A Note from the Director... Why an adaption of such a great play? The answers to that question are practical, and will probably disappoint many in the audience. After all, Cyrano de Bergerac has been successfully performed in high schools, it still is, and it was once long ago done at Gonzaga without the many changes and additions you’ll see in this adaptation. Then why not just run the original, in translation? Well, the first answer has do to with a reality that Mr. Buckley, Mr. Schlegel, and I struggle with every spring as we get set to announce our shows for the upcoming season: large-cast “straight” shows -- non-musicals -- appropriate for our stage are few, and we’ve done most of them. We can do a show with a cast of 14 or 15 and, maybe, divide a few of the roles, but it’s even getting tough to find quality, appropriate plays with casts that large, large enough, that is, to offer a sizeable group of students a chance to get on stage in the fall and polish their acting. By adapting a show, we’ve had a chance to bring a work we might otherwise not have considered to the stage, because, through adaptation, we were able to build in enough roles to make it worthwhile for actors to share their fall with us. A second answer has to do with a modern reality. Cyrano is a guy play. The only “big” female role is Roxane. To commit to doing Cyrano today, as Rostand wrote it, we at Gonzaga would have to commit to doing a play that offered a hearty role to only one girl. That seems unfair (and is a reason we’ve not previously attempted Cyrano), given the commitment so many of the girls in the show have made to us in previous plays. A final answer has to do with the original’s final act, which lasts a good 20 to 25 minutes or so and sees the stage taken over, pretty much, by the actors playing Cyrano and Roxane. To my mind, that’s an awful burden to place on high school actors -- and probably on high school theatre audiences who’d be kind enough to watch them through to curtain. No, for our stage, in our time, Cyrano is tempting but wrong. Still, that doesn’t mean we can’t, through adaptation, bring something of Rostand’s majestic poetry to life in a diner frequented by local kids in 2009 in Washington, DC. And so, in Cyrano de Bergerac: The Remix, you’ll watch these kids play music together, laugh, joke, fight, and ultimately learn a lot about friendship and how to mix new-age life with old-fashioned values. We blend a modern story with segments of dialog from Anthony Burgess’ translation of Cyrano to bring the two worlds -- those of the modern teen and that of the romantic musketeer -- together to show that not a whole lot has changed since Cyrano took Paris by storm in the 1600’s or Rostand wrote his story in the 1890’s. Love is still love, no matter the medium, regardless of the messenger, or what he looks like. That ideal needs no adapting.

PRODUCTION STAFF Mr. Paul Buckley ’86 (Co-Producer) is in his 12th year producing shows for the GDA. He loves being in the theatre, especially the Gonzaga Theatre - it is his home away from home. He is very grateful to Allan, Rob, and Meghan for being such a great team to work with. He wants to thank all of the kids, especially the seniors, for making the GDA such a special group to be a part of. He is privileged to be their leader. And finally, he thanks his wife Monica for waiting in the balcony for him each night, and for Anthony and Caroline who are always there to greet him when he gets home from the theatre each day, usually before he’s had a chance to take off his coat. Tom Cosgrove ‘05 (Technical Apprentice) worked with the GDA all four years while at Gonzaga as an usher and then as the House Manager. Tom graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2009, where he received a degree in economics. He was a 4 year member of the Varsity Men’s Basketball team and served as a team captain his senior year. He returned to Gonzaga this summer and is currently working in the Counseling Department at Gonzaga as part of the Alumni Service Corps. Mrs. Meghan Goldsmith (Co-Producer) is working on her 17th show as a member of the production staff. The number increases with every show, but this is the first time she’s really looked at it and felt old. That probably has something to do with the fact that now she’s both a real mommy and a production mommy, and it causes a lot more running around than she’s used to. She’s like to thank Paul, Allan and Rob for making this her favorite place to work, the cast and crew for being wonderful, and Dan and Matty for being her two favorite reasons to leave the theatre. Mr. Allan L’Etoile ‘73 (Director) has directed here a long time and really likes working with all the kids. Because he gets to work with them, he is very happy and thinks he has the best job in the world. Mr. Robert Theriaque (Technical Director) thanks his crew, especially the managers, Michael, Patrick, and Steve for their leadership and example. As always, he recognizes the support of his wife Teresa, the light of his life.

BIOS Timmy Anderson (Stage Crew) is a junior at Gonzaga and this is his first GDA production. He would like to thank all the cast and crew and his family. Andrew August (Stage Crew) is junior at Gonzaga, and this is his third year working on stage crew for the GDA. He probably listens to more music and has far worse eating habits than you do, and he really likes stupid teen horror flicks. Woohoo, 45 words! \m/(>.<)\m/ Cole Baker (Rock Band Member) is now in his first play at Gonzaga. He is very excited to be in the play. He would like to thank all of his fellow actores for their support during the play. Cat Brennan (Mrs. CJ/Eminent Child Psychologist), a Visitation junior, is so excited to be a part of the Gonzaga fall play Cyrano de Bergerac. Cat would like to thank Mr. L’Etoile for casting her and teaching her how to actually act. Also, she thanks the marvelous cast for making each afternoon rehearsal sublime. Kevin Carty (Sound Effects) is a 16 year old junior, and this is his 5th play with the GDA. He owes his excellent construction skills to Blink 182, Michael Woodhull, Arizona Iced Tea, Connor Casey, Taco Bell, Mariah Rollins, ska Music, Nebs, and lots of decaffeinated coffee. Will Clemens (Co-House Manager) spent all summer training in a cave. His stub tearing and audience member guiding skills are the best they’ve ever been. In fact, he has moved up to the number two spot on the international usher ranking, behind that guy with four arms who can take two viewers at once. Will wants like to thank Denis for having such wonderful hair. Lizzie Connolly (Stage Crew) is a junior at Georgetown Visitation. She would like to thank Mr. Buckley and Mr. Theriaque for giving her the opportunity to be a part of the number one Stage Crew and Mama Claudia for being so amazing. Yay for chimichangas and blob fish! Cooper D’Anton (Stage Crew) is on stage crew for Cyrano, and loving every minute. He especially wants to thank Meghan for writing his bio. Andrew Donilon (Stage Crew) is on stage crew for Cyrano, and loving every minute. He especially wants to thank Meghan for writing his bio.
Michael Douglas (Stage Manager) is a senior at Gonzaga. This is his seventh production with the GDA. He has previously been on the crew in TFP, Annie, AMND, WSS, TMW, and TPG. Steve Ernst (Light Manager) is a Gonzaga senior currently dealing with this whole “applying to college” thing. If that doesn’t work out, he plans to follow in Bartleby’s footsteps from the movie “Accepted”. He prides himself with inventing Light Crew Theme Nights and making the best fencing feature ever. Finally, to the person in seat L29, Steve is sitting right above you at the light board! (Come say hi.) Bridget Finnell (Rock Band Member), a freshman at Visitation, is very excited to be a part of the show. She would like to thank her family and her carpool drivers for all their support. Kerry Flanagan (Rock Band Member) is a senior at Stone Ridge and is thrilled to be in her fifth Gonzaga show (Annie, AMND, WSS, PG)! She would like to thank Mr. L’Etoile, Mr. Buckley, Mr. Theriaque, and the wonderful Meghan for everything! She would also like to thank her parents, brothers, the metro for not breaking down, cast, crew, and all past and present GDA members! Connor Forrester (Rock Band Member) is a junior and is thrilled to be in Cyrano which is his 5th show in GDA in which he plays numerous roles. He has previously played characters such as Percy in MW and Mouse in WSS. He would like to thank his fellow cast members, his family including his brother Kyle for introducing him to GDA, his friends, Bruce Springsteen, and God. Anna Gencarelli (Roxie) is very excited to be back with the GDA! Anna portrayed Kate Keller in last year’s fall production, The Miracle Worker, and was part of the ensemble for the spring musical, The Pajama Game. She would like to thank her director and cast for an amazing experience. Mary Gilstad (Ami Slam) is a junior at Washington International School. She returned from three years in Japan last summer and found out about Cyrano from her cousin Kieran McGuigan, whom she is thrilled to finally be in a play with! Mary has played Prince Edward in Richard III and Peter in Romeo & Juliet. She is glad to be finally be in a female role. Above all, she hopes this is going to be a memorable show! Nelson Gomes (Pops), a junior, is thrilled, despite the blood, sweat, and tears, to be in his very first GDA production. He would like to thank his mom for her support and you (yes, you!) for driving all the way to D.C. to see the show.
Congratulations to Anna Gencarelli and the entire cast & crew of Cyrano de Bergerac
We are so proud of you! All our love, Dad &Momma
Peter “Not a Freshman” Guerber (Stage Crew) is a senior at Gonzaga in his seventh GDA production. When he’s not working on stage crew or creating awkward situations, he’s busy fighting crime, getting angry for no apparent reason, and telling people how to pronounce his name correctly. He would like to thank his family, his friends, and Meghan for giving him 65 words to write down his completely random thoughts. Patrick Gunawan (Loft Manager) is a Senior and this is his 3rd show. He is happy that he could contribute as Loft Manager and is happy that he was able to build a wonderful set with such a great stage crew. This is Maggie Hanlon’s (Molly) second Gonzaga play. She would like to thank Liza for driving her and CAROLINE LANG :) Shout out to all my friends at Visi. And Caroline Lang and Caroline Lang and Caroline Lang. This is Phillip Helgert’s (Punkman) first Gonzaga play. He would like to thank Michael Cera, Jason Segel, and Neil Patrick Harris for creative inspiration. Watch “How I Met Your Mother” Mondays at 8 et. on CBS. Michael Irving (Stage Crew) is a Gonzaga senior; this is his third production to be a part of while on stage crew. During his time with the GDA there has very seldom been a lack of laughs or tears. As a behind the scenes worker you won’t be seeing him much, and if you do it means he’s doing something wrong. Enjoy the show! Sarah Jenks (Colleen) is a junior at Archbishop Spalding High School and is super excited to be playing the mean girl of the show after her many years of lovable, charming characters. She has recently played Babe, Helen Keller, and Hermia on the Gonzaga stage and wants to thank everyone who has made this experience so memorable! Eliot Johnson (CJ) is EXTREMELY excited to be appearing in his 7th show with the GDA. His love for the arts has only grown because of this historic theater and great program. He would like to thank his Mom, brother, godfather, Mr. L’Etoile for being EXTRA patient with him, Mr. Buckley for keeping the faith alive, Mr. T for building unbreakable sets, and Meghan for always reaffirming that I am now her SECOND favorite kid. Thanks and enjoy!! Caroline Lang (Meghan’s Little Helper) isn’t even in the show and doesn’t turn things into Meghan on time. She is very sorry and hopes Meghan will forgive her. And if she reads her bio once the playbill is printed, she will realize that Meghan thinks she’s pretty awesome.
Forged from the Earth’s core in 4627 BC, Denis Leahy (Co-House Manager) actually invented the art of ushering. The next day he invented the snuggie. He would like to thank Will Clemens for mentioning him in his bio. He would also like to take this opportunity to officially endorse Jason Statham in the race against time. <3 VStew. (Your ad here) Colleen L’Etoile (Missy), a freshman at Visitation, is in her first GDA production. She’d like to thank her family and crazy Uncle Allen for supporting her. Nathan L’Etoile (Mac) is thrilled to be in his second Gonzaga play. He wants to thank his dad/director for all his hard work and is excited to watch Cyrano de Bergerac: The Remix on Broadway when it becomes a hit. Izzy Lynn (TC) is a freshman at Georgetown Visitation in her first Gonzaga show. She thanks you all for coming to support the GDA, and thinks that Meghan is wonderful for a multitude of reasons, but mostly because she wrote this bio. Liza Manfred (Suzi) is pretty darn excited to be in her sixth Gonzaga show. Despite the temporary absence of her fellow Visitation seniors - fine I get it, college is important - rehearsal is still a highlight of her day. She would like to send huge thanks and love to her carpools (especially the ukulele players), her family for reminding her that knowing chemistry facts doesn’t make her seem cool, and the grassy knoll for CT’s and the best lunches ever. You all make the day a bit more fun. This is Nicholas Marcou’s (Roadie) fifth GDA production. Just four short years ago, Nick had only 25 words to use in his bio. Well, take that and add FORTY FIVE to it. AWWWW YEAH. Unfortunately, he can’t think of anything to write…how delightfully ironic. Uh…he’d like to thank Mr. L’Etoile and Mr. Buckley for all their hard work…and…oh, yeah! He’d also like to thank Meghan for Ted Marcou (Stage Crew), a sophomore, is participating in his first GDA production as a member of the stage crew. He built a platform! He would like to thank his parents, Misters T, Buckley and L’Etoile and his brothers for supporting him. Keep on truckin’! Kieran McGuigan (Ernie Weiner) is a senior at Gonzaga. This is his second show with the GDA. He would like to thank his cousin Mary for coming back from Japan to take over the GDA with him as well as his inspirations, Brendan, Griffin, Maggie, Mr. L’Etoile for teaching him how to write, and Mr. Buckley for teaching him how to turn things in. It’s been fun.
Nick & Ted Marcou: How to say this best? Your devoted relations are utterly thrilled and enamored by your endeavors put forth for our enjoyment! Whether it be emoting before the footlights, Roadie, or muscularly toiling backstage, Ted, your contributions are much-appreciated and a pleasure to behold. With warm gratitude to the entire troupe, the band of stalwart laborers and their grand superiors!
Congratulations to Pancho and Billy and the cast and crew of Cyrano de Bergerac! Love, Mom & Dad Rothwell and Mom & Dad Roca
Brendan McMahon (Brett) is very happy to be in his 4th Gonzaga show and is looking forward to kissing the stage in the spring! He had the great opportunity to be Levi in Summerstock’s Joseph this past summer. He would also like to thank his family and friends for supporting him over the years and hopes that everyone has a great time at the show! Metro group rules. Brandyn Hamilton Miller (Stage Crew) would like to interrupt this playbill in order to say nothing at all. What you are reading right now will probably never affect you in any way what-so-ever. So why are you reading this? I have no idea, maybe its because you are so intrigued by my writing, or maybe you just can’t stand watching the show. Whatever the reason, you just wasted your time. JJ Mitchell (Equal) is a freshman who is amazingly excited to be in his first GDA play. He thanks his family, friends, and peer from the 2013 class for their support. Timmy Moran (Max Planck) is a freshman at Gonzaga and this is his first GDA production. Over the summer he was in West Side Story (Action). Reed Nagel (Stage Crew) is a member of the stage crew for Cyrano, and is loving every second of it. He thanks Meghan for writing this bio. Jack Plantamura (Val): Like a fledgling swan takes to the skies, Jack makes his debut on the Gonzaga stage with both elegance and determination. His credo? “Pain is temporary; glory is eternal.” Jack hopes the tale of his first performance will be sung ‘round campfires for generations. Brian Potochney (Stage Crew), a junior, is really happy to be on stage crew for his third GDA production. He would like to thank Mariah Rollins, and no one else. This is the third show Andrew Ravenscroft (Stage Crew) has worked on for the GDA. He enjoys many things. He is currently a sophomore at Gonzaga. Billy Roca (Stage Crew) is a member of the stage crew for Cyrano, and is loving every second of it. He thanks Meghan for writing this bio. Pancho Rothwell (Sound Effects) is a junior at Gonzaga and is in his fourth GDA play as a member of stage crew. He is just realizing how much he took for granted getting a ride home from Mariah everyday. He also knows MPD’s middle name. nbd.
Reagan Shawn (Chris) is now in his first play at Gonzaga. As a sophomore, he feels excited to perform tonight and in future plays. He loves his family. This is Mac Smith’s (Laxer 2) first play ever. He is more than excited to participate in this awesome event. He enjoys long walks on the beach and he loves listening to music. Will Speros (Stage Crew) is a junior at Gonzaga in his third production. He would like to thank all of his friends on the cast and crew (especially Lizzie, his ma) for being so great. He misses Mariah a lot, and hopes you enjoy the show. Michael Sullivan (Laxer 1) is a junior at Gonzaga and is premiering in this GDA production. He’s kind of a big deal. People know him. He’s very important. He has many leather bound books and his apartment smells of rich mahogany. David Tondreau (Rock Band Member) is psyched for his first Gonzaga play ever! “Everyone has been fun to act with and very supportive. Eagles fly high!” Griffin Voltmann (Mr. CJ/Dr. Love Expert III) is a senior at Gonzaga, a 3.5-year-member of the GDA, and the only person you will see on stage whose nose is 100% genuine. Really. He would now like to use his remaining twenty-eight words to thank all of the little people who helped him achieve his dream of playing Dr. Love III on the great stage of Gonzaga, but has, regrettably, run out of room. This is Anna Zimmerman’s (Maria) fourth play at Gonzaga. “Thanks to everyone for making this show so much fun! I love you all!”
The Math Department thinks it’s as plain as the nose on one’s face Cyrano will be great!! Congratulations to the cast and crew.
