hat do Tommy Thayer of KISS and golf have in common? They both ROCK! Having just had the privilege to talk to Tommy, I know he is a family man who loves his golf. His charity tournament is this summer and I am grateful to have him on the cover and to be able to share with you his passion for the music, the sport and the charity. Summer is a time to celebrate with family and I am encouraging golfers to hit the course during this time for many reasons. Not only for your health but the affordable factor and it’s also a great way to spend quality time together. Summer bargains and great golf discount can be found across this great State. My suggestions for getting a good deal is to book your tee times online--do the math and find out if buying a pass can save money. Don’t be afraid to make a call and find out if that high-end course you have always wanted to visit is looking for players at lower rates. And as always, Mondays through Thursdays are the most economical times to play. Even though it’s summer, be sure to cover up and don’t be shy to re-apply that sunscreen. I was chatting with a co-worker the other day considering my options –with the kids out of school, I want mine having fun and getting involved, whether it be a swimming class or golf camp--no couch potato on my watch! Some great camps to think about and get your kids in the game can be found at Tour Academy at TPC Scottsdale and the Nike LPGA Girls Golf Camp at Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler. I hope you have been reading the magazine, because if you haven’t, you have been missing out on some great stories and events. Do you have a favorite designer for suits, shoes, etc?

Definitely. I like Hugo Boss suits, slacks, and shirts. They fit my frame and are well made. I also like the fact they have a single store where you can get all the clothes. For shoes I like Hugo Boss, Allen Edmonds, and Ecco.

Aside from golf, what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? I like

to travel. It can be to somewhere far away or close by. I really enjoy going up to Prescott, Flag, or Pinetop. Arizona has really neat road trip destinations. I also enjoy working on my house. I recently bought a house that hadn’t been updated since it was built in 1980. It’s been fun remodeling it, although I’m not quite done.

What’s your take on cuddling? I like it a lot.

Who is your favorite comedian?

Vince Vaughn and the chubby guy from the Hangover movies are hilarious. 12

Boxers or briefs?

Ha! Whatever is clean. Boxers are good for lounging around in but you can’t wear them to work and then throw on gym shorts and workout in them…no support. I guess I mostly wear boxer briefs.

What is the last book you read?

Golf’s Sacred Journey, Seven Days at the Links of Utopia. I can’t wait for the movie to come out this summer.

What is your favorite course to play?

Most of the Troon Golf Courses are great. I’d have to say among them, Southern Dunes is my favorite. It has tough holes, it’s always in good shape, and it’s unique in that it is links style golf in Arizona.

What was your best golf shot ever?

I actually grew up here in Phoenix! I’m one of the few who can call themselves an AZ native.

What is your favorite sport to play and to watch?

Football is my favorite sport to watch, (Go Cardinals! ) There’s nothing like meeting your friends at a sports bar during the season.

Do you enjoy playing golf and are there any golfers in your family? I’m in the process of taking golf lessons

which I’m really excited for! My dad loves golf and has been trying to get me into it for years.

What do you feel makes this club special?

The staff is what keeps people coming to Whirlwind. Everyone is friends outside of work and I’ve never had a job where all the girls are good friends with each other. It makes a long day much more enjoyable.

What is your favorite part and least favorite part of being a cart girl? Everyone usually comes out golfing to have a good time so that makes my job fun! And I’d have to say the summers are my least favorite part of being a cart girl. When it gets over 110, nobody should be outside unless they’re by a pool!

If you weren’t a cart girl what would you be doing?

I moved to Wisconsin a few years ago for a change of scenery, so I’d probably still be living there and going to school. At this point of my life, I just want to go wherever the wind takes me and have fun being young.

What is your most memorable moment working as a cart girl? My most memorable moment that still makes me

laugh is when a woman on one of the putting greens was yelling over to me saying she lost her sandwich. I was really confused and asked “You lost your sandwich?” She yells over, “No, my sandwich, it’s a club” And I go “You lost your club sandwich?!” turns out she lost her SAND WEDGE.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on the golf course? I feel awful even saying this, but we have super clean windows in the bar area in the clubhouse, and one day a guy came in to get some beers for his buddies who were waiting outside for him and when he turned around to meet them, BOOM! He smashed right into the window and almost fell to the floor! His buddies were rolling laughing at him from the outside and he looked beyond embarrassed.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I love swimming and laying out with my friends during the summer. You really can’t beat it!

What is your favorite charity to support?

I support the ASPCA. I’ve been a huge animal lover since I can remember and I feel like sometimes the animal charities’ aren’t paid as much attention to. I also support the Melonhead Foundation which helps children and their families battling cancer.

ocal Scottsdale resident, Kent Eger is often viewed as confident and athletic; both on the course and

Raised in a golfing family in his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, Eger was introduced to the game at a young age by his father and grandfather, and started tagging along with his older brother to weekend tournaments and outings. At 30 years old, Eger admits that golf was not his first love – his sports of choice were hockey and basketball. His father passed away when he was in ninth grade, however, and his attitude changed. His motivation to continue playing competitive sports faded; except for golf. “Golf was the only thing that I kept doing after my

here is an unwritten rule that you should be able to spell the city in which you live. This usually isn’t a problem until you decide to move to Albuquerque! As one of the oldest cities in the U.S., people tend to write either ABQ or ALB and get by. I am sure the tourism board probably doesn’t care if you can spell it or not, but before you plan your visit, challenge yourself and dive into this city’s culture and history—start by learning how to spell it and what it means. (The word Albuquerque comes from the Latin words “albus” and “quercus,” meaning “white oak.” The first “r” in the city’s name was discarded over time. The original town of Alburquerque (notice the different spelling) is in western Spain near Portugal and has a population of about 8,000.) And after that is done, immerse yourself in what the city has to offer. Albuquerque’s past melds like a big pot of chili, flavored by Native American culture, 17thcentury Spanish conquistadors and padres, and the 20th-century artists who came here for inspiration. If history is not your thing, check out the world famous, annual Balloon Fiesta or the Route 66 Summerfest gala. And if sports interest you, this city has some of the best hiking, skiing, whitewater rafting and hang gliding experiences around….and then, there is always golf. Do you have your own charity or is there a charity close to your heart? I do not have my own charity, but I strongly feel every charity is important because they help those in need...whether it’s people, animals, or our planet. What was your greatest moment in your career? I have been fortunate to win championships at all levels of football. I know that at that moment each accomplishment is the greatest moment. For instance–winning two championships at Chaparral was the greatest, then winning a national championship at the University of Texas I thought would never be topped. But my memories of Superbowl were so memorable– it’s tough to say. What are you doing now? I am currently working out and trying to prepare myself as if everything were on schedule as normal even though they are not. Our team got together every day for 2 weeks to install our offense and that was a short while ago so after that I went back to working out. Most treasured item? My most treasured item(s) are the memories and relationships I have developed throughout my life as a kid, student, athlete, husband, and now father (daughter Cadence Nicole born 6-14-11). ardinals center Lyle Sendlein doesn’t put much stock in being a pretty boy offensive lineman. He isn’t looking for the gold and glitter of the NFL. Instead, he is perfectly happy doing his job, doing it well and then going home to his newborn baby. Sendlein’s love of playing football is based on a desire to be in the trenches and out of the limelight. His level of comfort in front of the camera is the polar opposite of his comfort on the field. “I don’t know about the other guys, but that’s the way I like it. I just like to stay low key,” Sendlein said. “I just like to go about my job and have fun doing it. It’s tough sometimes when we go out to eat with Larry (Fitzgerald) or Matt (Leinart) or some of those guys and you can’t even get a good meal in. Your steak might get cold or something. So yeah, I really prefer being under the radar, I guess.” Sendlein, a former standout at Scottsdale Chaparral High, burst on the pro scene with the Cardinals in 2007 and hasn’t been out of the starting lineup since. He was kind enough to take some time with AZ Golf Central recently during the Uncle Bears Celebrity Golf Charity Tournament.

What’s the top song in your iPod right now? “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean How many times a month do you get out and play golf? In the offseason I try to play as frequent as I can. During season, I never get out. Do you have a favorite course here in the Valley? I love Ocotillo. What was your favorite TV show growing up? I enjoyed Rescue 911 and Unsolved Mysteries. Who are some of the celebrities you were star stuck by? I remember when Superbowl XXX was here and I was able to participate in a football camp. I saw Herschel Walker–he was one of my favorites growing up. Who was your mentor growing up? My family has been the greatest influence in my life...especially my immediate mother, father, brother and sister. Do you have favorite quote that you like or live by? “To live doesn’t mean you’re alive.” If you could change one thing about football today what would it be? Golf Rocks! “It

seems like every professional golfer wants to play guitar and every professional musician wants to play golf.” Those are the words of the lead guitarist for the legendary rock band KISS, Tommy Thayer. He should know—he is a rocker and he knows a few of those professional golfers personally! In the history of rock, there are only a few bands that can be considered iconic. And just a handful of those are still playing today. KISS is definitely part of that elite group. Coming up on their 40th year together, this legendary rock band is easily identified by their face paint and flamboyant stage outfits. Formed in New York City, the band is known for their elaborate live performances, which include fire breathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars, shooting rockets, levitating drums and various pyrotechnics. Thayer joined the band in 2002, donning the spaceman makeup for the first time and officially took over the coveted KISS lead guitar spot on February 28, 2003. And, according to Thayer, his music career has been more than a dream come true. Born in 1960 in Portland, Oregon, Tommy grew up in the suburbs of

nights and thinking it was cheesy but couldn’t help be inspired by David Cassidy with his cool haircut and electric guitar. “It just made me want to play.” After graduating from high school, Thayer played in local garage bands and eventually formed his own, called Black ‘N Blue. In the early 80’s, Black ‘N Blue had immediate success and signed a contract with Geffen Records. In 1985, his band toured for two months as the opening act for KISS and Thayer soon befriended bassist, Gene Simmons. This was the beginning of a lifelong friendship and working partnership. Around the same time Thayer was learning various riffs on his electric guitar, his dad was taking him to play golf. Neither of them ever had a lesson, but they had fun. According to Thayer, he has gotten more serious about the game in the last 5-10 years and is trying to figure out his swing. “Anything you do, you need to be natural at it and not performing.” Thayer says. “It’s the same with guitar playing—I am just hearing the music and feeling it. And now with golf, I am learning the Zen of the golf swing. I imagine it probably works for most things in life.” Today, Thayer likes to combine his Arizona Golf Central • Volume 1, Issue 5


rock and roll career with golf. “I try to squeeze in a round at every tour stop.” But he doesn’t just play for fun. Five years ago, the President of Pacific University in Oregon contacted him to join the Board of Trustees. “I was honored to be asked and it has been an amazing experience.” He was asked to host the local golf tournament to help raise funds for the sports programs at the University. Today, the tournament is in its 5th year and known as the Pacific University Legends Golf Classic, hosted by Tommy Thayer, boasts actors, musicians and sports figures as players. Having raised a couple hundred thousand dollars that first year, it is now one of the biggest celebrity events in the region. This year’s tournament is hosting well known artists like Darius Rucker and Clint Black and will donate the proceeds once again to the various 21 sports programs at the college. Thayer was kind enough to chat with AZ Golf Central just prior to his big event.

What was your greatest moment on stage? I remember a big tour with Aerosmith a few years ago. Joe Perry joined us with Paul Stanley’s boots to jam. We were at the Forum. I looked to my left and my right and saw Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Joe Perry and couldn’t help but think, “Boy, I sure did something right.”

What is your most treasured item? Of course, my family and wife. But if I were to pick a material item, it would have to be my 1963 Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar. My parents gave it to me in 1978 as a high school graduation present. They got it at a used instrument shop, but it’s a collector’s piece now. And it has great sentimental value to me as well.

Is there a celebrity that you have been star struck by? It would have to be Jimmy Page. He came backstage once and proved to be a pure gentleman. As far as I am concerned, he invented rock and roll guitar. I am also a huge Beatles fan and would love to meet Paul McCartney.

What’s the top song in your Ipod right now? I like so many things—blues, country, classic rock, classical. I listen to anything from Led Zepplin to Katy Perry to Bach. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 1, Issue 5

What is the one thing that you want your fans to know that they might not know already? I have lots of admiration for my dad, James. He is a retired Brigadier in the Army and a great man. In 1945, he was a Captain in his company and they liberated a death camp in Wels, Austria. He is a hero to me and to those people and their families.

Who is your favorite golfer? Darren Clark. And it’s not just because he won recently. I have always been a fan of his. Although I have never met him, I like his personality. He seems like a pretty cool guy with his cigars and pints of Guinness. I have to say those European players have a little something extra going on. I was pulling for him throughout the Open and was so happy to see him win.

Do you have a favorite course and where is it? I am a member of Astoria Country Club in Oregon where I have a home. I also spend a lot of time in Southern California and enjoy Lake Sherwood, North Ranch, Sterling Hills, Tierra Rejada and Rustic Canyon. They are all public courses that are affordable and have great tracks. It’s become plainly obvious to us here at AZ Golf Central that Tommy is a true, upstanding type of guy. He’s a great rocker with a big heart for charity. His dedication and admiration to his family is refreshing. And the interest that he took with us only proves he cares about his fans. To find

Creating A Golden Focus For Great Golf! Revealing The “Real Secret” As a sport psychologist who works with golfers from around the globe, the one question that I am most often asked is this: “Dr. Winters, what do you think is the “secret” to shooting low scores in competition, especially when there is so much pressure for me to perform well? I always respond with this: If you truly want to shoot lower scores and become a “player of the game”, the best place to develop the “secret” is not in your physical swing or mechanics, but in your mind and your attitude! I am convinced the “real secret” to great shotmaking, putting and scoring is this: “You start each shot with a plan for success. Before you step in and address your shot, you must have a plan based on positive intent and a clear decision about what it is you want to do.......as opposed to what you don’t want to do! Then, you commit yourself totally to this plan, trust what you have programmed your body to do, and then step in and hit your shot.... or in other words: you simply DO IT!” This idea is so important, I want you to go back and read this paragraph again. I’m serious. Do it. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Welcome back. The point being is this: I want every golfer that I work with focused and enthusiastic about every shot they will hit! This is what I emphasize, no matter how simple or difficult the shot may be, how challenging or boring the golfing situation presents itself, or how well or poorly the golfer is playing that day. In this way, the playing focus, attitude, and mindset of the player is in ‘the present” and not distracted by what has happened in the past or what could happen sometime in the 28

future. The playing focus is on “this shot and only this shot!” This type of mindset is what I call “THE GOLDEN FOCUS.” “THE GOLDEN FOCUS” reinforces the notion that with each new shot, you are filled with enthusiasm, hopefulness, positive expectation, and belief in your ability that you can be successful, no matter what has happened in your immediate past! By using this concentrated effort on every shot, it allows you to be totally focused in the “now and new” versus the “old and bad.” (Consider this attentional focus an efficient way of being “task oriented” versus “result oriented!”). “THE GOLDEN FOCUS” also helps you to “stay on track” with your thinking instead of “derailing” yourself with thoughts and feelings of missed shots, missed putts, or uninspired play of the previous few holes. It also helps you to stay on task versus thinking about what others are doing or how you are doing compared to them. Or, it could even help you stay focused on your game versus worrying about what playing partners, teammates or onlookers may (or may not) be thinking about how well (or poorly) you are playing. The focus is about YOUR process, not on the consequences of the shot or what others are thinking or doing! I often ask my players this question: How good would your game be if every time you got over a drive, iron shot or putt, you had the feeling that “this is fun”, or “this is the shot which will put me in the groove!” How good do you think you could score if you allowed yourself to think and feel like this? The results would surprise you! What’s sad is that most amateur

golfers (and even tour players) ruin their games with ineffective thinking and unproductive attitudes. The problem is basically this: most golfers who are overly concerned about their results or score tend to live and die on each shot! They put so much extra pressure on the situation, themselves, and the outcome, that they create a mountain of negative anxiety inside their minds and bodies! This in turn, produces excessive pressure to perform appropriately and they fail to achieve normal or effective results. By simply adopting a “GOLDEN FOCUS” philosophy, every shot becomes a new and exciting challenge that makes the game of golf more enjoyable and lower scores more attainable! The following section will tell you how to create and implement a “GOLDEN FOCUS.” Creating Your Golden Focus *I want you to imagine stringing a bead of pearls. You start out with one pearl and force the string and needle through that pearl. With every new pearl, you give the same intention and focus, *string the needle through the pearl; repeat -*string the needle through the pearl; etc.--one pearl at a time. After a while, you have a string of pearls--all connected. The trick is, that you connected them “one-at-a-time” with equal focus and intensity! Your golf game can be managed in much the same way. Each shot (or putt) should be taken one at a time, with equal focus, intention, and commitment. When you do this, what usually happens is that you will become absorbed in the action and become “one” with the golf course. find that they lose count of how many pearls or shots they have strung (or shots taken during their playing round) and just “get in the process of stringing pearls”. They lose their sense of “how am I doing?” and score consciousness of golf and get into each pearl or each shot as it comes! It becomes a funny truth, but after all of the results or “pearls” have been tallied, many players find that they were so absorbed in the “process of stringing” that they became lost in the activity and had a “flow or peak performance”. They find that their score and overall play improved without even realizing it! This is similar to what happens to great players such as Phil Mickelson or Paula Creamer. When they are playing their best golf, all they are doing is simply taking each shot as it comes, and giving each shot their best focus and allowing themselves to play that one shot! This allows them to golf with a “play” focus and not be hindered by score, results, or other distractions. Phil and Paula are great players who have achieved unbelievable success at every level of

golf by playing with a one-at-a-time attitude. You too, can have success by playing your game in the same way. Both Phil and Paula have learned to play with a “GOLDEN FOCUS” which allows each of them to give every shot their very best effort in every round they play. You should too!

A Final Word Summing up, if you are frustrated or upset with your present golf game, rather than worry about your score or trying to “perfect your swing mechanics”, put a “new focus” into your bag! Make a commitment to the philosophy that on every shot you are going to give 100% effort and focus, and after the shot is over, you will live with the results and move on to the next shot and employ your “GOLDEN FOCUS” on that shot! Understand that using this type of thinking may not be easy to implement on the first day or first couple of holes of a tournament, but make sure you stay committed to this new level of concentration! The most

destructive thing that players do to shatter their confidence is to start with positive thoughts and feelings but abandon those good thoughts when things start to go wrong. Committing to using a “GOLDEN FOCUS” will help you play your best golf armed with a strategy that strives for a consistent and positive attitude towards building high self-confidence! ave you ever wondered why it is so difficult for people nowadays to sit for 30 seconds without having

But sometimes, mental toughness means NOT thinking! It means having the discipline to turn it off and turn on the game. That takes practice. But, how does one practice the art of tough thinking in an age where thinking is challenged by all the distractions? It’s the old chicken and the egg theory. Does one become a tougher thinker BY playing golf, or does one become a better golfer BY becoming a tougher thinker? Hmmm.

To me the mental side of golf has two parts. Part 1: Approaching the game. Can you put your ego aside and allow yourself to have a terrible shot in the middle of a round? Can you let even the stupid mistakes not let you get really frustrated and mess up the next two holes? It’s like life! Take it one by one…step by step….shot by shot. This is a hard thing to change, but if you can focus on scoring, rather than impressing your playing partners, you’re on the right path. Part 2. The mental ability to stay strong and committed in spite of distractions! You should be an expert at recognizing distractions since that’s what this electronically stimulated era is filled with. In golf, there are three ways to practice mental toughness. Expect to SEE shadows. Expect to HEAR: whispers, sneezing, and coughing. Expect to FEEL itches, twitches and your heart beating. 32

A Duffer’s Vortex

T

here is never really a bad reason to play golf, but sometimes there are better reasons. Being in Sedona is certainly one of the better reasons. Of course, with all that beauty around you, it is also easy to be distracted with the task at hand—getting the ball in the hole. Sedona is easily one of the most beautiful places on the earth and we are lucky enough to have it in our own backyard. But rather than blame my missed shots on the scenery, this duffer is sticking with the notion that my vortex rhythms were off! Imagine the days of our nation’s history when Teddy Roosevelt was riding horseback through the scenic wonders of America. With his proverbial ‘big stick’ in hand, he was deeming National Parks all along the way. For whatever reason, he chose to overlook Sedona-one of the world’s most scenic natural wonders, surrounded by the Coconino National Forest. It could have been a Yosemite and Yellowstone but instead, it is a beautiful city in a beautiful state. And it’s not just a beautiful city. There is history and Hollywood, hiking and shopping, and artists and vortex’s galore. And there are golfer’s who crave the shot values and scenic landscapes in between camera clicks at towering buttes that frame a lush green putting surface. Now that we have established the beauty of Sedona and learned a bit of US history, lets talk about that jawdropping splendor and exceptional challenge provided by the highly acclaimed, Gary Panks-designed, Sedona Golf Resort. Located in the heart of one of the most captivating regions of the Southwest, the thrilling 6,646-yard, par - 71 is widely considered among the world’s most unforgettable golf experiences. Winding around the famed red rocks of Sedona, each hole provides a unique adventure. Sedona Golf Resort boasts dramatic elevation changes that range from 3,960 feet to as much as 4,260 feet, offering players elevated tees, raised greens and challenging approach shots. As the course winds around Sedona’s crimson cliffs, each hole presents a unique challenge, governed by its own set of circumstances. No matter how many times you play, there’s always something surprising and new to look forward to as you golf Sedona Golf Resort. Aside from the fantastic golfing experience, you can spend countless gazing time in the first class, 17,000 square foot clubhouse. The indoor restaurant/lounge is beautifully and comfortably appointed with outstanding golf course views out of expansive picture windows. There is an outdoor patio, locker/shower areas for men and women, a complimentary driving range, a short game area with practice bunker and 2 putting greens. The pro shop is quite large and features a nice variety of golf accessories and attire. I found the layout to be player friendly, with mostly wide landing areas. The times I strayed too far left or right however, the recovery was tremendously difficult. The trick to scoring well here is in reading the greens successfully. As physics would have it in this mountain terrain, putts will generally slope away from the elevated areas and towards the clubhouse. The Pro Link GPS on all carts is helpful in providing accurate info from tee to green, but in the end, it was up to me to make adjustments allowing for uphill and downhill shots. Number five is extremely long (623-yard fairway) and the number one handicap hole, but at least it plays uphill all the way. The beautiful homes on either side are buffered by

desert areas, on a hole that leaves no choice but to grip it and rip it. Three good shots can reach the green. Hole seven plays downhill with a gorgeous mountain backdrop providing a traditional postcard view. But, if you have seen photos of the Sedona Golf resort, the picture likely was of the tenth hole. This is a drop dead gorgeous, par three that plays towards the reddest of the Red Mountains. When you approach the tee and see Cathedral Rock in the background to this 210-yard par-3, you know Gary Panks had a fun time designing this! There is plenty of room on the 13th fairway before a pond that rests on the left from about 100 yards in. It is difficult top see the fairway from the slightly elevated tee area, but I guarantee you it is there. The last par three is on the 17th and is also the shortest and most scoreable. Bunkers horseshoe around the green on three sides and there is a water hazard situated far right, but I still found plenty of bail out room. The closing hole plays a beautiful uphill approach and features a green that fronts the gorgeous clubhouse, with a water hazard to the left. There are so many scenic possibilities at Sedona Golf Resort but this is certainly a memorable way to finish a great round. Nicollete Wins 2011 Arizona Senior Open

ike Nicollete of Scottsdale won the 2011 Arizona Senior Open at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club’s Prospector Course. The tournament, sponsored by the Southwest Section PGA, was a 54-hole, individual stroke play event. Nicollete and Wade Dunagan of Tucson, who shot a final-round, even par 72, tied at 11-under par through regulation, but Nicollete, who shot a final-round 68, won the championship

on the third playoff hole. Dunagan, a 28-year golf industry veteran, is executive director of The World Golf Championships—Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana. Nicollete, 55, had 10 top 10 finishes in PGA Tour events during his career. He has worked as a golf club designer for PING since 1989. He led the development of PING’s first traditional blade irons—the S59 series. Greg Bruckner, the defending

champion, Paul Trittler of Scottsdale and R.W. Eaks of Scottsdale tied for third at 10-under. Brady Exber of Las Vegas was the low amateur and finished sixth at 9-under. The tournament, open to professional and amateurs who were at least 50 by June 7, was presented by Doctor Hoy’s with a Xing Tee serving as a product sponsor. Scottsdale's Braxton Marquez Wins 67th Arizona Open

cottsdale’s Braxton Marquez, 23, came back from a two-stroke deficit to win the 2011 Arizona Open at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club’s Prospector Course. He finished at 13-under par in the 54hole event, which celebrated its 67th year of competition and is sponsored by the Southwest Section PGA. Former PGA Tour player and Arizona State star Todd Demsey of Scottsdale, who won the 1998 Arizona Open, was runner up at 10-under. Jerrett Hamamoto, the 36-hole leader, and Eric Johnson, both of Chandler, tied for third at 9-under. Scottsdale residents Dave Yarnes and Paul Trittler tied for fifth, five strokes behind Marquez, who earned $7,500. A year ago at the 2010 Arizona Open at Desert Mountain’s Apache Course, Marquez finished third at 13- under par, a few strokes behind champion Kendall Critchfield. The former Horizon High School and Scottsdale Community College player competed in 19 events over three seasons at Arizona State and qualified for the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Previously a hockey player, Marquez didn’t start playing competitive golf until his freshman year in high school.

Marquez entered the third and final round two strokes behind leader Hamamoto, but he shot the day’s low round of 67 to win the state’s second longest running professional event behind the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Marquez posted scores of 68 and 68 the first two days. “It was just consistent golf,” said Marquez. “Lately, the golf swing started clicking. The greens were perfect. I love the course. The course was in great shape. I just had the speed of the greens all weekend. I just tried to hit fairways and greens and make putts. I knew they would drop. Today I had no bogeys; that was a big thing. It put pressure on everyone else.” Marquez birdied the second, eighth, 14th, 17th and 18th holes.

He took the lead with a par on the 11th, at which Hamamoto had a double-bogey. Hamamoto shot a final round 1-over 73. “I just didn’t make any putts today,” said Hamamoto. “It went great the first two days, and it just didn’t go today.” Hamamoto bogeyed the third hole and two-putted the 18th for par, but the double-bogey on the 11th was too much to overcome. Curt Byrum, the 2009 winner who’s a Golf Channel analyst and former PGA professional, finished ninth at 6-under 210. Jeremy DeFalco of Tucson was the low amateur, tying for 22nd at even-par 216. “I scored better than I played. nna Kim, of Chandler, took top honors at the 2011 Thunderbird Invitational at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix this past March. Kim, who was fourth in this tournament in 2010, finished four strokes better than Laura Jabczenski of Tucson and Saki Lida of Gilbert. They each shot +10 to tie for second. In the girls division for ages 15-18, Kim took top honors after she posted a score +6 (150). According to Kim, “I started playing golf because my sisters picked up the game of golf too. At first, I wasn’t too interested in playing golf on the LPGA tour, but as I got older, golf started to be more fun and now I want to become a professional golfer.” Kim gives credit to the JGAA by saying it made her become a better golfer. “The tournaments made me want to play more and I got to know a lot of junior golfers, that I am still friends with now.” Kim is also involved with the AJGA, another golf organization in the U.S. She credits them for helping her become more confident and wanting to practice even harder to become a better golfer. “AJGA has helped many junior golfers with colleges and I hope that it will help me with my college decision as well.”

When did you start the game of golf? I started golf when I was 8 years old. How old are you and does anyone else in your family play golf? I am 16 years old. I have two older sisters that play golf in college right now. Do you currently play on a school golf team? Yes, I am a junior at Hamilton High School What are your future ambitions in the game of golf? After I graduate from high school, I plan on attending college and playing golf. After I graduate from college, I want to turn pro.

Who is your favorite PGA tour professional? My favorite PGA tour professional would be Rickie Fowler, because he is a great golfer and has a good personality on the golf course. If you could pick any foursome to be a part of, who would be the other three? Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, and Anthony Kim What is your favorite tournament on the PGA tour? U.S. Open Who are your mentors or role models and why? My role model would be Jiyai Shin, because she is an amazing golfer, has a great personality on the golf course, always trying to be positive, and she practices hard to become one of the best golfers on tour. What is your most memorable moment in golf? Playing with my sisters and friends would be my most memorable moment in golf. What is the most favorite club in your bag and what clubs do you use? My favorite clubs in my bag are my short irons--between PW, 9 iron, and 8 iron, mostly because I can control my golf ball better. And I have all Ping golf clubs.

Not your father’s Cuban cigar E

ver since President John Kennedy asked his press secretary, Pierre Salinger, to quickly buy 1000 Cuban cigars before he put the embargo into effect in 1962; Cuban cigars have been the object of mystique and desire. Unfortunately, like most “forbidden fruit”, the sizzle is better than the steak. Since Russia stopped financially supporting Castro in the late 90’s, the quality of cigars has gone downhill and fast. As in any large agricultural enterprise, a lot of fertilizer, pesticides and machinery are needed. When the cash from Russia dried up, so did the funds to buy those agricultural supplies. As a result, from 1998 to 2003, Cuban cigars were of very poor quality. They were often plugged, used raw or under fermented tobacco and lacked the aged tobaccos commonly used prior to 1998. Cuba needed hard cash and behind sugar, cigars were the primary source of that cash for the government. So, they shipped everything they had; ready or not. Cuba also suffered from a mass exodus of talent too. It takes years to train Torcedores (cigar rollers) and the

best and the brightest were leaving for the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Honduras and Miami. Avelino Lara the creator of Cohiba left for the Bahamas and his own factory at Graycliff Resort; Jose “Pepin” Garcia who was the top cigar roller in Cuban and assisted in the blending of Cohiba, Partagas and Montecristo, left for Miami and his own cigar company. Thousands of top cigar rollers also left Cuba which made keeping the quality up a difficult chore. While Cuba was in decline, Cuban expatriates were steadily improving the quality of cigars coming from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras. So much so that only one Cuban cigar has been named Top Cigar in the World (as rated by Cigar Aficionado Magazine) in the last six years. Most of them have been from Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic. This is not to say that Cuban cigars cannot be great, they most definitely can; but no greater than any cigar from the DR, Nicaragua or Honduras. Cuban cigars are just “different”. Like the difference between Pinot Noir grapes grown in France verses ones grown

in Oregon. It’s the same grape, but a different outcome entirely. Cuba has a unique climate and a unique soil which gives its cigars a “Cuban” taste, wine snobs call it “terroir” or “of the soil”. It’s no better or worse than the unique taste the soil and climate of Nicaragua gives its cigars, it’s just a helluva lot cheaper and won’t result in a nice, fat fine. It all boils down to we want what we can’t have. Cuban cigars are illegal, so we want one. The high price makes them that more desirable. Unfortunately, I can guarantee that unless you personally purchased the cigars from one of the official La Casa del Habano stores around the world; it was a fake. Any cigar your “best friend” bought for you while he was in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong or wherever is most likely a fake. Yes, really. Next time someone offers you a Cuban cigar take it graciously and enjoy it for what it cost you. However, before you spend any money on a “Cuban” cigar; drive to your local tobacconist and spend that $100 on 5-20 cigars you know are real. Plus you’ll be supporting your community and not a brutal dictator. It’s a win-win for everyone. If you really want to try a “Cuban style” cigar, smoke the Oliva Serie V Torpedo. It was named #4 cigar in the world by Cigar Aficionado Magazine in 2008 with a 94 out of a 100 rating. It’s strong and flavorful, just like a well made Cuban cigar can be. Best of all, it’s around $8.75 depending on your states tobacco tax. So the next time someone offers to sell you a box of Cuban cigars that his “brother” bought while he was on vacation (no really they’re legit!); tell them “thanks but no thanks” and fire up that Oliva. Then put the cash you saved towards some golf lessons you desperately need. A self confessed cigar snob, Geoff has been marinating in fragrant smoke for over 25 years. where they have huge budgets, but still do not meet the standard of acceptability. But in most cases, dollars do yield better conditions. Be sure to know the facts about a facilities budget before you compare courses.

I

am sure most of you recognize this phrase. Joe Friday of the old TV show, Dragnet, used it often. You see, they needed to be able to asses the facts in order to make informed decisions on how to solve a crime. Well, there are crimes being committed everyday in the golf community when golfers compare course conditions and they don’t have the facts. This can cause uninformed decisions. When golfers play different courses around the valley or even down the street, they can see different course conditions during any given time. We all know that. But what many don’t know are the facts that can cause different conditions. Let’s look at some of those facts or general rules of course maintenance and see if they apply to your experiences. Be aware however, there are exceptions to nearly all of these rules.

Rule 1: Financial: The most obvious fact about course conditions is going to be financial. We are all OK with the understanding that a course which charges higher fees to play at their facility should have better course conditions. In most cases this is true. The more money a course has available, the more resources it should have to create better conditions. It’s the old adage--you get what you pay for. However, I have seen some very good conditions on courses with very low greens fees. The opposite is true as well. We have all played at a course 54

Location: Another obvious fact about course conditions is where the course is located. Most courses in the Valley of the Sun are what we call ‘in the basin.’ Those course climates are going to be very similar in regards to temperature, sunlight and humidity. Other courses in the foothills of the Valley have a completely different climate. They may have alluvial winds in the mornings or less light should their course be on a north slope. The most telling part of this difference, we all would agree, are courses in the foothills have temperatures and humidity that can be completely different than courses in the basin. And to compare courses in the foothills, you can have huge differences in how a course will perform, even when they are very close to each other. If one course is on a north slope and is 1000 feet higher than another course 2 miles away with a southwest slope, where temperatures and sunlight energies are completely different, they will perform very differently. The exception here is going to be how a Superintendent modifies their maintenance program to overcome the climate differences and therefore, put out a good product. Be sure you know the facts about course locations before you compare.

Rule 3: Soils: Does this even need to be talked about? Everyone knows that different soil types will have a big impact on course conditions. Tight soils, like clays, can hold more nutrients. However, if you have poor water quality, these soils can lock up and not allow anything to grow. If you have a modified soil, this will cause differences in how course conditions show each season. There are no exceptions here; this is science. However, with proper care, all soils can produce good turf if the Superintendents are allowed the time to aerify and amend the soils to overcome these differences. Many owners and operators deny opportunities to do proper maintenance because they

are afraid it will affect the bottom line. Someone forgot to tell them that dead turf is better at affecting their dollars than aerified turf. So be sure to know your soils before you compare.

Rule 4: Water: The differences in water around the valley are so diverse. It would be impossible to produce any kind of consistency in course management. With every different water type, there has to be a different management strategy for each location. How can you compare a course that gets unlimited fresh water because the course is on a Reservation to one that doesn’t? How can you compare a course that has clean well water to a course that has terrible well water? How can you compare a course that is using effluent or recycled water to a course that is using CAP water? How can you compare a course that pays nothing for their water to a course that pays a half a million dollars for theirs? The point is--you can’t. With every water difference, there is going to be a difference in the course condition. There are exceptions. When a course has the resources to understand the science and the impact of water and its quality, they will be better equipped to have more consistent course conditions. So make sure you know the facts about the water at that facility before you compare. There are so many other facts that can go into this that we won’t get into right now, like localized weather issues, available labor, construction deficiencies, and the list goes on. We all want to see every golf course in the best condition it can be in. And in most cases, the course you played probably was. When you play a course that has different conditions than another, just think about these basic rules and apply them to your visit. Let’s get the facts, so we too can make informed decisions.

As you would expect from this legend, the effort is exceptional. According to Palmer and ‘Arnies Army’, the favorite varietals are the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Both are loaded with character, charm, natural elegance, and an easy going style - not unlike the man himself.

VINEYARD This Cabernet is made from select vineyards throughout California’s North Coast region. The heart of this wine comes from Napa Valley’s Oakville appellation, with the remainder sourced from vineyards in Lake County. Additionally, ten percent Sonoma County merlot was blended in to soften the tannins and enhance the overall complexity and balance.

WINEMAKING The grapes were handpicked in the early morning then crushed, de-stemmed, and allowed to cold-soak at 50 degrees F for 72 hours. For added richness, color extraction and structure the grapes were pumped over twice a day. Shortly after the finish of fermentation the wine was gently pressed to help retain the fruit’s elegance, balance, and style. The wine spent fifteen months in small French oak barrels, fifty percent new oak.

TASTING NOTES The 2007 Arnold Palmer Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of almonds and plump dark cherries. The flavors of the wine hint of mocha and spiced chai tea while filling the mouth with raspberry candy, dark chocolate, and espresso. The finish has elements of dark fruit, integrated with an elegant and rounded tannin structure.
