Good Tidings to All This is always my favorite time of year as it embodies all of my favorite things. It is a time of celebration and fellowship. We spend precious time with our families and friends. There are lots of parties toasting to all of the positive moments of a great year as well as the optimism of the year ahead. I was asked this month what inspires me? I’m going to ask you the readers the same thing. I get mine from my daughter, my wife, my parents and my colleagues. I also get it from this great State I live in. As always, we focus on individuals, families and businesses that are unique in what they do and how they choose to live their lives-our “Giving Back” you might say. Most of us at one time or another get caught up in that commercial holiday chaos. Don’t fret, however because in this issue we decided to ease the stress of holiday shopping by offering you some of our favorite gift ideas for everyone on your list. Also be sure to take some time out to visit all of our advertisers. Being a publisher I know all too well about words. During this holiday season, we encourage a spirit of inclusion that respects the ideas, opinions, and practices of others notwithstanding that it may be different than ours. A gentle reminder: Be mindful of the words you say to others. “Kind words heal and help; cutting words wound and maim.” Proverbs 15:4. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I do. Your approval matters. We try to make our features, profiles, and reviews as enjoyable for you to read as they are for us to create. Reaching over 80,000 digital views this past issue tells us you like what we’re doing. And for that we thank you--with a capital T! We’d like to thank our readers for being so loyal and following us all year long. We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Leadership by Choice There are many similarities between the game of golf and everyday leadership skills. Here are three helpful tips that can improve your leadership skills and your next golfing experience.

1. Self Talk. We all know that golf is

physical. What we say to ourselves as we golf can impact how well we do and how much fun we have.

Before you step out on the course either the day before or while driving to the course. Tell yourself what you would like to experience and picture it. Example – “It’s going to be a fun day of golf” “I’m going to really enjoy golfing today.” And repeat it several times with emotion. You can even write it down if you like. You’ll be amazed at the result. Some people call this visualizing, setting an intention, etc. You get out of life what you expect. So what do you expect the next time you golf?

2. Dealing with Failure. Just like in life as to in golf there will be some trying times. But how you view and respond to failure makes all the difference. When you see failure as a temporary state in your overall journey, you begin to see what you can learn and apply to reach your goal. Your level of enjoyment of a round of golf with friends and good weather should not be only subjected to how well you hit a small ball in a small hole.

3. Remembering the Purpose. Many folks are attracted to golf because of a charity event, special occasion, or perhaps the camaraderie of friends. If you are attending a charity event that’s not the time to scrutinize every shot you make. Remember it’s for the charity 8

Dead Men’s Clubs The golf world is turned upside down in Charlie Ryan’s new novel Dead Men’s Clubs, a story of Golf, Death, and Redemption that stretches from the Carolina Lowcountry to West Virginia’s esteemed Greenbrier Hotel. The book, written for general audiences as well as golfers, reaches bookshelves just in time to fill Christmas stockings. Ryan focuses on Munch Malone, a seriously inept golfer on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, who, at 70 years old, has a very high

handicap that draws some unlikely attention from the afterlife. From on high, two scratch golfers---both quite deceased---have been scouring Earth on a quest to find the right golfer. If they are ever to again play their beloved game, they need a serious hacker for a grand experiment from the Great Beyond. And then they find Munch. Mission accomplished, they settle back into their easy chairs in the great clubhouse in the sky, drinks in hand, to watch as their experiment plays itself out down on terra firma on high-definition television. Ryan’s book takes the reader through some hilarious moments as Munch Malone begins to buy reconditioned clubs that once belonged to the heavenly golf duo in the sky. With each club purchase he plays better golf, winning his club championship, and eventually, qualifying to play in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship at The Greenbrier Hotel. Munch and the media begin to realize Malone has some assistance in his amazing effort; his handicap lowers and his game goes scratch through “Contagion” --- the deceased golfers are swinging the clubs, scorching fairways at The Greenbrier’s Old White course. Munch is destined to win the Championship, but he is derailed as Vegas operatives plot to steal his clubs. The escapade romps from the golf course into The Greenbrier itself, racing through the hotel’s “Bunker” and into its grand Casino, where plots are hatched and emails fly. Munch struggles to overcome obstacles placed in his path as sexual twists punctuate the action and Glocks are drawn on the course. Thousands are glued to the action, cheering Munch on, as he charges into golf history, wielding Dead Men’s Clubs. The book is available in both soft cover and E-edition on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Abbot Press (http://abbottpress.com).

Itty Bitty 2013 The Junior Golf Association of Arizona with the sponsorship of The Thunderbirds and in conjunction with the parks and recreation departments of Phoenix, Glendale, Mesa, Peoria, Scottsdale, Tempe, Surprise, Chandler and Goodyear will stage the Itty Bitty Open on Jan. 19. Starting times are 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sue Shindler-Montello and the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department founded the Itty Bitty Open in 1988. Held at 15 different locations throughout the Valley of the Sun, the 25th Itty Bitty Open is free and open to youngsters ages 3, 4 and 5. Each participant will receive an Itty Bitty Open set of plastic golf clubs and balls in a plastic golf bag, along with an Itty Bitty Open visor at no charge. Basic golf instruction will be given by PGA and LPGA golf professionals. Then, along with their adult caddie (parent/relative), the participants will try out their new skills in a noncompetitive “tournament” on a speciallydesigned nine-hole course.

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?

I was born in Middlesex, NJ which is located about 40 miles from New York City. I lived there until the end of High School when I moved to Arizona State for my freshman year.

Brian Benitz

What do you do for a living (or when you aren’t playing golf)? I work as an Assistant Golf Professional at The

Raven Golf Club PHX located off Baseline Road. Working at a golf course is fun and the team that we have The Raven is second to none.

Do you have a favorite designer for suits, shoes, etc?

When it comes to golf apparel you can’t go wrong with Travis Matthews or Sligo. When it comes to shoes you have to wear Ecco on the course. Sunglasses have to be Persol.

Aside from golf, what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?

For fun and relaxation, I enjoy running half marathons and playing disc golf. Working for OB Sports has its perks, so I play a lot of golf as well.

Who would you like to have with you on a deserted island? If I was on a deserted island, I would want a 60 degree wedge to practice my bunker shots in the endless sand, a barrel of rum or tequila to keep me busy for a while and I would definitely need some Bullfrog sunscreen.

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy foursome? My dream foursome of golf would be Jim Morrison from The Doors, Hunter S. Thompson, and Pamela Anderson in 1994.

What is the last book you read?

The last book I read was “Seal Team Six” which describes the firsthand story of the capture of Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan. It’s a great story told by the people who were there.

Who is your favorite comedian?

My favorite comedians are Larry David and Daniel Tosh. They have two very different styles that are always funny and relevant to the times. Louis C.K is also funny.

What is your favorite course to play?

My favorite courses to play are Cascata in Las Vegas and The Rim Club in AZ. All of the OB Sports courses are always in excellent condition and fun to play any time of year.

What was your best golf shot ever?

My best golf shot ever is the putt that I made to win a charity golf tournament that raised money for a no-kill animal shelter. Everybody was a winner that day. 12

Where did you grow up?

cart girl

I grew up in Mesa, Arizona where I attended high school and later relocated to “the most livable city”, Scottsdale, Arizona.

If you could be any animal, what would it be and why? I would want to be an elephant because of their majestic beauty, loyalty and wisdom.

What is your favorite sport to play and to watch?

I love a good game of volleyball with friends. I’m 5’10, so spiking comes naturally. I also LOVE football season!

Do you enjoy playing golf and are there any golfers in your family? I really enjoy being on the course and bettering my game each time. My dad is a great teacher because of his patience regardless of the quality of my shots

What do you feel makes this club special?

Quintero has always stood out as the best in the valley to me. The service and overall experience that begins with the ownership, management and staff is truly what makes Quintero one of the elite courses in Arizona. Last but definitely not least, the breathtaking views!

What is your favorite part and least favorite part of being a cart girl? Besides being outside all day, my favorite part of being a cart girl is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world on a daily basis. If I have to pick my least favorite part, I’d have to say the extremely hot summers.

If you weren’t a cart girl what would you be doing?

I’m a huge animal lover so my dream job would be to own and run a pet resort/rescue. My dog lives for doggy massages!

What is your most memorable moment working as a cart girl? Being asked to be cart girl of the month! What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on the golf course? Watching grown men throw clubs while playing a gentlemen’s game always makes me giggle!

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I’m very outgoing so anything involving being around people is always a good time for me. Going to concerts and dancing with friends will make me a happy girl every time

Do you have a favorite comedian?

Katt Williams, hands down! The hilarious Amy Schumer is right up there in close second.

a d n a r i M hurston T

What is your idea of a perfect date?

The way to my heart is through dinner and good conversation followed by a great country concert. Make me laugh and you’ll score major points!

What is your favorite charity to support?

I have a soft spot for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the ASPCA. They’re both amazing charities to support.

What else would you like us to know about you? 14

I’m a “glass is half full” kind of girl. I live life to the fullest and enjoy all the surprises that come along with it.

Time To Go Back To School In the early 1900’s, Bisbee, Arizona was considered the true “wild, wild west”. There were saloons all along the downtown streets, gunfights, gambling and just general hell-raising. The surrounding land was host to Geronimo, Cochise, Pancho Villa and Lee Marvin (he came later). In 1910, the city was considered the largest in the territory, with over 25,000 people. The Cochise County seat was relocated here from Tombstone in 1929. People came and found jobs, becoming miners and railroad workers and their children were enrolled in school. In June of 1917, the John R. Kibbey Architects working out of Phoenix completed the plans and drawings for an elementary school, which was built and opened in 1918 as Garfield School. There were now 15 schools strategically placed at ½ mile intervals throughout Bisbee so that children would not have a long walk to get an education. The school was converted to apartments in the late thirties and in 1989 it

16

became a bed and breakfast. Located one mile west of downtown Old Bisbee in the quiet residential area, the former Garfield School is now called the School House Inn and is surrounded by lush green hills and quaint colorful homes. Even now the same sturdy red brick construction stands tall and regal, with 8,110 sq. ft. of floor space. In the bottom floor of this two-story icon still remains the original steam heat furnace. Iit has long since been disabled, but due to its sheer weight and size, cannot be removed. At the east end of the Inn stands a dynamic, giant oak tree. In the early 1900’s, it was just a back yard variety live oak, but has since grown to mammoth proportions, towering higher than the rooftop and spreading it’s branches to shade the large patio. The original blueprints for the school are displayed in the stairway which leads to the nine very spacious rooms. In keeping with its educational days, ev-

ery room has a school theme. Everyone loves the Principal’s Office Suite, the Art Room, the Geography Room and many others. Who would have thought that school could be this much fun? You can even sleep in class! The School House Inn is a four star bed and breakfast with multiple “Fodor’s Choice” awards, the first presentation in 2006, then again consecutively through 2012. They acknowledge the School House Inn as “one of the world’s top establishments selected by the most discerning travel experts.” If you want to take a trip down memory lane, be sure to book your room early and bring your appetite. Your current hosts, John and Paula are waiting for you. For more information, please visit www.schoolhouseinnbb.com. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 6

Puerto Rico More Than A Cruise Port Of Call

Royal Isabella Hole 1 Photo by Joann Dost

Winter is upon us. The air is colder. We are thinking of places to travel. We just found out parts of Texas want to secede from the Union and Puerto Rico wants in. It seems the better option is to go to a place that wants us around. Imagine a week of swimming in subterranean rivers, rappelling down limestone ravines, zip-lining over a verdant canopy, scuba diving the deepest depths of the Atlantic Ocean, and kayaking into a glow-in-the dark bioluminescent bay. Add to that, over 270 miles of beaches, history that is older than the US and some really good golfing! That sounds like the perfect place to cure the winter blues. Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico), is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of both the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Only 100 miles long by 35 Royal Isabella Aerial Photo by Joann Dost

18

miles wide, this is the smallest island of the Greater Antilles. Puerto Rico (Spanish for “rich port”) consists of an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and several islands: Vieques, Culebra, Mona and numerous islets. The history of Puerto Rico predates the landing of the Mayflower on Plymouth Rock by over 100 years. When the Spanish settled the island in the early 1500s, they realized that Puerto Rico’s value lay not in gold or silver, but in its strategic location and deep natural harbor. When you explore this island, you step back in time to an era when the Old World reshaped the New. And speaking of new, there are some fabulous newer courses that are worth the trip alone. The first Puerto Rico Open was established in 2008 and Trump International Golf Club was the host. With an overwhelming response and more than 75,000 visitors on that inaugural event, it’s no wonder why they have yearly been named the “Best Golf Course in Puerto Rico” and are listed as one of the top 20 Best Tour Courses You Can Play. Located in the quaint town of Rio Grande, approximately 30 minutes from San Juan at the foothills of the

world famous El Yunque Rainforest, Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico is spread over one thousand lush acres on the Atlantic coast. The Club boasts Puerto Rico’s first course of legendary proportions, designed by PGA Tour Professional Tom Kite. Comprised of two 18-hole championship courses, the Championship and the International, the meticulously crafted fairways feature stellar scenery. Each course winds through lush tree groves and over waterways and lakes, amid tropical blooms and past scenic bluffs, delivering an unparalleled golfing experience to players of all levels. The two 18-hole courses offer four distinct experiences on an impressive landscape; the Championship Course begins among spectacular man-made lakes and follows to the ocean with incredible water views while the International Course runs through beautiful hills and then sits on green mangroves for a challenging yet beautiful golf setting. As Mr. Trump once said, “It’s not how you play the game but where.” Challenging to all levels and featuring exquisite views of the water at every turn, this club is a spectacular place to play and enjoy the incomparable touch of the Trump Name. For more information, please visit www.trumpgolfclubpuertorico.com. While Mr. Trump prides himself on his accomplishments, it wouldn’t be fair if you didn’t take a swing at some of the other fabulous courses on the island. Afterall, Puerto Rico is where golf was meant to be played. At least this is according to the Golf Links at Royal Isabela, which curls itself along rugged cliffs, providing memorable challenges and marvelous views of the coastline meeting with the sea. Located on a spectacular oceanfront tract in northwestern Puerto Rico, Royal Isabela is a private golf club, residential community and small inn designed with respect for the land and the game’s honorable traditions. Brothers Stanley and Charlie Pasarell envisioned and designed the course with great passion for the land and the game. Through collaboration with architect David W. Pfaff, they brought their vision to breathtaking reality. Created on site, not on paper, the design evolved from the land itself. Their hands-on and minimal-impact approach pays tribute to the Golf Links’ majestic partner: nature. The landscape’s native grasses, natural sand dunes and deep canyons are integral to the layout, while sodfaced bunkers add a Scottish flair to this island gem. These elements, along with trade winds that are your friend one moment and your foe the next, shape the course’s character and captivate the golf purist. Each hole provides a unique test. In fact, Royal Isabela is not limited to one signature moment. Mother Nature has provided them continuously from start to finish. A legacy has been created here, one of appreciation for the environment and of respect for its history. For more information, please visit www.royalisabela.com. Another course that should be on your play list is the Bahia Beach Resort Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 6

and Golf Club. According to Robert Trent Jones, Jr, the architect of this course, “Bahia Beach will be a haven of golf that will challenge but also delight your soul and spirit”. The course was created around a network of saltwater lagoons, which Jones took full advantage of in his design. Fifteen of the 18 holes are enframed by water. The course takes route around the lagoons before emerging onto the Atlantic coast for the final three holes. Experience golf on a challenging championship course designed with a commitment to preserve the natural integrity of the area. The facility is managed by Troon Golf and offers the highest standards of course conditioning and service. For more information, please visit www.bahiabeachpuertorico.com.

Quintessential Quintero I often get asked by out of town friends and associates who are visiting Arizona that if I could recommend one golf course for them to play that truly epitomizes Sonoran Desert golf, which course would that be? While there are some fantastic desert layouts scattered all over the valley, I now suggest that they head to the northwest side of town and play Quintero Golf Club. The true southwest desert experience of playing Quintero starts when you exit the freeway. The drive from the freeway to the golf course takes you through some rugged desert terrain and gets you ready for the wild west golf experience you are about to tackle when playing Quintero. As you pull into the property, you get small glimpses of the emerald green fairways that weave through mountain covered property. Golf course designer Rees Jones did a wonderful job of using the natural landscape to route the course. Opened in 2002, the course is called the Founders Course. It was to be part of a very high end private

development that was slated to also have Greg Norman designed course. With the downturn of the housing market and the economy, the original plans have not worked out. That is one of benefits of the down economy. It allows everyone the opportunity to play fantastic layouts like Quintero that were meant to be private. If you like golf courses that offer up dramatic elevation changes, you need to put Quintero at the top of your must 20

How To Set Your Financial Priorities • Size up your retirement needs to project your annual retirement income and expenses. • Be more conservative and avoid making high-risk investments. • Weigh your financial needs against those of your children. Don’t let your children’s college costs interrupt your retirement savings plan.

Refining years (50-60) Your peak earnings combined with reduced financial responsibility for your children can make this stage financially rewarding. Accumulating assets for retirement is more important than ever.

• Consider a shift toward more conservative growth

During our lives, we move through the financial lifecycle. We begin by saving for a house, then focusing on our children’s college education, and later, we’re looking toward retirement. To help set your financial priorities, consider the following life stages.

Early years (25-40) At this stage, it’s best to focus on growth-oriented products since many of your goals are several years away. To create a balance, life insurance can offer safety and stability in addition to death protection.

• Work on your savings through good financial habits. • Consider taking risks with your investments for the chance to outpace inflation. • Have adequate life and long-term disability income insurance, and be sure your policies cover your needs. • Beware of credit card debt, car loans, lease payments, and mortgage debt. • Set up an estate plan shortly after marriage and update it when you have children. It’s important to have a will, a living will and a durable power of attorney.

opportunities including inflation protection. • Take a look at your estate plan. Your estate may have grown to the point that you can benefit from advanced estate planning techniques, such as marital status and life insurance trusts. • Determine your desired retirement lifestyle and plan accordingly.

Rewarding years (60 and over) To maintain your lifestyle during retirement, you’ll likely need extra income to supplement Social Security benefits and pension payments. The majority of your savings and investment program should focus on producing income and protecting your investments against inflation.

It’s never too late to begin prioritizing The first step to help determine your future financial needs is to participate in a needs analysis session.

Building years (40-50) A rising income is helping you achieve your goals during this stage in your life. However, expenses such as your children’s college education may reduce your current spendable income. The need for growth is still essential since retirement is nearing, yet impending goals may warrant a shift toward more conservative products.

He became an assistant golf pro at a club in Minnesota and during this time, he married his wife, Melissa. His burning desire to play on the PGA tour never left him and in 1988, he decided to play competitively again with the support of Melissa. Lehman played his way back into the PGA and in 1991, he was named the Hogan Tour Player of the Year, and automatically received his PGA card again at 32. He has enjoyed unbroken PGA membership since then. He won the British Open in 1996 and finished the year number one in earnings. That year, he was named PGA player of the year. In April 1997, he was ranked the number one golfer in the world. But the thing about Tom Lehman is that he’s so much more than a great golfer. He’s a family man whose faith takes priority. what's new Have you ever thought it would be nice to get real-time analysis of your golf swing without the hassle of having to video yourself? How about just wishing you could improve your game or figure out why you keep slicing it even though everything feels right? The SwingTIP Bluetooth Golf Swing Analyzer is the perfect solution for anyone looking to improve their golf swing and game. SwingTIP helps golfers achieve greater impact at the moment of truth – when the club face hits the ball. SwingTIP uses a Bluetooth-enabled 3D motion sensor that securely clips onto your club to precisely analyze and capture a golf swing in three dimensions. The lightweight device won't interfere with your natural swing as it weighs an unnoticeable 29 grams (0.063 lbs) and doesn't require a special club to work. When paired to your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Android device, you'll receive instant analysis of your golf swing. This allows for tweaks on the fly whether you're mid-round or simply swinging away at the driving range. SwingTIP bridges the gap between learning golf technically and playing the game of golf by “feel”. It creates the ultimate interactive learning experience by telling a golfer what happened, why it happened and how to improve. While it is great for use to analyze your own swing, it can also greatly enhance your learning curve and experience when used along with a coach After every swing, the mobile app displays a video-like presentation of a golf swing from three angles (top, target, front) along with key performance met26

rics - swing path, clubface angle, impact zone, speed and tempo. You can see your “unique swing signature” and identify “the origins or why” – the elements that negatively impacted ball. Visual learning and instant feedback are the the key to real knowledge and improvement. The entire point of the game is manipulation of flight paths. Learning how to shape your golf shots (hit a draw or fade when you want to) is crucial if you want to take your golf game to the next level. Using SwingTIP as part of a well practiced and disciplined shot routine is a great way to take you into the zone and speed improvement. Following the Ben Hogan method, the best approach is when you practice with purpose - practice one “go to shot,” analyze your swing after every shot and then fine tune the next swing until it is perfect. With SwingTIP, you learn what a great shot looks like, and feels like, and you learn how to repeat it. To help golfers master the fundamentals, the SwingTIP mobile app provides instructional tips, videos and reference swings from PGA Pro Ray Leach. Learn how to reshape your swing path, square your club head or get more power in your swing. The app comes loaded with tips on every aspect of the mechanics of the golf swing. To track your progress, the SwingTIP app syncs your swing data to a personal MySwingTIP.com account using a wi-fi or cellular connection. Review performance reports to identify trends and see yourself improve over time. Connnect with friends, family or your coach and share your results for advice. Kitchen 56 Kitchen 56 is a neighborhood gathering spot in the heart of Arcadia, offering everyday American fare from Neapolitan-style pizzas, homemade pasta, wood-fired meat dishes, an affordable wine list and signature cocktails served in a modern, yet relaxed atmosphere. Their signature bar wraps around outside to the intimate patio that offers stunning views of Camelback Mountain, plenty of lounge seating and dining tables, along with a fire pit and ping-pong table, making it the perfect place to gather with friends and family. The restaurant is housed in a refurbished service station, a community landmark since the 1960s, and many of the design elements of the original structure still remain throughout the restaurant. Owned by people who live in Arcadia, Kitchen 56 strives to provide a community gathering spot for one of the greatest neighborhoods in Phoenix! The structure that is now Kitchen 56 was constructed in 1961 as a Humble/ Enco full-service gas station and automotive repair shop. In 1988, the gas station closed, and the building operated as just an automotive repair shop. By 2006, the shop was vacated and boarded up, and it soon became known by neighbors as the “purple building.” During the renovation process for Kitchen 56 in 2010, most of the original building was incorporated into the new design. Fusing old and new, the service station’s bays remain as the front façade and main dining room. The easternmost section of the building, the kitchen area, and the outdoor patio were added on to the original concrete block structure, blending seamlessly into the historic building. Kitchen 56 was built with many recycled materials from the original structure, including the re-use of wood and steel beams and re-fabricated metal components from the garage. Additional refurbished elements include reclaimed barn wood from a demolished barn in Northern Arizona, antique brick pavers, and an old Humble sign. So the next time you are in the Arcadia neighborhood, stop in to an old, comfortable place that has been revitalized with great atmosphere and food. Smart Body Golf When golfers ask

me which training aids will best help their game, I have a short list. Not all training aids are created equal and I only endorse products which help bring about real results. The main thing I look for when it comes to training aids is something that enhances the player’s ability to experience progress and discovery through self-coaching. My “Make The Turn” training system is a high-performance, lifestyle based program which provides dedicated golfers with the tools to unlock their true potential both on and off the course. In searching for a collection of great products which support learning the movements associated with a worldclass golf swing I found Smart Body Golf. Their unique products extend beyond the short-term solutions for golfers helping develop a solid foundation for success in both golf performance and overall wellness. The products provide instant feedback to optimize ball-striking skill and condition your body to help you reach your full playing potential. Many golfers are baffled by their lack of development despite hours of practice. Sure, there may be minor improvements, but they generally don’t reap the rewards often associated with solid effort. Swinging a golf club isn’t an intuitive act for the human body, which is why there’s an ever-increasing market for training aids. A successful and consistent golf swing occurs only when a series of proper kinetic movements perform in a perfect sequential fashion; if any point the sequence is off by even the smallest amount, the swing will prove to be ineffective. If you want to develop a higher caliber golf game, having a little help doesn’t hurt. An effective training aid can help you work on a specific swing fault and groove the correct move to cure it. With that being said, it’s highly beneficial to find products which support development in multiple areas through a variety uses. In coaching I always say “Practice doesn’t make perfect, but rather practice makes permanent!” Only in perfect practice can a golfer experience real results. That’s why I’m a strong supporter of Smart Body Golf and their initiative to help you play a better game! 30

Balance Your Swing If there’s one commonality in elite performance in any athletic endeavor it’s proper balance and footwork. Smart Body Golf Leverage Discs promote increased lower body stability and help golfers leverage out power from its most fundamental source in the golf swing.

Synchronize Your Swing This simple, innovative trainer actually makes you sync your arms, shoulders, hips and legs so you can effortlessly transform your swing into its most efficient and effective form. The Inside 80 vest helps maintain compact synchronization motion while promoting the use of the larger muscles for better distance control, especially for those allimportant shots. At the same time the unique cross-handle system will increase flexibility. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 6

Core muscles are essential to any athletic movement. Many golfers don’t know how Pros hit the ball 300 plus yards so effortlessly. They may not be as strong as NFL athletes but they utilize and strengthen the specific muscles that are essential to a powerful golf swing. The Swing Ball Pro targets the core muscles for maximum rotational strength. The versatility of handles gives that specialized functionality of a golfspecific training aid.

Power For Your Swing

Put Some Smarts In Your Swing The most common amateur mistake is “coming over the top”. The Smart Club Is designed to be a dynamic, interactive tool that allows the user to feel and achieve the proper sequencing and motion of an athletic golf swing, supported from the ground up. This is a simple, versatile, effective and wellArizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 6

designed training aid with multiple benefits for golfers at all levels. It can be used as a swing trainer, core fitness and flexibility tool, as well as a warm-up before you practice or play. The Smart Golf Club, with a specially designed weight distribution and flexible shaft, allows golfers to properly

feel lag in the downswing for optimum momentum, which means more club head speed through the golf ball. I recommend any or all of these training aids to help improve and prolong your golf game. For more information, please visit www.smartbodygolf.com. 31

Become A Member Rio Verde is one of Arizona’s premier active adult golf communities. Nestled in the heart of the high Sonoran Desert just a few miles outside the city of Scottsdale, Rio Verde features two traditional, parkland-style championship golf courses which were recently redesigned by the Tom Lehman Design Group. It also features a spacious clubhouse, three dining areas and a wealth of social and recreational amenities designed for active adults, living up to its motto “Golf… and a whole lot more”. The 735acre low density community features custom homes and charming villas overlooking manicured fairways and majestic mountains. Rio Verde features two traditional style courses with a soft desert look, more Midwestern in style with a lot more grass than one would imagine in a desert setting. When Tom Lehman led the $6 million course renovation project a few years ago, he achieved his vision of creating two uniquely distinct courses, giving members a never-ending variety of golf experiences. Quail Run has all the elements of a traditional golf course, while White Wing plays more like a links course. Common to both courses are meticulously groomed fairways, greens loaded with personality and outstanding mountain views. According to Lehman, “We’ve created golf for all levels of players to enjoy.” Rio Verde Country Club recently announced its membership programs for 2012-2013, which includes a total of six different membership opportunities to fit the needs of both residents and nonresidents.

32

Due to the popularity of the program, Rio Verde will continue to offer its Ambassador Preview Membership initiatives for both residents and nonresidents. Participants in these programs commit to paying dues for 12 months and have the option of purchasing a full membership at any time during the year. The initiation fee is will be discounted if purchased by Feb. 28, 2013. The first of the new programs being offered is the Rio Preview Membership, which is designed to suit winter visitors who aren’t yet ready to make a long-term commitment and only spend a limited amount of time in Arizona each year. It is available as a four or six-month program and can only be used once prior to full-time membership conversion. The six-month Preview Membership is a two-year program, with members having the option to use either two months in the first year and four in the second (or vice versa); while the four-month Preview Membership allows members to use all four months in one year or split it up and use two months for each season. Preview Members may convert to full membership at any time and will receive a reduced initiation fee if they convert before their Preview Membership term expires. The Preliminary Membership classification

is also new this year, and is available for people under the age of 60. This new membership class is good for an individual or couple, and provides golf privileges for up to four weeks per year, to be designated in at least one-week increments. Preliminary Members may upgrade to regular membership at no additional cost. All Rio Verde Country Club members enjoy full privileges of the Club, including use of Rio Verde’s two 18hole golf courses, its comprehensive practice range facility, plus all of the clubhouse facilities which feature a wide array of dining and social opportunities. In addition to great golf, the community offers a variety of other activities throughout the year including swimming, hiking, tennis, biking and horseback riding. All categories of membership and applications are subject to approval of the Rio Verde Board of Directors. For more information on membership opportunities, visit the new Rio Verde Country Club website at www.rioverdecc. com or contact Jo Lewis at (877) 746-8373 or jlewis@rioverdecc.com. Time’s Up OK..we have all heard and said

it. “Where did the year go?” And yet, here we sit wondering how it happened again. Even worse, we might be nostalgic or regretful for not doing what we said we would do last year at this time—drop 10 pounds, save more money and improve that swing. All is not lost. It’s time to make some things happen. But before you can do this, you will have to let go of the idea that choosing a certain day of the year (or week) to start making a change is a good idea. That’s right, it’s kinda silly. Afterall, I am a grown woman who has been making resolutions at the beginning of each year since I can remember. What I can’t remember is how many of them were actually achieved. That’s not because I am old— it’s because so few of them got accomplished. How do I know that? Well, I still want to drop 10 pounds, save more money and improve that swing. If I had actually accomplished this, I would like to think I had the wherewithal to pick a few more things to tackle.

Are You In Your Right Mind?

Think about it….if everyone who made a resolution to lose 10 pounds starting on January 1 (or Monday!) actually followed through, we would be a thinner society and wouldn’t have to worry so much about Obamacare! The thing about making resolutions is that you are either ready or you aren’t. It doesn’t matter if it is January 1 or June17. So, before you start mouthing off about what you are going to accomplish, make sure you want to.

All Or Nothing

Does your resolution go something like this—‘this year I am going to shave my handicap down 34

By Golf Chick

(which I hope is the case for all of us), you’re better off making resolutions sequentially through the year, rather than all at once. Once you have succeeded in one, you are ready to move on to the next. That’s not to say we can’t do two things at once. It’s to remind you that if you load yourself down with multiple, concurrent tasks, your multitasking skills will wane over time and you won’t succeed.

Find The Momentum

to single digits’. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always good to aim high. But you also need to be realistic or you will just defeat yourself. Unless you have won the lottery and are now able to play golf for 8 hours a day, it is doubtful you can achieve such a lofty goal. Maybe something a little more realistic like—‘I am going to play an extra round of golf each week/month and will sign up for a lesson or two to help my putting’. This sounds like something that can be done. And the best part of it is that you are almost guaranteed to improve your game by doing so.

One Thing At A Time

Research suggests that the more resolutions you make, the less likely you are to accomplish any of them. If you really want to accomplish multiple things this year

I believe we are all sincere when we say we want to do things. I am completely into it when I say I want to retire early. The problem is that I seem to lose some steam as soon as that first Spring Golf Apparel sale makes its way to my inbox. This is the hard part. This is where we normally give up—or at least cheat and then tell ourselves we will get back on track tomorrow—which, by the way, never happens. FIND SOMETHING that keeps you motivated. Look at how much you have saved so far, how much better you feel after 3 pounds gone or even, how much better your swing works after just tweaking it just so. And keep that SOMETHING visible to you during these weak times. It’s your catalyst for motivation and stamina. Don’t throw it all away—just this once, follow through and see what happens. Here’s my challenge then--for you and me. The odds are stacked against us--out of the 45% who make a resolution, only 8% achieve. Instead of limiting ourselves to make a change once a year (or every Monday!) and feeling unfulfilled on all those fulfilling wishes, develop a positive attitude and a positive thinking mindset. Be thankful for each day as an opportunity to draw closer to a goal and practice getting closer to it each day. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 6

improving your handicap

No Limits “The only handicaps we have are the limits of our imagination,” says Stephen Fangio. This modern day gladiator has overcome tragedy in his life to become PGA certified. He grew up in Plano, Texas with a promising career in soccer that ended with a motorcycle accident in 1980. The loss of his leg, and career, changed his life forever. “Time causes us to lose track of the things that are important, and we start to take them for granted,” Fangio says. Since the accident, he’s learned, “we find out many things through our misfortunes. They build character and strength. Mistakes will happen, so will accidents. I’ve lost my

40

leg. But, I know because of my strong will, desire and work ethics, any goal is attainable. No one will work harder than I.” In 1985 Fangio started playing golf. In 1997, with a Cleveland sponsorship, he started playing Monday qualifiers on the Buy.com and PGA Tours. He enjoys the hard work. Seeing himself improve, he looks forward to every game. “Playing on the PGA Tour is a dream I will accomplish,” says Fangio. While the PGA Tour has been his ultimate goal, inspirational speaking and clinics are others. “If my life and experience can help others, then my loss was well worth it. Our children are our future. Just like golf, our young need a good foundation.” In the past, and for years to come, Fangio plans to work with the youth groups in his local schools, churches and other organizations. “I hope and I pray that my life can be an inspiration to them.” Further, his goal to play professionally on the Champions Tour, along with his Mechanical Engineering background, has led to the design and development of one of the finest putters on the market today. Quality and performance in golf equipment is his number one goal. Using aluminum gives the putters a soft feel and comfort level

second to none. If you’re having trouble on the green, the fix is just a click away! The putters are manufactured with precision and quality in mind. Each putter is CNC machined from 6061 T6 aluminum, and 300 series stainless. Forty gram heel and toe weighted, shafted directly into the putter head for better feel. The putter complies with USGA rules and regulations. And, if that’s not enough, Fangio also shares instruction. ‘It’s Just Golf’ is the first in a series of instructional DVD’s that were created for all the frustrated and confused golfers out there. This DVD includes techniques that have been developed to not only improve your golf game, but to make it enjoyable again. By applying these techniques, you will swing freely with less effort and hit the ball longer with more accuracy. In just a few hours of practice you can take these techniques to the course, putting enjoyment and consistency back in your golf game. For more information on Stephen Fangio’s inspirational life, his passion, his creations and his instruction, please visit www.fangiogolf.com.

Stretch for a Better Turn Most of my students yearn for more distance, especially off the tee. However, if you do not have an upper-body coil you may be just swinging the club with your arms, which is not powerful. Often golfers who swing with only their arms, say

Correct Backswing

all of their clubs go the same distance. This is because there is no power generated from just an arm swing. Ideally, you want to turn your torso and get your front shoulder behind the ball at the top of the swing to create a wide arc.

Incorrect Backswing

If your torso is weak and inflexible, then you will end up just taking the club back with your arms. Here is stretch to help you loosen up your torso. Torso Stretch on Exercise Ball 1. Sit on an exercise ball, trying to keep your lower body stable and your vision forward. 2. Twist your upper body over the resistance of your lower body. Place one hand on the opposite knee and the other on the ball behind you. Hold stretch for 10 to 15 seconds. 3. Repeat stretch on the opposite side. Repeat stretch two to three times.

The RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup is an innovative tournament created to honor the 13 women who founded the LPGA over 60 years ago. During the 2012 LPGA Founders Cup tournament, RR Donnelley introduced Scoring for Schools, a season-long charitable program that will provide $300,000 in donations to the schools and programs of players’ choices through DonorsChoose. org. Throughout the season players will be awarded 5 points for every birdie and 25 for each eagle. At the end of the season the top 10 players based on accumulated points will direct donations totaling $300,000 to the schools and programs of their choice through DonorsChoose.org. Yani Tseng and Stacy Lewis had a demanding lead the first six events, followed by Suzann Pettersen and Jiyai Shin. The RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup also supports several local charities through their Tickets For Charity Program, which gives organizations an opportunity to receive 50% of proceeds on tickets they sell. To date they have donated more than $15,000 to organizations participating in their Tickets For Charity Program. The LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Program is the primary beneficiary of the RR Don-

As more tournaments lose their sponsors and fade into memory, it’s important to note that much more is being lost than golf tournaments. The LPGA does not limit itself to being a sports entity. Through its charitable work and public service in the towns, cities, states and countries they hold events, they have become an annual member of communities across the country and around the globe. It is said that sometimes you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. LPGA fans and staff know, and more people are discovering, what the LPGA has in its membership; a group of players not only dedicated to excellence in their field, but also committed to serving and improving the lives of people in the communities they play. Over the past three years, the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup has raised more than $1million dollars for the Girls Golf Program. Those donations allowed Girls Golf to add 34 new sites and support growing locations that doubled in size. for your health

Build a Birdie Breakfast A long day at the course requires high performance foods that supply essential nutrients needed for consistent energy and maximum endurance. Take the first step to eating like a pro by consuming a breakfast higher in muscle building protein, healthy long-lasting fat, and lots of nutrient-rich vegetables and fruits. These whole foods will not only help you hit it longer off the tee, but will keep your stomach from growling on the back nine or during that late-morning class!

Protein: eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, nitrate-free sausage or bacon, salmon, etc. Fat: avocados, nuts, butter, olives, olive oil, coconut oil, coconut milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. Vegetables: spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers, asparagus, etc. Fruits: berries, melons, oranges, apples, grapefruit, bananas, etc.

BIRDIE BREAKFASTS AT HOME • Cheesy Scrambled Eggs + Corn Tortilla + Salsa • Fried Eggs + Red Bell Pepper + Mushrooms • Oatmeal + Almond Milk + Blueberries + Vanilla • Omelet + Cheese + Asparagus + Yellow Bell Pepper • Scrambled Eggs + Sausage + Peppers + Red Potato • Smoked Salmon + Cream Cheese + Spinach + Tomatoes BIRDIE BREAKFASTS TO GRAB & GO • Banana Chocolate Protein Shake • Hard-boiled Eggs + Avocado + Cherry Tomatoes • Plain Yogurt + Walnuts + Strawberries + Cinnamon • Sprouted Toast + Almond Butter + Apple Slices • Sprouted Toast + Peanut Butter + Banana Slices ”Sprouted” bread is a healthier alternative to “whole wheat” bread. Sprouting increases vitamin content and predigests grains, making them more digestible.

BOGEY - AVOID THESE SUGARY BREAKFASTS! • Orange Juice + Raisin Bran + Low-Fat Milk + Banana = 115 grams of sugar Yikes! The sugar content in the breakfast above is equivalent to 3 cans of coke! • Low-Fat Fruit Yogurt + Granola + Dried Apricots = 95 grams of sugar • Chocolate Milk + Fruit Cereal Bar = 75 grams of sugar • Apple Juice + Chocolate Donut = 52 grams of sugar

Martin Golf Apparel–Look Well Put Together But Not Contrived

Golf industry icon Rick Martin, who returned to the business with his new company, Martin Golf Apparel, in 2011, is excited about Martin Golf Apparel’s new Fall 2012 collections. In keeping with Martin’s longtime philosophy of creating apparel that›s both traditional and timeless, the Fall 2012 Martin Golf Apparel collec-

tions will continue the company’s focus on not only natural fibers, but what Martin calls “natural colors” as well. “The Martin Golf Apparel color palette is something I’ve developed over a lifetime of experience in the apparel business,” says Martin, “and I’m proud that focus on traditional colors, as opposed to trendy ones, is

among the things I›m known for.” For Martin, too much modern golf apparel has strayed from the traditional path to which he adheres. “I remember watching last year’s U.S. Open, looking at the tour players 50

competing for the win, and being struck by the contrived look of their outfits,” recalls Martin. “The outfits had such a ‘costume’ feel, and also a stifling uniformity. Each piece was clearly designed to be worn only with pieces from the same collection. It’s great for TV but not my foursome.” “My idea of golf fashion is rooted in watching legends like Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan - gentlemen who always looked well put together, but never contrived. To that end, my goal is to create elegant, stylish but versatile garments that are related, but can be worn with anything. This, in addition to my commitment to using only natural fibers - no synthetics, no piecedtogether garments - is one of the cornerstones of what Martin Golf Apparel is all about.” Martin Golf Apparel’s Fall 2012 collections embody the philosophy that led Martin to launch the company. The Essentials Collection makes use of the company’s entire color palette, bringing to the golf apparel marketplace a variety of knits and sweaters that truly live up to the Martin Golf Apparel phi-

losophy, “as Timeless as the Game.” The Timeless Elements Collection offers items in a more specialized, yet still broad, range of colors. For more information, please visit www.martingolfapparel.com. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 2, Issue 6

A Luxurious Golf Destination Is Now Called

Home

Golf is coming into its own in Flagstaff.

While it perhaps is not the first destination one would think of to golf in Arizona, it should be. Golfing in the pines has become a paradise thanks to the Pine Canyon Club. The True Life Companies (TTLC) has just finished a real estate deal for the acquisition of The Pine Canyon Club and Residential Community, a 600+-acre, private, luxury golf course community in the

high country of Flagstaff, Arizona. They will bring a level of sophistication rarely seen in a place of such rustic natural beauty. It›s secluded. It›s special. And it›s being built around an 18-hole championship signature golf course, designed by Jay Morrish, who has designed renowned golf courses all over the world. The True Life Companies (TTLC), one of the country’s most respected strategic real estate investment and management firms, has accelerated its expansion into Arizona with the acquisition of The Pine Canyon Club and Residential Community. Headquartered in San Ramon, California with a regional office in Phoenix, TTLC completed the acquisition on November 2 capping a complex transaction that spanned well over six months. One of the newest golf communities in Flagstaff, Pine Canyon was built

within forest land. Morrish designed the course utilizing the rolling wooded areas and gave it his signature by placing trees in strategic places on the fairway. Pine Canyon’s beautiful stone and wood clubhouse overlooks the “fishing lake” and 18th green – an absolutely awe-inspiring view. There is a lovely community center for families as well. Located adjacent to the Coconino National Forest within the city of Flagstaff in a setting with stunning views of the San 52

Francisco Peaks, Pine Canyon offers a number of choices to match your lifestyle. Pine Canyon is currently offering five residential collections: detached mountain cabins, paired homes, townhome trios and custom estate homes and home-sites. As a homeowner, you have access to hiking trails and are within two miles of the spectacular Walnut Canyon that is filled with historical sites such as cave dwellings from earlier Indian residents. The community also boasts an awardwinning 35,000-square-foot clubhouse featuring a state-of-the-art fitness center, full-service spa, private dining room, mixed-grill, fine-dining restaurant and cocktail lounge. In addition, Camp Pine Canyon, is the home of the onsite kids camp featuring a large recreational pool, water slide, tennis courts and snack bar. Just across the golf practice park is Trout Creek Park, an extensive private creek and fishing ponds system stocked with trout and bass. Pine Canyon’s golf centerpiece boasts an island green 18th hole that is surrounded by one of Pine Canyon’s largest ponds. of TTLC, stated, “Our acquisition of this premier property in Flagstaff is the latest example of our unique expertise, which gives us the ability to find opportunities in the current real estate market before they emerge and move quickly in order to take advantage of them. Pine Canyon is a singular, first-class property in an ideal location. Our goal is to enhance the original design, build out the current plan and tailor it to second-home and vacation-home buyers in today’s real estate market.” Taber Anderson, TTLC’s’ Principal and CIO who is spearheading the company’s acquisitions with a particular focus on resort and recreational master plans along with being a reliable supplier of land and lots to large homebuilders, added, “Pine Canyon is a strategic opportunity for our company toward becoming one of the premier golf course community developers in the Western United States in this new economy. We are actively pursuing additional master plan opportunities throughout the West, and with our capital and unique ability to transform a good property into something truly superior, TTLC has the ability and vision to ensure the success of these types of

projects.” TTLC focus their investments and acquisitions on unique niche opportunities in key Western metro markets where economic recovery is anticipated to occur first. This includes areas such as Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Denver, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles and San Diego Counties where the housing markets have shown signs of stabilizing and early indications of sustained growth. “Our strategy is to identify and purchase land in partially completed subdivisions and large community developments that can be re-invigorated and relaunched in the current market at favorable competitive price points,” Clark explained. With over 150 years of combined industry experience in all facets of real estate acquisitions, development, management and homebuilding, TTLC derives its name from their dedication as stewards of the American Dream, creating communities of enduring value and establishing relationships based on a long-standing tradition of honesty and trust - creating the foundation that leads to brighter futures. Fake Out: Golf Group’s Anti-Counterfeiting Campaign Leads to Seizure of Thousands of Fakes in Recent Raids Extensive Counterfeit Operation Taken Down in Four Simultaneous Raids

The U.S. Golf Manufacturers AntiCounterfeiting Working Group today announced the completion of another successful raid of an extensive China-based counterfeit operation resulting in the seizure of nearly 5,000 fake golf products. In total, the group has worked with Chinese officials to identify and seize more than 12,000 counterfeit products during 2012. Based upon a lead supplied by the Golf Group, Chinese officials raided the Oriental Golf Store in Dongguan City along with two associated warehouses and an assembly workshop. In addition to seizing the fake golf products, the officials confiscated three sets of assembling machines and arrested the owners of the store. “Government support and enforcement against these criminals is paramount in sending a strong anti-counterfeiting message,” said Christa McNamara, Director of Corporate Communications for TaylorMade-adidas Golf. “We will continue our campaign to educate consumers about counterfeiting and as long as there are counterfeiters out there taking advantage of consumers, we’ll be working with government officials to bring these counterfeiters to justice.” “We make a substantial investment each year to develop authentic
