President’s Message Dear Friends of Gonzaga, I am extremely proud of the fact that Gonzaga provides an exceptionally wellrounded experience for each and every one of our students. This issue of The Good News from 19 Eye Street highlights many of the extra-curricular activities in which our boys participate.

“God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen, my pick, my paintbrush, my needle – and my heart and my thoughts.”

Our athletic programs are among our most popular extra-curricular offerings, and that popularity has translated into remarkable success on the field of play. As you will see in the pages that follow, this past spring our boys won hard-earned championships in numerous sports at the local, regional, and even national levels. But you will also read about some of the ways in which our coaches and studentathletes are using athletics as a vehicle to learn about and serve the community around them. The baseball and hockey teams profiled in this issue demonstrate the ways in which sports are a full extension of our mission to create young men who discern God’s presence in everyday things, and who put that knowledge into action. We are also highlighting the exceptional artistic work of our students who took part in the ‘Spirit of Gonzaga’ photo contest, as well as the spring musical “Hairspray.” These are just a sampling of Gonzaga’s commitment to the arts and the ways in which our boys hone their talents in the studio, on stage, and on the canvas. I am very proud of them and the dedicated staff who lead our visual, musical, and performing arts programs. They are second to none. Taken together, these are more than just a diverse array of activities. They enrich our efforts to create young men who are intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. As the Jesuit philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote, “God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen, my pick, my paintbrush, my needle – and my heart and my thoughts.” More than the victories, curtain calls, and artistic awards, it is the ability to “find God in all things” that sets a Gonzaga man apart. Thank you for all of the ways in which you support our efforts to carry on God’s extraordinary work here on Eye Street. May God bless you and your families!

Sincerely,

Rev. Stephen W. Planning, SJ President

Hairspray! T

he Gonzaga Dramatic Association staged a rousing production of Hairspray last spring with a cast and crew of more than 120 students from Gonzaga and ten other schools, innovative set pieces, special LED lighting, and a wireless sound system. The show was a spectacle of incredible voices and dancing and was a fitting sendoff for senior class members who truly excelled during their four years in Sheehy Theater. Crowds were dazzled by the talent and walked away enthralled and confident that the GDA, which lost its icon when Dr. John Warman ’57 passed away at the beginning of the school year, is still producing shows that would bring an emphatic smile to Doc and the many fans of Gonzaga theater.

Gonzaga Athletes Benefit On and Off the Field From Dynamic Service Partnerships Nearly every day of the school year during their respective seasons, the Gonzaga baseball and hockey teams head off campus, cross the Anacostia River, and arrive

at neighboring athletic facilities just off Minnesota Avenue in Southeast Washington. For the baseball team, its home field is the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, a state-of-the-art facility built by the Nationals in partnership with Major League Baseball and the City of

12

Gonzaga l summer 2016

Washington. For the hockey team, home ice is the Fort Dupont Ice Arena right next door – the oldest enclosed ice rink in DC and the former practice home of the NHL’s Washington Capitals. At first glance, the two facilities might seem out of place. Both are located in the heart of DC’s Fort Dupont neighborhood, adjacent to the Stoddert Terrace neighborhood – a DC Housing Authority property that has struggled with elevated levels of violent crime and not necessarily where one might think to locate a baseball facility or ice skating rink. But the operators of both facilities see their location as a core part of their identity, and serving the local community – especially kids – as a core part of their mission. And in the Gonzaga hockey and baseball teams, they’ve found willing partners. The boys of these teams are closely involved in working with the youngsters whom both the Academy and the Arena serve and, in the process, are gaining skills and experiences that help them develop both on and off the field. BASEBALL: SUPPORTING

SCHOLAR-ATHLETES The Nats Academy was built with one explicit purpose in mind: to use the sports of baseball and softball as vehicles to foster positive character development, academic achievement, and improved health among youth from underserved communities in Washington, D.C. The Nationals ownership and city leaders were invested in the idea and built the gleaming facility where hundreds of third-throughsixth-graders from DC’s Wards 7 and 8 now spend more than 250 days a year – after school and during the summer – participating in the Academy’s academic, health, and wellness programs. But the Academy also needed active, committed, community partners and volunteers to serve as mentors and tutors to the boys and girls it serves (known as “Scholar-Athletes”). “Gonzaga baseball has been the model partner,” says Tal Alter, Executive Director of the Academy. “Frankly, we don’t need teams who just want to use our fields; there are plenty of those. We need partners who buy into our model of social change, who invest themselves in working directly with our Scholar-Athletes and develop meaningful relationships with them. The young gonzaga.org

men of Gonzaga have embraced that idea from day one.” The players work in small group sessions or one-on-one with the boys and girls enrolled at the Academy. Some days they support the Academy Coaches in running coaching sessions or drills; they may tutor or assist with homework; or they may just spend time hanging out and talking with the kids. “Our program is built on the premise that our volunteers need to be present for our Scholar-Athletes on a weekly basis, if not more. In order to support them in the ways we set out to do, you can’t just drop in for a day of service and expect them to respond,” says Chris Reed, Director of Programs. “The guys on the Gonzaga baseball team have developed relationships with the kids that are meaningful, and the support they give them is impactful, in large part because they’re such a constant presence at the Academy. They’ve become part of the fabric of the Nats Academy community.” HOCKEY: STUDY BUDDIES The Gonzaga hockey teams are similarly invested in the city’s youngsters through the “Study Buddies” program. Started in 2012 by former Gonzaga hockey parent Deana Hally and her son Bobby ’14, this weekly mentoring and tutoring program partners players from all three Gonzaga hockey teams with students from gonzaga.org

Cornerstone School in Southeast Washington. Every Monday afternoon during hockey season at Fort Dupont Ice Arena, students from Gonzaga and Cornerstone, which serves children in grades K-12, spend time completing homework assignments, playing games, snacking together, and simply learning more about each other in a fun and lighthearted environment. “From the beginning, our goal

for the program was for it to be more than just a ‘tutoring’ program. We really emphasized mentorship. Looking back on it, the program organically developed the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis. It’s geared towards the teaching and mentoring of the whole

person. We really got to know these kids,” says Bobby. “I think that the Gonzaga Hockey team acts as role models and mentors to the Cornerstone students. Some of them have been coming back for all four years because they enjoy the program and our guys so much.” In a 2013 Washington Post article, he explained that he hoped the creation and success of Study Buddies would be the team’s legacy. In addition to the team’s success on the ice, which included consecutive league championships in 2013 and 2014 and the only undefeated season in Gonzaga hockey history, Bobby also says, “I think if you asked the guys in my class who were a part of Study Buddies, they would all say that they treasure the experience of Study Buddies more than the rings.” TEAM IMPACT To hear it from their coaches, the boys of Gonzaga receive far more than they give as a result of these partnerships – and much of that pays off on the field and the ice. “Some of the benefits of service are obvious,” says Bill Slater, head coach of the Gonzaga hockey team. “Our guys gain perspective, they see beyond themselves, they see there’s a lot more to the world around them than just school and hockey. But some of the benefits go straight to the ice. I’m convinced they’re better teammates and more selfless players as a result of their involvement with the kids in Study Buddies.” Gonzaga head baseball coach Andy Bradley ’00 echoes that sentiment. “I see it all the time – guys who became more coachable, more team-oriented as a result of what they’re involved in at the Academy. They’re becoming better, more grounded people, and better ballplayers as the same time. That’s what I’d call a win-win.” ■

our longtime Gonzaga staff members – Mr. Tom Baker, Mrs. Courtney Joncas, Fr. Ken Meehan, SJ, and Mr. Rob Theriaque – retired at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year after a combined 101 years of service to the school. Mr. Baker (second from right) joined the Fine Arts Department faculty in 1983. He taught thousands of freshmen and sophomores Basic Art and guided hundreds of juniors and seniors in Independent Art tutorials, art competitions, and other programs. Asked in a recent Aquilian interview what he would miss about Gonzaga, Mr. Baker responded, “The relationships with the students and how they develop over four years – it is inspiring to see how a student grows as an artist over that period of time.” Mrs. Courtney Joncas (right), a former Gonzaga parent (’88, ’91, ’98), served as the Assistant Admissions Director for 27 years and saw thousands of boys come through Gonzaga’s doors. She echoed Mr. Baker’s comments, saying in an article for The Aquilian, “What’s special about Gonzaga is the relationships between the adults and the students.” Fr. Ken Meehan, SJ, arrived on Eye Street in 1992 and taught Latin in the Classics Department and Film Study in the Fine Arts Department. He also spent many years as the moderator of Gonzaga’s “It’s Academic!” quiz bowl team, guiding it to success in many local, regional, and national competitions. He and the late Dr. John Warman ’57 kept the strong tradition of studying the Classics going at Gonzaga. “It’s been a great run. My blessings and best wishes as you strive to maintain the Ignatian spirit,” Fr. Meehan said in a farewell note to faculty and staff. Mr. Rob Theriaque came to Gonzaga in 1999 and joined the Science Department faculty as a physics and chemistry teacher. He filled other roles, as well, including conference-winning golf coach and stage crew moderator for the Gonzaga Dramatics Association, which earned him induction into the school’s Theater Hall of Fame in 2014. “It is the spirit and warmth of this community that I will carry with me in my heart forever,” Mr. Theriaque said. “The Gonzaga community is tremendously grateful to Tom, Courtney, Ken, and Rob for their dedication to the school and, especially, the young men of Eye Street. Although we are sad to see them go, we wish them the very best as they move on to new adventures in their lives,” said Gonzaga President Rev. Stephen Planning, SJ.

Two Board Members Complete Terms in 2016 Mr. Dan Knise and Mr. Kevin Reed ’66 completed their service as members of the Gonzaga Board of Directors this year, each having served three consecutive three-year terms. Mr. Knise, outgoing Chairman and father of Matthew ’06, Patrick ’07, and Nicholas ’11, focused much of his time on the Board shepherding the major real estate interests of the school, as well as working to secure practice and playing fields for athletic teams. Mr. Reed, father of Daniel ’92, Andrew ’94, Brendan ’99, and Stephen ’04, was a member of the Board’s Audit and Education Committees and also compiled a book of the writings of the late Gonzaga President Fr. Allen P. Novotny, SJ, titled Eye Street Homilies, Prayers, and Reflections 1994-2010.
