F
or people seeking a natural way to keep slightly elevated blood pressure in check, eating a handful of raisins each day might do the trick. New data presented at the American College of Cardiology 61st Annual Scientific Session suggest that among adults with hypertension, routine consumption of raisins may lower readings, especially compared with eating other common snacks. The researchers noted that raisins are packed with potassium, which is known to lower blood pressure, and are also a good source of antioxidant dietary fiber, which may favorably alter the biochemistry of blood vessels, enabling them to be less stiff. The study helps validate some current nutrient recommendations, such as 60 raisins—about a handful, containing one gram of fiber and 212 milligrams of potassium—as being helpful in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in three (28 percent) of American adults have prehypertension, defined as a systolic pressure from 120 to 139 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or a diastolic pressure from 80 to 89 mm Hg. Researchers cautioned that their study was small; larger trials are needed.
Giving Begets Happiness at Every Age
“T
o give is better than to receive,” is a maxim that appears to hold true even for the very young. A new study co-authored by three psychologists at Canada’s University of British Columbia observes that giving makes toddlers happier. The study, published in PLOS One, an online journal of the Public Library of Science, found that toddlers younger than 2 were happier when giving treats to others than when receiving them. They were also happier when they gave their own treats away, rather than an identical treat that didn’t belong to them.

healthbriefs One-Size Meditation Does Not Fit All
A
n intriguing study recently posted online by Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing, suggests that new meditators are most likely to stick with the practice and reap its healthful benefits if they select methods with which they are most comfortable, rather than those that are most popular. In one of the first studies to compare meditation techniques head-to-head, author Adam Burke, a professor of health education at San Francisco State University and the director of its Institute for Holistic Health Studies, taught 247 participants four popular methods—mantra, mindfulness, Zen, and qigong visualization. He asked them to choose which they preferred to practice at home for six weeks before techniques were evaluated. The simpler methods, mantra and mindfulness, each were preferred by 31 percent of study participants. Zen and qigong were selected by about 22 percent and 15 percent, respectively. Burke says the results showed the value of providing people new to meditation simpler and more accessible methods, and also emphasized that no one technique is best for everyone. He hopes to see more comparative meditation studies, especially to determine if particular methods are better at addressing specific health issues such as addiction. “If that’s the case,” he advises, “healthcare professionals would be able to guide patients toward techniques that will be most effective for them. Additional studies are also needed to determine if there is a way to predict which method will be best suited for any particular individual.”
A Wise Man’s Gift for Arthritis Sufferers
F
rankincense, an aromatic resin obtained from Boswellia trees native to Africa, is an age-old herbal remedy that may help alleviate the pain of arthritis, according to scientists at Cardiff University, in Wales. “The search for new ways of relieving the symptoms of inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis is a long and difficult one,” says Dr. Emma Blain, who led the research with co-investigators Professor Vic Duance, from Cardiff University’s School of Biosciences, and Dr. Ahmed Ali, of the Compton Group. The team believes they have been able to demonstrate that treatment with an extract of Boswellia frereana—a rare frankincense species—inhibits the production of key inflammatory molecules and helps prevent the breakdown of cartilage tissue that causes the condition. The African Somali people have long used extracts of frankincense as a traditional remedy for arthritis. “Our research achieved the use of innovative chemical extraction techniques to determine the active ingredient in frankincense,” says Ali. “We will now be able to further characterize the chemical entity and compare its success against other anti-inflammatory drugs used for treating the condition.”

Nutty Way to Help Preserve Cognition
W
alnut consumption is associated with better memory scores and cognitive function, according to recent findings published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. In the Prevención con Dieta Mediterrnáea study, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Health, results show that a Mediterranean diet, supplemented with olive oil or one ounce of mixed nuts, half of which are walnuts, is more beneficial than a low-fat diet when it comes to body weight, blood pressure, insulin resistance and systemic inflammation. The nutrient-dense walnuts provide antioxidants and alphalinolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. Both are key nutrients with anti-inflammatory properties that help protect brain cells from the oxidative damage associated with cognitive decline.

Citrus Fruits Lower Risk of Stroke

opular winter citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit, come with an unexpected health benefit: eating them may lower the risk of ischemic strokes (clots), especially in women, according to a study reported in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association. The researchers analyzed 14 years of follow-up data from the National Institutes of Health Nurses’ Health Study, which included 69,622 women who reported their food intake every four years, including details on fruit and vegetable consumption. The study discovered that a high intake of flavanones, a subclass of flavonoids found in the greatest concentrations in oranges and grapefruit, was associated with a 19 percent lower risk of ischemic stroke. In the study, the presence of flavanones came primarily from oranges and orange juice (82 percent) and grapefruit and grapefruit juice (14 percent). However, the researchers recommended that consumers increase their citrus fruit intake, rather than juice consumption, to avoid the sweeteners in many commercial juices. In another study, researchers from the University of Western Ontario discovered that a tangerine flavonoid, nobiletin, appears to help prevent obesity and protect against Type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. When the researchers fed mice a “Western” diet high in fats and simple sugars, they became obese, showing all the signs associated with metabolic syndrome: elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, high blood levels of insulin and glucose, and fatty livers. A second group of mice—fed the same unhealthy diet, but with nobiletin added—experienced no symptoms of metabolic syndrome and gained weight normally. Ingesting nobiletin also prevented the buildup of fat in the liver by stimulating genes that help burn excess body fat, while inhibiting genes responsible for manufacturing it.
Pitfalls of No-Fat Salad Dressings

or our readers who are thinking about balancing a rich holiday meal by choosing a low- or no-fat salad dressing, consider this: To get the most nutrients from leafy greens and vegetables, we need to pair them with a healthy fat. A recent Purdue University study showed that the more “good” fat there was in a salad, the more carotenoids diners absorbed. The researchers found that vegetable oils rich in monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, or polyunsaturated fats such as sunflower oil, help the body absorb essential carotenoids and other nutrients and increase their bioavailability in the intestines. The study also found that eating bread with butter with a salad was also beneficial, although to a lesser extent.

W
hat I see is an infinite web of relationship, flung across the vastness of space like a luminous net. It is made of energy, not thread. As I look, I can see light moving through it as a pulse moves through veins. What I see “out there” is no different from what I feel inside. There is a living hum that might be coming from my neurons, but might just as well be coming from the furnace of the stars. When I look up at them, there is a small commotion in my bones as the ashes of dead stars that house my marrow rise up like metal filings toward the magnet of their living kin. Where am I in this picture? I am all over the place. I am up there, down here, inside and outside of my skin. How could I ever be alone? I am part of a web that is pure relationship, with energy available to me that has been around since the universe was born. Where is God in this picture? God is all over the place. God is up there, down here, inside and outside of my
skin. God is the web, the energy, the space, the light—not captured in them, as if any one of those concepts was more real than what unites them—but revealed in that singular, vast net of relationship that animates everything that is. It is not enough for me to proclaim that God is responsible for all of this unity. Instead, I want to proclaim that God is the unity—the very energy, the very intelligence, the very elegance and passion that make it all go. This is the God who is not somewhere, but everywhere; the God who may be prayed to in all directions at once. The “I am who I am,” in whom everything else abides. For the moment, we see through a glass darkly. We live in the illusion that we are all separate “I ams.” When the fog finally clears, we shall know that there is only One. Conscious Communication During the Holidays by Marie Glasheen
W
hy do people have such a hard time communicating during the holidays? Lately, I have been hearing this question frequently. During this time of year, many people are filled with excitement about enjoying the season with friends and loved ones, but they also feel the increased sense of pressure and anxiety that the season tends to bring on. For many people, it’s generally challenging to communicate with their family members. This difficulty increases during holiday times because we develop an expectation to enjoy each other’s company. The human tendency, however, is to rigidly remain in the same patterns, habits and dynamics that already exist in the relationship. Often, instead of seeing who is there in relationship with us, we see who we think that person is. We lose a sense of freshness and spirit of discovery. The nature of the self is to expand, and we tend to stifle this nature by putting ourselves and others
into a tight box. While you are preparing for your holiday gatherings, take the time to think about the family members with whom you will be interacting. Deeply consider who they really are, as a spirit soul having a human experience, and experiencing essentially the same types of struggles as yourself. They might be conditioned with different perspectives and points of view than you. Consider how you might learn from embracing and valuing those differences, and appreciate the commonality of your journey of selfrealization. A tip for us to transform our experience of others is to realize that whatever it is they are saying is about them, rather than about us. From that perspective, we can enter their space and join with them in their world. In this way, we stop giving our power away to others, and no longer get triggered by them when they are just expressing themselves. In that sacred space, there is much more room for expansion and
awareness-raising. We can also look at our expectations. “I expect my Mom to treat me with respect.” “I expect my Dad to understand me.” “I expect my brother to see who I am.” When we are emotionally attached to those expectations and we insist on others conforming to our expectations, we are fighting reality, and creating insanity. From those attachments to have reality different from what it is, we create and experience disappointment, frustration, and resentment. Ask yourself: how would my experience of life and self, and Mom, be different, if I let go of the expectation that my Mom should respect my life choices more than she currently does? Let’s develop a vision of this holiday season being a time of deep connection, a time to truly enter and understand (not necessarily agree with) the world of those people we call family—an opportunity for creating safe and sacred space in our relationships. What if I could see them and me from God’s perspective? What if during my time with them I could create a lasting impact and influence our spiritual awakening? We all have the power within ourselves to create the relationships we want, and I stand strongly for that. The holidays offer many opportunities to be the change we want to see in the world, and in our relations. I encourage you to try it out. Let go of your attachments to how others “should be.” In doing so, notice your experience in creating truly holy days. uring this holiday season, many of us make a mad dash (or many) to the shops to buy gifts for each other. Imagine being able to give a priceless gift that will not require a trip to the mall, a shopping cart, a credit card, or cash in hand. This priceless gift will benefit you just as much as or even more so than the receiver. The priceless gift that I’m speaking of is the gift of forgiveness. While the pleasure of exchanging material gifts is thrilling, it’s short-lived—and the freedom brought by forgiveness is everlasting. As I read these words from my dear friend and colleague Colleen Griffin, the truth that they represent is very clear. “Forgiveness can change your life. It is one of the Treasures of the Tao. Forgiveness does not mean you erase the past, or forget what has happened. It doesn’t even mean the other person will change their behavior— you cannot control that. Merry Christmas, Movie House
I
have many Christmas traditions, and movies are a major part of them. I have about a dozen mustwatch Christmas films, without which it just isn’t the holiday season. I love lighting candles and sitting beside a blazing fire with a cup of Russian tea and a plate of pecan balls to enjoy my Yuletide filmfest by the glow of the Christmas tree. The first one I remember seeing, with my mother when I was a child, was Miracle On 34th Street, the 1947 original. It’s her favorite Christmas movie, and we watched it together every year. It’s the first Christmas movie I watch every season, as it opens on Thanksgiving Day and thus seems the appropriate kickoff to my holiday filmfest. The next to become a childhood tradition was A Christmas Story. This was my dad’s favorite Christmas movie. He loved it as I did, and we always watched it together. My mother doesn’t care for A Christmas Story. It isn’t her type of humor, and Randy and the mashed potatoes upset her too much. And she really was worried that Ralphie would shoot his eye out. She always found other things to do while my dad and I watched it. That was all right; she and I had Miracle On 34th Street. I think people love A Christmas Story so much because it’s one of the few holiday movies that makes you laugh, not cry. Not that

Christmas movies are habitually sad, just sentimental. They tug at your heartstrings. But A Christmas Story is funny, real, and nostalgic in a way that doesn’t make you weepy. It’s a Wonderful Life was the next to become a tradition. I vividly remember the first time I saw it: Christmas Eve when I was 12, at my grandmother’s house. I knew it was something special and fell in love with it right away. I often save it for my last movie of the holidays. It’s a perfect New Year’s movie: makes you think about your life and your place in this world. Another good one for that purpose is A Christmas Carol. I’ve seen many adaptations of it, but I think I’m fondest of the 1999 version with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge ... though really, nothing beats the book. As for books, my favorite as a child was Little Women, still beloved to me in all adaptations, including the movie versions. It is not specifically a Christmas movie, but it opens at Christmas (which is, in fact, the first word in the book), so it also is part of my holiday filmfest. Every year I watch the 1949 version, which I saw as a teenager, and the 1994 version, which my grandmother and I went to see when I was in college. Also in college, long before I saw The Bishop’s Wife, I saw its remake, The Preacher’s Wife. Both are wonderful. I played my Preacher’s
Wife soundtrack CD so many times over the years, I wore it out. Fantastic gospel music, joyous for any time of year. As for other Christmas musicals, somehow I came to White Christmas late in life. I don’t think I saw it in its entirety until I was a young adult. It’s inexplicable: I’ve always adored Bing Crosby and old movies, I’ve watched The Bell’s of St. Mary’s every year from childhood on—but the king of Bing movies about Christmas? Don’t know why I wasn’t raised on it. But now I watch it every year. I discovered other classic Christmas movies as an adult: Christmas in Connecticut, The Shop Around the Corner, and Meet Me In St. Louis, now one of my all-time favorites. These and all the rest are part of my Christmas traditions. Even if I can’t devote my full attention to them, they’re playing in the background while I’m decorating the tree, wrapping gifts, addressing cards, or baking cookies. They’re part of my own holiday soundtrack. I love all these movies, these beautiful moving pictures set to lovely music and filled with memorable words, because they are sweetly sentimental, charming, nostalgic, old-fashioned, timeless, touching, heartwarming, hopeful, and joyous ... full of faith, family, friends, and a festive spirit ... what Christmas should be. My friend Gentleman Skip adores It’s a Wonderful Life as much as I do. Years ago when we were at the Magic Kingdom during the holidays, he ran the length of Main Street U.S.A. screaming, “Merry Christmas, Emporium! Merry Christmas, movie house!” (He does a pretty great Jimmy Stewart impression, too.) It was epic. Like the scene to which it was an homage, it remains one of my favorite holiday memories ever. And so, like Gentleman Skip and George Bailey, I wish a Merry Christmas to the movie house, because it so often has been part of a Merry Christmas for me. And a Merry Christmas to you, too.

How Unconditional Love Harmonizes Our World Marci Shimoff Explores its Transformative Power by Judith Fertig
A

What is the old way of looking at love, versus the new paradigm shift you propose? We’ve been trained to think of love solely as energy between two people, usually experienced as conditional love—we feel love if the other person agrees with us, treats us a particular way or loves us back. But love is actually the essence of who we are, and when we live in a state of unconditional love, what I call “love for no reason,” we experience our essence that is love, which doesn’t depend on another person, situation or romantic partner. It is the core of every spiritual tradition.
Why do our ways of loving often seem inadequate? We each have a “love set-point,” the upper limit of our ability to give and receive love. We can’t feel more love by trying to change the outside—by relying on others to fill us up—because

it will never work in the long run. We need to raise our love set-point higher; then we experience everything more through the eyes of love.
Do challenging economic times help us grow spiritually? We can use any life challenges to help us grow and find fresh avenues of lasting fulfillment. Success and money don’t guarantee happiness, and I know that from my own wake-up call. In 1998, I had three of my Chicken Soup for the Soul books on The New York Times bestseller list at the same time. One day, I spoke to 8,000 people and autographed 5,432 books and felt like an author rock star. Yet when I returned to my hotel room that night, I burst into tears. All of the success was great, but it still hadn’t made me happy. That’s when I began my intensive study of happiness and love.
Does science support our capacity to daily experience and deepen a love for all things? Science is finding that there is a neurophysiology of love. Studies by researchers in major institutions worldwide show that we can do simple things like breathe more deeply, walk barefoot on earth, listen to uplifting music, or practice meditation that will support us in experiencing more unconditional love. These activities create greater heart rhythm coherence and new neural pathways in the brain.
How does having a heart that’s open to unconditional love benefit us? The Institute of HeartMath has discovered that the magnetic field generated by the heart—what’s measured on a magnetometer—is 5,000 times stronger than that of the brain. HeartMath research has also demonstrated that when we’re in a positive emotional state, our hearts beat in a coherent rhythm that causes all the other systems in the body—including the brain, immune system, and hormones—to work more efficiently and harmoniously. Cancer: Preventing and Deactiviting It by Dr. Paula Koger, RN, MA, DOM

W
hen it comes to cancer and its traditional treatment in the U.S., chemotherapy, although there are exceptions and about 25% do respond, an estimated 75% die of chemo’s side effects such as kidney and liver failure. More than a half-million people in the U.S. die each year from cancer and its treatments. Yet, I would say it is a preventable disease. In the spirit of helping others, not of casting aspersion on those who are suffering/have suffered from cancer, I want to say it is simply time to take a look at taking responsibility for what you can do to prevent the progressive weakening of the immune system which allows for the activation of cancer. Cancer is always there as a potential. Its survival and activation depend on certain conditions in the body being supportive of its growth. Cancer thrives on: n Acid pH in body n Stresses n Unresolved traumas n Weak immunity n Toxins n Pathogens Dr. Royal R. Rife developed his technology back in the 1920s

and identified virions as one of the etiological pathogens for cancer cells when conditions are right for them to multiply. He invented an electrical impulse therapy that could reduce the virions when the conditions of the body were right for good health. I was with my best friend one day before I entered training in acupuncture and alternative medicine. Seeking my advice, she asked me, “What can I do? I have breast cancer.” I was a nursing professor who was trained by the cut-and-drug medical model, and I did not know much about what she could do to heal herself naturally. However, I did know about the macrobiotic diet and the cooking school founded by Misho Kusi. We went together and trained at the school. She got onto the diet, and her cancer went into remission and responded to a small amount of radiation. One day, though, she went on a chocolate and junk-food binge. She died a year or so later, even with chemo. She had thrived on the healthy diet because it corrected the terrain imbalance. Her death inspired me to look for other solutions to the complex causes of cancer. I had always known that one of the reasons for the development of cancer is emotional traumas stored in the body. I studied the work of Dr. Hamer, a German MD who developed testicular cancer after his son was killed in an auto accident. He was able to heal his cancer easily when he released this painful memory. He developed a method of finding the cancers on a CT scan of the brain, as they can be seen as scars caused by
traumas or some other precipitating event. The cancer then responds well to other cancer therapies. My research led me to start doing extensive computerized tests and kinesiology to detect the presence of cancer-causing factors before they reach the clinically detectable stage. It is a simple, non-invasive energy assessment and scanning. This type of early detection is like finding the disease on the radar screen and intervening before it becomes a fullfledged disease. Once you see what needs to be addressed, a program can be customized to treat the body/mind/ spirit before you become too sick to respond easily. We have to change and balance the terrain, release the stressors, and treat the pathogens and toxins that are weakening the body. Unexpected Upside Media Gadgets Can Boost Family Connections by Lisa Marshall
W
itness a gadget-obsessed family at the dinner table and it is easy to conclude that technology is fracturing family life: Mom’s emailing her boss; Dad’s watching a YouTube video on his tablet; sister’s texting her boyfriend; and little brother is playing Angry Birds on his smart phone. No one is talking with each other. But dysfunctional dinner habits aside, it appears cell and Internet technologies haven’t turned out to be as harmful as once predicted. “When we started this research, the dominant thought was that Internet technology would make us lonely, socially isolated and threaten our family lives,” says Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. “We have been asking people about this now for 12 years in our surveys and the dominant answer is ‘Actually, we feel more connected with our families than we did before.’” Web-conferencing systems

such as Skype have enabled family members across the globe to chat for free and also see each other. Social networking sites such as Facebook have enabled previously out-of-touch siblings to share photos and revive contact. According to Pew studies since 2008, cell phones have led married couples to talk more during the day and parents to maintain more open lines of communication with their kids. “There always seems to be anxiety in raising a teen, and now a lot of that can be alleviated,” says Larry Rosen, Ph.D., a research psychologist at California State University and author of Me, MySpace, and I: Parenting the Net Generation. “A scared mom or dad can text their kid, saying ‘R U OK?’ and get a one-word answer back, whereas before that kid would have had to find a pay phone, maybe wouldn’t have done it, and Mom and Dad would have panicked.” Rosen’s own research suggests that social networking can actually
teach teens to be more empathetic, a trait that enhances their bonds with family members. For example, a cousin will post on Facebook that her cat died, then the teen responds warmly and their bond tightens. The teen gains empathy that translates into face-to-face experiences as well. “Research from the Pew Center has shown that active social networkers tend to have more friends and support and be more involved with their communities and families,” Rainie maintains. On the other hand, cautionary studies from the Kaiser Family Foundation suggest that kids unhealthily obsessed with media tend to have lower grades and get into trouble at school. Overall, according to a 2011 study by the Barna Group, a Ventura, California, research firm, 32 percent of parents and 47 percent of teens say technology has made their family life better, while 18 percent of parents and 6 percent of teens say it has worsened, because the news is not all good. Consider how, instead of sitting down to watch a show together, family members often are in a room or vehicle watching their own show on their own tiny screen. “People miss social moments around them because they are communicating with the network inside the screen, rather than the world immediately surrounding them,” says Rainie. On the flip side, Rainie notes, families often share those moments with each other, too, such as a funny YouTube video or a picture on Facebook. Rosen cautions that the smart phone could be a pivotal game-changer if consumers aren’t careful. “We are already finding that most people younger than age 40 check their phones every 15 minutes or less, and if they can’t, they become highly anxious. Their whole social world appears channeled through this device, and that is worrisome.” Both Rosen and Rainie stress that the key to making any technology a positive for family dynamics is to set boundaries at the outset and know

when to unplug. Here are some guidelines to consider. Cell phones. Everyone can check their phone messages before dinner and then power it down while the family is eating. Don’t use phones in bed, or in the hour before sleeping, which can be particularly detrimental to a teen’s rest, Rosen’s research shows. Facebook. “When your child says, ‘All of my friends are on Facebook and I feel left out,’ that is probably the time to let them join Facebook,” advises Rosen. Reserve the right to look at their page periodically with them. Each parent and child pair can decide if they should “friend” each other, but don’t assume that gives a parent a backstage pass to the child’s personal life. Pew reports that 80 percent of parents whose children use social media have friended their child. However, “Insisting that your child friend you on Facebook is often an invitation for them to set up a phantom, or fake page,” notes Rosen. Smart phones and tablets. Set specific times to ban technology. “As couples, we used to retire to bed at night and watch TV and talk. Now we watch TV, check our phone, and play Words with Friends games, and that has taken the place of intimate communication.” It helps to set specific times to check the phone and leave it off for big chunks of time. Mindful Holiday Traditions Simple Ways to Add Meaning and Family-Centered Fun by Barbara Amrhein

oo many winter holidays whiz by in a blur of presents, parties and rich foods, muting the season’s true messages of love, hope and peace. By slowing down and refocusing on what makes this time of year so special, we can help our children—and ourselves—create fresh, meaningful traditions and experience genuine joy. “If the spirit of the season at your home is more ‘Gimme, take me, buy me,’ instead of ‘Deck the halls,’ don’t despair,” advises internationally renowned educator and child expert Michele Borba, Ph.D., author of The Big Book of Parenting Solutions:101 Answers to Your Everyday Challenges and Wildest Worries. “There are more subtle ways to encourage your kids to appreciate the greatest gifts of the holiday season. The simplest way is to focus on gifts of the heart and letting your kids be participants, not just recipients.” Try these tips for helping youngsters co-create traditions that celebrate family, friends, sharing with others and the holidays’ festive delights. Emphasize experiences, not things. Presents can never take the place of presence. Years from now, children will rarely recall what they unwrapped, but will remember special times spent together as a family. Take a nature walk to collect pinecones and other seasonal items for holiday décor. Designate a Family Night and let the kids choose the activity, like seeing a movie or a holiday performance such as The Nutcracker, playing a favorite board game, or building a gingerbread house. At dinner, ask youngsters to relate their favorite holiday memories, and then build upon their responses to plan this year’s celebrations.

Treat cards as treasured gifts. Gather the family ‘round when opening cards from others, catching up on their news, and recalling funny or enjoyable shared moments. Skype calls and videos offer pleasurable immediacy while mailed cards become appreciated, permanent mementos. Encourage children to create handmade or personalized cards for grandparents and other relatives, enclosing photos or drawings and a short note describing the reasons that person means so much to them. Hand deliver other cards to neighbors, accompanied by a plate of homemade, healthy treats. Children can also send cards to military personnel overseas via a Red Cross program at Tinyurl. com/HolidayHeroMail. Practice creative giving. Adopt a less fortunate family or child for the holidays (local churches or social service agencies can provide information) and ask youngsters to be “Santa’s little
helpers” by picking out and thoughtfully wrapping books, toys and other gifts. Help children research good causes and earmark a small amount of money for them to gift to the cause of their choice, such as an animal shelter or other local nonprofit. Honor the gift of time, as well: Youngsters who spend a few hours helping out at a food pantry, caroling at a nursing home or wrapping gifts for Toys for Tots will experience and remember the true joy of giving. Nurture a sense of the spiritual. Worship services aren’t the only venue for sharing family values and beliefs with children. On the night of the Winter Solstice, December 21—the shortest day and longest night of the year—enjoy dinner by candlelight. Afterwards, stargaze in the backyard and make some holiday wishes. On another evening, turn off all the lights except the Christmas tree, menorah or other special candles and talk quietly about your blessings. Listening to a CD of carols from around the world reinforces a spirit of unity and invites lively discussions about how other cultures observe their holidays. Celebrate the season’s sights, sounds and fun. Ask children to help choose a tree and make or buy an ornament with special meaning for them. Then join in an informal decorating party with holiday tunes (kids get to choose some favorites), cocoa and cookies. Set aside an evening to walk or drive around the neighborhood to admire holiday lights and displays. As a fun twist on traditional caroling, grab some kazoos and go humming with the kids and their friends. To capture these great holiday moments, ask each child to take turns as the official family photographer. Borba believes these types of shared experiences help children understand the true meaning of the season and bring back the heartfelt joy it represents. “In the end,” she advises, “remember that the holidays are really meant to be about love, togetherness and wonderful memories.” Barbara Amrhein is a freelance writer and editor for Natural Awakenings.

t’s easy to take breathing for granted. But tune in to your breath—when, say, halfway through a sun salutation or headed for a finish line—and you’ll find that it not only feeds muscles fresh oxygen, but also indicates whether it’s time to increase the intensity of the activity. To get the most out of every breath, follow these exercise tips from acknowledged experts.
Running With closed lips, breathe in sharply and deeply through the nose. Then purse the lips as if trying to blow out a candle and exhale through the mouth. While running, breathe in for one step and out for two. “The rapid inhale and slower exhale in this technique fills lungs from the bottom,” explains Danny Dreyer, author of ChiRunning: A Revolutionary Approach to Effortless, Injury-Free Running. “Breathing exercises help take in more air when inhaling and empty lungs completely when exhaling. Muscles receive more glycogen, which lowers the chances of their cramping up.”
Yoga Use the Hindu breathing method called ujjayi, in which the lungs are fully expanded. First, inhale once with the mouth open, and then exhale the same way, making a “Ha” sound. Then close your mouth and continue making the same sound while inhaling and exhaling through the nose (it will resemble the rushing sound that Darth Vader makes in Star Wars movies). “Your breathing is the barometer of all your poses,” says Elena Brower, founder and co-owner of Virayoga, in www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
New York City. If you’re gasping for air, back out of the pose. “Always give preference to deeper breathing over deeper postures,” advises Brower. This controlled breathing technique is largely responsible for the yoga buzz that helps keep students coming back for more.
Strength Training Exhale through the mouth when lifting weights and inhale through the nose when lowering them. As a rule of thumb, take two seconds to raise weights and three to four seconds to lower them. “Focusing on your breath keeps your brain in the game, so you’re more likely to pay attention to overall form,” says Tom Holland, an exercise physiologist, personal trainer and fitness consultant in Darien, Connecticut.

Ways to Grow, Part Three: Square Foot Gardening by David Y. Goodman, UF/IFAS Marion County Master Gardener
T
his month I’ll wrap up a threepart series on gardening methods that I started in October’s issue. We’ve already taken a look at the Biointensive garden and the Deep Mulch method. Today we’re going to look at what might be the most popular new gardening method in the U.S.: the “Square Foot Garden.”
The Square Foot Garden What happens when an engineer starts gardening? The world’s oldest profession gets a serious makeover! (No, not that profession. Remember the Garden of Eden? Get your mind out of the gutter!) Retired engineerturned-gardener Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening consistently tops the list of best-selling gardening books—and for good reason. Square Foot Gardening promises little or no weeding, consistent results, and lots of organic veggies from a tiny space. It isn’t the easiest or the cheapest garden to set up, and it will drive free-styling gardeners nuts—but once created, it’s prolific. Rachelle Roper, of Marion County’s non-profit “Feed the Need Garden,” uses a variation of this method, which makes sense, considering their mission of feeding the hungry. Square Foot Gardening is low maintenance, easy to teach, and doesn’t rely on local soil conditions.

Though I’m a permacultureminded anarchist at heart, this spring I created a set of square-foot garden beds for my wife Rachel. For years she has watched my seed-slinging and random plantings with bemused interest, but as the cost of food increased, she became personally interested in gardening. However, she
wasn’t a big fan of my unorganized approach. She asked me, “If I wanted a way to garden that was well-organized and easy to maintain, what would you recommend?” The answer was easy. I went online and bought her a copy of the All New Square Foot Gardening book. The book arrived, and it was right up her alley—so a short time later, we built the beds, bought some soil ingredients, and started planting. Ingredients and structure Square Foot Gardening differs
from most other gardening systems in that you do not use your native earth. Instead, you use a perfect mix (Mel’s Mix) of “soil” created from one part compost, one part vermiculite, and one part peat moss. This creates a spongy, airy, rich medium for your plants. It’s also weedfree, unless you start with homemade compost that wasn’t “cooked” enough in a hot compost pile. (And even if you do think the pile got hot enough, watch out—many seeds usually manage to slip through the cracks.) One thing you may have difficulty finding is vermiculite in quantity. Check for big bags from your local feed stores and garden centers; it’s out there, if you search. The classic square-foot bed is a 4-foot by 4-foot square, constructed of anything from lumber to bricks to cinder blocks. Bartholomew also strongly recommends putting a permanent grid over the top, dividing the bed into easily manageable one-foot squares. This is useful for crop rotation, replanting, seeding, and spacing. This grid can be made of stretched string, PVC, 1x2 lumber, or whatever you have lying around. Having a visual delineation of your plants is definitely helpful, but this part of the Square Foot Garden design is often where gardeners diverge from the plans as laid down in Bartholomew’s book. Just remember: getting rid of the grid can lead to getting rid of the perfect soil mix which can then lead to chucking the raised bed concept which is certain to lead to slinging seeds across the yard and screaming “ANARCHY!” at the top of your lungs. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. When you build your square-foot bed, you ideally won’t be in contact with your native soil at all. The book recommends putting a barrier down at the bottom of the newly constructed bed. Weed block and cardboard both

work. Or, you can build the bed on top of concrete, believe it or not. Provided the box is 6” deep and contains “Mel’s Mix,” it will still produce well. This is something to consider if you’re short on yard space and have a sunny slab or driveway handy. Another benefit of this method is that you’ve created a rich weed-free planting medium, meaning you can plant at much denser rates than you would in a traditional garden. The yield is impressive to say the least. As you pull out spent crops, put in a handful of compost in the holes left behind and then plant again. Does it work? Yes. Is it for everyone? Probably not. Some crops don’t like the shallow soil mix, such as grain corn and cassava. However, if you want a solid workhorse garden that doesn’t need a ton of watering and produces salad and veggies year in and year out, this is a great place to start. Just ask Rachel. She pulled some lovely cauliflower, kohlrabi, basil, lettuce and endless beans from her square-foot beds this year, and they keep plugging away for us. E
ach unique human life on this planet is created via an individual’s desires, thoughts, beliefs, felt emotions, and outward actions. Many people, however, consciously or unconsciously ignore their thoughts, beliefs, and felt emotions and go directly to outward actions to obtain whatever it is that they want and desire to have in their life. Everything outside of us (from our physical body— outward) is a physics wave theory reflection of what is going on inside of us in any and every moment of time. If we don’t like a current reflection outside of us (financial, health, relationships, or any situation issue) we have to change what is going on inside of us about the issue (thoughts, beliefs, and felt emotions) first, rather than futilely attempting to outwardly control any issue or person. Outward control of anything does not work long-term, ever; and people really need to get, understand, and resonate with that fact of life. A fact is different from a belief; a fact is true whether you choose to believe it or not—just as the earth is round whether you believe it to be or not. If vibrant health is desired, the focus of the mind has to be on health with the belief that health is possible at every age. And a conundrum presently exists for so many today because they currently choose to think, believe, and feel that sickness and dis-ease is

automatic with chronological maturity—which can happen, but does not happen if it is not focused upon. Disease is not “a given” unless you think, believe, and feel it to be so. Dis-ease
or health both are possibilities of life experience through focused choice— desire, thought, belief, felt emotion and outward action. That mass-consciousness belief that “dis-ease has to happen as people chronologically mature” has singlehandedly created the trillion-dollar nightmare reflecting back to many with regard to the so-called “health care” system in the United States. Further, and what is crucially important to understand clearly, is that the “health care” system is not about health at all.
It is about managing body symptoms (in vain) long-term (outward control) with drugs, surgery, and harmful radiation (poison, cut, and burn). People with money don’t need credit; people with health don’t need health insurance; and unconditional lovers don’t need marriage or a prenup. Please read that sentence again; it is vitally important to consider. Symptoms displayed by human bodies are communicating that the body is not at ease (hence the term disease). It doesn’t matter if the symptom is dandruff, a runny nose, a cough, inflammation (pain, redness, swelling, heat, fever), over- or underweight, heart failure, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, AIDS, cancer, etc. This important message in whatever form it manifests (it is different for each individual) is letting the person know that their desires, thoughts, beliefs, felt emotions and outward actions are not currently in alignment. And all five components have to be in alignment to create (and keep long-term) what is wanted in life. This isn’t negotiable, it is physics wave theory. The good news is that each person only has to be in alignment with self—no one else matters (unless you want to make them matter [don’t ever forget the physics]). Health is not just about the physical body (mental, emotional, spiritual, etc.); health includes finances, relationships, and situations too. Success in life is not just about financial attainment; success includes physical body, relationship, and life situational health as well. There is a big difference between the “appearance of health” and actual health. Some people “look” healthy to a casual observer (even without any makeup) and truly are happy and healthy in all areas of their life—they feel great, take no drugs of any kind, have a few bucks, and routinely experience unconditional loving relationships with others

in life situations. This individual is in complete positive physics alignment. Some people may “look” healthy to a casual observer but in actuality are not—they don’t feel great, they could be experiencing unwanted physical symptoms for which they may or may not be using drugs, surgery, or radiation, they may or may not be experiencing financial health, unconditional loving relationships and/ or situations. This individual is not in complete positive physics alignment. Some people do not “look” healthy at all, which is a clear indication of a physics misalignment. What do you want? Remember the physics. You can have anything and everything that you want in life as long as you believe what you want is possible, because everything from our physical body outward is a physics wave theory reflection of the focus of energy within us by us!
