How do you want to be remembered? death of Whitney Houston, who was one of my daughter’s favorite female artists, I started thinking of my own mortality. Whitney had an amazing reservoir of talent still left to be shared. Tragically, she may not be remembered for that, or at least not remembered without her battling drug addiction. Such a shame. The song she made famous “The Greatest Love Of All” is all about loving yourself and we should all take a lesson from those famous lyrics. How do I want to be remembered? How do all of us want to be remembered? I’ve always thought of myself, as a person who has a zest for life, is very forgiving and is very generous. I also feel that I’ve done a pretty good job raising my wonderful children and am a pretty good MiMi too. That’s how I want to be remembered! My motto has always been, Work hard and Play hard! Whitney’s addictions/obsessions are shared by so many. Golfers are no exception. If Tiger died today how would he be remembered? As one of the most phenomenal golfers that has ever played the game or as a “playa.” All about scoring (if you know what I mean)? In my experiences, life is about giving people second and third chances. That’s why I try to give people as many chances as I can (without being a total chump). C’mon we are only human. The other inspiration for this article was that we are featuring NFL star Vernon Turner’s self-published autobiography, “The Next Level: A Game I Had To Play!” in this issue (pg 16). It’s an amazing story of how a once troubled boy rose above the horrific and tragic events in his life onto a prosperous career in the NFL with several teams including the Bucs. Turner came from a terrible childhood and was able to rise above it. You’d never know what he came through by how you see him today. He tries to live life with a smile on his face while projecting a positive attitude. He said that even though writing the book was a painful experience as it dredged up painful memories, he feels that if his story helps one person, then it was all worth it. We all must ask ourselves this question? If you don’t like the answer to the question you need to do something about it. Giving back is what golf and life are all about and what we try to do here at Florida Golf Central. My hope is that through this publication we are able to take the intimidation out of the game, show that golf is a lot of Fun, and raise the awareness of the charitable organizations that golf supports. Writing this letter reminded me of a joke. Three buddies die in a car and go to heaven for an orientation. They are all asked, “When you are in your casket and friends and family are mourning over you, what would you like to hear them say about you?” The first guy says, “I would like to hear them say that I was a great doctor of my time, and a great family man.” The second guy says, “I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher which made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow.” The last guy replies, “I would like to hear them say, ‘LOOK, HE’S MOVING!!!!!” Life is too short and we don’t know when our number will be up, so be sure to make the most of it. The eyes of the golf world will soon be focused on us as the PGA’s Florida Swing begins. You might bump into us at The Honda Classic in Palm Beach, March 1-4; the WGC- Cadillac Championship in Miami, March 8-11; the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook, March 15-18; the Tavistock Cup at Lake Nona, March 19-20; or at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, March 22-25. If you do, 2009 North Florida PGA Amateur of the Year be sure to say hello.

Everyone needs to ask: If I died today, how would I be remembered? To Friends and family, Vernon Turner is a very private man who is known to be his own worst critic and who finds it difficult to talk about himself. To his fans, he is the talented athlete that played professionally for the Buffalo Bills, LA Rams, Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So it was a huge surprise to those that know him to discover he had written the story of his life – a life that had its share of tragedy and dysfunction, but at times was greatly touched by happiness and inspiration.
16
In The Next Level: A Game I Had To Play! - a book that was seventeen years in the making - Turner steps out of his comfort zone and reveals secrets that even some family members were not aware of. That’s because Turner made sure people only saw one side of him - the success and accomplishments; he was careful never to show the hurt from childhood events that accompanied his days and haunted his nights. The Next Level is both a motivating and inspirational story that tells of a young man who had to face insurmountable odds to save his family, and in the process achieve a childhood dream. Turner sees himself as ‘a work in progress,’ and while he readily admits to making mistakes he has learned that “my past experiences became my toolbox for future journeys.” Turner shares the challenges of not only growing up in the 70’s in a predominantly African-American neighborhood of Brooklyn, but facing school days and football with his 5’6” and 98 lbs stature. This fascinating and candid account shows readers
what Turner’s life was like from age five to the present, and what was really going on behind the big smile – moments of pure joy overshadowed by agonizing periods of pain and regret that will be with him forever. While Turner remembers the good times he and his cousins spent at Nana’s house; his beloved compassionate and principled grandmother he openly describes as ‘his heart,’ he also remembers the bad times with his mother’s addiction. In The Next Level readers get to know the deep thinker who over-analyzes and dissects everything in his life, his family, and some of the amazing individuals he believes were meant to cross his path, learning how this all played an important part in his life. Turner admits that while writing his book was perhaps one of the most difficult things he has ever done because it forced him to remember things that were long buried in his mind and heart, by sharing his story he overcame obstacles, learned never to miss an opportunity, and now tries to never take anyone for granted. He hopes the messages in his book will connect with readers in a truly inspiring way because leaving his mark and making a difference is extremely important to him. He believes everyone needs to ask themselves: “If I died today, how would I be remembered?” For more information, please visit: www.vernonturner.com. Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 8

FACILITATES SALE OF SPRUCE CREEK PRESERVE GOLF CLUB FOR $1.325 million
The National Golf & Resort
Properties Group of Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services, the nation’s largest real estate investment services firm, has announced the sale of Spruce Creek Preserve Golf Club, an 18-hole golf course located in Dunnellon, Florida, according to Steven Ekovich, Director of the National Golf & Resort Properties Group based in the firm’s Tampa office. The asset commanded a sales price of $1,325,000. Matthew Putnam, Investment Associate and lead agent on the asset sale and his team of Steven Ekovich and Christopher Karamitsos, had the exclusive listing to market the
property on behalf of the seller, a developer based out of Maitland, Florida. They also secured the buyer of the property, a private investor, from Windermere, Florida. “The sale was really a win-win for both the buyer and the seller” says Putnam. “The buyer purchased a golf course that fit into his geographic golf portfolio. They will benefit from the economies of scale created by the other courses in the area he owns. The seller was able to divest of an asset that was no longer vital to their core business and received a very fair price in today’s market” adds Putnam. The Preserve Golf Club is a Terry Dos designed, championship 18-hole
golf course situated on 179 acres. It is the centerpiece to Del Webb’s surrounding Spruce Creek development, an age-restricted, active-adult retirement community located on 416 acres and surrounded by Ross Prairie State Forest. The Preserve is well-maintained and highlighted by its signature waterfall hole. Built in 1997, the club also offers casual dining from its 5,400-square foot clubhouse at the Sandwedge Cafe.
With more than 1,200 investment professionals in offices nationwide, Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services is the largest firm specializing in commercial real estate investment services in the nation. Marcus & Millichap closed 4,302 transactions in 2010, the highest of any commercial real estate brokerage firm. Founded in 1971, the firm has perfected a powerful system for marketing properties that combines product specialization, local market expertise, the industry’s most comprehensive research, state-of-the-art technology and relationships with the largest pool of qualified investors nationally.

leader on the links Hello, my name is PJ and I host PJ Sports Talk on The Tan Talk Radio Network. (www.TanTalk1340.com) I broadcast from the flagship station 1340 AM in Clearwater, Florida every Saturday at 12 noon ET. My co-hosts
are “Big Deal Dylan” and “Jazzy Jade”. We are the youngest weekly sports talk show hosts in the country! I love to watch ESPN, Disney and Nick and I imitate the sportscasters I see on TV. Some of my idols are Jon Gruden,
PJ and Big Deal Dylan
PJ and Lexi Thompson
Bob Costas, and John Madden. I also like pop music. My favorite song is Stereo Hearts by Adam Levine and my favorite rock group is Gym Class Heroes. So, I’m just like any other 10 year old in 4th grade. I enjoy playing sports and golf is one of the sports I love the most. It’s a calm game that takes patience, skill, and practice. Some of the best times I’ve had are when I hit the links and play 18 holes with my mom. She is the one who introduced me to golf at the age of 3. I would like to see more girls play golf. Lexi Thompson, the youngest LPGA pro golfer at the age of 16, is a great inspiration to many girls. I interviewed Lexi on my talk show when she visited Tampa for the Red Bull Flugtag event. She is someone I really look up to. I want to inspire kids to put down the cell phone, turn off the TV or video games and get off the couch! Golf is the ideal outdoor activity. Some kids may say “Well, I have the Wii or Kinect..... so that keeps me active.” That’s not an excuse! Kids need to get active outside and get some vitamin D from the sun. We are lucky to have so much sunshine because we live in Florida.... the Sunshine State. Even playing outside for 60 minutes every day will make you look better and feel better about yourself. My message to parents is get active with your kids and get outside. Golfing is something I love to do with my mom...even if we just hit balls at the practice range for an hour or work on our putting. And kids, remember, school always comes first. Get your homework done then pick up your golf clubs and head outside! This is PJ from PJ Sports Talk. Talk the talk and walk the walk!

TOP 10 REASONS YOU’LL BECOME A BETTER PUTTER. #10 TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE. Look at a putt from the other side of the hole. You’ll probably see things before it’s too late. Feel the undulations with your feet, the subtle breaks and angles that you might have missed until you walked up to the hole. #9 READ THE BEST SELLER “THE GRAIN”. Shiny or light is growing away and fast, dark is growing towards you, and will be slower. #8 MOST ACCIDENTS HAPPEN CLOSE TO HOME. Look at what’s happening in the neighborhood of the hole. As the ball loses speed, gravity and any imperfections on the green will influence its roll. #7 SPEEDERS WATCH OUT! Look at the hole while you’re taking practice strokes. You’ll get a better feel for the length and pace of your stroke. Speed is the most important factor in putting. #6 GO STRAIGHT. All putts start out straight. Find a target close to the ball to aim. #5 DON’T GET CAUGHT RED HANDED. A lighter grip will allow your arms to swing freely. #4 PERCEPTION IS REALITY. Believe you will make every putt. Don’t hold yourself back. #3 FLOAT THE PUTTER. You’ll start a tension free stroke. #2 ROLL YOUR ROCK. Don’t skip it off line. Get the ball rolling as soon as possible.
26
THE #1 REASON NEXT TIME YOU’RE ON THE DANCE FLOOR, BELLY UP TO THE BALL. Try the hottest new trend in golf. Belly putting. A belly putter can help eliminate the yips and any tendency you may have to change the putter’s face angle with your hands during the stroke. You’ll benefit from a freer flowing stroke as well. One size putter doesn’t fit all. “The Adjustable Putter” actually comes with an adjustable shaft, so you can adjust the length to fit your particular posture. If you’d like even more reasons on how you can become a BETTER PUTTER, a BETTER BALL STRIKER, or a BETTER SHORT GAME player, contact PGA Professional, Don Kress, at 407-905-3585 or dkress13@cfl.rr.com . PURE GOLF Black Bear Golf Club is a quintessential P.B. Dye designed championship links course stretching over 7,000 yards. It is truly a fun test for golfers of all skill levels. Unlike most typically flat Florida courses Black Bear presents a unique challenge with its undulating fairways, elevation changes and fast, well manicured greens. The course has some of the most dramatic bunkers you will ever experience in Florida as well as some of the biggest elevation changes. P.B. Dye lived up to his reputation as a designer of championship courses when he built Black Bear. The focus at Black Bear is pure golf and after over a year of intensive investment the course is in outstanding condition. The club boasts one of the best practice facilities in Central Florida. With a double ended 400 yard range, 40,000 square foot short game complex, 16,000 square foot practice green and 19th hole - shoot out hole, Black Bear is the place to be if you want to improve your game. Black Bear hosts several professional tour events annually as well as being home to select PGA and LPGA players. Play a tournament quality championship course for $50 or less and rub shoulders with a few LPGA or PGA pros. That’s nearly impossible anywhere else in the Orlando area. Black Bear Golf Course is about a 30 minute drive north of downtown Orlando. The course is set in Florida ranch country. The drive from the city is easy and relaxing. It is more than worth the few extra minutes drive both for the golf experience as well as the great value offered.

Charity Golf Tournaments Are Not About You
If you can afford to play golf, you

It’s year in which I participate. This is an not about strangers; it’s about doing organization dedicated to establishwhat’s right. If the PGA Tour can give ing a global volunteer movement that back tens of millions of dollars annucreates opportunities for one-to-one ally to local charities, why can’t we do friendships, integrated employment the same? I do. You can too. and leadership development for There are so many good causes people with intellectual and developaround our community and many mental disabilities. Other great causes have golf tournaments where you include Shepherd’s Hope which provides healthcare Ed Gilbert & playing partner Ron Thompson at for those with the Audi-Best Buddies golf tournament no insurance, the Florida Hospital Foundation has multiple tournaments that support so many causes for people in need that I can’t list them all. How do I know all this? Because I am involved. I chair the Cancer Board for Florida Hospital and raise money for numerous causes that help people with cancer. From free mammograms to children’s bone marrow transplants, research, and children’s cancer palliative care. Probably 30% of my professional time is dedicated to helping fight cancer. If I can do that, you can spend six hours at a charity golf tournament where you can sandbag your handicap, play 30
golf, eat, maybe win an award, contribute to a silent auction and do something worthwhile. Take a day off from playing golf at your own club, replaying every shot with your buddies and downing a bunch of alcohol. If you can afford a golf membership, you can afford participating in a charity golf tournament. It’s not about you this time. It’s about doing for others. I was at Heathrow Country Club last year playing golf with three others in an effort to gain some cancer pledges for the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute. The foursome was made up of me, a Florida Hospital Foundation Executive, a retired doctor (whose wife had cancer) and a college golf coach who had a friend with throat cancer that lived in Hilton Head, SC. The friend in Hilton Head had no insurance and no hospital in Hilton Head would treat her because of that. After some conversations with my Florida Hospital Foundation friends (and they are dear), the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute treated her with chemotherapy and radiation and six doctors donated their time for free. Today she is in remission. A life saved through giving back. By the way, this cancer patient’s daughter is an aspiring professional golfer and has pledged her first tournament winnings back to the Florida Hospital Foundation for saving her mother’s life. FYI; the retired doctor did not put his hand in his pocket for a cancer pledge. Unbelievable. If this brings a tear to your eyes, it should. It does mine every time I think about being at the right place at the right time. I never met this woman; a stranger in need. This woman is living today because of the generosity of others more fortunate than her. There are so many worthwhile causes out there. Pick one that you relate to and play in their tournament. It’s not about you winning; it’s about doing something you like to do and helping others along the way. Remember, all donations are tax deductible if you need it. When it is cut by an expert diamond cutter, however, it becomes a precious stone of unmatched beauty. Sandra Henry grew up in the projects and became a teenage mom at sixteen years old. Being a teenage mom, however, did not stop her from following her dreams. Sandra attended college while working two jobs seven days a week. Sean Foley endorses PSP Golf’s ‘The Little One’ -The most widely used game-improvement club on Tour PSP Golf recently entered into a partnership with one of America’s hottest golf instructors and Top 50 teachers, Sean Foley, to be the lead endorser for PSP’s innovative practice club, “The Little One.” “The Little One” is a warm-up club that is designed like a standard 7 iron with normal specifications but uses a clubface roughly the size of a golf ball. The reduced-size club head helps place the focus on hitting the “sweet spot” of the club each and every time. “The Little One is one of the best warm-up clubs I have ever seen,” said Foley. “It will quickly help improve your ball striking, concentration, swing plane, tempo, and confidence no matter what caliber of player you are. It will accelerate improvement with the end result being a higher number of greens hit consistently during every round.” Recently hundreds of attendees at the PGA Merchandise Show Demo Day were able to swing the “The Little One” and experience the bull’s-eye training of hitting the sweet spot at impact and see rapid improvement in their ball striking within minutes. “Our brain is focused on the task at hand even with a different sized club head,” said Dan Bonomo, President/CEO PSP Golf. “Hitting the ball with the center of the club is a constant priority regardless of the club you have in your hand. By having a more specific (smaller) target our awareness becomes more focused on achieving our goal. Once you are emotionally aware of the simplicity behind ‘The Little One,’ you will have the confidence to hit every shot without fear. The result is more consistent, solid, repetitive shots no matter what club you have in your hand.” The reputation of “The Little One” helped bring Master Golf Teacher Jim Perez to the PSP Booth at
“The Little One is one of the best warm-up clubs I have ever seen. It will quickly help improve your ball striking, concentration, swing plane, tempo and confidence no matter what caliber of player you are.” Sean Foley the PGA Show in Vegas last year. Perez returned home and began practicing with “The Little One” and nothing else. “I hit about 600 balls a week with ‘The Little One,’ and then went out to play at my regular golf course,” Perez said. “I hit all 18 greens in regulation and shot 6-under-par. I’m a pretty good player, but I had never hit 18 greens in regulation before.” He repeated the practice session three more times and played 18 holes of golf after each practice for a total of 72 holes. When he was finished, he had only missed 3 greens in regulation and finished with a 17-under-par. Perez continues training with “The Little One” every day and credits it for helping him win the World Golf Teachers Championships in October 2011. PSP Golf has also designed a similar club for junior golfers called “The Wee One.” It has the junior’s shaft length of 28 or 32 inches with the loft and lie of a standard 7 iron and the club head is also about the size of a golf ball. Like “The Little One”, “The Wee One” is a very versatile product that can be used for chipping as well as hitting a full swing. It can be used at the course, in the backyard or anywhere golfers want to work on their game. “If you want to elevate your game, become a better player, and lower your scores, use ‘The Little One’ before you play,” said Foley who also endorses “The Wee One.” For more information about PSP, visit www.tlogolf. com.

A $30,000 check was presented at UCP’s East Orange/Bailes campus, one of six area locations, with some of the benefiting children on hand to accept the donations. Notable sports celebrities from the MLB, NFL and PGA helped raise a portion of the funds presented by the Walking for Kids Foundation when they hit the ‘green’ alongside some of golf’s finest professionals at the 2nd annual Walking for Kids Pro-Am Golf Tournament held at Celebration Golf Club in December. The ProAm paired amateur players with 26 sports professionals including World
Series MVPs Jermaine Dye, Troy Glaus and Frank Viola. Foundation founder, D.J. Gregory, who has cerebral palsy, walked over 988 miles and followed 3,256 holes alongside the nation’s finest golf competitors on the 2008 PGA Tour. Gregory presented a $30,000 check, a total generated from the tournament and other foundation efforts, to UCP which will impact support, education and therapy programs. 65,000 Central Florida youth have at least one disability. Seagram’s Refreshes the Florida Swing Social Lounge highlight of 2012 Honda Classic
For as long as there have been golfers, there have been thirsty golfers. Whether it’s at a 9th hole refreshment stand in Central Florida or a beachside clubhouse near Miami, the discerning player is looking for a crisp, light refreshment that’s as classic as the game itself. This month, as the PGA Tour swings through the Sunshine State, Florida golfers will be turning to Seagram’s Ginger Ale. The Seagram’s name has been well recognized by its loyal consumers for over 150 years. Now Seagram’s Ginger Ale is reaching out to golfers and golf fans via its groundbreaking debut of its brand new Seagram’s Social Lounge. This one-of-a kind suite, which is making its debut at the Honda Classic, provides 360-degree views of the 17th hole – the last leg of the renowned Jack Nicklaus-designed “Bear Trap” as well as a bird’s-eye view of the 11th hole. It’s a spectacular place to refresh, relax, unwind and connect Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 8
with others – in person or on-line. And it’s free. According to Seagram’s Ginger Ale Senior Brand Manager David Sayyed, the idea behind the Lounge was to create for the general admission ticketholder the kind of upscale experience typically accessible only to the hospitality ticket holder. The 50’x50’ structure including a 40’x40 tent offers 360-degree views of the action; Seagram’s Ginger Ale samples; full cash bar; social seating on all four sides; high-definition televisions; soft seating and a relaxing phone-friendly setting. Additionally, Seagram’s ambassadors will be on hand with iPads to help connect spectators to the tournament’s twitter and Facebook pages; check-in on foresquare, or check out the leaderboards. “We wanted to create an experience for the general admission ticketholder that’s just as distinctly tasteful and enjoyable as Seagram’s Ginger Ale,” said Sayyed. “This is our way of
saying ‘thank you’ to the residents of the State of Florida for supporting Seagram’s Ginger Ale & Mixers with the charitable and philanthropic endeavors of PGA TOUR events.” “The Social Lounge will also address one of golf fans’ most requested services when attending golf events – a place where fans can use and charge their mobile devices without disturbing others. Now, fans can socialize in comfort and style –with each other and on-line – without missing any of the action.” And be sure to pick up your free sleeve of Seagram’s branded E6 Golf Balls by Bridgestone. It may look like a miniature 12-pack of delicious Seagram’s Ginger Ale, but it’s really a sleeve of golf balls just for coming by (first come, first served). All fans seeking refreshment at on-course concessions can enjoy halfprice Seagram’s Ginger Ale throughout Friday’s round and four lucky visitors to the Seagram’s Social Lounge will 37

win an all-inclusive badge providing unlimited food and Seagram’s Ginger Ale at concessions throughout the weekend. “If you love golf, and refreshment,” said Sayyed, “the Seagram’s Social Lounge is the place to be.” “Our customers have made Seagram’s a part of their broad and busy lives,” says Sayyed. “A lot of people enjoy the light taste of Seagram’s whatever they’re doing, whether it’s enjoying fine foods, toasting a round of golf, or simply staying refreshed when traveling for business. Seagram’s goes well with your lifestyle. A cold, crisp Seagram’s Ginger Ale or mixer at the end of the day is a small celebration of you.”
Seagram’s commitment to the game of golf is year-round. Marketed and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company, Seagram’s Ginger Ale and mixers are committed to refreshing golfers and golf fans since the days of Bobby Jones, who appeared in advertising for the Company. Seagram’s activates with other brands of the The Coca-Cola Company at dozens of PGA TOUR stops, most notably by hosting the season-ending TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola at historic East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Last year Bill Haas hit the shot of the year at the Tour Championship, a heroic wedge from the lake to within two feet. His $11 million payday (1 million in
first-place winnings and 10 million in Fedex Cup pay) was the largest in the history of the game. The pairing of Seagram’s Ginger Ale and golf is only natural. For starters, Seagram’s is caffeine-free. For those sure-handed putters hoping to avoid the increased jitters that caffeine can produce, Seagram’s offers a refreshing and reassuring option. The two have a long association. Michael Greto, Senior Sports Marketing Manager, North America Golf Assets manages the company’s efforts in Golf and has been working closely with Sayyed creating the consumer experience behind the Seagram’s Social Lounge. “When we activate at a PGA TOUR
Caught In A Trap: the 17th Hole The Seagram’s Social Lounge is located at one of the premier venues in professional golf. So often, it’s the final stretch that determines a champion. That’s likely to be the case at The 2012 Honda Classic, which is why Seagram’s Social Lounge will be situated with a bird’s-eye view of the dramatic 17th hole.

event, we’re simply connecting with our customers where they already are. Refreshment and golf go hand in hand. They always have,” said Greto. “We’re delighted that golfers are turning to Seagram’s for that refreshment.” The 17th hole is the climax of an infamous three-hole stretch--the 15th, 16th and 17th on PGA National’s Champion Course. One of the toughest triads in professional golf, it was originally designed in 1980 by George and Tom Fazio and re-designed in 1990 by architect Jack Nicklaus. Known today as the Bear Trap, this three-hole horror has drowned some of the game’s greatest names. Nicklaus himself doused balls on 15 and 17 in the first round of the 1994 Senior PGA Championship. Raymond Floyd flushed the same tournament away when he played the water-riddled Par-3, Par-4, Par-3 stretch in quadruple bogey-birdiedouble bogey. “Those two par-3s are incredibly difficult,” Floyd said at the time.”The greens are so narrow; it’s hard to land your ball on them.”Precisely what Nicklaus had in mind. In a modern game that’s so often dominated by power, the Bear Trap tests other more fragile aspects of a player’s game. “That whole stretch,” said Nicklaus, “it’s not about length, it’s about precision. It’s about guts and what you’ve got in here,” he said, tapping his chest. The 17th hole, the Bear Trap finale, plays anywhere from about 160 to 180 yards. What gives this particular trap its teeth is the discomforting combination of wind and water. The wind typically blows a little into
Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 8
the player, often pushing the ball “offshore.” When Nicklaus re-designed the hole he made the water more intimidating by creating a true peninsula green with water on three sides. The only truly safe play is long and left, meaning even conservative shots will have to flirt with a bunker there. Those sand shots--played to a downhill green with the water hazard beside it—are thought provoking to say the least. And if late in the day, a player does find himself having to go for a far right pin here, its hit and hope. A miss to the right will splash like an ice cube into a glass of Seagram’s Ginger Ale. When Luke Donald was asked which hole of the three was the toughest, he pointed to 17. “I think 17 is probably the toughest shot, just from a personal standpoint. Usually the wind is a little bit in off the left, pushing the ball towards the water. It’s a little longer than the 15th hole, too…17 is the toughest shot for me.” After the 2011 Honda Classic, in which eventual winner Rory Sabbatini, played the Bear Trap in 1-under par, the native South African said, “I guess there’s a pretty good reason they call it the Bear Trap, because if it doesn’t get you one way, it’s going to get you
another. It definitely caused some stress for me (in the final round).” From the shaded comfort of the Seagram’s Social Lounge (accessible with a general admission ticket) spectators can take in all the drama of No. 17 while enjoying comfortable seating and free samples of crisp, refreshing Seagram’s Ginger Ale. It’s the best seat in the house.

Gators and Golfers–
Keep Your Distance There can’t be very many Florida golfers who haven’t seen an alligator on a golf course if it has a lake, pond, river, canal or creek on the property. Gators are reptiles and their fossilized bones date back as far back as the Mississippian Period of the Paleozoic Era. That’s long before the age of dinosaurs in the Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era. By the way, we live in the Recent Period of the Cenozoic Era, just for the geological record. So, gators have squatter’s rights when it comes to occupying Florida wetlands or golf course lakes. The oft-cited quote from Kevin Costner’s movie, Field of Dreams, “Build it and they will come” is very true. Seeing wildlife on a golf course is one of the treats of playing this great game. Sometimes people forget basic animal-human etiquette and can create an unsafe environment for both parties. Feeding wild animals makes them lose their natural fear of humans and they start to be more aggressive. I’ve heard stories of crows and raccoons taking shiny objects like watches, rings and bracelets from golf carts. Once gators lose that fear of hu-

L ove at First Sip It was in 1979 that John and Harry Mariani, family proprietors of Banfi Vintners, acquired an 18th century winery now known as Vigne Regali, where today their skilled winemakers produce the stunning, effervescent Rosa Regale. Crafted with the same detail and care it was hundreds of years ago, this rare Brachetto, a semi-dry, red sparkling wine cherished by the courts of Europe two centuries ago, owes its reincarnation to Banfi Vintners. Rosa Regale is made from 100% Brachetto grapes grown exclusively at the La Rosa Vineyard in the town of Acqui Terme located in the Piedmont region of Italy. Perfect for the upcoming spring season, Banfi’s Rosa Regale is sure to turn any occasion into a celebration. Enjoy the festive sparkling wine as an elegant aperitif, pair it with a savory appetizer or enhance an elegant desert. The seductive rosé pairs well with sea-

food, a variety of cheeses and spicy fair. Also famous for pairing perfectly with chocolate, Rosa Regale’s bright, fresh berry flavors complement the sweet velvet of the cocoa. This semi-dry Brachetto has a lively garnet hue resembling ripe cranberries and features a delicate bouquet of Bulgarian rose petals, fresh raspberries and strawberries. On the palate, you are sure to enjoy Rosa Regale’s crisp acidity and a luscious finish featuring sensuous notes of fresh raspberries and strawberries. A testament to the longstanding preference for Rosa Regale, tradition has it that this wine was preferred by Gioan d’laduja, or Giovanni of the jug, one of the most famous characters of the Italian masked comedy. The figure is said to have drawn the inspiration for his bubbly, high spirits from this effervescent red wine with its aromatic froth.

fore your health
The Mind, Body, Golf Connection You drive into the golf course at 2:58pm for your 3:00pm tee time. You’ve been working since 8:00am and left an hour early to squeeze in a “quick nine” before dinner with the in-laws at 6:00pm. Your work was left midway since you left early, and so, you’re going to hear it from the boss tomorrow. You get to the course later than you should, so you rush to meet your buddy at the tee box. Since you don’t want to hold up the group, you swing your driver a couple of times and you’re ready to hit the ball. No warm up needed according to you. With all the rushing and the tight schedule, your mind can’t easily settle on golf... you duff your first shot and after some other mishaps, you end up with an 8 on the first hole. A par 4. By the 5th. hole, realizing that you’re playing like it’s your first time on the course, you begin to think you would have been better off staying at work and keeping the peace with the boss... But your golf punishment isn’t over yet. You still have to finish the round with the lowest possible score (which by now is looking like a 50 unless you birdie the rest of the holes), You have to rush to the in-laws for dinner, and you can look forward to the annoyance of your boss nagging you all day tomorrow. Essentially what’s happening is a snowball effect of bad feelings. What should have been a fun, relaxing, afternoon, turns out to be a chore. Your game is bad, trouble’s on its way at work and you can’t stand your in-laws... Now STOP and think about this cycle: Thoughts create feelings... Feelings create actions... Actions create results... Results provoke new thoughts. Assessing where you are in the cycle and how to start effecting positive changes to make order of your chaos, is important for your peace of mind and well being. Not to mention your golf game. The mind/body connection is incredibly powerful. Things that your mind can imagine clearly enough, seem almost real to you and the line between truth and self-deception becomes blurred. So how can you learn to control this cycle and use it to your advantage? Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 8
If you’re a human being, you were probably able to connect in some way to the intro story above. You might have even felt a little anxiety creeping in, just thinking about all those things that “life throws our way” some times. So the idea is to learn to control the suggestions you give yourself and be conscious of the thoughts you let into your mind. Here’s how. Follow this quick exercise:
Part 1 - Place the gloomiest frown you can imagine, on your face. - Slouch wherever you’re sitting. - Say to yourself: “I am so bored... everything in my life just sucks” And act like you mean it. At this point most humans will begin to feel... well, not so good.
Part 2 - Clear your mind from the last part by trying to figure out what it is that you’re not thinking about. - As you try to make sense of that last sentence, think about something that you truly enjoy. Something that makes you happy. - Sit up nice and tall. Proud. - Imagine that thought that makes you happy and focus your attention on the little details about that thought. Where are you? With whom? Doing what? Etc. - Really let that great feeling fill you up inside. - Feelings are constantly in motion... notice how those feelings are moving inside your body. Imagine that you’re pushing them so they move faster and faster - Result. How big is your smile right now? Could you frown while thinking about these great feelings? For the large majority of the population, the answer is no. What this overly simplified exercise shows is that our minds are suggestible and we have total control over the cycle. You thought about something you liked, which brought good feelings. You wanted to make those feelings even greater, so you made them spin faster and faster. This created a result. A smile. And that means that now you understand that you can use this
exercise to feel better about everything in life. And a new cycle begins. With realizations like these and all the recent news about the amazing power of our minds and the benefits of hypnosis, it’s easy to understand why everyone would want to learn to control their own cycle of feelings. Because no matter how good your life is at the moment, it could always be a little worse. And it could easily be a whole lot better. In golf, the power of your mind can be harnessed and turned into focus, clarity, accuracy and the ability to let go of negative feelings. Try this: Next time you hit a shot that would normally anger you, make a conscious decision to laugh your way back to the cart and laugh as much as you can until right before your next shot. TIP: let your partner know you’re conducting an experiment or he/she may think you’re... “unstable” - What you’ll notice from this test is that bad feelings don’t linger where they’re not wanted. Your smile and laughter show those feelings they’re not welcome inside, and your shot after that is not affected by those feelings. When you’re set on “neutral” the world around you slows down and lets you enjoy it. Think about a pressure cooker that finally releases all that vapor and allows everything to flow freely. Release the dam, open the gates and let only the good feelings to permeate. With the help of a hypnosis practitioner, you can come up with a program that fits your needs and focuses on enhancing your abilities and overcoming your challenges. Things happening in your personal life affect you on and off the course and usually, are not conducive to a lower score. If a better score is something you want, get your mind in the right place, in golf and in life. See you on the course!

Engaging the Next Generation of Golfers
By M.G. Orender
One could argue that golf has never been more popu-
18 holes. In today’s fast-paced world, the idea of spending four hours on recreational activities is a luxury most people lar. You can’t watch an evening of television without seeing do not believe they can afford. So, it is no surprise that one of commercials that use golf as a backdrop for product sales the biggest factors that tends to keep people away from the and services. Advertisers promote everything from cars to course is time. The ability to be flexible with the length of a medication using golf, and sponsorships for golf tournaments round beyond the traditional nine- and 18-hole rounds is a continue to be in high demand. However, actual rounds of golf key component for drawing in more golfers. Depending on the played and golf-related consumer spending do not accurately layout of the course, rounds of three, six or 12 holes might be reflect the game’s popularity. There seems to be a disconnect viable options. Or, simply allow golfers the opportunity to pay between the perception of playing golf and the reality of actuby the hole so that they can play a round that best fits their ally playing the game. As golf course owners, managers, deschedules. For those who still want to get in a full 18-hole velopers and golf enthusiasts, it is our responsibility to define round, express golf programs, which allot specific tee times and engage the next generation of golfers in order to sustain for faster players or encourage golfers to play faster by using the game and its significant economic impact. time delays as penalty strokes, are increasing in popularity. a great way to engage a more seasoned player with beginners or kids. Emphasizing other club amenities that non-golfers can enjoy such as a fitness center, pool, tennis courts and children’s facilities or activities, will also help to draw in a larger audience that in time can be introduced to the game. Research by the National Golf Foundation shows for every one person in the U.S. who plays golf, there is another person who is interested in learning to play the game. With this in mind, providing educational programs for all ages and skill levels that are led by golf professionals are a critical component for new golfer retention. Play Golf America’s Get Golf Ready program which teaches the basics of golf by trained PGA and LPGA professionals in five short lessons is an affordable option for golfers that provides national support and helps to generate new business at local clubs. Programs that are specifically tailored to different types of players such as kids’ camps and women-only programs are also a great way to encourage new golfers to play under the guidance and direction of an expert player who can assist with common mistakes that typically frustrate beginners. Health and fitness are also a driving force behind how people choose to spend their free time. A common misconception is that golf does not provide enough physical activity to be beneficial. However, most people will burn up to 700 calories a round, even when using a cart. Those looking to burn additional calories can rotate walking and driving every other hole with their golfing partner, or if the club allows, simply walk the whole course. Incorporating programs that overlap golf with other on-site health amenities - such as a stretching and strengthening fitness class that helps to improve the golf game - will also promote golf’s health-related benefits. The effort to engage new golfers is slowly spreading industrywide with golf professionals and tournaments encouraging the relaxation of certain rules and modification of elements of the game to give golf more wide-spread appeal. Historic golfer Jack Nicklaus has arranged tournaments with only 12 holes, cups are that twice as large as the normal size and only two-and-a-half hours to play the course. Players are then penalized one stroke for every five minutes over. The Phoenix Open, the leading PGA TOUR tournament in attendance, puts aside the traditional muffled voices and polite clapping to allow spectators to be loud and rowdy. Despite the difference in atmosphere, many players feel that it is one of the most fun tournaments to play. Once on the course, most people will discover that golf is a fun, healthy, affordable and enjoyable form of social recreation to share with family, friends and colleagues. Flexibility and adaptations to certain rules and policies are an easy way for clubs to attract and retain new golfers by making the game accessible to everyone. By giving a little we will get much more back in return and help to sustain the game of golf for generations to come.

duffer dan
Duffer Dan at I visited the beautiful First Coast of Florida this month to play a storied country club established in 1958 and in the 60’s was the site of the Greater Jacksonville Open, what is now The Players Championship. Selva Marina Country Club is located in the quiet seaside village of Atlantic Beach, just east of the city of Jacksonville. The large clubhouse has a fitness and work-out area, a junior Olympic size swimming pool with a very active swim club, a semi formal dining room, the Lounge and Selva Grill open Tuesday thru Sunday. The pro shop, golf range, short game practice greens, club and cart storage and their fantastic tennis facility are located just over a creek a short walk from the main clubhouse. After being a private club for a over half a century, Selva Marina is now managed by Hampton Golf, building into the future while preserving the past of this icon. PGA Past President M.G. 50
Orender is the President of Hampton, based in Jacksonville with a portfolio of over 20 clubs located throughout the Southeast. With a consolidated corporate accounting system and buying power they can provide economies of scale for individual clubs, decreasing operating costs substantially, and better able to re-invest into the club facilities and green grass operations. The day I was at the Country Club the Selva grounds crew was out doing what I often wished I could do- trimming the expanse of century old trees that needed a good pruning, as well as removal of low lying limbs for players’ safety and more open looks. One nice amenity you might enjoy here that some of the younger clubs around the area do not allow, is you can play the game as it was meant to be played, walking this parkland design. The course from the back tees is no slouch at over 7000 yards with a rating of 73.8/136. There are four other sets of tees for the mere mortals and duffers to enjoy a pleasant round of golf. This is a core layout with homes bordering only the edges of the property of Selva Marina, which means ‘Rainforest by the Sea’. Being less than a mile from the ocean, golfers enjoy the salt air breezes year round while playing in their own golf sanctuary. The 1st and 10th holes parallel each other and need a good approach shot over the waterway that crosses both. Once on the elevated and
well bunkered greens, the smooth and quick Tif-Eagle Bermuda grass will allow you an opportunity for good scores provided you can read the many undulations. The front nine is the longer of the two, but I liked the back nine more perhaps because I scored better on it. A quarter of a century before Pete and Alice Dye came up with the design of #17 at TPC Sawgrass, Selva’ s 184 yard, par 3, 11th had water bordering three of its sides where players would curse the golf gods for their own inequities. Things never really change. The last three closing holes are a real treat. The par 3, 16th is all you can handle at just under 200 yards with a creek in front and a stand of trees protecting the green from any faders. Next, a short par 4 with the same creek all the way down the right. I played my drive parallel to the water hazard and had a short iron into the green from there. Eighteen is a reachable par 5 and the hole where Jack Nicklaus had his first double eagle of his illustrious career in the final round of the 1966 GJO. I came close with my double bogey after finding the water on my approach shot. Enjoy a step back into the past with a round on a course much like Donald Ross would have designed had he been here. The outstanding staff will surely make your day an enjoyable one at Selva Marina Country Club. Call 904-246-3144 or go to www.SelvaMarina.com to learn more about memberships and tee times. about tourism and travel in a brief appearance at Disney World outside Orlando. He announced that he will move to help unclog a backlog of visa applications from foreign tourists who want to visit America. Rich Smith, our Executive Director/CEO received an invitation from the White House to attend and be a part of an elite group of guests. President Barack Obama’s visit Thursday to Walt Disney World was as much an appeal to Brazilians and their dollars as it is Florida voters and their jobs. The declaration drew enormous applause from the invited guests. “The more folks who visit America, the more Americans we get back to work. It’s that simple,” he added. Earlier in the day, Obama issued an executive order setting up procedures to speed the issuance of tourist visas to citizens of Brazil, India and China and establishing a multiagency committee to study long-term ways to expand international tourism to the United States. Obviously, golf is a big part of the tourism industry in Florida. The speech was simulcast at the Hall of Presidents in Liberty Square for Disney visitors — who were kept away from the speech site — and in backstage areas so that Disney cast members could watch. Just another day for Rich! Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 8

A New Spin on Golf Lessons SFPGA Professional Dave McNulty and the First Tee of the Palm Beaches offer a brand new SPIN on golf lessons using the Paramobile, an all-terrain adapted golf cart for physically limited players. Teaching lessons weekly at the Palm Beach County Therapeutic Recreation Services in Lake Worth, Dave and the Paramobile offer wheelchair users a new level of freedom and independence. The Paramobile was originally designed for disabled golfers. With its strong chassis frame, the Paramobile can cope with gradients of up to 30 degrees and sideways inclinations of about 17 degrees. The Paramobile will turn automatically into a safe position should these limits be exceeded. The design allows for an absolutely secure footing in any position. Chuck, a regular student at Dave’s Monday lessons, is a former golfer and happy to have the ability to swing a club again, thanks to the Paramobile. “I had a good drive back in the day, and I’m working on it each week with Dave. I’m looking forward to getting out on the golf course and playing a regular hole. I haven’t been a regular golfer since my wife made me choose between golf and my eight children!” joked Chuck. Mickey, another of Dave’s students,
58
also cracked jokes as Dave and an assistant strapped him into the chair. “I never played golf before, but I played a lot of baseball. This chair is something else… the first time it stood me upright I almost passed out! I don’t do a lot of standing on my own these days.” The therapeutic benefits of the golf game for physically limited players are immense. It stimulates the metabolism, stretches the muscles, reduces spasticities and enhances the mobility of their joints. The all-terrain Paramobile with its patented stand-up device combines practical know-how with innovative ideas for maximum playing fun. Its unequalled stability when the golfer is hitting the ball enables performance that is comparable to those of non-handicapped players. “This device actually offers even more than the ability to golf. You can take it out on the beach or take it fly-fishing! Believe it or not, the wheel design on the Paramobile actually causes less damage on the green than this sneaker I’m wearing,” said Dave. “There are less limitations for disabled players now more than ever.” Dave first learned of the Paramobile when he saw golfer Anthony Netto using one at the Honda Classic in 2010. After discussing the details, the Florida Golf Council’s License Plate Program purchased a Paramobile for The First Tee of the Palm
Beaches. “They aren’t cheap, but they are incredibly functional. Paramobiles run around $20,000,” said Dave. Dave teaches lessons weekly using the Paramobile and plans to take his students out soon to play a regular hole of golf at the First Tee’s location in West Palm Beach. The South Florida PGA is proud to further the mission of the First Tee and the PGA Professionals that work to support its mission. “Dave is a great example of the charitable work that is done on a daily basis throughout South Florida by PGA Professionals and this program demonstrates how important golf can be in the rehabilitation process. This is an illustration of what the First Tee of the Palm Beaches does in the community in addition to their great work at the Michael B Finnegan learning center in Dyer Park,” said Geoff Lofstead, Executive Director of the South Florida PGA. Timacuan Receives Rave Reviews As Host To $10,000 Scramble, Won By Mini-Tour Foursome The pre-tournament focus was on all the LPGA, PGA and Champions Tour stars in the field. Players like Brittany Lincicome, Robert Gamez and Jim Thorpe created an excitement around the 3rd Annual Timacuan $10,000 Scramble. But when it was over this past Monday, it was a team comprised of Hooters Tour players from Michigan that stole the thunder, and the $10,000 first prize. Chris Ross, Randy Hutchison, Ryan Brehm and Jack Newman made 16 birdies and two eagles for a 20-underpar 52 over the beautiful Timacuan Golf Club layout to win by two shots. Five teams tied for second at 54. “You hit the ball in the center of the fairway, hit some iron shots close and sneak in a few putts, and the next thing you know there is a 52 on the board,” said Ross. “There were so many great players in the field, we didn’t know if 52 was going to be good enough. But we made a couple of 30-foot sliders that really made the difference.”
Liz Li putts as Jim Thorpe and others look on 62
The foursome eagled two par fives, No 5 and No. 12, and birdied the other 16 holes. Ross had never played the Ron Garl-designed Timacuan, but was impressed by the condition of the course, and the strategy it demanded. “It is a great golf course,” said Ross. “You have to think about where you place your drive, based on the pin placements. Hitting from the correct side of the fairway was really important on this course. It’s all about the angles.” Lincicome agreed with Walsh’s assessment of Timacuan. “This is a terrific golf course,” said Lincicome, a four-time winner on the LPGA Tour. “It is a good test of golf. You have to be able to move the
L to R: Jenny Feng, Liz Li, Brittany Lincicome, all from the LPGA Tour ball around to be successful here.” Another LPGA Tour star Shanshan Feng, the world’s 13thranked player, competed on Monday and liked what she saw. “The golf course is in really good shape, “ she said. “I like the design a lot, and the views are nice. It is fun to play.” Timacuan will host the PGA Pro-Pro competition Tuesday morning. It’s all part of a big week for the golf industry in Central Florida. The annual PGA Merchandise Show takes place Thursday through Saturday at Orange County Convention Center, attracting the majority of golf companies in the world. Timacuan has been one of Central Florida’s favorite layouts since opening in 1988. Internationally renowned architect Ron Garl of Lakeland, Fl, designed the golf course, and placed an emphasis on driving the golf ball. It is a par 72 featuring two distinctly different nines. The front nine serves up a taste of Scotland, with mounds, sprawling bunkers and large, undulating greens. The back nine features more of a Carolinas Low Country feel, with lots of stately oaks, pines and water hazards providing the challenge. Timacuan is located near Interstate 4, just minutes from downtown Orlando. It features a private-club experience at a semi-private facility. The course has garnered many statewide awards, being ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida by The Florida Golf Reporter Magazine. The challenging par-4 second hole has been named the toughest hole in the region by Orlando Magazine. For more information visit www.golftimacuan.com, or call 407-321-0010 to book a tee time. Congrats Kenny Perry! Kenny Perry (64-62-70=196) captured his second title on the Champions Tour by dominating the field at The ACE Group Classic. Perry shot a final round two-under par to keep himself five shots clear of defending champion Bernhard Langer. This was Perry’s first victory since winning the 2011 SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, NC. Perry stressed how much he enjoyed his time in Naples this week. “I love playing out here. I’ve always said that. I have a great time out here and I had a great week this week,” Perry said. “I’ve had a lot of success here in Naples. I really like Naples. I’ve enjoyed my time here.” Perry had previously won two times in Naples, teaming up with John Huston in 2005 and Scott Hoch in 2008 at the Franklin Templeton Shootout, an unofficial PGA TOUR event. This was the first time Perry competed in The ACE Group Classic, as well as his first time playing the Talon Course at TwinEagles. Perry, who started the final round with a three shot lead over Larry Mize, had three birdies on the front nine to get him to 21-under par for the tourna66
ment. Despite two bogeys on the back nine, no one got within four shots of him. Perry totaled 24 birdies – just two short of the tour record for a 54-hole event — and tied Allen Doyle (1999) for the largest margin of victory in the 25year history of The ACE Group Classic. Perry also set the Champions Tour’s 36-hole scoring record in relation to par at 18-under following a 62 in Saturday’s second round. Early in the final round it looked like Perry may put himself in position to break several other tournament records. However, a bogey on the final hole dropped Perry into a tie with Langer for the tournament scoring record Langer set last year. After two very calm days at TwinEagles, wind gusts topped 30 mph during the final round. Even with the wind, Perry was able to run away from the field. Regarding today’s windy conditions, Perry stated, “Yeah, that was pretty concerning when I got out on the range this morning, it was blowing 25 (mph). I was like oh, brother, this golf course is going to play totally different.” Despite the wind, Perry played solid golf throughout the entire round. There is no doubt that his three
shot lead at the beginning of the round allowed him to play a little more conservatively. Before his final round Perry stated, “My goal was just to par every hole. My target score was pars, and if I could sneak a birdie in there every now and then, hopefully they draw interest, kind of hang on to them.” With the win, Perry earned 240 Charles Schwab Cup points. The player earning the most Schwab Cup points throughout the Champions Tour season will receive a $1 million payout. Langer (66-65-70=201) eagled No. 17 for the third straight day and finished in second place. Tom Lehman, the 2011 Champions Tour Player of the Year, was in second place for most of the final round, but bogeys on No. 12 and No. 17 relegated him to a tie for third. He finished at even par on the day to tie Bill Glasson (68) and Mike Goodes (69) for third. First-round leader Larry Mize was tied for second going into the last hole, but he then hit two balls into the water and dropped to seventh place with a final round 75. Aesthetic Enhancement

Addison Reserve Country Club in Delray Beach, an exclusive golf and tennis community of 718 luxury single-family homes, is pleased to announce the completion of its newly renovated award-winning golf courses. As part of the recent $18 million Clubhouse expansion and renovation project, the golf courses have undergone extensive fairway and rough improvements such as new turf and aesthetic enhancements, including the construction of an elaborate waterfall that will be lit by night as its centerpiece. Originally designed by renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills, the three, 9-hole championship courses feature lush native vegetation, flowering foliage and sparkling lakes capturing the essence of South Florida and further enhancing the golf experience at Addison Reserve. The overall renovation has improved course playability as the new Celebration Turf provides a much denser and more durable playing surface. The

The program allows members to order merchandise carried in the Pro Shop in the appropriate size or color preference should the item(s) not currently be in-stock at the
Club’s member discount pricing. Renovated by Kipp Schulties Golf Design, Inc., of Jupiter, FL, the three 9-hole courses – Redemption, Trepidation and Salvation – provide a challenging experience featuring a breathtaking backdrop to the elegantly appointed homes in the nineteen private village enclaves of this unique community. Redemption, with its slightly shorter length, offers the chance to win back a few squandered strokes. The ninth hole on Redemption is somewhat of an equalizer hole in that the longer hitter will likely use a shorter club off the tee so the shorter hitter may find an opportunity, with a delicate approach, to win the match. Trepidation starts out slow much like the steady climb at the start of the roller coaster, and then it twists, turns and ultimately descends on the ninth green. Salvation, whose renovation will be completed in summer 2012, has numerous lakes that players are challenged to avoid. Addison Reserve is a premiere golf and tennis community of 718 luxury homes. Recognized as a Platinum Club of America 5-Star Private Club and Emerald Club Award recipient, Addison Reserve Country Club is located in charming Delray Beach, Florida. ➎ Two Good Rounds Everybody loves a celebration, and golfers are no exception. It has long been a tradition after a round of golf to gather together and celebrate a win or merely enjoy the company of friends, new and old, with a second round at “the 19th hole,” a slang term used in golf that refers to a pub, bar, or restaurant on or near the golf course. Two Good Rounds is an international tribute to great golfers and the golf lifestyle, which often includes the enjoyment of drinks. In each chapter, golf writer Elisa Gaudet asks a notable professional golfer the same questions: What is your favorite drink? What is your favorite clubhouse or 19th hole? And what is a special time or memory from a 19th hole? The results yielded a wide array of answers ranging from crazy celebrations after a win to heartfelt memories of childhoods spent playing golf with family and friends. From the Arnold Palmer (½ lemonade, ½ iced tea) to the margarita (the preferred drink of tour star Vijay Singh), drinks and golf are inextricably linked. Two Good Rounds shows you how.
