Benign Masochism Watching “CBS Sunday Morning” is one of my many simple pleasures. I feel comforted from the sounding of the Miles Davis trumpets in the intro, and the cleverly designed suns that segue to commercial break while a glass of iced over Mimosa sits on the table. This is all part of the over all pleasurable experience. I usually cry, laugh, and just simply feel like a better person after having watched. A few weeks ago they had a segment about simple pleasures, and how they’re not that simple, with Paul Bloom a Yale Grad and Author of the book ‘’How Pleasure Works, The Science of Why We Like What we Like. It’s really not that simple. I’ve seen it for years with Golfers, why they enjoy the pleasure and pain or challenge, at the same time. It’s compared to eating hot chili peppers, simply put. I’ve learned some pleasures are universal, sex, sleep, food and golf. Or sleeping during sex and then playing golf, while eating. I don’t know. Studies show that mastering the negative is part of the pleasure. HUH??? Maybe this can explain women who like men who treat them like crapola. I am challenged by the stress of working independently and as a small publisher in these times, and having pleasure of working with the fun and talented people in our group of wack jobs. We are introducing a new victim, who is very familiar with sickness of wanting to work in the field of golf. Former C.E.O., President, supervisor, marketing manager, sales manager, salesman and product designer, Ken Rudin, has chosen “Golf Central Magazine” as his next venture. “I believe in the value of this publication for golf companies, golf destinations and other worthwhile businesses to advertise in this fine publication,” says Rudin. “There are many opportunities in Southeast Florida for companies to get great exposure for a comparatively low cost and I look forward to spreading that message.” Having had experience at Ron Miller Golf Bags, Edwin Watts, Boca Raton Resort and Club, and Belding Sports, as well as being an independent sales representative, “Golf Central Magazine” is pleased and proud to have such an experienced individual as part of our staff. I had the pleasure of spending time with Ken in the interview process and I look forward to what he can do to help businesses advertise their products. In today’s economy, it is understandable that a knowledgeable salesperson such as Ken Rudin had many opportunities for employment. It is comforting to me that he chose us as his first choice. We will see you out at the Festivals of Speed-Ritz Carlton, Git R Done Foundation-Grand Cypress, and The Children’s Miracle Network Classic-Disney. PS. Not really on the Cain Train, but as a small businessperson I salute the 9-9-9 plan. Congrats Herman. 4

PURE GOLF Black Bear Golf Club is a quintessential P.B. Dye designed championship links course stretching over 7,000 yards. It is truly a fun test for golfers of all skill levels. Unlike most typically flat Florida courses Black Bear presents a unique challenge with its undulating fairways, elevation changes and fast, well manicured greens. The course has some of the most dramatic bunkers you will ever experience in Florida as well as some of the biggest elevation changes. P.B. Dye lived up to his reputation as a designer of championship courses when he built Black Bear. The focus at Black Bear is pure golf and after over a year of intensive investment the course is in outstanding condition. The club boasts one of the best practice facilities in Central Florida. With a double ended 400 yard range, 40,000 square foot short game complex, 16,000 square foot practice green and 19th hole - shoot out hole, Black Bear is the place to be if you want to improve your game. Black Bear hosts several professional tour events annually as well as being home to select PGA and LPGA players. Play a tournament quality championship course for $50 or less and rub shoulders with a few LPGA or PGA pros. That’s nearly impossible anywhere else in the Orlando area. Black Bear Golf Course is about a 30 minute drive north of downtown Orlando. The course is set in Florida ranch country. The drive from the city is easy and relaxing. It is more than worth the few extra minutes drive both for the golf experience as well as the great value offered.

It's Easier to Increase Revenue Than Continue to Cut Expenses rounds and a healthier Net Operating Income at your course. If you haven’t ever written a marketing plan for your golf course follow these simple steps and you’ll have the beginning of a dynamic marketing plan using the market research you collect.

Step 1) Write down all the business segments of play that you have been able to capture at your course this year. Include the number of rounds and revenue generated from each segment. Example: # Annual Membership 10,000 Outside Play 14,000 Tournaments 6,000 Outings 2,000 League Play 2,000

Revenue $ 470,000 $ 714,000 $ 312,000 $ 104,000 $ 58,000

Etc. Step 2) Competitor Survey - Write down ALL of the potential business segments of play that exist in your market (competitors) that you can even conceive of: membership (all categories), outside play, tournaments/outings (all categories),

phoning them. I can almost guarantee you that your Chamber of Commerce has a listing of charitable organizations that you can get or buy. Most likely you got their business when they called you and your staff serviced their needs well. If this is your situation I’ve got a new promotional plan for increasing this segment of market play: PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL THEM BEFORE THEY CALL YOUR COMPETITION. Now that’s service. Cost? $0. Same for corporate outings, leagues, and other group business targets.

Step 5) Repeat Step 4, first sentence, over and over again.

The perfect time for all your research and marketing organization is Thanksgiving through New Years no matter where your golf course is located. No one is in a buying mood. The holidays are upon us. The next best time is yesterday. And the third “most perfect” time is today. Get prepared now and you’ll be able to book more business in 2011/2012. January 2 through Easter is the selling season for golf courses (tournaments, outings, leagues, banquets, weddings, etc). Every business with inventory – tee times and event space are your inventory - needs a sales and marketing plan. And those plans start with market research.

What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch? I love watching football and baseball!! What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? I am a very social person so I enjoy meeting and talking to everyone. The least favorite part is that it is so hot outside.

Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? How you prefer dress if you were given a choice? I think the dress is fine, shorts and a polo nothing wrong with that.

What type of music do you prefer?

I listen to just about everything, I love music and literally always have something playing. 14

When I use to live back in Venice we would go to an event called “C&R” it was a big mud hole to go fourwheeling. My favorite thing to do though is going on the boat fishing. I could definitely do it everyday.

What is your idea of “the perfect date”? Is there such a thing, haha. I would say grabbing a couple of drinks at a restaurant on the water and watching the sunset. I want a fairy tale ending, I do believe there are some guys out there who are honest and real gentlemen.

Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails?

I enjoy both, just depends on my mood. Nothing beats sitting at home in my pajamas watching a movie but it’s hard to pass up a night downtown.

A typical panel base system can be installed, by the homeowner, in less than one day without the need to hire a contractor or any other skilled laborers. With panel base technology, the precision-molded panel creates a near perfect surface and, when the panels are interlocked, they create a smooth base for the synthetic turf that goes on top resulting in a very smooth roll on the green. social golf

Take a Lesson from the Pros –

Why Social Media Is Good for Golf Courses and Golfers Watch the Golf Channel today, and you will continually hear from pros like Ian Poulter, Bubba Watson, Stewart Cink and many others talk about their Twitter accounts. They often brag about the amount of followers they have and even post updates in the middle of a tournament! Why is social media so important to them that they go as far as posting online while on the course, when they are supposed to be focused on executing their next shot and winning the tournament? The reason Ian Poulter will post an update while playing is the same reason a golf course should consider a social media strategy. The bottom line is that an effective social media presence will increase sales. Now sales is not the only thing social media can deliver: With a successful strategy, a golf course can improve on its brand, stay connected with customers, offer special discounts and, most importantly, provide customer service when its customers are away from the course. I read an article a few months back in USA Today that noted how Poulter posted online a picture of himself shaking hands with Prince Charles at the Ryder Cup. Dean Stromwell

By Rick Harris, Sr.

Our Man in the World Am for 2011…with a kicker ending!

T

here is an old saying in golf that goes “When it’s your day… It’s YOUR day! For Dean Stromwall from Apopka, Florida it should have read “When it’s your week… It’s YOUR week!” especially when playing in the latest World Amateur Golf Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. For the four days in Flight 59(age 70 and above) Dean put together net scores of 72, 74, 64, and 65 to earn first place and a spot in the fifth day event that took place at the TPC in Myrtle Beach. Now here is the kicker part! On the fourth day the first four leaders in each flight are placed in the same foursome on a head to head basis by the tournament which adds a little pressure to the leader and the players that are chasing him. Entering Thursday’s event Dean found himself four shots off the lead of fellow competitor Bill Wallace. At the end of the round Bill had extended his lead to six shots and was the apparent winner in the flight. Figuring that he had no chance to play in the finals

Dean and his wife promptly left that afternoon for a visit to his summer home in North Carolina. On Friday, Dean called me on his cell phone to find out the final results in his flight and was dumbfounded when I told him he had won Flight 59! As a result of believing that he had lost Dean was NOT present to play in the finals of the World Amateur Golf Championship at the TPC in Myrtle Beach. A few days later I followed up with an inquiry as to what happened to the apparent flight winner and learned that he had been disqualified. The good news is that Dean earned $600 in prizes which can be picked up anytime during the next year. Dean is a 79 year old golfer, who resides in Apopka, Florida and competes against other seniors in a variety of or-

ganizations including the Senior Amateur Golfers Association (SAGA) which was founded and managed by this writer. Eight months ago Dean had a knee replacement and after recuperating for several months he began playing again. The combination of the knee replacement, rehabilitation, and advancing age caused his handicap to go from a 15 handicap to a 17.3 index. It should be noted that Dean is a retired Air Traffic Controller; 5 time club champion at the Errol Estates Country Club, and a previous World Am Flight winner in the Senior 55 years and older bracket. He has played with a number of organizations all over the United States and has won golf championships in Traverse City, Michigan; San Antonio, Texas; and has competed in events in Pebble Beach and Bandon Dunes in Oregon. Dean stated that hopefully he will be able to compete at the World Amateur Golf Championship in Myrtle Beach next year when he turns 80 years old. Way to go Dean!

Lucas Black— A big drawl and a real swing! L

ucas York Black was born to Larry and Jan Black on November 29, 1982 in Decatur, Alabama. Without any formal acting lessons, Lucas made his film debut with a small part in the Kevin Costner film The War (1994) at the age of 11. He did a few small parts in 1995 and he was next seen in the sleeper-hit Sling Blade (1996) and then in another dark film Ghosts of Mississippi (1996). A bit of Calvin Klein modeling and mainly school and sports occupied the rest of his spare time. He scored another summer hit with The X Files(1998) and finally got a lead role in the independent film Crazy in Alabama(1999). Selective about his film roles, Lucas turned down

Lucas Black had experience playing competitively, and I think it helped tremendously for the role, because there are certain things--the way a golfer carries himself, his demeanor--that it would be hard for an actor to fake. All the swings and putts were mine.”

Do you have your own charity or is there a charity close to your heart? I don’t have one of my own but I support several golf foundations in Missouri.

What was the greatest moment in your career? I hadn’t really thought about it. I don’t want to come off the wrong way, but I haven’t really had that experience. I started as a kid but never really dreamed of being an actor. Now, if I were to succeed in a golf tournament, I would have that moment. I definitely have more passion about golf than acting.

What is your most treasured item? I am not materialistic…that’s for sure. My wife and I just had a little girl 9 weeks ago—they are definitely the most important thing to me.

Lucas Black and Robert Duval an opportunity to star in the movie adaptation of The Horse Whisperer(1998) due to the request of having his accent altered. In 2000, he was seen with Matt Damon in All the Pretty Horses. He has worked just about every year since then and can now be seen in the just released Seven Days in Utopia. AZ Golf Central Magazine got to sit down with Lucas Black recently and he shared some insight into his views on golf, movies and life. He was proud to tell us that he is a real golfer.” I’ve 24

What’s the top song in your ipod right now? Well, I have putting a ‘little gravel in my travel’ by listening to Rodney Atkins’ Take a Back Road.

How many times a month do you get out and play? When I don’t work, I play every day. For the past few years, I have been doing a project a year, so for a few months I can’t play. But I still try to practice daily from April to September. I have been taking my game more serious over the last 3 ½ years.

Do you have a favorite course to play? Well, Pebble Beach and Spy-

glass are great. But, in Missouri, I like Old Hawthorne and Boone Valley.

What was your favorite TV show growing up? To be honest, I didn’t really watch much TV. I started acting at age 10. But I do remember watching a few fishing shows.

Who are some of the celebrities you were star struck by? I have met a lot of sports figures and golfers but I don’t really idolize anyone. It’s just not the way I was raised. I guess you can say that I can work with great actors and not make them uncomfortable because I don’t put them on a pedestal. I don’t think people should be put in that position. Afterall, we don’t really know the person. We should just appreciate their skills.

Who was your mentor growing up? Whether we realize it or not, there are many people in our lives who mentor us all the time. We take something from each person we come across. But,definitely my dad and my father in law. And, my golf coach.

Do you have a favorite quote that you live by? I really like the one by Dick Vitale, “If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day.”

If you could change one thing about the acting world today, what would it be? There is always something in every job that we could change. But I think the movie industry is getting away from making movies like this. It’s so hard to find a G movie that isn’t animated, is entertaining and has value with good actors in it. Hollywood is too worried about strong faith messages and moral lessons because the audience might be offended. I think they are too mainstream focused. Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 5

Jim Liu puts 18 holes of pressure on the leader Jacksonville Open Nationwide event. Although overshadowed by the fame of the Stadium Course, the Valley course is no push over. Unless you are, of course, Gavin Hall who celebrated his 17th birthday with a smooth 64 to lap the field and take a 3 shot lead. This was no small task for Hall as this was only his 2nd start since June while recovering from an injury. Liu threw in a 2 under 70 but wasn’t enough to take the lead. On Day Three, Hall started with a 3 stroke lead and had a long list of players breathing down his neck. Since he had not yet won an AJGA event, he needed a lot of guts to hold off the stampede behind him. Hall came out smoking out of the gate and quickly extended his lead to 5 shots. What followed was an amazing serious of lead changes brought on by Liu as he cut Hall’s lead down to one shot at the turn. The back 9 par 5’s were the deciding factor for Hall’s victory as he birdied both. Liu however remained relentless with enough pressure to push Hall all the way to the finish. On # 18, Hall (a lefty) pulled his drive into the trees down the right side to create an exciting finish. With pure guts, he proceeded to bomb a 9 iron over the trees to the front edge of the green from 180 yards. He then only needed three more little swings to nail down the coveted trophy. The victory also gave Gavin Hall an exemption to the upcoming Nationwide Tour event at Dye’s Valley Course. What a birthday present! Hey pros…..Gavin shot 64 there….watch out! thinking of golf

Bigger Is Not Better

By Ed Gilbert, Head Thinker ed@absolutethinking.us

(Not in Golf Anyway!)

G

olf equipment marketing is big business for the manufacturers and for the PGA and LPGA professional golfers. Endorsements can be huge for the winning PGA/LPGA tour player. Hundreds of thousands of dollars just to wear a logo, use a putter, driver, wedge and irons. Check out the bags on television (not the elderly women) but the big bag carried by the caddie. No offense to older women. That is my current circle of influence. Just don’t want to confuse my readers who are easily swayed by youth, looks and tattoos. After doing a great deal of research, I found there is no good resource but patchwork all over the Internet for what pros play with what equipment. Few are loyal to one company. They may use Titleist Pro-V1 balls and a Taylormade R-11 driver and someone else’s irons. Money talks and the proverbial bull shit can’t get a VIP pass to an event. The bigger the marketing budget, the more impressions. The more impressions, the more potential sales. Unless you are astute. Porsche automobiles have a small advertising budget but people who can afford a Porsche know it is not about advertising. It’s about the quality of the product. From what I have found Taylormade has 76 players under endorsement contracts, Titleist – 30, Callaway – 21, Cleveland – 14, Scotty Cameron (Acushnet) – 38 and Mizuno a handful. Their best known was Nick Faldo. (Not too shabby). Since it is more apparent today that golf manufacturers have price fixed for the most part (Where is Sherman

when you need him?), the difference is in how you hit them and how you were motivated by one company’s marketing message over another. Since I am an equipment junkie and have owned 90% of all drivers made, I can give an educated opinion as an 11 handicapper who at one time was a 6 when I had an outer body experience for 45 days. Now

club in 1936 (Star-Line), Grand Monarch clubs in 1968, their first titanium club in 1990 and the highly successful JPX line began in 2005. Today for the player looking to improve their game, look at the JPX800. A great forgiving forged club. I play golf with the same 16 guys I have been playing with for over 15 years. I am the worst golfer at an 11 handicap. The best players all play Mizuno irons. There is an on-going debate about forged versus cast that could go on forever but here is what I know: If you want to get better and want a club you can feel, then the Mizuno JPX 800 forged iron is for you. Very forgiving. Most of the forged irons by Mizuno are made for lowhandicap players. However, these are a huge exception. This is a great forged iron for a large target audience. They are very forgiving and long. This new hot metal construction is a brand new process of making this club head. The club head is stronger and the impact on ball speed is worthy. 3 MPH faster and 7 yards longer on average. Pocket cavity on the other side extends the sweet spot and brings center of gravity deeper. This club is a great choice for players who want to try forged irons and still desire forgiveness. While the top 25 players don’t endorse them, does it really matter if it helps your game? PGA Tour pros could hit a $10 knock off club a long way. Their clubs are not made to the same specs we buy. So who cares? If you want one of the finest irons on the market today and be perceived as a Porsche kind of guy, buy this iron.

The bigger the marketing budget, the more impressions. The more impressions, the more potential sales.

Unless you are astute.

only a fond memory. The Taylormade R-11 driver in my opinion is the longest hitting driver on the market. The most used driver on the PGA Tour. But does that mean their new R-11 irons are equally as good? Maybe not. But branding of the R-11 driver will certainly help its iron sales. Probably one of the smallest qolf equipment advertising budgets today is from Mizuno. This is the Porsche of golf equipment. This company is 105 years old as it began in 1906. They made their first golf

there whenever I can. Why do guests return to The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club year after year? Some say it’s their tradition of family hospitality, which dates back to 1946. Of course, it also could be the championship golf course, world-class spa, excellent meeting facilities, award-winning beachfront dining or 7 miles of white-sand beach. If this was a quiz, the answer to “why I return” is all of the above. Another reason for me is the beautiful sunsets viewed from the iconic Sunset Beach Bar 36

storage and never have to worry about them again. The course was redesigned a few years ago by noted architect Ron Garl and will provide all the challenge and fun you could want from a test of golf. I get to play the course twice during our annual visits and it’s a wildlife wonderland to enjoy in the heart of the city. There are both birdies to be made and watched while playing the course.

Relax on the beautiful Gulf shore

Last year we viewed two bald eagles on #7, who displayed their fishing prowess by always enjoying a meal when we passed by. But my favorite exotic sightings are the Rose-cheeked parakeets. These bright chartreuse-green, parrot-sized birds can be seen around the course, but most often around the 15th and 16th holes. Come on down and like me get hooked on the hospitality, convenience and natural beauty of this historic beach hotel complex. Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 5

Tom Lehman, JJ Qualkenbush, and Kevin Streelman

The Miracle of Mentorship The dictionary defines mentor as an experienced adviser and supporter, usually older and more experienced, who advises and guides a younger, less experienced person. JJ Qualkenbush is a fortunate person, having experienced mentoring on three levels. First is the people who have mentored him, second are those he mentors, and third is his encouraging others to be a part of this very worthwhile endeavor. JJ’s most influential mentors are his parents. “They keep me motivated and always remind me that the goal is to have fun and never give up on my dreams,” says JJ. In addition, he says, “They support me and my golf dream financially, as well as always opening up new doors for my future. My father, in particular, is always talking to people and introducing me to them, which 38

has led to many wonderful things. My current golf coach, Joe Simonds, is a mentor who tells me that I have the ability to conquer the impossible. He has faith in me and in my potential and there are some tournaments when he caddies for me. His simple and important advice includes, ‘JJ, just relax and see it.’ ‘Fairway, green and two putts’ sets my mind at ease.” “The famous golf coach Hank Haney gave me goose-bumps just being around him. When he said ‘you have the work ethic of no other,’ it made me feel special. And being featured with Hank Haney on the cover of Florida Golf Central Magazine meant the world to me.” JJ is one of only three students out of the three thousand in his high school that are in a special co-enrolled program. This program Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 5

enables JJ to take four classes at school and two home-schooled classes so that he can be dismissed at noon. There is no question that when he leaves, he goes straight to the golf course, where he plays 18 holes and practices for an hour and a half every day. JJ also benefits from a less-likely group of mentors. “Many of my friends are growing up in a lower-economic area and tell me to cherish my talent. They frequently call me after tournaments asking how I did, and it makes me feel warm inside knowing that they care.” At Disney’s Children’s Miracle Network, JJ met another mentor, Tom Lehman, who mentors many people around the country. “I asked Tom several

important of all, he told me about his past and the steps he took which led to his success. I am happy, proud, and very fortunate that what he described are the same steps that I have been taking.” PEOPLE WHO JJ MENTORS It is uncommon for a 15-year-old to be a mentor. JJ’s past experience with his variety of advisers has given him an understanding of leadership and mentorship well beyond his years. As a result, there are individuals in JJ’s school who ask him for advice. JJ says: “I encourage my peers to pursue a dream. More specifically, to get involved in a sport, this will lead to exercise, companionship, and fun. I personally think watching TV or being on the computer for long periods of time is unhealthy, and my advice is always to get involved and pursue a dream. Giving advice also benefits me because it reinforces my beliefs and reminds me of the road that will lead to fulfilling my dreams.” One person who JJ has mentored is Matt Coonan, who has been diagnosed

with autism. Matt is 24 years old and caddied for JJ at the Children’s Miracle Network tournament at Disney in 2010. “I noticed that few people were talking to or paying attention to Matt, and when he joined me at the special awards dinner, he had a great experience. In addition to the entertainment, food and fun, I presented him a trophy that said ‘Best Caddy in the World.’ Seeing his smiling face was the most memorable moment of that week. Asian Influence

O

ne of the most dramatic golf courses to emerge in many years, Whistling Rock Country Club, has opened in Chuncheon, 50 minutes east of Seoul. The club showcases 27 holes of world-class golf by renowned international golf architect Ted Robinson, Jr. The routing at Whistling Rock follows strategic elevation changes in mountain hillsides. Respecting the natural elements of the diverse landforms, Robinson has integrated 15 lakes into this design. These lakes are connected by numerous streams and

several cascading waterfalls that not only enhance shot values, but define Whistling Rock’s striking aesthetics. A creative combination of choices and challenges, Whistling Rock is a genuine golf adventure that poses enticing risk/reward scenarios throughout each nine for players at all ability levels. “If you are playing the golf course from the back tees, it has every challenge you can possibly think of,” Robinson says. “It will test your skills. But it is also straightforward, with sets of tees for every player to have an opportunity to succeed on a golf course that is fun to play.” An upscale, private country club, Whistling Rock has three nine-hole loops, each possessing its own distinctive traits, maintaining a strategic and artistic rhythm regardless of the order in which they are played. The loops are named Cocoon, Temple and Cloud for the three signature tea houses that grace the golf course. Each nine plays to par 36, with complementing yardages – Cocoon measuring a maximum of 3,571 yards, with Temple at 3,654 and Cloud at 3,646. Integral to the design is Robinson’s capacity to vary the degree of challenge from hole to hole. On the Cocoon nine, the demanding, uphill third hole (474 yards, par 4) is followed by a sharp dogleg (359 yards, par 4), where the green is reach-

able from the tee with a bold carry across bedrock-lined water. And while the green at the par-3 eighth hole is nearly encircled by sand, the fairway on the par-4 ninth is wide open. On the Temple nine, the par-3 8th requires maximum distance (256 yards) and accuracy, but the 9th is a 376-yard par 4 that rewards a safe, short play off the tee. The 9th features one of the most identifiable points on the golf course – a suspension bridge that connects the fairway and green, stretching across a natural bedrock canyon high above the water below. The Cloud nine revolves around a five-hole stretch called “The Glen,” a segment that represents so much of what makes Whistling Rock special: steep rock faces, elevated tees, cascading waterfalls, lakeside greens and dense forest throughout. Whistling Rock has been developed by Donglim Resort Development Co., LTD., a subsidiary of Taekwang Group, a leading South Korean conglomerate with holdings in textiles, chemical, industry, cable television and financial services (insurance). A spectacular clubhouse, designed by Francine Houben of Macanoo Architects (Delft, The Netherlands) is the anchor of club and has been inspired by beautiful mountain scenery. The building sits at the junction between the existing mountain ridge and the cultivated landscape of the golf course.

Clubhouse 42

Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 5

Formally in contrast with its lush, undulating surroundings, the rectilinear clubhouse appears as a beacon from across the golf course. The building concept consists of two strong Travertine stone slabs floating above the surrounding landscape. Internal and external patios cross the stone slabs to create a diversity of outdoor spaces and art gardens. he tea houses at Whistling Rock created as sculptural objects that vary from one another and serving as visual icons within the landscape, offer players a unique moment of relaxation during the round. Each tea house takes its cue from the natural surroundings and carries the theme of each nine. Landscape architects Ken Alperstein and David Fisher of Pinnacle Design (Palm Desert, California) worked closely with Robinson, Houben and other consultants to create a customized plant palette and oversee construction details to meet the project’s specific requirements. Pinnacle artfully blended the natural surroundings of the project site with the shaping of the golf course and positioning of the clubhouse. The planting of thousands of native

Hole #14 trees, including, Japanese Red Pine, Korean Pine, native dogwood, oak and cherry, has reinvigorated the property. These species – mostly transplants from original growth on site – were grouped and placed in groves to maximize their influence on the natural appearance of the golf course. The mountainous resort area of Chuncheon sits in a basin flanked

by lakes and rivers. The town and its environs, a popular vacation and festival destination, is surrounded by Lake Uiam to the west, Chuncheon Lake to the north and, further east, massive Soyang Lake. Membership to the country club is by invitation only. For additional information, visit the Web site at www.whistlingrockresort.com.

Why do cigars cost so *&#! much? I’m often asked “why do a bunch of rolled up leafs costs so dang much”? It’s a complex situation, but the two main factors are time and tax. As the old saw goes, time is money. That bunch of leafs your smoking is at least 18 months old and probably more like 3 years old. From seed to harvest takes around five months. Another six weeks in a curing barn to dry the leaves out and then two months to ferment. The leaves then go into the aging room for at least 30 days, some for many years. All the while each tobacco leaf is handled hundreds of times by various employees. While labor is cheap in many cigar producing countries, it’s not free. All those hands add up. Sitting on tobacco leaves for years generates no income for the company. It’s only when they are rolled and shipped

Duffer Dan at

H

ow many times have you read a golf course article where the writer has called it ‘a diamond in the rough’. Even I with all my extraordinary eloquence have slipped into using the phrase. I went prospecting and found a little rough in a diamondBlack Diamond that is. The only rough to speak of is that which borders the lush manicured fairways of 45 flawless Tom Fazio designed holes known as the Quarry, Ranch and Highlands courses in a perfect setting in Lecanto, Florida, just over an hour north of Tampa in the rolling hillsides of Citrus County . This sparkling gem is going to be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012 and what better way to do so than under the new ownership of Escalante Golf. The 1320 acres of beautiful rolling terrain with a master planned private gated community provide a perfect home for folks looking for an enchanting and exhilarating golf experience. As you drive into the entrance to Black Diamond, and look to your right, you can catch a glimpse of why the original owners, Betty and Stan Olson, decided to purchase the ranchland and make it their home along with 500 other families The magnificent limestone quarry plays an integral part of one of Tom Fazio’s greatest designs, which has garnered Golfweek’s ‘Best Residential Golf Courses’ and Golf Digest’s ‘America’s 100 Greatest Courses’. I had the opportunity to visit Black Diamond recently and experience for myself the remarkable beauty and

50

challenging courses of this many faceted property. We played the 7000 yard Ranch first which is reminiscent of Pine Valley, requiring accurate play and deft putting on multi-tiered greens while enjoying elevation changes in excess of 100 feet. I must say the Members prefer this layout to the Quarry, plus the 3500 yard Highlands nine with its spectacular views can be incorporated into the Ranch to give you a different 18 depending on how you route them. I played the Ranch much better than I did the Quarry but to tell the truth, I was awestruck by both and loved my rounds equally. Fazio really outdid himself and we are the lucky recipients of courses who after 20 years are still considered the best in Florida, and that’s a lot of new ones to contend with. Escalante brought in a new management team to get the brilliance back to the Diamond. Bryan Richard moved from Waterlefe Golf & River Club in Bradenton, also an Escalante facility, to take over as the Head Professional and Andrea Knox left Burnt Store Marina to become Director of Golf, assuring members, guests and visitors the finest experience. The practice facilities are first rate as well. The huge driving range is complimented by a massive chipping green, 2 large putting greens and 4 more areas to polish short games. Diamond Dunes is a four hole practice course for family outings or a warm up before you attempt the real thing. The 28,000 square foot stone accented clubhouse is great for parties, weddings

and romantic dinners, and designed with a Scottish accent like many of the finer clubs in New England. The Quarry plays somewhat similar in the beginning to the Ranch, with its great flowing contours, elevations, natural sand expanses, glistening white bunkers and tiered greens. Then you pull up to #13, a 180 yard, par 3 that begins your journey. The tee shot must clear the crevasse leading into the depths of the quarry. The next hole is a 5 par along the south rim where safe play will lead to, if you’re lucky, a par. Don’t be a Duffer and try to skim the cliffs to get near the green, or ‘goodbye little ball’ never to be found. The next view is a Kodak moment standing on the tee box of #15 looking down to the fairway on the floor of the quarry with Lake Diamond glistening in the sunlight, reflecting the exposed limestone walls. It has got be one of most picturesque holes I have ever witnessed. Then climb your way out of the basin to the north rim and play a dogleg left par 4 that once again calls for smart shots or ‘bye bye’ ball. Battling to win on the course, and against Cancer: Golfer & family hold fundraising event to fight against Melanoma

L

ocal Mini-Tour golf professional, David Henry, is focused on acing the holes for more than to better his scorecard. In 2008, the young, promising golfer was accepted to the Professional Golfer’s Career College in Winter Garden, FL. This was a truly thrilling time for David & his supportive parents, Bill & Chris Henry, who were eager to see their son follow his dream and talent. As David made plans to move to Florida from their home in Iowa, the family was dealt a devastating blow. Chris Henry, David’s mother, was diagnosed with Stage IV Malignant Melanoma. The prognosis was not good. David told his parents adamantly that he would stay in Iowa, as he wanted desperately to be close to his mother as she fought for her life. Chris would have none of it! The family, including Chris’s mother (and David’s Grandmother) Anita, decided that they would all leave their hometown behind, and move to Florida so that they would all be together as David pursued his dreams, and Chris continued her fight against the devastating disease. Once they settled in Florida, Chris found new doctors and began treatments. David graduated from the PGCC in 2010 and began his professional golf career. David helped to support his mother as she went through difficult cancer treatments, and Chris & Bill were cheering David on from the side lines as he played. David had decided to dedicate his career to his mother, and those like her, fighting for their lives against Melanoma. He became not only a passionate spokesperson for the disease, but also pledged to donate a portion of his winnings & sponsorships on the course to the Melanoma Research Foundation. Sadly, since December of 2010, the family has lost three close friends to the battle against Melanoma; Jennifer Thomas, Brian Perry and Tina Miller. David now has all of their initials, along with his Mother’s, embroidered on his golf bag as an everyday reminder to the cause, and the people, he is playing for. Despite their circumstances, things seemed to be going fairly well for the family, but that was about to end as the summer of 2011 approached. Chris was started on a recently FDA approved 58

David Henry and his mom, Chris Henry Melanoma treatment known as Ipilimumab, or IPI. Although promising, this immune-based therapy proved to be very costly to Chris’ body and to the family’s financial situation. As Chris struggled to endure the therapy, the family struggled to meet the growing medical bills. Although the treatment did prove to have some positive results, there was some shrinkage and stabilization of the cancer, ultimately Chris’ already weakened system was simply not able to withstand the harsh effects. She and her family made the tough decision to stop the IPI treatment to give her body a much needed rest, and to let her immune system begin to recover. Meanwhile, the cancer continues to cause her a great deal of pain and discomfort, particularly in her brain and lungs. In the same time period, David, following his own advice in advocating for regular skin check-ups, especially for those who spend a lot of time in the sun (like golfers) and for those with a predisposition (Melanoma is hereditary), had himself checked. He was in fact,

diagnosed with Melanoma. Thankfully, because of the screening, his was caught early. After having over 20 moles biopsied (and more to come), and 4 surgeries over the summer of 2011 to remove the malignancies found, David is now on his own journey to fight the disease. There is hope on the horizon for both Mom & Son. David’s prognosis is good, and he will soon be hitting the links again to join a mini tour. For Chris, there are additional treatment options, which the family hopes she will be able to start soon. Like most treatments for this disease, her options come with a large price tag and huge co-pay for her and her husband, Bill. Help support the Henry family and their fight against Melanoma, they are “Fighting 2gether, Family 4ever”. To learn more about David Henry, and his mission to bring awareness to, and raise money for Melanoma research, please visit www.playingforacure.biz. Blake Holcomb opened with a leading score of 3 under par 67 followed by professional Clint Avret and amateur Patrick Lamb at 2 under, while 5 more players finished at one under. With greens as good as it gets, putts rolled in all day and the scores showed it. But the party was about to end . Day 2 was held on the much longer Ocean Course. Undulating greens were giving players fits, rough was punishing, and the ocean winds wreaked havoc with all players. Scores soared throughout the field as it was a day of survival. Swing Pure. Putt Pure. Practice Pure.

Proper Setup

Proper Swing

Path

If you want the perfect golf swing, training is essential. When it comes to the best advice for golf training, practice makes perfect. And the right golf training aid can help make your dream into reality. Wouldn’t you like to hit short irons into more greens? Sure! Wouldn’t we all? But that would mean you need to have more distance off the tee as well as better accuracy. Most golf swing training devices take you through the correct golf swing mechanics to help you repeat a golf swing that will hopefully hold up for 18 holes. And with the onslaught of training aids hitting the market each year, it is easy to open up your wallet in hopes of a better swing. But not all swing trainers are created equal. Dominus Golf is a developer and marketer of golf performance and skill development training products for serious golfers of all ages. They are proud to introduce their flagship product, the Tour Pure Pro, which gives golfers

• More distance and control • Better rhythm and tempo • Accuracy and consistency The Tour Pure Pro Swing Trainer has been created especially for low-to-mid handicap golfers and faster swing speeds (over 100 mph with driver). Unlike a traditional golf club, the Tour Pure Pro counter balanced, weighted swing plane indicator allows you to work out with a heavier golf trainer for maximum impact while maintaining proper form. This will increase strength and flexibility in the golf specific muscles. It will 68

Tour Pure Pro Helps Create Position

add distance to your drives, greater control to your approach shots, and more confidence in your putting stroke. Tour Pure Pro makes your swing powerful and consistent. It gives you a clear visual understanding of where the club needs to be swung as it approaches the most critical point of the swing-the impact zone. To hit solid, accurate shots, the club face must be square or squaring at impact and the club must be approaching the ball on the proper plane. Tour Pure Pro’s unique center shafted, weight balanced design provides immediate feedback (both positive and negative) on whether you are heading toward the proper swing path. By making Tour Pure Pro a part of your training regimen and warm up, you will experience a more powerful swing. Translated to something you desire: those long par 4’s will seem like child’s play!

Three Tour Pure Pro Design Fundamentals Tour Pure Pro Helps Create Space Poor positioning at the top is often a set up for a weak down swing. As you swing to the top, Tour Pure Pro helps maintain space correctly. It moves the top of your spine away from the ball to ensure

Tour Pure Pro helps you to never be too far inside or too far outside. The Tour Pure Pro puts you in check the moment you grip this innovated swing trainer. It helps to move your shoulders and the club around your body, simultaneously creating a perfect downswing by hinging the wrists and turning through the striking zone.

Tour Pure Pro Helps You Putt Better Most golfers have a tendency to not align themselves to the cup properly. That results in a push or pull of the the putt. To be consistent, proper alignment is key to the correct starting line. Tour Pure Pro is not only a swing trainer, it’s a putting aid. To get started on the target line, simply lay down the Tour Pure Pro, align yourself and practice from different distances and speeds. Best of all, you will see if you’re correctly lined up to the cup. Jeff Ritter, one of the world’s most prominent golf instructor says, “I’ve come across a lot of training aids and to be honest, many don’t quite make the cut. Every now and then, however, I’m introduced to a product that immediately shows its value helping golfers better feel the proper movements of the golf swing. The Tour Pure Swing Trainer by Dominus Golf does just that and a little bit more.” For more information or to order, please visit www.dominusgolf.com. Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 5
