Beijing. Travelers will go to a traditional Tea House to experience the amazing traditional tea ceremony, visit Scenery Hill for a walk through the beautiful park and to view the rooftops of the Forbidden City, visit Tienamen Square, and see the home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties: The Forbidden City and Imperial Palace. Another day travelers will go to the surrounding countryside, to see some of the most beautiful and historic sites in China, including the Sacred Way (entrance to the burial grounds of the Ming Dynasty Tomb), and the Great Wall of China. healthbriefs Juggling Bumps Up Brainpower

C

an rhythmically tossing and catching balls in the air help grow the brain? Researchers from the Universität Regensburg, in Germany, after studying two dozen people using brain scans, say yes. Half were asked to learn to juggle; the others were given no special instructions. After three months, the brains of the jugglers had grown by 3 to 4 percent in the areas that process visual and motor information. The more skilled the jugglers became, the greater the brain growth. No change occurred in the non-juggling group. The research team says the study proves that new stimuli can alter the brain’s structure, not just its function.

hink twice before sipping soda or soup that comes in a can. A recent study by Harvard School of Public Health researchers discovered people who ate one serving of canned food daily for five days had significantly elevated levels of bisphenol-A (BPA), an endocrine disrupter sometimes found in plastic bottles, that also lines most food and drink cans. Studies have linked high urine levels of BPA to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and other health conditions. The spike in BPA levels recorded by the Harvard researchers was one of the highest seen in any study.

ften considered one of nature’s most perfect foods, eggs are an excellent source of protein, lipids, vitamins and minerals. Now, researchers at the University of Alberta, in Canada, have discovered that they also contain antioxidant properties that help in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Jianping Wu and his team of researchers at the university’s Department of Agricultural Food and Nutritional Science examined egg yolks produced by hens that were fed typical diets of either primarily wheat or corn. They found the yolks contained two amino acids; tryptophan and tyrosine, which have high antioxidant properties. The researchers found that two raw egg yolks offer almost twice as many antioxidant properties as one apple and about the same as half a serving (25 grams) of cranberries. When the eggs were fried or boiled, however, the beneficial properties were reduced by about half.

“It’s a big reduction, but it still leaves eggs equal to apples in their antioxidant value,” says Wu. In prior research, Wu found that egg proteins converted by digestive enzymes produced peptides that work in the same way as ACE inhibitors, prescription drugs used to reduce high blood pressure. That finding contradicted the notion that eggs increase high blood pressure because of their cholesterol content.

Concerned Citizens Public Demands GMO Food Labeling

A

campaign by Just Label It (JustLabelIt.org), a national coalition of 500 diverse organizations dedicated to the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GE) or genetically modified organism (GMO) foods, has united 1 million Americans of all political affiliations to demand that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require the practice.

“Pink slime, deadly melons, tainted turkeys and BPA in our soup have put us all on notice that what we eat and feed our families is critically important,” says Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group. “Americans overwhelmingly demand safety, transparency, and labeling of genetically engineered foods. It’s time for the FDA to come clean and restore public confidence in our food system.”

According to a political opinion survey conducted by The Mellman Group, pollster Mark Mellman explains, “Few topics other than motherhood and apple pie can muster more than 90 percent support, but labeling of GE foods is one of those few views that are held almost unanimously.”

No GMOs Stop Monsanto’s Attacks on Safe Food Laws

B

eyond continuing its well-documented opposition to genetically modified (GMO) labeling laws in order to protect its corporate interests, Monsanto has recently launched aggressive backdoor attacks on organic and non-GMO farmers and consumers. The corporation’s rider attached to the U.S. House of Representatives’ 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill would allow planting of new genetically engineered (GE) crops—even when courts rule that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved them illegally.

Now, Monsanto has slipped an even more dangerous provision, HR 872, into the house version of the Farm Bill. This so-called Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act would stop the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from reviewing new and expanded uses of pesticides (often caused by the introduction of herbicide-resistant GMO crops) and require the USDA to approve GE crops easier and faster.

Most GMO crops have been genetically engineered to withstand spraying with herbicides whose toxic ingredients remain in the plants and then enter the environment and food chain. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine links GMO foods with adverse health effects, and the President’s Cancer Panel Report advises against choosing foods grown with pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers.

Kiddie Crisis Why Children Need to Play in School

ime for play in most public kindergartens and elementary schools has dwindled to the vanishing point, replaced by lengthy lessons and standardized testing, according to three recent studies released by the nonprofit Alliance for Childhood. This group of advocates for children reports that classic play materials have largely disappeared from the 268 full-day conventional classrooms studied.

Authors of the research hail from the University of California, Los Angeles, Long Island University, and Sarah Lawrence College, in New York. In sounding the warning about the potential intellectual, social and physical repercussions of this widespread educational policy on childhood development, they also point to the academic success associated with play-based schooling in other countries. Students in China and Japan, often heralded for their aptitudes in science, technology, engineering and math, enjoy a play-based experiential approach to school until second grade. Children in Finland, who don’t begin formal schooling until age 6, consistently achieve the highest score on international exams.

Natural Sleep Aids for Kids

arious factors may cause a child’s sleeplessness, so before reaching for conventional drugs and sleep medications, parents may want to first consider changing a child’s bedtime routine. For example, try turning off the television and computer a couple of hours before bedtime to avoid overstimulation. It also helps to keep the child’s bedroom as calm and stress-free as possible; aromatherapy-scented pillows, soaps and lotions that work best include lavender, sage and chamomile.

Homeopathic remedies are another option; practitioners advise that such gentler medications are usually well tolerated by children. Choices include Kali phosphoricum for overstimulation, Magnesium phosphoricum to calm a child and to relieve colic, and Passiflora incarnata for a child who is too tired to go to sleep.

GET ALONG? Resolving conflict benefits mind and body.

“A

significant amount of wear-and-tear on the body comes from prolonged unresolved conflict—from not letting go, holding grudges and reliving situations over and over in your head,” says Raj Dhasi, a Torontobased conflict management consultant who specializes in the physiological impacts of conflict.

“But if conflict happens and my mindset is: ‘I can handle this.

We can work through this,’ that is phenomenally beneficial for the brain and body.”

Dhasi explains that when faced with any conflict—whether it’s an angry boss, disgruntled neighbor, political opponent or untidy teen in the house—our limbic system responds swiftly by igniting a cascade of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol and spiking our heart rate and blood pressure.

Meanwhile, our prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for

thinking things through and putting the brakes on emotional, irrational behaviors—begins to slowly light up.

The fundamental problem is that in the race to mount a response, the limbic system often wins, prompting us to greet conflict impulsively by raising our voice and saying things we later regret before our rational brain has time to step in.

On the flip side, many of us avoid conflict altogether, harboring discontent in such a way that we feel powerless or even threatened.

Making matters worse, our fight-or-flight response never quite goes away, says Gary Harper, author of The Joy of Conflict Resolution: Transforming Victims, Villains and Heroes in the Workplace and at Home.

“More people are stressed out by not dealing with a conflict than with dealing with it,” Harper observes. “If you deal with it in the moment, it allows you to let it go.”

Harper advises that one way to deal with conflict on the spot is to pause and give our more rational side a chance to arrive at a solution.

“Before you react, slow down, take a deep breath and listen to your inner dialogue,” he says. “In that deep breath, you might realize that you need five minutes [to consider a response].” If you still remain in attack mode, it might not be the best time to respond.

He adds that while no conflict should be avoided altogether, careful consideration might lead us to conclude that some battles aren’t worth fighting. Ask yourself: How important is this person to me?

“If neither is vital to you, save your energy for a better use. If the issue is not important, but the relationship is, it’s okay to accommodate or give in sometimes,” he says.

Be Direct and Follow-Up

Some conflicts are worth confronting. Then, Barbara Pachter, a business communications consultant and author of The Power of Positive Confrontation, offers what she calls the WAC approach for dealing with most cases of work and family conflict.

W: Ask yourself: What is really bothering me? “A lot of times, people don’t do this. They just say, ‘This person is a jerk,’ rather than specifying the problem.”

A: Ask them for a solution. “We often complain, but we don’t identify a solution,” she says. “Determine what is going to solve the problem for you and ask for it.”

C: Check in. “Turn it over to the other person and ask for their response. Inquire: ‘Is this possible?

All the while, stay curious about the other person’s perspective, suggests Harper. “We tend to see ourselves as the innocent victim, or we go into hero mode and tend to see the other person as the villain,” he says. “Of course, the other person is doing the same thing,

and that makes collaboration tough.”

Instead, ask sincere questions—and really listen.

Agree to Disagree

Terrie McCants, coordinator of the conflict resolution program at Kansas State University, notes that in some cases, especially when deeply held values such as politics or faith are involved, resolving conflict isn’t necessarily about reaching an agreement. “You cannot negotiate people’s values. Sometimes, these are things that people are willing to lie down and die for,” she says. “Instead, sometimes you might need to agree to disagree.”

In the end, whether the conflict is a minor disagreement at home, a workplace quarrel or a complicated political dispute, the process of properly working through it can leave both parties feeling stronger and improve their communities.

“Conflict forces you to problemsolve collaboratively and come up with options and elegant solutions,” McCants explains. “If handled well, it can add brilliant things to your life.”

Personal Growth and Abundant Life

M

ost of us live in a world of constant mental abstraction, conceptualization, and image-making. In this world of thought, we’re immersed in a continuous stream of mental noise and internal chatter. Much of this chatter has to do with pain from things that happened in the past, and dread of what might happen in the future.

The process of personal growth can be simplified to developing ways of being that enable us to live in the present, saying gentle good-byes to thoughts of the past, and choosing positive emotions and actions Now that will lead to the unfolding of a joyful, abundant future.

Step 1. Pay Attention.

“Focus is a process of diverting one’s scattered forces into one powerful channel.”—James Allen

One of the most essential and necessary parts of personal growth and spiritual development is the importance of staying 100% focused.

Think about it: when was the last time you paid attention to the taste of the food you were eating for lunch?

How often do you sit and eat a meal without distraction from what’s on television? Equally, how often do you go about your daily tasks distracted by feelings regarding your life, your relationship (or perhaps lack of one), needs, and desires, or just being fearful

about what might come to pass?

When your thinking subsides for a moment, a space of stillness arises within you, bringing a doorway into your being.

So make intimate friends with the present moment. When you don’t allow yourself to be possessed by your thoughts or distracted by your gadgets, you’ll find things around you gain a certain “newness” and “freshness” to them. The quality and depth of life returns; we begin to appreciate the beauty of nature and the little things in life that bring a certain richness such as the smile of a stranger, the laugh of a child, or a walk with the dog.

Step 2. Speak the Truth.

When you live in and express truth, irrespective of the fact that it tends to be in our moral code, you align yourself with an amazing power.

We all embrace authenticity and sincerity because it’s such a rare commodity in public and professional life these days. We feel better about ourselves when we speak truthfully, as Truth builds a strong self esteem and aligns you with your real authentic nature.

Step 3. Get Clear on What You Want.

Many people never focus on a clear mission or objective.

Many live in a state of constant fear, focusing their attention on what they don’t want and then wondering what happened when life reciprocates those thoughts into physical evidence.

Write your personal development goal down. Make it concrete by putting it on paper. Place it where you can see it every day. It makes the goal real and acts as a reminder of what you are working towards. Making your desires known is a necessary process of manifesting them.

Step 4. Avoid a Victimhood Mentality.

“Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment, and learn again to exercise his will, his personal responsibility.”—Albert Schweitzer

No one causes you to feel bad other than yourself. We can’t always avoid life’s ebbs and flows but we always get to choose how we want to respond. When we cease blaming others for our self created experience, we begin to see reality with an entirely new perspective. We literally get a quantum dose of personal growth. You are the master of your destiny and the captain of your soul, as the saying goes.

It comes down to choice and responsibility for ourselves but if you want to live a more fulfilling existence, free of guilt and full of positive life affirming experiences, then you need to take full responsibility for your experience. That starts in believing it’s all possible, and then learning to love and respect yourself enough to choose personal growth and doing the right thing over ego satisfaction and outside influence.

Step 5. Honor Your Agreements.

When you set an intention to honor your agreements, you begin to recognize how much harmony or disharmony you are creating. When you don’t keep your agreements with yourself and to others, it becomes a heavy burden to bear. You fall into the trap of speaking disappointingly of yourself, leading to a cycle of excuses and the dead end road to regrets. Be true to your word.

Attractor Field Therapy How to Take Charge of Your Life and Your Health at the Cause

T

he Law of Attraction, explained in The Secret, Napoleon Hills’ Think and Grow Rich, and The Law of Attraction by Esther Hicks is the law and method of manifestation. The law says you attract whatever you are feeling/knowing with certainty that you already have, whether it is physically evident or not.

This law can work both ways, though. For example, if you believe, feel, “know” with certainty, and say or think the statement “I am poor,” you will experience more “poor.”

I have definitely seen and experienced that this law provides many answers, and its application allows us the power to bring in wonderful new circumstances.

Your life is like a receiver. You can receive many different stations/ realities, and you can change the channel—or your life signal can be blocked by “static.”

As a Doctor of Oriental Medicine using natural healing principles and combining teachings of remarkable geniuses worldwide who are getting results with their work, I have found value in clearing energetic fields as a dimension of healing.

What can we do if we are not manifesting what we want, or if we have disease or lack in any aspect of our life? The missing element that can prevent the goal from being reached is the much neglected subconscious and what is stored in the “matrix” (our cellular patterns and brain synapses), known and unknown. Everything in the universe is made of energy. These patterns form our attractor fields, which either serve as superhighways

for our dreams to be realized, or transmit our emotional and physical scars and become disease and blocks to our good.

What has been discovered by people such as Dr. David Hawkins, author of Power vs. Force, is that

unconscious blocks limit our success in attracting our good. They involve scars such as being neglected, molested, or physically traumatized.

These are the patterns that must be treated or released to allow goals to materialize. These patterns are usually not released deeply enough by talking about them, and they cannot be sedated enough to prevent the development of disease.

The matrix of the body which allows us to absorb events and traumas is very resilient and can perform many cellular activities. It can handle a significant amount of force without side effects. There is a limit, though—when the storage of stress of injuries, traumas, and emotional pain becomes too much, the matrix can no longer absorb and adapt (especially if the person dwells on them, strengthening the negative patterns). When that point is reached, they can spill over and become locked into the proteins of the cells.

This awareness drew me to explore Dr. Hawkins’ findings and methodology and implement meridian energy-altering formulas, including sound and color therapy, which allow for the cleansing of the energy fields which are at the source of mental and physical disorders. We have tools that allow us to literally change the patterns of energy and thus change what/who we are—and what we attract.

Recently I treated a woman who had a severe hip pain and could hardly walk. When the musical tones and acupuncture she needed were identified using kinesiology and applied, she “tuned in” to the pain of the event buried in her hip. In a few minutes, the pain left, and she walked easily. The triggering event had occurred 30 years before the actual hip pain had developed.

Attractor field therapies’ physical treatments work as specified in removing both the symptoms of disease and the energy field responsible for the particular disorder.

I have found that every disease has a pattern, or multiple patterns, that have caused it to develop. I have found that the release of the energy blocks allows for the restoration of health, prosperity, and happiness. How do you know if you need to release something? Just look at what is happening in your body. Symptoms are guideposts. Also look at the other things you are attracting, and ask, is this what I really want?

t happens to all of us. We wake up one day and realize that we have been here before—just like yesterday and the day before that. Today is destined to be the same as all the others: safe, comfortable … and boring.

Often, we need to engage in new experiences to be more vital and happy.

Research from psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Gregory Berns, Ph.D., author of Satisfaction, shows that our brains benefit from new experiences so much so that the process releases the feelgood chemical dopamine. According to a study published in the journal Neuron, it is even triggered by the mere expectation of a new experience. Researchers call this the “exploration bonus.”

We are born to explore. Dr. Norman Doidge, author of The Brain that Changes Itself, says that connections between brain neurons, called dendrites, develop in response to new experiences, and they shrink or vanish altogether if they’re not stimulated with new information. To keep our brains happy, we must keep moving forward into the new.

If novelty feels so good and does good things for us, why do we usually stick with what we know? The answer lies deep in the emotional center of the brain, called the amygdala, which perceives the unknown as potentially threatening. As a result, we often overestimate the potential risk inherent in a new experience and underestimate the consequences of playing it safe.

The good news is that we can override this default. Here are some practi-

cal ways to build the necessary life skills—our venture aptitude—to pursue new experiences and really start living.

Do it to do it. When you approach an experience with this attitude, there is no harm to your self-worth because your objective isn’t the result, but the experience; the pursuit of knowledge, challenge, or enjoyment—and that’s egoless.

Advance into the fear. You inflame fear by running from it, and you reduce it with every step you take facing straight at it.

Make the unknown more knowable. Knowledge trumps irrational fears. Talk to others who have participated in experiences you wish to engage in. Do research.

Don’t look at the mountaintop.

Break down big goals (running a race, acting in a neighborhood play) into small, incremental goals (running around the block, taking a beginner’s voice class) to build competence and confidence.

Dabble. Sample the offerings. Try several different classes or events to see which ones excite you the most.

Judge your life by how much you try, not by the results. That removes the fear and alibis, and puts you squarely in the center of the place where you are at your happiest—absorbed in life-affirming experiences.

Balance Blesses Our Youth Wise Parenting Insights from Wendy Mogel

Race to Nowhere reveals the problems associated with America’s academic testing culture. What are the most critical weaknesses of today’s public school system?

It is breaking my heart to see enrichment programs sacrificed on the altar of standardized testing and such extreme focus on core academic skills.

We certainly want our children to have these skills, but we are losing sight of how much is learned through play, imagination, art and music.

High school students feel tremendous pressure to succeed. It seems that as a society, we are displacing our own anxieties about the unstable economy and the condition of the planet onto

our children. As we try to arm them with a set of skills to face an uncertain future, we are also losing sight of who they are as individuals. Too often we overlook the reality that some young people are not natural scholars, athletes, or gregarious leaders, but possess other equally worthy abilities.

How are such blind spots affecting our

Students are paying the price for the pressure being put on them on multiple levels. Heavy backpacks are damaging their spines, sleep deprivation interferes with their learning process, and expectation of perfection can lead to girls with eating disorders and demoralized boys with a desire to give up.

I routinely speak with students who feel compelled to personally end hunger in Rwanda while they must also score high grades in several advanced placement classes, excel in multiple extracurricular activities, and maintain a slender figure. Some of these same high school kids tell me they fear that scoring a B- on a quiz may cause their parents to divorce or drive their mothers into depression, partly based on some sense that adult pride and security rest on their children’s accomplishment.

What can teachers do to facilitate healthy learning environments?

While teachers can set an example of work-life balance, exuberance, and involvement for young people, healthy

teacher-parent relationships are vital, as well. Anxious parents can sometimes act like bullies to teachers when they are concerned about their child’s success. I encourage teachers to work with parents in a respectful and diplomatic way, without becoming defensive or taking anything too personally; I remind them that parents are often just nervous.

What advice do you have for parents of young children?

Encourage learning via this wonderful, natural world. Children are natural theologians, biologists, seekers of social justice, artists, poets, and above all, explorers and inventors. We serve children well if we see them as seeds that came in a packet without a label. Our job is to provide sufficient food and water and pull the biggest weeds. We don’t know what kind of flower we’ll get or when it will bloom.

How can parents foster learning and success in all their children?

A big piece of a parent’s responsibility is to clearly see each of their children for who they are, independent of parental preconceptions and dreams—and to foster that individual’s strengths and enthusiasm for life, instead of struggling to fit him or her into society’s narrow definitions of success. A snapshot taken of a child today should not be confused with the epic movie of his or her entire life.

Good parents model balance; but the default position in our culture has become overindulgence, overprotection, overscheduling and expectations of perfection. When parents pick up their kids from school, instead of cross-examining them about test scores and who they sat with at lunch, a mom or dad can share something delightful about their own day; something interesting they saw or did or thought that reminded them of their son or daughter. Communicate that it’s a pleasure to be a parent and an adult.

Show them that as grownups, we continue to learn new things. Inspire them to want to be happy adults and parents.

Ideas for schools and teachers to explore: Revise school schedules and homework policies. Consider block schedules, trimesters, or a later start to the school day. Schedule quarterly “no homework” nights and/or “off weeks” when no testing is allowed.

Emphasize projects and problem-based learning. Achievement improves when students are engaged in hands-on learning. Make daily assignments relevant to students’ lives and try assigning a final project in lieu of a final exam.

hat’s great news for tomorrow’s job-seekers. Yet, most American youth are matriculating out of the country’s schools ill-equipped to compete for these high-tech, highwage jobs; among developed nations, U.S. high school students currently rank 23rd in science and 31st in mathematics. Now, hundreds of schools are working to better prepare students by harnessing outside resources to reinvigorate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curricula in classrooms and afterschool programs.

Forget rote memorization of the periodic table of elements that previous generations may equate with science class. Kids in STEM programs are designing video games, programming robots, and building solar cars—fun, hands-on, practical projects that add zest to technical subjects. The extra excitement helps, because many STEM programs extend the school day, either as a mandatory late-day module or an optional afterschool session.

Psyched about Science

Kids like Camerino Sanchez-Park can’t get enough. “Robotics helped me learn a lot about science and batterypowered objects and engines,” says this fifth-grader at Faller Elementary School, in Ridgecrest, California. “The best part was working with the cool, high-tech robots. I would definitely do it again!”

Sanchez-Park is one of 87 youths psyched about science as a result of hands-on afterschool programs run by a local nonprofit, High Desert Leapin’ Lizards. It taps the brainpower of scientists and engineers from a nearby naval base to instruct in subjects like renewable energy, chemistry and robotics. Rather than focusing on abstract concepts, students create working windmills or robots capable of tackling obstacle courses.

“It not only sparks an interest in science, it teaches them how to think like a scientist,” says Program Administrator Sandra Goldstein Birmingham.

“For example, the kids maintain an engineering journal of the chal-

Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science, or (MS)², taps into higher institutions of learning as another rich source of STEM prowess. Founded in 2005, the Washington, D.C., public charter school is located at the university, one of the nation’s preeminent historically black colleges.

Every (MS)² classroom includes at least one undergraduate teaching assistant, providing youths with collegiate role models in STEM fields, while giving university students an opportunity to hone their teaching skills.

The school also partners with NASA, which pairs its engineers with teachers for professional development, and sponsors rigorous student workshops in astronautics at its Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Maryland. The collaboration gives students a scientific leg up while broadening their career possibilities.

“Employees within the space program range from botanists to ballet

dancers, all necessary in helping to get astronauts ready for takeoff,” says Yohance Maqubela, executive director of (MS)². He recognizes that not every student will end up pursuing a career in a STEM field, but that science and technology will permeate whatever discipline they choose.

Above all, STEM curricula are designed to address one of the most frequently asked student questions:

“Why am I learning this?” By making learning more relevant, these programs are helping kids stay motivated, think critically about their surroundings and connect the dots so they see the big picture. It’s a mindset that will serve them well, wherever life leads them.

Collaborating on real-life problems in small groups develops more than tangible skills, attests Marianne DeModena. Her sixth grade son, Christian Deguglielmo, completed apprenticeships with Google at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and with investment advisors Cambridge Associates, both in Boston.

“Christian came home a different kid,” says DeModena. “It’s brought out his leadership abilities, school pride, social skills and confidence … it’s really opened up this other side of him. He says Citizen Schools is his favorite subject.”

The program’s success is more than anecdotal: A longitudinal study by Policy Studies Associates, Inc. found that kids enrolled in Citizen Schools afterschool programs significantly outperformed a comparison group on a range of indicators, including school attendance, proficiency test scores, and graduation rate.

n 2001, a Time Magazine article, “The Power of Yoga,” suggested that yoga had dug its roots deep enough into America’s cultural soil to warrant consideration by open-minded researchers interested in determining if yoga could bloom into a therapy to treat or prevent disease.

While medical researchers conduct evidence-based studies on how yoga affects specific areas of the body, Kamini Desai, Ph.D., developer of The Amrit Yoga Teacher Training curriculum for the Amrit Yoga Institute in Salt Springs, Florida, acts on what she knows is true. “Physical, mental, and emotional problems are manifestations of a variety of deeper causes and yoga, as well as the emerging field of yoga therapy, addresses the subtler levels from which illnesses arise,” advises Desai, whose body of teachings combines her education in western psychology with training in yoga and eastern philosophy at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health.

How Yoga Therapy Works

“In psychology we work from

The body is a unique tool through which to work with samskaras—constellations of experiences and learned behaviors that the body/mind has registered and held on to in its journey. Releasing samskaras impacts the energy body. “Energy follows attention. Attention, when fragmented or caught up in ‘continuous play’ thought loops, creates circular energy patterns, which affect energy moving through the body’s meridian pathways. Adventures in Organic Gardening A Toxic Mistake

A

s an experienced organic gardener, I had done everything right—amended the soil with compost, planted non-GMO seeds, fertilized with cow manure from pasture-raised cattle, and so on.

When the blackberry leaves started curling up into deformed fractals, I thought perhaps they’d received too much nitrogen. Then my wife’s newly transplanted tomatoes started doing the same. Probably a virus, I thought. Then the beans did it … and an eggplant.

But when my mulberry tree also joined the club, I realized something more sinister might be in play.

Google searches and calls to friends revealed nothing—until I came across an article in a British newspaper about a community garden struck with the same plight. Once I found one article, and a suspect, it was easy to find a lot more of the same.

What had been killing my plants and those of my fellow gardeners across the Atlantic? Cow manure: that wonderful, plant-healthy, organic alternative to chemical fertilizers. But it wasn’t the manure itself that was to blame—it was a persistent herbicide inside it.

The previous fall I had indeed bought some manure. In fact, I bought a double load of good rotted stuff from a local cattle farmer, spread it around my trees and plants, and dug it into the lovely new vegetable beds I had constructed for my wife.

After identifying the likely suspect, I realized I’d shared some of my pile with a fellow Master Gardener. If her plants were showing the same symptoms … Breathlessly, I picked up the phone and gave her a call.

“Jo? This is David. How is your garden doing?”

“Fine,” she replied, then paused.

“Actually … my tomatoes are really curling up and twisting. I have no idea what’s wrong with them—I’ve grown them in these beds for years and never seen anything like this.”

“Did you use my cow manure on them?”

“Yes, why?” The answer confirmed my fears. With many apologies, I revealed my suspicions and decided it was time to dig deeper into the pile of deadly droppings.

Many herbicides break down rapidly. The much-maligned (probably for good cause) RoundUp is a contact-based killer and disintegrates rapidly into the environment under normal conditions.

But the stuff I had used to unknowingly poison my plants was different. It was a persistent hormone-based toxin that could be sprayed on a field, eaten by an animal, digested, excreted, composted in a heap, and still kills plants.

The butler in this mystery, it seems, was Aminopyralid. It specifically targets a variety of non-grass species by inhibiting their cell stacking functions, causing gross deformations and plant death. It stays in the soil for an unreasonably long period of time (estimates vary from one to five years) and does not break down under composting. If a cow munches hay harvested in a field where Aminopyralid has been sprayed, their manure becomes a plant killer instead of a plant feeder. The normal ecological cycle has been disrupted.

What’s worse, it can be found in bales of straw, bagged manure, and compost—and it’s almost impossible to track the supply chain back to who sprayed what, where, and when. Most gardeners who lose their plants are likely to assume their thumb wasn’t green

enough, not that they’ve been poisoned by industrial agriculture!

Armed with all this new information, I called the farmer who had sold me the manure. I asked if he’d used anything on his fields the previous year.

“Just a new herbicide recommended for pigweed. It worked great, and it’s safe for the cows to eat,” he told me. I asked if he knew what it was called. He told me he wasn’t sure, but said he’d let me know. I gave him my e-mail.

A few days later, I received his message that told me the substance’s name and a link to its ingredients.

Aminopyralid. Case closed.

Long a fixture in the area where I live, he was horrified to hear that his manure had caused me to lose my plants, though he told me no one else had called to say they’d had any problems (likely because they didn’t know what did it!). My cattle-farming friend had no idea the toxin could continue downstream—in fact, most farmers don’t. The substance does what it promises, kills weeds and keeps them dead— but the effect can carry far beyond the pigweed and brambles in a hay field.

As I look across the empty beds of black soil that should have been teeming with lush green life, I’m saddened by the loss of a year’s crop. I’ve crumbled in charcoal, added some new soil from the chicken run, and grown some members of the grass family (corn) to soak up the toxins. But I won’t know if I’m in the clear until I plant next year’s beans and tomatoes. I also dug up the blackberries, washed their roots and planted them in new spots, scraped the manure away from all my trees, and gotten a refund from the cattle farmer—but the feeling of violation doesn’t go away.

With Aminopyralid, organic gardeners like you and me are getting the shaft. Those of us who wish to grow things naturally and without poisons have to be savvy and stay a step ahead. Keep your eyes open. If an age-old garden amendment like cow manure isn’t safe, who knows what is?

I have a sneaking suspicion God allowed me to lose a few plants so I can save a few of yours. If that’s the case, so be it.

But I sure miss those tomatoes.

Prep yellow squash and zucchini by washing thoroughly and patting dry. Size of slicing is important; to enable sautéing both vegetables simultaneously, cut the denser zucchini to approximately 1/8” thickness; the yellow squash should be twice as thick a cut— about ¼” in thickness. Thin-slice (no fine chopping!) the peeled shallots.

Using at least a 10” skillet (larger is better), add coconut oil over medium heat.

When oil is heated, add zucchini and yellow squash. Stir several times.

After 3 to 5 minutes, move vegetables to sides of skillet, creating a spot in the center. Add butter, then organic minced garlic in middle of space created. Allow a minute; add sliced shallots to center of skillet. Continue

t’s simple, quick and delicious— fresh from your garden or from the organic section of your grocer. It can be a base for other vegetables added—pearl or yellow onions, eggplant, yellow and red peppers, diced or sun-dried tomatoes, bok choy, fennel, celery. Experiment and have fun.

Adding fresh tarragon or lemongrass adds another level to the variety of accompanying herbs.

But here is the basic recipe …

1½ lbs. yellow squash 1½ lbs. zucchini squash 1 tbsp. coconut oil 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 2 tbsp. organic minced garlic 2 or 3 large shallots

cooking and stirring for another 3 to 5 minutes, until vegetables begin to develop a golden edge. Avoid overcooking the vegetables—they should be firm, not soft.

Just prior to removing the vegetables from skillet, chop the fresh basil and add to dish with a quick stir. Serve immediately.

Distinguishing Service, Self-Care, and Self-Absorption

per week, she felt enthused about life, including feeling joyful to fulfill her roles as wife and mother.

Our nature is to serve and our responsibility is to contribute—steadily, consistently—in a way that is clear, inspired, and healthy. And that means appropriate self-care on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

It is important to know what that balance looks like. One thing we can be clear about: one is not “giving” to the world if s/he is engaged in self-neglect.

Another example is that I have a tendency to say “yes” when people ask me to do something. And sometimes that is good for people, and sometimes it’s too much. But we have a powerful reference point, and that reference point is purpose.

Human life is meant to be intrinsically meaningful.

Living on purpose means, when someone makes a request of me, I get to evaluate that request based on my purpose in life. Purpose in the most sublime and profound sense, and that

he nature of the self is to serve.

It is essential to look at how in the name of service, there are times when we are not genuinely aligned with our purpose and values.

We can be hiding in the name of service, and we can even be taking.

“Serving others” can be used as a way to avoid our process of self-realization.

Also, there is a subtle distinction between self-care and self-absorption. In my coaching practice, I endeavor to move towards that balance—not going into selfabsorption, or hiding behind giving.

I coached a client who lived with her husband and three boys. She was a very good wife and mother, serving the needs of the four males in the household, and she was quite miserable and resentful. Her life fully revolved around them, and she neglected self-care. At one point in the coaching she mentioned creating one evening per week where she would do what she wanted to do.

trickles down to moment to moment decisions. So someone can say to me, “Can you give me a ride?” And I may think, I wasn’t planning to spend 90 minutes doing that, but it connects with how I want to contribute to the world.

Someone may ask me, “Hey, can you give me $10 to buy cigarettes?”

And for me, that would be simple. It is not serving anyone, in terms of my understanding of purpose.

To the extent that we are not clear, life can become too complex because there is no reference point. It can be hard to make decisions if you don’t know what your goal is.

What do you want to achieve today, this month? What experience do you want to create today, this month?

This becomes the reference point of how to use your time, energy and resources.

Simply Messing About in Boats

“This has been a wonderful day!’ said the Mole. “Do you know, I’ve never been in a boat before in all my life.”

“What?” cried the Rat, openmouthed: “Never been in a—you never—well—what have you been doing, then?”

“Is it so nice as all that?” asked the Mole shyly, though he was quite prepared to believe it.

“Nice? It’s the ONLY thing,” said the Water Rat solemnly. “Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING— absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

M

y earliest memory in life is of almost drowning. It probably wasn’t that dramatic, but I remember it vividly. I was at the beach, wading in the shallows with my little bucket, hunting for shells, when a wave went over my head and took me down for what must have been only a few seconds before my parents snatched me from the water. According to my mother, I was not quite two.

It happened so fast that my eyes stayed wide open when I went under.

The water was clear, and the sun shone through and made it the same pale translucent glass-green as an old Coca-Cola bottle. I remember the sense of wonder at being inside the wave, the calm fascination with the prismatic streaks of color

in the water surging overhead: cobalt and aqua, turquoise and purple. I remember what it sounded like: the muted waves, the churning foam muffled, at a distance. I remember feeling panicked that I didn’t know which way was up and out, and that I couldn’t breathe, but also feeling strangely serene. It was both tranquil and terrifying.

To this day I have a love-hate relationship with the sea. I still find it both tranquil and terrifying. I am drawn to it, yet it frightens me. I cannot be on a beach at night; I become thoroughly morose and dispirited.

My early experience no doubt contributed to my lifelong fear of deep water, specifically deep dark water. I can swim just fine and have no phobia of sharks, but if anyone ever wishes to destroy me, simply throw me into the ocean at night. Sheer terror will kill me before any rogue wave or shark ever gets the chance.

I have the same feelings about outer space. I do not like vast dark limitless things where I float about unsafely, lacking oxygen and someplace solid to put my feet. You can take your outer-space and underwater colonies of the future and ... I was going to say something about “where the sun don’t shine,” but that is my point exactly.

Epcot’s Future World used to freak me out as a kid. I figured I’d die young because I knew that, should these futuristic living arrangements come to pass in my lifetime, as Walt Dis-

ney World seemed to assure me they would, I’d just go down with Spaceship Earth, so to speak.

When I was 15, I was in a boating accident. Some genius at a lakeside church picnic apparently decided to reenact Washington crossing the Delaware—which, as Dave Barry says, looks like he’s got a group roughly the size of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the rowboat with him. That is what we did. That is why the boat capsized in the middle of the lake.

The boat flipped and went over me. Submerged in a blind panic in the dark waters beneath the boat, once again I couldn’t tell which way was up. Thankfully, a good friend, to whom I will always be grateful, saw my hand and pulled me out.

This incident did not ease my terror of the aquatic. For a few years, I refused to go on boats. And forget about swimming in “wild” waters; I wouldn’t get in anything but the shallow end of a pool. This can get tricky when you live in Florida and pretty much everyone you know has a boat, your family included, and arranges their recreation around bodies of water. I spent considerable time reading on the shore.

But, as I do not like to give in to my fears, I soon decided that I needed to get over them, simply by ignoring them and pushing through. I started making myself swim in springs and lakes, rivers and the ocean. I forced myself to say yes to boating excursions. I grimly set my teeth and tried snorkeling, tubing, underwater photography. I would be Jacques Cousteau,

by God, if that is what it took.

In time, I became able to endure, perhaps even enjoy, such pursuits. In fact, I recently spent two solid days on a boat, on rivers and in the ocean, and obviously have lived to tell you about it—and I had a lovely time.

But you will have to wait until September’s column to hear about it, because that’s all the space we have for this month.

Experience Your Life Review Now Write Letters to Your Loved Ones

H

ow many times have you said to yourself, “If I only knew what s/he was thinking?”

Don’t worry, you will find out. When your body passes into the spiritual realm, you will essentially press the replay button on the story of your life.

You will travel back in time and see everyone you have encountered in your lifetime. The unique and amazing part of this experience is that, unlike watching a replay on your television where you simply see characters reenact situations, you will actually be there in that moment, experiencing everyone’s emotions are if they were your own.

We don’t have to wait until we die to see the bigger picture of how we are affecting those in our life. We have a chance right now to release any guilt or resentment we may have in our hearts. We have an opportunity to leave this life with no regrets.

But how can we do that? Well, the answer is very simple—with a letter.

We can write our loved ones a positive letter, telling them how much they mean to us. While this may not be the easiest thing to do, it will “eternally” be worth it.

Writing a letter works because we will be taking the time to say exactly what we have always needed to say.

We could write everything we would want our loved ones to know, as if we were looking back on our lives with them. The letter should be a very positive one, and we would need to include anything in the letter that we would regret not saying after we left this world.

A letter-writing exercise is also a great way to help us heal unresolved issues with our loved ones. We wouldn’t have any regrets after this life, because we’d be able to say and do everything that was needed now.

words of love and encouragement to significant people in our lives. n The forgiveness letter—a letter to forgive someone else or yourself if you are the one who needs to be forgiven. n A letter to yourself—a loving letter of appreciation to yourself. n A letter to deceased love ones—a letter of either appreciation, forgiveness, or just to maintain your connection to those who have died.

I have written these types of letters to people in my life, and the results were better than I could ever have anticipated. While these letters were not always easy to write, they have made all the difference, not only in our communication with each other, but in the peace that now exists between all of us.

One of the greatest benefits I received was from a letter I wrote to my mother.

The day before she passed away last year, she was unaware of what was going on around her. As she lay in bed, I was so happy to see the letter I had written to her a year before lying on her desk. It had everything I’d needed to say, so I pulled up a chair and softly read those words to her.

Although she had not responded earlier to anything, as I was reading my letter of love to her, the expression on her face completely changed, and she raised her hands to her mouth. She had heard me!

What a blessing it was that I had already written these perfect words and was able to read them to her during her last day. Everything I needed to say was said, and I had no regrets.

You, too, will be able to experience tremendous blessings in your life by taking the time to write these types of letters to your loved ones.

Tell them everything you need to tell them now. Write down your words of love and forgiveness (whether you want them to forgive you or you want to forgive them).
