Remembering Kelly Madden
It is with a heavy heart that I write this editorial. On Saturday, November 23rd, we lost a cherished member of the Golf Carting Magazine family, Kelly Madden. Kelly wasn’t just a senior staff writer; he was the heart and soul of much of what made our publication special. His passion for the golf carting lifestyle and his dedication to his craft were evident in every article he wrote and every story he told.
For nearly three years, Kelly was a vital part of our team. His enthusiasm for the golf carting community shone through in every piece he contributed. Whether he was covering the latest trends or sharing heartfelt stories about the people and companies driving this unique lifestyle, Kelly always brought a sense of authenticity and professionalism to his work. He never cut corners, always delivered on time, and consistently exceeded expectations.
But Kelly was more than just a talented writer. He was one of the kindest and most approachable people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Everyone on our team loved him. He had a way of making every interaction easy and enjoyable, and his warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on us all.
One of Kelly’s favorite professional experiences was attending the 2024 PGA Merchandise Show. He told me it was the best time he’d had in years. Meeting face-toface with the people he had interviewed over the phone, seeing their passion for the industry firsthand, and
immersing himself in the energy of the event brought him so much joy. He came back from that trip inspired, and it showed in his work.
On a personal note, Kelly wasn’t just a colleague to me—he became a close friend. We shared countless conversations, laughter, and ideas that will stay with me forever. His absence leaves a void not just in our magazine but in my life as well.
Kelly Madden will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. His legacy lives on in the stories he shared and the impact he had on our team and readers. Rest in peace, my friend. You will always be a part of the Golf Carting Magazine family.
We hope you enjoy this January 2025 edition of Golf Carting Magazine.

FROM TRACK TALK TO REALITY: THE GENESIS OF A DREAM BUILD
What started as a casual weekend conversation at the Braggin' Rights race in May 2024 quickly transformed into one of the most impressive custom golf cart builds of the year. Todd Dussault, Director of Sales at Navitas Vehicle Systems, was chatting with Paul Pryor of Angry Goat Custom Carts about building a Navitas "race" factory demo cart when inspiration struck.
"The Kart King guys from Augusta started the NASCAR themed carts," Dussault recalls, "and as a fan of NASCAR and Jeff Gordon, I immediately thought of the green flamed Nicorette car, as the color scheme was a close match to the Navitas brand." The idea resonated so strongly with
Pryor that he was on the phone to Dussault by Monday morning, eager to be part of the project.
technology, including their new dash system with a ten-inch display that communicates directly with the controller via CAN bus.
POWER MEETS PERFORMANCE: THE HEART OF THE BEAST
At the heart of the build is Navitas's new TAC3 850 amp controller paired with a 7.5kw motor, what Dussault calls their "race package." This combination, powered by a Bolt Energy 72-volt battery, delivers extraordinary performance. "On a closed circuit test track," Dussault says with a smile, "this cart will exceed 75 mph...that's crazy-fast on a golf cart. Do not try this at home."
For everyday users, Navitas offers their more practical TAC2 600 amp controller with a 5kw motor, capable of reaching 35 mph on 48-volt systems or up to 40 mph on 72-volt systems. The cart also features Navitas's latest
ARTISTRY IN MOTION: THE AESTHETIC EVOLUTION
The visual appeal of the cart comes from a collaboration of industry leaders. Paul Pryor worked with Liquid Lenny's from the Tampa Bay area to create the striking paint scheme on top of the MadJax Storm body kit. "You can see all the pearls and metallics in the green," Pryor says. "He picked it all out, blended the green into the yellow to give us some really cool poppin' flames. They kill it for us every single time; just give them an idea, and they run with it."
MODZ out of Liberty, TX, contributed significantly to
the build's racing aesthetic, providing wide steel wheels wrapped in beefy Hoosier tires, custom FS2 seats, and a matching steering wheel.
The project also included Dekomats, who created custom floor mats featuring a unique design that incorporates both American and Canadian flags, using golf cart silhouettes to represent the stars. Sound and Tuning: The Complete Package
The audio system is equally impressive, featuring SoundExtreme's latest offerings. "We're running off the Navitas head unit," Pryor details. "We've got their 6.5-inch speakers and their 8-inch subwoofer, and it rocks. For a limited number of speakers, this thing is just loud."
A special touch includes the Uncle Leroy's Custom
Tuning sticker, honoring Navitas's lead engineer who, as Pryor puts it, "makes the magic happen."
A SYMPHONY OF COLLABORATION
The collaboration between Navitas and Angry Goat Custom Carts represents a perfect marriage of performance and aesthetics.
"It was a great fun build," Pryor concludes. "We were super honored to do it for Navitas and work with them and all of our partners." The result is a cart that proves that in the world of custom golf carts, you really can have it all – speed, style, and sophistication. Just remember to save those 75 mph runs for the track.

This multipurpose utility has transformed golf carts from leisure vehicles into practical investments that serve multiple aspects of owners' lifestyles.
FIRST-TIME BUYERS' MARKET

Capozzi has a background in the aerospace industry and moved to Wellington 10 years ago. This is an affluent residential community just west of Palm Beach well known for

eco-friendly and fun way to get around.”
Quality Carts employs 4 cart experts now and was launched as a side business when Capozzi bought his first cart, customized it, and sold it for a profit. “The COVID pandemic was the catalyst for me deciding to launch a full-time cart business and we’ve been very pleased we took that step.”

Marine VeteranGolfTransforms Cart into a Cobra Kai Dream Machine!
Marine VeteranGolfTransforms Cart into a Cobra Kai Dream Machine!
Golf carts are no longer just for cruising the greens—they’ve become rolling canvases for creativity and personal expression. Whether it’s bold colors, high-
performance upgrades, or themed builds, the world of custom golf carts is growing more innovative every day. Among these, one build stands out for its homage to a cult classic TV
series: a 2019 EZGO TXT transformed into a Cobra Kai-inspired masterpiece. This cart, affectionately nicknamed "No Mercy," doesn’t just turn heads—it demands attention.
Inspired by the hit Netflix series Cobra Kai, which reignited the legacy of The Karate Kid, this build captures the essence of Johnny Lawrence’s unapologetic, no-nonsense
attitude. The show’s themes of rivalry, redemption, and relentless pursuit of excellence echo through every detail of this cart. From its sleek black body to its bold yellow accents, "No Mercy" embodies the spirit of Cobra Kai: strike first, strike hard, no mercy.
We sat down with the mastermind behind this striking creation to learn more about its journey from concept to asphalt-shredding reality.
GCM: WHAT YEAR, BRAND, AND MODEL IS YOUR CART?
A: It’s a 2019 EZGO TXT. It started as a standard cart, but I
saw the potential to turn it into something truly unique and personal.
GCM: TELL US ABOUT THIS CUSTOM BUILD.
A: This build was inspired by my 11-year-old son's love of Cobra Kai. We wanted to capture the essence of Johnny Lawrence's Dodge Challenger from the show and bring that bold, rebellious vibe to a golf cart. The body is a Black Madjax Storm with custom Cobra Kai graphics, Hellcat emblems, and a California “Cobra Kai” license plate. We even added a custom yellow underglow lighting system to make it stand out at night. The cart isn’t just for show,
though—it’s a high-performance machine that can hit speeds of up to 53 mph. We call it "No Mercy," and it’s been a blast to build.
GCM: WHAT AFTERMARKET PARTS DID YOU USE?
A: We went all out on the upgrades. The cart runs on a 70.4v Eco Lithium Battery paired with a 600amp 5kw Navitas AC conversion, which gives it the power and speed. The 10-inch Navitas touchscreen display is a game-changer; it lets me customize the performance settings and monitor everything in real-time. I added a tinted sport windshield from Allsport and a Rock LED underglow light kit to enhance its style and functionality. The wheels are 14-inch Goblins with 205/30-
14 tires from Steeleng, complete with cobra valve stem caps for that extra attention to detail. Every part was chosen to enhance the performance and aesthetic of the build.
GCM: WERE THERE ANY CUSTOM-MADE PARTS OR FABRICATIONS?
A: Absolutely. The seats and center console were handbuilt in my garage. I added LED cup holders, which are a big hit when we’re out at night. For the upholstery, I worked with Ronnie's Trim Shop in Greenville, SC. They added custom yellow stitching and piping, along with Cobra Kai patches in the backrest—it’s a subtle nod to the show that fans love. The dash was a fun challenge; I custom-made it
from carbon fiber and integrated four 6.5-inch Kicker LED speakers for a killer sound system. Old South Sign Company designed all the graphics, and they nailed the Cobra Kai theme perfectly. It’s those personal touches that make this build one-of-a-kind.
GCM: TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF—HOW DID YOU GET INTO CART BUILDING?
A: I’m a Marine veteran, and after 25 years in the soft drink industry, I was ready for a new challenge. About five years ago, I started tinkering with golf carts as a hobby. What began as a way to spend my weekends quickly turned into a passion. I love the creativity involved and the chance to meet other enthusiasts. Every build tells a story, and seeing someone’s face light up when their dream cart comes to life is incredibly rewarding. For me, it’s not just about the finished product; it’s about the journey and the connections you make along the way.
GCM: WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?
A: I’m shifting my focus toward full restorations and custom builds. There’s something special about taking an old, worn-out cart and transforming it into a unique dream ride. It’s more rewarding than just bolting on a few aftermarket parts. I’m also exploring new themes and ideas for future builds. The possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to keep pushing the boundaries of what a golf cart can be. My ultimate goal is to create carts that are not just vehicles but works of art that tell a story.
From its sleek aesthetics to its high-tech upgrades, "No Mercy" epitomizes the endless possibilities of custom cart building. Whether you’re a diehard fan of Cobra Kai or simply appreciate the art of customization, this build is a testament to how passion and craftsmanship can transform an ordinary golf cart into a one-of-akind ride.
askthemechanic
ASK THE MECHANIC ASK THE MECHANIC
Q: What should I do if my old gas golf cart won’t start?
A: Start by checking the battery connections to ensure they are tight and free of corrosion. Then, verify that the batteries are fully charged, as a low charge can prevent the cart from starting. If the cart cranks but doesn’t start, check the fuel level and confirm that the ignition switch is functioning properly. If the gas is old, replace it with fresh fuel.
Inspect the fuel filter to see if gas is siphoning from the tank through the filter. If not, there may be a faulty fuel pump or a clogged fuel line leading to the carburetor. If fuel is reaching the carburetor, remove the spark plug(s) and check the condition of the electrode. Clean the plug as needed. Hold the end of the plug against the motor and crank the engine to check for a spark.
If there’s no spark, replace the spark plug and/or the ignition coil. In some cases, internal carburetor jets may become clogged, requiring thorough cleaning. If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, it may be better to replace the jets entirely.
Q: Do golf carts have fuel injection?
A: Yes, they do! Many late-model golf carts from manufacturers like EZGO (with EX1 engine), Club Car (Onward/Carryall EFI), and Yamaha (QuieTech) feature fuel injection technology. Fuel injection provides cleaner burning, reduced emissions, smoother acceleration, and better gas mileage while eliminating the need for a choke cable.
The recommended fuel for an EFI-equipped golf cart is 87-octane regular unleaded. However, higheroctane fuel can be beneficial for heavy use, highaltitude environments, or other demanding conditions. Additionally, using a fuel stabilizer during periods of low use can help keep the fuel fresh.
Q: What maintenance should I perform on my electric golf cart before winter storage?
A: Before winter storage, ensure the batteries are fully charged and that water levels are adequate (if applicable). Clean the exterior and undercarriage to remove dirt and debris that could trap moisture. For long-term storage, place the cart in tow mode and disconnect the main negative cable first, followed by the positive cable.
To prevent corrosion, clean all battery terminals and connections, and apply a protective coating such as dielectric grease. This helps shield the terminals from moisture and corrosion during cold weather.
Q: Are there any top brands known for quality golf cart enclosures?
A: Yes, several reputable brands are known for producing high-quality golf cart enclosures, including:
1. DOORWORKS ENCLOSURES: Known for their durable construction and user-friendly designs.
2. DOUBLETAKE: Offers a variety of styles with customizable options to suit different golf cart models, including:
• Over-the-Top Enclosures: These cover the roof and sides of the cart, attaching with hooks or Velcro for easy installation and removal. Ideal for casual users needing protection from rain or wind during short trips.
• Track Enclosures: Mounted on a track system attached to the roof, these provide a semi-permanent solution, allowing users to slide the enclosure open or closed as needed. Perfect for those who frequently use their carts in changing weather conditions.
• Door Enclosures: Designed to provide a vehicle-like experience, these enclosures feature functional doors and zippered windows for ventilation. They offer premium functionality and tend to be higher-priced.
