Here’s Hoping For The Breast With the recent heartbreak of the Ryder Cup, most of us are just a little bitter (admitting it is the first step!). How about instead of moping around the house, avoiding the golf course in fear of Ryder Cup flashbacks, we develop a new mentality? Forget the winners and the losers and celebrate the victories of each player and their love for the game. No, I’m not kidding around…it’s worth a shot! A fresh new way of thinking can really help in mourning the loss of an American Ryder Cup victory. No one really enjoys hearing those corny, inescapable adages like “Be the bigger man”, or “No shame in

perspective. No matter how much we love the game, at the end of the day, it’s just a game. So, what can we do but shrug our shoulders and say “better luck next time”? That being said, Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established to celebrate the victories as well as the losses. Unfortunately, we are all too aware of the impacts of breast cancer on some level; whether it be first hand, through family or friends, or otherwise. Take the time this month to raise awareness for the fight and the cure by doing what works for you. Whether it be donating, volunteering, or just embracing the pink (real men really do wear pink), now is the time to honor the universes ultimate party favor—WOMEN!

improving performance

Chicken Wings Are Only Good For An Appetizer

The golf swing

is a complex sequence of events that all lead up to one moment, which is contact between the clubface and the ball. From start to finish, there are literally thousands of intricate moves that could go wrong and keep you from hitting the ball like you want to. While there may be an infinite number of swing flaws, most problems can typically be traced to one major swing flaw that most amateur golfers suffer from. It’s called the dreaded ‘chicken wing’. Now I’m not talking about lunch at the clubhouse, I’m talking about a nasty swing habit also known as the ‘flying right elbow’. Keeping your right elbow tucked (for right-handed golfers) during the golf swing is very important if you want to form a consistent, repeatable golf swing. Your right elbow should stay relatively close to your side so you stay connected throughout the entire golf swing. This promotes a proper swing, clubface positioning throughout the swing, and angle of attack coming into the golf ball. It also helps to prevent the dreaded “over the top” move which causes most golfers to slice the golf ball. So what’s the solution? How about keeping your arms connected? Not permanently, of course, but during your swing. As with most golf tips, easier said than done. Enter the Swedge. When applied, the Swedge swing training aid will restrict the right arm from lifting out of position (flying right elbow) during the backswing, and will keep the left arm from separating too far from the body in the forward swing. And, thus, you stay connected. The Swedge is recommended by top golf instructors and was voted “Best 16

Product of 2012” by the International Network of Golf. It has the ability to correct several swing flaws simultaneously and will help eliminate your hook or slice while improving your accuracy and increasing your power and distance. It’s one of the simplest and most effective training aids on the market. This remarkable training aid is easy and intuitive to use, and reinforces a fundamental swing mechanic to help groove the proper swing path. It is also very portable and fits both right and left handed golfers. Simply tuck the small, washable, half-moon pillow into the armpit of your dominant arm and swing. The Swedge should not fall out of place until your follow through, therefore ensuring a compact and fluid swing . While many instructors will tell you to jam a towel or club headcover into your armpit, the Swedge has been researched and designed specifically to help your swing. The Swedge gives you instant feedback and helps your shoulders turn your arms instead of your arms turning your shoulders. The Swedge sells for $29 and comes in a nylon casing with a clip that attaches to your bag. The unique shape, weight, thickness, and materials that make up the Swedge are all Made in the USA. The Swedge is available in Red, Black and Blue and you can purchase your Swedge at all 85 Golfsmith locations nationwide. Or go online to see video clips and more information at www.avidgolfusa.com.

How the Swedge Works: 1. Place the Swedge under your armpit 2. Get set up 3. Relax your shoulders 4. Apply pressure towards the Swedge with your arm and elbow during your backswing 5. Strike the ball and release the Swedge as you follow through Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

Living Life as a Bachelor Provides an Abundance of Freedoms You can eat pizza for breakfast and cereal for dinner. There’s little pause to wearing the same shirt on consecutive days. You make a trip to the store to buy new boxer shorts to avoid washing laundry. The floor is your closet and the bed is only made minutes before you make it with your latest conquest. The toilet seat remains up, the sink full of dishes, the vacuum only sees action when your mother visits, and cooking dinner requires a can opener and a microwave. But when a woman arrives on the scene, the single man’s life changes, especially if he spends an inordinate amount of time on a golf course. But it doesn’t have to be for the worse. Thus begins, “The Married Man’s Guide to Golf,” a new eBook that will be released in the Fall of 2012. Written by veteran golf and hockey broadcaster Kevin Sylvester, the guide is based on Sylvester’s transition from bachelor to married man, and how other golfers can benefit from his lived experience. Humor is abundant as Sylvester guides and advises men on how to play through some of the hazards of golf and marriage. He’s developed a golf pre-nup, writes about how to deal with golf grief, what to do when the little golfer arrives and most importantly, how to play more golf without sending your marriage out of bounds.

About Kevin Sylvester: Veteran broadcaster Kevin Sylvester co-created and hosts “Tee 2 Green” on WGRZ–TV (NBC) in Buffalo, N.Y., U.S.A., in 2006. The show, which is now in its 18

seventh season, features golf courses in the Buffalo/Niagara region, as well as tips and the latest equipment. An employee of the Buffalo Sabres, Sylvester is the host of “Sabres Hockey Hotline,” a year round program that airs on WGR-AM in Buffalo. From 2005 to 2012, he was a staple on Sabres telecasts on the MSG Network, appearing on “Gamenight” intermission reports and “The Lexus Shootout” post-game show, which he co-created in 2005. Sylvester also served as the road playby-play announcer for the Sabres. The 1995 graduate of the State University of New York at Fredonia has an extensive background in radio serving as talk show host and reporter at WBEN-AM and WGR-AM in Buffalo, and WBT-AM in Charlotte, N.C. During

his tenure as sports director at WBT, the station won six sports broadcasting awards, and Sylvester was named Best Sportscaster by Electronic News Association of the Carolinas in 2001. He has also called play-by-play for University at Buffalo football, the Buffalo Destroyers of the Arena Football League, college hockey on Adelphia Cable, and he filled in as play-by-play announcer for the former Charlotte Hornets in the NBA. Sylvester served as director of Amateur Athletics for the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, working with local colleges in all aspects of NCAA events at the arena. He was marketing and promotions director for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s College Basketball tournament in Buffalo in 2007 and 2010. Sylvester was instrumental in preparing the successful bid package and subsequent site visit that resulted in USA Hockey awarding the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under 20 Championships to Western New York, and chaired the administration and protocol committees for the event. He was the chairman of the Battistoni Golf Scholarship Fund from 2006-2010, co-chaired the Alfred Caffiero Golf Classic from 2006-2009 and currently serves on the advisory board of First Tee of Western New York Sylvester and his wife, Donna (who started playing golf in 2011), have three children. He came up with the idea of the golf pre-nup after he got married. On Twitter: @kevsylvester On Facebook: http://www.facebook. com/kevin.sylvester.18 Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

Peete joined several hundred spectators as more than 80 junior golfers from around the world competed during the 54-hole Junior Golf Scoreboard ranked tournament. Brittany Shin, age 11, from Cape Coral won the girls’ division championship scoring 80, 76 and 72. Cape Coral ’s Jake Sherwin finished second in the 16-18-year-old boys’ division, after a sudden-death playoff with Anthony Quayle of Australia . Sherwin shot a 71, 70 and closed at 75. Landon Weber, age 14 from Bonita Springs , won the 13-15-year-old boys’ division scoring 72, 69 and 69. The 2012 Junior Masters raised more than $15,000 for the Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association’s (SWFJGA) scholarship fund. The event was established 20 years ago by the SWFJGA Association as a premier 54-hole tournament to provide an opportunity for juniors to showcase their talents and fund a college scholarship program for its members. The concept was to honor golf’s past, present and future as represented by its tournament namesakes, the late LPGA great and Hall of Fame member Patty Berg (founding Cypress Lake Country member) and local PGA professional Nolan Henke (current Cypress Lake member), as well as local juniors who represent the future of the game. The scholarship fund has given more than $215,000 to graduating seniors and upperclassmen from its organization. Located at 6767 Winkler Rd. in Fort Myers , Cypress Lake Country Club is a member-owned, private country club with more than 280 members. Since the opening in 1959, Cypress Lake Country Club has provided an awardwinning private country club golf experience to Southwest Florida players and has been selected to Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses list. Members enjoy access to golf and tennis as well as social and dining experiences at the clubhouse. For more information, please call 239-481-1333 or visit www.cypresslakecc.com. 20

A Superb Golf Resort in Puerto Rico On cliff tops along the rugged coast of Isabela, Puerto Rico, the Atlantic Ocean has carved faces of Taino warriors, and wind-sculpted trees hug the land. This is where Stanley and Charlie Pasarell spent years hitting golf balls. Discovering tees, fairways and greens, they were inspired by this spiritual place. The result: Royal Isabela. Royal Isabela, the $100 million golf community and private membership club perched on the dramatic bluffs of Costa Isabela at the northwest edge of Puerto Rico, has opened “Las Casitas,” reserved for guest stays, and “La Casa,” the main hospitality center that houses the property’s signature restaurant. Last year, the Golf Links at Royal Isabela, designed by Stanley and Charlie Pasarell and golf architect David W. Pfaff, opened to great praise. GOLF Magazine named it among the “top new courses to watch for” in the 2013 edition of the World’s Top 100 Golf Courses. Located 90 minutes from San Juan International Airport and just 20 minutes

An experienced hospitality staff at Royal Isabela oversees every detail, including a courtesy call before arrival to determine transportation needs, in-room amenities, dinner and golf reservations, room service, concierge and complimentary transportation around the property. Casitas rates range from $609 to $1409 (low to high season) per night, which includes breakfast and golf for two each day of the stay. Members receive preferred pricing. There are no minimum stay requirements during low season; there is a two-night stay preferred during high season (November-April), and required on weekends during high season. La Casa—the community’s “home” and nerve center—sits at one of the region’s highest points, so it is cooled by ocean breezes while offering panoramic views over land and sea. Besides checkin and other resort functions, La Casa is where guests will find The Restaurant, the comfortable Library, and the Croquet Bar, which looks over the 18th hole. In keeping with island traditions, La Casa has been designed in Spanish colonial style, from its stone tower to century-old roof tiles, as well as wrought-iron chandeliers, antique furniture, and artwork. The Restaurant at La Casa has been created under the guidance of award-winning chef David Pasternack of New York City’s famed Esca Restaurant and noted restaurant consultant John Sergi. The restaurant offers the freshest in farm-to-table dining with the majority of the fruits, vegetables

and herbs literally grown in the soil of Royal Isabela. The intimately sized Restaurant at La Casa features eight tables inside, seating for five at the pizza oven bar, and more tables outside on the terrace. With the benefit of Royal Isabela’s River Canyon Farm and Organic Gatehouse Garden, the executive chef can combine locally sourced ingredients with traditional European and Puerto Rican cooking techniques. Daily menus include fresh, line-caught, local seafood such as lobster, grouper, snapper and dorado (mahi-mahi), as well as homemade pastas and an array of traditional Puerto Rican dishes. A select variety of wines from around the world complement the daily menu options. The founders of Royal Isabela are Stanley Pasarell, President, and Charles Pasarell, both descendants of Dr. Manuel Zeno Gandia, a celebrated Puerto Rican literary figure. The brothers, who were born and raised in Puerto Rico and in the 1960’s were dominant in American tennis at the junior, college, and national levels, bring their love of the local culture and hospitality, as well as a great passion for golf and nature to the property. Edwin Perez, a well-respected business leader in Puerto Rico, also is a partner in the project. For additional information or to reserve rooms, access the web site at www.royalisabela.com or call (787) 609-5888 or (855) 609-5888.

from Aguadilla International Airport, the Royal Isabela community stretches along 426 oceanfront acres from ocean side to the tops of cliffs that range in elevation from 150 to 350 feet above sea level. Guests at Royal Isabela have their choice of 20 beautifully designed onebedroom Casitas, with expansive indoor and outdoor space, ocean views and close proximity to the golf course and other amenities. Each Casita has an outdoor patio with an ocean view, and a private terrace with its own plunge pool. 24

on the green

By Amy Duncan

A Course in “Repurposing” Golf greens are getting greener by tapping into the “repurposing” trend. Cloths used in the beverage industry to strain liquids are given a second life on the golf course as lawn tarps. Because of their lightweight and supremely durable nature, greenskeepers often use the tarps to pile debris on when trimming and pruning. Lawn tarps are not the only “repurposed” materials you will see on the green. Old conveyor belting is reused as permanent or temporary golf cart paths. Used wine barrels are “repurposed” as planters or trash cans. Pond liners and water features are creatively made with advertising billboard vinyl or roofing membrane. This unique “repurposing” concept not only adds life to the materials by keeping them out of the landfill, but it also provides consumers with sustainable products that do the job at a cost savings 50%-75% over purchasing new.

26

repurposedMATERIALS, a Denver based company, is dedicated to providing both economic and environmental solutions through the creative act of “repurposing.” While traditional recycling involves re-manufacturing processes, mass participation, and a lot of energy, “repurposing” gives used products a new life without having to change them at all. repurposedMATERIALS, www. repurposedmaterialsinc.com, finds materials that can no longer be used in their original industry and makes them available for consumers to resourcefully re-use in a different application. Not only are golf courses using “repurposed” materials, but they are also contributing to this trend by keeping driving range nets out of the landfills. repurposedMATERIALS accepts a variety of waste and byproducts that can be re-used in another industry, for another purpose.

Not all industrial waste and byproducts are good candidates for repurposing. There are standards used by repurposedMATERIALS that can help clarify what makes a byproduct a viable option for repurposing. Just think of the acronym S.A.V.E. First, is there a Standard measurement for the product- is each unit the same size, color, texture, etc? Second, is the product readily Available or recurring in the waste stream? Next, is it Versatile or able to be re-used in several ways? Finally, it’s important to consider the Engineering of the byproduct. What are its ingredients, characteristics, and properties? Damon Carson, the founder of repurposedMATERIALS explains, “Versatility of reuse is key for us. I probably wouldn’t buy 50 toilets from an old apartment building because it’s less easy to repurpose them than roofing tiles.” Keeping the green truly green requires a commitment and dedication to preserving the environment. Protecting our natural resources does not require a great deal of money, but rather the insight and ingenuity to see a second life in industrial waste and byproducts. Each beverage filter cloth lawn tarp or conveyor belt golf cart path is one step closer to a truly green green. Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

Fairway Styles Who says women’s golf has to be similar to men’s, with boring, mundane outfits? Not American professional golfer Lexi Thomas and Hollywood celebrity stylist Sophia BanksColoma! Together, the pair is changing the game of golf, one outfit at a time. At age 12, Lexi Thompson was the youngest golfer ever to qualify to play in the U.S. Women’s Open. She turned professional in June 2010 at age 15. On September 18, 2011, at the age of 16 years, Thompson set a new record as the youngestever winner of an LPGA tournament when she won the Navistar LPGA Classic. THIS year Lexi decided she wanted to attend her High School Prom. But who would she take? She decided to reach out to her fans and selected Mark Scott, a Lance Corporal from Naperville, IL. Lexi selected him after more than 100 servicemen (ages 18-20) uploaded stories on why they should be chosen to be her prom date. Now the big problem--what was she to wear?? ENTER Hollywood celebrity stylist Sophia Banks-Coloma. SOPHIA is an internationally renowned celebrity stylist, costume and fashion designer (of Whitley Kros-- label worn by Amy Adams,

Kate Hudson, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Rachel McAdams, Charlotte Gainsbourg), and editor of must-read fashion blog (www.banksstyle.com). Dubbed as the Aussie “Rachel Zoe,” she has quickly become Hollywood’s must-have stylist and fashion insider, receiving Harper’s Bazaar’s “Style Leader” award twice in one year, Vogue Australia’s “Undiscovered Designer of the Year,” a nomination for the “Ecco Domani Fashion Award” and as a highlighted designer at MercedesBenz Fashion Week. SOPHIA styled Lexi for prom. Together the duo tried on top designer dresses, pulled shoes, and mixed-and-matched jewelry. In the end, they chose a red gown designed by Susan Rose, a perfect match for Mark’s uniform decorated with honorable medals. SOPHIA and Lexi are now an inseparable duo. Sophia has dressed Lexi for more than just prom, but for golf events and tournaments as well! They have been working together to bring sexy fun feminine fashion to the game of golf. Using bright colors and innovative designs, the two have been putting golf down a course it’s never seen before.

It’s Like Netflix for Golf Balls Do you ever wonder It’s Like Netflix for Golf Balls Do you ever wonder why you didn’t think of that before? Remember the first time you saw ketchup in a squeeze bottle? Didn’t you think, ‘brilliant idea— wish I had done it’. Well, here’s another one for the books. The company, Play My Ball, backed by former executives of Microsoft, Fox News, Citi Bank, ShoeDazzle and others, recently launched their newest product called, ‘MYBALL’. When asked how CEO and creator, Derek Broes, came up with the name, his answer, like his product, is innovative. “I was thinking in my head and out loud, ‘what should I call it’? I never say, ‘where is my Titleist’!” And with that, the unintended puns started. Both Broes and his executive team thought it was either going to be a huge success or a train wreck. After receiving great reviews in its short time on the market, it is safe to say they have a successful product. All joking aside, this isn’t just another golf ball on the market. As their tag line

30

says, ‘Get Your Mind Out Of The Bunker And Back Into The Game’. Why do 9 of 10 golfers tested prefer MYBALL? The number one comment was “MYBALL flies straighter and goes longer”. They are Pro-Performance balls creating less side spin, travelling straighter and longer—this enables the golfer to find themselves on the fairway more often. The new Tour Ball, for lower handicap golfers is due out in the next few months. Over the last decade, golf ball companies lagged behind the technological advances in materials used for making golf balls. As a result, very few ball companies, if any, use materials they make or own. Being the huge companies they are, DuPont and 3M have taken over the industry from a materials stand point. This allowed MYBALL to use the same materials and construction as the largest brand names in the industry including Titleist, Nike and other top brands. MYBALL is manufactured with materials from DuPont USA and manufactured at the same location as many of the (so called) “best balls in golf” are made. Thermoplastic materials allow MYBALL to push the limits of the USGA envelope, maximizing the speed limit without going over. These materials are used on some of

the best balls on the market and played by many Tour Players including Stephen Ames, Stewart Cink, Richard Finch, Lucas Glover, Matt Haines, Anthony Kim, Kevin Kisner, Justin Leonard, Jamie Lovemark, Pablo Martin, Francesco Molinari, James Morrison, and Carl Pettersson. What else makes MYBALL different? Short of having a better name and bringing more fun to your game, they offer an innovative and less expensive alternative to buying. The team at MYBALL truly believes that if they can save you money, make it more convenient to get a sleeve of balls and provide you with a quality product, you can play more golf. It’s as simple as that. The product can only be purchased and delivered via a monthly subscription service. 1 sleeve (3 balls) for $6.99 per month, 2 sleeves (6 balls) $11.99 per month, 12 balls (1 dozen) per month for $24.99 or 2 dozen balls for $39.99 per month. That’s less money than 1 dozen ProV 1’s! And, you won’t pay a shipping cost either. With this unique subscription service, the golfer never has to worry about forgetting to buy balls at the store and paying a premium at the course as a result. Greens fees are not cheap and losing a $5 ball could actually hurt your game. Just think if you could save $20 per a dozen balls and still get the same quality result. Now, you can not only play more golf because of the savings, you can shoot straighter and longer with a tested performance ball. With MYBALL, you can stop worrying about buying and losing balls again. MYBALL will not let you down. It will be there every month, it will not bother you nearly as much when you lose it and you will always be able to say to that other golfer that the ball he is about to play–“Hey, that’s my ball!”–and mean it. For more information, to see some great video clips and to start your subscription, please visit www.myball.com. Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

Summer Loving Summer was a great time for golfers or friends to simply come together and enjoy this wonderful game. I got the opportunity to take part in playing many great courses and reminisce about the many fun and enjoyable times on and off the course. As a competitive junior golfer, it took a lot to prepare for what the summer had in store for me. I had to persevere through the tough practice sessions, school pressures, and dreadful rounds People often say, “practice makes perfect”, but no one ever said it was going to be easy. Before summer I found myself with a new coach and a totally different view on how to practice. The biggest thing I learned is that it matters about the quality rather then the quantity of your practice sessions. It is easy for someone to stand on the range and bang a bunch of balls, but what are they really getting from that?

32

Also, I found that if I cut the time of my practice sessions and put more effort into that amount of time, it takes a big amount of pressure off my mental game. I think that is because when I stand on the range for 4 or 5 hours a day, my mind starts to get clogged with information. One thing that has also helped my game a tremendous amount was using video analysis to work on my swing. Using video analysis gives you a mental picture of what your swing looks like and a better understanding of what you need to work on. With all that said, preparing for last summers season was something new for me and it did have its falls during practice, but it definitely showed in how I performed on the course. School pressures also made preparing for my summer a memorable one. The biggest part about school was the finals. Scoring well on your finals meant that

Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

you understood all of the material from that year, and it would show on your report card. Studying for finals took some time away from my daily practice. I even found myself going a couple days without practice just to study. I would say the aspect that studying affected most was my mental game and how I thought on the course. Luckily for me I have a local driving range that is open until 10 PM. Most days I found myself studying and doing homework during the day and practicing at night. But knowing that I would do great on the finals also made me feel good on the course. I Kind of had good and bad emotions when I was playing, but the end result overwhelmed my expectations. I guess it goes without saying that hard work does pay off. Lastly, bad rounds were one of the tougher things to overcome during my preparation for summer. It takes away a lot of confidence away to have a bad round, but then again it gives you a better reason to practice and try harder. Most golfers tend to dwell on the bad and not the good. Me, I tend too think about the good. It bothers me that a lot of people live in the past when they should be preparing for the future. A bad round

Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

is just one out of thousands that a competitive golfer will have in his lifetime. The thing that worked best for me when I had a bad round was to diagnose what went wrong and work on that aspect of my game to better myself for the next tournament. I soon started to take the good things out of my rounds and turn the bad days into positives. Being that the game is mostly a mental game, I would rather learn from my mistakes then to live them. With all this preparation and dedication, my end result of summer was fantastic! I lowered my scoring average and have a better look at the game. Playing better made me enjoy golf even more and now I cherish all that struggle I had in the past for two reasons. One, it made for a memorable occasion. And two, it paid off! For all you inspiring talent out there, I would like you to imagine yourself in the future. Would you rather choose the path that led to success? Or choose the lackadaisical road that led nothing? At the end of the day, golf is still a game and you should do whatever makes you feel happy. But I know for me, hard work and good end results make me the happiest.

DEWAR’S unique double-aging process is the extra step we take to give DEWAR’S 12 Year Old, DEWAR’S 18 Year Old and DEWAR’S SIGNATURE their remarkable smoothness and depth of character. Pioneered over 100 years ago, it’s a process that involves returning the newly made blend – the point at which most whisky makers would simply bottle it up – back to vintage oak casks to mature for an extended period of time. This extra step creates a smoother blend, with a long, lingering finish.

DEWAR'S Old Fashioned 1 part Dewar’s 18 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky 1 teaspoon sugar 2 dashes bitters 2 orange slices 2 maraschino cherries Water or soda In the bottom of a rocks glass, carefully muddle the sugar, bitters, 1 orange slice, 1 cherry and a splash of water or soda. Remove the orange rind and add Dewar’s and ice. Garnish with the remaining orange slice and cherry.

DEWAR'S 12 Year Old "On The Rocks" Dewar’s 12 Year Old A few cubes of ice Release the fruity honeyaromas of DEWAR’S 12 Year Old by adding a few cubes of ice.

DEWAR'S Smash 2 parts Dewar’s White Label Blended Scotch Whisky 1–2 mixing spoons granulated sugar 2 wedges of lemon 3–4 fresh mint sprigs seltzer Muddle the lemon, fresh mint leaves and sugar in the bottom of a mixing glass. Add DEWAR’S WHITE LABEL, shake and strain into a collins glass filled with crushed ice. Top with seltzer and garnish with fresh mint leaves.

Apothic 2010 Red Blend and 2011 White

grip it & sip it

ÂŽ

Apothic is a true original. Named for a mysterious place, Apotheca, where vintners stored their most coveted concoctions in 13th century Europe, Apothic blends fuse Old World intrigue with modern sophistication. Winemaker Boyd Morrison lets the character and flavor of each varietal guide the shape of his wines. Apothic offers two enchanting blends that are bold in style and taste: Apothic Red and Apothic White.

Apothic Red: Apothic Red is bold and enchanting, as it captures the dark fruit characteristics of Syrah and the spicy nuances of Zinfandel. These flavors blend well with the elegant blackberry and black cherry characteristics of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The wine is further enhanced by undertones of mocha and vanilla to create a smooth, velvety finish.

Apothic White: Our Apothic 2011White is an approachable blend that combines three full-bodied varietals of Chardonnay, Riesling and Moscato to create a luscious wine in the bold style of Apothic. The intense flavors of peach, juicy pineapple, honey and vanilla spice make this blend smooth and unforgettable.

Viticulture Notes: The 2011California grape harvest was lighter and later than normal with flavors developing at lower sugar levels, which led to more flavorful, elegant wines. late winter and early spring had frequent rain, which delayed bloom and fruit set, decreasing the overall crop load. A generally cool summer and early autumn rains prolonged the growing season and pushed back harvest in most areas.

Winemaking Notes: The grapes for our 2011Apothic White were harvested at night to ensure that they were cool when they arrived at the winery for pressing. Prior to fermentation, the juice was separated from solids by racking or centrifugation to encourage clean fruit forward fermentations. Fermentation occurred in upright tanks at cool temperatures to retain the varieties' natural aro-

South Florida Shooting Club Great Compliment to Golf Clubs

Seminole Region Administrator Lisa Dugan with Ashley McCafferty of Royal Palm Yacht Club

Jennifer Jolly, CCM

Local Port St Lucie Attorney Lara Donlon

Florida Club Managers Seminole Ladies

This month the Seminole Region of the Florida Club Managers Association had their business and education meeting in another type of private club … the South Florida Shooting Club in Palm City, Florida. Naturally we spend a lot of time talking about golf … with initiatives like “Get Golf Ready”, “Tee It Forward” and “Golf 2.0” we continue to look for ways to engage more people into the game of golf while insuring our aging memberships continue to get enjoyment out of the game. Interestingly, local golf clubs here in the Palm City area such as Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club and Tesoro as well as Palm Beach clubs Bath & Tennis, Palm Beach Yacht Club and Sailfish Club members are taking the stance that more is not necessarily better. Instead they are supplementing their weekly regime with a combination of golf and shooting. Shooting engages and strengthens core muscles, essential for stability and a solid swing on the golf course. Your core muscles generate 46

a significant amount of power during a golf swing — more than your arms. During a golf swing, your core muscles help you create the angular momentum and reactive power that contribute to club acceleration. Some core muscles help propel your club, while others brake your movements. That said, four and half hours in the Florida sun every day can take its toll on aging memberships. Utilizing a combination of outdoor activities that complement each other makes both sports more enjoyable. South Florida Shooting Club President, Course Designer and World Renowned Sporting Clays Champion Doug Vine, says the club continues to grow. “You’d be surprised at the wide cross section of parents, children and grandparents that are taking up the sport.” Men, women and children of all walks of life who believe in safe gun handling, take pride in shooting well and enjoy skeet shooting with friends and family. Many shooters enjoy competing with themselves and others for prizes,

self-satisfaction and self-achievement. Tournaments are divided into many different classes, so shooters will be competing against others of equal ability. The education at the club was as diverse as the location. Palm Beach Yacht Club Operations Manager Michael Nadeau put together a spectacular event with local Attorney Lara Donlon starting the day with Employment Law, then three hours of shooting instruction and practice, culminating in a Beef Selection presentation by Doug Bush of Bush Brothers and a Wine Industry Trends discussion and tasting with Southern Wine & Spirits. The South Florida Shooting Club, located in Palm City, Florida, is situated on 650 acres providing a natural rustic setting for outdoor clay pigeon shooting. The Club features 8 lighted Trap Fields, 3 fully automated Sporting Clays Courses, 2 Skeet Fields, 5 Stands, FITASC Parcours and a fully automated ZZ Ring. Both challenging and fun, the fields meet the needs of all levels of shooters. Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

11 NJ Caddies March With Bags to Ground Zero in Memory of Fallen Golfers

By W. L. Bill Allen, Jr. Director, NJSportsAction.NET

Photos by W.L. Bill Allen, Jr.

Jimmy Ski and Brian Baker lead the way into the Brick City of Newark.

Eleven New Jersey caddies are about to be led down the driveway by the Shillelagh Club bagpipers.

Somehow, the number of participants seemed apropos. Last year, there were nine. This year there were 11 caddies from Essex County NJ area golf courses who made the journey from the Shillelagh Club in West Orange, NJ, to the World Trade Center on the 11th anniversary of 9-11, as they marched -each carrying two full sets of golf bags- in memory of the members of local golf and country clubs who were killed in the terrorist attacks. It all started five years ago when, driven by a mix of grief, respect and anger, two good friends who happened to be a part of the golf world: Greg Corbo of Roseland and Kenny Cooke of West Orange, decided to make a statement the best way they knew how. Cooke, the Caddie Master at Essex County Country Club (ECCC, 1887), and Corbo, a certified golf instructor and certified professional caddie, personally knew or knew of myriad members of area clubs who were lost on September 11, 2001, and came up with a way to help keep their memories alive. Since the Montclair/West Orange area is a mecca for golf courses, including Upper Montclair, Montclair, Essex County, Francis Byrne, Essex Fells, Rock Spring, 50

Crestmont, Greenbrook and Mountain Ridge, the two decided to walk from the Shillelagh Club, which is right across the street from Essex County Country Club, the oldest golf course in New Jersey, to Penn Station in Newark, take the PATH train to Ground Zero, join the crowd at the remembrance activities and then walk down to Battery Park. There, they wrote names of some of those who were murdered on 9-11 on golf balls and then

hit those balls into the Hudson Bay to immortalize them. Since that original march five years ago, the effort has grown significantly. In fact, the last two years have seen what is now a fairly large group of caddies being led down the Shillelagh Club’s long driveway by bagpipers, as the dedicated Jersey loopers started their sojourn, which totals more than a score of miles on the day. What is called the “Be A Hero For Zero” march, has its own Facebook page and is attracting unprecedented attention, both locally and nationally.

5-Live Crew: The boys, in full stride moving through the streets of the Ironbound section in Newark, NJ. This was about 13-15 miles into the walk.

Baker Company: Upper Montclair caddie Sean Baker flag carries the Red, White and Blue down the driveway in all smiles. Sean’s older brother, Brian is to his left in the PGA New Jersey Section bib. Brian Baker has been caddying on and off for 25 years. His career began at Preakness Hills in Wayne. He now loops at Upper Montclair with his brother Sean.

Sean Baker leading the charge into Ground Zero Last year, the caddies were escorted through the Brick City by several Newark Police cars. This year, they were invited into the non-public areas of Ground Zero by high-level NYPD officials for a private tour, a huge honor. “It was a bit overwhelming to be invited into the site,” said Cooke. “The guys were honored and took it very seriously. We all collected some memorabilia, bracelets and shirts to remember the historical importance of this day. We were honored and I consider myself part of that family now.” Each of the Caddies also carried not one, but two, full golf bags, a total of about 6070 pounds, during the entire trip, because, “That›s just what caddies do, were carry the luggage,” Corbo laughed of the somewhat grueling endeavor. “When I started this walk with Kenny Cooke back in 2008, this year’s version was exactly what I envisioned – a group of caddies marching together on the concrete to remember a day which forever changed the world we live in,” expounded Corbo, who served as sports editor of the Montclair Times for three years shortly Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 4

after 9-11 and, more recently, spent a year as the sports coordinator for The Progress newspaper in Caldwell. “These past two years, our numbers have grown substantially. I think that may be because this was the tenth and 11th anniversary of the attacks and Bin Laden has finally been extinguished and those things have definitely provided a little extra motivation to for us to get in there and do what we do. In many respects, this walk symbolizes anti-terrorism, as well, even though the sad fact is that it will never go away completely. “We went, we walked and never forgot why,” said Corbo. “Walking on concrete is a bit more strenuous than doing the same on a golf course and I know there will be a few sore backs, blisters and few shin splints between the guys… but so what!” Joining Corbo (ECCC, Upper Montclair Country Club, Lancaster Country Club) and Cooke (ECCC) for the 2012 walk were Montclair dweller John DePasquale, Jr. (Montclair Golf Club), Jimmy Ski of Clifton (UMCC), Darnell Wilson of West Orange (ECCC) Christopher Kiefer of Clifton (UMCC), brothers Brian and Sean Baker of Wayne (UMCC), and Nick Cilli and Jesse Wakins of Little Falls (UMCC). This year›s walk was done in memory of two former Rock Spring Club members: Michael Finnegan and John Murray. “The original idea was to recruit caddies from other clubs in New Jersey or the Tri-State area where members were lost,” said Corbo. “Off the top of my head I know that members were lost from the Upper Montclair, Montclair, Rock Spring, Greenbrook and Ridgewood.” “We have had at least three and as many as 11 caddies each year which is exciting. Now, we are going to begin actively recruiting for next year’s walk. In three to

Essex County Caddie Master Ken Cooke and Be A Hero For Zero Founder Greg Corbo prepare themselves for the 25-mile trek into Ground Zero on the morning of September 11, 2012. Cooke and Corbo have been making the walk in for the past five years. In 2008 and 2009, the two walked alone. Now the group is up to 11 strong and many more commitments have been made for 2013. Cooke and Corbo first met in 1993 at the Montclair Golf Club and have been close friends ever since. Montclair Golf Club lost Stephen Roach in the 2001 attacks. MGC proceeded to close the course that day after it learned a member had perished. Corbo and Cooke both caddied for “Roachie” on a regular basis.

five years, I envision 25-50 guys coming in with us, the more the merrier.” “We›d also like to thank this year’s sponsors: River Street Ideal Lease, Michael Anthony Jewelers, corbosport.com, Williams-Forrest and NJSportAction.NET,” Corbo emphasized, adding, «In addition, both the Professional Caddies Association of America (PCA) and Florida Golf Central Magazine of Orlando (FGCM) have reached out to me and requested yearly sponsorship which excites us greatly. “Lots of people are catching wind of what we do and becoming very supportive.” Corbo is a 1999 graduate of PCA and was the managing editor of FGCM for a time after he was graduated from the San Diego Golf Academy of the South. Be A Hero For Zero is already looking forward to next year’s walk. “We go in and we get it done and I will continue this until I physically can’t do it anymore, and that’s all there is to it.” smiled Cooke. CME Group Titleholders Brings the LPGA Back to Naples Having been missed since 2001, The CME Group Titleholders will bring thrilling competition and excitement back to the Naples area as the LPGA season concludes in grand fashion, with the ladies playing for one of the largest purses on tour. The event gathers the three best finishers from each LPGA Tour stop in a culminating championship to end the LPGA season and crown the Tour’s year-long champion. Teeing off November 15-18 at TwinEagles Golf and Country Club, the community could not be more ready to have the best women’s golfers in the world back in town. The field of competitors will boast the world’s best female players at what is sure to become one of the most renowned courses in the area – The Eagle. This course was completely overhauled by acclaimed architect Steve Smyers and is truly unlike any other in the region. Smyers crafted a course that incorporates many of the elements from the “Golden Age of Architecture,” the period of construction prior to 1940 when iconic courses such as Pebble Beach, Bethpage Black and Augusta National were all built. Course features include thumbprint greens often well-protected with strategically placed bunkers and a focus on highlighting the natural landscape throughout all 18 holes. “Golf fans in Naples are so great and supportive, and we’re really excited to bring LPGA action back to the area,”

Hee Young Park, 2011 Champion

Eagle Course Hole #4 52

Tournament Director Lesley Baker said. “The Eagle is one of the best new courses in the country, providing a unique and incredible experience for both players and fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to come out and see it.” The Eagle course will prove to be a good test for the world’s best golfers when they converge on the course in November. Highlights from the field include LPGA Tour standouts and favorites, such as top-ranked American Stacy Lewis, Florida native Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer and Yani Tseng. Last year, Hee Young Park won the inaugural event and claimed the second-largest winning prize on the LPGA Tour, $500,000. Park shot a nine-under-par to claim a two-stroke victory over Sandra Gal and Creamer. Global Golf Cup and Stats Fore Cash competitions created lots of excitement and interest from all the players. In fact, The total purse for our Section Championship was almost $48,000! Thank you to our supporting partners: The PGA TOUR, Antigua for the shirts and Golfer’s Guide! Thank you to Glen Murray and his entire staff of the Ritz-Carlton Members Club for their exceptional service. The course was in fabulous condition and Mother Nature cooperated nicely! Thank you to our PGCC volunteers who make us look good! They are always on time and work hard. Once again, the season wrapped up with a fabulous venue and we’re already planning and looking forward to next year! Thank you to all who took the time to compete. It was

so cool to see old friendships rekindled and new one’s sparked. Sure, it’s about competing and playing the best you can play, but in these hectic times, it’s also about getting away to tee it with friends and fellow PGA Professionals. Stan Cooke is back! A solid performance at Reunion with his score of 6 under for the two days was enough to hold off Senior Player of the Year Freddy Gibson, Golf Ed, for the Senior PNC title. 7 players advanced to the 24th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Mercedes-Benz USA Oct. 11–14 at Crieghton Farms – Aldie, Va. and River Creek Club - Leesburg, Va. The field was challenged by the Watson Course at Reunion and it was fun to see that these guys can still play! Thank you to Kevin Baker and Reunion Resort for hosting again. We always look forward to their great tracks and friendly service. Our qualifiers: Stan Cooke, Golden Hills Golf & Turf, Freddy Gibson, Golf Ed, Mo Guttman, Jim Slattery, Belleair CC, Matt Mitchell, Downs Golf & Practice, Bill Sellers, CC of Orlando, and Mike Smith. The Northern Chapter Championship was postponed due to Tropical Storm Isaac. It was finally played on Sept. 10-11 at Marsh Creek. This year’s Northern Chapter Champion is Charles Raulerson, County Club of Orange Park. He finished at even par at Marsh Creek CC.

Rod Perry, Crane Lakes, “killed two birds with one stone” with his victory at the NFPGA Section Championship. His final 54 hole total of -12 was impressive. Rod’s Section Championship victory earned him a spot in the Bay Hill Invitational, courtesy of Mr. Palmer! He also clinched the Player of the Year honors which earned him a spot in the CMN Classic at Disney this Fall! Rod capped off an exceptional season of competition highlighted by his T2 finish at the National PNC along with playing in the PGA Championship. He is the “man to beat” right now! Congratulations Rod! Hats off to Clint Avret, Timuquana CC, for his stellar play to keep the pressure on Rod and a 9 under finish! David Hronek, Plantation Golf & CC along with Donny Lee from Core Golf Academy finished T3 with their solid play at 6 under. Our Senior Champion is Jim Slattery, Belleair CC who defeated Mike Smith from Titusville in sudden death! Both finished at 3 over from the back tees of the regular division. Alex Romanoff, Habitat GC, finished third at +4. Our Legends Division champion is Bob Dickson, whose PGA TOUR experience lifted him to an even par total. He’s still got game! Fred Bender, Pasadena Hill Golf, finished second at +6. A special Thank You to our presenting partner, Steve Sponder and Global Golf Sales! This year’s Dream 18, 54

Steve Morris, NFPGA Tournament Director took a break from directing tournaments to direct a tournament! He volunteered to help coordinate the State Special Olympics Golf Tournament at Orange Lake Resort. 168 athletes from around the state gathered to compete in skills competitions, 9 & 18 hole alternate shot formats, and 9 & 18 stroke play competitions. As always, it is enlightening to see how much the game and competition means to such special

people. There were smiles, high fives and lots of fun! Golf is truly the game of a lifetime and hats off to the staff and all of the volunteers who made this such a special weekend for the athletes! It’s a big production and worth the effort. It was an honor to have the PGA “in the house” to give back to the game we love. The North Florida Section heeded the call to action to support Patriot Golf Day over Labor Day weekend. Thousands of dollars were raised for the Folds of

Honor Foundation to support our troops and their families in time of need. The Northern Chapter, who inspired the red shirt and Freedom Friday, have set the bar high for donations. It appears they will raise over $15,000 for this great cause. World Golf Village King & Bear gathered almost $2500 to lead all donating clubs. Thank you to all NFPGA Members and clubs for participating. Together we can make a difference and make sure nobody gets left behind!

NFPGA Players Punch Their Tickets to 2013 PNC Rod Perry, Crane Lakes, and six other players punched their tickets to the 2013 PGA Professional National Championship. Rod was exempt to due to his T2 finish at this year’s PNC. The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort not only provided an incredible backdrop for the competition but it challenged our best, culminating with a playoff for the title at even par over 36 holes! Rod made the big move on day 2, with 8 birdies (9 including the playoff birdie) to catch defending champion David Hronek, Plantation Golf & CC. Donny Lee, Orange County National, was in it down the stretch and finished the Championship at one over. Charles Raulerson, Country Club of Orange Park, shot 2 under on day two for a 2 over total to secure his spot. Also advancing to the 2013 PNC were Jim Garrison, Temple Terrace, and Shawn Gordon, Emerald Greens, both at 2 over. Tom Stecker, St. Johns Golf Club, locked down the final exemption at 4 over. First alternate went to Mark Rummings, David Leadbetter Golf Academy, second alternate was Mike Keymont, Eastwood, who defeated David Damesworth, Orange Tree GC, in sudden death duel. David is our third alternate. There are many people to thank for their contributions and efforts to make this year’s PNC perhaps the best ever! Thank you

our presenting and supporting partners. Thank you to Steve Sponder and Global Golf. Thank you host professional Brad Hauer and the entire staff at Hammock Beach Resort! The friendliest staff in the land! The service and conditions were simply exceptional! We can’t forget our PGCC volunteers who make us look good by volunteering their time to help with the contests and operations. Thank you to all the players who took the time and shared their passion to compete! Next time you need to get away for a weekend or a week, you need to put Hammock Beach Resort at the top of your list! It’s truly a special place you’ll find hard to leave. Bryan Snyder Hangs On to Win the NFPGA Assistant Championship. Bryan Snyder, Ritz Carlton Members Club held off David Hronek, Plantation Golf & CC, Nathan McMullen, Gainesville CC, and Tyler Hitchcock, Walt Disney World to win the NFPGA Assistant Championship at 1 under, 143. Bryan’s first round 69 gave him the edge he needed for the one stroke victory. David shot 74, 70, as did Nathan and Tyler shot 72, 72 to all finish at even par 144. Tyler Hitchcock was exempt into the PGA Assistant Championship due to his second place finish last year. It was back out on the course for sudden death between David and Nathan for the final spot in this year’s

PGA Assistant Championship. Nathan earned the last spot with a clutch putt. David Hronek is our first alternate, Stephen Rourke, Lake Nona is second alternate and Kevin Crawford, Bay Hill is third alternate. Good luck Bryan, Nathan and Tyler in our national championship! this year! Southern Dunes was a great challenge and the players all enjoyed their rounds. Thank you National Car Rental and Cobra Puma Golf for being our partners! Rod Perry, Crane Lakes, kept our Section in suspense in his quest to compete at the highest level in the 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. Rod played solid on Thursday and was in position to make the cut until the winds roared in on Friday! Rod commented that Friday was the hardest round of golf he’s ever played! Although he missed the cut, we’re all proud of his great playing accomplishment that most PGA Professionals can only dream of. Knowing how good a player Rod is, it humbles you to realize just how good PGA TOUR players really are… Congratulations to our NFPGA Members, competing with the best in the State in The 2012 Florida Open. Ironically, these three teams all finished tied for first last year! Last year, there was a sudden death playoff, but due to the weather delay, darkness prevented a playoff. It was decided that the low teams will share the title in 2012. They all shot 61 which

was a shot better than last year! Once again, The Palmer Legends served up a fabulous lunch and buffet after for our pros and supers! The service was the usual exceptional! The golf course was perfect! It really was a “super” day! The winning teams were: Chris DeBusk and Jeff Morris, Havana CC, The Villages. Eddie Frye and Gary Newcomb, Big Cypress. The Emerald Dunes Club Emerges from a Significant Master Renovation The Emerald Dunes Club invited Tom Fazio, the course’s original designer, back in 2011 and asked him to polish this jewel to full luster. The result of Fazio’s Golf Course Master Plan is a stunning refinement of this much heralded course that opened in 1990. It was listed as one of the best 100 courses in the U.S. and rated in the top five of all Florida clubs. Fazio personally managed the extensive multi-million dollar renovations recommended to vault the private Emerald Dunes Club into the exclusive category as one of the very best courses in the country. New championship back tees were added, other tees were expanded or redesigned, fairways were widened on several holes, some new greens were created and others reshaped, bunkers were added to increase their number to over 100, and two holes were reconfigured. A new state-of-the-art irrigation system will ensure that the course conditions remain consistent and visually stimulating. “Tom Fazio took the gem of his original design and perfected it,” 60

stated Executive Vice President Ken Green. “We’ve created a sanctuary for golfers who appreciate a pure golf experience that’s challenging yet fun to play on a daily basis. While we’ve added length for scratch golfers, the course remains playable for all skill levels. Also, the new world-class Tom Fazio Short Game Area, along with the two-bay indoor Golf Learning Center, generously complements the club’s variety of practice facilities and game improvement amenities that rival any in Florida, if not the nation.” Few clubs offer the extensive practice facilities found at Emerald Dunes.

The eight-acre, 310-yard double-sided driving range includes more than 28,000 square feet of tee surface. This exceptional game improvement arena also provides five target greens, each framed with shallow sand bunkers, four mini chipping target greens and a USGA regulation putting green. The separate Tom Fazio Short Game Area includes a 19th hole par 3 that plays from 85 to 135 yards. Two dedicated target greens, a chipping green and an additional putting green, all built to USGA specifications with identical turf conditions as the golf course. dunes, contoured mounds and around some 60 acres of lakes snaking alongside fairways and greens. A signature 50-foot high unique dune with a waterfall at the heart of the layout, and where several holes converge, is a distinctive feature that offers panoramic views of the course from the 11th and 18th tees. Remarkably, tranquil Emerald Dunes is just minutes from Palm Beach and the surrounding community. Lee Rinker, a veteran PGA TOUR pro who now competes on the Champions Tour, is the club’s Director of Golf. For further information about The Emerald Dunes Club contact Lesley Rey (561) 687-1700, lrey@emeralddunesclub.com or visit www. emeralddunesclub.com. bunker complete the vast practice amenities available for members to hone their short game skills. A total investment of approximately $15 million dollars was made by Emerald Dunes’ ownership to upgrade the course and refine the clubhouse. Attractive landscaping also was a priority and an astonishing 2,000 towering mature palms and trees were planted around the course’s perimeter to screen any visible outside architecture and to serve as privacy buffers. A noteworthy aesthetic improvement was the replacement of old cart paths with crushed shell paths and pavers that seamlessly complement the overall natural look and feel of the golf environment. Terraces with a Tuscan influence and a comfortable verandah overlooking the Tom Fazio Short Game Area and 18th green add to the relaxed atmosphere encouraged at Emerald Dunes. The end result is a placid haven for a round of golf, secluded practice time or socializing. “Emerald Dunes has always been one of my favorite courses and I was pleased to be invited back to make some strategic enhancements to one of the most highly regarded clubs in Florida,” said Tom Fazio. “Emerald Dunes is truly a gem and with the recent improvements it’s an even more dazzling jewel. Although it’s hard to imagine, we’ve upgraded the quality of the overall golf experience by ten-fold. With the addition of soft shell paths, native vegetation and an expansive short game area, the dream keeps getting better. To take something that originally was so well received and make it substantially superior is a special achievement.” Today, following the dedicated work on all aspects of the golf club lifestyle, Emerald Dunes Club is a traditional golfer’s retreat whose course provides members with a memorable test of skills over a variety of spellbinding holes that weave subtly through

Robby Shelton wins The AJGA Junior Players Championship with a clutch putt on the final hole The TPC Sawgrass Stadium course seems to be forever destined as golf’s thriller maker. The pros as well as the world’s best amateurs seem to be forced to wait until they reach the 18th green on the last day to determine a champion. This year’s championship filled the bill with a dramatic final putt on #18 for Robby Shelton of Wilmer, AL to nail down his victory. The best under-18 players in the world, representing 22 states and 19 countries, converged at The Stadium course for a 3 day test of every club in their bag. Top ranked Jim Liu, already a member of the junior Ryder Cup team, was the odds-on favorite. He already had knocked on the door of first place in last year’s event. Fellow 2012 junior Ryder Cupper

Ready to rumble on the final day, Liu, Dalke and Shelton and defending champion Gavin Hall was a heavy favorite as well. With the course set up exactly as The PLAYERS, Jim Liu surprised no one taking a first round lead

Winner Robby Shelton

#1 Polo ranking Jim Liu Defending champ Gavin Hall with Shelton at 2 under par. This would turn out to be a three-day head to head battle while defending champ, Gavin Hall struggled throughout the day. The venue was changed over to the Valley Course on Day 2 to mix up the challenges a little. The players did the mixing as they picked apart the Valley Course with dozens of 65’s-67’s posted. In spite of the turkey shoot by most of the field, Liu and 64

Shelton remained in the lead to head for the final day showdown. On the final day, Shelton continued his steady par barrage to put pressure on Liu, while Liu had his troubles on the front nine. Shelton gained a threehole cushion at the turn. Brad Dalke of McKinney, TX had been hanging around Shelton all day and then caught fire on the back nine with three birdies at 10, 11 and 13. Liu made some big noise with a 60’ bomb for eagle on 16 letting Shelton know he was still around. Game on. Then it got exciting as Shelton’s lead disappeared while finding the water on #17 leaving #18, as usual, as the hole that would determine the winner. Dalke and Shelton were tied and Liu just behind them. Dalke bogied #18, Liu didn’t get a needed birdie, while Shelton flew the green, chipped to 10 feet, and then poured in the pressure putt for par and the win. Anti-Aging Breakthrough!

Betterthan

Surgery?

“Who would have thought that this ‘weird’ combination of cellulite lasers with skin tightening lasers would be able to revival a $17k face lift!”

In

a remarkable turn of events, arguably one of the strangest in the history of Florida aesthetics,

women all across Orlando are turning to a specialist named Angel Rodriguez instead of Botox® or plastic surgery to get rid of wrinkles, loose skin, dark circles under the eyes, and other facial imperfections. “It’s the only guaranteed way to look 10-15 years younger without needles or knives,” Rodriguez boasts. And if consumer response is any indication of his effectiveness, just try booking an appointment. It's not unusual to have to schedule three months in advance to see him. Has everyone gone crazy? Well . . . not really. Scientific Breakthrough or Beginners Luck? It all begins with the Syneron brand of laser-like technology (utilized by Rodriguez), which have been proven to be “the only combined energy platform that effectively treats wrinkles, skin laxity, age spots, pigmentation, and acne” in scientific clinical studies with full FDA approval. However that's just the beginning . . . Rodriguez’s results are so accelerated that a representative from Syneron has flat out said that he has seen nothing like them in his ten years in the industry and has offered to buy his “before and after” pictures to promote the company. Dr. Destephens, an anti-aging specialist and internal medicine doctor, has seen Rodriguez’s work first hand and has actually gone “under the laser” himself. “Angel has developed his own unique set of protocols that are an evolution of Syneron technology,” says Dr. Destephens. “He has been able to get far better results than even what the manufacturer advertises because he has tweaked and optimized the protocols. That's why so many people started calling it 'The Angelic Lift.'” And the Syneron laser technology by it’s own merits is nothing to sneeze at for treating wrinkles and cinching up loose skin. Just look at all the press coverage it's been getting recently: It's been on Rachel Ray, The Doctors, Dr.

Phil, and famously on Keeping Up with the Kardashians for treating Kim’s cellulite, as well as dozens of other media outlets. But when Rodriguez got his hand on this technology, he stumbled onto something totally unique and rare . . . Beginners Luck Strikes Again! Then on February 24th, 2007, at a meeting of world renowned plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and aesthetic MDs, he had a bit of luck . . . maybe it was insight. Rodriguez was in a seminar learning under one of the master practitioners of the Syneron laser company who has celebrity clients around the world. He was demonstrating how when you combine cellulite reduction lasers with wrinkle reduction, unlikely results start to happen. . . Rodriguez saw that the combination of different technologies was key to getting pronounced results faster, and immediately started experimenting on himself. “I was too naive to limit my expectations about what was possible non-invasively, so I kept trying new things,” he says. What He Found Was Wildly Exciting . . . "The first thing I was able to do was remove a scar from my neck that had been plaguing me since early childhood," he says. "If you come to my office, I'll show you the pictures." By combining laser modalities in very specific ways, he was able to shrink loose skin and fat, dissolve crows feet, and reduce wrinkles and fine lines far better than anyone thought was possible non-invasively.

He started applying what he was learning to his practice and amazing things started to happen . . . Tu m m y Tu c k W i t h o u t Surgery! Rodriguez found that by combining cellulite lasers with skin tightening lasers, he could actually get near tummy tuck results without surgery! Max, who came all the way from Italy for this, writes, “To be able to look at yourself naked in the mirror, and see a tight, ten-year younger version of yourself without a massive ‘smile scar’ running across your belly is worth it for twice the price of plastic surgery!” (See video and pictures at www.NoCutTuck.com).

Turkey Neck Reduction Without Surgery! Beverly from Gainesville writes: “I thought about getting a Lifestyle Lift,” she says, “for the loose flesh under my neck. When I read all the horror stories associated with it there was no way I was going to try that. Thanks to Angel, I was able to get a very natural and feminine looking facelift without surgery, and without any foreign bodies inserted into my face. An added bonus that I didn’t expect but turned out wonderfully was my eyelids were lifted and the bags and wrinkles underneath were reduced! ”

The Italian Open Gives Kids The World More than 100 members of Shadow Wood Country Club participated in the club’s Italian Open golf tournament, dinner and auction. Launched in 2002, the Italian Open was hosted on the South Course and raised more than $7,000 for the first-time beneficiary, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. Event organizers donated 100 percent of funds raised during the member-sponsored event to help grant the wishes of terminally ill children for once-in-a-lifetime trips. The auction generated a significant portion of the proceeds and included two official New York Giants helmets and a full set of golf clubs. Jesus, the first grantee, wished to visit the Walt Disney World Resort with his family. They were given the royal treatment during their stay at “Give the Kids the World Village,” along with visits at Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Universal Studios. “Granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions enriches the human experience with hope, strength and joy,” said Lesley Colantonio, senior special events coordinator with Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. Italian Open committee members included Angelo Dabiero, Dr. Ron Repice, Joe Gallo and Michael Iacampo, who received a plaque with images of Jesus’ favorite moments during his 66

Disney World visit. “The committee and all our members were honored to be part of making a wish come true and look forward to granting more wishes,” said Danita Osborn, director of membership for Shadow Wood Country Club. Sponsors included Wells Fargo Advisors, Coconut Point Ford, Golf Guys, Marcella’s, Sweet Bay Super Market and Pinch a Penny, along with Shadow Wood Country Club PGA professionals. “The support of our sponsors and golf pros helped ensure the event was a huge success,” said Osborn. Each year, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida, the fourth-largest wish-granting chapter in the world, fulfills the wishes of more than 500 children in 13 South Florida counties. With the average cost of a wish being $5,000, the organization relies on fundraisers, corporate support and donations from the public to help these children and their families. For more information, call the Make-AWish Foundation at 954-967-WISH or log on to www.sfla.wish.org. Shadow Wood, located within The

Brooks master-planned community, offers a limited number of nonrefundable equity Golf, Executive, Sports, and Clubhouse Memberships for both residents and non-residents. Executive Memberships are reserved for members under age 56 and offer unrestricted play on the three courses, summertime reciprocals at area clubs, full use of Shadow Wood’s golf facilities, including practice areas and the Shadow Wood Golf Academy, and social and dining privileges at both clubhouses. The financially sound club offers members three distinctly different championship golf courses, including Shadow Wood North and South designed by Bob Cupp and the Arthur Hills-designed course at Shadow Wood Preserve. Members also enjoy a ninecourt tennis complex, 30,000-squarefoot Shadow Wood clubhouse currently undergoing a $4.8 million renovation and a 16,000-square-foot clubhouse at Shadow Wood Preserve. Located at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Coconut Road, more than half of Shadow Wood’s 2,532 acres are open space, with 416 acres of undeveloped forest and freshwater wetlands and 878 acres set aside for recreation, open areas, buffers and lakes. Faster, Smoother Greens and Newly Renovated Lodge Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge opened its Crooked Cat championship golf course with faster, smoother greens after a three-month renovation effort with the widelyacclaimed Champions Bermuda Ultra Dwarf Turf. Tano Malentin, general manager at Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge, said the renovated greens are worth the wait. “Ultra Dwarf Bermuda turf is well known in golfing circles for incredible ball roll and quick speed,” Malentin said. “We used the same turf on our

Panther Lake golf course last year with amazing success. People still talk about the difference,” he said. Malentin said Orange County National also recently completed major renovations of its Lodge; including all new furniture and

beddings as well as some interior design improvements. The Lodge is an important amenity. Besides local golfers, Orange County National accommodates thousands of tourists annually who visit the resort-style golf retreat to improve their game or just to get away for a while. “We now feature two of the finest championship golf courses in Florida, a nine-hole short course, a wide choice of onsite instruction schools and the largest driving range and practice facility in America, all at one location,” Malentin said.

➎ Fila Golf The heritage sportswear brand Fila Golf collection focuses on good-for-you styles, including eco-friendly and UV protecting, and offers designs inspired by Bahamian sunrise and sunsets. The latter is reflected in the new colors - Sky Blue and Purple - and additions of color combinations of shots of bright hues and neutrals. Vintage design touches like mesh rolled shoulders for men and keyhole and sweetheart necklines for women all boast the brand’s signature athletic-enhancing designs. The Men’s Lexington Heather Polo (Madison Heather for Women) plays on the brand’s heritage designs by creating a new, softer vintage look with Raglan sleeves that emphasizes the new lines’ fabric combinations of textures with solids. Playing off 2012’s debut outerwear line, the Women’s Peak and Men’s Atlas Performance Jackets were designed to have a longer length and optimal water repellant and breathability. The key pieces in 2013 are Fila Golf’s long-sleeve polos that provide UV protection – the Women’s Newport Long Sleeve Polo and Men’s Bedford Long Sleeve Polo. www.shopfilagolf.com.
