Death by Boredom? 無聊會致命？
A new British study reveals2 that boredom could cause an early death. Researchers had 7,000 civil3 servants rate4 their level of boredom. Twenty-five years later, many of those who had complained about being bored had died of strokes5 or heart disease—40% more than those who had not reported boredom. Doctors recommend finding healthy outside interests to keep you happy and active for years to come. 社會萬象 SOCIETY
Taiwan Birth Rate Hits Record Low 台灣生育率全球最低 †
Taiwan’s total fertility rate has reached an all-time low, with only 191,310 children born last year. This is down 3.47% from 2008. Concerned government agencies 1 are offering incentives 2 like housing and child care subsidies 3 to encourage families to reproduce.4 While some say that the problem lies in Taiwanese women marrying later in life, the financial burden of raising children could be a big factor.

Bright Ideas Design Co. created the characters for the NPM using an ancient Chinese painting as inspiration.2 The Katz Fun cartoon is about a magical3 tiger, Katz, and the children who protect it from the powers of darkness. An estimated twenty-five million people in Taiwan and the US are expected to tune in4 for these cartoon adventures.

Toyota Recalls Leave Consumers Concerned 豐田汽車召回風波延燒 Toyota had a shaky2 start to 2010, recalling over eight million of its cars worldwide. In some cars, a buildup of friction3 causes the gas pedalh to stick, while in others it is the floor mats h that are the problem. People are upset about these faults, which have reportedly caused 815 crashes, 341 injuries, and nineteen deaths since 1999. Many feel that the recall has come far too late, as did the official apology4 from Toyota. Toyota then announced a recall of 311,000 Prius vehicles because of a brake h † 5 malfunction. While these recalls will cost the auto giant up to US$2 billion, the damage to Toyota’s reputation 6 may cost even more in the long run. Toyota president Akio Toyoda attended a congressional7 hearing in the United States where he answered questions from US lawmakers. The company now also faces a lawsuit.
