Natural Iodine Supplementation A Must for Most Americans

W

e all need iodine, yet most of us don’t get enough of it through our diet. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that iodine deficiency in the developed world has increased fourfold in the past 40 years and now affects nearly three-quarters of all adults. Numerous U.S. practicing physicians quoted widely in the media estimate that the incidence of hypothyroidism in our adult population may be between 30 and 70 percent. Thus, we can’t efficiently produce the thyroid hormones that serve as chemical messengers triggering nearly every bodily function. The presence or absence of iodine affects our every cell.

Be Aware of Hypothyroidism Symptoms

Symptoms can range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and a variety of skin and hair problems. Hypothyroidism can further cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers. In children, insufficient iodine has been strongly linked with mental retardation, deafness, attention deficient and hyperactivity disorder and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University, China’s Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and France’s National Academy of Medicine.

Low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, is the most recognized and obvious indicator of low iodine intake because the thyroid gland contains more concentrated iodine than other organs.

The answer is simple: Taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage can rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the thyroid and the whole body.

A Few Drops Can Change Your Life! You could feel better, lose weight or increase energy and mental clarity with a few drops of Natural Awakenings DetoxifieD ioDine daily in water or on your skin when used as directed. An essential component of the thyroid, iodine replacement has been reported to give relief from:

My wife, who suffered from extreme fatigue and other symptoms, saw a dramatic increase in energy after just a few days of taking the natural iodine drops. Now if she misses a day, she’ll end up falling asleep in the middle of the afternoon, like she used to do before taking the iodine. It works! ~ Aaron My doctor told me that I had a hypothyroid condition, prescribed medication and was happy with the follow-up test results, yet I noticed no positive effects on my overall wellbeing. Within two weeks of using the Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine, I had more energy, felt more awake and enjoyed clearer thinking and greater peace of mind. People even comment that I look younger. I am a fan! ~ Larry

TESTIMONIAL **

As a licensed health care practitioner ... I was aware the varicella zoster virus (VZV) was present in my body. However, at age 66, I developed a sudden onset “classic” case of shingles … I was not prepared for its consequences. Within a day ... I began developing ... pustules that developed into a six-inch-tall, almost solid band of blisters covering the right side of my torso from spine to sternum. I’ve had broken bones, pulled hamstrings, even a kidney stone, but nothing compares with the incessant discomfort and high level of pain associated with shingles. Compare it to nerve endings exploding on the surface of your skin, from the inside out. ... I applied “ShingleXTM” ... Within 24 hours ... the pain was lessened to the point I could sleep several hours at a time. By the outbreak’s tenth day (only five days from beginning the treatment), the blistering had basically disappeared and no new pustules formed. I began to resume my normal activities.

The Perseids are coming!

The Perseids, which peak every year during mid-August, are considered to be the best meteor shower of the year. With fast and bright meteors, Perseids frequently leave long trails of light and color behind them as they streak through the Earth’s atmosphere. The Perseids are also one of the most plentiful showers (50-100 meteors seen per hour). And, with warm summer nighttime weather, sky watchers can comfortably view the shower. I experienced my first peek at the Perseids many years ago during a family vacation on the shores of Lake Kabetogema in Minnesota, with a backdrop of the amazing “Northern Lights.” There is NO light pollution there. The Milky Way is so bright it nearly lights the Earth, and because every meteor is visible, it’s easy to spend hours sky-watching. Once, we heard one “shooting star” noisily whoosh through the atmosphere, and then we heard a huge BANG! a moment later. I don’t know whether it broke the sound barrier or impacted. This year, the Perseids will peak during the late-night and early-morning hours of the 11th and 12th of August. A crescent moon will set shortly after midnight, leaving dark skies for optimal viewing from late night until dawn. I’m told the best, darkest place to view the Perseids is near the Forest or along the St. Johns River. I’ll bet the rural parts of Levy County would be ideal, too. Thanks to http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/perseids. cfm for some of the information in this Letter. I hope you get to wish upon a star, and I hope you get your soul’s wish! Namaste, Carolyn

healthbriefs Never Too Old to Quit

E

ven smokers 60 and older can live longer if they quit smoking, according to a 2012 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Three experts from the German Cancer Research Center, in Heidelberg, analyzed 17 studies from the United States, Australia, China, England, France, Japan and Spain that followed groups of between 863 and 877,243 people for periods ranging from three to 50 years. Findings showed that the longer a person had been classified as a former, rather than current, smoker, the more their risk of premature death decreased. The researchers also observed that current smokers showed the highest absolute mortality rates in all the studies. Dr. Tai Hing Lam, of the University of Hong Kong, observes that for people in their 60s, quitting was linked to a 21 percent decrease in the risk of premature death. The risk was reduced by 27 percent for those in their 70s and by 24 percent for individuals in their 80s. Lam added that the World Health Organization’s statistic that one out of every two smokers will die from their habit should be printed on all cigarette packages, “… so that all smokers know they are betting their lives on the toss of a coin.”

Colorful Plates for Picky Eaters

P

arents trying to entice fussy eaters to sample more nutritionally diverse diets have a surprising strategy at hand: color. A study at Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, has shown that colorful fare—specifically, food plates with seven different items and six colors—appear to be particularly favored by children. In contrast, adults tend to prefer fewer colors on one plate—only three items and three hues.

Monsanto Weed Killer Contaminates Food

A

peer-reviewed Massachusetts Institute of Technology report published in the scientific journal Entropy points to evidence that residues of glyphosate, the chief ingredient in Roundup weed killer, manufactured by Monsanto and sprayed over millions of acres of crops, has been found in food. The residues enhance the damaging effects of other food-borne chemicals and toxins in the environment known to disrupt normal body functions and induce disease, including Parkinson’s, infertility, and cancers. Reuters reports that environmentalists, consumer groups, and plant scientists from several countries have warned that heavy use of glyphosate is harming plants, people, and animals. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a standard registration review of glyphosate to determine by 2015 if its use should be limited. Yet Monsanto continues to claim that glyphosate is safe and less damaging than other commonly used herbicides.

Blogging Away Teen Troubles

A

dolescent angst, formerly vented in private “Dear diary” entries, is now shared with others in blogs—with positive effect. According to a recent study published in the journal Psychological Services, interactively engaging with an online community is an effective way for teens to relieve social distress. Researchers recruited 161 teenagers who exhibited some level of social anxiety or stress and asked them to blog, with one group opening their posts to comments. Bloggers who wrote about their problems and allowed readers to respond reported the greatest improvement in mood. The comments on blogs were overwhelmingly positive, offering constructive support.

Collateral Damage

Disappearing Wild Pollinators Spell Disaster

T

he perilous decline of domestic honeybees due to the widespread occurrence of colony collapse disorder continues to make news, but wild bees and other insects are often overlooked, even though they are twice as effective in producing seeds and fruit on crops, according to a study of 41 crops in 600 fields worldwide by Argentina’s research network, CONICET. For the first time, scientists have a handle on the huge contribution of wild insects, showing that honeybees cannot replace the wild insects lost as their habitat is increasingly destroyed. Study leader Lucas Garibaldi, of Argentina’s National University, in Río Negro, says that relying on honeybees is a highly risky strategy, because disease can sweep through a single species and it may not adapt to environmental changes as well as wild pollinators. Also, trucking in managed honeybee hives does not replace native pollinators, which visit more plants, resulting in more effective cross-pollination; honeybees tend to carry pollen from one flower to another on the same plant.

High-Tech Teachers Students Use Smartphones to Study

H

ighlighting the potential for digital learning, a new survey by the Verizon Foundation has found that a third of middle school students are already using mobile apps on smartphones to do schoolwork and collaborate with peers on projects. Beyond accessing information via the Internet, students often turn to free apps to play games that help them master math concepts, virtually dissect an animal, or analyze clouds and concepts of condensation and more. The Verizon Foundation offers training to educators on integrating mobile technology into lesson plans by partnering with the nonprofit Technology Student Association and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together, they are sponsoring the Innovative App Challenge, in which hundreds of middle and high school student teams are conceptualizing mobile apps that incorporate science/ technology/engineering/mathematics (STEM) activities to solve a problem in their school or community. Ten teams won personal smartphones and $10,000 grants for their schools, plus assistance in creating their apps and bringing them to the public earlier this year. Verizon expects to launch a new edition of the program this fall. Source: The Christian Science Monitor at CSMonitor.com

GM-Oh-Oh

GMOs Threaten Wheat Exports

A

merica lags behind the world in limiting, banning or even simply labeling genetically modified (GE, GM or GMO) foods, and now Japan has suspended some imports from the United States because of the discovery of unapproved GM wheat in Oregon. The European Union is weighing similar action. Serious economic implications stem from the fact that many countries will not accept imports of genetically modified foods, and the U.S. exports about half of its annual wheat crop. The Washington Post reports the presence of GMO wheat on an 80-acre field in Oregon as a mystery. Monsanto tested a similar strain in Oregon between 1994 and 2005, but the product was never approved for commercial use. The strain was identified in the state when a farmer tried clearing a field using Monsanto’s herbicide and discovered that the wheat could not be killed. Blake Rowe, CEO of the Oregon Wheat Commission, says that reductions in Northwest wheat sales would affect farmers in Idaho and Washington as well as Oregon, because the wheat is blended together. Oregon sold $492 million of wheat in 2011; 90 percent of it went overseas.

Capturing Energy from Asphalt Roads

A

sphalt roads throughout the country are well known for soaking up the sun’s rays. Now, new piping technology from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Massachusetts, is offering a way to trap heat and use it elsewhere, potentially transforming blacktopped streets into giant solar energy collectors. It works by using the sun-warmed asphalt to heat water pumped through tubes embedded a few inches below the road surface. This can help to cool asphalt by utilizing some of the heat that would have remained in the material to heat the circulating water to produce electricity. Researchers are testing different pipe materials and conductive aggregates to add to the asphalt to improve heat absorption. Costs relative to potential returns have yet to be quantified. Pricey Bottled Water May Come from a Tap

P

eter Gleick, the author of Bottled and Sold: The Story Behind Our Obsession with Bottled Water, found that most companies are cagey about revealing the source of their water. “There’s no legal requirement that they say on their label where the water comes from, and they don’t like to advertise that fact,” says Gleick. As a result, most Americans don’t know much about the origins of what we spend $11 billion a year on. In order to be called “spring water,” according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a product has to be either “collected at the point where water flows naturally to the Earth’s surface or from a borehole that taps into the underground source.” Other terms aren’t regulated. Gleick found that about 55 percent of bottled waters are spring water. The other 45 percent is mostly treated tap water, including Aquafina (Pepsi) and Dasani (Coke). Picture Perfect From athletes to astronauts, mental imagery boosts performance. by Debra Melani

L

ast winter, Terry Chiplin went for an early morning run near his Colorado home. Snow crunched as his sneakered feet hit the front porch of his mountain lodge, tucked into a secluded forest. Evergreen boughs glistened in the sun, drooping slightly from the weight of the sparkling white powder. The running coach smiled as he lifted his face to the sky, welcoming the large, wet flakes that kissed his face. “Can you picture it?” asks the

bubbly British native and owner of Active at Altitude, in Estes Park. That is visualization, he explains, a concept he uses regularly at retreats he conducts for runners from beginner to elite as a holistic means of boosting performance. “It’s simply a succession of mental images; we use visualization all the time.” Whether it’s Tiger Woods envisioning a perfect golf swing minutes before taking a shot or Michael Phelps replaying a mental

video of an ideal swim the night before an Olympic event, many athletes have long worked with trainers such as Chiplin to move beyond strictly physical preparation and consciously enlist creative mental capacities to enhance their performance. Using imagery and positive self-talk can improve the efforts of any type of athlete and, as Chiplin’s clients have found, improve their lives. “The notion that we are just a physical body, so we just need to train physically, is old-fashioned,” Chiplin maintains. Shortly after launching his program six years ago, he learned firsthand how powerful the mind could be in boosting (or sabotaging) performance. He remarks, “It quickly became apparent that the main issues people face are the mental things, what is happening in their heads.” Chiplin recalls watching runners fall from the peak capabilities they had reached after training hard for endurance events as their mileage tapered off in the final days before the race. Similarly, he thinks the sort of “negative visualization” he witnessed can have a similar impact on everyday life events, such as exams, interviews and job achievement. Although unclear about its exact mechanism, sports psychologists have long recognized the value of positive mental imagery, especially in building skills and reducing anxiety. In working with athletes, they apply shared models such as those reported in The Sport Psychologist. Both professional and amateur runners have benefited from Chiplin’s camps, including graduate Ginny Landes, 62, who says visualization techniques have changed her running outlook and her life. “My goal is not high achievement or personal records; it’s to always finish my run feeling good,” says Landes, of Lafayette, Colorado. As part of the visualizing process, she says she also clears her mind of negative thoughts, stops comparing her performance to others’ performance,

and accepts factors that are out of her control, whether it’s bad race weather or competitive colleagues. Practicing helpful visualization techniques consistently in daily life can lead to better returns across the board, not just in athletics, according to Terry Orlick, a performance consultant from Ottawa, Ontario, and author of many self-improvement books, including Embracing Your Potential and In Pursuit of Excellence. Orlick has worked with people from many walks of life who use imagery in their quest for improvement, including surgeons, musicians, pilots, dancers, astronauts, and CEOs. When working with Canadian Olympic teams, Orlick found that 99 percent of the athletes practiced visualization an average of 12 minutes per day, four times a week. Studies have linked imagery and improved performance in a variety of sports. For instance, researchers found

that golfers who used visualization and positive self-talk improved their putting performance (Journal of Sports Science & Medicine). Another study showed an increase in confidence among novice female rock climbers, leading to better performance (Journal of Sport Behavior). For Landes, her personal experience is all the proof she needs. After years of rarely being able to run the entire course of a major annual race in Aspen—generally walking the last stretch—Landes tried visualizing herself having a strong finish as she trained and prepared for the event. For weeks, she replayed the last three miles many times in her mind. Then she ran the race, paring 12 minutes off her previous year’s time. “It felt great,” Landes says, “and it worked.” Freelance journalist Debra Melani writes about health care and fitness from Lyons, CO. The nonprofit organization provides research-based education and counseling on how to prevent, cope with, and beat cancer through immune-boosting holistic approaches. Since 1977, it has helped nearly 30,000 cancer patients and more than 50,000 prevention seekers. “Early detection is better than late detection, but it isn’t prevention,” says

Silberstein, who taught the psychology of health and disease at Pennsylvania’s Immaculata University. “We focus on building up patients—minimizing treatment side effects, enhancing immune system function, improving nutritional status, and addressing the reasons for sickness in the first place.” “Conventional medicine never addresses the cause, which is a process that needs to be understood so the individual can turn it off,” elaborates Massachusetts Institute of Technology-trained scientist Raymond Francis, author of Never Fear Cancer Again: How to Prevent and Reverse

Cancer. Based on his experience beating cancer and research into cellular biochemistry and molecular biology, he concluded that the disease is a biological process that affects the entire body, not something that can be cut out, killed, or poisoned. “Central to healing and prevention is the elimination of things that fuel the growth of cancer cells, such as sugar, toxins, heavy metals, nutrient-deficient processed foods, and an acidic environment in the body,” observes Francis. “Regular exercise, a daily, high-quality multivitamin, and detoxification are equally crucial to restoring the body’s biological terrain.” Doctor of Naturopathy Judy Seeger, founder of CancerCleanseCamp.com and host of CancerAnswers.TV and Cancer Winner Radio, recommends both a regular detoxification regimen and ongoing healthy nutritional plan to help maintain a healing alkaline environment. This helps cleanse the body of environmental toxins. However, the toxic emotions and stress that produce acid, weaken the immune system, and create an environment for cancer to propagate, must also be dealt with. Experts generally agree on a range of basic, common-sense preventive measures that include a low-fat, plant-based diet; aerobic, flexibility and strength exercises; healthy sleep habits; and other stress-reducing activities. “These are basic ingredients for maintaining sound health, and can be crucial toward improving the health of an individual with cancer,” says Dr. Keith Block, the “father of integrative oncology,” and author of Life Over Cancer. He founded The Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment, in Skokie, Illinois, that customizes care plans based on each person’s medical, biochemical, physical, nutritional, and psychosocial needs.

Boost Recuperative Powers

Your Cancer, by Tanya Harter Pierce. Like Francis, Lou Dina is a cancer survivor who underwent a journey of intensive research. He became a patient advocate and wrote Cancer: A Rational Approach to Long-Term Recovery. Dina speaks at conventions hosted by the Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Therapy (FACT), founded in 1971 by Ruth Sackman. He also appears with other survivors in the FACT documentary based on Sackman’s book, Rethinking Cancer: NonTraditional Approaches to the Theories, Treatments and Prevention of Cancer. From decades of findings by international clinicians, FACT educates practitioners and patients to view chronic degenerative diseases as systematic malfunctions caused by breakdowns in the balance of body chemistry that are subject to bio-repair. However manifested, they are viewed as correctable and controllable via an individualized program that includes a balanced diet of whole, unprocessed, organic foods—spurred by the Gerson therapy that floods the body with organically grown nutrients—supplementation, and detoxification. Other key measures involve body temperature therapy, cellular and stem cell therapies, and the use of botanicals. “Nutrients in food directly impact the mechanisms by which cancer cells grow and spread,” explains Block. “They also indirectly impact cancer by changing the surrounding biochemical conditions that either promote or inhibit the progression of malignant disease. This is why targeting only tumors is not enough to quash cancer. Conventional cancer therapies almost inevitably leave behind at least a small number of malignant cells. Your internal biochemical terrain plays an integral role in determining whether a tumor will regain a foothold after treatment, metastasize to distant sites,

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

or stay where it is without posing a threat.” Block notes that a healthy biochemistry can help prevent unpleasant and possibly life-threatening, complications. An anti-cancer biochemical terrain will even boost a patient’s overall quality of life. At the Block Center, detailed assessments identify disruptions in six defining features of patients’ biochemical terrain—oxidation, inflammation, immunity, blood coagulation, glycemia and stress chemistry. Cancer thrives on terrain disruptions, which also can impair treatment.

Focus on High-Impact Foods

Kathy Bero, founder of NuGenesis Inc., in Stone Bank, Wisconsin, asks, “How many other lives could be saved if doctors prescribed a diet primarily focused on plant-based, angiogenic-inhibiting foods for all cancer patients?” Angiogenesis is the development of new blood vessels. Cancer turns the body against itself by hijacking the angiogenesis process and keeping it permanently activated, ensuring that cancerous cells receive a dedicated, uninterrupted blood supply. “To effectively prevent cancer, inflammation and angiogenesis need to be controlled before a tumor can get a foothold,” advises Bero. Bero has personally beaten back two unrelated aggressive forms of cancer and credits the angiogenicinhibiting foods in clinical research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, and the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha. Examples include green tea, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, grapefruit, lemons, tomatoes, cinnamon, kale, grape seed oil, and pomegranate. “These foods also played a significant role in strengthening my immune system and restoring my overall health, which was radically affected

Patrick Quillin, Ph.D., a former vice president of nutrition for a national network of cancer hospitals and author of The Wisdom and Healing Power of Whole Foods and Beating Cancer with Nutrition, recommends a triple threat. “Cancer requires a threefold treatment approach to create a synergistic response. Teaming up to reduce the tumor burden without harming the patient, re-regulate the cancer to normal healthy tissue, and nourish the patient’s recuperative powers is far better than any one approach,” says Quillin. He maintains that restrained medical interventions, appropriate nutrition, and naturopathic approaches can bolster nonspecific natural defense mechanisms to reverse the underlying cause of the disease. “Nutrition and traditional oncology treatments are synergistic, not antagonistic, as many oncologists believe,” advises Quillin. Glenn Sabin, founder of FON Therapeutics, similarly suggests that multi-interventional, outcome-based studies, akin to Dr. Dean Ornish’s approach to prostate cancer, could greatly benefit conventional oncology. Sabin recounts his Harvard Medical School-documented remission of advanced leukemia in his upcoming book, N-of-1: How One Man’s Triumph Over Terminal Cancer is Changing the Medical Establishment. Sabin turned to therapeutic nutrition, neutraceuticals, stress reduction, and exercise to become a 22-year cancer “thriver” without the aid of conventional therapies. He also emphasizes the importance of the psychological and psychosocial aspects of healing with the cancer patients he coaches. “If you don’t have your head in the game, it’s hard to make anything else work for you,” counsels Sabin.

chemically, physically and spiritually,” says Yang. As a faculty member of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, Yang sees firsthand how few patients understand that the trauma of a diagnosis and treatment can reactivate past traumas, unresolved issues, blockages, and repressed emotions. Both he and Hsu offer mind/body/spirit interventions to help patients cope better. “I talk to people who do all the right things to improve their biochemistry, but without an emotional detox and spiritual connection to something larger than themselves, their healing process tends to stall,” Seeger observes. Her online talk shows feature long-term cancer survivors such as Dr. Carl Helvie, author of You Can Beat Lung Cancer Using Alternative/ Integrative Interventions. “It all comes down to the microcosm of the cell. If we give our 73 trillion cells everything they need, the macrocosm of the body will function

the Secret to Healing Cancer; Dr. Jingduan Yang, a board-certified psychiatrist and founder and medical director of the Tao Institute of Mind & Body Medicine; and Seeger, believe that the mind and spirit play a significant role in healing. “Cancer begins in the spirit and ends up in the body, which is why I recommend that anyone positively diagnosed read the Cancer Report,” remarks Silberstein. Cancer Report, cowritten by John R. Voell and Cynthia A. Chatfield, discusses psychoneuroimmunology and the powerful role that the mind, emotions and spirit play in contributing to or resisting disease and healing even the most terminal of cancers (Tinyurl.com/VoellCancerReport). Yang and Hsu, who also use acupuncture protocols, believe illness is a reflection of inner problems that disrupt the body’s naturally powerful immune system. “Cancer is a symptom delivering a message: You need to take better care of yourself—emotionally,

properly,” says Francis. The authors of Cancer Killers, Dr. Charles Majors, Dr. Ben Lerner and Sayer Ji, agree. Up until now, they attest that the war on cancer has been almost exclusively an assault on the disease, rather than an enlightened preventive campaign that clearly identifies and counters how cancer develops. “The battle can only be won by instructing people in how to boost their body’s immune responses to kill cancer cells before they face a full-blown diagnosis and showing them how to aggressively address the hostile exterior agents that turn healthy cells cancerous.” The best winning strategy is to naturally nurture a body—structurally, chemically, energetically, emotionally, and spiritually—so that the inner terrain naturally kills cancer cells and stops them from growing. Singing Heals Our Soul, Sets Us Free

B

efore singing was part of any human culture, it was part of nature. Nature never tries hard; it just is. It grows and blossoms and flows. So does heartfelt singing—as a joyful expression of soul, of one’s essential being. It is giving and sharing. Most of all, it is alive. Singing like this doesn’t ask for effort. But it does ask for courage. In expressing our longings, hopes and love, we may encounter fear, shame, or sorrow. That’s part of the beauty and surprising simplicity of liberating ourselves through song, which can be cheerful, or insightfully confronting the challenging issues in our lives. Some people make every effort to sing eloquently, but the joy of singing is just as fully accessible for those who can’t master the technical qualifications or even carry a tune. All we really need to do to achieve personal satisfaction is to sing what’s inside us, enabling who we are to emerge. That’s why singing is healing; it helps make us whole. Giving emotional space to ourselves in song allows us to be heard in a special way; no two voices are alike because each is exactly suited to the individual. Our innate tendency to sing,

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

like other forms of music, connects us with others and reminds us of ways in which we are attuned to one another. The vibration of a singing voice is the most magical, direct way to connect our internal and external worlds. It’s comforting to note that we can only sing off-key if we compare our voice to another’s. No child ever decides by himself that he can’t sing. A child spontaneously sings, dances, and draws without preconception until an authority figure steps in with a discordant opinion. Singing is a natural phenomenon as intuitive as breathing. It’s our right to sing freely, and so share our hearts and music with the world. As a soaring expression of love it contributes greatly to the well-being of individuals, communities, and society.

HAPPY PARENTS HAPPY KIDS

Renée Peterson Trudeau Explores Soulful Parenting by Meredith Montgomery

he oldest of seven Montessori-inspired children and mother of one, Renée Peterson Trudeau serves as a life balance coach, speaker, and president of Career Strategists, a coaching and consulting firm. Thousands of women in 10 countries participate in Personal Renewal Groups based on her first book, The Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal. Now, in a new book, Nurturing the Soul of Your Family, Trudeau helps empower families to handle the challenges of everyday life with harmony and ease.

most?

Why is it important for families to define what they value

We realize peace by nurturing our hearts and souls with self-care, by slowing down and being gentle with ourselves. It requires us to attune and respond to our own needs and desires in the present moment. Am I responding with compassion when I make mistakes? Am I saying no when I need to say no? Did I ask for and receive help when I needed it? This is self-care in day-to-day life. When we feel nurtured in ways aligned with our deeper needs, we’re able to more fully express our potential and relax into being who we truly are.

It’s empowering for a family to anchor together around one key core value. Once you identify it, you all can make more conscious decisions. The value that my own family has chosen is compassion for one’s self and others. Creativity, spirituality, service, or learning are others. As kids grow into adolescence, it becomes more challenging to maintain balance; there are so many demands on a family’s time and attention. Mentally, we’re often overwhelmed by an expanding scope of activities and decisions. At any age, many of us are just reacting to whatever comes at us. But when we identify the values most important to us, it’s easier to know when to say yes and no to things, so that our actions become aligned with our priorities.

How does such caring show up in family dynamics?

What is behind the rising appeal of living more simply?

How can individuals achieve more peace?

When I’m feeling grumpy or irritable, I know that my inner cup is empty and I’m out of sync with my needs. When we practice self-care, we

Simplicity is alluring at a most basic level of our being; we crave it. We want to invest less energy in making decisions and have more space for life

“Mom, tell them to surprise their kids; listen to them, have fun with them and just spend time with them.” ~ Jonah Trudeau, age 9 to organically unfold. We want to hit the pause button because we are overscheduled, overworked, and overloaded with too much information. It can feel so good to be productive, and American culture rewards output. But we need to be mindful of balancing the harder task of “being” with the seduction of doing, for we are at our most powerful when both of these energies are equal.

Where do we start?

If we are not currently living in alignment with what matters most to us, we can stop what we’re doing and course-correct. We have to define what simplicity looks like for us and can start by just slowing down. Do less to experience more. Unplug from technology. Try spending unscheduled, media-free time together. My family feels most nourished after weekends when we hardly did anything and just enjoyed connecting through simple pleasures.

What role does spirituality play in fostering a healthy family life? I hear many parents say they used to think spirituality was separate from parenting. Then they woke up to the idea that being a parent is a spiritual practice, maybe the most profound one they will ever have. Connecting to the sacred in everyday life yields nurturing gifts we can enjoy with our children, not separately from them.

What is the most valuable advice you can offer to parents?

Pause to breathe in compassion and realize that our outer state is a reflection of our inner state. It helps us release whatever we’re dealing with and reconnect with ourselves and loved ones. Small Daily Practices Make a Huge Difference by Renée Peterson Trudeau

regular spiritual practice grounds us and helps us navigate the challenges of just being human. It helps us stay awake, begin to let go, trust the rhythm and flow of life, and relax into the beauty of our true nature. Create Ritual – Meaningful rituals can be carefully planned events, or casual but regular remembrances such as voicing gratitude before a family meal or greeting one another with a hug. Marking transitions and milestones in the lives of family members likewise connects everyone to the sacredness of daily living. We remember that life is more than to-do lists. Cultivate Stillness – Quiet, private contemplation through stillness, prayer, meditation, or reflection is a daily way to connect with our inner wisdom and/ or embrace a higher power, and can make the whole day better. Practice Service to Others – The more we reach out and are present to one another, the stronger we become and the easier it is to understand our interconnection—that we’re all one. Live in the Present – Many great spiritual teachers believe the answer to everything is to just “be here now,” and

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

that our suffering and emotional distress would end if we simply stopped resisting the present. When we temporarily suspend our desire to change things, we can embrace that where we are is exactly where we’re supposed to be. Choose Happiness – Can we only be happy if things are going our way? Experts suggest that we’re born with the innate capacity to experience inner well-being and joy; it’s our birthright to feel good. We must remember to choose happiness in each present moment.

Cancer

Have You, or Someone You Know, Been Diagnosed with Cancer? by James E. Lemire, M.D.

M

ore than a million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. According to the National Cancer Institute: • 75% of all cancers are diet related. • Cancer is a symptom of a breakdown of body chemistry. • 80% of all cancer cases are related to lifestyle. • 70% of all cancer can be avoided. You do not “get” cancer. You have to create it by what you bring into your internal environment. Most cancers can be traced to environmental and lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol, sunburn, pollution, infection, stress, and obesity. Good nutrition serves to counteract these risk factors. Micronutrients prevent initiation and survival of mutations, reduce tumor size, and keep tumor cells from entering the bloodstream. Diets high in vegetables, herbs, and spices are linked to reduced cancer rates and spread. It also helps to avoid processed, factory-farmed, and overheated foods, restrict calories, opt for fresh organic foods, and take highquality supplements. Strive for an alkaline system. Acid/ alkaline balance is key to health. According to Elaine Cantin, author

20

of The Cantin Ketogenic Diet, you accomplish this by eliminating dairy, grains, sugar, meats, soy, processed foods, genetically modified foods, and artificial sweeteners. Introduce green smoothies and green juicing into your life. The need to maintain the body’s alkalinity is not a new concept. Dr. William Howard Hay, physician who at the turn of the century wrote How to Always Be Well, said, “Intracellular pH at about 7.3” is optimum. Follow a diet and exercise routine that makes your body less acidic; cancer cells can only thrive where the body chemistry is highly acidic. Make the body more alkaline and increase the body’s oxygen-carrying capacity. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygen-rich environment. Add alkaline by eating lots of fresh, uncooked, deep-green leafy vegetables. The more they are cooked, the more acidic they become. Eat fresh fruits in moderation, and only the high antioxidants (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, green apples, pomegranates and such). Avoid high starch and sugar fruits such as strawberries and bananas. Eliminate acids including proteins (meat, fish, milk, eggs, poultry), grains, pasta, and sugars. Cancer loves sugar. Sugar is referred to as a “fertilizer” for cancer.

High blood sugar and insulin increase inflammation, which promotes cancer spread. Conversely, low-carb diets suppress cancer growth. The damage by sugar and other toxins are mitigated by antioxidant and anti-inflammatory foods, including fiber-rich foods, green tea, turmeric, ginger, omega-3 (fish, walnuts, flax), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower), thyme, celery, rosemary, berries, whole citrus, red wine, and dark chocolate. High-quality fish oil, vitamin D3, and curcumin are the best supplements for inflammation. According to Mike Adams, “The Health Ranger,” micronutrients intervene at all stages of cancer, through a wide range of mechanisms, including anti-oxidation and boosting the immune system. Dietary fiber and healthy gut microbes (probiotics) also play vital roles in cancer prevention by neutralizing toxins. Cancer is also promoted by stress, which is relieved with magnesium, B and C complex vitamins, calming herbs, and highquality vegetable protein. We use personalized immunebuilding protocols at the office. Most important: clean the liver, lymphatic system, the colon and the kidneys. The liver has many important functions. It serves as a filter for helping get rid of the dead cancer cells and toxic materials. Without efficient liver cleaning, the toxic tissues will hang around longer, making you feel sick, sluggish, even causing a slight fever. According to Chinese medicine, it is also affected by fiery emotions such as anger, jealousy, fear, and frustration. These are some emotions which sometimes accompany disease. A healthy liver brings joy, laughter and happiness to life, and provides clarity for long-range planning. Another very important part of the immune system is the lymph system.

Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment

It acts as an internal waste disposal system. Due to environmental and daily stresses, many people already have a burdened lymphatic system. So a very important part of thriving is to help the lymphatic system to move. The colon is the body’s largest internal organ. The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) results in an overburdened colon, causing either constipation, which retains toxins— or diarrhea, which purges essential nutrients for health. A healthy colon requires proper nutrition, fiber, and regular cleansing, such as that offered via colonics therapy. The kidneys are our bottom-line organ because they try to accomplish whatever is left undone by other eliminative organs and systems. They strive to balance acid and alkaline, and eliminate through the urine whatever is needed to maintain that balance. They are the seat of essential energy, life essence, or “Chi” according to the Chinese. Finally, remember to unlock the healing power that is within. We are more than just the physical body. We are mind, body, and spirit. Foster and practice good thoughts and attitudes, healthy emotions, faith, and joy. Treat your body to proper diet, exercise, and rest. Do whatever it takes to manage any stress in your life. Summer Reading “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.” —Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

F

or two weeks each summer, I house-sit for my friends Henry and Eleanor while they are on vacation. I have a few assorted light duties as caretaker of home and cat. The rest of the time, I read. I mean that literally. (And literarily.) They have a lovely house, but best of all they have a magnificent number of books, and every moment I am home and have spare time, I am reading. (In fact, I feel a little sulky that I can’t be reading right now, instead of writing about it.) I do not once turn on the television. I read a good bit at home, but this is the place where I read voraciously. It’s the perfect house for reading: quiet, secluded, in a wooded area. No traffic noises or neighbors too close by—just songbirds, crickets, and owls. As it rains a good deal in the summer, that just adds to the perfection of the reading ambiance. And then there is the cat. A contented and well-behaved cat is a great accompaniment to reading, and Morgan the cat appreciates a reader. When I get into bed in the evening, she comes running to hop up next to

22

me, because she knows this is when we read. She knows exactly where to locate herself by my side so I can hold the book with my right hand and pet her with my left hand. This has been our routine for many years. People often talk about their summer reading, whether it’s the perfect “beach book,” something light and absorbing and fun, or assigned reading for school. I like to take on an author or a series, reading my way through a set of books which colors the whole fortnight with a mood or theme. Sometimes I choose my summer reading; sometimes it is chosen for me. There have been times I have innocently mentioned that I have not read a particular book or series, and a pained look has come into the eyes of Henry and Eleanor. When I arrive to begin house-sitting, these books will be neatly, tactfully stacked on my bedside table. I love this habit. Our reading tastes overlap considerably, so I can always take their recommendations to heart with good faith. If an author, book, or series is a favorite of theirs, chances are good that I will enjoy it, too. It was in this way that I came to read the complete works of Jane Austen. Another summer was The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I have read, in various summers, everything I could find of James Thurber, Bill Bryson, Shirley

Jackson from the humorous to the horrific, and all of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot mysteries I could lay my hands on. One wonderful introduction was My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell, a charming and amusing memoir of the famous naturalist’s childhood on the Greek island of Corfu. This led to me pursuing other books by Durrell, which is part of the joy of discovering a new author you love: finding and reading everything else he’s written. My proudest summer-reading accomplishment was reading all seven of the Harry Potter books in nine days. And a nine days’ wonder it was. I missed a great deal of sleep to do so, but I could not put them down. To those of you who read them as they came out: I don’t know how you did it. I wouldn’t have had that kind of patience, and am grateful I could read them all at once. It was a bit like devouring a box of chocolates at one sitting, but in this case worth it. Sometimes the reading is eclectic: Little Lord Fauntleroy, Auntie Mame, A Farewell to Arms, Mrs. Dalloway, Rebecca, Gift From the Sea. Sometimes, I bring a stack of my own books from home. This summer I’m in a European mood: Chocolat and The Girl With No Shadow by Joanne Harris, and Peter Mayle’s French Lessons, to whisk me away to France; I Capture the Castle and Thornyhold, an old favorite about a good witch and her English country cottage, to transport me to Great Britain between the world wars. The transporting is why many of us read: it is a journey of the mind that carries us away to another world that for a time becomes very real. I may not be able to sojourn in a wonderful faroff place, but a good book comes very close. And so the answer to How I Spent My Summer Vacation is: I read. DETECTING DISEASE

Liver and Adrenal Issues Share Symptoms by Dr. Shawn Messonnier

A

drenal and liver diseases can commonly plague pets, with adrenal problems occurring more often in dogs but routinely misdiagnosed, and liver disease more frequently present in cats.

Liver Disease

This inclusive term is used to describe any disorder of the liver. In both dogs and cats, common causes include toxins, infections, metabolic problems and tumors. In cats, infections and fatty liver disease are more likely, while dogs more often experience infections and tumors. Clinically affected pets are usually anorectic (not eating) and lethargic; in severe cases, jaundice may occur. Conventional therapies depend to some extent on the cause, but in general, antibiotics and hospitalization for fluid therapy and forced feeding, often through a stomach tube, are necessary to give the pet the best chances of recovering. Pets with liver cancer are usually diagnosed too late to be a candidate for surgery, unless only one liver lobe is involved, or chemotherapy. More gentle natural therapy often results in curing the condition, even in later stages, depending upon the root cause. The herb milk thistle is well known for its ability to heal liver damage. B vitamins, as well as the nutritional supplements comprising S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and phosphatidylcholine, may also be effective treatments.

mon in middle-aged and older canines, can refer to Addison’s disease or Cushing’s disease—signifying decreased or increased adrenal function, respectively—and are commonly misdiagnosed as liver disease. Addison’s disease, although not prevalent, is often incorrectly diagnosed because its symptoms of reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and weakness are shared with most other diseases. Blood testing can be helpful, but is not always definitive. Cushing’s disease is a more common problem. Signs mimic diabetes and kidney disease, including increases in appetite, thirst and urination. Accurate diagnosis requires specialized blood tests and abdominal sonograms. Conventional treatment for either disease involves lifelong medication. Natural therapies that work to prevent and alleviate such ailments may involve adrenal glandular supplements, milk thistle and herbs such as licorice (for Addison’s disease) or ginseng and magnolia bark (for Cushing’s disease).

Regular laboratory testing is important for a pet to allow for early diagnosis and treatment of potentially life-threatening diseases. If a pet develops liver or adrenal disease, combining conventional therapies with natural remedies usually results in successful treatment of the condition. The Cause and Treatment of Weight Gain by Paula Koger, BSN, MA, DOM

If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. —Lao Tzu

T

here are many reasons diets and dieting don’t work. One of them is that food might not be the cause of weight gain. Or, dieting might work for a while, then the unresolved pattern causing the weight gain overtakes us and weight returns. Like everything else, the amount of weight we carry, whether overweight or underweight, is a reflection of what is going on in every aspect of our lives. It is important to discover and address what weight issues mean to each individual. What are we unconsciously holding in our tissues? It is not so important to have the Hollywood standard of glamour—it is important to be at your best weight to allow you to feel and be the best of health, happiness and love for yourself. Psychosomatic Energetics is a key to finding what is blocking us in achieving ideal health, weight, and happiness. The Reba testing device, combined with the NES body scan, allow us to discover the issues and determine how they are affecting 24

our vitality. The traumatic patterns and events that block our attaining ideal weight also affect our emotional, mental, and spiritual progress, and prevent us from having the energy we require to be happy, productive, and healthy. As Dr. Blanis, MD and founder of Psychosomatic Energetics says, the chakras are not just energy centers, they are autonomic regulatory centers. This means the functioning of our organs and systems are affected by and dependent on them. Reba testing allows us to measure the degree of impact of the blockages of the chakras. When the chakras or energy transport centers are blocked, no amount of surgery or medication can unblock it; the underlying disease progresses, and the weight comes back. Here are the chakras and some of the issues they hold that affect weight and vitality. Chakra 1, located at the base of the spine, relates to low self-esteem, lack of concentration, lack of strength, and being too self-controlled. Blocks in this energy center lead to lack of ability to stick to a diet, or frustrations that drive eating. Illnesses include reproductive, bladder, and orgasmic disorders. Chakra 2 is the next one up from the first chakra. Blocks in

this chakra relate to nervousness or defiance that may drive eating if unresolved. Illnesses include bowel or digestive disorders. Chakra 3. Blocks mean stored frustrations, repressed anger, and isolation. This may led to gallstones, liver disorders, stomach problems, and diabetes, as well as a “tire” around the waist. Chakra 4 is the heart center, and damage occurs from hurts and shocks that are stored. Repeated heart surgeries may be necessary because the issues of hurt are not resolved. It is difficult to love self and others when this energy center is damaged. Hurts tend to be repeated, because like attracts like. What is in you is what shows up for you. Chakra 5, the throat center, is where traumas are stored and create interference with the thyroid function, which in turn affects weight. This is also the center that is blocked when a person has victim tendencies and is often being treated badly by others. The thyroid will test as normal, yet it does not have enough energy. The weight gain pattern includes a pear-shaped body with larger hips and lower abdomen, and the throat area tends to be enlarged. Chakra 6 can be blocked by lack of courage, tenseness, false pride, restlessness, and sadness. Headaches, lack of vision, and eating disorders may be a response to these issues. It can affect the hypothalamus, an organ whose functions include weight control. Hypothalamus stores emotional issues. Chakra 7, the top of the

Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment

head or “crown” chakra, may be closed if a person has to hold on to their position, or are judgmental or overly materialistic. Self-criticalness prevents selflove. Brain or mood disorders of all types can result from this energy blockage. I just talked to a patient who is taking the homeopathic remedies to release the blocks causing her inability to speak up after a lifetime of victimization (Chakra 5). Eating was to stop the pain of being victimized. She said, “I am finding it very easy to speak up with kindness. It is a gift to me to be able to see, know, and respond to my needs and wishes.” For each patient, specific homeopathy is prescribed along with affirmations particular to each block. They contribute to miraculous releases. Dr. Paula Koger, who practices in Dunnellon, will be guest speaker for Unity Church World Day of Prayer at 6:00 on September 11 at Unity of Citrus County, Lecanto, FL (352 -7461270); all are invited. Growing Tropicals by David Y. Goodman

S

ome of our most delectable foods come from the tropics. Bananas, vanilla, coffee, cinnamon, black pepper, chocolate, mangoes, macadamia nuts, turmeric … the list is mind-boggling. Up north, you can basically grow a few dozen decent fruits. In the tropics, you can grow hundreds, even thousands, of delicacies. Growing up in South Florida, I split open coconuts in my Grandpop’s yard, picked up fallen fruit beneath the shade of towering mango trees, ate thick slices of Grandma’s fresh key lime pie during the holidays, and harvested fresh pineapples from the back yard. Then I moved north and had a horrible realization: this half of Florida ain’t in the tropics. The first summer I was in my new house in Marion County, I planted papaya, guava, and mango trees in the yard, just to see how they would do. They died. But my dream of building a tropical paradise didn’t. When overnight lows dip below freezing, most tropical plants give up the ghost and return to the Great Equator in the Sky. Some of them are a little hardier, like the astounding jabuticaba tree, or the tough-as-nails pineapple … but not by much. In a climate where freezes happen—and sometimes reach down into the low teens—how can you grow tropical plants without building an expensive greenhouse or hauling pots in and out of your house? Thermal mass, baby! Your Yard Contains a Tiny Piece of the Tropics Wait—what? Yep. Pretty much

26

every property has a tiny piece that maintains tropical, or close to tropical, conditions year-round. You just have to find it. Now, before you go get a forked stick and start wandering around doing that dowser thing, finding the tropical spot is usually easy. Find the south-facing wall of your house. Does it have sun on it during the winter? You’ve found your tropics. Do you have a swimming pool? The patio between it and the house— chances are it’s tropical. Water and walls hold a lot of solar energy and warmth, which they release slowly during the night, creating “microclimates” in their immediate vicinity. Fences and tree canopies, slopes and indentations, rock piles and roof overhangs: all of these create microclimates, though they’re not as impressive as bodies of water or warm walls. I got a first-hand education on the power of tree canopy when I planted two small citrus trees about 25 feet from each other. One was just under the canopy of an oak tree, the other was surrounded only by grass. The former got through a winter with just a touch of frost damage, and the second froze almost to the ground. I tested this again with cattley guavas. One was out in the open, the other at a base of an oak—the same thing happened. You can grow tender plants in the shade that would never thrive in the open. Anything that stands between your plants and the icy cold of space on a freezing night is your ally. Think of that before you remove a large tree! You might be dooming nearby citrus or other tropical/sub-

tropical species. Dave Taylor, owner of the excellent Taylor Gardens Nursery, told me he has eaten wonderful avocados grown in Marion County. “A coldhardy variety,” I asked, “like Mexicola or Lula?” “No,” Dave replied, “this gal is growing three regular avocado trees on a strip of ground between her swimming pool and the south wall of her house. They just don’t freeze!” She found her tiny piece of the tropics. If you live in the city, your whole yard might even be a zone warmer than advertised. The urban heat effect is quite impressive. Back to my own tropical paradise. When I realized the remarkable power of a south-facing wall, I did an experiment. I planted a key lime tree about four feet from the back of the south side of my house. That winter, we had a night that hit the low teens. About a week later, it looked like someone had spray-painted one half of the tree brown. The side within two feet of the wall was lush, green and untouched—and the other side was cooked by frost. This was a valuable lesson: it meant my strip of the tropics extended two feet from the back of the house. That being the case, it was time to get busy! The next spring, I planted guavas, lemons, papaya, malanga, and pineapples tightly together right against the wall. I also moved the key lime (which had survived its ordeal) to flat against the wall and tied its branches to a trellis to keep the entire plane of the tree within the Magical Tropical Window. I don’t cover them, hang them with Christmas lights, or leave the sprinkler running. I just let thermal mass work in my favor. On Christmas that year, we ate lemons and papaya. Right now I have pineapples ripening; they’ve been against that wall for a couple of years and are finally fruiting. Some trees are obviously way too big to jam up against the wall, but others can be trained. For instance, I wouldn’t try a jackfruit or a tropical almond, but you could pull off a dwarf mango or a Surinam cherry in a heartbeat.

Printed on recycled paper to protect the environment

Ask anyone if you can grow those trees here and they’ll shout, “That’s impossible!” It isn’t! Try it and see. If you love the tropics as I do, find your microclimate and start building paradise. If you pull it off, let me know and I’ll share Grandma’s key lime pie recipe. ©2013 David Y. Goodman. Unity for All Races, Nations, Species by David Wolf, Ph.D.

R

acism is certainly in the news these days. And commonly we hear about, and maybe experience, pain, anger and sadness related to sexism, nationalism, ageism and other isms. Proposed solutions revolve around an understanding that “Even though I’m white, and you’re black, we can get along fine … The fact that I’m a man and you’re a woman; I’m American and you’re Russian … need not cause divisiveness between us.” In the light of ancient sources of wisdom, such an approach is ineffectual, at best. The mentality of the paradigm itself is founded in illusion, the misidentification of the self with the body. Realizing that we are not our bodies, we understand that I’m not a man, I’m not white, I’m not American; you’re not black, female, Iranian. Such an awareness is a basis for genuine unity, on the spiritual platform. According to the Bhagavad-gita, “As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from childhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death.” Our bodies are vehicles that continually change. Imagine that I’m driving a 10-year-old blue Toyota and I think, “I’m 10 years old, blue, and Japanese,” and you’re driving a twoyear-old red Volkswagen, and I think, “You’re a two-year-old red German.” Clearly I’m in illusion, based on false identification of the self with the vehicle. We care for the vehicles, of course, because they aid us on our journey of self-realization—but if in the process of taking care of the body/vehicle we begin to think that we are the car/body, rather than the driver of the car, then such illusion

28

likely will be a cause of difficulty, not enlightenment or interpersonal harmony. Jane Addams and the Beginnings of Social Work Much of my educational background is in social work, a home for advocacy against the various isms mentioned above. I was encouraged when I found this autobiographical statement from Jane Addams, a prominent founder of modern social work: “We had been to see a bull fight rendered in the most magnificent Spanish style, where greatly to my surprise and horror, I found that I had seen, with comparative indifference, five bulls and many more horses killed.” Jane’s companions were horrified by the needless killing, although Jane “had not thought much about the bloodshed.” Later in the day, however, “the natural and inevitable reaction came and in deep chagrin I felt myself tried and condemned, not only by this disgusting experience, but by the entire moral situation which it revealed.” Racism, Humanitarianism, Speciesism Jane’s impetus to develop the field of social work was founded in aversion to another ism—speciesism— discrimination based on species. Like other isms, speciesism marginalizes sentient beings who don’t fit under the rubric of one’s group. For example, racism is concern about the welfare of one particular race, and humanitarianism is concern about the well-being of one species. A racist is interested in those whose body is classified in the same race

as his, and a humanitarian’s care is focused on those whose bodies are categorized in the same species as his. Those identified with a different race, or species, may be disregarded, exploited, perhaps killed, or at least treated with lower standards. Research has shown a strong connection between violence and views towards animals. Many human rights activists have written about the connection between speciesism and other isms. Alice Walker, commenting on Marjorie Spiegel’s book The Dreaded Comparison: Human and Animal Slavery, wrote, “The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men.” Dick Gregory, under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, became committed to nonviolence, and he applied this ideal to not killing animals for food. Isaac Bashevis Singer narrated about Herman, a fictional character: “As often as Herman had witnessed the slaughter of animals and fish, he always had the same thought: in their behavior toward creatures, all men were Nazis.” Thus, as we cultivate selfrealization, and attempt to transcend strife based on forgetfulness of our spiritual identity, recognition of the essential oneness of life within all species can serve us well in rising above the malicious influences of isms of all sorts. ©2013 David B. Nature’s Antibiotics Recover Health with Less Risk by Kathleen Barnes

When Use Becomes Overuse

In recent years, conventional medicine has increasingly used antibiotics as a universal remedy against all kinds of microbial attacks—even though they are ineffective against anything except bacterial infections. It’s best to use them selectively and cautiously when nothing else will do the job, because by definition, they are “opposed to life.” The worst-case scenario is what we have now: overuse creating “superbugs,” able to multiply out of control, sometimes with fatal consequences, even when treated with antibiotics that used to work. “Antibiotics are helpful and effective when used properly when there is a bacterial infection such as strep throat, urinary tract infection, bacterial pneumonia or a wound that has become infected,” explains Doctor of Naturopathy Trevor Holly Cates, of Waldorf Astoria Spa, in Park City, Utah. “But antibiotics are so overused and overprescribed that bacteria are changing in ways to resist them. This has become a significant public health problem.” National and global public health officials have expressed increasing concerns about dangers posed by such bacteria, including methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), which are often transmitted between patients in hospital settings, and a multiantibiotic-resistant form of tuberculosis. The problem is compounded by the use of antibiotics to enhance

www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

growth and production in livestock. A variety of superbugs have been found in meat, poultry and milk products, according to the nonprofits Center for Science in the Public Interest and Environmental Working Group. Chris Kilham, a worldwide medicine hunter who teaches ethnobotany at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, explains the transmission. “When you eat conventionally raised meat, you’re not getting antibiotics, but you are getting bits of self-replicating genetic material that transfer antibiotic resistance to your body, which can prove fatal.”

Preferred Alternatives

Fortunately, there are many natural substances that have proven to be effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi and other infectious microbial pathogens—all without dangerous side effects. Here’s a short list: Propolis, sometimes called “bee glue,” produced by bees to seal their hives and protect them from infections, is “the single most powerful antimicrobial we have in the plant kingdom,” advises Kilham. That claim is backed by numerous studies from institutions such as Britain’s National Heart and Long Institute, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and Harokopio University, in Greece. In 2005, a study by Turkey’s Hacettepe University showed that propolis killed both MRSA and VRE bacteria. Other studies by Italy’s University of Milan have shown propolis’ effective-

ness in combating upper respiratory infections and candida albicans fungal infections. Propolis is also available in pill form. Pelargonium sidoides is a favored option for Cates to abbreviate both the duration and severity of cold and flu, including any lingering cough or sore throat. This South African medicinal is also known as African geranium. Usually used in tincture form, it’s also useful against a large range of microbial infections. One study from the Russian Institute of Pulmonology reported that nearly 70 percent of participating adults with bronchitis received relief within four days—more than double those who became well taking a placebo. Olive leaf extract was first mentioned in the Bible; recent research confirms its effectiveness against a wide variety of microbial infections. A U.S. Department of Agriculture study published in the Journal of Food Science confirms that olive leaf extract is effective in fighting food-borne pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli, labeling it a broad-spectrum antimicrobial. New York University School of Medicine research published in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications showed that olive leaf extract reversed many HIV-related changes in the immune system. Retired medical journalist Dr. Morton Walker, author of Nature’s Antibiotic: Olive Leaf Extract, wrote that olive leaf extract “inhibits the growth of every virus, bacterium, fungus, yeast and protozoan it was tested against … and is effective against a minimum of 56 disease-causing organisms.” In a worst-case scenario, “If antibiotics are the only alternative to treat a lab-confirmed bacterial infection, it’s vital to replace the beneficial intestinal bacteria inevitably wiped out by the drug,” concludes Cates. “Sometimes a few servings of a good natural yogurt will suffice. If not, look for a high-quality probiotic to restore the digestive system’s natural bacterial colony.” Kathleen Barnes is a natural health advocate, author and book publisher (KathleenBarnes.com).
