M e ss a g e from the
President
Dear Gonzaga Friends: The 2014-2015 school year has been an extraordinary one for Gonzaga in so many ways. There is no shortage of reasons to be proud of all that takes place here both in and out of the classroom! Our students have excelled academically with more than two-thirds of the student body achieving First, Second, or Third Honors for the first semester and the recently completed third quarter. The Retreat Program has seen nearly every student on campus participate in one retreat or another. This year, more than 175 juniors and seniors have taken part in the Kairos retreat and most of the sophomore class members have gone on overnight sophomore retreats. Additionally, the annual freshman class retreat was held during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend. In the arts, the Gonzaga Dramatic Association staged a modern interpretation of The Taming of the Shrew in the fall and Footloose: The Musical in the spring. Student artists, writers, and musicians continue to hone their talents and amaze with their creativity. Gonzaga’s athletic teams have made us proud this year, also. The varsity soccer team and varsity football team won their respective D.C. State Athletic Association championships in November and December. The varsity swim and dive team captured its fifth consecutive WMPSSDL title in late January. In late February, the varsity basketball team won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship in a thrilling doubleovertime game. One of the most significant happenings at Gonzaga this year is, of course, the Eye Street Renewal. The project continues on schedule and within budget and is slated for completion in July. In these pages, you’ll see some images showing the current progress alongside the architectural renderings. Please enjoy reading about some of what’s been happening at Gonzaga this year. And throughout the remainder of this year and beyond, please be assured of my continuing prayers for you and your loved ones. May God bless you for all that you do to support the young men of Eye Street. Sincerely,
Rev. Stephen Planning, S.J. President

The National Merit Scholars of Gonzaga
O
ne of the many things Gonzaga is known for is its rigorous academic curriculum. The school has a strong college preparatory course of studies, including Honors and Advanced Placement-level courses in most subjects. Historically, the Dean’s List for First, Second, and Third Academic Honors contains more than two-thirds of the student body. And while Gonzaga students are bright and talented young men, there are some among them who distinguish themselves even further in the classroom. These young men are Gonzaga’s National Merit Scholars. Currently, about 1.5 million students in approximately 22,000 high schools in the United States enter the National Merit Scholarship Program each year by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). About 34,000 of these students earn ‘Commended Student’ recognition, typically the 96th percentile of college-bound juniors who take the test. Twenty

Gonzaga students from the class of 2015 were named ‘Commended Students.’ These young men are:
Nicholas A. Bennett Paul J. Campion John C. Cruser Benjamin D. Forde John B. Maier III Fernando Mata Cordero Patrick M. Miskovsky Michael F. Penny Mitchell V. Pleasure Joseph T. Speetjens III
Jon J. Cameron, Jr. John A. Cashmere Patrick W. Dent Conor D. Lyons Kenneth R. Marrs John J. McGuinness III Brennan E. Novak John A. Perry Lucas W. Rozier John P. Veillette
Some 16,000 of the high-scorers, representing less than 1% of the nation’s high school graduating seniors, qualify as semifinalists. Washington, D.C., shared the highest qualifying score with Massachusetts, New Jersey, and U.S. territories and commonwealths outside the U.S. Six Gonzaga students qualified as semifinalists and then went on to be named as finalists. Those students from Gonzaga who earned National Merit Certificates are Thomas E. Benson, Joseph M. Clancy, Connor J. Gallagher, Patrick S. Grant, Luke D. Mullan, and John B. Owczarski. In addition to the National Merit Scholarship Program, Gonzaga had an outstanding participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes African-American students. This recognition is also based on PSAT scores. Kevon N. Turner was earned this recognition last year for Gonzaga. The Gonzaga community is proud of these young men for their incredible academic achievements and for representing themselves, their families, and their school with such distinction.

The 2014 St. Aloysius Medal
T
he Gonzaga community paid tribute to four distinguished individuals by presenting them with the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Medal on October 28, 2014, at the annual St. Aloysius Dinner. This year’s recipients were (pictured above, l-r) Dr. John S. Dillon ’48, Rev. Raymond M. Lelii, S.J., Mr. Brendan T. O’Neill, Sr. ’60, and Mrs. Martha “Marty” Tuohey. The award is recognition for individuals who have shown outstanding devotion and service to Gonzaga and the larger community. Each of these members of the Gonzaga family is truly deserving of this special honor. Dr. John Dillon ’48 graduated from Gonzaga as one of the top students in his class. He went on to graduate cum laude from Georgetown University and magna cum laude from Georgetown Medical School. After his postgraduate work, Dr. Dillon returned to Georgetown University Hospital in 1963 and began a 57-year career as a surgeon, administrator, and educator during which he was recognized many gonzaga.org
times for his exceptional skill. According to the late Gonzaga President Rev. Bernard Dooley, S.J., Dr. Dillon was one of a core of “true believers in Jesuit education on Eye Street” who helped resuscitate Gonzaga as it struggled in the mid-1970s. His ongoing devotion and generosity to his alma mater that began in one golden era for the school has helped bring the school to another. Rev. Raymond Lelii, S.J., was a fixture on Eye Street for 34 years and served in a variety of roles, most notably as a biology teacher and tennis coach. As an educator, he taught almost every student who passed through Gonzaga between 1965 and 1999. As a tennis coach, he led the Eagles to eleven consecutive Catholic league championships between 1985 and 1995 and earned Coach of the Year honors twice. He was inducted into Gonzaga’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Fr. Lelii also established the McKenna Center Food Drive, which continues to this day. His dedication to Gonzaga and its mission of forming ‘men for others’ has been
an example for all who hold the school dear. Mr. Brendan O’Neill, Sr. ’60, has a deep connection with Gonzaga. In addition to being one of five brothers to graduate from the school, he also is the father of two alumni. In the 1980s, he helped get the lacrosse program started and since then the school has benefited aesthetically from his exceptional artistic talent and vision. He facilitated the placement of the eagle statue in front of the Carmody Center and the statue of St. Ignatius Loyola in the Fr. Novotny Courtyard. His most significant artistic contribution was the Eagles Fly High bas relief sculpture in the Carmody Center lobby that captures the mind and heart of the whole of a Jesuit education experience on Eye Street. His art and his example of loyalty to Gonzaga will serve to inspire all who love the school. Mrs. Marty Tuohey, a mother of three Gonzaga alumni, has spent most of her life serving others. During high school and college, she spent time volunteering at an inner-city social service center in Rochester, New York; chairing a Social Action Committee; and establishing a ‘Big and Little Sister’ program. After getting married, she and her husband, Mark, made several moves around the country during which she provided counseling services, worked with children in foster care, and worked with people battling substance abuse problems. Over the years, she has volunteered with other organizations and also devoted countless hours to Gonzaga. Mrs. Tuohey has shown by her example the importance of providing care and compassion for every individual in the Ignatian tradition that is defined as ‘love showing itself in deeds rather than words.’ Gonzaga l Spring 2015

Eye Street Renewal Project Aims for July Finish
A
s winter gives way to spring, the Eye Street Renewal Project continues apace at Gonzaga. The project is on schedule for completion in July and what was once only a vision is quickly becoming a reality. The parking garage and the surface that will support the new Buchanan Field are in place. Workers are busy erecting stadium portals, the Alumni Pavilion, and the Buchanan Field gateway.
The main construction crane was dismantled in late February, marking the end of the “heavy lifting” phase of the project. In March, crews began the transformation of the Eye Street Pavilion in front of Dooley Hall and Sheehy Theater. As seen in these images, Eye Street will soon be transformed and better able to serve generations of Eagles to come.

E
ach year the Gonzaga Development Office staff does its best to reflect the loyalty and kindness of the school’s many generous benefactors. However, mistakes occasionally happen, as was the case with the 2014 edition of the Honor Roll of Donors. An unfortunate error resulting from a data glitch caused several parent donor names to be omitted from the 2014 Honor Roll. Steps have been taken to correct the error and the omitted names are printed here. The Gonzaga Development Office offers its heartfelt apology for the errors and its deep gratitude for your continued support of Gonzaga’s mission. W.C.A.C. Champions! The Gonzaga varsity basketball team won the 2015 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship on February 26th in a thrilling double-overtime game against DeMatha Catholic High School. The Eagles were led by Bryant Crawford ’15 (Gatorade D.C. Player of the Year and First Team All-WCAC selection), Sam Miller ’15 (First Team All-WCAC), and Chris Lykes ’17 (First Team All-WCAC). This is the second WCAC title for Head Coach Steve Turner, who also notched his 250th career victory during the 2014-2015 season. Congratulations, Eagles!
