Synopsis Ay me! For aught that I could ever read Could ever hear by tale or history, The course of true love never did run smooth. -- A Midsummer Night’s Dream, c. 1596 William Shakespeare “That’s the way, love is, baby.” -- “That’s the Way Love Is,” 1967 Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong Our play opens in the ancient Athenian court – but it could be any time, it could be anywhere – four days before the marriage of duke Theseus and the Amazonian Queen, Hippolyta. For their wedding, a contest is to be held, and the winning group will perform a play at the feast – and receive a lifetime annuity in return! But, before Theseus can even kiss Hippolyta under the light of the moon, Egeus, an officious Athenian noble, appears at court to insist that the duke compel Egeus’ daughter, Hermia, to marry a young man named Demetrius rather than her one true love, Lysander. Theseus offers Hermia a choice of his own, and almost no one is happy. Lysander and Hermia leave Athens to elope. Helena, a childhood friend of Hermia’s, alerts Demetrius to their flight – hoping Demetrius will be kind to her in return and the four young people head to the woods about Athens. Meanwhile, a group of working men gathers to plan their “entertainment” for Theseus’ feast, pinning their hopes on the bombastic Nick Bottom. The woods where the young people assemble is home tot he fairies, whose king (Oberon) and queen (Titania) are arguing over who will have the services of an orphaned Indian boy as their attendant.

Synopsis (cont’d) All is not well in fairy land, and Oberon, with the help of a mischievous sprite named Puck and a love juice, plans to trick Titania into giving him the attendant boy. Confusion ensues when Oberon, invisible to the mortals, overhears Demetrius speaking rudely to Helena. He tells Puck to put some of the love juice on the eyes of the sleeping Demetrius, so that he’ll fall in love with Helena, but by mistake, Puck anoints Lysander’s eyes. After Oberon scolds him, he anoints Demetrius, but the two love-struck young men pursue love and fight while the girls argue and flee, all in increasingly delightful confusion. Meanwhile, Oberon places the juice on Titania’s eyes as she sleeps, and when she wakes, the first thing she sees -- is Bottom. The mechanical had been rehearsing his play in the fairy woods with his friends when mischievous Puck placed on his head the “knoll” of an ass. Thus, Titania falls in love with a monster. In this state, Oberon gets her to give him the orphan boy; only then does he release her from the love spell and reconcile with her. With the lovers’ relations sorted out and the fairy kingdom at peace, Bottom resumes his Bottom-hood and swears to have his friend Peter Quince write a tell-all book about his “dream.” Finally, the night of the Theseus-Hippolyta wedding arrives, and the duke decides the revelers will see the mechanicals version of the tragic story of Pyramus and Thisby. The performance is “awfully” good, and Bottom and his friends rewarded for the work. The newly married retire, and the fairies, led by their reunited king and queen, gather in the court to bless the “house” and all in it. And almost EVERYONE is happy.

This is his first performance with the GDA. He wants to thank his parents and his fellow freshmen in stage crew. This is Patrick Armstrong’s (Stage Crew) first Gonzaga stage production. KC has been acting since the fourth grade and has participated in several plays including Aladdin, Jr. (Aladdin & Razoul), Willie Wonka (Willie), and Annie (Mr. Warbucks). Lari Bittman (Stage Crew) is a junior at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. This is her second production with the GDA. Lari helped stage crew last year with the spring musical Annie especially with all their intense backdrops. She is so overjoyed to be part of MSND and be with such a great crew and cast. <3 :) Toddles MacNoodles. :P Joe Boston (Philostrate), a Gonzaga freshman, is excited to be in his first GDA production. He thanks Mr. L’Etoile and Mrs. Lodato for giving him the chance to debut on the Gonzaga stage. Lizzie Connolly (Forest Denizen) is a freshman at Visitation and is super excited to be in her first GDA production. Thanks for everything, John!

Peter Curtin (Puck) is thrilled to be in his sixth show with GDA. He would like to thank his parents, the production staff, the crew, and his amazing friends in the cast, especially Pat and the Peruvian Panther. Corey Davis (Stage Crew) has been in the GDA for about a year now. He has been in three plays now and was the person responsible for the nuclear reactor that now powers the theater in response to the power problems in Annie. Also Corey would like to thank his crew for the laser burns from the saw and the fatigue he now has from baking so much. Sasha Davis (Cobweb) is a junior at School Without Walls and is enjoying her first Gonzaga theater experience. Her favorite past roles include: Patty Simcox (Grease); Ariel (The Tempest); and Stubb (Moby Dick the Musical). Abbey Doherty (Moth) is a sophomore at Visitation and ecstatic to be in her second show at Gonzaga. She first appeared in Annie as a Hoovervillian, and loves Gonzaga Drama so much! Thanks to Mom, Dad, Patrick and Brynn for love, to her visi girls for life, and Mr. L, Mr. B, Meghan and Mrs. Lodato for everything! Michael Douglas (Stage Crew) is a sophomore on the stage crew in his 3rd play with the Gonzaga Dramatic Association. He has previously been on the stage crew in both The Front Page and Annie. Wilson Duggan (Robert Starveling) is playing the role of Starveling as the intoxicated quadriplegic robot-tailor that Shakespeare always envisioned the role to be. He would like to thank Patrick Fleury, Mariah Rollins, Clare Duncan, Ryan O’Toole, and Nick Pugliese for being tremendous sources of artistic inspiration; they mean the World. He would also like to thank Messrs L & S and Mrs. L for their vision and dedication. This is Clare Duncan’s (Titania) third show with Gonzaga and her last year. She would like to thank the directors, producers, crew, and cast along with all her family and friends. She would like to thank Mr. L’Etoile for putting up with all her complaining even though she is often right in the end. Special thanks to her mother for listening to her complain about complaining to Mr. L. And fall shows are so much better.

Thank you.” Dennis Flynn (Nick Bottom) is a senior at Gonzaga participating in his first ever production and is startled to find out the play kids are not nearly as weird as he thought they would be. He would like to thank Mr. L’Etoile and Mrs. Lodato for their guidance, and his mom, his dad, his cousin Timmy, the rest of his family, and most of his friends for support. Timothy Flynn (Francis Flute) is honored to perform in his fourth Gonzaga play. He is also happy that the upperclassmen have stopped calling him a freshman, although they will always think of him as one. Garrett Hanrahan (Forest Denizen) is a Gonzaga freshman. His first theatrical role was as Hamlet in his 8th grade’s production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet: Prince of Denmark. Ryan Jenks (Stage Crew) is a senior in his first Gonzaga play. He works the stage like a pro. He was quoted saying, “This has been the bes’ semesta EVA!” as a single tear rolled down his right eye. He loves the “crew” and wishes everyone the best, esp. She would also like to thank Cami for comforting her through the tree tragedy. This is Kevin “King Lech” Leahy’s (Peter Quince) fifth GDA production (YCTIWY, G&D, TFP, Annie).
