International Networking F
or me the word networking means… let everyone you meet know what you do, how you can help them do what they do, what you want, who you want, and how to make it happen. That’s being resourceful. It’s no big mystery that ING (International Network of Golf) was started by a couple of very cool Central Floridians, Mike and Linda Jamison. Every year they have a networking party at the show, and this year was Funtastic!! Along with its stated mission of enhancing and promoting communication and education in golf, the International Network of Golf also has another goal: Keep the fun in golf. ING, the 21-yearold, non-profit networking organization with headquarters in Lake Mary, did just that from ClubING at the PGA Show. Highlighting a lively three-day schedule was the Media Reception and Happy Hour on Thursday, sponsored by and TaylorMade-adidas Golf and Golfpac Travel of Altamonte Springs. LPGA Tour star Natalie Gulbis, part of the strong contingent of TaylorMade tour professionals, took part in a Q&A with a standing-room-only crowd in ClubING. Other activities included two awards presentations (Media and Business awards), a State of the Industry presentation by Pellucid Corp., and several sponsor displays featuring such companies as Circle of Trust, Cleveland Golf, Pin High Pro and Wilson. And, of course, the great networking that ING and its 450 members from around the world are known for. I read somewhere, I don’t remember where, or I would tell you… I swear, I would… that the PGA Merchandise show (held right here in O Town) is the annual barometer for the golf business, and with the increase in show attendees and over all participation we have an uplifting 2011 outlook!! It’s about time someone published positive. Two weeks later the Golf Industry Show was held here as well, and in late Feb the Club Managers Association of America has their conference here. Hey, speaking of networking...guess where I found the most adorable little intern ever? At “the club” (Tuscawilla Country Club that is) and guess what her name is? Caitlin McLarnon, how perfect is that? You wanna’ know what else she’s a beautiful, red-headed, high spirited lass who is studying marketing, public relations, and photography at UCF. Talk about luck of the Irish! Her father took her out golfing & she was hooked. He’s swung his clubs all over—through Ireland and South Africa, just to start. Cait played in High School and has been out on the course on her free time from school. Please join us in making her feel like part of this wackadoodle team hear at FGCM. Everyone just loves her already! BTW, is there something wrong with me if I think being on the course with my mate makes me feel kinda’ amorous, or is golf just very romantic?

Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? I have to use
a cliché answer because it’s true. My mom. I got my sense of humor from her, she taught me what unconditional love is and I guess I’m still a mama’s boy.
What’s your take on “cuddling”?
I like a little cuddle action.

PURE GOLF Black Bear Golf Club is a quintessential P.B. Dye designed championship links course stretching over 7,000 yards. It is truly a fun test for golfers of all skill levels. Unlike most typically flat Florida courses Black Bear presents a unique challenge with its undulating fairways, elevation changes and fast, well manicured greens. The course has some of the most dramatic bunkers you will ever experience in Florida as well as some of the biggest elevation changes. P.B. Dye lived up to his reputation as a designer of championship courses when he built Black Bear. The focus at Black Bear is pure golf. The club boasts one of the best practice facilities in Central Florida. With a double ended 400 yard range, 40,000 square foot short game complex, 6,000 square foot practice green and 19th hole - shoot out hole, Black Bear is the place to be if you want to improve your game. Shaun Webb, Hank Haney certified golf instructor makes Black Bear his home. Black Bear hosts several professional tour events annually as well as being home to select PGA and LPGA players. Play a tournament quality championship course for $50 or less and rub shoulders with a few LPGA or PGA pros. That’s nearly impossible anywhere else in the Orlando area. Black Bear Golf Course is about a 30 minute drive north of downtown Orlando. The course is set in Florida ranch country. The drive from the city is easy and relaxing. It is more than worth the few extra minutes drive both for the golf experience as well as the great value offered.

Where did you grow up? Deep River, Connecticut What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch?: My favorite sport to play is tennis. Favorite to watch is Polo or anything to do with horses. Do you enjoy playing golf? Are they’re any golfers in your family?: I do like playing golf. Am I any good?..No! :) My dad once tried to golf. He thought you had to use the tee every time you hit the ball! So no, not really any golfers in the family! What do you feel makes this club special? The people I work with are some of the nicest people I have ever met. Everyone here makes you feel welcomed. Also the course is beautiful. It is so big and there are no houses or anything around so you have complete privacy. If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? Modeling full time. My schedule is very flexible at the course though. I get to take off to go to modeling castings and anything else I might need to do. What is your most memorable moment working as a cart girl? Definitely would have to be when I first started working there I knew nothing about golfing or golf courses and I drove across a tee box and one of the golfers started yelling at me. I called my boyfriend to ask why the guy was so
Victoria Graham mad and he had to explain to me why I couldn’t do that. Now I get out and walk across if someone needs anything on the other side. What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? A golfer throwing a tantrum about how he hit the ball. He didn’t know I was parked on the side watching. He was throwing his golf clubs on the ground and all his golf balls in the woods. I definitely got a good laugh seeing this grown man screaming and yelling about his swing. His friends were really embarrassed. They tipped me pretty good throughout the rest of the day! What hobbies do you enjoy? Horse back riding, showing horses, and traveling! Favorite comedian? It’s a toss up between Brittany Harker and Mike Walo. Favorite type of movie? Comedy and action movies! I don’t like anything sappy or that makes me want to cry. Favorite charity to support? Blue Horse. It is a non profitable organization to give thoroughbred race horses an alternative to slaughter.
14
What else would you like for us to know about you? I grew up showing horses. I traveled all around the country with my dad and my horse winning many championships and top tens at major shows. I still have my horse but am focusing on my modeling career now. I hope one day to be successful at both!

Ultimate Custom Golf Cart Seats Define Stylish Comfort T he anniversary of the Ultimate Golf Seating’s luxurious and uniquely designed, innovative golf cart seats confirms consumers preference for exceptional style and comfort. “I felt confident there was a market for our high end custom golf cart seats. The seats were designed to capture a niche of customers who desire superior quality and detail,” said David Vahala, CEO, Ultimate Golf Seating, with headquarters in Elkhart, Indiana. “Our first year of selling golf cart seats has proven just that. Consumers across the United States are purchasing Ultimate Golf Seats and the reviews from them are very positive.” More communities and individuals are turning to golf carts as a vital mode of transportation. Golf carts are not only used by golfers playing their rounds on the course. People take golf carts to neighborhood activities, to shop at local stores and kids even use them to get to school. Golf cart transportation will continue to grow for the golfers and families alike. With this increased personal use of golf carts comes the individuals’ desire to customize their carts. There is a trend toward people purchasing private golf carts and adding many upgrade options to make their cart more stylish and useful. The Ultimate Golf Seats are designed to accomodate this customizing trend and desire. Comfort, style, ergonomics and quality are the staples of the Ultimate Golf Seat. These seats are crafted to be posture correct and back supportive, coupled with comfort unmatched in
16
previous golf cart seating. “When you sit in an Ultimate Golf Seat, you will immediately appreciate it is one of a kind and unmatched in comfort and quality,” states David Vahala. Ultimate Golf Seating has four styles of seats available, along with a palette of color selections. All of the seats can also be custom embroidered
to include, for example, a customer’s favorite club or team. The Luxury Bucket and Luxury Bench seats look like the type of seats you would find in a luxury car. Both feature adjustable headrests and lumbar support, and fold-down armrests. The Luxury Bucket style offers a center locking console, while the Luxury Bench style offers a center fold-down armrest. The seats are made with high-quality, marine grade vinyl for proven durability, while underneath is a foam made of a superior resiliency polyurethane similar to high-end mattresses. “Golf carts are outside a lot, so we wanted to use materials that are made to withstand UV rays, yet also be easy to clean with our Ultimate Stain Shield Protection coating,” said Vahala. The other two designs, the Premier Bench Seat and the Elite Bench Seat offer the same quality of materials and comfort as the Luxury series, but are designed for fleet use. “Ultimate Golf Seating’s innovative design will ideally fit most prominent golf cart brands,” said Vahala, “and they can be easily installed in just a few steps.” Pricing for the seats is from $745 to $1295. “Our seats offer a great alternative to standard seating in two important ways,” said Vahala. “How they feel for your back and how they look on your golf cart.” Additional information about Ultimate Golf Seating is available online at www.ultimategolfseating.com or by calling toll-free at (888) 989-9887. Making golf fun, social and saving an industry Orlando Social Golfer looks to boost participation in Greater Orlando
A
recent article in the Orlando Sentinel spelled it out very clearly, golf is slowly eroding around the country and even more so in Florida. A perfect storm of a sluggish economy, weather issues, the falling from grace of the games star and a very stale feel to the ancient game is driving golfers away. There are other factors too that should be looked at as well. Since 9/11 the mind set of most people in the United States has shifted to putting family and time spent together at the forefront. All of these factors have understandably put golf on the back burner for a growing chunk of the golf population. So what is golf as an industry to do?
OSG met at their local water hole (Caseys) in downtown Orlando. After a short chat and a couple of cold ones, it was clear these two had a lot in common: a passion for golf, a love for socializing and the unique persistence of dreaming outside of the box. Fast-forward to August 2010, after months of brainstorming, dreaming and some “serious” business meetings at Chick-Fil-A, OSG had officially come to life. The “Pied Piper” of “Pee Wee” Golf PGA Golf Professional, Brendon Elliott has always done things just a little bit different from the norm for a Golf Professional. Either by design or because of circumstances he has found himself in professionally. Take for example the position he holds at the historic Winter Park Country Club as the PGA Head Golf Professional & Club Manager where he has been for the past 13 years. “There is nothing “Normal” about Winter Park Country Club” Elliot jokes. “We are about as unique of a club as you will find in Central Florida or even in the entire State.” “We are a municipal, 9 hole, primarily walking golf course that uses a “Ball Drop” system in place of tee times to start play. People are just not used to that” Elliott explains. “We don’t have a driving range or a real practice area for that matter. Our Clubhouse and Golf Course is the second oldest in the area and has a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Winter Park Country Club was founded in 1914.” Elliot says. “Despite our differences, we are loved by many golfers in the greater Orlando area.” Elliott’s statement is backed up clearly by the distinction that Winter Park Country Club received back in August of 2010 when Orlando Magazine named WPCC as the “Second Best Public Course” in Central Florida. Like most PGA Professionals, Elliott is a jack of all trades. He has many various duties at Winter Park Country Club most of which see him in front of a computer doing administrative duties rather then out on the Golf Course. The biggest thing however that makes Elliott different from your normal Golf Professional is the way he goes about growing the game and how he fulfills his passion for teaching the game to others. “I teach golf to 3-8 year olds…almost exclusively” Elliot say’s with a smile. In 2008 Elliott formed Brendon Elliott Golf, LLC which was his golf instruction business based out of his home in Deltona, FL. “Since I did not have the space or the means of teaching golf at Winter Park Country Club I began my own instruction business based out of our home. We took out a small loan and had a synthetic green, fringe, rough and bunker put in our backyard and I purchased a large hitting net, video equipment, training aids 20

and everything else a teaching business would need and went to it giving lessons on my off time from WPCC.” Elliott explains. Shortly after the completion of his home teaching studio in the spring of 2008 came the birth of the junior golf program for which Elliott is now probably best know for, Little Linksters. “When we first started Little Linksters in early 2008, my wife and I did it because we saw a void. Kids in the pre-K through early grade school ages of 3-8
years old were not being introduced to Golf. They were offered Dance, Music, Karate, Computer, Soccer and even Foreign Language but not Golf. Other then what they saw on the Wii, Golf was foreign to many of these kids. It’s not mainstream like allot of other activities for these ages” Elliott passionately explains. It is understandable to many people that a great majority of Golf Professionals do not teach Golf to kids this young but Elliott does not agree with this line of Florida Golf Central • Volume 11, Issue 4
thought at all. “I understand completely that Golf is a difficult game to learn and that physically, many kids at these ages may not be ready to learn the finer points of the golf swing but in my mind, if we don’t give them an introduction to golf and let them know what its all about, get them excited about it, then we will loose them to all the other choices that they have offered to them. I can’t let that happen, there is way too much the game teaches beyond the act of hitting a ball into a hole that I feel kids should learn, especially in their developmental years.” Many people may ask the question, how do you get 3-8 year olds excited about golf? Elliott has come up with many great things to get kids excited about the game we all love. “That very question was one that we asked ourselves over and over again when we where developing our program. The first way we thought of to get kids “into” Golf was to develop some cool cartoon characters that were golfers. The creation of our characters, “Floppy, “Birdie” and “Bogey” back in early 2010 were key in our mission to excite “Pee Wees” about golf. We created a coloring book/program guide based around our characters and program and released that back in September of last year” Explains Elliott. The Little Linksters “Golf FUNdamentals” Coloring Book has attracted much attention over the course of the past few months and is something that Elliott and his team is very proud of. Beyond the Little Linksters program itself, Elliott has also come up with exciting ways to show that Pee Wee golfers can indeed play this game. Starting on December 1st of last year and lasting through January 15th of this year, Little Linksters, LLC along with its numerous vendors and supporters ran the 1st Annual “Little Linksters “Best Pee Wee Golf Swing in America” Video Contest. Kids from all across the country in three age groups, 3-4 years old, 5-6 years old and 7-8 years old were asked to submit video of their golf swings for the chance to not only be crowned as having the “Best Pee Wee Golf Swing in America” but also win some great prizes. The total prize package included items such as a complete set of clubs from US Kids Golf, apparel from the Littlest Golfer, and training aids from EyeLine Golf, Almost Golf, the Golfer’s Footprint, CSI Golf and MoRodz. The winners also received a great Little Linksters gift pack as well as free online lessons with Brendon Elliott through a great new technology from program partner, Golf Coach Direct. A total prize package for each age group was valued at nearly $800. Of course the biggest draw to the Florida Golf Central • Volume 11, Issue 5

Practice of a perfect motion, every single repetition, will improve a person’s motor skill 100’s of times quicker than conventional practicing where the person is only achieving a perfect motion occasionally. Perfect Golf Labs has developed muscle memory training equipment based on scientifically perfect golf motions. The machines are extremely adjustable to fit each individual golfer’s stature, club choice and stroke type preference. The machines adjust easily and quickly and once set to the golfers’ preference, the golfer then duplicates the scientifically perfect stroke every repetition engraining it quicker and more permanent than any other form of practicing. The end result is an immediate and dramatic improvement of their golf stroke and confidence in their game. Perfect Golf Labs’ equipment covers the entire swing from the short game with the just released Pendulum Perfect Golf Machine, to the full swing with two models of the Plane Perfect Golf Machine.

PGATOUR.COM: Why is it golfers want to be musicians and musicians want to be golfers? Or at least John Daly does. RUCKER: I’ve known John for 14 years and was just hanging out with him in Nashville recently. He is part of our family. I produced and co-wrote a song on his last record and every time he plays with us we have a great time. He’s one of those athletes who want to play music and he’s a really good guitar player. When John gets up there and takes his turn, it’s pretty cool. PGATOUR.COM: And plenty of your music pals love to play golf. RUCKER: Vince Gill is a great golfer, No Doubt drummer Adrian Young, he can go out and shoot 66 -- he’s an amazing golfer. Alice Cooper is the most boring golfer I’ve ever played with. He’s down the middle and on the green all day long. Huey Lewis is another guy who can really play. Florida Golf Central • Volume 11, Issue 5
PGATOUR.COM: You’ve also gotten to play with and know a lot of PGA TOUR players. Who are some of the guys on TOUR you hang with? RUCKER: You’re not going to believe this, but I’ve become really good friends with the Rinker brothers, Lee and Larry. Those guys are awesome and I’ll fly them up here whenever I can to give me lessons. I got to play with Mr. [Arnold] Palmer at Augusta and that was an amazing experience. I know Tom Kite and Tom Watson, but I’m still mad at Stewart Cink, though, because I wanted [Watson] to win. I also know Davis Love III, Peter Kostis and Gary McCord ... Jim Furyk, I’ve seen him a few times out on TOUR ... Brian Gay ... and D.J. Trahan, who is a Charleston guy who plays out at Bulls Bay, and Lucas Glover, another South Carolina guy, have both played in our charity event. Same with J.B. Holmes, and everyone from Tiger Woods to Brandel Chamblee. That’s one of the great things about golf -- we’ve been able to raise over $4 million through our charity event, “Monday after the Masters.” PGATOUR.COM: I think I read somewhere that you’re a 6 or 6.5 handicap? RUCKER: Yeah, I’m a 6 right now and I’m the guy who puts every card in. But the thing is, I’ll get hot and shoot 70 for 2 ½ weeks and then go a couple of weeks without playing and shoot in the mid-80s. I belong to a few different clubs, but I mainly play out of Bulls Bay (near Charleston) in South Carolina and I love playing at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island (S.C.). My wife is actually convinced the real reason I love living in Charleston is the golf is so accessible. PGATOUR.COM: Dream foursome? RUCKER: Tiger, Dr. [Martin Luther] King and Jesus.

Fifteen tournaments are scheduled on some of the finest courses in central Florida. “Last year we played a terrific schedule; this year our lineup is every bit as good” said Tom Mirus, Tour director. “We will be taking the tour to some new courses this year. We are returning to Grand Cypress and Victoria Hills rejoins the lineup after renovating their greens last year. We are excited about the coming season. We will again qualify fifty players (10 from each of the five flights) for the Tour Championship in October. Plus, our players competed for nearly $50,000 in prizes last year.” The Golfweek Amateur Tour/Orlando is the first Florida affiliate of the Golfweek Amateur Tour. There are local tours operating in 42 geographic areas with nationwide membership exceeding 3000. The Senior (50 & up) flights will continue play on Saturdays with the regular flights. Florida Superintendents Earn Environmental Stewardship Honors GCSAA/Golf Digest’s 2010 Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards were presented at the Golf Industry Show in Orlando on February 9th. Co-winners in the Resort Course Division were:
36
Christopher Flynn, CGCS, Marriott’s Grande Vista
Thomas Vlach, CGCS, TPC Sawgrass
Flynn, a 13-year GCSAA member, is a GCSAA certified golf course superintendent at Marriott’s Grande Vista, a resort in Orlando featuring towering pines, oaks and cypress trees surrounding the 9-hole, 2,300-yard, par-32 Grande Vista course, a 18-hole Grande Pines course, and a practice facility that is home to the Nick Faldo Golf Institute. Located at the headwaters of the Florida Everglades ecosystem, Grande Vista features 30 acres of native area, 10 acres of wetlands and 40 acres of ponds. Ten-feet-wide buffer strips of native grass along the in-play shorelines of the ponds protect the water, which is also tested twice-a-year to ensure maintenance practices are not negatively impacting water quality. Flynn has created a Native Area Improvement Plan with two neighboring resorts that focuses on enhancements, outreach and educating guests. Grande Vista, which is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, has partnered with the South Florida Water Management District to develop and build a nature trail that connects the resort to the adjoining conservation lands. Flynn also developed an initiative to become a designated property in the Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Green Lodging Program. He has a bachelor’s degree in plant science from the State University of New York at Cobleskill, and is enrolled in the environmental management graduate program at the University of Florida. Flynn is the two-time defending recipient of the J. Willard Marriott Award of Excellence.
Vlach, a 20-year GCSAA member, is a GCSAA certified golf course superintendent at TPC Sawgrass, a 36-hole resort in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., that lies on 400 acres of previous forest and swampland. TPC Sawgrass is home of the PGA Tour, the Players Championship, and the Nationwide Tour’s Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open Presented by Planters. Both tournaments combine to annually contribute more than $6.7 million to charity. In 2008, Vlach and his staff added a transfer line from the reservoir lakes to the irrigation pond, virtually eliminating the facility’s use of well water from the Florida aquifer. The reservoir lakes collect drainage water from surrounding communities that would have previously drained into the Atlantic intercoastal waterway. TPC Sawgrass is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program and Vlach and his staff work closely with the St. Johns County wildlife management department, as well as Beaches Emergency Aid and Kare Sanctuary. Vlach has a bachelor’s degree in turf management from the University of Wisconsin. He is a past president of the Alabama GCSA and a past vice president of the Palm Beach GCSA. His staff regularly updates a blog with environmental information for golfers, and TPC Sawgrass leverages the national attention surrounding the Players Championship each year to highlight its environmental stewardship. Vlach hosts high school students from St. Augustine Tech each semester to provide hands-on experience with all aspects of the golf course management operation, including environmental stewardship, and his staff also provides facility tours to resort guests and a Jacksonville-based Autism awareness program. Tom started his superintendent’s career at the original Winter Springs G.C. Florida Golf Central • Volume 11, Issue 5
Robert M. Randquist, CGCS, director of golf course and grounds at Boca Rio Golf Club in Boca Raton, Fla., was elected president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) at the association’s annual meeting Feb. 11. Randquist is a 34-year GCSAA member, and has been at Boca Rio Golf Club since 1998. Previously, he was superintendent at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., for 19 years, where he hosted the 1982 and 1994 PGA Championships, the inaugural 1987 USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship and the 1995 and 1996 PGA Tour Championships. Randquist has a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Oklahoma. He serves on The Environmental Institute for Golf Board of Trustees, is a member Palm Beach GCSA, and a past president of the Oklahoma GCSA. Randquist is also a member of the Florida Turfgrass Association and the USGA Green Section committee.

BlackBeard Rum BlackBeard Spiced Rum boasts deep rich vanilla and caramel aromas with high notes of oak. At first sip, aggressive vanilla, caramel and secret spices mingle with the soft aged Puerto Rican rum coating your palate to prepare it for the 86 proof bite as it sails through your mouth. BlackBeard Spiced Rum is made by Destilería Serrallés, the manufacturers of Puerto Rico’s #1 selling rum, DonQ. BlackBeard is a rum of exceptional quality and smoothness exhibiting traditional spiced rum characteristics paired with a unique blend of exotic fruits and proprietary spices of the Caribbean. BlackBeard was the most notorious and feared pirate in the early 1700’s. He carries a legacy that evokes an elusive and dark character romanticized well beyond his death. BlackBeard’s name was derived from his thick, black beard and formidable presence.

duffer dan
Duffer Dan at El Campeon
O
ur journey this month took us just north of Orlando to the quiet hamlet of Howey-In-The-Hills. The award winning championship El Campeon golf course is one of two great layouts at the Mission Inn Resort and one of the oldest courses in the state, dating back to 1917, but certainly not dated. In fact at over 7000 yards with 85 feet elevation changes, it is exactly what its name suggests-El Campeon which means The Champion in Spanish. It will test your mettle, your woods, your hybrids, your wedges and especially your putter. The massive oaks and towering pines were probably planted back then and complement the beauty of the design and border the lush fairways. In 2010 the greens were replaced with Ultra Dwarf Bermuda and reconfigured to an average of 1500 square feet larger with more undulation and speed. They consistently run 10+ on the stimpmeter, so bring your A game when you come to play this treasure. The entire Resort was designed in a Spanish architectural style, so your first impression is of being somewhere other than Central Florida. The beautiful clubhouse includes not only the well stocked pro shop, Spa Marbella, the state of the art fitness center El Corredor, and handsomely decorated Knickers Restaurant that overlooks the first fairway of Las Colinas, the 1992 Gary Koch design 2nd course. I heartily suggest a delightful meal expertly prepared by Chef Danny Connelly with outstanding service. Outside the clubhouse is an expansive practice putting surface which I suggest all you duffers putt a few on to get ready for the Augusta like speedy greens. Their practice area is huge and is the home of 3 different golf schools; The Bird Golf Academy, Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy and their own Mission Inn Academy. Before you take off to the first tee make sure you have some liquid refreshment, because you won’t be back till the 18th. There is cart service available. After checking with the starter and getting

The 2nd hole is one of the easiest, a 176 yard par3 with water on either side of the fairway prior to a receptive elevated green. My score didn’t reflect the hole’s handicap but it did mine. After the par 4 third, we arrived at the tee box of the 4th, a 405 yard par 4. The tee shot here is over water to a sizable fairway that I would not want to climb without a cart. The yardage is a bit deceiving, besides not having a good view of the green with a false front, which a fair amount of the greens employ. Add a club or two to your second shot to insure reaching the ‘dance floor’. The 5th & 6th are both par 4’s with downhill tee shots and then second shots uphill to the greens. The toughest hole on the front nine is the par 4,7th, a monster 457 yards from tee to green with a creek running through the fairway. The tee shot should be a little right to give you a good angle into the green. For mere mortals, a third shot into the green will give a chance for par. The eighth hole will test your precision. The 190 yard par 3 is a downhill shot to a peninsula green with water front and right, and bunkers left and back. A short prayer is in order. The significance of the short par 4 9th is it gives you a great look at the Inn which is right behind the tee box. If you never had the opportunity to stay at the relaxing Mission Inn, you are missing a great time, with fine dining and a host of other activities to enjoy. You might think 7000 yards is a bit much going up and down beautiful rolling hills, but there are 5 sets of tees to match your ability and make your El Campeon experience both memorable
and fun. The back nine begins with another par 5 that needs an accurate first shot, keeping it left of the tree that guards the hard dogleg right to the wide open green-another chance for a good par or an exceptional birdie. Turn around and go back the other way on 11th hole with a hard dogleg left par 4. The longest 3 par is #12 at 240. Thirteen is a mirror image of #4 over water, a little shorter but right up the hill, and then you turn around and go down the hill on another breathtaking par 5, the 14th with a drive left of the pond for another opportunity for birdie. The shortest par 3 plays across water and to the left 142 yards to another peninsula green. The closing holes are really spectacular. Number16 is a straight away par 4 with an island green with sand between green and surrounding water. If you can stop your second shot on the smallish green, birdie can be had. The #1 handicap Devil’s Delight, #17, a double dogleg par 5 that needs at least 3 shots to the green and usually more. The sloping green is fronted by a pond with deep bunkers in the back. Take a deep breath and enjoy the view of the Inn and the manicured gardens to the right before attempting to cross the water. It’s worth the extra moment. The gorgeous camelias were all in bloom throughout the property. The finishing hole is a par 4, 423 yard dogleg right with water between tee box and fairway. Risk reward is key here. Take out the big dog and cut the corner which, if you make it, leaves a short iron into the green. You need to play one of Florida’s Best Kept Secrets and truly a great golf experience-El Campeon. hat has more than 10 miles of aisles, filled with over 1,000 vendors, previewing thousands of golf products for more than 41,000 PGA professionals and golf business executives? What drew the golfing community from every state in the union and 80 countries from around the world? Yes! You guessed it- The 2011 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando Florida! More important, it was also the site for “Mike’s and Sean’s Excellent Adventure!” Every major and minor golf company in the world was present and accounted for. Big names and bright stars, amazing golf-related equipment and fashion were the hallmark of this annual three-day event. The experience was incredible and overwhelming. We knew this was going to be a unique experience as soon as we entered the cavernous hall at the Orange County Convention Center. As far as the eye could see, golf products bombarded our senses. This visual scene of Americana took our breaths away. Thousands of participants, mostly men, in tan colored Dockers, carrying white manpurses with logos like “Golf Buddy” milled about. They were like us, with glazed eyes and vacant stares while walking aimlessly in circles. Fortunately, Sean Harney and I were 52
Kimberly brought out of our trance-like reveries by two of the most charming young women we had ever laid eyes on. They brought us back to reality with their presentation of a product, by Bizmark (http://www.bizmarkgolf.com/ ) which is the very foundation of golf. They held in their beautiful and delicate hands, small pink circular devices that they said, they would use to wash our balls. We were instantly captivated. I knew right then that we had died and gone to golf heaven. Of course we were more than willing......When in Rome do as the Romans do.... and all that.... I was grabbing my belt in preparation to use their ball washers when they gently burst my bubble. It was, however, a fast way to meet Security at the event... Moving on down the aisle past a myriad of “must have” mind-blowing golf products, my mind drifted to the ongoing problem I am having with my 3 Fairway Wood. I am not able to
launch my ball into the air towards the green. As you might imagine, this is having a negative impact on my game. My playing partners tell me my problem is due to my limited athletic abilities, complicated by an acute shortage of coordination. My club’s superintendent and the Sierra Club appreciate me, because I am their “go to” organic worm Ball Wash Girls eradication application. I am twice as effective when they give me a Mulligan. It was then, that all became right with my world. I spied a heavenly sight that drew me to the bosom of the future of my golf game. There was Kimberly, the model for Tour Edge’s booth. She is blond and beautiful and she was holding my future close to her heart. I was staring at two of the most beautiful and well rounded clubs heads I had ever seen, from the minds of engineers at Tour Edge. The 3 Fairway Wood of my dreams grabbed my attention. I wanted it and I wanted it bad. It was beautiful. The bottom had an amazing shape. It was built to launch my balls. I discussed my golf-related mental health issues with Jay Hubbard, Vice President of Marketing for Tour Edge. (http://exoticsgolf.com/) He said I could not bring Kimberly home, and instead urged me to try Tour Edge’s new 3 Wood. He suggested a particular shaft for my unique game along with the new and improved club head. I am using this club. When hitting this club and thinking of Kimberly I am able to launch my balls into the air with the greatest of ease. I am thinking of getting some blue balls from Chromax (http://www. chromaxgolf.com/) to match the family jewels. If you have never use Chromax multi colored balls you are in for a treat. “Smiley” Dennis McGugan, the Chromax representative guarantees you will play golf in a totally new and unique way. My experience has been positive. Everybody at my club knows my Chromax balls. When they find them in the woods, they return them because they are so distinctive. Golf: Weather or Not! G
olf... It is a wonderful sport that can be played anytime and anywhere. I learned throughout my junior career that golf is a lot more than just hitting a ball. Believe me, the conditions in which you play are one of the primary factors in the game of golf. People often shoot higher scores because they fail to consider the weather. When I started my career in Hawaii, I quickly adapted to playing in the wind. After factoring the wind, my game got better. As hard as it may seem to believe, it might be good when you hit that weak fade into the wind, which holds it back. This can be good for your score. Never underestimate the wind. Something as simple as a two mile-per-hour wind will make your ball trigger off-line. That is why I don’t practice just one shot. Luckily for me, the four seasons tend to come into play a lot in Hawaii. You have the hot, muggy days where the ball tends to travel further; the cold days where you just don’t seem to get enough distance off the tee; and the most dreaded of them all, the rain. When people think about playing in the rain, they look at all the negative aspects. Some tour players actually play better in the rain for many reasons. When you are playing in the rain your ball gets a lot of spin. If you like spin, then you are in luck. If you are a long ball player, you are out of luck because you could easily lose 15 yards off the tee. In late 2008, I moved to La Quinta, California, where the weather is always hot. My driver plays a big factor in my scoring because I know that I can putt well on the greens. As much as I like to bomb a drive, there are other things that I must work on to stay in tournament shape. When I’m on the range, I don’t work on just one shot. I work on a lot of different trajectories, shapes, and distances. This pays off a lot in my international tournaments.
When I went to Scotland over the summer to play, I found out that it’s not all about the long ball there. On the first day of a match play event, I took advantage of the short holes and pulled out the driver. I did not take into

two times the whole day. Nevertheless, I played a great round of golf and won my match. That trip to Scotland will help me throughout my golfing career. Now, where ever I play, short courses, long courses, dry courses, or wet courses, I know that it’s not just the course I’m competing against, it’s also the weather and playing conditions. So, wherever you may be, even if it’s your home course, take every aspect of the weather and playing conditions into consideration. These are some of the biggest factors in improving your game. And, as always, remember to hit it long and straight!! ‘Till next month, JJ

Keith is the “GO TO GUY” for everybody in the locker room and has been for years. He watches over us like a mother hen. He does it all with a smile, food, drinks, poker games, gin games and stays late until the last guys leave and never complains. He’s a friend, and you can’t ask for anything better than that!

hones are ringing, golfers are coming off of the 18th green and the men’s locker room is full of custom-
ers. Then there’s my dad, Keith Sills, saying with a smile, “Hi. How can I help you?” This story actually started 10 years ago in Indiana, just outside of Chicago. Sills had just retired after working 30 years in a steel mill. He got his bartenders license and briefly got a job at a local country club. He decided he could not take the cold weather anymore and chose to move us to the Orlando area. We explored various communities and determined the Oviedo-Winter Springs area would be best for us. “I knew I wanted to work at Tuscawilla Country Club even before I moved here. I researched the club on the internet and was impressed by the facility,” said Sills. He has worked at Tuscawilla for nine years and is really grateful that all of the members are so friendly and make him feel like part of the family. The comradery between members and employees has a positive impact on the working environment. Keith has an outgoing and humorous personality. He can be found having lengthy discussions with total strangers. These personality traits work to his advantage at Tuscawilla. He thoroughly enjoys his interactions with the members and fellow employees and they all seem to feel the same way about him. 58

How Do I Get Into The Golf Business?
F
or many, the game of golf is a passion, so why not make it a career? The business of golf is a $76 billion a year industry. It is consistently looking for talented people to fill many positions at clubs, resorts, organizations and companies. For more than thirty years, Golf Academy of America (GAA) has helped thousands of people live their dream of a golf career. GAA is an ACICS-accredited educational institution offering a comprehensive curriculum of golf instruction and business management. Students can earn an associate degree in Golf Complex Operation and Management while learning virtually every aspect of the golf industry. Presently, graduates from Golf Academy of America serve the golf industry as teaching professionals, tournament organizers, club managers and golf course owners, manufacturing representatives and product development specialists as well as in many other golf career options. “We are the launching point for people passionate about the game of golf and who wish to pursue it as a career,” said
60
Chris Hunkler, president of Golf Academy of America. “In as little as sixteen months, a graduate will have many options to choose from in the golf industry. Our campus career placement directors have an 85-percent rate of success in matching graduates with viable golf industry opportunities. And that career support does not end upon graduation. It continues throughout their entire careers.” GAA has four campuses nationwide located in popular golf destinations: Orlando, Myrtle Beach, Phoenix and San Diego. Campus tours include a free round of golf with the pros. Financial aid programs are available for prospective students who qualify. Each facility offers the latest golf technology and state-ofthe-art equipment such as V1, KVest, MEGSA, DBS, Trackman, Fore Golf and Fore Tee. Additionally, there are more than forty PGA professionals on staff to provide full-time instruction in the classroom and on the golf course. Each student will attend over 1,200 hours of golf specific education classes with curricula that include: Golf Operations; Planning and Organizing Tournament Golf; Outside Operations; Golf Club Fitting and Repair, Rules of Golf, Attitude and Motivation; Mechanics of the Short Game; History of Golf; Rules of Golf; Marketing and Advertising; Promotions and Sales; and more. “There is no doubt GAA graduates are enormously well-educated and more than adequately prepared to step right into a wide array of positions in the golf industry,” said Buck Page, the national Career Services director for Golf Academy of America. “The GAA has earned a reputation in the golf industry for producing a golf professional who can step right into
any situation and be an immediate asset to an employer.” “The Golf Academy of America is the most comprehensive golf university in the industry today,” said Dave Phillips, co-founder of the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, Calif. The students are exposed to the newest golf technologies in the world. They have an advisory staff of golf professionals from all over the world that are able to assist in the design of a curriculum that covers all aspects of the business of golf.” Thousands of GAA graduates are presently working at many locations around the world. Examples of some positions currently filled by GAA graduates include head golf professionals at Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic; Trump National in suburban New York City; Isleworth and Windermere Golf Clubs in Orlando, Fla.; and Providence Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. There are also GAA graduates working at golf management groups such as Troon Golf, Ameriican Golf, Kemper Sports Group and Marriott Golf, and golf manufacturers, including: Titleist; Callaway Golf; Bridgestone Golf; Cleveland Golf; and TaylorMade-Adidas. Others are serving as golf instructors for Jim McLean, Dave Pelz, Nick Faldo, Dick’s Sporting Goods, GOLFTec and Golf Digest. “Golf Academy of America was my path to a great golf career,” said Eric Busto, 28, head golf professional at Trump National Golf Club near New York City. “To have an opportunity like this is the dream come true. I am proof that if you have a passion for the game of golf, you can find a great career in the industry as well.” For more information about Golf Academy of America, visit www.GolfAcademy.edu, or call (800) 342-7342.

reated by Forbes Riley, a 2010 National Fitness Hall of Fame Inductee, SpinGym® is a unique hand-held fitness product designed for people of all levels of fitness: from athletes to seniors, rehab to recreation. Strength and flexibility will only help your golf game. But for many golfers, driving to a gym to lift weights or use expensive machines is simply unnecessary. You need a focused power to play golf and where is THAT type of training in the gym? Traditional weight training relies on gravity or tension like that found in resistance bands, but SpinGym provides a whole new type of micro muscle strength and power training uniquely suited for golfers. Compact and light enough to carry in your golf bag, take on an airplane, or use it at your desk in the office--SpinGym’s strength building resistance comes from the torque created by its spinning central disk. The effect on your muscles can be felt instantly in your shoulders, arms, back and core - making it a quick and reliable tool for those looking to improve their golf game. SpinGym is ideal for that important pre-golf warm up. Exercises designed specifically to warm up rotator cuffs include the “Bow and Arrow” and the “Lawnmower”. Studies have proven that an effective warm-up can not only

improve your game, but it also helps to prevent injury. Included in the SpinGym package is a comprehensive DVD
workout series which includes a stretch series that is helpful for warming up the back, neck and core— essential for the twisting and muscle strain that accompanies swinging a golf club. About SpinGym: Stylish, portable, compact, and weighing less than one pound, SpinGym® is a revolutionary new fitness product. Its award-winning, modern European design combines the physics of inertia and isokinetics to create a completely unique way to train, strengthen and sculpt the muscles of the arms, shoulders, back and core in just 5 minutes a day. This principle is called GRT (Gyrotronic Resistance Training®), and unlike free weights or gym machines, each rotation of the SpinGym® energizes and activates all the muscles of the upper body simultaneously - a breakthrough in the world of fitness. SpinGym® not only provides resistance, but because of the rotational forces created--it becomes a complete fat melting, calorie burning total body gym. SpinGym is offered with fitness and cardio workout instructional DVDs. www.MySpinGym.com..

➌ Touredge JMAX Gold A master of escape, the JMAX Gold hybridfairway club helps players get out from even the most difficult lie. The JMAX is a low profile hybrid-fairway. That’s right, a hybrid-fairway. It has a longer shaft than a hybrid and a smaller head than a fairway wood. It is ideal for golfers who struggle with hitting fairway woods but love their hybrids. The JMAX Gold hybrid-fairway has a super-thin, hyper steel face and walls that allow more weight to be repositioned in the sole. The resulting weight shift creates an extremely low center of gravity that gets shots up quick and provides a remarkable level of forgiveness. On impact, the heavy radius sole produces a crisp feel and “hot” launch, with minimal club head twisting and reduced drag. The JMAX Gold hybrid-fairway makes hitting great shots a reality and not an illusion – try it once and you’ll see how easily the ball escapes. The club comes with Tour Edge Golf’s lifetime warranty, a 30-day play guarantee and has a suggested retail of $99. For more information, call (800) 515-3343 or visit www.touredge.com. 70
