s I told the students, faculty, staff, and guests assembled for our annual Charter Day Assembly a few weeks ago, I’ve been around long enough to know not to designate a favorite class. However, I’m not likewise constrained from expressing a preference for a
particular school year, and I judge this 2009-2010 school year to have been one of the best in my sixteen-year tenure. The Eagles really brought home for me the meaning of having a “banner year.”
Gonzaga College High School is a Roman Catholic, private, independent college-preparatory school for young men, sponsored by the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic Order, and governed by an independent Board of Directors. Gonzaga does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, admission policies, financial aid programs, athletic or other school-administered programs, nor does it discriminate on the basis of sex in its hiring practices.
Yes, there will be nine more league championship banners to hang on the walls of the Carmody Center. But success this year has hardly been limited to athletics. The good news began at the very beginning with the announcement that nine of our students had been named semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Exam, notable since Washington, D.C., had the highest qualifying score in the country. This was followed shortly after by news that 152 students had been recognized as AP scholars thanks to their performance in last spring’s Advanced Placement tests. Meanwhile, admissions season saw another near record number of applications, a turn of events complicated by a higher than usual yield rate on our acceptances. This left us in a kind of good news/bad news situation. The good news was that Gonzaga has become an ever more popular

school; the bad news was that we could not accommodate so many qualified students on a long wait list, including some alumni sons and student brothers. On a less ambiguous note, the members of the class of 2010 earned admission to a wide range of excellent colleges, garnering a total well in excess of $16 million dollars in merit-based scholarships! While many factors contributed to this outstanding year, I am especially grateful for the tireless

Gonzaga Alumni Association Honors Wayne Wyvill ’70 as 2010 Man of the Year
Wayne Wyvill ’70 (left), the 2010 Gonzaga Alumni Association Man of the Year, with Gonzaga President Reverend Allen P. Novotny, S.J.
T
he Gonzaga Alumni Association honored Wayne M. Wyvill of the class of 1970 as its 2010 Man of the Year at the 61st Annual Father-Son-Faculty Communion Breakfast on May 2. Wayne was chosen because of his longtime loyalty and support of Gonzaga and its mission; there isn’t much that he has not done for the betterment of the school during his 44-year association with it. Upon learning of Wayne’s selection for this honor, his classmate, Tim Dolan, offered a few words about Wayne and Gonzaga: “This morning you are honoring a man whose friendship I’ve enjoyed for 44 years. I first met Wayne Wyvill in the fall of 1966, our freshman year at Gonzaga…I believe we both saw the myriad opportunities that Gonzaga offered two scared

kids from the suburbs…(and) we realized not all lessons took place in the classroom. Our time at Gonzaga took place during a period of great transition and we faced many challenges both in the classroom and socially. I have always believed that, in particular, the class of 1970 was forged by the times we enjoyed on Eye Street. Wayne, in my opinion, is the quintessential representative of Gonzaga’s class of 1970. Hardworking, loyal, family-oriented, generous, and simply mindful of his roots is an appropriate description of Wayne. These qualities make him the perfect candidate for the honor you have chosen to bestow on him today.” In the years following his graduation from Gonzaga, Waynes’ path took him through Prince George’s Community College, the University of Maryland, and working for the D.C. Fire Department. Changing careers, he moved into the business of real estate and became a swift success. He established Re/ Max 100 Real Estate. Inc., which he successfully guided for twenty years and then sold to ReMax International. Currently, he is doing private executive consulting and coaching, seminars, and inspirational speaking. Even as he was building a successful business career and raising a family with his wife, Debra, Wayne found time to coach ball teams and serve on several school and community boards and political action committees. Gonzaga is understandably proud of Wayne’s personal accomplishments, but these serve only to hint of the story of uncommon
devotion and generosity Wayne has chosen to bestow on his alma mater. First, as Alumni Class Captain for the Class of 1970, Wayne has always been the glue for his classmates and Eye Street. Whether it is for class reunions, a special event, or simply making calls for the Annual Fund, Wayne has always served and continues to serve. In 2003, Gonzaga President Rev. Allen Novotny, S.J., cited Wayne’s business acumen and longstanding devotion to Gonzaga when he asked him to chair the In Medias Res: At the Heart of Things capital campaign. This highly successful capital campaign, which surpassed its goal of $12.5 million dollars, greatly improved student life at Gonzaga by creating a new cafeteria, and the Upper and Lower Commons areas. The campaign also provided the first complete renovation of the Gonzaga Jesuit residence in over 80 years. When it came to the recognition of his own leadership gift, Wayne, with typical humility and generosity of spirit, asked that the gift be used instead to recognize and honor the service of Brother Jon King, who has filled various roles at Gonzaga since 1968. Wayne is a current member of the Gonzaga Board of Directors; he is also the chairman of the Development Committee and he serves on the Buildings and Grounds Committee. He and his wife Debra have been married for thirty-six years and they have three children: Rebecca, Wesley ’01, and Zachary ’09. The Gonzaga Alumni Association is honored to name Wayne Wyvill ’70 as its 2010 Man of the Year. n

Charlie’s longtime friends “roasted” him, including Gonzaga President Rev. Allen Novotny, S.J., former Gonzaga parent and board member Mrs. Sandra McMurtrie (P’88), and classmate Rev. Ray Kemp ’59. Charlie got the last word of the evening, though, and returned some jabs in his “rebuttal.”
In a manner typical of Charlie, he selected a beneficiary that touches the lives of the vast majority of the boys on Eye Street. At his request, the proceeds from the Second Alumni Roast will help support the ongoing needs of Gonzaga’s hundreds of outstanding scholar-athletes and the Gonzaga gonzaga.org
Athletic Department, which was ranked as the #1 athletic program in Washington, D.C., and #18 nationally, by Sports Illustrated in 2008-2009. This year, the Eagles could be ranked even higher after claiming a championship or league title in eleven different sports during the 2009-2010 year, including soccer, cross-country, water polo, basketball, ice hockey, crew, golf, lacrosse, rugby, track, and tennis. The evening was a fine tribute to gonzaga.org

He is always willing to volunteer on behalf of Gonzaga and commit his resources to its betterment and the Gonzaga Alumni Association is pleased to honor him. n Gonzaga l Spring 2010

A Championship Year! Hockey Team Wins MAPHL Championship
The Gonzaga wrestling team, led by Coach Milton Yates ’97, enjoyed one of its best seasons under his leadership in 2009-2010. The Eagles won several matches against W.C.A.C. opponents and they finished third in the always competitive conference tournament, their highest finish in eight years. In late February, Gonzaga won the D.C. Wrestling Championship for the second time under Coach Yates (the first was in 2005). In addition to the team’s success, there were several individual postseason awards for the Eagles. Coach Yates was named the Washington Post Coach of the Year and Paul O’Neill ’11 was named
The Gonzaga track-and-field team won its second consecutive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship on May 15. The Eagles were led by tournament MVP Stacy Robinson ’10, Billy Ledder ’10, Aaron Shepperd ’10, and Azani Pinkney ’10, all of whom finished in first place in various events. Gonzaga’s relay teams also won the boys’ 4x100 meter and 4x800 meter relays. Congratulations to Coach Alvin Maddox and the entire track-and-field team! n
Lacrosse Team Wins W.C.A.C. Title The Gonzaga varsity lacrosse team defeated DeMatha Catholic HS, 9-8, on May 7 for its first W.C.A.C. championship since 1998. The Eagles trailed the Stags for three quarters and were down by five goals heading into the fourth quarter, but a furious comeback enabled them to tie the game at 8 late in the quarter and force overtime. A DeMatha turnover in overtime enabled the Eagles to attack and score the game-winner, giving them the championship. Congratulations to W.C.A.C. Golf Team Wins W.C.A.C. Championship The Gonzaga varsity golf team defeated DeMatha Catholic HS by five strokes to claim the 2010 W.C.A.C. championship on May 12 at the University of Maryland. The Eagles trailed the Stags by twelve strokes after the first round of play on May 11, but they closed the gap to eight strokes after nine holes in the second round. They then plowed ahead, picking up thirteen strokes over the next two holes for a five-stroke lead when play was suspended after eleven holes because of thunderstorms. Max Ruge ’11 shot four under par in the final round to tie for second place in the individual competition. Keegan Boone ’12 shot one under par, Addison Coll ’13 and Joe Marvin ’12 shot even par, Kevin Keehan ’10 was three over par, and Brian McCormick ’11 finished at four over par. Congratulations to Coach Rob Theriaque and the entire golf team! n
Tennis Team Wins W.C.A.C. Title The Gonzaga varsity tennis team won the 2010 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship on May 6 at Olney Manor Recreational Park. The Eagles bested their closest competition by thirteen points (39-26) for their second conference title in the last three years and the victory capped an undefeated season (14-0) in conference play for Gonzaga. In singles matches, Gonzaga took first place at #1 with Anton Zykov ’13 (undefeated all season) and #4 with Shane Hannon ’10 (undefeated over
the past two seasons). In doubles matches, Gonzaga took first place at #2 with Aaron Artiles ’10 and Shane Hannon ’10 (undefeated all season)
and #3 with Mike Artiles ’10 and Griffin McDermott ’11. Congratulations to the Eagles and Head Coach Ariel Laguilles ’96! n
The Gonzaga rugby team had another solid season in 2010, as the Eagles won their second consecutive Metro Area Varsity Rugby Conference (MAVRC) crown, their eleventh consecutive Potomac Rugby Union (PRU) title, and their fourth straight Mid Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) championship. With the MARFU win, Gonzaga earned the #4 seed at the USA Rugby High School National Championship in Salt Lake City Utah, where they advanced to the tournament final before falling to fellow Jesuit school and perennial power Xavier HS (NY). The Eagles finished the season ranked #2 in the nation. Congratulations to all of the rugby coaches and players on a tremendous season! n Gonzaga l SPring 2010

ith the demands of the academic year behind them, Gonzaga faculty and staff members often use the summer months to catch up on their own “summer reading.” The following is a sample of selections that some of Gonzaga’s teachers and administrators will tackle this summer, as well as some of their recommendations for an enjoyable summer of reading. n
gonzaga.org
I plan to read Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein. I think this is a good choice because it is “A Best Book of the Year,” chosen by The Economist magazine. It analyzes our decisionmaking as consumers and why we choose what we choose. It has a little bit of everything: business, psychology, economics, politics, and popular culture. The authors attempt to educate their readers on how to make better choices for the future and how to gently influence others to do so as well.

Mrs. Helen Free (English Department) The most rewarding moments in teaching come when a student teaches me something. Greg Mortimer ’02 has worked for a few years now at Harper Collins and he loves his job. We’ve stayed in touch and a few weeks ago I received a box of books and a note from him: “Some books for you at last. Just Kids is really exceptional – you don’t have to be familiar with Patti Smith and her music to appreciate how good the prose is. Making Toast is a slim, sad, but life-affirming memoir by Roger Rosenblatt and concerns a Bethesda family dealing with the loss of a family member. It’s never sentimental, and often very funny. Then there’s Proust’s Overcoat, translated from Italian – interested to hear what you think.” Touched by his interest, impressed by his insight, I’m going to read from Greg’s list this summer. Dr. Harry Rissetto ’89 (Religious Studies Department) I am looking forward to finally reading Horace: Priest of the Poor by John Monagan. McKenna was such an important figure on the DC landscape in the latter half of the 20th century as an exemplary model of a life lived for others. The more I listen to his story the better.
Mr. David Norton ’00 (English Department) I’m reading What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures by Malcom Gladwell, a compilation of his magazine writing over the years to follow his books The Tipping Point and The Outliers. I’ve really gotten into nonfiction as a literary genre. I’m getting my Masters in journalism at Georgetown, and I really appreciate good reporting and good story-telling. Malcolm Gladwell’s style is crisp, clean, direct, and represents a style I would like my students to emulate. His topics are interesting, well-researched, and he makes them entertaining. I like a good book that makes you say, “Ah, ha!” and teaches you something. Novels do this, but non-fiction does it in a more practical way, and right now, I think Gladwell is one of the best. Rev. Bob Rokusek (Campus Ministry Office) I intend to read this summer Receiving The Council: Theological and Canonical Insights and Debates by Ladislas Orsy, S.J. Les Orsy of Georgetown’s Law faculty is one of the wisest, most prudent Jesuits whom I have met and I believe that I have met very many of these intelligent and good men over my forty years of association with the Society.

Mr. Rick Cannon (English Department)
Mr. Jeremy Young (Choral Arts Director)
I’m definitely going to tackle Studs Terkel’s Working. I understand it’s a great read, you can jump around in it as it’s not a sequential narrative, and it gives a terrific insight into the American spirit and attitude toward hard work. I think we all love work – need it, even. I certainly do! I’m interested also in perusing Thomas Sowell’s Intellectuals and Society. I love Sowell’s clean, unpretentious, and incontrovertible logic. I understand he goes back as far as, and perhaps even further than, Woodrow Wilson and argues for the damaging influence of the ideologue in American politics, a stance I’d like to explore given the current administration. Given the time, I might like to revisit an old favorite, Joseph Conrad, in his great novel Nostromo and also in his novella The Heart of Darkness. Conrad needs no explanation or defense. I was, in college, a lover of his work. I’d like to see if I still love it; I’m a little afraid, for all my fear’s tiny worth, that I’ll think he’s too wordy now and that an old icon will topple – but maybe not. “Reading is joy,” said Fr. Gene Nolan, S.J., veteran English teacher, mentor, and friend. I echo that, even as available hours via work and age, grow shorter.
I’m reading Don’t Stop The Carnival. I heard that Jimmy Buffett made it into a musical that had a short run some years ago. I’m about half way into it, and it’s fun and has side plot ideas about alcoholism, race relations, and greed that buttress the central concept that it’s never too late to take a leap of faith – in this case, to drop out of Manhattan society and become the proprietor of a Caribbean hotel. The writing seems the tiniest bit quaint these days, so ’60s, but like an old LP, it puts you right back to that era and is very satisfying. Mrs. Heather Sanders (Social Studies Department) I’ll be reading The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt by T.J. Stiles. It just won a National Book Award. Why am I interested in reading about Vanderbilt? He’s an extraordinary character, his name is known, but how many people really know much about him? Of the major league hitters of the Gilded Age (Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt), I know the least about him. I also hope to read three other biographies of Grover Cleveland, Rutherford Hayes, and Warren Harding that are part of the “American Presidents” series edited by Arthur Schlesinger. These are great little biographies, all under 150 pages, written by different authors.
Mr. Stephen Hanks (Fine Arts Department) I’m planning to read Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, a 1997 book by Jared Diamond, a professor of geography and physiology at UCLA. The book, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1998, attempts to explain why Eurasian civilizations have survived and conquered others, while attempting to refute the belief that Eurasian hegemony is due to any form of Eurasian intellectual, moral, or inherent genetic superiority.
12
Gonzaga l SPring 2010
Dr. Chris Schaefer (Modern Language Department) I plan on reading Edith Grossman’s fine translation of Cervantes’ classic Don Quixote de la Mancha. It is a contemporary translation that is rendered in the English of our day and so truly brings to life one of the great and earliest masterpieces of European literature. Mr. Mark Howell ’73 (Mathematics Department, Computer Science Department) My summer reading will include a book authored by Dr. Curt Thompson, father of Nathan Thompson ’12, entitled Anatomy of the Soul. It explores connections between neuroscience and spirituality. I’m eager to read it because, as Nathan speculated when he offered the book, both sides of the connection interest me.
