Weddings and anniversaries— whether it’s your first or your 50th, it is a time to celebrate. My bride and I have made it to our first anniversary. Some might say we are in the honeymoon stage. Some might say different. As I write this, I’m sitting on the couch across from wife. It’s Sunday afternoon and she is not wearing any makeup. I’m enthralled with a football game on TV and trying quite intently to get part of my lunch that has been stuck in my tooth. Life is good. For our one year we went to a cool bed and breakfast called the School House Inn in Bisbee (www. schoolhouseinnbb.com) and also a great historic hotel in Prescott (www.hassayampainn.com). It was a great romantic getaway with some good food and fun. If you are taking the plunge, this is the season for it. There are so many choices out there to make your special day rock. I just hope we give the brides and grooms of Arizona some great ideas in this issue. We don’t want to forget that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). In my opinion, every month should be NBCAM as well as an awareness of what else we can do to make our place a little nicer, a little easier and a little healthier. This fall, think about how you can contribute time or money to a charity or two that tugs at your heart……we have made an effort to showcase several charity ads in this issue. I must tip my hat to Europe winning The Ryder Cup in grand fashion. What a fine display of golf. And that leads us nicely to fall. Cool days are ahead. While summer may have ended (finally), there is much to look forward to--a little football, not having to golf at 4am to beat the heat, falling leaves and golfs legends descending on Desert Mountain to attend The Champions Tour-Charles Schwab Cup. Looking at the pages of this issue before sending it to press, I was reminded once again what makes Arizona Golf Central so popular- People! People! People! National golf publications are very cool, well put together and are a part of my reading every month, but they really can’t focus on the many local charity events and the People that make this great sport what it is in Arizona. My staff and I feel extremely fortunate to be in the position to give coverage to these great people and all the charity golf tournaments that need exposure. I am, by nature, a very generous person. Maybe to a fault, but No man gives at all until he has given all. No man gives anything acceptable to God until he has first given himself in love and sacrifice. This is by design--to continue the pursuit of providing our readers the most relevant and inspiring content and photography. We’re so glad you’re here with us as we continue in the path of journalistic and publishing excellence. My email box and phone are always available. I would love to hear from you. Remember get out and play some golf today and do yourself a favor by introducing a Junior to the game of golf.

DIVA GOLF Plans Phoenix Market Expansion This October

Golf Channel Host Brandel Chamblee Named Scottsdale Golf Ambassador In a renewed effort to solidify Scottsdale’s position as “The World’s Finest Golf Destination,” the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau named Golf Channel personality Brandel Chamblee the destination’s official “golf ambassador.” In this role, Chamblee, who played on the PGA TOUR for 18 years, will represent Scottsdale in a new advertising campaign targeted to avid golf travelers. In addition, he’ll write a regular blog for the bureau’s new golf-

focused website www.ilovescottsdalegolf.com which represents the destination on multiple social media platforms and serves as the spokesperson for Scottsdale golf. All of these elements will work together to present the “total Scottsdale experience” ranging from more than 200 golf courses in the area to the multiple world-class resorts, spas, nightlife opportunities, restaurants, cultural activities, outdoor adventures and more.

Practice Yoga While You Play Golf If you’d like to stay loose and focused during an entire round of golf, then this book is for you! Practice Yoga While You Play Golf by Sarah Cohn shows golfers how to avoid physical and mental tightness while playing, so that you and your swing will feel as good on the 18th hole as on the 1st. Unlike other golf exercise books, this one provides simple stretches and breathing techniques to do on the course, in order to keep you limber and your swing smooth. Practice Yoga While You Golf helps golfers design a stretching routine tailored specifically for individual body and flexibility levels. As a bonus, each stretch comes with variations that allow golfers to increase the stretch’s intensity as they progressively gain more flexibility. The book is easy to understand, with descriptions and illustrations of each stretch. Specific stretches for each body part, limbering exercises and tips to manage stress on the course are all included. Practice Yoga While You Play Golf is available through www.lulu.com for $14.95. Wholesale orders are available for $8.95 per copy directly through sarahcohnyoga@gmail.com. 10

Diva Golf, a company dedicated to serving the needs of women who want to play the game of golf, network and build both personal and professional relationships in the process, announced that it will expand into the Phoenix market this October. The first of 20 planned market expansions on the horizon, the Colorado-based company serves the fastest growing niche of new golfers in the United States who are often overlooked and underserved in a traditionally male-dominated sport, women. “In looking to select the first of many markets for expansion, we set our sights on Phoenix many months ago,” says Shawn Jardine, founder and national director at Diva Golf. “Though golf is considered a way of life here for many, we looked deeper, to uncover the potential to serve the “Divas” here - those women in the Valley who are searching for a non-threatening way to get on the course but have been fearful to do so.” Diva Golf’s weekly “Nine & Wine,” events will initially be held throughout Scottsdale and will expand to other parts of the Valley as membership grows. Each weekly event will include a short lesson, created to educate not only those who are experienced golfers, but also those who may be holding a club for the very first time. Divas will then be paired with those at their skill level to play nine holes, using the skills they have learned with the new friends they have met. Each event will culminate at the course’s clubhouse, where networking will continue with a complementary glass of wine or cocktail to unwind and celebrate the day’s accomplishments on the course. “With schedules, family commitments and long hours at the office taking up so much of our time, it can be difficult to plan and coordinate a group to get out to the course,” says Jardine. “So, that’s where we come in to take the hassles and headaches out of the equation and keep the focus on fun and enjoyment of the game.” Diva Golf events will be held at local courses, both public and private. Off-season events will be held at in door facilities so that members can keep their skills sharp and continue to improve no-matter the weather. Additional networking and social events will round out the schedule for the year. For more information on Diva Golf, member benefits, schedules and upcoming events in the area visit, www.divagolf.net. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in

Northern Illinois about 60 miles west of Chicago. I grew up in a small, rural town called Roscoe that could be the poster child for “Midwest America”…..a great place to be a kid.

Andy McKean

What do you do for a living?

I teach technology to 2nd through 8th graders at a small independent school here in the Valley. I also coach both the boys and girls high school soccer teams. I love what I do, kids are an adventure for sure….I get to laugh a lot and no two days are the same!!

Do you have a favorite designer?

Teaching doesn’t require me to stay on the cutting edge of fashion by any means!! When you see me outside of work you’ll find me in a pair of Rainbows….if I could wear flip flops every day it would be a perfect world…..shorts or a pair of Levi’s. I live a simple life!!

Relaxation?

I spend most of my extra time on my mountain bike or finding something to do outside. Went to Costa Rica last spring to learn how to surf and would move to the ocean immediately if I won the Powerball. Saturdays in the fall require 3 hours set aside for Notre Dame football!

Cuddling?

I’m not too proud to admit that I enjoy lying in a hammock along the coast with a cool ocean breeze and the sun setting….cuddling fits right in to that equation.

Which two people would you want with you on a deserted island? Two people……the Professor and Mary Ann…..

without hesitation. (Not a Ginger guy…and the Professor will keep us alive)

Which 3 people would you want for your fantasy foresome?

Bill Murray to keep things light. Rory seems like he would be impressive to watch golf, but really humble about it. Finally, I’d have to bring my dad, no question.

Boxers or briefs?

Boxers…..I stopped wearing briefs when I stopped watching cartoons.(Just to be clear…that was a while ago)

What was the last book you read?

I’d like to say “American Sniper” by Chris Kyle, but alas…I must admit that I did read 50 Shades of Grey on my sister’s recommendation. In my defense I had no idea what it was about, trust my sister’s advice in most situations, and will not be reading the rest of the series.

Who is your favorite comedian?

Gotta go with Jon Stewart but Chris Tosh is close behind.

What is your favorite course?

My favorite course is probably back in Illinois, a county course called the Ledges. A challenging course, lots of water and elevation changes.

What was your best golf shot?

I got to play Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin the year I left Illinois to move to Arizona. I was in a pot bunker that was about 8 feet deep just off the green….I had to take steps down to the bottom. Pulled out the sand wedge and holed out…the shot of the round….for an 8. 12

cart girl

A n n a

Where did you grow up?

I’m an Arizona native, having spent a majority of my childhood in Eloy and later relocating to Ahwatukee.

If you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

I would want to be a dog. My dog, Cali, is loyal, loves to play and makes people happy – and I’d want to be the same way.

W a n

What is your favorite sport to play and watch?

I love to play golf and really enjoy

watching football – specifically my Sun Devils!

Do you enjoy playing golf and are there any golfers in your family?

I’ve become an avid golfer during my time working at the Raven and really enjoy playing it with friends. No one else in my family plays golf – yet – but I’m working on them.

What do you feel makes this club special?

Working on the course makes me feel like I am on vacation. Since the course is so different from any other Phoenix course, with South Mountain in the background and the 8 billion pine trees.

What is your favorite and least favorite part of being a cart girl?

My favorite part is definitely the people. I love to meet new people and joke around and I get to do that every day. My least favorite part is that I can’t jump out of the cart and show the pros what they’re doing wrong with their swing!

If you weren’t a cart girl what would you be doing?

I would be the best Occupational

Therapist ever!

What is your most memorable moment working as a cart girl?

The people are always the most memorable parts of my day. In particular, I’ve gotten to meet a few celebrities such as the “Poker Brat” Phil Hellmuth and Alice Cooper.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on the golf course?

Some of the funniest things I’ve seen on the course have to do with how people react to bad shots. It’s pretty amusing to see a professional football player only drive the ball 50 yards, or get stuck in a sand trap, and to see their reactions. A few times I swear I’ve seen steam come out of a guest’s ears after a bad shot!

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I love to be outdoors – golfing, playing tennis and walking my dog Cali are some of my favorite things to do while I’m out of the house. I also love to cook and hang out with my friends and family.

Do you have a favorite comedian?

I like a lot of different comedians with all kinds of styles, from Louis CK to Katt Williams to Jeff Foxworthy.

What is your idea of a perfect date?

My perfect date would be some dim sum or sushi, followed by a round of golf. If the date gets awkward, we’ll at least be playing golf!

What is your favorite charity to support?

I don’t have one specific charity I prefer, but I recently joined a glow-in-the-dark kickball league supporting Singleton Moms, which supports single parents who are battling cancer. My dog Cali says, “Hi!”

Sicily

World Class Golf On The Shores Of The Mediterranean Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and lies just off mainland Italy in the southernmost region. The island bares a triangular shape and in ancient times it was called Trinacria, which means three pointed. There is much to learn about this island from its vast history to its various traditions and customs. One of the first things that comes to mind when you think of Italy is food. And Sicily is no different. Many Sicilian products are protected by DOP and IGT quality marks, making Sicily one of the queens of the Mediterranean diet, famous all over the world for the genuineness of its ingredients. Extra-virgin olive oil, juicy red oranges and the sweet grapes of Canicattì , Pachino tomatoes and Pantelleria capers, prickly pears and the olives of Nocellara del Belice are some of the excellent products that distinguish Sicilian food. Let’s not forget the famous cheeses like Ragusana and Pecorino or any of the tasty sausages and salamis. What goes better with all of the above than a glass (or bottle) of some excellent, strong and full-bodied Sicilian wine? But be sure to save room for the famous Sicilian pastries, mainly prepared with ricotta cheese and almond paste.

duffer dave The greatest golf courses in the country can be identified by avid golfers by just mentioning the state they reside in. Georgia (Augusta National), North Carolina (Pinehurst #2), Oregon (Pacific Dunes). Mention New Mexico, and the first course to come to mind is Black Mesa Golf Club, at least it is for this avid golfer. It has been less than ten years since Black Mesa opened and the course has already climbed to the top of most rankings for public access golf courses not only in New Mexico, but in the entire Western United States. Designed by architect Baxter Spann, Black Mesa is the epitome of the minimalistic mind set when it comes to designing and building a golf course. Located approximately a half hour north of Santa Fe, mother-nature provided Spann with an amazing canvass in which to create this masterpiece. The first view of the golf course comes from the highway, and it is truly awe inspiring. The setting almost looks surreal, like a painting. You can see that the course weaves its way through sandstone formations, rock outcroppings and arroyos. The landscape has such a wild, rugged look to it, the best words I can come up with to describe it is that it is simply awesome. Most golf courses have one or two holes that they consider their “signature” hole. Every hole at Black Mesa could be considered a “signature” hole. It is impossible to pick out one or two that stand out from the rest. As you play the course, you can really see how much time and effort was put in to the strategy on each hole, for every level of golfer. I don’t think I have 20

ever played a golf course that could evenly match up a scratch golfer to a high handicapper in head to head competition. The mixture of longer par fours and fives along with some reachable risk/reward holes makes for a fun and exciting round of golf. The par threes are all spectacular, some of the best on any golf course I have played. The landscape at Black Mesa is extremely rugged and raw. Each and every tee box offers an amazing and surreal view of the golf hole laid out in front of you. According to Eddie Peck, the gentleman that spearheaded the development of the golf course, there are a number of holes that were simply already there. All that was needed was to plant the grass. One of these holes is number ten, which is a wonderful dogleg left par four. Another example of a natural hole is number 16, an extremely picturesque par 5 than runs severely uphill. This hole has been dubbed “Stairway to Seven”. That nickname needs no explanation. From the tee, the fairway looks like a very small sliver of grass, almost like an airplane runway. In reality, the landing area is larger than it appears. There is a very menacing arroyo that runs down the left side of the fairway. You want to avoid this at all costs. Trust

me, I spent plenty of time down there and you will be lucky to leave with a seven if your ball finds this area. If you do hit the fairway, you have very good chance at reaching the green in two. However, it will take a very well struck second shot. The green is one of the wildest you will ever see, with humps, bumps and mounds everywhere. This is truly a classic, wild west golf hole! New Mexico has not been on the radar as a destination golf location, but Black Mesa is a golf course that can make it one. Outside of golf, there are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained. Santa Fe, which is famous for its eclectic art galleries, is located a half hour away from Black Mesa. There is also the Puye Cliff Dwellings nearby, which is a must see if traveling to this part of the country (www.puyecliffs.com) While dining, be sure to try some of the infamous Hatch green chile. El Parague in Espanola and The Shed in Santa Fe are great options to get a taste of true authentic New Mexico cuisine. If you are looking for a wonderful steak dinner close to the golf course, the Black Mesa Steakhouse, which is located in the Santa Claran Hotel and Casino, is a perfect choice. Why Do They Call It That?

Every sport has its lingo and terminology. Some of it is more familiar to the common layman than others and some of it isn’t even familiar to the participant. Golf is no exception. With such a long history and tradition, it’s no surprise that most of the terms date way back and some of the original meanings have morphed over time. Let’s take a look at some of the more common terms as well as why do we even call it golf in the first place.

Golf Contrary to many of the acronyms out there, ‘golf’ doesn’t really stand for anything (including the more famous ‘gentle only ladies forbidden’ moniker). Rather, it derives linguistically from the Dutch word ’kolf’ or ’kolve,’ meaning quite simply ’club.’ In the Scottish dialect of the late 14th or early 15th century, the Dutch term became ’goff’ or ’gouff,’ and only later in the 16th century ’golf.’

Links ’Links’ is a term that refers to a very specific geographic land form found in Scotland. Such tracts of low-lying, seaside land are characteristically sandy, treeless, and undulating, often with lines of dunes or dune ridges, and covered by bent grass. To be a true links, the tract of land must lie near the mouth of a river. From the Middle Ages onward, poor land for farming was called linksland and was commonly used for sports, including archery, bowls and golf. Because many of the early courses of Scotland were built on these type of grounds, golf courses and links have forever been associated. The term ’links’ is commonly misapplied to refer to any golf course, but a true links depends only on geography.

Fore The word ’fore’ is Scottish in origin, and is a shortened version of the word ’before’ or ’afore.’ The old Scottish warning, essentially meaning “look out ahead,” most probably originated in military circles, where it was used by artillery men as a warning to troops in forward positions. Golfers as early as the 18th century simply adopted this military warning cry for use on the links.

Bogey There are several thoughts on how this term became associated with the game, but the most repeated indicates the term ’bogey’ comes from a song that was popular in the British Isles in the early 1890s, called “The Bogey Man” (later known as “The Colonel Bogey March”). The character of the song was an elusive figure hiding in the shadows: “I’m the Bogey Man, catch me if you can.” Golfers in

22

Scotland and England equated the quest for the elusive Bogey Man with the quest for the elusive perfect score. By the mid to late 1890s, the term ’bogey score’ referred to the ideal score a good player could be expected to make on a hole under perfect conditions. It also came to be used to describe stroke play tournaments—hence, in early Rules books we find a section detailing the regulations for ’Bogey Competitions.’ Later, Bogey was used as the term of one above Par.

Par It was only in the late 1900s/early 1910s that the concept of ’Par’ started to emerge—this being the designated number of strokes a scratch player could be expected to take on a hole in ideal conditions. In this way par was distinguished from bogey. The term par itself is a standard term in sports handicapping, where it simply means ’level’ or ’even.’

Birdie Most people have come to believe that “Birdie”, meaning a score of one stroke under Par on a given hole comes from the 19th century American slang term “bird”, meaning anything excellent. The Country Club in Atlantic City lay claim to the first use, as mentioned on the USGA website. In 1962 the US Greenkeepers’ magazine reported a conversation with Ab Smith. He recounted that, in 1898/9, he and his brother, William P Smith, and their friend, George A Crump, who later built Pine Valley, were playing the par-four second hole at Atlantic City, when Ab Smith’s second shot went within inches of the hole. Smith said “That was a bird of shot” and claimed he should get double money if he won with one under par, which was agreed. He duly holed his putt to win with one under par and the three of them thereafter referred to such a score as a “birdie”.

Eagle “Eagle”, which is a score of two under par for a given hole, was clearly the extension of the theme of birds. A score of two under Par is, in some ways, a ‘big birdie’ and an Eagle is a big bird.

Albatross The ‘bird’ theme continues. Three under Par is a very rare score and an Albatross is a very rare bird, and now three under Par is generally referred to an “Albatross”.

Double and Triple Bogeys So far no particular terms for 2 or 3 or more over Par have become standard. They are just double and triple Bogeys. Some golfers use the term Buzzard for a double Bogey and some use terms from Bingo for particular numbers. For example, an eight is a ‘Snowman’ because of their common shape. In a Stableford, a null score (two over net Par) is sometimes called a ‘Blob’, because of the visual similarities. Depending upon how good you are, anything over 7, 8 or 9 will be a ‘Blowup’ or a ‘Disaster’. However, none of these have yet become recognized terms.

Mulligan Other than being a great name for a rescue dog, there are considerable debates about this topic. There are several clubs and several people who have staked claims about the origin of the term ’mulligan.’ The story most widely accepted focuses on a gentleman named David Mulligan who played at the St. Lambert CC in Montreal, Canada during the 1920s. Mr. Mulligan was a hotelier in the first half of the century, a part-owner and manager of the Biltmore Hotel in New York City, as well as several large Canadian hotels. One story says that the first mulligan was an impulsive sort of event—that one day Mulligan hit a very long drive off the first tee, just not straight, and acting on impulse re-teed and hit again. His partners found it all amusing, and decided that the shot that Mulligan himself called a ’correction shot’ deserved a better named, so they called it a ’mulligan.’ So, like most new words in our dictionary, these golf terms have developed over time and because of popular use. If it sounds good, people start using them. What we don’t know about are those terms that never made it because they did not catch on. Only time will tell if that new golf catch phrase you have been using every weekend is about to sweep the sport for the next 100 years.

SkyGolf Introduces Exciting Trade-in Program Old golf clubs accepted in exchange for new SkyCaddie Trade old clubs for a new SkyCaddie? We all love something for nothing. That’s now possible with SkyGolf’s new trade-in program, where golfers can exchange old or unwanted golf clubs or distance measuring devices for its award-winning SGX and SGXw (wireless) rangefinders. In addition, the company is offering a $50 instant rebate. Even sweeter; you don’t have to be a SkyCaddie owner to take advantage of this incredible offer. SkyGolf pioneered the category of distance measuring devices and as the dominant player; there are hundreds of thousands of older SkyCaddie models still in use. A number of golfers have capitalized and actually received their SkyCaddie for free! Barbara Leonhardt (Gaithersburg, MD) declared, “We especially liked the trade-in allowance for old clubs and for our old SkyCaddie. It was this

trade in deal that led us to trade in our old one - we wouldn’t have done it without the trade offer.”

Ranked #1 by Golf Datatech + Golf Digest Hot List Gold-Medal In a 2011 Golf Datatech survey, the industry’s leading research firm, SkyCaddie ranked #1 in accuracy among all distance measuring devices (DMD). It revealed that 94% of all serious golfers believe “exact yardage” is important to their game and more golfers use SkyCaddie than all other GPS rangefinders combined. SkyCaddie was clearly perceived the most accurate DMD, with Bushnell’s laser a distant second. SkyCaddie was named the most accurate distance measuring device twice as often as the other 14 DMD’s combined! Recently, Golf Digest honored SkyCaddie as the only DMD to receive its prestigious Hotlist Gold rating. Since the inclusion of DMD’s in the Hotlist, SkyCaddie has been the only product to receive this distinction. Using survey grade equipment that delivers pinpoint accuracy within a yard or less, highly trained SkyCaddie mappers walk every course to record thousands of points on each hole to verify the exact locations of targets, hazards, fairway run outs, major green contours, false fronts and the perimeter of every green with critical front, carry and back numbers.

How the Program Works Purchase a SkyCaddie SGXw or SGX from a qualified retailer or directly from SkyGolf.com. Go to SkyGolf.com, print the rebate/ trade-in form and fill it out. Send it in with your new purchase receipt and products you are trading in. The site includes a menu with realistic pricing on trade-in items. Tommy Fields, (Sharpsburg, GA) has owned a Bushnell for about 5 years. He said, “I like knowing the yardage to all sections of the green not just the center or flag. Plus, it’s very difficult to measure the trap in front of a flag or green. You can with SkyCaddie. Bushnell cannot do this. Additionally, 24

you can do the same, if you are hitting over water using the SkyCaddie. You know exactly the distance to avoid the water. “ Some might wonder whether they’ll receive the trade-in value they deserve. Bill Manget (Newnan, GA) relating his experience revealed, “When I sent my form in, I predicted I would get $216.75 and that’s exactly what I got.” Manget added, “I was thrilled to get the new SkyCaddie SGX. It’s a great unit. I was absolutely satisfied with the process.” John Murphy (North Attleboro, MA) went through a local retailer and said, “I bought the SkyCaddie SGX and I sent my SG5 in. I also had about three clubs to trade in, so I felt like I was getting it more or less for free. For me it was pretty simple and painless.” Purchase a New SkyCaddie SGXw or SGX prior to 12/31/12 and receive an instant $50 rebate. Buyers also receive $250 in Hotel Savings Bucks at activation, saving up to 40% off the guaranteed lowest rate available from over 15,000 hotel properties world-wide. This incredible tradein and instant rebate program is available at www.skygolf.com as well as participating green grass shops and retailers. Fairway Bliss

As long as there has been the institution of marriage, there has been an analogy made between it and something else. Not to be left behind, we are here to tell you how marriage is like golf. So what can we learn from a round of golf and how can we apply it to our marriage? • First, it isn’t easy to take your range game to the course. And it’s not easy to live your married life every day like your wedding day. But somehow, you have to do both. • When it takes you 5 putts to finally sink it, you are in agony. But if you hold on to that agony, your next shot is worthless. So don’t bring up the past hurts in your marriage or you will never move forward together. • When your shot ends up in the rough, don’t you just wish you could move it a little here or there? But golf rules don’t permit us to move our ball wherever we want to make it easier on us. Sometimes, you just have to play the ball where it lies. In marriage, sometimes your spouse is a lot like that ball and is lying in the rough. It’s not to annoy you and you shouldn’t try to change them. Instead, take them for who they are and where they are and figure out how to get out of that mess together. • Be generous also in your marriage. We all know it’s better to give than receive and we all love a gimmee on the course, so why not in real life? • What do you do with your divots? You replace them, right? If you do so immediately, the ground will heal within a day. But if you wait to replace all your divots until your round is done, it can take weeks for the ground to recover—and in some spots, it might need the groundskeeper to intervene and up to a month for new grass to grow. Harsh words are like the divots of a golf game. They leave marks and scars upon contact. Be sure to replace your verbal divots in a timely manner. The sooner you address the issue, the more quickly the healing. You don’t ever want healing to take weeks or worse, become a permanent scar.

• What if you are on the 9th hole and just having a horrible time of it? You don’t give up and go home. You invested so much in just getting to this point. Tee up one more time—that comeback shot is just around the dogleg. Trust yourself and what you have done so far. Before you know it, you will be falling in love with the game all over again. Just in the same way when that 7 year itch strikes and your marriage feels like it’s in a slump, don’t act. Take a deep breath, evaluate what you have accomplished together as a couple and remember that most of the problem is between your ears and not the sheets. Look at your spouse with a fresh approach and let yourself fall madly in love just like that first day.

Golf Smart

What if you could have a swing coach

meet you on the driving range and then travel with you throughout the 18 holes and not break the bank? Anyone interested? Everyone with your hand raised, please read on. Many golfers are baffled by the lack of development in their swing despite hours of practice. There may be minor improvements, but they generally do not affect the overall outcome of the game. Swinging a golf club is not as easy as it seems, which is why there is an ever-increasing market for products to aid your game. Some golfers have a good idea of what a legitimate golf swing looks like from seeing the pros do it. Most though, struggle to break down the mechanics or be able to make any meaningful adjustments. So the question then becomes, why are many of you not improving despite the lessons you take and all the range balls you hit? And why can't you take 30

your game from the range to the first tee? Perhaps you aren’t golfing smart. According to Mobiplex CEO and Founder, Vijay Nadkarni, “equipment manufacturers make all sorts of claims, but the truth is that all golfers are different. With the new Swing TIP Golf Swing Analyzer, the data gathered actually allows users to see their swing in

real-time and gives them the information they need to affect a change.” This new device offers instant feedback and a chance at self-correction. It’s an amazing example of how our mobile phones are changing everything in our life. SwingTIP is an innovative Bluetoothenabled 3D motion sensor device that clips onto a golf club, and transmits swing analysis to an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device and provides a personal MySwingTIP.com account to track all your information. “It creates the ultimate interactive learning experience by showing a golfer what happened, why it happened and how to improve,” says Nadkarni. But there are other devices on the market that claim to do the same thing. What makes the Swing TIP different and better? To begin with, the design engineers partnered with leading experts in golf, including Masters Tournament Champion and PGA Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

Pro Craig ‘the Walrus’ Stadler; Ray Leach, former PGA player, NCAA record-holder and instructor at Peacock Gap Golf Club; and David Butler, a 2011 Golf Digest Best Club Fitter and expert in professionalgrade golf swing analysis technology. They created a patent-pending ProView Motion Analysis™ engine that can accurately capture, analyze and digitally reproduce a video-like animation of a golf swing in three dimensions. The device will visually analyze the parts and positions of your swing to “see your swing characteristics” and understand “why the ball faded left.” Then the user will be able to review their swing alongside key performance metrics that pinpoint what happened, including Swing Path, Club Face Angle, Impact Zone, Club Head Speed and Swing Tempo. “I was amazed that SwingTIP was able to accurately capture and display my natural golf swing,” said Stadler. “With SwingTIP, you learn what your best swing looks like and feels like, and you learn how to repeat it. Engaging and fun, SwingTIP delivers the real-time, unbiased, and accurate golf swing analysis that golfers need to hone their swing to perfection.” But the design engineers went further and made the Swing TIP more interactive. To help golfers adjust, Arizona Golf Central • Volume

correct and improve fundamentals, the mobile app lets users save and review favorites, and provides instructional tips, videos and reference swings from Ray Leach. Practice session scorecards summarize performance stats and can be emailed from within the app to a friend or Pro for advice. Wirelessly upload swing data to MySwingTIP.com to see “Performance Summary and Trend” reports for any time period, and club-type. “SwingTIP helps golfers achieve greater impact at the moment of truth - when the club face hits the ball. The instant visual and statistical analysis that SwingTIP delivers makes it the most efficient, effective and fun way to master the sport,” said Ray Leach. Weighing just one ounce and with dimensions similar to a USB flash drive, the SwingTIP device won’t affect your swing. The two-part device consists of

a Bluetooth-enabled 3D motion sensor that slides into a club holster. The twoclamp holster keeps SwingTIP securely in place on the club shaft, swing-afterswing. A built-in, pop-up sight lever makes it easy to properly align SwingTIP onto the club shaft. SwingTIP is also energy-efficient, turning itself off when not in use, and staying charged through a 200-swing practice session or a round of golf.

The SwingTIP packages include:

• SwingTIP Golf Swing Analyzer Package ($129.99 MSRP) - Wireless 3D motion sensor, club holster clip (with sight-lever alignment tool), shims (for smaller club shafts), micro-USB cable for charging, and Quick Start Guide (free mobile app with electronic scorecards, and a personal MySwingTIP webpage).

• SwingTIP 2-Pack Holster Package ($19.99 MSRP) - Attach a holster clip to every club; easily move the sensor from club-to-club for uninterrupted practice. Playing golf well is a bit like chess on grass; you need to have a solid game strategy as well as the necessary skills to follow your chosen plan of attack. And to do this, you will need a solid and predictable swing that puts the ball where you want it time after time. Why not golf smart—get your Swing TIP Golf Swing Analyzer at www.swingtip.com.

19th hole Located in North Scottsdale, across the street from the main entrance of Grayhawk Golf Club (just west of Pima Rd.), Isabella’s Kitchen features handmade, homemade pizzas, pastas, salads, sandwiches, bruschetta, antipasti and much more—using fresh and seasonal ingredients. The appeal of the rustic, peasant-style cuisine rests on simple recipes and presentations allowing the fresh ingredients to take center stage. And the wine menu is populated with a variety of California and Italian selections. “We’re very eager to begin welcoming guests,” said Chef Logan Stephenson. “The food we serve covers the Italian favorites that most of us grew up with, and then we take it up a notch by preparing these classics by hand, homemade with fresh ingredients.” Styled after an Italian country bistro with an artisan’s edge, this vine-covered, 4,400-sq-ft roadside retreat houses several distinct indoor and outdoor seating options ranging from the traditional four-top to the unique fireside picnic tables on the Backyard Patio overlooking Grayhawk’s Talon course and the Valley below. The interior features a colorful, eclectic and electric blend of old and new with comfortable furnishings, numerous TVs, wood floors, wine barrels and rusted-steel accents. The dining room opens to the courtyard and exterior terraces by way of several large roll-up doors. Isabella’s signature Blue Bar wraps around a corner of the building, allowing for outdoor seating and indoor seating. Isabella’s comfortable atmosphere welcomes diners to relax and stay for a while. Dress code is casual with an average entrée price of $14. Take out is welcome. Executive Chef, Logan Stephenson, was born and raised in Louisiana. as it was the deep culinary traditions of the region. He grew up on a steady diet of farm-fresh food prepared by loved ones with uncompromising standards. Whether it was the Friday night seafood feast for the entire family cooked by his grandmother with ingredients hauled from local waters by his grandfather; or the after-church, lunches that his other grandmother routinely whipped up, Stephenson learned at an early age what great food tastes like. “I practi-

cally grew up in the kitchen,” said Stephenson. “Aunts, uncles, cousins and friends of the family would gather every week without fail to enjoy great food as well as the company. The food was always delicious. I’d give anything to relive that experience, but the best I can do is to attempt to recreate it here at Isabella’s Kitchen.” “As everyone knows, the golf business has changed dramatically in the past several years and here at Grayhawk, we are continually enhancing and repositioning our brand moving forward”, said Gregg Tryhus, developer of Grayhawk . “We think Isabella’s will be a fantastic addition to everything we have to offer not just to our guests, but the community as a whole. We’re very excited.” Isabella’s Kitchen is located at 8623 East Thompson Peak Parkway, Scottsdale, AZ 85255. Call ahead at 480-5023100 or to make a takeout order. The Golfer’s Guide to

golf chick

Marital Bliss Once again, the game of golf provides valuable lessons for life. Will these seven tips invite bliss into your home? Follow these rules, just like with your game, and your marriage will turn into a hole-inone.

Get Out Of The Sand Trap About a month ago, I was hacking away, as usual, playing golf with a dear friend. The sunset was threatening our hopeless game, and I hit my 17th hole

shot into a deep sand trap. Slowly, I stepped into the sand, and next thing you know, I’m laying flat on my back. So, my not so smooth game just became worse as my foundation slid and allowed me to collapse. Everything goes along smoothly for a while, and then one day, out of the blue, you hit a sand trap. It can be something uncomplicated like my fall, or it can be huge, even threatening a relationship. *wince* “But I ask him every day to pick up his socks…. He just won’t…. He can’t

seem to…. I’ve asked him _______ly! (insert verb ex: nice, beg, sweet, angry).” Has any of it worked? Probably not. First, I must ask if this is a hill on which you want to die? Is this an issue that you can change or is it something that you can let go? Guess what? You cannot change your spouse. So, you can choose to stay in the sand trap and continue to whack away at that ball, while sand blows in your face…OR…. you can choose to accept the situation and work with it. Maybe try a different strategy like using your sand wedge and gently pitch the ball instead of whacking it with full force.

Carrying A Load Sometimes you need to let it go. Maybe you need to take the cart for a while and put the bag down. Your bag of clubs can get pretty heavy, especially when you stash old Kit Kat wrappers, broken tees and loose change in the pockets. Are you holding on to the stuff in the side pockets or dealing with past hurts, issues or anger? Apparently, a new study presented at the 55th American College of Sports Medicine conference shows that carrying your golf clubs and walking 18 holes of golf may have a negative effect on your golf swing and performance as you play 18 holes. Finally, proof positive that all that baggage may be detrimental to your health. Not only that, but another source was noted to say that carrying your clubs reduces your height by 0.2mm! If you are carrying a load of anger and resentment, you need to park your bag, get in the cart with your mate, and talk it out. Otherwise you’ll be a short, exhausted human being.

Lost Ball? The Five-Minute Rule So, you have hit your ball somewhere in the parking lot. No, maybe it is in the field next door among the bristles or perhaps it is among the pile of leaves along the clubhouse. Hmmmm. You have five minutes to find it. GO…! Now, you may not find it in that five minutes, and if you don’t, it’s a one stroke penalty to the score. Are the conversations with your mate one-sided? Maybe she or he does ALL 34

Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

the talking and you sit there repeating, “Yes Dear..” Maybe you should try asking questions! Moreover, when your spouse gives you an answer, delve deeper. Give this a try for a minimum of five minutes to start. Ask your spouse how they feel and then listen. Listen without giving advice or reacting emotionally. Try to understand life from their perspective. Then demonstrate your understanding by summarizing what you’re hearing. If you spend at least five minutes a day asking questions and expressing genuine interest in his/her ideas or thoughts, you might find your missing ball.

“FORE!” Look out ahead! Now there are times in the marriage when you need to just take one day at a time and enjoy the ride; however, you should plan for things to do together. Take initiative to spend time with your spouse. Don’t wait for your spouse to make a date with you or to set time to talk. Suggest it yourself. Do you go out on dates? Do you sit down at the beginning of the week or month and take some time to plan? Families that play together, stay together. If you don’t do this and take initiative, “Fore” may be what you really hear; you are

Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

in “danger” zone of not connecting. Don’t let this go by. Take ACTION! Connection has to happen daily, let alone weekly and monthly. You can avoid the big problems if you take care of communicating and dating as much as possible.

Evaluate Your Swing Guess what? You have faults! Sorry to break it to you, but you are not perfect. People with strong characters are aware of their faults and work to better themselves. Now, if I know you, and if you are like any red-blooded human being, you could probably work on something in your life. To have a good swing, for example, you need to have

• Patience • Commitment • Practice • A Bit of Luck To have a good marriage, you need to have the same four things (if not more)! Maybe it’s time to evaluate your swing. Take some time and look in the mirror to find some weakness YOU possess. If you work on that, maybe your marriage will improve. Remember, character is built from humility.

Take A Mulligan When Needed When I was a child, my favorite phrase as the “Double Dutch Champion of Pueblo Road” was “Do over!” What a relief to know I could try again and better my time. When a player messes up or “muffs” his or her first try at a tee box, he/she can take a mulligan. Who would have imagined that grown-ups have this opportunity? The idea of a mulligan in marriage reminds me of GRACE. Have grace with your mate. Sometimes we need a real do over when we make a mistake. I recently read in The Grace Wakening where Chuck Swindoll calls grace “the oil that lessens the friction in marriage.” But, it must be mutual. One cannot be the ball and the other the club. They both are active and part of the work. Finally, The Spirit of the Game Unlike many sports, golf relies on the integrity of the individual to show kindness for other players. All players should behave in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy at all times. This is the spirit of the game. Like golf, in marriage (and any relationship!) kindness goes a long way to create warmth and positive feelings. Every day there are opportunities for undemanding, kind gestures that show you care. The smallest thing like a compliment or a hug can make any marriage better.

Dream the

Michael Allen

Arizona Golf Central Magazine followed Michael Allen around the Olympics Club for this year’s US Open. The 53-year-old grew up in San Mateo, Calif. He’s been a member of the club since he was 14 years old. So you could say that he knows the place better than we do. He tried in 1987 and again in 1998, when he was an alternate who didn’t get called. Can you say sweat redemption? Not this year--he tee’d it up in front of family, friends and fellow club members. He said “it was a dream come true”. As a Peninsula native and now an Arizona resident, Allen is living out his dream playing golf. He summed it up by saying “I am having a great time—am feeling more comfortable on the course and in life. I appreciate being able to play and make a living at this great game.” We sat down with Allen before the Charles Schwab Cup to ask a few questions:

In San Mateo, what was your home course? I started at San Mateo Muni and then moved to Crystal Springs…I got kicked out of there more than anyone! When I was fourteen, I was able to join the Olympic Club. It was great to be able to play the club every day. What was your greatest moment on the course? Winning the Scottish Open was a proud moment and a surprise. Those were some of my best times in Europe, in my late 20’s, seeing the world, renting a car and driving around. It was like living a novel. Another great moment was back to the US and winning the Senior PGA--a great victory.

Who was your mentor growing up? I had some really good people around me who taught me the game. I particularly remember Johnny Swansby, the owner the bowling alley. He knew everyone in golf. He had wonderful stories, but was also the guy looking out for me. He always tried to lead me in the right direction. Do you have a favorite quote that you live by? It’s better to be decisive than right. 38

Is there a charity that you like to support and why? My daughter is diabetic so that is near and dear to my heart. I was just at Sonoran Quest helping them raise money. And I have done a tournament in the past for diabetes. I like to put a lot of time and effort into that.

What makes the Champions Tour different then the PGA Tour? The guys out there on the Champions Tour are phenomenal players—they have been for 15 years or more. The course is not as difficult or as long as PGA Tour ones, but these guys can still compete and do it well.

What is something you want your fans to know that they might not already? You probably have to go on Facebook to find out about that! But actually, I am who you see.

If there is one thing you would like to change about the game of golf, what would that be? I wish more people could enjoy it. It’s extremely expensive. If we could get more people involved, that would be great. I would also like to own a municipal course so I could do my own thing there—a good restaurant and a casual atmosphere at an affordable price. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

Chicken Wings Are Only Good For An Appetizer

The golf swing

is a complex sequence of events that all lead up to one moment, which is contact between the clubface and the ball. From start to finish, there are literally thousands of intricate moves that could go wrong and keep you from hitting the ball like you want to. While there may be an infinite number of swing flaws, most problems can typically be traced to one major swing flaw that most amateur golfers suffer from. It’s called the dreaded ‘chicken wing’. Now I’m not talking about lunch at the clubhouse, I’m talking about a nasty swing habit also known as the ‘flying right elbow’. Keeping your right elbow tucked (for right-handed golfers) during the golf swing is very important if you want to form a consistent, repeatable golf swing. Your right elbow should stay relatively close to your side so you stay connected throughout the entire golf swing. This promotes a proper swing, clubface positioning throughout the swing, and angle of attack coming into the golf ball. It also helps to prevent the dreaded “over the top” move which causes most golfers to slice the golf ball. So what’s the solution? How about keeping your arms connected? Not permanently, of course, but during your swing. As with most golf tips, easier said than done. Enter the Swedge. When applied, the Swedge swing training aid will restrict the right arm from lifting out of position (flying right elbow) during the backswing, and will keep the left arm from separating too far from the body in the forward swing. And, thus, you stay connected. The Swedge is recommended by top golf instructors and was voted “Best 40

Product of 2012” by the International Network of Golf. It has the ability to correct several swing flaws simultaneously and will help eliminate your hook or slice while improving your accuracy and increasing your power and distance. It’s one of the simplest and most effective training aids on the market. This remarkable training aid is easy and intuitive to use, and reinforces a fundamental swing mechanic to help groove the proper swing path. It is also very portable and fits both right and left handed golfers. Simply tuck the small, washable, half-moon pillow into the armpit of your dominant arm and swing. The Swedge should not fall out of place until your follow through, therefore ensuring a compact and fluid swing . While many instructors will tell you to jam a towel or club headcover into your armpit, the Swedge has been researched and designed specifically to help your swing. The Swedge gives you instant feedback and helps your shoulders turn your arms instead of your arms turning your shoulders. The Swedge sells for $29 and comes in a nylon casing with a clip that attaches to your bag. The unique shape, weight, thickness, and materials that make up the Swedge are all Made in the USA. The Swedge is available in Red, Black and Blue and you can purchase your Swedge at all 85 Golfsmith locations nationwide. Or go online to see video clips and more information at www.avidgolfusa.com.

How the Swedge Works: 1. Place the Swedge under your armpit 2. Get set up 3. Relax your shoulders 4. Apply pressure towards the Swedge with your arm and elbow during your backswing 5. Strike the ball and release the Swedge as you follow through Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

Posture

golf fit

Perfect

The single most important - and frequently overlooked fundamental in golf is proper posture. Slow down! You need to pay more attention to your posture. If you don’t, you’ll have a hard time maintaining your balance and keeping the club on the desired swing path. Poor posture also leads to minimized rotation around the spine which leads to lack of extension, lack of power. Here is Jeff Ritter, one of the world’s most prominent golf instructors, demonstrating a proper golf posture exercise which will help you produce a better golf shot...and not hurt your back.

Step 1 Starting Position: Standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointed forward or slightly outward, your hands across your shoulders and your legs slightly bent.

Step 2 Take a golf club and place it behind your head, grasping one end with one hand above your head and the other end with your opposite hand in the small of your back so that your hand touches your low back. Stand up straight so the club is in contact with 3 points: the back of your head, the point between your shoulder blades and right above your tailbone.

Step 3 Gently exhale. Shift your weight onto your heels, push your hips back toward the wall behind you and hinge forward at the hips. Bend forward at the hips until your torso is midway between vertical and parallel to the floor. Allow only slight bending at the knees throughout this movement. The club must remain in contact with the 3 points on your back at all times to prevent arching.

Step 4 This exercise posture drill is the correct technique and is strongly encouraged as a pre-requisite to any golf swing. By doing multiple repetitions of this exercise, this will help make the swing simple and easy to repeat. One product that can help you set up in this athletic golf posture is the Swing Ball Pro by Smart Body Golf. You can view more information for this product at www.smartbodygolf.com.

Companies left and right are taking part in the golf fashion revolution. They have designed and marketed just about everything you could think of—pants, shirts, socks, hats, shoes, etc. Everything but the belt. Prescott Mann The JGAA is a great organization and the talented youth that golf through their program are impressive. AZ Golf Central Magazine is always honored and intrigued to meet these young upstarts and this issue is no different. According to Tom Cunningham of the JGAA, “Prescott Mann is a very active young man who not only plays golf well but also works part time at McCormick Ranch Golf Club while going to school”. This past summer, Mann recorded a rare Double Eagle on a par 4 hole at Raven Golf Club and qualified for the Junior World Championship. Mann says he “started playing golf in my grandpa’s backyard when I was 4. He taught me everything I know about golf and was a huge influence in my life growing up. I started playing JGAA when I was 11 and had so much fun playing competitive golf and meeting new people.”

for your health

Find Supermarket Support Making healthy food choices at home starts with the choices you make at the supermarket. With over 7,000 food items to choose from, grocery shopping can be overwhelming and challenging. Although it may seem easier to dine out, many restaurants are quite costly. The average price to dine out is $12 per person per meal. In contrast, it costs about $5 per person per meal to dine at home. That means if you eat at home instead of dine out for 1 meal every week, you would save $364 per person per year! In addition, most restaurant food doesn’t compare to the nutritional benefits of having fresh, whole foods from home. The same problem applies to fast food joints, vending machines and street vendors. Although they may provide more convenient options, they’re usually processed, high in sugar and low in nutrients. Luckily, with a little supermarket support, grocery shopping can maximize your health, while minimizing the impact on your budget.

Shopping Tips for Supermarket Success Learn several simple grocery shopping tips and you’ll find it easier to havehealthy foods on hand. Grab a cart and let’s shop smart!

1) MAKE A LIST Save time making multiple trips to the store by creating a grocery list of the items you need. Having a plan makes it easier to eat well, prevents you from stocking the cart with junk food and helps keep you within your budget!

2) INCLUDE LITTLE HELPERS Teaching kids to eat more nutritious foods starts with involving them when shopping. Encourage them to read labels, add food to the cart, and find ingredients on your list. Being included in the process helps kids develop more awareness for nutrition and gets them excited to eat healthier.

3) READ FOOD LABELS Focus on the ingredients listed. Less is best! Look for: minimal ingredients, whole foods & low sugar content (less than 4 grams per serving) Avoid: low-fat, non-fat, low-calorie, words ending in “-ose”

4) SHOP THE PERIMETER Shop the perimeter or outer walls of the store to fill your cart with nutrient-packed, whole foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, yogurt, cheese, chicken, etc., especially portable ones like apples, bananas and carrots. This helps keep tempting treats out of sight and out of mind!

5) BUY IN BULK Stock up on frozen fruit and vegetables, so you always have something healthy at home. You can also buy dried ingredients in bulk. Not only is this cheaper, but it can help you stick to the perimeter during the rest of your grocery shopping trips.

The ANNIKA Academy: Learn from a Golf Legend Despite our state’s well-earned reputation as a golf hotbed, you’d be hardpressed to find many who realize one of the sport’s greatest ball strikers has significant ties to the desert. Annika Sorenstam, LPGA legend and 10-time major champion, was an All-American at U of A during the early 1990s. A decade later, she became the first woman to shoot 59 in a professional golf tournament en route to victory at the 2001 Standard Register PING at Phoenix’s Moon Valley C.C. The former Wildcat stepped away from competitive golf while at the top of her game in 2008 but hasn’t looked back, turning her attention to raising two young children and a diverse array of projects. They include her ANNIKA Foundation (www.annikafoundation.org) which is devoted to a host of health and wellness initiatives for kids, and ANNIKA Academy (www.theannikaacademy.com). The ANNIKA Academy is a state-ofthe-art, boutique golf instruction and fitness facility at Orlando’s renowned Reunion Resort. It opened in 2007 as a platform to share Annika’s passion for golf and fitness. The Academy offers an exceptional opportunity to learn from the same teachers who coached Annika during her storied career. For example, lead instructor Henri Reis has been her golf coach since 1987. He played an integral role in honing the eminently repeatable swing Annika employed while winning eight Rolex Player of the Year awards. Annika’s personal trainer, Kai Fusser, is also intimately involved, teaching proven cardio and core-strengthening exercises designed to translate to more power on the course. This heavy emphasis on fitness, conditioning and nutrition is a significant differentiator from competitors and, when combined with 50

tried and true swing techniques, allows players of any age, gender and skill level to reach their potential. “The ANNIKA Academy presents a one-of-a-kind opportunity for golfers to learn the game from the teachers who were so dedicated and influential during my career,” says Annika, winner of 72 LPGA events during her legendary career. “The attention we give to all aspects of the swing, along with club fitting and fitness, provides a truly unique, holistic approach to instruction.” One of only 15 certified Callaway Performance Centers in the country, the Academy offers a diverse menu of custom-tailored corporate packages, individualized golf instruction, personalized fitness programs, club fitting and even opportunities to play with Annika. New to the roster in 2012 is the ‘Player’s Package.’ The program includes three hours of instruction on three consecutive days; 54 holes of golf; and full-service breakfast daily. Groups are limited to no more than eight guests, fostering an intimate guestto-instructor ratio and environment conducive to learning. Prices start at $1,900 per person. Casting Your Vote

– The importance of voting in America cannot be overstated. A lot of blood has been shed through American history so that you have the right and privilege to vote. The United States is a constitutional republic. Americans democratically elect their leaders, who in turn represent them in the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government. Our leaders make, enforce and judge laws that impact our health, religion, money and freedoms. Many of these issues are also voted on directly during elections. It is therefore important to vote to have your say about what happens to you. Choose your leaders wisely. Politicians make laws determining the legality of issues like abortion, capital punishment, gay rights, civil rights and religion. Chief

executives appoint judges and justices. Supreme Court justices serve for life. A president you elect today may appoint a justice who decides American social policy for a generation. Our leaders also decide policy on issues like national security, civil liberties and the environment. If you care about these issues, you must vote. Many voters who care little about social issues care a great deal about their financial benefits. The politicians we elect decide how much we pay in taxes and how that money is spent. Bond issues and propositions on the ballot determine whether your property taxes or sales taxes will rise. Health care, Social Security and defense spending are enormous financial strains on our economy. Vote for leaders and measures that will spend money the way you want it spent. Every vote has significance. Several elections have been decided by a single vote. In a close presidential election, the winner is actually decided by a small number of voters in swing states. The 2000 presidential election came down to a handful of ballots in Florida. It is important to vote for America›s future potential. Ballots you cast today will impact your children, grandchildren and all the generations that follow. Vote to improve the world they will live in. Voting also sets a good example for your kids. If you don›t vote, you have no right to complain about the way politicians spend your money.

Feeling The Need For

Speed

“Hitting a ball far is controlled aggression and timing is key. You need to be amped up and in control. You have to know how to use your energy”, says 30 year old, professional long driver Maurice Allen. After an injury ended his sprinting career at the doorstep of the Olympics, Allen needed an outlet to feed his appetite for competition. He found that outlet on a driving range. Now, just a little over two years after picking up the game, he counts himself among the world’s best long drivers. He proudly owns two world records, but says a world championship is his real goal. Allen is a competitor at heart. “My training day starts at 5am. I cross train with lifting and cardio and then I hit the range for 2-3 hours. Basically, I eat, sleep, train, track for 12-14 hours a day. Last season I spent understanding my golf swing….what does it take for the ball to do what I want it to do. I hold the world’s fastest recorded swing

speed at 164mph but if someone would have told me a few years ago that I would hold a world record or would be working on another, I wouldn’t have believed them. It’s like telling a person who doesn’t work out they are going to the Olympics in 2 years!” Allen was gracious enough to take time out of his training and competition to answer a few questions. You can also view more of him at Maurice Allen Video.

What would you say is your biggest strength beside the sport you play? My belief in God is my biggest strength. Through him everything else falls in place. I believe everything that has 54

happened with me and golf is a product of God--I never would have imaged things to play out the way they have the past two years. I have a wonderful supportive family and an amazing group of friends as well as fans who are there no matter what happens, which it truly a blessing. I have an amazing gift that I was blessed with which allows me to talk to a lot of people, mainly kids, and show them that anything is possible. To me that’s what it’s really all about, the opportunity to change a kid’s life and help them better their situation and mindset.

What makes your equipment different than the average golfer? The only thing that makes my equipment different would be the flex on the shaft and the loft of the driver head. The average golfer uses a stiff to an X flex shaft. For a 45” driver my shaft would measure out at about a 4-5 X flex. When it comes to loft, most are playing between an 8 to a 10 degree loft. My drivers range from 1 degree to 6 degrees of loft. Lastly, the difference on the face would be the lack of score lines on the face of my clubs to reduce spin. On most drivers, the score lines are there to add spin and also make the club more forgiving. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

What do you consider your greatest moment in golf?

What is the biggest misconception that people have about long drive competitors? Most people think that the clubs we use are illegal. Every long drive club MUST conform to USGA regulations. All the club heads must pass the CT test and the clubs cannot be longer than 48”. The second thing would be just because the guys are big they SHOULD hit the ball far. Not every muscular and tall person can hit the ball far. I’m short compared to most long drivers who are 6’3-6’6” and 235-300 lbs. Hitting the ball far is truly a gift. All of the guys who compete in long drive are exceptional athletes.

My greatest golf moment is seeing the smile on my parents face with the things that I have accomplished in this short amount of time. My mom was there when I broke the record so that was awesome. The major part is seeing my dad smile because he is the one who put the club in my hand although I never pursued the sport. I felt like I broke his heart by not playing golf, but to see it come full circle means the world to me.

Are you passionate about any sport other than golf? I am passionate about track and field since that was my first love of sport. There is something about pushing your body to the limit and beyond. Track is one of the only sports that you do this to yourself. You control your feet moving, you are the one that runs until you can feel you heart beating in your throat. You do it all to yourself to improve your time. Running

gives you a freedom that is probably close to flying. But for the most part, I’m passionate about everything that I do because I put my all into everything.

Is there a mantra that you live by or words of wisdom that motivate you? Here are my top 5 in no particular order. “Stay far from timid, make moves only when your hearts in and live the phrase, ‘sky’s the limit.’” Notorious BIG

“If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.” MLK “You can’t tell everyone your dreams because one day someone will try to wake you up.” Pastor David Eggleston “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.” Eric Thomas, hip hop preacher “Ambition is priceless—it’s something that’s in your veins and I put that on my name. They’re gonna love me for my ambition. It’s easy to dream a dream, though it’s harder to live it.” Wale

what'sheader new

It’s Like Netflix for Golf Balls Do you ever wonder It’s Like Netflix for Golf Balls Do you ever wonder why you didn’t think of that before? Remember the first time you saw ketchup in a squeeze bottle? Didn’t you think, ‘brilliant idea— wish I had done it’. Well, here’s another one for the books. The company, Play My Ball, backed by former executives of Microsoft, Fox News, Citi Bank, ShoeDazzle and others, recently launched their newest product called, ‘MYBALL’. When asked how CEO and creator, Derek Broes, came up with the name, his answer, like his product, is innovative. “I was thinking in my head and out loud, ‘what should I call it’? I never say, ‘where is my Titleist’!” And with that, the unintended puns started. Both Broes and his executive team thought it was either going to be a huge success or a train wreck. After receiving great reviews in its short time on the market, it is safe to say they have a successful product. All joking aside, this isn’t just another golf ball on the market. As their tag line

56

says, ‘Get Your Mind Out Of The Bunker And Back Into The Game’. Why do 9 of 10 golfers tested prefer MYBALL? The number one comment was “MYBALL flies straighter and goes longer”. They are Pro-Performance balls creating less side spin, travelling straighter and longer—this enables the golfer to find themselves on the fairway more often. The new Tour Ball, for lower handicap golfers is due out in the next few months. Over the last decade, golf ball companies lagged behind the technological advances in materials used for making golf balls. As a result, very few ball companies, if any, use materials they make or own. Being the huge companies they are, DuPont and 3M have taken over the industry from a materials stand point. This allowed MYBALL to use the same materials and construction as the largest brand names in the industry including Titleist, Nike and other top brands. MYBALL is manufactured with materials from DuPont USA and manufactured at the same location as many of the (so called) “best balls in golf” are made. Thermoplastic materials allow MYBALL to push the limits of the USGA envelope, maximizing the speed limit without going over. These materials are used on some of

the best balls on the market and played by many Tour Players including Stephen Ames, Stewart Cink, Richard Finch, Lucas Glover, Matt Haines, Anthony Kim, Kevin Kisner, Justin Leonard, Jamie Lovemark, Pablo Martin, Francesco Molinari, James Morrison, and Carl Pettersson. What else makes MYBALL different? Short of having a better name and bringing more fun to your game, they offer an innovative and less expensive alternative to buying. The team at MYBALL truly believes that if they can save you money, make it more convenient to get a sleeve of balls and provide you with a quality product, you can play more golf. It’s as simple as that. The product can only be purchased and delivered via a monthly subscription service. 1 sleeve (3 balls) for $6.99 per month, 2 sleeves (6 balls) $11.99 per month, 12 balls (1 dozen) per month for $24.99 or 2 dozen balls for $39.99 per month. That’s less money than 1 dozen ProV 1’s! And, you won’t pay a shipping cost either. With this unique subscription service, the golfer never has to worry about forgetting to buy balls at the store and paying a premium at the course as a result. Greens fees are not cheap and losing a $5 ball could actually hurt your game. Just think if you could save $20 per a dozen balls and still get the same quality result. Now, you can not only play more golf because of the savings, you can shoot straighter and longer with a tested performance ball. With MYBALL, you can stop worrying about buying and losing balls again. MYBALL will not let you down. It will be there every month, it will not bother you nearly as much when you lose it and you will always be able to say to that other golfer that the ball he is about to play–“Hey, that’s my ball!”–and mean it. For more information, to see some great video clips and to start your subscription, please visit www.myball.com. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 5

Javier Catena’s, President of Bodega Cuarto Dominio, great grandfather, Nicola, was born in the little town of Tolentino in Italy at the end of the 1800’s. He was a vineyard worker there until he sailed from Italy to Argentina in 1898. When he arrived to Mendoza, he was taken aback by the splendor of the Andes, by its landscapes and by the people that received him so warmly. He was convinced he wanted to follow his dream here and planted his first Malbec vineyard in 1902. Up until that point, Malbec was a blending grape in Bordeaux, but Nicola supposed it would find its perfect place in Mendoza. Javier Catena’s family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza for over four generations. Cuarto Dominio’s “Lote 44” wines come from a special lot selection in the high altitude vineyards of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, which sit 1,100 meters above sea level. The soil is sandy and rocky. The climate typically presents hot days and colder nights, with a considerable temperature variation.
