EQ† as Important as IQ? When measuring and preparing children for success in the future, many educators feel you can no longer rely on IQ tests as a gauge.1 While a high IQ can get you far in academics,2 it’s EQ—one’s emotional quotient—that creates successful leaders. In a recent study from the University of Illinois, researchers found that children who were receiving social and emotional training scored 10-11% higher on academic tests. With this in mind, some schools are already adding EQ classes to the curriculum3 in an effort to improve academic performance now and job success in the future.

Have you . . . what life is like . . .
q What is life like in the ocean? w Have you ever wondered that?
q What is life like in the ocean?
e what life is like in the ocean
Have you ever wondered [what life is like in the ocean]?
• Julie wants to know what time it is.

HEN
you see a dog drinking out of a
toilet, you probably think, “Eww, †
gross! ” In most people’s minds, the toilet is the dirtiest thing there is. However, the toilet is 05
surprisingly far down the list of filthiestu items. The 2009 Hygiene u in the Home Study found that kitchens are far dirtier than bathrooms. That cloth you use to wipe the counter1 or dry dishes is loaded with bacteria2

and mold, even if it looks clean. That goes for the kitchen faucet,3 too! Even dirtier than the kitchen are office keyboards. Experts say that an average4 keyboard has almost 4,000 germs5 per square inch. On the other hand, an office toilet seat has only about forty-nine per square inch. One possible reason for this is that toilets get cleaned regularly, unlike keyboards.
15
We live in a world of germs. Our body generally does a good job of keeping us safe, but it never hurts to clean up a bit. Focus your efforts in the kitchen and on things that are touched regularly, like cell phones, purses, and the mouse and keyboard of your computer. When it comes to germs, the toilet is the least of your † concerns!
