November 6, 2019 Dear Families and Friends of the GDA, We wish to thank the Gonzaga Dramatic Association for taking on the extraordinary challenge of presenting The Laramie Project. As you might know, the play tells the true story of the town of Laramie, Wyoming, trying to come to grips with the tragic murder of one of its own. At the age of 21 and while he was a student at the University of Wyoming, Matthew Shepherd was kidnapped, tortured, and left for dead because he was a gay man. While 20 years have passed since his murder, the play still serves as a powerful catalyst for communities and organizations to grapple with how we respond to those who are different from us. Whether the issue is sexuality, politics, religion, culture or race, in our pluralistic society we live side by side with people whose lives are sometimes radically different from our own. While we hope we can all agree that no one should ever be murdered for how they live their life, there are many other important questions that the play elicits about difference and tolerance, as well as religious and ethical beliefs. The play is not designed to give us answers. Rather, it is designed to begin conversations. And sometimes just having the conversation is the hardest part. This year, Gonzaga has chosen for its theme, “All In, Gonzaga’s Year of Inclusion.” The idea is that every person should feel a part of Gonzaga no matter how different we might be from one another. While there is one Gonzaga, there is not just one way to be a Gonzaga man. Our hope for the year and for this play is that they help us look honestly at our biases, prejudices, and preconceived notions about those who lead lives different from our own. Our hope is that together we might have those difficult conversations which lead to understanding and respect. This is at the heart of our Christian vocation. While we are not called to agree with everyone, we are called to love everyone - no exceptions. We wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to the GDA and to the many parents and family members who have committed tremendous time, energy, and resources to the success of this beautiful production. We hope and pray that this experience might help us all have the kinds of difficult conversations that result in every person on Eye Street feeling “All In.” May God bless you all. Sincerely,
Rev. Stephen W. Planning, SJ President
Mr. Thomas K. Every II Headmaster
A Note from the Director... In the introductory scene of The Laramie Project, the play’s author, Moisés Kaufman, and other members of the show’s cast, say they went to Wyoming “to listen to” the people of Laramie who had lived through the events surrounding the murder of Matthew Shephard. The result? Stories. The play’s characters tell us their stories, trying to be honest about the momentous things that happened to them in 1998 and 1999, and they tell us, in their own words, how those things affected them. No one tells us their story unless they want to share something about themselves with us. And that’s always a risky proposition. In telling their story, they make themselves vulnerable. We can respond to them in a couple of ways. We can, if we choose to, “listen for” arguments in their stories: we can seek out trigger words, or ideas we (don’t) like or (don’t) agree with. If we do any of that, we’ll certainly fortify our own defenses – we’ll position ourselves to prove a point, or justify an agenda, or show ourselves right, somehow. But the only stories we’ll hear will be the ones we want to tell ourselves about the story tellers. Or we can, if we choose to, do what Kaufman and his theater company did and “listen to” the stories of the people of Laramie. What will that mean? It won’t be comfortable, sometimes. Sometimes we’ll be moved or stunned or charmed or shocked or offended; if we do “listen to” the stories, we’re going to have to open ourselves up to the people telling them, return vulnerability for vulnerability. And only if we do that will we be able to hear them telling us about themselves. When we “listen to” someone tell us their story, someone recently said, we then are able to imagine what life is like for them. And imaging what life is like for Others (Others with a capital “O”) – and not what we think it’s like for them – is the first humble, awkward, maybe even dangerous step we have to take if we really want to become what the Jesuits call us to be: Men and Women for those Others. -- Mr. Allan L’Etoile ‘73

BioS Matthew Allen’s (Rob DeBree/Jeff Lockwood/Bailiff ) ecstatic to debut in the GDA! Thankful to all those involved, he’s thrilled to have been welcomed so warmly! Eleanor Bender (Trish Steger/Tiffany Edwards/Sherry Johnson/Jen) is overjoyed to be in her third GDA production! As a junior at St. John’s, Eleanor has received and continues to receive quite a bit of teasing! Luckily, she has officially converted and is now a proud Gonzaga Eagle! JUST KIDDING! Eleanor will forever bleed red (like a normal person) GO SJC! Anthony Buckley (Stage Crew) is excited to be in his second show at Gonzaga, his first when he was a dead body in Arsenic and Old Lace when he was 10. Anthony has also played the roles of Chip in Beauty and the Beast, the Rabbi in Fiddler on the Roof, Sketch in Hairspray!, as well as being in ensemble in Annie. He is also happy to be doing stage crew for the first time this year. Nathaniel Buckley (Shop Manager) is excited to be a part of this historic show in the GDA. He hopes that this production will be a great success and inspire generations new and old of the power that a community has. While he is the oldest in the GDA, Coleman Bunn (Matt Mickelson/Newscaster #4/ Reverend Fred Phelps/Philip Dubois) has the energy of a freshman. He is grateful for being able to put on this show with the best friends he can ask for. He hopes you can find peace and enjoy the show. Ben Campion (Matt Galloway) is a senior in his 5th show at Gonzaga. Despite his lack of experience bartending, he is grateful to be a part of such an important show for the Gonzaga community and hopes it sparks discussion among family and friends. Gennaro Cardarelli (Co-House Manager) is thrilled to return as House Manager for his seventh GDA production on the House Crew. Now that he has usurped power and been named Co-Caesar, along with his counterpart Paul Kiyonaga, he is ready to wield unfettered power over the House. He would like to thank Winston Leslie, Collin Dent, and Adam Sanin for their mentorship in the decorum of the House. Thomas Carney (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be a part of his 5th GDA production. Thomas would like to thank his family for supporting him. Thomas does not know what to write in his bio past thanking his parents, so he is going to fill the rest of his word limit with a quote from Macbeth, “What’s done cannot be undone.” Christopher Cowardin (Phil Labrie/Rulan Stacey) is overjoyed to be in his 7th show for the GDA his senior year. He can’t believe how fast his four years at Gonzaga has gone and wishes that he could do it over again....(he also can’t believe how bad his Pittsburgh Steelers are this year). He would like to thank everyone who has put their time and effort into this show and hopes you enjoy the it.
