.   Before the Eagles game versus the Bangs Dragons last Friday night, two of the Eagle football players presented Long and Head with their very own coaching headsets. Of course, the headsets were made

up of two Dr. Pepper cups tied together with string.  The coaching duo good-naturedly put on the pretend headsets as soon as the game started.   Long was heard in the stands yelling at Head “That’s NOT the play I called!”

Eagle fans Danny Long (left) and Gerry head (right) put their brand new Eagle coaching headsets to work last Friday night at Bangs. The coaching duo helped coach the Goldthwaite Eagle Football team to their 42-36 victory despite some reported play-calling errors.
