A Note from the Director
Welcome to the Gonzaga Dramatic Association’s spring production of Into the Woods! It has been incredibly special to create this show on our stage over the past eight weeks. Not only to pay our own small tribute to the life and legacy of Stephen Sondheim, but also to have you, our audience, see a fully produced GDA musical on stage for the first time in three years! You also have the unique opportunity to see two different casts perform their own distinct interpretations of this beloved show. Into the Woods blends many of our cherished fairytale stories together. But, these are not the Disney versions we have come to know and love. When the Brothers Grimm first published their “Children’s Tale” in the early 19th century, the stories were criticized for not being suitable for children. The instances of murder, mutiliation, deceit, and greed you are about to see support such a claim. Yet even when life seems full of insurmountable challenges, there is always a glimmer of light that gives us hope even in the darkest of times. When I first directed this show four years ago, I took a much more cynical approach to the story, warning “there are no ‘happily ever afters’ here.” However, after living through the many challenges we have faced over the past two years, I find myself drawn to the hopeful messages in this show and taking comfort in those glimmers of light. These casts and crew have been such strong rays of light for me, as I hope they will be for you. It has been my pleasure to work with their exceptional talent, as they bring these characters and woods to life! We invite you to come “into the woods” to listen, to learn, and maybe to make a wish of your own. Careful, though -- wishes come true, not free. Ms. Kate Griffith Director, Into the Woods

Mrs. Denise Aitchison (Costumer) Denise Aitchison is happy to be celebrating her sixth year as a Costume Co-Coordinator and Designer. She managed to fly under the radar of the GDA until her son, Quinn (‘17), decided to be in the musical Curtains his senior year. After 30 years working in regional theater, she is currently freelancing as a Costume Coordinator and Draper for companies including Ford’s Theatre, The Washington Revels, Goodman Theatre, and Arena Stage. Denise gives her special thanks to husband Jon, who cleans the house and cooks for three months which enables her to work with teenagers, cultivating them into theater goers and professionals. She gives her thanks to Paul, Meghan, Kate, Sarah, Bev, Sophia, and Kimberly, who likes to put too many rhinestones on the costumes. (Just kidding, there can never be too many rhinestones!) Mr. Andrew Bevilacqua (Stage Crew Moderator) is happy to be involved in his third show at Gonzaga. A member of Gonzaga’s English Department, Mr. Bev’s showbiz claim to fame is that he was once an extra in an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, although unfortunately his scene was cut. While in high school at St. Joe’s Prep in Philadelphia, Mr. Bev was a member of the production staff of the Cape and Sword Drama Society. As a stage manager, he was involved in several shows, with some cameos on stage and small roles in alumni productions. He’s grateful to everyone involved in the GDA and Gonzaga for being so wonderful and welcoming! Mr. Paul Buckley ‘86, HoF ‘16 (Producer/GDA Moderator) is completing his 24th year of running the Gonzaga Dramatic Association. He is extremely grateful to his amazing production team of Meghan, Kate, Sarah, Marika, Sophia, Bev, Kim and Denise. He thanks the seniors for sticking with it in this challenging year and to all the kids for wearing their masks so diligently. Thanks to the hard work of the kids in the cast and crew, we are fully back and it’s great to be able to say that. Lastly, he thanks his wife Monica, and kids Anthony ‘23 (stage crew), Caroline and Gabe for supporting him in his work and for helping to share in the joy of the GDA. Mrs. Meghan Goldsmith, HoF ‘18 (Producer) is finishing out her 21st season as a member of the GDA production staff. It’s fantastic to get to see the students performing in person again, and she’s so proud of how much they’ve accomplished in such a short period of time and with such a steep learning curve. Thank you to Paul, Sarah, Kate, Sophia, Bev, Kim & Denise for being wonderful colleagues, creators and friends. Love and thanks to her amazing husband Dan, and to Matt, Katie and Emmy for sharing Mommy with the big kids. Ms. Kate Griffith (Director) is delighted to be donning the shoes, or perhaps slippers, of GDA Director this semester. This is her third show with the GDA. She has a Masters in Theatre Education and has been directing, producing, and teaching drama for the past decade. She is also a long-time comedic improvisor, a more recent tap dancer, and teaches geometry at Gonzaga. Notable previous directing credits include: Matilda The Musical, Into the Woods, The Sound of Music, The 25th…Spelling Bee and Death. Mr. James Lapine (Book) is a playwright and director. On Broadway he has worked with Stephen Sondheim on Sunday in the Park with George; Into the Woods; and Passion. He also conceived and directed the musical review Sondheim on Sondheim. With William Finn he created Falsettos recently revived by Lincoln Center Theater; Little Miss Sunshine; Muscle; and directed Finn’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Other Broadway credits include his play based on Moss Hart’s memoir Act One (also LCT), Amour, The Diary of Anne Frank, Golden Child, and Dirty Blonde. He has written the plays Table Settings, Twelve Dreams, The Moment When, Fran’s Bed and Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing. Lapine has been nominated for eleven Tony Awards, winning on three occasions. He has also been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, SDC’s Mr. Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater, and inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.
Ms. Sophia Menconi (Technical Director) is thrilled to be leading the stage crew for her third show at Gonzaga, and first as Technical Director. Outside of GDA, she works in Gonzaga’s Counseling Offices and is the Education Coordinator at Spooky Action Theater. She would like to thank her cat. Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting theatres from around the world the rights to perform the greatest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond. Founded in 1952 by composer Frank Loesser and orchestrator Don Walker, MTI is a driving force in advancing musical theatre as a vibrant and engaging art form. MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 70,000 professional, community and school theatres in the US and in over 60 countries worldwide. MTI is particularly dedicated to educational theatre, and has created special collections to meet the needs of various types of performers and audiences. MTI’s Broadway Junior™ shows are 30- and 60-minute musicals for performance by elementary and middle school-aged performers, while MTI’s School Editions are musicals annotated for performance by high school students. Mrs. Kimberly Notarianni (Costumer) is in her 6th season as a costumer for the GDA and is thrilled to be part of the production staff since 2019. Mom of Spencer (’17) and Maddie Rose (SR ’19) she has been costuming the GDA since Mr. Buckley roped her in immediately after chairing Gonzaga’s 35th Anniversary Gala in December of 2016. “Mrs. Noti” has one cardinal rule: Thou shall NOT eat in costume and always has a secret candy stash in the “cage”. Special shout outs to: Dr. Noti for his patience with late theatre nights, hot glue guns, and musical theatre playlists, & to Mrs. A, my partner in crime, who happily indulges my sequin & rhinestone addiction. Mr. Stephen Sondheim (Music & Lyrics) wrote the music and lyrics for Saturday Night (1954), A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (1962), ANYONE CAN WHISTLE (1964), COMPANY (1970), FOLLIES (1971), A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1973), THE FROGS (1974), PACIFIC OVERTURES (1976), SWEENEY TODD (1979), MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (1981), SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (1984), INTO THE WOODS (1987), ASSASSINS (1991), PASSION (1994) and ROAD SHOW (2008) as well as lyrics for WEST SIDE STORY (1957), GYPSY (1959) and DO I HEAR A WALTZ? (1965) and additional lyrics for CANDIDE (1973). Anthologies of his work include SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM (1976), MARRY ME A LITTLE (1981), YOU’RE GONNA LOVE TOMORROW (1983), PUTTING IT TOGETHER (1993/99) and SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM (2010). He composed the scores of the films “Stavisky” (1974) and “Reds” (1981) and songs for “Dick Tracy” (1990) and the television production “Evening Primrose” (1966). His collected lyrics with attendant essays have been published in two volumes: “Finishing the Hat” (2010) and “Look, I Made A Hat” (2011). In 2010 Broadway’s Henry Miller’s Theatre was renamed The Stephen Sondheim Theatre in his honour; in 2019, London’s Queens Theatre was also renamed the Sondheim. Ms. Sarah Frances Hope Williams (Choreographer) is in her 8th year with the GDA. Sarah Frances is an actor, choreographer and teacher artist in the DMV. She graduated from The Catholic University of America Department of Musical Theatre. Previous GDA shows are Beauty and the Beast, Grease, Footloose, Fiddler on the Roof, and Hairspray. Previous performing credits include Beauty and the Beast, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Saturday Night Fever, Urinetown, and more. Mary Ashleigh Berg (Florinda), also known as Mash, is saying her sorrowful goodbye to her 3rd and final musical on the GDA stage (excluding the virtual one, of course). Long live the batons, the Newsies corsets, the fateful email dropping out of SpongeBob, and her missing toe (L’Etoile, if you’re seeing this, I missed your Valentine’s Day roses!). Anthony Buckley (Assistant Sound Manager) is excited to be working on his sixth GDA production. With Chris Groh leaving, Anthony will soon be able to roam free among the audio cables. The aural age of Groh is over, the reign of Buckley has begun. Grayson Bullard (Baker’s Wife) is super hyped to be in the GDA! They want to thank their amazing friends they have made over the past few months. They also want to thank their amazing tortoise, Iroh (follow on insta @iroh_the_tortoise). He would like to thank Mr. Buckley, Sarah, Marika, Ms. Griffith, Mr. Bev and all the cast and crew for all they do. Enjoy the show! This is something like John Corso’s (Stage Crew) fifth production with the GDA. He was an editor/producer for virtual productions, broadcast manager for the Bicentennial Celebration, and is now a set builder. He loves leading the crew in the build. He apologizes for his fellow stage crew members’ bios. Chris Cullen (Cinderella’s Father): “People I’ve been compared to during this performance: John Mulany, Fozzie the Bear, Peter Parker, Bling Bling Boy, Antman (booooo), Buford from Phineas and Ferb, and Elf on the Shelf. I’m conflicted.” Ebou “Abe” Dibba (Cinderella’s Father) has been in every GDA show since freshman year (besides two). Ebou has felt so fortunate to be part of such an amazing experience and will forever hold these memories in his heart. This is Dakota Dorsey’s (Little Red Ridinghood) first in-person show at Gonzaga and she’s excited to share an incredible production created by a cast of outstanding actors and new friends! Shoutout to her twin brother Gabriel for being an awesome Hermano and Grayson for driving her to rehearsal every day. Gabriel Dorsey (Rapunzel’s Prince) is excited to be doing his fifth show in the Sheehy Theater. He, as well as everyone in the GDA, is immensely grateful to Sarah, Ms. Menconi and Ms. Griffith for putting so much time and effort into this show. Thank you! Matthew Dukes (Lights Manager) is proud to be working on his 8th and final production in the GDA. He wants to thank the managers for attempting to create a funny bio with him for a couple hours. Clearly they were unsuccessful. Thanks to everyone for the memorable four years! Adele Feldberg (Rapunzel), a senior at Stone Ridge, is thrilled to go Into the Woods for her 2nd GDA production. She would like to thank her family and friends, and shoutout Grayson Bullard and Dakota Dorsey for being the loudest carpool on the road! She is so grateful for all the amazing friends she has made, fake food she has stolen, and fun she has had this spring! Christopher Groh (Stage Crew) is a senior working on his 7th and final show at Gonzaga. He would like to thank sound gremlin Anthony Buckley for being better at his job than he is and congratulate the gremlin for finally ascending to the throne. JP Howard (Jack) is very excited for people to see the show and would like to thank the cast and crew for their hard work. Daniel Huisentruit (Stage Crew) is fairly new to stage crew, but he’s had himself a good time so far. Joining in October, he’s since met many new people and learned a lot. He’s probably thinking “I hope the show goes well, but it’d be silly to see something go wrong.” Patrick Jacobs (Loft Manager) is proud to be working on his sixth production with the GDA. Patrick wants to remind you that if a curtain drops or the set falls apart during the show, it is not his fault. He also wants to let you know that he did not tear the grand curtain. John Jerro (Narrator) is the Narrator of the Wish cast and two year member of the GDA. He has performed a monologue from The Odd Couple, the role of a mob fish in SpongeBob: The Musical, and the role of Randy in Almost, Maine. In the Bleak Midwinter.
Katie Kerns (Cinderella) is excited to be participating in her 4th and final show in the GDA. She is proud of what she has done and the friendships she has made along the way. Catherine Mahr (Jack’s Mother) is a senior at Georgetown Visitation in her fourth and final GDA show. “Always and forever, the Visi freshman. I love you family, chivalry, and pookies! Thanks, GDA for the past four years!” William Malley (Scene Shop Foreman) is the shop manager for the show. He runs the shop and helps build the sets. His goal is to help orient the freshmen on how to build, prepare and to get them ready to assume the responsibilities of being a leader in the GDA. Liliana McGee (Stepmother) is a senior at Elizabeth Seton High School. This is Liliana’s second and regretfully last GDA production. She’d like to thank the staff, the cast, and crew for a wonderful experience. Molly McGee (Lucinda) is a sophomore at Georgetown Visitation and is so excited to be in her fifth show at Gonzaga. She also plays ice hockey at Visitation. She wants to thank her mom, brothers, and KK for always supporting her in everything she does. Brendan Seay (Stage Crew), a freshman, has already worked on two shows already and helped create the set. He enjoyed working the spotlights and making whoever needed to be the center of attention. He also helped on the Bicentennial and Almost, Maine and can’t wait for more.
Guy Shoji (Props Master) Serving size: 1 Guy Shoji. Not machine washable. Choking hazard. Keep out of reach of small children. Rated PG-13. Made using recycled materials. Slippery when wet. High voltage. Manufactured by Gonzaga. Best by 06/2022. Matthew Shumaker (Steward) is excited to finally channel his inner steward. It’s all he’s ever wanted to be ever since he was young.
