Live Auction Giving Opportunities

Raise the Paddle Thank You Gonzaga! During this season of Thanksgiving, there are countless reasons to be thankful for the gift of Gonzaga. Tonight, we hope you will raise your paddle and give a gift in appreciation for what Gonzaga has given to your son and your family. Give in honor of your son’s favorite teacher or coach... Or in recognition of the impact a retreat or service project had on him... Or as a shout-out to a team, club or extracurricular activity that has enriched your time at Gonzaga... Or as thanks for the friendships he has formed while on Eye Street. Regardless of what you’re most thankful for, we hope you will give generously when Rev. Stephen Planning, S.J. invites you to raise your paddle! All gifts raised during the raise the paddle portion of the Gala go to support the Gonzaga Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is one of the primary sources of faculty, scholarship and operational support for the school.

Thank you for your generous support!

Giving Opportunities The Father McKenna Center Table in the Carmody Center Please stop by the Father McKenna Center’s table to learn more about its service to the community and how you can volunteer. Established in 1983 by St. Aloysius Parish, the Father McKenna Center is dedicated to continuing the ministry of Fr. Horace B. McKenna SJ, who dedicated his life to serving the poor and marginalized members of our community. Together with Gonzaga College High School and the Gonzaga Mothers Club, the Center serves homeless men and very low income families by providing meals, showers, social programs and other services designed to shepherd the men and families to sustainable employment and housing and to help eliminate food insecurity. The Father McKenna Center operates a Day Program for Men Currently Experiencing Homelessness, as well as a Hypothermia program, where approximately 20 men are welcomed to stay overnight during the winter months. This year, as a result of anticipated changes to the Center, the Hypothermia program runs from October 17 to March 16, 2019. The Center also operates a Food Pantry, which serves more than 250 families each month by offering fresh quality produce, bread, milk, meat, eggs, and an array of nonperishable foods. Gonzaga students serve the Father McKenna Center by volunteering in the Food Pantry, assisting neighborhood families in finding needed groceries, and in the Day Program, by serving Midday Meals to the homeless men participating in the program. The Gonzaga Mothers Club provides dinner each evening of the Hypothermia program. The men in the Hypothermia program and Gonzaga families enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship by sharing a meal and conversation at table. The interaction is invaluable as many of the men lack the love and companionship of family and our Gonzaga families are able to provide support as the men transition to employment and out of homelessness. How Can You Help?

• Volunteer – the Father McKenna Center’s small staff always needs assistance in serving meals, helping in the food pantry, distributing clothing and in a myriad of additional ways.

• Sign Up – Join the Mothers Club in providing meals and serving the men in the Hypothermia Program until March 16, 2019. You can sign up by accessing the Sign Up Genius link on the Mothers Club webpage under the Father McKenna Center tab or via the newsletter and email blasts if you are a member of the Mothers Club.

Please visit the Father McKenna Center table in the Carmody Center so that we can offer our “thanks” for your willingness to serve and a memento from the Center staff.

Giving Opportunities The Gonzaga Christian Service Program Each year, the Gonzaga student body enjoys a breadth of opportunities for service through which students deepen their own commitment to doing justice, acting with love, and fulfilling their religious call to discipleship. Four years ago, following the retirement of Sr. Seton Cunneen, SND, the Campus Ministry office took up the tradition of service that she fostered so passionately in the community. The school’s Christian Service program includes both local, weekly service opportunities as well as more extensive immersion experiences. During the school year, students dedicate time to serving meals with the Father McKenna Center as well as with McKenna’s Wagon and the Campus Kitchen Program in the District. Other students travel to the Washington Jesuit Academy where they play chess and mentor younger students or to our neighboring senior center, Unique Residential, where they engage residents in conversation, card games, or an introduction to the internet and the use of a computer. Additionally, students are drawn to grow in their commitment to a faith that does justice through a rich service immersion program that brings students to vulnerable communities. This year’s trips will include weeks in Camden, NJ, one of the east coast’s most economically struggling cities, Apopka, Florida, where the boys live with and learn about the experience of farmworkers, and a week in South Dakota partnering with students at Red Cloud Indian School. For the fifth year, our students will investigate the realities of immigration at the U.S. border with Mexico in Nogales, Arizona. A group will return to Kansas City and the Jerusalem Farm Community, a Catholic lay intentional community focused on community building and environmentally sustainable practices. For the first time, Gonzaga will send a group to Los Angeles to stay with Dolores Mission for a trip that will include encounters with Homeboy Industries and the work of Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ. On these extraordinary service trips, Gonzaga students are given the opportunity to make working with the poor a “habit of the heart.” Through their encounters with the people of these communities, they are invited to understand injustices present in the world and are invited to share more the hopes and anxieties of those suffering. The list of service opportunities at Gonzaga is robust and students are welcome to stop in the Campus Ministry Office any time. The proceeds from tonight’s coat check will benefit Gonzaga’s summer service projects. Thank you for your generosity.
