Last major for the year is in the books.
No more till next April, so what are we going to do with ourselves? I know what I’m going to do--play more golf. I understand that Tiger’s comeback did not end well, but what I don’t understand is the dog pile on Tiger. People forget that this man has un-breakable records under that Nike belt of his. Being a father, a businessman and conscious of what I am teaching my child, I want to set examples. One example would be to show some grace and not kick someone when they’re down. So all you spiteful people--chill out!! On a happy note, I’m marrying the editor of this fabulous magazine and we decided to put together a delicious confection of all things matrimonial. The words some use to describe marriage—”hitched”, “institution”, “ball and chain”— might hint at matrimonial cynicism. Yet, we also believe in a simple fact: people are still getting married in droves. Right now, people of all ages, races, cultures and, yes, genders are exchanging rings, popping champagne and saying, “I do.” Sure, many of those blessed unions will wind up in a not-soblessed divorce court. But others will endure, change, grow and become something beautiful, something lasting. That’s what I have. This issue is filled with wedding stuff for all. Is your fiancé or you an avid golfer? Or is golf an activity you both love taking part in? Heading out to the green to shoot 9 or 18 holes is, in my opinion, a fabulous way to unwind and let loose. Especially if you throw in a couple of hard Arnold Palmers :-) For couples that share a love of golf, it’s possible to infuse this hobby into your wedding day and to do it in a chic way. If your groom is trying to convince you that a Caddyshackthemed wedding is the way to go, just say no! But there are plenty of other ways to bring a little green to your white wedding day. Consider the options within the pages enclosed. As always, we appreciate our readers and ask that if you enjoy what you read, Like us on Facebook. In the meantime, I will be on a honeymoon with the editor enjoying some European golf and tourist spots. If you would like to learn a bit more about us or buy us a gift, please visit www.jasonsusan.ourwedding.com. We will see you on the flip side of this Major event!

SLICE FREE GOLF –A BOOK TO HELP GOLFERS CONQUER THE UGLIEST SHOT IN GOLF The worst shot in golf is the slice and it haunts and frustrates millions of golfers who lose distance and ruin scores as they strive to cure this deflating swing flaw. Brian Crowell, a TV golf commentator and the highly regarded Head Golf Professional at Glen Arbor Golf Club, was once a slicer and for 20 years, as an instructor, has helped golfers cure the embarrassing “banana ball.” Crowell has creatively pulled together his knowledge and teaching techniques by publishing Slice-Free Golf, the first book entirely devoted to helping golfers conquer the slice and learn how to hit the ball farther and straighter
10
with power and accuracy. Legend Gary Player recognized the need for a book on a swing problem that affects 82% of all golfers, and he endorsed Crowell’s easy-to-follow guide. Slice-Free Golf offers three quick steps to beating the dreaded slice. Some 100 photographs clearly illustrate the right (and wrong) “Get Set”, “Swing” and “Release” keys, and 26 clever drills guide golfers along the path to banishing banana balls forever. Crowell injects humor with empathy for the longsuffering slicer, but the result of his program is a proven cure for the ugliest shot in golf. Slice-Free Golf is available in several e-book formats and in two print editions-- A black and white paperback for $14.95 and a premium full color version for $24.95. Vinnie Iniguez Where were you born?
I was born in Long Beach, CA and grew up in Downey, CA and North Phoenix.
Photos by: Joey Nugent
What do I do for a living or when I’m not playing golf?
I play golf professionally so when I’m not playing, I’m usually relaxing with my buddies, catching a movie, or visiting family in California. I love the beach!
Do you have a favorite designer for suits, shoes, etc? I’m definitely a fan of Kenneth Cole, but as long as it looks good and feels good I’ll rock it.
Aside from golf what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Vegas.
I
don’t think it gets any more fun than that.
What’s your take on cuddling?
I love it. It’s sexy and sweet when it’s spontaneous but there is definitely a time limit. A person can only cuddle for so long before its uncomfortable.
Who would you like to have with you on a deserted island? Well preferably my significant other but since I haven’t found her yet, my Boxer Caesar. What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy foursome? Wow, so many. But off the top of my head
“The Mechanic” (Miguel Anjel Jimenez), Don Cheadle, Robert De Niro and Alice Eve. We’ll have to play in LA County--they allow fivesomes. Lol
Boxers or Brief?
Optional…I live in Arizona. Haha. Boxer Briefs.
What is the last book you read?
Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia. I can’t wait for the movie--looks solid as well.
Who is your favorite comedian?
Man, it’s a toss up right now between Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride. Both are ridiculously funny dudes.
What is your favorite course to play?
My home course, ASU Karsten and “Old Downey Country Club” in Rio Hondo in California.
What was your best golf shot ever?
I made a hole in one at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen, Arizona in the summer of 2009. It was the par 4; number 8, over water, and it was incredible. It was so awesome to be able to get both the toughest shot in golf, the albatross, and a hole in one in the same swing and three days after my birthday no less. It was a very memorable day for sure.

Where did you grow up? Born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona! Which group of people did you associate most with in high school?
my co-workers, the money, being outside ( when it’s not 115 degrees), oh and the money! My least favorite part would have to be the outfits we wear.
Well, I was on the cheer squad and on the golf team, so I got the best of both worlds. I guess you could have called me a popular dork.
If you weren’t a cart girl what would you be doing?
What is your favorite sport to play and to watch?
Oh boy... this would be a tie between my co-worker getting hit in the dome with a golf ball and being punked by a golfer into thinking there was a little girl hopping over an apartment fence selling beer for a dollar to all the golfers.
What is your most memorable moment working as a cart girl?
My favorite sport to play would be golf. I’ve been playing since I was 8. But, my favorite sport to watch is football by far.... Go Cardinals!
Do you enjoy playing golf and are there any golfers in your family?
I
looooove playing golf. It’s my secret talent that no one knows about :) Yes, my whole family plays golf. In fact my aunt played in the LPGA.
What do you feel makes this club special?
They have me, of
course :)
What is your favorite part and least favorite part of being a cart girl? That’s a really hard question because there’s so many things that I love about my job... the money, meeting new people,
I’d be an
astrophysicist...
What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on the golf course?
Two guys using the golf carts as bumper cars... unfortunately management didn’t think it was that funny.
What hobbies do you enjoy?
I love playing all sports, working out, dancing, and going to happy hour with my amazing boyfriend :)
What is your favorite charity to support?
The Phoenix Children’s Hospital. They hold a very special place in my family and my heart. My dream is to someday be a stay at home mom and volunteer every day there.
What else would you like us to know about you?
I’d like to give a shout out to my amazing family and my children, Clark (my puppy basset hound) and Charlie (my amazing black lab). 14

As
their website states, disease doesn’t care about an individual’s faith or finances. It doesn’t care about family or friends. Disease pays no attention to mortgages or grocery bills, the size of a Wall Street portfolio or balance in a checking account, or whether the electricity is on or a porch light needs to be changed. The Shadows Foundation, a local, Flagstaff based, nonprofit organization, is dedicated to helping these individuals by providing services and financial assistance when they are in need. By collaborating with local businesses, seeking grant submissions and generous private donors, and facilitating fund raising events, the Shadows Foundation allocates funds and services to individuals and their families in times of greatest need. To date, Shadows has provided assistance to over 49 families and individuals residing in Northern Arizona and surrounding communities. Recently, they held their first annual golf charity outing. What a success!
They have received nothing but great feedback on not only the ambiance, design, detail and attending celebrities, but also the incredible performance by David Garibaldi that left so many speechless and cheering. The event started Friday evening with cocktails and celebrity interviews from Nick Lowery, Kansas City Chief Hall of Famer, and Keri Murphy, TV host of E-Entertainment , the Golf Channel and the TV Guide Network. Attending celebrities supporting Shadows included NFL football favorites Syd Justin, LA Rams Super Bowl XIV and Dave Kreig Seattle Seahawks. Also in attendance were actors Drew Roy, Jason London, Ryan Merriman, Rick Ravanello, Robert Adamson and Brian Krause. And who could forget the lovely LPGA ladies, Debbie Dahmer and Julie Tomplinson? Dinner included a heartfelt video and slide show of just a few of the over 49 Shadows recipients. The evening progressed with a performance called Lighting of the Heart of Hope, a live auction and finally, casino night.
Saturday morning presented a spectacular day on the green at Flagstaff Ranch Golf Course. Teams paired with celebrities found themselves challenged by not only the course layout, but also the attending celebrities. Following the tournament was an awards luncheon where first and second place winners were presented as well as a fun prize for the worst team of the day. While this event turned out to be a “must attend event 2012”, it’s main purpose was to raise funding so that it may continue to provide the services and financial help to those in Northern Arizona. Gratefully so, this event was able to raise an additional $30,000 over last year’s funding. Be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s event and visit www. shadowsfoundation.com website to see how you can help.

or those of us who are geographically challenged (i.e. most American’s), Lake Tahoe truly is a lake and straddles the border of California and Nevada. It is 198 miles northeast of San Francisco, 100 miles northeast of Sacramento and 58 miles southwest of Reno. Among the dozen or so surrounding communities, exquisite scenery and endless activities, it’s no wonder we think Lake Tahoe is one of the best spots to visit in the Southwest. In fact, it has been listed as one of the top five domestic destinations for vacationers. While incredible outdoor adventure, mountain resorts, 24-hour casino gaming and lively nightlife entertainment draw millions of guests each year, the area’s main attraction continues to be the restful silence of the wilderness and enduring beauty of the Lake. The lake itself is the second deepest in the United
18
States and the tenth deepest in the world. The water is 99.7 percent pure (about the same as distilled water). The sun shines 75 percent of the year but snowfall has been recorded in every month of the year. The first inhabitants were the Washoe Indians who migrated from the Carson Valley each summer in search of cooler temperatures, plentiful fish and wild game. In the late 1800’s, the discovery of silver in the Tahoe Basin and the logging boom nearly forever changed the shoreline and devastated the forests we have today. By 1944, Lady Luck arrived in Tahoe and shortly thereafter, skiing was introduced. When the 1960 Winter Olympics came to Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe was firmly on the map. And why shouldn’t it be? The area has just about everything a person could ask for. However, it is often perceived as eccentric and quirky.
For example, did you know that the Lake Tahoe Community College has more PhD’s per capita than any other community college in the state? Or how about the fact that one of the men (Cooli Jackson) who taught Michael Jackson his infamous moon-walking moves is a resident? Scenes from Bonanza and The Godfather II were shot at Lake Tahoe and let’s not forget that Elvis Presley used to perform regularly at the Sahara Tahoe (today known as Horizon Casino Resort). But whether it’s the unique beauty, abundance of attractions or the lifestyle that interests you, there is a reason to plan your visit to the Lake Tahoe area. And for the golfer, even more so. Visitors looking to tee it up will find 45 courses--including designs by Trent Jones Sr and Jr, Nicklaus, Palmer, Miller, Weiskopf, Fazio, Harbottle, Zoeller, and Jacobsen--all within a 90-minute drive of Lake Tahoe. And playing in the thinner air of Lake Tahoe’s 6,300 foot elevation, golfers can expect an extra boost—about 10 percent—on each shot. One of the first to visit on your trip should be the PGA Tour’s annual RenoTahoe Open. Part of the FedEx Cup series, the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno is a par 72, 7, 472 yard Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course, constructed in 1997. It is also the third longest course on the PGA Tour. Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course is the site of the American Century Championship and has been recognized as a Golf Digest’s prestigious Top 100. Bordering Lake Tahoe, it’s considered one of the country’s most breathtaking courses. Tees can reach up to 7,600 yards over manicured fairways, through pine forests and open meadows. Water on 14 holes and lightening fast greens make a lasting impression. This course was also the site of the 1985 US Senior Open and the 1980 US Public Links Championship. Located in a mountain meadow and surrounded by the High Sierras, the spectacular 18 hole Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Emerald Bay, designed by Billy Bell Jr, challenges golfers of Arizona Golf Central • Volume 1, Issue 6
all levels. The par 71 championship course is the perfect setting for golfers who want to enjoy the combination of a picturesque location with few houses and a rewarding golf experience. Within a short driving distance from South Lake Tahoe is The Golf Club at Genoa Lakes. Voted the fourth best new public course in North America in 1994 by Golf Digest and third best course in Nevada in 1995, the Lakes course is a challenging John Harbottle and Peter Jacobsen design. This resort course is a par 72, nestled in the valley of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Golf Club at Gray’s Crossing prides itself as the 2nd Audubon International Gold Signature Sanctuary in the entire State of California and has been recognized by the GCSAA Arizona Golf Central • Volume 1, Issue 6
and Golf Digest. Demanding a combination of creative club choices and tactical strategies, the traditional Jacobsen design reveals his passion for a fun, yet challenging play. Coyote Moon is a Brad Bell designed 18 hole course and nationally ranked year after year as one of the top courses in the Western United States. A treasured Coyote Moon attribute is that not a single home spoils the views of this championship course. It sits on more than 250 acres of secluded rolling hills amidst majestic pines, enormous granite outcroppings, wildflowers and beautiful trout creek. For those who believe better business is done on the fairways, Carson City offers nine year-round golf courses including designs by Jacobsen, Palmer,
Harbottle and Miller. Long considered a “Hub of the Sierra”, the thriving capital is just half an hour away from Reno and Lake Tahoe and has a unique sense of culture, charm and Wild West adventure. The Divine 9, as it’s called, offer vibrant greens, lush fairways and smoothly rolling putts. With over 70,000 yards of spectacular golf terrain, the Divine 9 courses have earned the reputation as being affordable, challenging and rewarding. For a bit of nostalgia, you might want to venture over to Old Brockway’s nine holes. This was the venue for Bing Crosby’s first two unofficial tournaments (1934 and 1935) before the celebrity tournament concept quickly outgrew the 3,314 yard course and moved to Pebble Beach. Also, the Tahoe City Golf Course also saw a fair share of famous faces, as the Rat Pack once teed off at the now municipal course overlooking the mountain town and crystal waters of Lake Tahoe. The above is just a small sampling of what is available to the golfer who makes the journey to the High Sierras. It’s definitely worth the trip. Learn How Rory McIlroy Bounced Back in the U.S. Open We all remember it so
vividly. Rory McIlroy taking a 4 shot lead in to the final round of the 2011 Masters, only to see him squander it all away on the back 9. Shot after shot, putt after putt, we watched him fold under the pressure and ultimately finish 10 shots behind the eventual winner Charl Swartzel. In the end, the magnitude of the moment was too much for Rory to handle. Fast-forward 2 months later to Bethesda, MD where the 2011 U.S. Open took place. All eyes were once again on Rory McIlroy to see how he would respond to his meltdown in Augusta a couple of months earlier. McIlroy not only exercised his demons from the Masters, but put on a clinic at Congressional by posting the lowest scoring total in U.S. Open history en route to his first major victory. “BOOYAAA!!! In your face!!!” Now I’m not sure if all of the pundits and doubters actually heard these words come out of McIlroy’s mouth, but they definitely saw his game yell at them loud and clear! How was Rory able to bounce back so quickly from that colossal meltdown that might have taken years to overcome? His mental approach that’s how! All the great players are able to handle adversity better than most. That’s what separates the superstars from the rest of the pack. Let’s break down exactly how McIlroy executed his mental dominance to handle this adverse situation. You too can use this same approach with your game to help you overcome adversity, pressure and distraction when playing a round of golf.
#1. Take ownership of your situations What impressed me the most about McIlroy was his willingness to own up to his collapse. He didn’t shy away and hide from the media. He took on all interviews and questions immediately following the event. There wasn’t any displacement of blame or excuses thrown around. Rory manned up and acknowledged his mishaps. He took ownership of his situation. This is key because it keeps you in control at all times. Straying away from making excuses or blaming outside elements when something
20
Rory McIroy goes wrong is critical to success. Try these on for size. A missed 4-foot putt: “Man… these greens are too fast!” After a bad round: “The weather was horrible! It’s impossible to play good in these conditions.” Your ball gets plugged in the bunker: “I get all the bad breaks!! Nothing ever goes my way!” It’s difficult to have success with this type of mindset. From now on take full responsibility for what happens on the course. This will keep you maintain control while playing. See if you can figure out the pace of the greens instead of blaming them for your misses. Although weather can be bad, look at inclement conditions as a challenge you want to conquer. By taking ownership of your situations you maintain control. Whenever you’re in control your confidence to succeed will be extremely high.
#2. Learn from what just happened It is important to learn from your mistakes as well as from your success. In an interview leading up to the U.S. Open Rory talked about what he learned from the events in Augusta. This experience helped him become a better player. McIlroy mentioned his tendency to get quick during competition when the pressure rises. This change in tempo is what led to bad swings and errant shots. Rory talked about getting better during this moment by getting better prepared. He practiced executing at a slower pace and made a conscious effort of walking slower and breathing slower. This preparation and execution played a major role toward his U.S. Open dominance. Get better at understanding how you respond to various situations. If you are able to hit the driver great on

the range and as soon as you get on the course it sprays right then look to see what changes. There is often more anxiety felt when actually playing then when hitting balls on the range. Anxiety will physically affect you in two ways. Tempo will get quicker and muscles will get tighter. Getting quicker when the pressure heightens may be the cause of your ball going right. Smooth out your tempo by walking and breathing at a slower pace. This will help you drive down the middle to produce lower scores.
#3. Get focused on the next task Leading up to the U.S. Open, McIlroy stated time and time again that what happened at the Masters was behind him. He learned from his mistakes and was ready to take this knowledge and put it to test. Rory also mentioned over and over again as long as he takes care of each shot (the ole adage one shot at a time) he would have much success. Hearing this type of dialogue during his interviews told me that he was prepared and ready to make a strong charge at winning his first major championship. Getting focused on what’s in front of you should be your goal every time you step on the course. Whether the task is a putt, a drive, a round or a bunker shot, you must be locked in on that moment and nothing else. Worrying about what just happened or other elements that have nothing to do with your next shot will only be a distraction. It will not help you execute the task in front of you. See how well you can let go of what just happened and focus on what you have 100% control over with your next shot. The ole saying one shot at a time may sound like a cliché, but is a vital part to every golfer out there in order to dominate. Handling adversity and bouncing back plays a major role in golf. We will all encounter a mishap or two during a round. The key is how to not let these mistakes affect your overall performance. Take a page from Rory McIlroy and use these three mental techniques to help overcome adversity. They helped him win his first major imagine what these tips can do for you!

Who was your mentor growing up? My grandfather, Herbert A. Thompson.
Aside from golf, what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Since we live in a sunny state - I love being by the pool catching up on magazines, enjoy the outdoors walking my dog, Reckon, working out and spending time with my boyfriend. For fun, I love going to the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction and supporting the HopeKids Charity Events around town. Working with the HopeKids organization,I forget all about my to-do lists, my emails and my paperwork--it’s very refreshing to see these kids smile.
What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy foursome? I certainly don’t want to offend anyone, but if I had to pick--Bob Parsons, Tom Lehman and Craig Jackson.
What is the most favorite club in your bag and what clubs do you use? I have to go with an AZ local company
Valerie Thompson Born in Tacoma, WA and residing in Scottsdale, Valerie Thompson is a true athlete. She races in the NHRA under the Pro Stock Motorcycle division. Sitting comfortably on her 2008 XB9R Buell, Thompson has most notably held the land speed record twice at Bonneville Salt Flats with a top speed of 201.01 MPH.
Her ascension in the sport of motorcycle racing has been nothing short of remarkable. In less than five years, Valerie has garnered incredible success (see www. valeriethompsonracing.com) and has even established her own team. Valerie’s accomplishments both on and off the track have led to her becoming a motorcycle presenter for the most famous auto auction company in the world, Barrett-Jackson. She is also a spokeswoman for “Val’s Pals” Children charities, most notably HopeKids. But Valerie also enjoys a slower sport—golf. And AZ Golf Central got her to slow down a bit and talk about golf and racing.
Do you have a favorite course here in the valley? My home course is Kierland Golf Club, Scottsdale, AZ. The recently renovated outdoor patio is great for the day as well as cold nights with the fireplace roaring. It’s also nice to enjoy the bagpipes playing everyday! 22
- Ping Golf Clubs. I like the 200mph ping driver. But Wilson also has a great brand.
Who got you into racing? My deep passion for speed got me into racing, but help from a few friends who suggested I take my Harley-Davidson Fat boy Motorcycle to the racetrack so I could pursue my passion safely among “True Professionals”. I started racing at my local track, Speed World, and never looked back.
Describe your dream bike? My dream bike would be the fastest bike on earth so I can set additional land speed records and with the proper safety equipment. The current motorcycle land speed record is over 352mph. I’d love to break that record!
If you could change one thing about the racing industry today, what would it be? It would have to be how to finding out how to maximize speed and safety at minimal cost. We can attract more teams to the sport if we can reduce costs and thus, dependence on deep pocket sponsors, which are rare in today’s economy.
For those that do not know you, what is the one thing that you really want them to share? Under my leathers and helmet, I am 100% girly girl! I love cupcakes and have a fetish for Christian Louboutin shoes, which I wish I could wear racing. I love keeping busy…and behind every girl there is usually a great guy. Lucas Black— A big drawl and a real swing! L
ucas York Black was born to Larry and Jan Black on November 29, 1982 in Decatur, Alabama. Without any formal acting lessons, Lucas made his film debut with a small part in the Kevin Costner film The War (1994) at the age of 11. He did a few small parts in 1995 and he was next seen in the sleeper-hit Sling Blade (1996) and then in another dark film Ghosts of Mississippi (1996). A bit of Calvin Klein modeling and mainly school and sports occupied the rest of his spare time. He scored another summer hit with The X Files(1998) and finally got a lead role in the independent film Crazy in Alabama(1999). Selective about his film roles, Lucas turned down
Actor Lucas Black experience playing competitively, and I think it helped tremendously for the role, because there are certain things-the way a golfer carries himself, his demeanor--that it would be hard for an actor to fake. All the swings and putts were mine.”
Do you have your own charity or is there a charity close to your heart? I don’t have one of my own but I support several golf foundations in Missouri.
What was the greatest moment in your career? I hadn’t really thought about it. I don’t want to come off the wrong way, but I haven’t really had that experience. I started as a kid but never really dreamed of being an actor. Now, if I were to succeed in a golf tournament, I would have that moment. I definitely have more passion about golf than acting.
What is your most treasured item? I am not materialistic…that’s for sure. My wife and I just had a little girl 9 weeks ago— they are definitely the most important thing to me.
Actors Lucas Black and Robert Duvall an opportunity to star in the movie adaptation of The Horse Whisperer(1998) due to the request of having his accent altered. In 2000, he was seen with Matt Damon in All the Pretty Horses. He has worked just about every year since then and can now be seen in the recently released Seven Days in Utopia. AZ Golf Central Magazine got to sit down with Lucas Black and he shared some insight into his views on golf, movies and life. He was proud to tell us that he is a real golfer.” I’ve had 24
What’s the top song in your ipod right now? Well, I have been putting a ‘little gravel in my travel’ by listening to Rodney Atkins’ Take a Back Road.
How many times a month do you get out and play? When I don’t work, I play every day. For the past few years, I have been doing a project a year, so for a few months I can’t play. But I still try to practice daily from April to September. I have been taking my game more serious over the last 3 ½ years.
Do you have a favorite course to play? Well, Pebble Beach and Spyglass are
great. But, in Missouri, I like Old Hawthorne and Boone Valley.
What was your favorite TV show growing up? To be honest, I didn’t really watch much TV. I started acting at age 10. But I do remember watching a few fishing shows.
Who are some of the celebrities you were star struck by? I have met a lot of sports figures and golfers but I don’t really idolize anyone. It’s just not the way I was raised. I guess you can say that I can work with great actors and not make them uncomfortable because I don’t put them on a pedestal. I don’t think people should be put in that position. Afterall, we don’t really know the person. We should just appreciate their skills.
Who was your mentor growing up? Whether we realize it or not, there are many people in our lives who mentor us all the time. We take something from each person we come across. But,definitely my dad and my father in law. And, my golf coach.
Do you have a favorite quote that you live by? I really like the one by Dick Vitale, “If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day.”
If you could change one thing about the acting world today, what would it be? There is always something in every job that we could change. But I think the movie industry is getting away from making movies like this. It’s so hard to find a G movie that isn’t animated, is entertaining and has value with good actors in it. Hollywood is too worried about strong faith messages and moral lessons because the audience might be offended. I think they are too mainstream focused. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 1, Issue 6

Stop Shanking Your Nutrition because you skipped breakfast or didn’t get enough sleep the night before. Also, pay attention to how it affects you. If you don’t normally consume caffeine, then beware drinking too much or you might get the jitters during your round.
Secret Weapons: Stevia & Zevia
The Sugar Collapse Nutrition is one of the most critical ingredients for having a successful round. It’s no secret that good nutrition is needed to feed your muscles. But, the biggest benefit is getting the proper nutrients to increase stamina, improve concentration and allow your brain to operate at full capacity the entire round. Today, more than ever, top athletes understand the importance of eating healthy to have a competitive advantage. The number one nutritional improvement you can make towards playing and living better is to learn to stop shanking your nutrition with excessive amounts of sugar. All over

be reciprocated by a devastating collapse, usually on the back nine.
Start Here Start by stripping sugar from beverages. Soft drinks should be an obvious hazard, but even “sports drinks” can be a huge problem. Just because a product has a super slick marketing campaign doesn’t mean it’s good for you. In many cases you’ll find enough sweetness to put you into a sugar coma. Read the ingredients on the label to see what you’re really consuming. In general, eliminate soda, lemonade, juices, sweetened teas,
Luckily, there are a couple of all-natural products that provide all of the sweetness you need, without the negatives effects of sugars and artificial sweeteners. First, there’s Stevia, an incredibly sweet, non-toxic sugar substitute with zero sugar, carbs and calories. Grocery stores sell this sweetener in “health food” sections in the form of liquid, powder or packets (perfect for storing in your golf bag). SweetLeaf is an excellent brand, providing 100% pure Stevia and comes in many different flavors, including orange, lemon, root beer, vanilla, chocolate, raspberry, and toffee. If you’re a soda drinker, you can satisfy those carbonation cravings, by adding flavored Stevia to fizzy water or by buying Zevia, a diet soda sweetened with Stevia and Erythritol. Zevia contains zero sugar, calories, and artificial ingredients. Flavors include: black cherry, caffeine free cola, cola, cream soda, Dr. Zevia, ginger ale, ginger root beer, grape, grapefruit citrus, lemon lime twist, mountain Zevia and orange.

Proper Setup
Proper Swing Path
If you want the perfect golf swing, training is essential. When it comes to the best advice for golf training, practice makes perfect. And the right golf training aid can help make your dream into reality. Wouldn’t you like to hit short irons into more greens? Sure! Wouldn’t we all? But that would mean you need to have more distance off the tee as well as better accuracy. Most golf swing training devices take you through the correct golf swing mechanics to help you repeat a golf swing that will hopefully hold up for 18 holes. And with the onslaught of training aids hitting the market each year, it is easy to open up your wallet in hopes of a better swing. But not all swing trainers are created equal. Dominus Golf is a developer and marketer of golf performance and skill development training products for serious golfers of all ages. They are proud to introduce their flagship product, the Tour Pure Pro, which gives golfers
• More distance and control • Better rhythm and tempo • Accuracy and consistency The Tour Pure Pro Swing Trainer has been created especially for low-to-mid handicap golfers and faster swing speeds (over 100 mph with driver). Unlike a traditional golf club, the Tour Pure Pro counter balanced, weighted swing plane indicator allows you to work out with a heavier golf trainer for maximum impact while maintaining proper form. This will increase strength and flexibility in the golf specific muscles. It will

add distance to your drives, greater control to your approach shots, and more confidence in your putting stroke. Tour Pure Pro makes your swing powerful and consistent. It gives you a clear visual understanding of where the club needs to be swung as it approaches the most critical point of the swing-the impact zone. To hit solid, accurate shots, the club face must be square or squaring at impact and the club must be approaching the ball on the proper plane. Tour Pure Pro’s unique center shafted, weight balanced design provides immediate feedback (both positive and negative) on whether you are heading toward the proper swing path. By making Tour Pure Pro a part of your training regimen and warm up, you will experience a more powerful swing. Translated to something you desire: those long par 4’s will seem like child’s play!
Three Tour Pure Pro Design Fundamentals Tour Pure Pro Helps Create Space Poor positioning at the top is often a set up for a weak down swing. As you swing to the top, Tour Pure Pro helps maintain space correctly. It moves the top of your spine away from the ball to ensure enough space between your head and
Tour Pure Pro helps you to never be too far inside or too far outside. The Tour Pure Pro puts you in check the moment you grip this innovated swing trainer. It helps to move your shoulders and the club around your body, simultaneously creating a perfect downswing by hinging the wrists and turning through the striking zone.
Tour Pure Pro Helps You Putt Better Most golfers have a tendency to not align themselves to the cup properly. That results in a push or pull of the the putt. To be consistent, proper alignment is key to the correct starting line. Tour Pure Pro is not only a swing trainer, it’s a putting aid. To get started on the target line, simply lay down the Tour Pure Pro, align yourself and practice from different distances and speeds. Best of all, you will see if you’re correctly lined up to the cup. Jeff Ritter, one of the world’s most prominent golf instructor says, “I’ve come across a lot of training aids and to be honest, many don’t quite make the cut. Every now and then, however, I’m introduced to a product that immediately shows its value helping golfers better feel the proper movements of the golf swing. The Tour Pure Swing Trainer by Dominus Golf does just that and a little bit more.” For more information or to order, please visit www.dominusgolf.com.

The View Is Good From Here…. Like you, I feel like I barely
survived the hottest summer on record here in Phoenix. It wasn’t so much the whole summer as it was the month of August! I thought for sure my clubs and cleats were going to self combust as I golfed my way through the city. But, here we are on the back nine of summer and I am enjoying the view--the Views Golf Club that is. The Views Golf Club at Oro Valley is a Greg Nash designed, 18-hole desert inspired championship golf course with
breathtaking views in a picture perfect setting. Annual membership and daily green fee play are available. This rolling 6,759 yard, par 72 course offers multiple tee placements for golfers of all skill levels. Its design was created in harmony with the natural desert surroundings offering a beautiful view of the Catalina Mountains. There is a full-service golf shop and a full-swing driving range and a complete shortgame practice area. Golf lessons are available from PGA Professionals. Recognized as one of the hidden gems in the Tucson area, The Views Golf Club (formerly known as Sun City Vistoso Golf Club) challenges its golfers with subtly elevated, large rolling greens. The golf course’s first half wanders through dry washes and arroyos, while the back nine boasts numerous elevated tee shots, dog-legs and epic mountain views. Trees dot 44
the golf course and there is also an abundance of native cacti throughout. Apparently, the reason it is a hidden gem is because until the recent past, the course has been strictly private which has precluded many of us from experiencing this green. But I am here to tell you that you should put this on your play list now. Designed in the late 80’s, the course can best be described as a shotmakers course…put it in the right spot off the tee and on your approach and you can score well. It’s the kind of course this duffer appreciates. The first two holes were easy warm ups and I actually thought I might garner a decent overall score for the day. But then came my wakeup call on the #3 par three. This is a short hole where club selection is everything--depending on pin position and wind direction. It was a tough green to read and I would say if you
can get it in two putts, you are a better man than I am. Speaking of par three’s, The Views collection is one of the best I have seen in the state and highlighted by the signature hole #7. The four par five holes are generally shorter than most, but offer many players a good shot at birdie or even better if you are a long hitter. Be careful, however, because as I quickly found out, missed 2nd and 3rd shots can put you someplace you don’t want to be or in one of the well manicured bunkers. If you happen to visit a bunker or two, rest assured the view is still nice. In general, the front nine will test your nerve and your management skills. The back nine provides
challenging higher ground shots, especially the challenging approach on the #18. Every aspect of your game will utilized on this course. The Pro Shop is staffed by PGA Professionals and features an excellent selection of merchandise and equipment. The practice facilities feature a large putting green, chipping area, practice bunker and a full scale driving range. Private lessons are available from the professional staff as well as group lessons and special clinics. Additionally, there are several golf groups available to join (women’s and men’s, both 18 hole and 9 hole). The object of those clubs are to promote interest in competition and provide fellowship through regular play and events. An accomplished trick shot artist, Hocknull, 36, birdied the first playoff hole, the par 5 18th, to edge Glen Griffith of Tucson Golf Schools and 36hole leader Mike Russell of The Stone Canyon Club. The three men finished at 6-under par after 54 holes of stroke play competition. Jon Stanley of the Jon Jacobs Golf School was fourth at 5-under, while Wes Weston of The Wynn Golf Club was fifth. Seven Southwest Professionals Players also qualified for the National Professional Championship, Craig Hocknull, Glen Griffith, Mike Russell, John Stanley, Wes Weston, Jason Witczak and Frank O’Connell, As a Past Champion, Brett Upper will also be eligible to attend the National PNC. The National PNC will be played at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses, a pair of challenging venues that overlook California’s famed Monterey Peninsula, have been selected to host the 45th PGA Professional National Championship presented by Club Car and MercedesBenz, June 24-27, 2012. It will mark the 11th time that The PGA of America’s showcase event for PGA Professionals will be contested in California, and first since 1996. Hocknull bogeyed the 18th hole for a final round 68 to get into the playoff. “There was some weather. I hit a 7-iron from 213 yards with a strong tailwind,” he said. “It found the bunker.” In the first playoff hole on the same hole, Hocknull, who lives in Gilbert, hit a 6-iron from a similar yardage. He chipped it to within 7 feet and made the putt. Russell and Griffith both made par. “It’s very satisfying to come out with a win,” he said. “I’ve been working hard on my game.” 46
Craig Hocknull A golf trick shot artist for the Outback Golf Show (www.outbackgolfshow.com), Hocknull is a Class A PGA Professional in the U.S., Australia, and Canada. “I might be the only one in the world to have that status,” he said. “Since age six being a golf pro was always my dream. His parents are both Scottish. He was born in Papau New Guinea. While he admits that trick shot demonstrations have been paying his bills, Hocknull, who played golf for and graduated magna cum laude from Jackson State University in Mississippi, would prefer to earn a living competing
on the golf course. “Hopefully, my game will start paying the bills,” he said. “My trick shots are a God-given ability and my passion is growing the game of golf through my trick shots. The Golf of Politics If you’re anything like me, I’d like smaller government. No, this is not an article persuading you to vote for fewer taxes or for government to get out of your life. It’s a plea for politicians to play more golf! Politics and golf go together like peas and carrots. We can armchair quarterback all day about how the government shall be doing their job, but for some reason it’s much more fun to critique the political figures’ golf swing. How did they vote on the debt ceiling? What about their voting record on immigration reform? Who cares! More importantly, what is their handicap? That’s what matters in politics. In Washington more than anywhere else, politics and golf have long been linked. (No pun intended). I have this theory that maybe the world would be a better place if they’d play more golf and play less politics. I mean just recently, there was much ado about an infamous foursome. Yes, it was the “Battle O-Bo” according to Golf Digest. Speaker John Boehner and Barak Obama joined Vice President Joe Biden and Ohio Governor John Kasich for a round of golf on June 18th, 2011. Boehner is listed as a 7.9 and Obama a 17 in Golf Digest’s annual recap of Washington’s power players. Lyndon Johnson once said, “One thing you better learn if you want to be in politics is that you never go out on a golf course and beat the president.” Apparently, Kasich and Biden heeded that wisdom as the suc52
cumbed to a Boehner/Obama victory as they won on the 18th hole. According to U.S News, they all enjoyed a cold drink on the clubhouse patio and spent some time chatting with service members before the president headed back to the White House. Ah, can’t they all just get along!? What a lovely scene. Maybe the way to world peace is a few rounds. Passion for golf has come from politicians for years; from lobbyists who have used it to sweeten the members of Congress, and the members of Congress have used it to gain knowledge of each other’s habits. The presidential habit of getting on the green seems to be building. Presidential candidates maybe should take note. Instead of campaigning, maybe they better get on the greens and start swinging their club instead of their votes. Obama seems to be taking that advice. He has logged more rounds of golf (32) in his first 14 months than George W. Bush did in his two terms (24). A deeply committed Bush used to focus wholeheartedly on his swing. In fact, one could tell his passion (for golf) as he stopped to comment on the looming terrorism problem. “I call upon these nations to do everything they can to stop these terrorist killings. Thank you. Now watch this drive.” Reagan’s passion for golf trumped that of his love of Congress. He commented once, “My golf-loving friend Bob Hope asked me what my handicap was. So I told him- the Congress.” Sadly, Ford should have taken Obama’s lead. “I know I’m getting better at golf because I’m hitting fewer spectators...either that, or fewer people are watching me play.” I think they are both true. But as far as presidential swingers go, oddly enough, the most avid White House golfer was Woodrow Wilson, who played twice as many rounds as Ike, which is hard to believe because Ike managed to squeeze in 800 rounds during his two years. There have been only three presidents since Taft -- Hoover, Truman and Carter – who didn’t touch the game. JFK was rated the best presidential golfer, but only because of his graceful swing. As president, he rarely played the game, but mainly hit range balls on weekends to let off steam apparently. It seems that golf provides relief for politicians with great responsibility, while still challenging their minds and bodies. But the way I look at it, golf teaches valuable lessons and offers priceless measures of a man or woman’s character, which politics needs. Politics takes place on the golf course, but golf transcends politics. Maybe if they would play more golf, we’d know who has the character to run this country. So, as the election season looms, you politicians, get out there and play more golf. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 1, Issue 6

Remember THE TRANSITION 2011 T he summer of 2011 has been anything but typical for golf course maintenance. Oh, far from it. Remember the great May and much of June, where the weather was really nice? The mornings were cool and fresh and even the afternoons were very pleasant. Remember watching the Diamondbacks on TV? Or if you were at the games, the roof was open almost every night and even some of the day games in June? Remember seeing how beautiful the Polo Verde trees were with their yellow blooms and how it got in your pool and seemed like it went on for months? Remember just last week when you may have visited a golf course and you noticed that the grass was really struggling to fill in and be more playable. All of that was a sign that the spring and summer of 2011 was anything but typical. The cooler temperatures we saw this year have really put many courses behind in their bermuda transitions. Just like the blooms in the desert, the weather slowed much of the plants around Arizona including turfgrass. April was like March and May was like April and June was like May. You get the picture. So the golf courses and their bermuda base are about a month behind too. So how does that affect your courses? When you played golf this past June, you were basically playing on a course with ryegrass that was in pretty good shape due to cooler temps. This allowed the ryegrass to
54
compete for water, light and nutrients. Anytime the ryegrass can take these things away from the bermuda, it weakens the bermuda base. The ryegrass does this all during the spring, as you would expect, however, we do expect that hotter temperatures will begin to allow the bermuda to compete with the ryegrass. This usually begins between mid-March to mid-April. That did not happen this year until mid-May to early July. The fact that the ryegrass was able to out compete the bermuda for and extra 5 to 6 weeks really weakens the base and begins to cause damage. Carts, mowers and foot traffic all contribute to the bermuda base being “rubbed” out when it can’t compete with the ryegrass. And of course the time of year when the turf really needs the higher temps to have viable, growing bermudagrass, the courses are getting trampled with the heaviest play. (March and April) It is no wonder that the bermuda this year has really taken a beating. We know that early overseeding dates, seeding rates, heavy play, fertility and water quality all play a role in the transition cycle. It is hard enough to get a decent transition with all of these factors, but to have the weather hurt you too. Well, it is that much harder to overcome. Many courses will recover this season and may have even already done so. But it is not this year that I am worried about. It is the summer of 2012 that much of this will have its
adverse effect . Bermuda grass needs to have between 90 and 100 days of good growth in order to build up stored food in the plant. This stored food is essential to the plants ability to come out of dormancy and compete and be healthy. The summer of 2011 did not allow enough days for the bermuda to store food. This will weaken the plants even further during the overseed time period and those plants will be missing next year. Don’t be surprised at having a pretty dismal transition next year. Remember when overseeding used to start around the 3rd week of October, many, many years ago? That process really helped the bermuda get established before the overseeding season. And since the courses are all about a month behind, I am sure that all the nice members and course owners will allow the Superintendents to overseed a month later so that much of these problems can be avoided. I am certain of it. Just like I am certain that we can predict the weather, months in advance to help this from ever happening. Afterall, golfers think we know magic anyway with some of the things they think we can overcome. Remember that?
