Gentle Readers, As a follow-up to last month’s PublisherLetter about auto insurance “reform,” the bad news is the bad new Florida law goes into effect January 1, 2013. The good news is we have the chance to vote ‘em out in November 2012 and reverse the legislation. Moving on, I learned a lot while working on this issue. It started out being a “Women’s Health” issue and ended up being largely a “Heart Health” issue for both women AND men. Guess I knew heart disease was the leading killer of men, but didn’t know it was the leading cause of death in women as well. Didn’t know the symptoms felt so different in women, but this issue lays out not only a woman’s heart attack symptoms but even the sensations leading up to an episode weeks or months in advance. Take care of yourselves. Love your hearts, love yourselves. Pay attention to the people, things, circumstances, and activities that bring you joy, and turn away from the rest.

NewsBriefs Reversing Heart Disease With Food “Happy Healthy Heart” Workshop
“L
et food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,” said Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. This is sound health advice, even more today than when it was first uttered twoand-a-half thousand years ago. Remarkably, most diseases are reversible with food—common fruits and vegetables you can find in the produce section at your favorite grocery store, or even better yet, locally and organically grown. However, just eating a healthy diet is not enough. The real secret lies in using specific foods for specific diseases. But how do you know which foods contain the best healing medicine for you? “Happy Healthy Heart,” a workshop on food-based healing, will offer precise food-healing wisdom, presented with a simplicity that everyone can understand. In partnership with Supreme Science Qigong Center, we will offer a live seminar on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Unity of Gainesville Church, from 2pm until 6pm. In this seminar, we will discuss specific protocols, using common foods and herbs, that are scientifically proven to reverse heart disease, unclog arteries, and normalize cholesterol. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs contain phytochemicals that nourish the body’s endocrine and immune systems, but most people don’t get enough of them. Phytochemicals hide in the cellulose fibers of seeds, stems, skins and rinds of the fruits and vegetables we eat. Many people eat the right foods, but throw away the parts with all the medicine! High-powered blending can release the phytochemicals from the fiber, unlocking the healing power of foods into super-nutrient “smoothies.” In addition to drinking smoothies, our
6
meals can be healing as well. Cooking meals with awareness that specific foods reverse specific diseases, we can enjoy delicious food and amazingly good health at the same time. Supreme Science has tested protocols using readily available foods for reversing disease with more than 30,000 people. After 10 years of finetuning, these food-based healing protocols, based on proven naturopathic medicine principles, have been published into a hardcover textbook, Conquering Any Disease, by Jeff Primack. The heart of our program, this 175-page manual lays out everything necessary for food-healing success. There is also a Smoothie Formulas book, with recipes for making great-tasting smoothies. Nutritional experts all over the world are saying they’ve never seen a book that is so easy to read or a program so easy to stick with. Finally, healing recipes are presented in the soon-to-be released Cooking With Qi, the ultimate highphytochemical cookbook. The textbook and recipe books will be available at the seminar. Additionally, the presenters will demonstrate the preparation of healing smoothies and heart-healthy recipes, with free, delicious samples of the tastiest, easiest medicine you’ve ever taken. The workshop will take place at the Unity Church of Gainesville, 8801 NW 39th Avenue, on Saturday, June 2. The seminar will begin at 2pm. Tickets are discounted for Natural Awakenings readers and are available at www. showclix.com/event/foodhealing. For more information, contact Jennifer Downey at 352-745-2977.

Yoga Teacher Training
M
any people believe that the purpose of yoga practice and yoga teacher training is to become flexible. Not true. The ultimate intention of authentic yoga is the integration of all internal conflicts that create havoc with our health, personal and professional lives. Yogi Amrit Desai notes, “I
know many people who are flexible, yet miserable.” Living in the present moment means letting go of that which is either dead or unborn and accepting what exists. It is acceptance of ourselves for who we are and where we are. We let go of self-rejection. Being present with what is allows us to see exactly what is going on around us. Then we are in tune with natural laws, the flux of constant change. The Amrit® Method combines a foundation of asana with inward focus and meditative awareness. The alternating impact of deliberate, dynamic postures and deeply absorbing silence and relaxation allow practitioners to enter the deepest levels of relaxation, tranquility and stillness. Part I of Amrit Method Yoga Teacher Training is June 8-17, 2012 at the Amrit Yoga Institute, Salt Springs. HealthBriefs Sour News About Sweet Drinks
Eating Greens Can Change Genes!
A
n international team of scientists led by researchers at McMaster and McGill universities, in Canada, were surprised to find that consuming generous amounts of fruit and raw vegetables modified a gene designated 9p21, the strongest marker for heart disease. In one of the largest genediet interaction studies ever conducted related to cardiovascular disease, the researchers analyzed more than 27,000 individuals from five ethnicities—Latin American, European, Chinese, South Asian and Arab—and the effect their diets had on the target gene. They discovered that men and women with the high-risk genotype who consumed a healthy diet with plenty of raw vegetables and fruits had a risk of heart attack similar to individuals carrying the low-risk genotype. “We know that 9p21 genetic variants increase the risk of heart disease for those who carry it,” says Genetic Epidemiologist Jamie Engert, joint principal investigator of the study, “but it was a surprise to find that a healthy diet could significantly weaken its effect.”
D
rinking sodas and other sugarsweetened beverages may increase a woman’s risk of heart disease and diabetes, according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2011. Middle-aged and older women who drank two or more such drinks per day were nearly four times as likely to develop high triglycerides and significantly more likely to develop impaired fasting glucose levels, plus increase their waist size. The study also noted that risk factors for heart disease and stroke developed even when the women didn’t gain weight.

Acupuncture Cools Hot Flashes
A
small yet intriguing study published in Acupuncture in Medicine found that traditional Chinese acupuncture curbed the severity of hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Fifty-three middle-aged, postmenopausal women were divided into two groups; one received such treatments twice weekly for 10 weeks, while the other experienced “sham” acupuncture with blunt needles that did not penetrate the skin. In both groups, levels of estrogen and other hormones were measured before the study began and before and after the last session. Menopausal symptoms—hot flashes, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections, and mood swings—were also measured before and after the treatments, using a five-point menopause rating scale (MRS) in order to assess their severity. At the end of the study, the women receiving Chinese acupuncture scored significantly lower on the MRS scale, with hot flashes seeing the sharpest decrease. The researchers explain that acupuncture boosts production of endorphins, which may stabilize the temperature control system of the body. They say that more investigation is needed because the study was small, but note that its results seem promising, suggesting that traditional Chinese acupuncture could be an alternative for women unable or unwilling to use hormone replacement therapy to relieve menopausal symptoms.

Memory & the Pill
R
esearchers from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) report that while birth control pills don’t damage memory, they can alter it. Women who were not taking birth control pills were better at remembering details than their peers on the pill. Contraceptives suppress sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone to prevent pregnancy. These hormones were previously linked to women’s strong left-brain memory by a UCI research group led by Ph.D. Neurobiologist Larry Cahill.

HealthBriefs Calcium Supplements Increase Heart Risk
C
alcium supplements, usually taken to improve bone health, may increase the risk of heart attack by as much as 30 percent, according to the findings of the Women’s Health Initiative, a 15-year research project established by the National Institutes of Health to address cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis. “If you take calcium supplements, you’ll build up excess calcium in your system that, coupled with mineral deficiencies and imbalances, can cause plaque in arteries, kidney stones, gallstones and more,” says Dr. Robert Thompson, co-author with Kathleen Barnes of The Calcium Lie: What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know Could Kill You. Instead, he recommends taking a trace mineral supplement, preferably in ionic form, whose electrical charge helps bond minerals with water, making the nutrients more easily absorbed. Such a supplement provides all needed minerals, including calcium, in the correct balance.
Potassium Protects the Heart
A
ccording to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death and a major contributor to disability in this country. A recent study sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that in addition to cutting dietary sodium to improve heart health, Americans should increase consumption of a key mineral found in many fruits and vegetables: potassium. The study of more than 12,000 adults reported that people eating a diet high in sodium and low in potassium have a 50 percent increased risk of death from any disease than average and about twice the risk of death from heart attacks. Sodium, a key component of salt, raises blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease. Potassium has been found to offset sodium’s impact on blood pressure. Current U.S. dietary guidelines recommend an adult daily potassium intake of 4,700 milligrams and a maximum sodium intake of 2,300 milligrams (about a teaspoon of salt); or less than 1,500 milligrams for people age 51 and older, African-Americans or those that suffer from hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. The CDC reveals that the average American adult consumes 3,400 milligrams of sodium a day, about 80 percent from processed or restaurant foods. To achieve a healthier sodium-potassium ratio, the CDC recommends a diet that emphasizes fresh, unprocessed foods and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Foods high in potassium include sweet and white potatoes, spinach, tomatoes and bananas, as well as orange and prune juice, dates, plain yogurt and fish.

Flexible Workplaces Boost Well-Being
B
etter sleep and feelings of health are among the benefits of a flexible workplace, according to a new study by University of Minnesota sociology professors that followed 608 office employees in a collaborating company. The initiation of a performance-focused work environment that redirected the focus of employees and managers towards measurable results, and away from when and where work was completed, yielded positive markers. Employees who were allowed to routinely change when and where they worked, based upon their individual needs and job responsibilities, experienced improved sleep quality, higher energy levels, better self-reported health and a sense of personal mastery. Source: Journal of Health and Social Behavior
Vitamin “See”
S
cientists at Oregon Health & Science University recently identified yet another benefit provided by vitamin C. In a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, co-author and senior scientist Henrique von Gersdorff, Ph.D., says nerve cells in the eye require C to stay healthy—the vitamin bathes the cells of the retina and contributes to their proper function.

Quite a Year For Magnolias
T
he magnolias are in bloom, and this makes me happier than I can express. You may not derive as much joy from the sight of a blooming magnolia as I do, but I entreat you to try. A magnolia is not only beautiful, but also has a softly lemony fragrance, fresh and faintly sweet, wholesome and old-fashioned, like lemon shortbread baked in a sparkling-clean kitchen with open windows and warm breezes wafting through sheer white curtains. Scents create pictures in my mind. It’s unusual, but it certainly entertains me. I’m not the only one who thinks in pictures. A friend once said to me, “Whenever I talk to you, I feel like I’m sitting under a magnolia tree having a mint julep.” It remains one of my favorite compliments ever. The magnolias bloomed early this spring, like everything else. For me, they bloomed especially early—this past autumn. This spring, whenever I see one, I think of my Magnolias—my five friends and fellow cast members from our Ocala Civic Theatre stage production of Steel Magnolias last fall. I’ve loved Steel Magnolias since the movie came out when I was 13, and have always wanted to be in the stage play. Last fall, I got my wish. Going into rehearsals, I was trepidatious. The odds of finding six women who get along beautifully are slim. Those odds decrease when you throw
12
in a 30-year age span and spending 200+ hours together during two months. The odds of a fully harmonious experience were not in our favor. And yet. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it in print: It was marvelous. We all got along like peaches and cream, like blush complements bashful. There was not one cross word, snarky comment, flare of temper, or ego; no tension, hostility, or hurt feelings. There was no drama, except on the stage. We laughed, we cried, we shared, we bonded. We had the time of our lives. You don’t have to be a theatre person to know this was nothing short of a miracle. It was as perfect and extraordinary a gift as a magnolia blooming in autumn. In fact, the six of us enjoyed each other so much that we continue to get together once a month for “Magnolia Club” meetings and outings. I had a Magnolia outing of my own recently when I went on a little road trip with my mother and grandmother to Lakeland, where I was born and where much of my family is from. One destination was my grandmother’s beauty salon, so she could get her hair done by the one person she will allow to touch her hair. Dear Readers, I tell you: I was in the real-life manifestation of Truvy’s salon. I had been there before, but not since I’d done the show—and it was eerie. I felt like I was back on our set. I’d never realized how very Truvyish my grandmother’s beautician is, how like Truvy’s shop this salon is. It’s even a home salon in an enclosed carport, dating to 1975 and complete with the original, fabulously retro décor. There was a Miss Clairee, holding court and telling colorful tales about generations of women who fit right into the M’Lynn, Shelby, and Annelle roles. (And if you think I didn’t whip out my
pen and notebook and start taking notes right then, you are mistaken.) One of my aunts also goes to “Truvy’s,” and if she isn’t Ouiser, I don’t know who is. The house is out in the country. There are rocking chairs on the front porch, day lilies all around, and the air smells like jasmine. If you look across the road, you see an old white Cracker farmhouse, some Queen Anne’s lace, a cornfield, an orange grove … and a big old magnolia tree right there on the corner, marking the spot where you turn to go to “Truvy’s.” Besides the magnolia on the corner, the best symbol for “Truvy’s” shop is the bright blue frosted-glass candy dish on the counter, full of cash, with a sign that says, “Love Gift For Betty.” I don’t know who Betty is or what her troubles are, but I do know that this small, rural clientele of old-school Southern women is helping her out as best they can. And that’s what a magnolia is, whether you’re talking about the floral or the female variety. It’s a love gift, and a generous one. Whether it’s blooming on a branch or telling stories on your porch or teasing your hair to high heaven, a magnolia is timeless, beautiful, and never out of season. And I’m so thankful that in my world, Magnolias bloom all year ‘round, bringing beauty and joy to my life. M’Lynn: “You all don’t know how wonderful you are.” Truvy: “Of course we do.” I hope you do. Melody and her fellow Magnolias— Gina, Laurie, Celia, Carrie, and Joan— planted a magnolia tree in their director’s yard the night before the show closed. They can only hope the tree shares the show’s motto, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”

Maybe you work at a call center, a security company, the front desk of a residential living facility, or work as an accountant, computer programmer, or something else that involves long periods of sitting down. New research suggests that a woman’s level of physical activity is a better sign than body weight of existing coronary artery disease and future heart problems. The study, which appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (9/8/2004; 292 [10], 1179–87), examined 906 women who had chest pain, suspected narrowing of the coronary arteries, or both. Researchers calculated each woman’s body mass index (BMI), and patients were categorized as normal weight, overweight, or obese. In addition, the women answered a questionnaire that assessed their physical activity levels and abilities. In all, 76% of the participants were classified as overweight and 41% of those as obese. Low physical activity levels were reported by 70% of the women. The researchers detected no difference in the presence or severity of disease for women in different weight categories. However, a significant association emerged between low physical activity level and the existence of obstructive coronary artery disease. Researchers concluded that low physical activity was a leading indicator of future heart problems. Women who were at least moderately active had a lower risk of adverse cardiovascular events than women with a low physical activity level, regardless of their weight category.

Although many women worry about their risk of getting breast cancer, heart disease is actually the leading killer of women in America. Not only does heart disease kill more women than men each year (Thom et al. 2006), but females who survive a cardiac event fare much worse than their male counterparts (Blomkalns et al. 2005). Yet many women and their physicians fail to recognize the toll that cardiovascular disease (CVD) can take on the female body, and thus fail
Heart disease is the leading killer of women in America. And, heart disease kills more women than men each year. to do what is necessary to reduce the risk of getting this largely preventable disease (Mosca et al. 2005). Now the latest research and recommendations are in. Lifestyle modification is crucial—in fact, it trumps medical intervention when it comes to preventing CVD in women. “Heart disease should top the list of women’s health concerns; unfortunately, it doesn’t even come close,” according to Sharonne Hayes, MD, director of the Mayo Clinic Women’s Heart Clinic at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. “Many women have a disproportionate fear of breast cancer and dutifully present for annual mammography while remaining oblivious to their risk of cardiovascular
disease” (Hayes 2006). Unlike men, women often don’t experience the “typical” signs of heart disease, such as chest pain. When women patients do complain of chest discomfort, they often fail to describe it as pain in the chest, instead reporting an aching, tightness, or pressure in the area. More often, women experience different symptoms than men— sometimes 4-6 months or more—before an actual heart attack or other cardiovascular event. These symptoms could include severe fatigue, sleep disturbances, shortness of breath, indigestion, and anxiety (McSweeney et al. 2003). This disparity in signs, symptoms, and terminology is important because physicians and emergency room personnel often assess primarily for chest pain when trying to rule out or rule in a heart attack. At Lemire Clinic we now have a test which can predict years before, a person’s probabilities for developing coronary artery disease. We also have another that can determine the levels of risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes two, five, or even 10 years down the line. This gives people the opportunity to make the necessary lifestyle changes. Depending on your insurance, it’s possible that these tests can be done at no cost to you. Women’s Heart Attacks:
The Symptoms Are Different and Often Go Undetected by Sue Morris
W
omen experience many things differently from men: most women menstruate, some women bear children, and women are more likely to have heart attacks that go undetected. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that “fewer than 30% of women reported having chest pain or discomfort prior to their heart attacks, and 43% reported have no chest pain during any phase of the attack.” This NIH study, released in 2003, is among the first to analyze the difference between women’s and men’s heart attack symptoms and pain during heart attack. 515 women were studied, and a whopping 95% said they knew they felt something new or different going on with their health about a month before experiencing their heart attacks. So, what did they feel was different in the month before the heart attack? According to the study, the women’s major symptoms prior to their heart attack included unusual fatigue (70%), sleep disturbance (48%), shortness of breath (42%), indigestion (39%), and anxiety (35%). Now, here’s the kicker: women have different sensations from men while experiencing the actual heart attack! The women in the study said they felt shortness of breath (58%), weakness (55%), unusual fatigue (43%), cold sweat (39%), and dizziness (39%). Men experience chest pain, but what about women? Yes, there is pain, but it is different. The Department of Health and Human Services and its Office on Women’s Health, began a campaign more than a year ago for women to learn to recognize signs www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
of a heart attack, especially the signs they’re likely to dismiss. What some women feel is sharp pain in the upper body, including the neck, back and jaw. This is a significant symptom, particularly when this is the first time a woman has felt pain in those places, according to Dr. Roquelle E. Wyche, a cardiologist at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. and a member of the Association of Black Cardiologists, a group that supports the campaign. The “Make the Call, Don’t Miss a Beat” campaign, unveiled in February, 2011 by the Department of Health, urges women to call 9-1-1 and get appropriate medical attention within an hour of a heart attack. That crucial hour cuts the risk of death in half. You might think it’s common sense to call 9-1-1 when experiencing heart
attack symptoms. A 2006 study by The American Heart Association indicated that 79% of women they interviewed said the first thing they would do was call 9-1-1 if they felt a heart attack coming. But, in a 2009 study, The American Heart Association found that only 53% of women having heart attack symptoms actually called 9-1-1. Heart disease is the Number One killer of American women; an American woman suffers a heart attack every minute. With symptoms manifesting up to a month before the actual heart attack, it’s still difficult for doctors to recognize the signs of imminent heart attack in women. A recent study by New York University finds angiograms, one of the most common tests for heart disease, sometimes don’t detect plaque that’s blocking arteries in women’s hearts. According to a story on ABC News, new research from the New York University Langone Medical Center showed 38% of women who had a rupture or ulcer in the plaque of their coronary arteries did not have it show up in standard angiogram! The study indicates that an intravascular ultrasound procedure should be done instead to diagnose plaque disruption. And, now, for another common cause of heart attacks going undiagnosed in women: age. It was addressed at the American Heart Association’s

conference on “Quality of Care and Outcomes Research in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke” in 2008. 30 women aged 55 and younger (with an average age of 48) who’d had heart attacks were interviewed within a week of leaving the hospital. The women said there were several obstacles in realizing they were having heart attacks: they thought they were too young to be having a heart attack, atypical symptoms that lasted more than a day, and they thought their symptoms were from other conditions. The study also noted that health care workers didn’t always know that these women were having heart attacks. Women who delay seeking medical treatment for lingering symptoms will often self-medicate to feel better, chalk up fatigue and dizziness to overwork, and are in denial about the severity of their symptoms because they think they are too young for a heart attack, and they put themselves at risk. Love Your Heart Natural Ways to Help Prevent or Help Reverse Heart Disease by Carolyn Blakeslee

e all know what to do. Stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol and coffee, stop eating packaged foods, start eating organic foods (raw at least 50% of the time), if you want to eat meat then eat locally grown grass-fed beef and free-range chicken, exercise, and get rid of stress. Simple, right? Heck, no. Give yourself a break. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, especially if you’re stressed or not feeling well. If you are experiencing symptoms, go have an evaluation and make the following changes one at a time. Set a goal each month, write it into your calendar, and keep your commitment to yourself and your loved ones. Your life might depend on it. You don’t need to live (and die) with a “broken heart.” Please keep in mind, this article is not meant to substitute for medical advice. If you are taking medications, do not stop taking them. As you make changes in your life, work with your doctor to adjust your treatment appropriately. n Exercise every day. If you can’t or won’t fit in 30-60 minutes of intentional exercise, a little something is better than nothing. Walk for a few minutes, do yoga stretches for a few minutes. Take the steps. Park farther away from the grocery store and walk. Plant and maintain a garden of fresh herbs, foods, and flowers. Housework counts; so does walking the dog. Forgive yourself for not being on a perfect workout routine— pat yourself on the back for each baby step you take. n Stop being mean to yourself. How would you feel if you saw someone on the street treating a stranger as
Women are under tremendous stress today. Many women are single parents, and today more than half of births to American women younger than 30 occur outside marriage. At the same time, these moms are holding down full-time jobs, and according to the U.S. Census Bureau 41% of single moms are living at or below the poverty line. Nonetheless, our children are among the reasons to take care of ourselves and nurture our hearts.
badly as you treat yourself? Start turning it around. Whenever you catch yourself beating yourself up, simply stop. As Wayne Dyer said during a recent interview, “Every time I say ‘I am [fill in the blank]’ I am using the name of God. (‘I am that I am.’) So you’d better be careful about desecrating the name of God! Don’t say ‘I am a loser [or whatever]’ and God certainly didn’t say ‘I hope’ or ‘I will be,’ He said ‘I am.’ God is the great ‘I Am’ and we were created in His image, so you’d better be careful about your ‘I Am’ statements!” n Besides paying attention to your self-talk, pay attention to your attitude ... ... Continued from Page 16 about circumstances and other people. If you find yourself thinking a negative thought, simply stop it and change it to something positive. Don’t gossip or say bad things about other people. Don’t beat yourself up, just start over. n Stop watching/reading the news. It’s all biased. If you study “conspiracy theory” stuff or “the other party is bad” stuff, it will really get to you. The only thing you can do about it is vote, volunteer, give, run for office, or move. Stop paying attention to it. Pay attention to yourself. Read and pay attention to what brings you joy. Have friends. n Never be afraid to ask for help, whether it’s help cleaning your house, help sorting out your finances, help reprogramming your mind, help with your children, help figuring something out, or whatever. Usually, our lives are made richer by helping other people and by asking for and accepting help from others. I say “usually” because sometimes people are ungrateful and cruel—in that case, every time you have a negative thought about that person, capture it and forgive them. It isn’t unusual to have the hurt thoughts pop up again and again; even the Bible says to forgive someone “seventy times seven” times. It’s a lot better for you to feel love than hatred. Love everything and everyone as best you can. n Start a Gratitude Journal. At the end of each day, write down each and every thing for which you’re grateful. n Eat real food. Margarine, canola oil, are you kidding?? Butter is The Bomb, in moderation, anyway. Julia Child knew it and she lived to 91. Contrary to the corn-oil industry’s propaganda, virgin organic coconut oil is indeed good for you; olive oil, too. Anyhow, flour, bleached salt, refined sugar, packaged foods—just eliminate them! Buy local, fresh, organic food. “More expensive” you say? Pick up some organic produce and “weigh” it next to a similar quantity of grocery-store produce. You’ll swear the organic produce is heavier and

more dense—and it is. You won’t need to eat as much of it to feel full, either. n Don’t worry about losing weight. (Yes, you read that right.) It’s better if you do, but read Nuris’s article for more information on this. Just become more active, that’s all it takes. Don’t judge yourself for being larger than you want to be—just start loving yourself for the changes you are making. Become smaller when you’re ready to. As you make these changes, you’re likely to start getting smaller effortlessly. n Do not stop snacking. (Yes, you read that right, too.) Simply switch to delicious natural snacks. Go to Amazon. com and buy a $35 food dehydrator. You can make your own delicious blueberry “raisins,” banana chips, kale chips, and much more. You’ll never buy expensive packaged snacks again, and just watch your energy and health start to build up! n Learn about raw smoothies. They look awful at first but taste great. An awesomely simple starter recipe is organic baby spinach with bananas. Blend it thoroughly or better yet invest in a Vitamax, either online, at a local raw smoothie meeting, or at the local restaurant supply store. Anyhow, raw smoothies make great breakfasts and snacks. n Drink lots of water. According to cardiologist Kenneth R. Kensey (The Blood Thinner Cure), water is the ultimate blood thinner. His theory: thickened blood clogs and damages the heart and blood vessels.
LDL. LDL is the ”bad” cholestrerol, HDL is the “good.” You can remember it this way: “L” as in “Look out,” “H” as in “heavenly.” Your total number matters, but the ratio of LDL to HDL is important too. As a rule of thumb, LDL:HDL should be about 3:1. n Laugh. As often as you can. Visit YouTube, Facebook, whatever it takes. Click on stupid video clips to your heart’s content—treat yourself to the luxury of watching them (it is NOT wasting time), and just enjoy. n If you are a smoker, stop smoking. Just cut it out. You can eliminate one cigarette a day until you’re down to one an hour, then finally one a day, then …. Anyhow, according to the Mayo Clinic, “when you quit smoking, your risk of heart disease drops dramatically within just one year. And no matter how long or how much you smoked, you’ll start reaping rewards as soon as you quit.” n On an empty stomach (between meals), take systemic enzymes. According to Dr. Mercola, these “inhibit platelet aggregation, help your immune system combat pathogens, and break down fibrin (which makes up clots).” For a good introduction to enzymes (both digestive and systemic/metabolic), visit http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/ archive/2011/08/21/enzymes-special-report.aspx and www.positivehealth.com/ article/nutrition/therapeutic-propertiesof-systemic-oral-enzymes
n Take a good multiple vitamin-andmineral supplement every day. Be sure there’s a little bit of iodine in it now that you’ve quit buying bleached/iodized salt. Read the ingredients and try to find one without chemical additives such as magnesium stearate.
n Besides all of the above suggestions, all kinds of natural treatments are available to you including acupuncture (improves the flow of everything in your body including blood and energy), EFT (an easy self-administered acupressure method), energy medicine/ energy psychology, herbs, homeopathy, and much more. We have plenty of ads in this magazine from caring, gifted people who are prepared and trained to help you heal. Support them—they will support you. I promise.
n Monitor cholesterol but be sure the number is broken down into HDL vs.

Intimate Relationships and the Spiritual Path by Marianne Williamson
T
he “common wisdom” goes like this: that the myth of “some enchanted evening,” when all is awash with the thrill of connection and the aliveness of new romance, is actually a delusion, a hormonally manufactured lie. That soon enough, reality will set in and lovers will awaken from their mutual projections, discover the psychological work involved in two people trying to reach across the chasm of real-life separateness, and come to terms at last with the mundane sorrows of human existence and intimate love. In this case, the common wisdom is a lie. From a spiritual perspective, the scenario above is upside down. From a spiritual perspective, the original high of a romantic connection is thrilling because it is true. It is in fact the opposite of delusion. For in a quick moment, a gift from the gods, we are likely to suspend our judgment of the other, not because we are temporarily insane, but because we are temporarily sane. We are having what you might call a mini-enlightenment experience. Enlightenment is not unreal; enlightenment—or pure love—is all that is real. Enlightenment is when we see not as through a glass darkly, but truly faceto-face. What is unreal is what comes after the initial high, when the personality self reasserts itself and the wounds and triggers of our human ego form a veil across the face of love. The initial romantic high is not something www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
to outgrow, so much as something to earn admittance back into—this time not as an unearned gift of Cupid’s arrows, but as a consequence of the real work of the psychological and spiritual journey. The romantic relationship is a spiritual assignment, presenting an opportunity for lovers and would-be lovers to burn through our own issues and forgive the other theirs, so together we can gain re-entrance to the joyful realms of our initial contact that turn out to have been real love after all. Our problem is that most of us rarely have a psychic container strong enough to stand the amount of light that pours into us when we have truly seen, if even for a moment, the deep beauty of another. The problem we have is not that in our romantic fervor we fall into a delusion of oneness; the problem is that we then fall into the delusion of separateness. And those are the romantic mysteries: the almost blinding light when we truly see each other, the desperate darkness of the ego’s blindness, and the sacred work of choosing the light of mutual innocence when the darkness of anger and guilt descend. Marianne Williamson is an internationally noted speaker, author of 10 books, Unity Church minister and a teacher and student of A Course in Miracles. Her most recent workshops focus on the topic of Enchanted Love: Building the Inner Temple of the Sacred and the Romantic.

The Hormone Balancing Act Natural Strategies for Feeling Better by Kathleen Barnes
H
ormones rule our lives; it’s a simple fact of biochemistry. In their role as the body’s chemical messengers, hormones affect every human biological system. Without them, nothing works correctly. Women’s hormonal systems are as complex as men’s, although vastly different. They govern reproduction, plus every aspect of health—including metabolizing food, proper immune function, physical and emotional responses to stress, and the aging of cells.
Teens and Early 20s
Puberty and the early reproductive years should be the physical peak of a young woman’s life, when she is physically active and full of energy and
youthful health. It’s also the time when breasts develop, hips widen, pubic hair appears, menstruation begins, and she becomes capable of pregnancy. The good news is that several studies by the National Cancer Institute and the University of California, Los Angeles, have shown that regular exercise undertaken at this age results in lower estrogen levels throughout a woman’s life, greatly reducing her risk of breast cancer and other hormonal cancers. Yet, C.W. Randolph, Jr., a leading bioidentical hormone physician and co-author of From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well, reports that the ideal hormonal balance is routinely upset today. Culprits are obesity among young American women and
Major Female Hormones n Estrogen is produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands and in several other parts of the female body. It is responsible for physical maturation, including development of breasts, regulation of the menstrual cycle and preparing the uterus to receive a fertilized embryo. n Progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy, maintains pregnancy and balances estrogen during cyclical fluctuations.
20
n Luteinizing hormone governs the ovaries’ production of estrogen and progesterone. n Follicle-stimulating hormone works in synergy with the luteinizing hormone to control the menstrual cycle and ovarian egg production. n Testosterone is present in women, although in far lower levels than in men. It serves as a component of healthy sexual desire and in maintenance of healthy bones and muscles.
the everyday presence of toxic estrogenic chemicals in today’s dairy products and meat, personal care products, plastics, food containers, pesticides and herbicides, as well as car exhaust. “These compounds often have chemical structure similar to estrogen and can act like estrogen when introduced into the body,” Randolph explains. “Over time, these substances can increase estrogen in the body, potentially causing problems.” Categorized as xenoestrogens, these hormone disruptors can cause rapid growth in breast tissue and have been blamed for the appearance of breast tissue and even milk production in girls as young as 18 months and the early onset of puberty, particularly among African-American girls. They are also suspected in the rising incidence of breast cancer in younger women today.
Reproductive Years
Women in their reproductive years often experience extreme stress in struggling to balance family, work, relationships and a need for personal growth, along with economic challenges. Women’s health expert Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of The Wisdom of Menopause, blames the stress of modern lifestyles for hormone disruptions in women in their

Concurrently, many women sacrifice self-nurturance in order to nurture others. The first result is often premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which Northrup calls a “lifestyle disease.” “We know that this problem seems to worsen with each subsequent child. With growing families and responsibilities, women no longer take care of themselves as well; no longer get the amount of exercise they once did. The body is quite forgiving in their 20s, much less so in their 30s.” Part of the result is the attempt to reduce stress levels by eating high-fat and high-sugar comfort foods. Weight gain, blood sugar imbalances and sex hormone imbalances follow. “Excess blood sugar changes the way estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are metabolized,” Northrup explains. “PMS and other problems of the reproductive years often go away when you get your blood sugar balanced, but—here’s the rub—you won’t get it rebalanced unwww.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
less you are addressing the stressors in your life.” Due to the presence of xenoestrogens and Americans’ general fondness for processed comfort foods, women in their childbearing years are also increasingly afflicted by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition characterized by overproduction of testosterone and other male hormones. Insulite Laboratories, in Louisville, Colorado, reports that infertility and early onset Type 2 diabetes, another hormonal imbalance problem, are closely connected to PCOS. The first priority for every woman at any age, counsels Northrup, is to get blood sugar (glucose) under control. “Get a glucometer. You don’t need a prescription. If your blood sugar level isn’t between 80 and 90 in the morning, you need to look at your diet and lifestyle. Getting this under control will create hormonal balance in the vast majority of women. It’s so simple.”
Perimenopause
The next hormonal shift overlaps with a woman’s reproductive years. Symptoms of perimenopause, or the start of menopause and the end of childbearing years, typically show up between the early and late 30s. These range from hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia to weight gain, fuzzy thinking, and redistribution of hair on the body. Again, the presence of xenoestrogens and stress contribute. Women of other cultures rarely experience the intensity of perimenopausal symptoms that Western women report. So does that make perimenopause a lifestyle disease, as well? Emphatically yes, says Holly Lucille, a doctor of naturopathy, registered nurse and past president of the California Naturopathic Doctors Association. “Diet and lifestyle are absolutely essential to a healthy hormonal system,” which she explains in her book, Creating and Maintaining Balance: A Woman’s Guide to Safe, Natural, Hormone Health. “The biochemistry of the body is based on vitamins and minerals. If we compromise food and lifestyle choices, we
are not getting the nutrients necessary to have a healthy endocrine system.” Weight gain is a particular concern during perimenopause. In their book, From Belly Fat to Belly Flat, Dr. Randolph and Genie James, cofounders of the Natural Hormone Institute, advocate a specific eating plan to override belly fat and related accumulating effects of excess estrogen. “In perimenopause, progesterone production usually declines rapidly, more than 120 times faster than estrogen or testosterone production. That’s what aggravates the symptoms,” Randolph notes. “Because women in perimenopause are usually still menstruating, they think their hormones are okay.” “The more body fat you have, the more estrogen tips the hormonal imbalance,” says Lucille. “Those fat cells hold on to toxins and place more burden on the liver, making it unable to effectively metabolize those extra estrogens,” which are stored in body fat and brought into the body as xenoestrogens. “At the end of the day, estrogen is a messenger, and its message is to tell cells to grow and proliferate. That’s what we don’t want.” When estrogen becomes domi-

It’s a vicious cycle.” Lucille considers perimenopause the opposite of puberty and counsels, “While we are dealing with these changes, bringing some hormones on board for a short time can be a valuable tool.” However, she cautions, replacing anything isn’t the issue. “You have to look at the big picture,” she avers. “Putting hormones into a toxic body is like putting gas into a dirty gas tank. We have to restore function first.” Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) has been a boon for millions. Results of the Women’s Health Initiative, a national study of women’s health between 1991 and 2002, involving more than 160,000 postmenopausal women ages 50 to 79, sparked more widespread use early in the 21st century, when research began to show the dire consequences of synthetic hormone replacement. The Million Woman Study of British women also found that taking synthetic hormones at menopause doubled the risk of breast cancer. Northrup calls bioidenticals “nature’s ideal design,” due to the prescription of individually tailored doses, custom-made by compounding pharmacies. Although these are rarely covered by insurance, estradiol-only patches may be; however, additional

progesterone and testosterone may still be necessary, depending on test results, according to Northrup.
Menopause
If a woman has had no menstrual periods for 12 months, she is considered to be in menopause. However, Lucille asserts, “Menopause is not a disease.” Northrup touts menopause as the most creative and precious time of a woman’s life; it is often a time of spiritual awakening and self-fulfillment. “When the female brain passes menopause, the brain changes,” advises Northrup. “In a sense, we move from alternating current to direct current; I believe that this is the way the brain encodes wisdom. “Yet there are women in their 60s who are still having hot flashes. What should they do?” queries Northrup.
Natural alternatives exist that are safe and effective. “Many herbs have been used for millennia that have estrogen-like properties, but do not have estrogen’s side effects,” Northrup says. “There is huge confusion about this: Plant hormones have different structures than mammalian hormones and cannot act as growth hormones. If you have too much estrogen, these plant hormones can actually protect against excess stimulation.” Her favorite is pueraria mirifica, which has helped relieve perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms in 80 percent of her patients within days. (Because the method of harvesting and processing supports effectiveness, Northrup likes Solgar brand PhytoGen.) She also uses maca, from Peru, for its phytoestrogens, vitex, black cohosh and omega-3 fatty acids such as those found in salmon for ongoing hot flashes. “Some women go through these years and truly take their place as women of wisdom and power. They don’t need any additional hormone support; they have enough life energy coming,” comments Northrup. “Others may need to take some kind of hormone support their entire lives. Either way, no one should suffer.” Kathleen Barnes is a natural health advocate, author and publisher. User’s Guide to Natural Hormone Replacement is among her many books. Visit KathleenBarnes.com.

ioidentical hormone replacement requires a prescription hormone blend prepared specifically for each individual by a compounding pharmacy. It may include the three primary aspects of natural estrogen: estradiol, estrone and estriol, and will usually include progesterone and testosterone, if needed. “An almost limitless flexibility of doses is available in capsule or cream form,” says Steve Metcalf, a registered pharmacist and owner of Metcalf Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy
in Brevard, North Carolina. “Unlike conventional hormone replacement therapy, where the mentality of the pharmaceutical companies is ‘one size fits all,’ we can make the specific strength you need.” Franck’s Pharmacy in Ocala is our local compounding pharmacy (call 352-622-1814). The Breath of Life by Dr. Paula Koger, RN, MA, DOM
S
ome of the things we neglect most in our culture are the things that are free. We value things by their price tag. Healing yourself by being present to the self inside the body, by breathing all the way into every cell, is one of our most valuable tools. Attending to ourselves by breathing into ourselves and sending positive energy and oxygen is an essential life-supportive measure. I was an OB nurse for a year in my former career as an RN, and I observed the dramatic impact effective oxygenation of the infant had on his health and activity level. I saw that infants delivered naturally without intense sedation of the mother had almost immediate pink color come into their body. Others whose mothers where heavily sedated remained blue longer and sometimes required oxygen to restore their vitality. In his book What Does Oxygen “Do?” Dr. Michael Sebastian M.D. states, “In a nutshell, oxygen enables the cells of the body to release the energy stored as high-energy chemical bonds in our food, and enables them to use that energy to do what cells do: namely, to keep us alive, heart beating, brain thinking, and kidneys flushing.“ We have access to life support all the time. Life is as close as our nostrils and requires only the effort of allowing in this most life-sustaining element on the planet. Sensing it, feeling it, and allowing the breath to go all the way into every cell in the body oxygenates the cells. Oxygen is the life-carrying
24
element. Breathing intentionally is the ultimate detoxifying antioxidant flush. In the presence of oxygen, free radicals are reduced. That is why hyperbaric oxygen is so useful in diseases such as neuropathy where toxins are stored in the body’s extremities. As we force oxygen in under pressure, it improves the body’s elimination of the toxins that have caused the flow of blood to be diminished and caused the neuropathy. Combined with other in-
terventions to detoxify, it is useful even in severe cases. Much of our lifestyle has been caught up with rushing around doing things. We spend a great deal of our time tuned into what is “out there” rather than what is in us. When we tune into ourselves, life force increases and destructive elements are neutralized. Life force or consciousness grows. When we are breathing deeply, we are less able to think our toxic thoughts. Breathing deeply is nature’s tranquilizer. Beyond thinking is knowledge of our universal source that heals as it enters through the quieted mind.
So breathe deeply. You don’t have to go any place to get this “medicine,” and it is free. It has no side effects. It is habit forming—and with a habit like this, you will live a long, happy, healthy life, especially when you use the other natural medicines God has provided so generously. As you breathe deeply—all the way down to the deepest place in your abdomen—you might sense there is tightness, a constriction, a denseness, or a darkness that you encounter. If so, this is what you have to let go of. This is the stuff you have stored either consciously or unconsciously. Most likely it is unconscious, as is 95% of what we store. Because this 95% in the subconscious is the controlling driver for most of our physiological, emotional, and spiritual activities, we want these to be released and replaced with programs, belief, attitudes, and energy that support us to have positive, healthy, active lives, regardless of age or diagnosis. As you breathe in, let the abdomen expand or fill up. I have a patient who has had migraines all her life; they are going away as she takes homeopathic remedies, breathes, and releases the traumas she has been storing for a lifetime. Her head was full of objections to everything around her. The problem with having so many objections is it blocks the energy flow and creates tensions in us that cause us to be tense, ill and unhappy. For those of you who want to get started on letting go of the things you have felt obligated to hold on to prevent your life from being fully happy, whole, and well, I have a prescription for you—or, you can prescribe it for yourself—breathe deeply and slowly. You can pick up right where you are. Dr. Paula Koger, RN, MA, DOM specializes in techniques that assist in the release of toxins and issues that interfere with healing and cause sickness. Sickness becomes wellness and happiness when balance is restored. For more information, visit www. WealthOfHealthCenter.com or call 941-539-4232.

GreenLiving
Greenwashing Update
HOW TO BE A SMART SHOPPER by Ed Begley, Jr.
W
e may think we are protecting our family’s health and the environment by buying eco-friendly products, but a second look at some so-called “green” products may reveal we’ve been led astray. When companies hurry to cash in with new product lines touting natural living products, too many of the changes are more cosmetic (new packaging, appealing earthy logos) than chemical; sometimes toxicity levels decrease in only minimal amounts. With green marketing campaigns in overdrive, how can we be sure that we truly are selecting a certified safe product?
Hijacking True Eco-Trends
Greenwashing occurs when more money or time is spent on advertising and labeling green characteristics, than actually developing and implementing environmentally sound products and practices. Words such as “natural,” “non-toxic” and “eco-friendly” are now widely misused.
26
Although greenwashing has been around for nearly a quarter century, corporations today are committing to it at unprecedented levels as they go after the growing market for eco-friendly products. Companies have duly noted that even the average Jane is now interested in protecting the environment and is willing to pay a premium to help. When products and services are really green, everyone wins; but when they are suspect, everyone suffers, not only from a false sense of stewardship, but also from using products that might not even be safe, let alone eco-friendly, at all. The hijacking of green by irresponsible corporations is aptly characterized by Jay Westerveld’s initial 1986 report on greenwashing, first used to describe the reuse of towels in the hotel industry. His research implied that in-room signage stating that, “Reusing the hotel towels helps save the environment,” was more a ploy to increase reservations from patrons concerned about their environmental footprints
than an actual credo of hotel management. One can hardly assert environmental responsibility based on laundry alone, but many hotels did, even though they were not participating in any other forms of resource conservation, recycling, or waste reduction. The bottled-water industry is a more recent example. Amid mounting negative publicity about their unsustainable practices, these companies aggressively overhauled label designs and switched to thinner plastic bottles. Yes, the new form is less wasteful, but drinking bottled water remains among the most environmentally unfriendly habits. In addition, drinking from plastic, made with petrochemicals, is unhealthy, according to a Harvard School of Public Health study published in 2011 in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Thankfully, the tide is turning in many companies with integrity. For example, in the 20 years since Westerveld’s report, more hotels are starting to introduce genuine environmental reforms, but so much more progress is needed across-the-board in business that the true pioneers stand out. Unfortunately, given the creativity of evolving greenwashing tactics, it is becoming more difficult to distinguish between authentic eco-alterations and mere overtures to green living. “Buyer beware” still applies.
Green Products Walk the Talk
Here are some telltale signs of greenwashing.

Fluffy or ambiguous language. Beware of terms such as “all natural,” “organic,” or “free of [insert scary chemical name].” These terms are not government regulated, and mean nothing. Even the “organic” monicker has multiple definitions that are meaningless unless a product is “Certified Organic” by a respected institution that issues objective standards. Partial or nonexistent list of ingredients. The entire list should be on the label for 100 percent transparency. Unverified health claims. Many companies lie or outright fabricate claims or data. Demand to see supporting scientific studies. A questionable parent company. If a product or manufacturer is owned by a company notorious for toxic outputs, chances are that the product’s formula has undergone only minimal changes from the original, non-green version. Consumers are not powerless. “Our research shows that while some consumers blindly trust green product claims, a growing number are doing research on product labels or going online,” says Kevin Tuerff, president of EnviroMedia and co-founder of the Greenwashing Index. “Unfortunately, the Federal Trade Commission is way behind in issuing new rules on green marketing that would protect consumers and help our environment.” GreenwashingIndex.com was launched in 2007 to help shoppers know how to identify vague or misleading claims and how to know when they can be confident of product authenticity. The good news is that more companies today than ever are honestly working toward becoming more green. Smart shoppers will help them on their way by consistently making the right environmental choice, not just a marketing choice. Buyer be aware. Actor, author and environmental activist Ed Begley, Jr., is a prominent figure in the green movement. Begley’s Earth Responsible Products of plant-based, sustainable and rapidly biodegradable ingredients compete with their nongreen counterparts (BegleysBest.com). www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com

Quantum Health Energy: Natural, ManMade, and In Our Bodies by Hanoch Talmor, M.D.
S
ince its creation, the Earth has been immersed in energy that is manifested as waves. These waves originate from the solar system, the universe, the earth, and the life forms created on it. These waves are natural waves. In the last 100 years, man has created technologies utilizing electricity. These also generate waves and include electromagnetic fields from radio, TV, microwave, cell phones and towers, the electrical grid, appliances, etc. New types of energy waves were created in our environment that did not exist previously. These man-made waves are artificial waves. Every naturally occurring wave in nature has a vortex shape (threedimensional spiral). These natural waves permeate the body and give information to the water molecules. The waves are changing continuously day and night, as well as with each season. They provide continuous information to the body, and modulate all its functions, such as biorhythms, organ functions, glandular functions, DNA function, and protein production. Traditional Chinese medicine recognizes that all major organs in our body have different hours of optimal function during each 24-hour period. Without the information that originates from the natural waves around us, the glands and the organs of our body could neither function, nor communicate with each other properly,
28
and the body would not be able to adapt to its environment. The human body is made mostly of water. Water is the “space” filling the body, just as the air fills the space around us; everything in a human body from DNA molecules to cells is surrounded by water. Water in nature, as well as in our body, serves as a recording mechanism, storage system, and information carrier—much like a computer hard drive. The angle in a water molecule can vary from 88° to 108° between the two hydrogen atoms, and the oxygen atom. The larger the angle, the more energy is stored in the molecule. The trajectory of the electrons can change when it interacts with external waves; this creates infinitesimal possibilities of configurations, or units of information in the water molecules. One manifestation in nature of this phenomenon is a snowflake. No two snowflakes are alike. Each snowflake visually represents the information stored in the water molecules when it crystallizes. This has been confirmed by Masaru Emoto’s research on water crystallization. It demonstrates visually the effect of energy, even thought, on water. Visit www.masaruemoto.net for more information. All man-made waves are symmetrical sinus waves. These artificial waves take over natural waves, thus giving the body artificial information. As a result, the normal functions of the DNA, organs and glands are disturbed.
Emoto’s water crystallization research shows how Electromagnetic Field (EMF) pollution affects water. Water crystals with beautiful images lose their symmetry after exposure to artificial waves. Dr. Emoto’s book, The Hidden Messages in Water, offers several photos demonstrating this effect on p.29-30. Electromagnetic pollution, like any other type of pollution such as chemicals and heavy metals, can have slow, cumulative effects that might not manifest for years. This energetic misinformation from electromagnetic pollution contributes to disease, premature aging, and emotional/mental stress. Because of the increased use of cell phone towers and other technologies, the concentrations of artificial waves in the environment have increased exponentially since the late 1990s. Many health practitioners use electromagnetic devices and magnets for healing. These modalities give the body energetic misinformation. Even if there is improvement in symptoms, in the long run the use of these devices will weaken the body and contribute to more severe illnesses. This phenomenon is similar to the effect of chemical drugs, which suppress symptoms. In emergencies they can be life-saving, but they always have long-term negative side effects. The energy medicine disciplines which employ machines and artificial waves can also have long-term negative effects. Many practitioners claim that their electromagnetic and magnetic devices generate natural waves, or natural ... Continued on Page 30

t’s quick. It’s easy. It isn’t gourmet, and it isn’t really Mexican. But this dish is mostly organic, healthy, tasty, celebratory, and fun to dip. Many variations and add-ins are possible. This recipe concept came from a party dish served at an E-One gathering many, many years ago. Thanks, Phyllis and Ron. This dip is “fantastic, and getting better.”
Assembly: Let cream cheese thaw to room temperature; spread evenly across bottom of baking dish or pie pan. Drain canned tomatoes; layer tomatoes over cream cheese. Distribute one cup of shredded cheese over tomatoes. Gently spoon chili over cheese. Place in pre-heated 350° oven uncovered for 15 minutes. Remove from oven, turning it OFF, and sprinkle remaining cup of shredded cheese over chili. Immediately return to stillwarm oven for five minutes or until cheese crust is melted. Remove from oven, apply cilantro garni. Serve hot and use tortilla chips for dipping.
Hardware: Large pie pan or 2 qt. baking dish. Ingredients: 1 8-oz. package regular cream cheese 1 can (14.5 oz.) organic diced tomatoes 1 can (14.5 oz.) organic chili 2 cups shredded Mexican cheeses Finely chopped fresh cilantro Organic blue corn/yellow corn tortilla chips
Recipe notes: I use Amy’s Organic Black Bean chili;
any style will do. My canned tomatoes are Muir Glen Organic Fire-Roasted with Roasted Garlic, Petite Diced Tomatoes. Again, any style will do. My cheese of choice is four-cheese Mexican blend of Monterey Jack, cheddar, asadero and quesadilla. The chips are Garden of Eatin’ Black Bean yellow corn tortilla chips and Garden of Eatin’ Blue Chips, both made with organic corn.

... Continued from Page 28 magnetic fields. This is false because one cannot generate natural waves or fields with any device plugged into an electrical source or a battery. This principle is also true for man-made magnets. These claims are like saying that a perfectly natural cucumber can be created in a laboratory. There are consequences to exposure to artificial waves. People who work in front of computer monitors are exposed to intense electromagnetic pollution, and in time often suffer severe health problems within months, or years. People who live under high power lines, and near cell phone towers, for long periods of time may have a higher incidence of cancer and other health problems. People who use cell phones and portable DECT cordless phones may have health problems related to the brain, neck, and head. It is imperative to minimize exposure to these waves, and to use mitigating technologies to reduce or eliminate these effects. In the last 11 years I have used Biosyntonie® devices to mitigate EMF pollution effectively. Biosyntonie® utilizes micro-crystallization in ceramic discs that generate natural waves by resonance from natural as well as artificial waves in our environment. These waves restore the correct information to the body, and alleviate the harmful effects of various man-made artificial waves. Dr. Hanoch Talmor, M.D. practices in Gainesville. A Job? A Career? Or A Life Mission
The Satvatove Founders Speak
Dr. David Wolf and Marie Glasheen MG: I have been hearing people speak about life direction—“What is our contribution, our life direction?” When people feel dissatisfaction, they try out different professions. I would like to explore this theme and process. For me, it took some time to find my special contribution. I had many jobs, and was with several organizations, before I was confident that I was doing precisely the work I am supposed to be doing. DW: Thanks, Marie. This is a major theme in what we do—life purpose. To the extent that we connect with “Who am I?” and get really clear about it, then we connect with our service nature, our contribution. I know in my coaching, I have little interest in helping people find a better job. One of our themes is “never work again.” As Confucius said, “If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work.” Connecting with genuine service in the context of self-realization is more about being than about doing. MG: It’s interesting how people can discover whether something is their service. For example, I think of my own situation, being a coach. This is a natural expression for me, and also I got training to refine my innate propensity. DW: To stay with your example of coach training, I have heard people
say, “I have been doing this all my life. People come to me, and they say I am a good listener. I find a lot of joy and fulfillment in the process.” So this could be one indicator, to ask yourself, what have I been doing all of my life? What is my natural skill set? And then all of the different types of schools and trainings, they help us sharpen those skills. Sometimes I invite clients to consider the “billion-dollar question”—what would you do if you had a billion dollars in the bank? This question isn’t primarily intended to point to how one would use the money, but rather to how one would use their time if finances were no object. Living in such a question can move us to realization of our life purpose. MG: So, someone who is naturally a coach, they feel like people come to them for guidance, and direction. I know for me, I feel deeply fulfilled as a coach. I can see that all through my life, even in childhood, people were coming to me naturally. I can also see I was not as effective to really create deep transformation—but now that I have had training, my satisfaction with and capacity to do my true service has deepened and expanded. DW: Yes, expanding our toolbox is essential. We may already be coaches at heart, but we deepen our education to gain mastery of the art and science of standing for transformation, being an inspiration for people. We learn how to create sacred space. MG: I appreciate your insight, and I see how this was true in my own life. I followed my intuition, and learned some skills, and now I do what I love to do every day. I do this with the knowing that I am doing my true service, following my soul’s calling. Laser Enhanced Stress Reduction Therapy by Dr. Michael J. Badanek, DC, BS, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM(P

tress has been scientifically proven to contribute to many symptoms and illnesses. According to the American Medical Association, stress is a contributing factor in more than 75% of diseases. In fact, current research suggests that stress contributes to many common ailments including musculo-skeletal disorders, headaches and migraines, common colds, sinusitis, digestive issues, insomnia, depression, dependency, skin irritations, excessive weight gain/loss, nausea, allergies, asthma, heart disease, ADD/ADHD and many others. At our clinic we are incorporating a new state-of-the-art system that not only identifies harmful stressors, but provides a non-invasive therapy using bioenergetic frequencies and LED light therapy through traditional acupuncture points to condition the body and effectively manage the stress so that you maintain your optimal health. We are exposing ourselves to more stresses than ever. Whether it’s financial stress, family pressures, environmental stressors such as hay fever or pollen, work-related stress or other types of stress, these all take a heavy toll on our bodies and minds. We can’t always remove the physical stressors or make the financial problems disappear, but what we can do is change how your body copes with the stressors from a health perspective. By receiving this therapy, your body creates a barrier so that the stressors no longer deteriorate your www.GoNaturalAwakenings.com
health, thus allowing your body to heal and to function at optimal levels. During the first visit, patients receive a 100-point wellness inspection utilizing an FDA-cleared biofeedback device that provides a report of findings identifying what stressors may be contributing toward their health issues. These findings are prioritized from the most severe to the least severe and indicate whether they are contributing toward acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term) conditions. Our device is capable of detecting more than 60,000 different stressors, which may precipitate many of the disease issues affecting Americans today. After the inspection, we then can go and address any one or more of these points and further evaluate within the 60,000 total points which can be identified and treated by the machine. Once the stressors are identified, the therapy sessions are started by transmitting a series of bio-energetic frequencies, unique to each individual, back into the body, conditioning the body to no longer react negatively when exposed to the stressors. Most patients see excellent responses within 6-7 therapy sessions. For many this has been a godsend. With the relief of stressors, many conditions affecting people just go away. One good example is from one of my patients who could not consume any dairy products; if he did, he would have severe abdominal distress, headaches, and pains throughout his body. The patient, who was a doctor, traveled all over this country for natural and traditional remedies with no avail. Homeopathic remedies, prescription medication and the like
were all dismal failures. He had the 100-point wellness inspection and it definitely showed dairy as a major stressor. However, digging deeper into the 60,000, it was found that the problem was in the pasteurization of the milk, not the dairy product itself. After a brief session of treatments with the unit, the patient’s dairy intolerance was totally corrected and to date can consume any and all dairy products with no consequences. These same results occur time and time again with countless patients who have the correct stressor(s) identified and reversed. We urge all who have issues which have not responded well or are returning for constant medical/ alternative therapies to consider this form of non-invasive evaluation and care. It may just change you life from the constant or recurring issues plaguing you or your loved ones. Dr. Michael Badanek has been serving the Central Florida region for more than 32 years in active clinical practice. Dr. Badanek is a licensed Chiropractic Physician with extensive continued training in alternative complementary medicine including nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathy, applied kinesiology, functional and traditional allopathic medicine, and electrodermal screening, with board certifications in homeopathy, naturopathic medicine, and clinical nutrition. His real love is treating patients with all types of conditions with alternative/functional medicine, especially people with an ailment which has not responded to traditional or alternative treatments. detoxification For decades, Americans have increasingly turned to “alternative” forms of medicine and natural treatments. They have sought help for all kinds of diseases and conditions that were not helped by traditional Western medicine, which is often characterized by surgery and narcotics.
Lemire Clinic focuses on “functional natural medicine,” which does not rely only on invasive procedures or drugs. It combines modern science with ancient healing wisdom from different parts of the world, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). At Lemire Clinic, we combine various natural therapies with safe, proven medical treatment to help remove stress, reduce pain and anxiety, manage symptoms and promote well-being. Using these non-traditional pain management techniques and detoxification therapies, we can cleanse the body of chemical, heavy-metal and environmental toxins. We have successfully reduced pain and symptoms and improved the overall condition for many patients.
