A Caddy
Christmas We all know
that Christmas (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Festivus) is a time for the joy of giving and sharing memories with loved ones. I was thinking, a great gift to share with our non-golfing friends and family is a FUN introduction game (emphasis on fun), where you are the caddy. I’m not sayin’ you act catty like some of the stuffed stockings out there and you may drive a Caddy to the course, but that’s a whole different deal. What I’m thinking is you gift yourself for four hours by giving a certificate that states you are taking them to show them a good time. Maybe a photo of you with a trap rake to put in their stocking. Just think, when they get hooked, it will be the story they tell about how they started their love for the game for years after. Depending on their age, of course, I suggest a nice bottle of high octane fuel to get you and your guest in the comfort zone. A little Loosey Christmas Goosy, if you will. For the little linksters you should probably have two bottles on hand for just yourself. It’s all about making golf more fun. You don’t have to actually pick up their bag, but instead help with the rules and the etiquette…ball mark, and divot repair, helping find their balls, and yardage, or just helping them with their grip; maybe a couple of pointers that a pro will teach them, eventually. Make sure that they know some trending golf terms and more importantly, that you don’t hold up the group behind you, EVER! Along the way you can share some fun outings you have had. When you introduce someone to our game it has a way of humbling you, recognizing your own faults in golf and in life. Some people say that they play better, or focus more when they are alone on the course, because they are not distracted. That’s when I usually get all my birdies and of course, hole- in- ones. We should all be motivated to show more grace in our lives and host more. Just be good ‘ol down-home company on the golf course, or anywhere, for that matter. An amazing miracle happens when humans share themselves (you know what I mean…. minds out of the gutter) it makes others want to share their time also. In this issue (as always) we take great pride in featuring all the many charitable golf events hosted here in Florida and pay respect to those who gift themselves to help others. In more than a decade of publishing, you can witness in our humble little mag, some great coverage on tournaments that benefit our military, and the many foundations that help the needs of others.
Have yourselves a Merry little Christmas. Let your hearts be light, From now on our troubles will be out of sight. Faithful friends who are dear to us, Gather near to us once more, Through the years we will all be together, if the fates allow, “Have yourselves, a Merry little Christmas now!”

The Renaissance World Golf Village Resort and Convention Center Completes Major Renovation & ExpansionOf Its Outdoor Meeting & Event Space
Fifth Annual Patriot Golf Day Donations on Record-Setting Pace for Families of Wounded/Fallen Military Veterans OWASSO, Okla. – In honor of Veterans Day this week, the Folds of Honor Foundation is proud to announce its preliminary fundraising numbers from Patriot Golf Day. Through the support of PGA Professionals and United States Golf Association
JACKSONVILLE/ST. AUGUSTINE, FL– The Renaissance World Golf Village Resort and Convention Center in Jacksonville/St. Augustine, Florida has completed a dramatic renovation and expansion of its outdoor meeting, event and recreational space. The large project included new and expanded outdoor function space with beautiful brick pavers and elegant new furniture in conversational groupings; a beautiful new fountain called La Piazza; a picturesque new gazebo; and a new and expanded pool deck with new seating areas. The new outdoor function space, now named La Terrazza, is able to accommodate groups of up to 2,000 guests. La Terrazza features advanced technology
and power capability, comparable to that provided in indoor ballrooms. This includes underground cables and wiring for communication and internet to the stage location, and to the gazebo, as well as underground connection points for two different size tent configurations (40’ x 50’ and 40’ x 60’), according to Jeffrey Oliasami, general manager of the 301-room Northeast Florida resort. With this expansion the resort added 15,000 square feet of new function space, bringing the resort’s offerings to 101,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Together with the adjacent World Golf Hall of Fame, the AAA Four-Diamond resort is the largest combination hotel and convention center between Atlanta and Orlando . For information on The Renaissance World Golf Village Resort and Convention Center, call 888-740-7020 or 904-940-8000, or visit www.WorldGolfRenaissance.com .
(USGA) Members, Patriot Golf Day events have already raised a record amount of more than $3.2 million (as of Nov. 4) to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation, bringing the five-year total to more than $12 million. Held over Labor Day Weekend, the Fifth Annual Patriot Golf Day gave golfers an opportunity to honor our American heroes and their families by making donations at participating golf facilities nationwide. The inaugural Patriot Golf Day was held Sept. 1, 2007, and resulted in donations of more than $1.1 million. In 2010, Patriot Golf Day donations totaled $3.2 million and this year’s donations have already exceeded that total with facilities continuing to report and host fundraising events throughout the end of the year.
Patriot Golf Day, jointly supported by The PGA of America and the USGA, is the primary fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation. More than 2,200 educational scholarships have been awarded by Folds of Honor since its inception in 2007. As of August 1, 2011, 250,000 dependents have been affected by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Of these, 87 percent do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. Individuals interested in contributing to the Folds of Honor, and those applying for scholarships should go to FoldsofHonor.org.

PURE GOLF Black Bear Golf Club is a quintessential P.B. Dye designed championship links course stretching over 7,000 yards. It is truly a fun test for golfers of all skill levels. Unlike most typically flat Florida courses Black Bear presents a unique challenge with its undulating fairways, elevation changes and fast, well manicured greens. The course has some of the most dramatic bunkers you will ever experience in Florida as well as some of the biggest elevation changes. P.B. Dye lived up to his reputation as a designer of championship courses when he built Black Bear. The focus at Black Bear is pure golf and after over a year of intensive investment the course is in outstanding condition. The club boasts one of the best practice facilities in Central Florida. With a double ended 400 yard range, 40,000 square foot short game complex, 16,000 square foot practice green and 19th hole - shoot out hole, Black Bear is the place to be if you want to improve your game. Black Bear hosts several professional tour events annually as well as being home to select PGA and LPGA players. Play a tournament quality championship course for $50 or less and rub shoulders with a few LPGA or PGA pros. That’s nearly impossible anywhere else in the Orlando area. Black Bear Golf Course is about a 30 minute drive north of downtown Orlando. The course is set in Florida ranch country. The drive from the city is easy and relaxing. It is more than worth the few extra minutes drive both for the golf experience as well as the great value offered.

would love to compete on the PGA tour but unfortunately I have 2 major handicaps…. Woods and irons.
Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Poolside barbecue, traveling, spend-
ing time with family, wakeboarding, snow skiing, tennis, and just about any other type of athletic activity that you could think of.
Who do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? Mama Dux for sure. Also known as
“Duxy”. I simply couldn’t survive without her. She is the ultimate role model and hands down the most amazing woman that I have ever met. Love ya Duxy.

What’s your take on cuddling? I love to cuddle/ snuggle and I’m not afraid to admit it!
Tell us about your first kiss? Subpar at best. My torpedo tongue must have been less than attractive. Sorry about that Angela!
Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. As a child, I had a cyst on the back of my brain. I was in and out of the hospital for the first 10 years of my life while they ran several tests.
What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? A king sized bed, unlimited supply of cold beer, a fertile female companion who is easy on the eyes.
Who would you like to have with you on the island?
My brother, his fiancé, and the winner from the latest season of survivor to help ensure we stay alive as long as possible.
What do you find is the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? An unbelievably slow foursome that does not let the 2some behind them play through.
Name the 3 most important things to you in this world. My family, my friends, and the memories of late night war stories that I have from my grandpa Joe Cook who has passed.
What three people would you most like to play with in your golf fantasy foursome? Tiger Woods, My pops, and Jesus who I would politely ask to bless my clubs before the start of the round.
Favorite Comedian? Robin Williams. If you have never heard him talk about golf, go to this link and get ready to laugh your tail off. www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_urC_HVce4 12

cart header girl Where did you grow up? I was born in Milford, Conn and moved to Jacksonville, Fl when I was 8 years old. So I grew up remembering both.
Do you enjoy playing golf? Are they’re any golfers in your family? I do enjoy playing golf even though I am not very good at all. My dad on the other hand is an awesome golfer. He thinks that I have potential, but I think he is just being nice.
What do you feel makes this club special? The attention and love put into every aspect, both on course and in the clubhouse. The team of individuals that make up the staff are all remarkable and truly make TPC Sawgrass unique and like no other.
What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? Meeting all the different people from all

around the world that come here just to play the Stadium and Dye’s Valley Courses. It’s an awesome feeling being a part of someone’s experience at TPC Sawgrass and helping to make a memory that will last forever! The only bummer about being a cart girl is the four months of cold weather.
If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? If I wasn’t a cart girl I would be studying abroad and traveling a lot!
What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl? When I met Tim Tebow. As a football fan it was really cool to meet such a talented professional.
Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? How you prefer dress if you were given a choice? I absolutely love our dresses! They are stylish and comfy. I don’t mind the black at all, I think its slimming and looks great on all the girls.
What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? When a golfer made a birdie on hole 17 and his brother picked him up and pretended to throw him off the island green. I thought he was going to cry and it was absolutely hysterical. 14
What hobbies do you enjoy? I love gardening. Starting my veggies from seedlings and watching them grow is by far the coolest thing and rewarding!
What is your idea of “the perfect date”? Doing something active and competitive, like paint balling or kayaking. Then maybe going out to a nice romantic Lobster Dinner.
Favorite comedian? Seth Green, creator of “Family Guy” Favorite charity to support? Habitat for Humanity What else would you like for us to know about you? I am absolutely a believer that everything happens for a reason, which is why I feel so blessed to be a member of TPC Sawgrass Family!

Brad Breuer Knows The “Secret Of Golf” What is the “Secret of Golf?” Is it discovering the swing that leads to hitting long straight shots? Is it finding the key to consistently shooting low scores? Perhaps the secret is being admired by your golfing friends and foes for your mental toughness and golf course strategy. Brad Breuer, an investment consultant for over 30 years and now with his own practice in Winter Park (Breuer Investment Consultants, Inc. associated with Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network, LLC) exudes more enthusiasm for great friends Brad Breuer and Arnold Palmer than great shots. “There match, where to have realistic expectations.” is no question we switch part Arnold Palmer has been an icon that my favorite ners every six to Brad since the 1950’s and Brad aspect of golf holes, friendly was about eighteen years behind Mr. is the fellowcompetition. Larry The Cable Guy Gits -R-Done for the Arnold Palmer Hospital and The International Hip Dysplasia Institute Recently in Orlando, Larry the Cable Guy and his celebrity friends got together for a round of golf at Grand Cypress Golf Club to raise money for The Arnold Palmer Hospital and The International Hip Dysplasia Institute. This year’s field included Comedians Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White, PGA’s Boo Weekley and Lee Janzen, MLB’s Johnny Damon, Davey Johnson, and Todd Haney and NBA’s Bo Outlaw and Nick Anderson. The event is near and dear for Larry the Cable Guy. His son, Wyatt, was born with hip dysplasia and after countless sleepless nights worrying, he and his wife were directed to The Arnold Palmer Hospital. Wyatt was fit into a harness that corrected his hip dysplasia and is now a happy little boy that runs and plays just like all the other kids. This experience led to Larry’s charity, The Git-R-Done Foundation to donate $5,000,000 to The Arnold Palmer Hospital to establish The International Hip Dysplasia Institute. The goal of the IHDI is to bring awareness to hip dysplasia and research
for a universal cure for the condition. “As a parent, it was so difficult for my wife and I. There just weren’t any answers out there. We were so blessed to find the wonderful doctors at The Arnold Palmer Hospital and we are excited about the work of The International Hip Dysplasia Institute”, stated Larry the Cable Guy. In its second year, The Git-R-Done Golf Classic includes a pairings party and a live and silent auction. One of the highlights of the event was the personal story of Peter
Belmore. Peter attended the event last year and it was his first exposure to hip dysplasia. Just a month later, his daughter was born with the condition. Armed with the knowledge he had learned, he reached out to The Arnold Palmer Hospital and his daughter’s hip dysplasia has been corrected! Many wonderful companies joined the tournament this year including Cabela’s, Waste Management, Otto Environmental Systems North America Inc., Riot Creative Imaging and Sletten Construction.
About the Git R Done Foundation: The Git-R-Done Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created by Larry the Cable Guy and his wife, Cara, as a focal point for the family’s philanthropy in 2009. The foundation’s mission is to provide assistance to organizations that have experienced hardships beyond their control. The Git-R-Done Foundation has made numerous donations, including donations to the Arnold Palmer Foundation for the treatment and cure of hip dysplasia and the Children’s Advocacy Center. Special Olympics Golf Means More than Medals Medal ceremonies brought an exciting three rounds of competition to a close at PGA Golf Club, but Special Olympics golfers shared a common story of how golf has meant more than awards to their lives. A field of 177 golfers from 21 U.S. Special Olympics programs, plus programs from Bermuda and Canada, competed in five levels of competition in the 12th annual national tournament at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Special Olympics golfer Tyler Whitehurst, age 20, of Palm Harbor, Fla., shot the Level 5 ~ 18-Hole Individual Stroke Play low score of 84-91-80—255 for the gold medal in the men’s top division. Tyler, who is autistic, was accompanied by his stepmother, Amy Whitehurst. “When Tyler started playing golf, he only had endurance for about four holes,” said Amy. “When we signed him up for Special Olympics, he had to learn and build up the stamina to play 9 holes. And he did that in three months time – that’s how driven and focused he was. He

won at Regional’s and went on to States (in golf) and he won the silver medal. When he came down off the podium and looked at Jim (his dad), he said ‘I’m so proud of myself, I could cry.’ What’s so amazing about that is that he’d never had an opportunity to set a goal, and get that sense of self and feeling of pride to reach it. Special Olympics has given that to him and from that moment forward, it changed his life. He went from playing 9 to 18 holes. The manners he’s learned through golf, the etiquette, having a great attitude and being positive…all of it, Special Olympics totally change his life.” Tyler said, “It feels awesome because, at my first state championship, I won a silver medal and this is my first national tournament and I won gold – it’s totally different – a whole new level of competition and accomplishment for me. I just want to keep getting better.” Grace Ann Braxton, age 39, of Fredericksburg, Va., held onto her Level 5 ~ 18-Hole Individual Stroke Play lead in the top women’s division with an 83-9294—269 for the gold medal. In Level 4 ~ 9-Hole Individual Stroke Play, Danny Peaslee, age 15, from Souris, Manitoba, Canada, led all three rounds with 41-4246—129 and the gold medal win for the top Level 4 division. Nicholas Urban, age 23, from White Bear Lake, Minn., shot 44-46-42—132 for the Level 4 silver medal. In Level 3 ~ 18-Hole Unified Sports Team Play, Scott Rohrer (athlete) and his father, Jeff (partner), led all three rounds with an 80-7879—237 for the gold medal. when he shot the 18-hole and 54-hole record of 71-75-75—221 in Level 5 ~ 18-hole Individual Stroke Play event. Special Olympics golfer Scott Rohrer also is autistic and had fun playing in the Unified Team Play with his dad, Jeff. “He’s always played with me,” said his dad, Jeff. “He started when he was seven. Soon after we found out he had Autism. We got him playing and it’s something he really excelled at because it’s an individual sport. He’s never had a swing lesson; he has the same swing now he’s always had. I just love watching him hit good shots. He’s the better golfer of the two of us, he has the lower handicap. A couple weeks ago we played at Myrtle Beach and he shot a 75 from the back tees at Myrtle Wood, I shot an 86. “Golf is something he’s really keyed in to; he’s totally focused when he’s out here, you don’t even notice he’s autistic. It’s really helped him to relate to others where we play at home. The

other guys have so much respect for him and his game – he’s accepted. Special Olympics and golf have really helped him to excel. I know he’s proud of what he’s able to do. It’s definitely given him an avenue to succeed.”

Low Country Hi-Lites I took a trip to check out the golf destinations in the beautiful Low Country of South Carolina recently. Just north of the Georgia/SC border traveling along Interstate 95 you can take numerous side trips to the many barrier islands that once were the great flourishing plantations of the Confederacy before the War between The States. Traveling north, Hilton Head Island was my first stop, just 45 minutes from Savannah with a multitude of great golf courses and places to stay. The premier destination on the Island is the Sea Pines Resort, a 5,000 acre retreat bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Calibogue Sound and home of the RBC Heritage Classic on Harbour Town Golf Links, a Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus design, considered one of the top 20 courses in the country. Arnold Palmer won the inaugural tournament over 40 years ago, and Brandt Snedeker was the 2011 winner and will defend his title April 5-8th, the week after the Masters. Pete returned once again this year to tweak the championship layout to chal-
lenge the precision of the PGA Tour players. There are three outstanding courses at the Resort and the other two play out of The Plantation Club. The first course built on Hilton Head is the Ocean course, which was redesigned by Jacksonville, Florida’s Mark McCumber, and embraces the true coastal golf experience with panoramic views of the ocean, numerous lagoons and deep bunkers playing to 6900 yards with 4 sets of tees. Pete Dye completed a multi-million dollar reconstruction of the Sea Marsh course, renamed Heron Point, and the only thing you can recognize from the old is the magnificent oak and pine trees that bordered the property. Pete incorporated his signature fairway mounding, Dye-abolical bunkering and undulating greens along with a mixture of sand, mulch, limestone and seasonal grasses creating a kaleidoscope of views throughout. A new feature of board and grass walls along the greens that border water was used, creating a new perception and an opportunity to see an approach shot bounce to
the skies only to drown in oblivion. Heron Point plays from 7100 yards for the big dog with 7 tee positions down to 3700 for a fun family golf outing. Accommodations at Sea Pines include villas, condos and the revitalized and refreshed boutique Inn at Harbour Town. With just 60 rooms, the Inn’s staff can exceed any guest’s expectations. Our room over looked the 1st tee, the ninth green, and the practice putting surface in front of the lovely Harbour Town Clubhouse. Sea Pines Resort offers an eclectic mix of packages which you can choose from at www. SeaPInes.com or call 866-561-8802. My next stop in the Palmetto State was on secluded Edisto Island, just over an hour north of Hilton Head. As you drive down moss draped Hwy 174, you begin to feel this Low Country experience is unlike any other, and you are entering a slower paced and laid back family oriented area. There are no red lights, no hotels or motels, and hardly any commercialization. There is a beautiful beach that runs the length of the island and fishing boats for hire to

The Ocean Course at the east end of the island, skirts the Atlantic for almost 3miles and has been host to the 1991 Ryder Cup, the 2007 Senior PGA Championship and next year it will host the 94th PGA Championship in August 2012. The Pete Dye design will feature over 7600 yards of daunting seaside links golf that will test the very best in the world like they have not been before. There is very little room for error on most of the holes and although there is hardly any out of bounds, the area off the fairways is so hazardous and the prevailing winds are cause for great trepidation. I had great weather the day I played and my caddie kept me on the straight and narrow, so I stayed out of trouble. For information on tickets go to www.PGA2012.com . 23

Golf, History and Hospitality Converge on Jamaica’s Rose Hall Plantation By Steve Woodson
As summer slips away and the days grow short, golfers begin to contemplate tropical, sun-splashed fairways where they can find refuge during the long, winter months. While worthy candidates abound, none offer the unique combination of championship golf, colorful history and superb hospitality served up by Jamaica’s Cinnamon Hill Golf Course and Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa. Both are located within Montego Bay’s scenic Rose Hall Plantation. Its 7,000 acres were purchased more than 40 years ago by the late American entrepreneur John W. Rollins, and have been transformed from 18th century sugar-cane farms into a popular sanctuary for recreation and relaxation. The 6,828-yard, par-72 Cinnamon Hill (www.cinnamonhilljamaica.com, 876.953.2984 or 9381) was re-designed by celebrated architect Robert von Hagge in 2001. Highly ranked by Golf Digest and Golfweek, it excites lowhandicap and resort golfers alike. Its open and windswept front nine is frequently just steps from the 24
azure Caribbean Sea. Case-in-point is “Majestic Blue,” the signature, 453-yard, par-4 fifth hole. A solid drive avoiding three fairways bunkers left and one right will be rewarded with a mid-iron approach to the peninsula-shaped green. But don’t let the arresting ocean
backdrop distract from the task at hand, especially when firing at back pins guarded by water on both sides. The Caribbean still beckons at No. 6, the 160-yard “Witches Reef.” Soak in spectacular views from the tee box (Jamaica’s northernmost Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 6

waves flanking the entire right side. As the course gently climbs into the Jamaican hills, caddies won’t be shy about acting as unofficial tour guides and bringing the site’s vibrant history to life. They’ll point out landmarks like the family burial plot of famed English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning; longtime home of Johnny and June Carter Cash; centuries-old aqueduct and gravesites abutting the 17th green; and waterfall behind No. 15 where a famous scene from the James Bond thriller “Live and Let Die” was filmed. “Cinnamon Hill is the Caribbean’s most unique golf setting,” says Robbie Ames, Director of Golf. “The combination of beachfront holes, towering aqueducts, ancient gravesites, cascading waterfalls, exotic flora and centuriesold Great Houses is unmatched.” Incidentally, Ames would know a thing or two about good golf courses. A threetime All-American at Florida A&M, he represented Trinidad and Tobago in four World Cups. He then turned to caddying for his brother, four-time PGA TOUR winner Stephen Ames. Robbie helped Stephen conquer TPC Sawgrass in 2006 to win THE PLAYERS Championship. Adjacent to Cinnamon Hill and nestled between turquoise Caribbean

Second-home owners and retirees revel in Rose Hall’s sprawling, natural beauty and abundant culture. Retail and office parcels are also available, as well as 175 acres of beachfront property zoned for resort development. Jamaica’s legendary hospitality is just a phone call or email away. Accident Steers Country star Jake Owen From Golf to Music
There was a time when Jake Owen could close his eyes and envision himself playing at TPC Sawgrass. He’ll get that opportunity on Friday, but he’ll have a guitar rather than a 5-iron in his hands. When Owen graduated from high school, his plans were to play golf at Florida State University and eventually play professional golf. He was successful in the junior ranks and was working at the school’s golf camp when his life suddenly changed. Owen was seriously injured in a wakeboarding accident. His mangled shoulder required reconstructive surgery and his golf career was put on hold indefinitely. Little did he know what a life-changing moment that would turn out to be. “I always believe that when one door closes, another one opens up,” Owen said. The shoulder injury closed to door to golf for more than a year. There was very little he could do to maintain his skills. Frustrated and anxious, he looked for another avenue to fill the void in his life and found it with music. He discovered a guitar in his roommate’s closet and immersed 26
himself in another learning process. “I had lost my interest in golf, since I couldn’t play, and found a new love with music,” he said. He taught himself how to play the guitar, slowly learning chords and songs. Before long he was writing his own songs and performing at local establishments. He soon moved to Nashville and not long afterwards found himself with a recording contract. “It seems like every time you make plans, life sort of happens,” Owen said. His first album was released in 2006 and featured three hits, including “Yee Haw” and “Startin’ with Me,” which reached No. 6 on the country charts. His “Easy Does It” album in 2008 had three hit singles, including “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You,” which reached No. 2, and “Eight Second Ride,” which went gold. Owen’s latest album is “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” and has already reached No. 1 as an album and as a platinum single. The feel-good song mixes many of the popular elements of a great country song -- trucks, girls and good times. The video conveys what it must be like to spend a day at the beach with Owen. It even shows him wakeboarding.
“That video was a lot of fun to shoot,” he said. “Those are all my friends. That’s my truck . . . it’s my boat. It captures a day in the life of me.” And while music takes up the largest part of Owen’s life these days -- he’s toured with the likes of Keith Urban, Sugarland, Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley -- he still makes room for golf. Since most concerts are in the evening, he gets a chance to play whenever he likes. His game is pretty good, too. He rates his handicap between a one and a two and enjoys the game more because of his changing perspective. “I found I actually play a lot better because I can come out and not care what I shoot,” he said. “Now I can just go out and play and enjoy myself.” He gets to play some nice places, too. Within the last year Owen has had the opportunity to visit the Chicago Golf Club, Southern Hills and Augusta National. He wouldn’t mind sneaking onto the TPC Sawgrass and taking a whack at that 17th hole and the famous island green if he gets a chance prior to the concert. But his main focus is on Friday’s Kraft Foods Concert for Feeding America at the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open. It’s another effort, spearheaded by golf enthusiast Darius Rucker, to enhance the sport’s link to country music. “It’s hard to not like country music,” Owen said. “It’s a format for real people and I think that’s appealing.”

Jordan Spieth leads Longhorns to victory For the third consecutive time this year, Texas found itself atop the leaderboard on the final day of competition and easily captured the title in the eighth annual Isleworth Collegiate Invitational hosted by UCF and Texas Tech. The Longhorns once again proved their No. 1 ranking as Texas finished -8, and carded a -6 for the final round at Isleworth Golf & Country Club. This is the second Isleworth Collegiate Invitational victory for the Austin team who claimed their first ICI title in 2006. The Longhorns topped the 15-team field led by freshman Jordan Spieth, who carded a tournamentbest score of 11-under 205 for his first collegiate title. Overall, Texas placed its top-four golfers in the top-20, including Dylan Frittelli, who finished runner-up to Spieth (-3 213). Spieth closed out the threeday event by tying Georgia’s Harris English’s 2007 tournament record of 11-under 205. “There is a reason why a lot of pros

practice out here,” Spieth said. “This is a phenomenal facility. It really does feel like a PGA Tour venue.” With Texas well out in front on the third day, the fight for second place came down to the very last hole between LSU and North Florida. Securing a final round score of 10over 298, the Tigers were able to hold off the Ospreys who finished one stroke back in the final round and four for the tournament (+22, 886). The top four golfers for LSU finished one shot apart for the week, with Andrew Presley leading the way with a score of +5 221 for 16th place. Rounding out the top five was Indiana and California who tied for fourth after finishing with matching scores of 24-over 888. The Isleworth Collegiate Invitational was created in 2004 to give collegiate players and coaches the feel of a PGA Tour event. The tournament provides collegiate golfers the opportunity to compete on one of
Jordan Spieth the toughest courses in the nation against the best players in the game. Isleworth’s golf course is a par72, 7,544-yard championship course originally designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, later redesigned and enhanced by Steve Smyers. Isleworth consistently ranks as one of the longest and most difficult courses in the state of Florida and is home to a number of worldrenowned PGA professionals.

Cloister at By David Bailey
There’s an old golf story which you’ve probably heard. It’s about a golfer who goes to his doctor to get the results of several tests. The doctor said, “I have good news and bad news. The good news is that in heaven there are beautiful golf courses in perfect condition, gourmet food, recreational activities and accommodations fit for a king. The bad news is that you have a 9 o’clock tee time tomorrow morning.” There’s a new twist to that old story. A man goes to his doctor to get the results of several tests. The doctor says, “I have good news, very good news and great news. The good news is that your tests all came back normal. The very good news is that the golf experience in heaven is perfect. The great news is that the Cloister at Sea Island is ‘HEAVEN ON EARTH’!

Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters gives $1.8 Million to Charity in Second Year
Chairman, CEO and President of Winn-Dixie Inc. Peter Lynch announced at the culmination of this year’s WinnDixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters Nationwide Tour event that the 2011 event surpassed the recordbreaking $1.6 million dollars raised for charity in its inaugural year. With the help of the PepsiCo TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program, the 2011 event raised a record $1.8 million for charity. More money to charity than we gave last year and provide even more financial support to charities in our area is something we’re thrilled at Winn-Dixie to be a part of. We could not have done it without the incredible support of our sponsors, media partners, volunteers, spectators, and the local charities selling our tickets through the PepsiCo TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program,” said Lynch. “This is why we partnered with the PGA TOUR to bring the Nationwide Tour to our hometown of Jacksonville. Charity is the real winner here.” Tournament representatives, sponsors and PGA TOUR officials display oversized check to demonstrate the amount raised for charity by the second annual Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters. From left to right: Bill Hughes, General Manager, TPC Sawgrass; Jeff Sanders, CEO and President, Jeff Sanders Promotions; Peter Lynch, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc.; Gavin Coles, 2011 Champion; Anne Nimnincht, Volunteer Chair; Tim Finchem, Commissioner, PGA TOUR; Bill Calfee, President, Nationwide Tour; Ryan Jensen, Sales Manager, Allied Insurance. Proceeds from the 2011 Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters benefit the Winn-Dixie Foundation, which supports hundreds of non-profit organizations in the communities Winn-Dixie serves. The Winn-Dixie Foundation focuses on giving back in 32
the areas of health, women & children, education and hunger. Contributing to the total of $1.8 million, the PepsiCo TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program accounted for over $225,800 for non-profit organizations in the Jacksonville area. The PepsiCo TICKETS Fore CHARITY program offers local non-profits the opportunity to sell tournament tickets and keep 100% of the sales they generate. In the second year of the event, 175 charities sold approximately $225,800 in tickets. Those charities will also split a $50,000 bonus pool generously provided by PepsiCo, bringing the total that local charities will earn and receive to approximately $275,800. Executive Director Jeff Sanders pointed out the remarkable effort of the participating charities, saying, “The non-profits participating in the PepsiCo TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program continue to work extremely hard selling our tournament tickets and the partnership with the tournament is truly a win-win. The non-profits benefit from the revenue they earn from selling 100% of our tournament tickets and keeping 100% of the dollars
generated from their individual ticket sales efforts and the tournament benefits from an increase in attendance. Without TICKETS Fore CHARITY™, we would not see the results for charity we do today for the greater Jacksonville area.” “The Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters is a shining example of what can happen when the PGA TOUR partners with a great sponsor like Winn-Dixie and receives the backing of so many selfless, dedicated volunteers,” said Nationwide Tour President, Bill Calfee. “The impact of this one week of golf will be significant on a great number of organizations and individuals throughout the year.” The Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters will return to TPC Sawgrass in October 2012, promising another week of great golf, good fun, and with more hard work by all involved, hopefully an even greater contribution to charity. Charities interested in participating in the PepsiCo TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program are encouraged to sign up by contacting Michelle Rommel at michelle@jspgolf.com. Grow The Game of Golf – The Game Is In Your Hands For Bob Selby of Charlotte, North Carolina, watching his son play golf for the United Sates Naval Academy was very frustrating . While he thoroughly enjoyed the match, there was no way to know how his son or the golf team was doing against their opponents. Even the coaches would scramble to find out how the players and the team were performing because there was no on course resource tracking the field like the professionals have. Coaches utilize walkie-talkies or text one another, sharing information during matches. Selby, an avid golfer with a high-tech background, thought there had to be a better way to keep tabs and share information during the contests. With the help of 2 high-tech experts, Gene Hicks and Adam Zeck, the trio developed an application to view live scoring during the event. The new ‘app’ is adaptable for any golf format-gross or net scoring, skins etc. and named Grow The Game Golf. GTGG is the first golf management application that is delivered to any golf course location using a cross platform smart phone application. The proprietary technology enables real-time scoring and a live leaderboard allowing everyone access. Using this app will improve awareness of how the field is scoring and where a player is, much like the professionals have. Grow The Game Golf’s web app is an intuitive, easy to use event management system that allows users to quickly and efficiently Bob Selby create and manage a golf contest whether for one player or thousands of players across the country. With more than 15,000 golf courses to choose from, the program allows users to select a course, invite players, decide on a golf format to play, choose teams, select pairings and initiate challenges among competitors. Live scoring via GTG Golf can be accessed by any web-connected computer and through a smart phone app, using mobile devices. The GTG Golf event management app easily handles countless concurrent events across the United States while allowing each to be viewed and followed by spectators. Since every 34
golfer’s scorecard is visible, the app provides for more accurate scoring and handicap computation. GTG Golf will archive each event and provide analytical and statistical data for each player. GTG Golf’s target market is wide open. All golfers, charities, private club functions and all golf associations can easily adapt the app to their contests. “This app is really beginning to take off among the golf community,” said Selby.
By Phil Werz
“We have scored club championships, tour championships and even 1 major global event. It’s something anyone can use, convenient, fun and who doesn’t like knowing what their competitors are doing. Plus, at the end there is no adding up numbers or figuring out anything; the app does it all for you.” GTG Golf has already scored the final round of this year’s GOLF. com World Amateur Handicap Championship in Myrtle Beach. “ We were very impressed with the live scoring at this year’s championship round,” added World Amateur tournament director Dave Macpherson. “Allowing players to follow the GOLF. com World Am in real time is a priority for us, and Grow The Game’s technology could develop into a long term solution.” Grow The Game Golf is planning for a major launch in January 2012. “It seems everyone is on their smart phone and those numbers will continue to increase,” Said Selby. GTG Golf merely takes advantage of the growth and development of the digital age and found a way for golfers to enjoy the game and keep track of an event in one simple application.” For more information, get a free trial or register, go to www.GTGOLF.com.

Frost Delays
It’s that time of year for frosty morning. Disney’s Osprey Ridge Course during the winter of 1992.
Frost is a common reason for morning tee time delay. The reason for the delays is the damage that can occur from foot or equipment traffic to the turf when frost is present. Generally speaking, nice crisp fall golfing days and frost go hand-in-hand. With more frost days possible during Florida winters, this is a good time to look at the conditions favorable for frost. Frost occurs on clear cold nights when turfgrass plants re-radiate heat (exothermic reaction). As the plant loses heat to the atmosphere the plant leaf cools. If the plant temperature is cooler than the air temperature then moisture from the atmosphere will condense on the leaf. If the leaf temperature drops below freezing then the water freezes and frost forms. This will occur even if the air temperatures are slightly above freezing. At this time of the year it is not uncommon to have frost form even if the air temperature is in the mid to high 30s. Frost itself does not cause damage, but injury does occur with traffic on frosted areas. Turf damage is generally superficial. This is not to say that traffic should be allowed on frosted 36
turf. If traffic occurs, whether it is foot or mechanical, damage caused by crushing the leaf blade will occur. Initially the symptoms will appear purplish to black in color (almost like an excessive Iron application). The damaged turf will then progress to a straw color. If no damage occurs to the crown, recovery will occur from the generation of new leaves.
The problem is that the air and soil temperatures need to be warm enough to encourage and sustain any new growth, so if cool weather persists, then so will the thin, damaged turf areas. When a frost delay has been declared at your course, have another cup of coffee and wait for the “All Clear” signal from the superintendent to the Pro Shop.
Driving on frosted turf can cause damage that can last a long time.

Make The Turn On The Canadian apparel brand Catwalk Performance Artwear continues to roll out new and unique designs for their fashion forward brand of Golf and Lifestyle wear. Founded in 2006 by avid amateur golfer and artist Lauren Demerling and business partner Sima Anvari. Catwalk is known for bold, graphic designs that celebrate and flatter women’s curves and their trademark use of classic neutrals. “We try to respond to the feedback of women who wear and want Catwalk flair,” said Demerling. “We have had requests from women of all ages and sizes for options in fit, to disguise the areas women are self conscious about, but still flatter their curves. This year we are really excited to introduce Relaxed Fit along with our Classic Fit Catwalk. These shirts have the same styling, still accentuate the waist, with just a little more room in the bust and tummy.” Other new innovations are the sublimated “Artwear” collection, reversible skirts that feature print on one side and solid color on the other, zippy jackets, a convertible golf dress and our “chill out” leisure pant. “Women want clothes that look great, are feminine and athletic, and offer good value for money. They want clothes that will perform on the golf course and in their busy day to day lives as well”, says Anvari. “This is always at the forefront when Lauren is designing. We are always looking for creative ways to make every piece as unique and versatile as possible” Catwalk Performance Artwear can be found in fine golf shops in Florida, Canada and the USA. When Innovex Golf purchased Rife Putters in November 2011, they set their sights on resurrecting a company that, in its heyday, achieved $9 million dollars in sales and was the #1 Putter on The Champions Tour. Rife, which had struggled to manufacture and distribute product due to a lack of funding in 2011 was suddenly not only back…but back with a vengeance. “With an influx of capital from Innovex Golf and a new management team in place, Rife Putters is determined to regain its market share and reclaim its spot as the #1 Putter on the Champions Tour,” said Ben Zylstra, President of lnnovex Golf. “The lnnovex Golf and Rife Putter brands will continue to be marketed independently but many cross-promotional opportunities will be offered at both the wholesale and retail levels.” “As you may already know, Rife Putters is the innovator behind horizontal grooved face putter technology with a patent on specifically-sized grooves since 1997,” said Zylstra. “These precisely spaced grooves allow the putter to gently press into the cover of the ball and grip and lift it into an instant forward roll. Other companies have been trying to imitate this patented technology for years now, but the spacing of the
grooves is the true key to the gripping and lifting effect of our technology. Horizontal Roll Groove faced putters create the truest ‘no skid’ roll in golf no matter where you hit the ball on the putter face.” Rife has plans to introduce several new Island Series models at the upcoming 2012 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL., as well as a brand new Tropical Finish. This Tropical Finish is created by using a vacuum “Ti” plating process” on the head of the putter. A broad spectrum of colors emanate from this deep rich gunmetal like finish 40
creating a “rainbow effect” depending upon how the light hits it. The new finish has other benefits aside from its eyecatching appearance. The finish prevents oxidization, increases hardness and makes the putter very wear-resistant. Zylstra commented that when Innovex Golf first started back in 2004 it had just one goal in mind, to offer the best value of “Tour Level” golf equipment in the industry. For the first seven years, lnnovex offered a full line of golf equipment including drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, and other clubs. In early 2011, after launching its new V-Motion and E-Motion golf balls, it became very apparent that the company had finally achieved its goal, and the company’s focus immediately changed to just these two products. The V-Motion Tour is a three-piece premium ball designed for golfers who demand Tour level performance and playability. It has a cast urethane cover for high spin along with a compensating speed core for distance. It has an
exceptionally “soft” feel almost like the old balata golf balls that were so popular on the Tour years ago, but is much more durable. It is designed to compete with the best golf balls on the market...like the ProV1...and it definitely does! We found that the V-Motion ball performed as well, if not better than, the ProV1 in pretty much every category; including distance, feel, spin and accuracy, and at $15.00 less per dozen than the ProV1… it’s sure to grab the attention of every low to mid handicap golfer out there! The E-Motion Tour is a three-piece surlyn ball, which in itself makes it unique, as most surlyn golf balls feature a 2-piece construction. It has a Progressive Motion Dual Core that is designed to help the ball fly farther, spin faster, and feel softer, all while offering superb durability at an amazing price. A proprietary Aeroblend Cover combines Aero-Control parallel
dimple dividers that smooth airflow for increased flight distance and stability, with roll-promoting dimples that enhance putter feel and confidence. Innovex Golf’s engineering team designed this ball to be the best ball for all weather conditions and it provides mid to high handicap golfers with what we consider almost a “Tour Caliber” golf ball at nearly half the price. “Innovex Golf and Rife Putters share the vision of providing Tour quality performance and playability to customers at an exceptional value,” said Zylstra. “Rife was the innovator of Roll Groove faced putters and the #1 Putter on The Champions Tour for several years, that coupled with the recent success of the 2011 Golf Digest Hot List Award Winning V-Motion golf ball from Innovex proves that the products these two companies design are not only vital, but truly ground breaking when it comes to game improvement technology to the golf industry.” Both the E-Motion and V-Motion golf balls from Innovex Golf as well as the entire line of Rife Putters will be available at a golf retailer near you in 2012 including all the Edwin Watts stores nationwide. The Glenrothes John Ramsey Just in time for the Holidays, The Glenrothes is proud to release the limited edition John Ramsay vintage whisky - the perfect gift for any discerning whisky fan in the family. The Glenrothes, the leading vintage distilled single malt Scotch, pays homage to John Ramsay, one of the original ‘Malt Masters’ at their Speyside distillery. As the genius behind the whisky’s exceptional and longstanding quality, John Ramsay’s signature has modestly featured on all of The Glenrothes labels since 2004. Having retired in 2009, the John Ramsay commemorative bottle is on an extremely limited run of just 1400 bottles. Selected at the point of optimum maturity and maximum flavor (as opposed to bottling simply by vintage), the Scotch is carefully chosen from second-fill American Oak sherry casks. The rich, spicy single malt displays notes of blood orange and vanilla. The balanced oak and fruit combination leaves a long, round finish that is only enhanced by the use of American oak. Given the John Ramsay is far too good to mix, John McCarthy of Mary Queen of Scots in New York City suggests using The Glenrothes Select Reserve for Scotch cocktails. Two of his favorites include The McQueen, en homage to the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, who had a fondness for tartan from the Speyside region. The second is the Scotchsicle, the perfect citrus winter cocktail made using fresh Florida orange juice and a touch of Holiday spice.

West Orange County has more than 16 golf clubs (private and public) and hosts one of the largest annual conventions, the PGA Merchandise Show at the Orange County Convention Center. The number of vendors that provide the goods and services needed to run these clubs along with the events they hold are in the hundreds and the clubs use local businesses to provide them. Duffer Dan Tours The Hamptons Our good friends at Hampton Golf have expanded their portfolio of championship courses they manage and I had the opportunity to check out two of their new superb clubs in Southwest Florida. Hampton currently manages over 20 facilities in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida and is led by M.G.Orender, who has over 35 years experience in the golf industry and most recently served as the 33rd President of The PGA of America. Both properties are Pulte Group developments and Hampton not only manages the golf operations but all the amenities including clubhouse, food and beverage services, recreational facilities and marketing. The first location I visited was the
Plantation Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers, a Hurdzan/Fry ASGCA Signature design, with 5 sets of tees for everyone’s enjoyment from the ’big dog’ 7200 yards to 5100 for the mere mortals. The first impression you get driving in the gated Plantation property, just east of I-75, is the manicured grounds and variety of homes that provide the ultimate golfing lifestyle. The Plantation Great House is the centerpiece of the community with an interior décor reminiscent of a fine British colonial manor house and 38,000 square feet, including Darlington’s, an inviting restaurant and bar with two cozy fireplaces and seating inside or out overlooking the golf course

The Quarry Golf Course and the expansive driving range. Our lunch and service was just outstanding. The course design was carved out of open areas preserving the natural habitat and providing a challenging, thought provoking, water hazard on every hole, fun golf experience. Fortunately, we were paired with members who helped us in shot selection. WOW! The entire layout is grassed with Paspalum, an outstanding turf that provides plush fairways, lush tees, super true putting surfaces, and great deep green beauty unmatched by the typical Bermuda used throughout Florida. The fairways have mounding with rolls and dips to create definite target areas and the greens are highlighted with many chipping areas contoured to test a player’s short game. This is one of the finest courses I have experienced in Lee County and the attention to detail by the staff is second to none. I recommend you don’t miss playing this Plantation. For further information go to www.PlantationGolfCC.com. Getting back on I-75 south for about 45 minutes, and exiting east on Immokalee Road in north Naples, The Golf Lodge at the Quarry was my next stop. After entering the beautiful landscaped
Plantation. A few years ago I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Michael Hurdzan in Pinehurst and ever since he was 13 years old he wanted to design golf courses. He loves the game, the history of golf and course architecture and has the credentials and knowledge to understand the needs of the developer and the limits of the topography to build a great golf course that everyone who is a Hampton member or visitor will enjoy. The centerpiece here is the vast 320 acre Stone Lake, hewn from the remnants of an old limestone quarry, and visible on many of the holes, providing a scenic backdrop to an unbelievable golf experience. There are over 90 great golf courses on the Paradise Coast and the PGA Champions Tour has played their Ace Group Classic here the last 3 years, if that is any indication of the quality of the course. Matt Russell has been the Head Professional since the opening in 2007, and he and his fine staff make sure your day is very special. There are five sets of tees ranging from 7355 to 5100 yards with an abundance of water and pristine native preserves embracing the fairways. The course skirts the far corners of the 830 acre property and does not return to the clubhouse until the completion of your round. The welcoming feeling that typifies the Quarry ambience is reflected nowhere better than the majestic Golf Lodge, with its liberal use of natural wood and stone throughout. Again the restaurant experience is a delectable plate of great food and service with ’al fresco’ dining on the welcoming terrace with panoramic views of the 18th hole and bordering lake with boaters and golfers enjoying The Golf Lodge The Plantation at the Quarry. NFPGA Cup Team
As a stellar tournament season comes to an end, it’s time for some fun in the Cup Matches! It started with the annual North Florida Section vs South Florida Section Cup Matches at Disney on the Magnolia Course the week after the TOUR event. Talk about some awesome course conditions! North Florida defeated South Florida 13 ½ to 10 ½ . The North built up a nice lead after the 2nd matches and held on for victory! It was a total team effort by all, as everybody contributed to the points total. You could sense that this would be our year as we had a strong team of passionate players who wanted to win. There was no denying the will of our players to play hard and bring home the cup for our Section! Thank you to Kevin Weickel and Disney for allowing us to host the matches right after the PGA TOUR event. Thank you to the SFPGA team who took the time and effort to compete as our guests. Thank you Callaway for dressing us nice! As they say at Disney... It was a magical week! Our team: Rod Perry, Sean Gorgone, David Hronek, Kevin Crawford, David Damesworth, Mark Rummings, Bill Shriver, Cary Splane, Doug Rhea, John O’Leary, Freddy Gibson, Stan Cooke and Capt. Jack Binswanger. The cup is in the house!
The Northern Chapter took a commanding lead over the defending East Central Chapter in the first matches 7 1/2 - 2 1/2 to set the stage for their commanding victory in the Jerry Porter Cup Chapter Challenge at St. Johns Golf & CC. The ECC rallied in the last 2 matches but just Gerry James ans Captain Ray Barr couldn’t catch them! All the players played with pride and the competition was fun to watch. As it seems in cup matches, it’s critical to get that big lead and hang on. Our hosts, the Northern Chapter provided a great track, great service, great fun and great food! It’s great to see all the Chapter points leaders get together for some camaraderie and competition. Thank you to Kris Smith, PGA, from St. Johns Golf & CC and his entire staff for the great service and 52
NFPGA Senior Cup Team
Our NFPGA Seniors also hosted the SFPGA in our annual Senior Cup Matches at Reunion Resort. The South gained some revenge and defeated our seniors 19 -11 in convincing fashion. It was a great couple days at Reunion Resort for all! The competition was fierce but the camaraderie was great to see! It was 12 gentlemen playing some great golf and having fun doing it. Thank you to Kevin Baker, PGA and Sean Stewart, PGA, at Reunion Resort for allowing us the privilege to play the Watson and the Palmer Courses and the always excellent service.
Thank you David Leadbetter, PGA, for donating your time to spend the day with us! We understand how valuable your time is and we appreciate you sharing a great teaching experience with your fellow PGA Members. David is always entertaining and down to earth. Although famous, he’s “just one of the boys.” David reviewed many of the great players from Vardon to Tiger. Interestingly, he stated that “the similarities between all these great players are that they are all different.” Hmmm... In the afternoon David worked one on one with our David Lednetter guest students and demonstrated how he works with different people and swings. Also, Thank you to Brendon Elliott, PGA & Little Linksters for his presentation and demonstration in the afternoon sessions as well. Thank you Sean Hogan, Ryan and Jim from ChampionGate for hosting a great day of learning! Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 6

Gleneagles Country Club Opens Legends Course Gleneagles Country Club is proud to announce that their new Legends Golf Course is open after a $5 million renovation by world-renowned Golf Course Architect, Kipp Schulties. A tribute to The Legends who originally called Gleneagles home – Doug Sanders, Sam Snead, Billy Casper, Gay Brewer, Bob Goalby, and Doug Ford – the Legends Course will measure more than 7,000 yards from the Championship tees and par will be 72. As part of the construction project, the practice facility was also redesigned around a magnificent Waterfall that can be enjoyed from many viewpoints around the Club. “The exciting part is that our members will get to learn how to play the Legends golf course all over again. With six sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all skill levels and abilities,
new bunkers, large greens, and traditional landscaping – these are just some of the highlights that our members will experience out there on the Legends,” remarks Joe DeMino, Director of Golf at Gleneagles Country Club. As construction took place on the golf course throughout the summer, Gleneagles members followed the
progress on the golf course through a series of weekly e-mails, YouTube videos, a blog, and hosted golf course tours at every point during the construction. The original Legends Course, an 18hole Par 72 Karl Litten championship course, opened in 1984 and hosted several NCAA Division 1 collegiate and senior PGA Tour events, including
the 1986 PGA Senior Tour Open and the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Florida Atlantic University Spring Break Championship. The FAU Spring Break Championship tournament included several national Top 10 Men’s Golf Teams including #1 Illinois, Ohio State, Northwestern, and Michigan. The possibility of a renovation was discussed in 2009 as part of the club’s strategic planning process. In August 2010, an ad hoc committee of Gleneagles members and
management recommended Kipp Schulties, an esteemed golf course architect based in Jupiter, Florida to be hired as the architect overseeing the renovation because of his creative and artistic abilities, and his availability to be onsite and involved in all phases of the renovation. In early 2011, Ryan Golf, a Golf Course Construction firm based in Deerfield Beach, Florida was hired to oversee the development of the project. Gleneagles’ other golf course, The Victory, measuring 6043 yards with a par of 71, emerged from a similar renovation in 2006. “Renovations of the quality and magnitude that took place on our Legends and Victory will provide value and enjoyment to our members for the next 20 years,” remarks Kraig Spina, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Gleneagles Country Club.

Community Coordinated Care for Children
Denise Cullen and Robert Gamez
Birdies, bogies and a bevy of auction items recently proved beneficial for 4C, Community Coordinated Care for Children. The non-profit corporation which provides educational and childcare resources for Florida families will receive $25,000 from the Team Gamez Foundation to support its programs. The generous donation is the result of the Team Gamez Foundation’s 2011 “Chipping for Children” Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Pairings Party and golf tournament. “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the Team Gamez Foundation,” said Scott Wall, 4C’s Chairman of the Board. “The support they give to the organization can help fund care and education programs for dozens of children.” Former 4C board member, Denise Cullen, and professional golfer, Robert Gamez, hosted a relaxed fundraising party at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort, kicking off the two-day event. “4C is near and dear to my heart because I was on the board for a long time,” said Denise Cullen. “Our guests are awesome people who want to help children and include some major recording artists who are donating their time.” The event included a silent auction and live musical performances by Brooke Burrows, Ira Dean, Johnny Lee, 56
Foghat and local Orlando band Unkle Funk. Former professional football player, Jim McMahon, donated an auction item that included a visit to his home in Scottsdale, AZ., and the opportunity to spend time with the former quarterback. Robert Gamez, founder of the Team Gamez Foundation, has been supporting children’s charities for the duration of his 22-year professional golfing career. “I was fortunate enough when I was growing up to never have anything keep me from playing golf.” said Gamez. “ I’m a huge supporter of children’s charities in Central Florida.
So I get my friends together and make some money for charity and have fun.” The fundraising event concluded with a golf tournament the day after the party at the Orange Tree Golf Club. Thirteen groups of golfers, 70 players total, including celebrities and pros stepped up to the tee boxes. Among the players was Former baseball players Carlton Fiske and Ray Lankford, and PGA tour golfers Carl Paulson, Chris Couch, and Skip Kendall. Isla del Sol Yacht and Country Club raises over $50,000 for Special Operations Warrior Foundation The Isla del Sol Yacht and Country Club held its Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament, November 3rd, to benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF), a top-rated nonprofit organization that provides college educations to the surviving children of fallen Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel. Thirty-nine foursomes competed in a “scramble” format under sunny skies at the par-71 championship golf course nestled between the southern tip of St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach, just north of Tierra Verde. The field of golfers was made up of strong support from Isla del Sol club members, as well as companysponsored teams from the Loews Don Cesar Resort, Alcatel-Lucent, Manheim Auctions, American Strategic Insurance and Ferman Acura Mazda Tampa. The Ferman team bested everyone for the overall first-place trophies. Following the tournament, 250 people enjoyed a full night’s activities that were emceed by Dick Crippen, Executive Director of Community Development for the Tampa Bay Rays. The event in-
cluded numerous raffle prizes, 51 silent auction items and seven live auction items. Isla del Sol is very grateful to the local businesses, club suppliers and club members who donated to this cause. The total amount raised was $54,000. Steve Riordan, Chairman of the Tournament Committee, stated “We far exceeded our initial estimates of proceeds to SOWF for a first-year event. The support and generosity from our members and supporters was truly inspiring.” An emotional speech was given by SOWF scholarship recipient Melinda Petrignani, who lost her father, Army Ranger Specialist Michael Rudess, when she was 8 months old. She described how grateful she is to have had the opportunity to attend college. “It is heart-warming when a community gets together to make a difference,” said John T. Carney, Jr., SOWF President. “The funds raised at this event will provide college educations to children of fallen special operations warriors and also serve as a reminder that their fallen parent’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Homes by Deltona donates school supplies to homeless children With its reputation as Florida’s top-performing school district, the fact that homeless children attend St. Johns County schools may come as a surprise to many. That was the case for Karen Palmer, Homes by Deltona’s general sales manager, when she attended her granddaughter’s open house at Wards Creek Elementary. “I asked Don Campbell, the principal, what the school’s needs were,
and that’s when I learned about the homeless children,” said Palmer. “With school starting, these children didn’t have the supplies they needed.” The quality of the St. Johns County school system is a major factor for homebuyers in Homes by Deltona’s five Northeast Florida communities – Laterra Links, San Savino, Portofino, Isles of the World and Grand Ravine. “We’re extremely proud of the school
system that our residents enjoy,” said Palmer. “But it’s important not to overlook the needs that still exist, even in such a prosperous community.” With the supply list in hand, Palmer organized a school supplies drive for Wards Creek Elementary’s homeless schoolchildren. Along with her own donations, the agents with Homes by Deltona and Deltona Realty stepped up to purchase the supplies on the list.
About Homes by Deltona Homes by Deltona is a subsidiary of The Deltona Corporation. For nearly 50 years, Deltona has created more than a dozen of Florida’s most successful communities and helped more than 200,000 people realize their dream of owning a home and living the Florida lifestyle. While Deltona was building neighborhoods and beautiful homes, it also built something even more important – a solid reputation as one of the most respected names in Florida planned communities. NAIOP of Northeast Florida, the region’s commercial real estate authority and trade association, recently hosted its 2011 Golf Invitational at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club and is pleased to announce the team winners and total funds raised to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Landon Gentry, Long Drive Champion and North Florida resident, hosted the NAIOP/Liberty Property Trust Charity Long Drive to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, resulting in more than $750 raised for the nonprofit. “This invitational was a near sellout for NAIOP and the money raised today will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and all the organization does for our veterans,” said Erika Bjork, 2011 Golf Tournament Committee Chair for NAIOP of Northeast Florida and broker with Colliers International. “We want to thank the commercial real estate industry and everyone who attended for their support during this fun golf outing. ➌ Antigua - 2012
Antigua's philosophy during the development cycle is that each garment be built to stand alone - as though you were creating someone's 'favorite' piece - and build those pieces out to assemble a full collection of favorites. The response to the collection has been received as it was intended and as the collections focus for its initial delivery has been the sun-belt the sell in and sell through has already proven phenomenal. The pop colors as they represent the collections divisive groupings and introduced first are Keylime, Berry and Wedgewood.
