Producer’s Notes
Back in December, when we were trying to find the right show to do, a lot of ideas were put out there. We knew it had to be a virtual show - there was no way health guidelines would allow us to do a show like we normally would. At the same time, as successful as our collection of scenes was from the fall, we didn’t want to do the same in the spring, we wanted to do a musical, no matter how challenging that may prove to be. Fortunately, both Sarah and Marika had gained some experience in virtual productions over the course of the past year so they had an idea of what it would take, and Jonathan Spencer had learned a lot from the fall and felt ready to take on this new challenge. Still, we needed a show. The right show. And then fortune smiled upon us. One of the first shows bandied about was The SpongeBob Musical. The show had literally just been made available for high schools to do the day before we had met, and both Sarah and Marika were incredibly excited at the possibility. Now I had never watched the show - it came into pop culture well after I left childhood, and my own kids were never really into it. Still, Sarah and Marika’s energy was contagious, so I was on board. There was one problem, the show, while recently made available for schools to do, was only made available to do LIVE, not virtually. This was a problem because we simply could not do that. And then fortune smiled again. We did some digging and found the name Kyle Jarrow - Kyle was the writer of the show. We made an appeal to him to talk to the company that held the rights to let us do it virtually, explaining how we really wanted to do the show but we couldn’t do it live for safety reasons. Amazingly enough, and to his credit, Kyle went to bat for us and went to the rights holding company, who then talked to Nickelodeon, and soon the rule was changed, and schools could now do it virtually - we had our show!! Of course now we had to put it together, and that’s where Sarah, Marika and Jonathan really showed their immense talent. I have never seen a show with such challenges and seen three people rise to that challenge so well. We had all sorts of issues along the way, the likes of which I had never encountered in almost 30 years of doing shows. But they met them every time, and so we are ready to bring this to you. And I couldn’t be more excited. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention some new blood that joined our ranks this year - Kate Griffith came over from Holy Cross and has proven to be instrumental and looks ready to be a guiding voice for us for years to come.
Andrew Bevilacqua brought his experience from the stories Cape and Sword Society of St Joe’s Prep in Philly to keep us excited and upbeat. Ciaran Freeman pitched in with technical help for Jonathan. And Kim and Denise (Mrs NoT and Mrs A) once again gave us the best dressed show in the land - I am so thrilled to have them both aboard. But of course the real credit has to go to the kids - never has a class been presented with such challenges, and there were frustrations beyond frustrations along the way. Knowing they couldn’t rehearse in person. trying to create the sense of community and memories they had grown accustomed to, knowing that they could only do so much. Not being able to build actual sets, being relegated to creating virtual ones. All of these factors can play on the patience and endurance of kids, but they persevered and shone through it all, and so we are now ready to give you the story of Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy, Squdward, and all of these characters I barely knew before, but rejoice in now. I hope you will rejoice in them as well. Enjoy the show. Paul Buckley
Director’s Notes
Hello and welcome to our beautiful town of Bikini Bottom! Over the last three months, these incredible students have been working together (from far apart) to bring these familiar characters alive. They are telling an honest story of community and coming together in time of need. There is no better time to tell this story than now. We have been able to really tap into the full virtual production. This is a world that is so well known in 2D. The students have succeeded in expanding that world into their homes. This production has stretched each and everyone of us in new and exciting ways. The actors have learned about acting for the camera, creating their own studio space, recording their own audio, and connecting to each other through little squares. The crew has been challenged to adapt to the ways of technology, learning to create a scene through color and concept. I am beyond proud of each student who has had a hand in this production. Thank you to all of the parents who have welcomed the GDA into your homes. Thank you to the incredible production team for helping to create a fun and creative show. Thank you to the GDA students for coming together for the Best Day Ever! For mom and dad always. Sarah Frances Hope Williams Director, GDA

ProDUction staff Bios Mrs. Denise Aitchison (Costumer) is happy to be celebrating her fifth year as a Costume Co-Coordinator and Designer. She managed to fly under the radar of the GDA until her son, Quinn (‘17), decided to be in the musical Curtains his senior year. In the real world, she is in her 31st year as a Costume Draper for the Shakespeare Theatre Company. She also freelances regularly for many companies including Arena Stage, Washington National Opera, Ford’s Theatre, Olney Theatre, Signature Theatre, and the Guthrie Theater. Denise gives her special thanks to husband Jon, who cleans the house and cooks for three months. This enables her to work with teenagers and hopefully cultivate them into theater goers and professionals. She gives her thanks to Paul, Meghan, Sarah, Jonathan, and Kimberly, who likes to put too many rhinestones on the costumes. (Just kidding, there can never be too many rhinestones!) Mr. Andrew Bevilacqua (Production Assistant) is happy to be involved in his first show at Gonzaga. A new member of Gonzaga’s English Department, Mr. Bev’s showbiz claim to fame is that he was once an extra in an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, although unfortunately his scene was cut. While in high school at St. Joe’s Prep in Philadelphia, Mr. Bev was a member of the production staff of the Cape and Sword Drama Society. As a stage manager, he was involved in several shows, with some cameos on stage and small roles in alumni productions. He’s grateful to everyone involved in the GDA and Gonzaga for being so wonderful and welcoming! Mr. Paul Buckley ‘86, HoF ‘16 (Producer) is finishing his 23rd year of running the Gonzaga Dramatic Association, and he won’t long forget it. He is gratefult o his amazing production team of Meghan, Sarah, Jonathan and Marika, and welcomes Kate and Bev to the mix. He thanks Kim and Denise for making everyone look sharp and doing it with flair. He thanks the kids for their patience and understanding in pulling this off, and especially the seniors for not giving up on this idea of a streamed show. Lastly, he thanks his wife Monica, and kids Anthony (stage crew), Caroline and Gabe for being there for him, both in person and virtually. Remember, we always have tomorrow. Ms. Marika Countouris (Music Director) has been with the GDA for 6 years! Her previous GDA credits Grease, Beauty & the Beast, Curtains, Peter and the Star Catcher, Hairspray and Godspell. Other credits include Monumental: Be More Chill, Daddy Long Legs, Brooklyn and Montgomery. Flying V: We’re Gonna Die (Helen Hayes Nomination for Outstanding Music Direction); NextStop: Beehive; Levine Music Theatre: Matilda; Constellation: Little Shop of Horrors, Aida; Redhouse Theatre: Peter and the Starcatcher; Catholic University: 9 to 5; Montgomery College: Urinetown and Mr. Burns: A Post Electric Play; MC Summer Dinner Theater: Sister Act, Into the Woods, and Catch Me If You Can; Woodrow Wilson High School: Legally Blonde. Marika also serves as the Choral Arts Director at Georgetown Visitation, where she teaches private voice and leads both the Chorus and Madrigals.
Mrs. Meghan Goldsmith, HoF ‘18 (Producer) is in her 20th season as a member of the production staff and feels blessed by the opportunity to help bring the magic of theater to an audience, especially now. Memorable shows include Singin’ in the Rain ‘99, 42nd Street ‘02, Guys and Dolls ‘06, West Side Story ‘08, Kiss Me Kate ‘11, Fiddler ‘14. Thank you to Paul, Sarah, Jonathan and Marika for being wonderful colleagues, creators and friends, and welcome to Kate and Bev as they join our merry band of mayhem. Congratulations to the cast and crews, especially the seniors, on a job very well done. Love and thanks to her amazing husband Dan for his support and delicious dinners, and to Matt, Katie and Emmy for sharing Mommy with the big kids, and for only popping up in Zoom rehearsals every once in a while. Ms. Kate Griffith (Assistant Producer) is excited to be joining the GDA this semester for this unprecedented production. She has been directing, producing, and teaching drama for the past decade, and received her Master of Arts in Theatre Education from The Catholic University of America in May 2020. Notable previous directing credits include: Matilda The Musical, Into the Woods, The Sound of Music, The 25th…Spelling Bee and Death. In addition, she is a long-time comedic improvisor and a more recent tap dancer. She wants to thank Paul, Meghan, and Sarah for their immediate welcome and guidance. She is so proud of the hard work of this talented cast and crew, and hopes you enjoy the show! Mrs. Kimberly Notarianni (Costumer) is in her 5th season as a costumer for the GDA and is thrilled to be part of the production staff since 2019. Mom of Spencer (’17) and Maddie Rose (SR ’19) she has been costuming the GDA since Mr. Buckley roped her in immediately after chairing Gonzaga’s 35th Anniversary Gala in December of 2016. “Mrs. Noti” has one cardinal rule: Thou shall NOT eat in costume and always has a secret candy stash in the “cage”. Special shout outs to: Dr. Noti for his patience with late theatre nights, hot glue guns, and musical theatre playlists, & to Mrs. A, my partner in crime, who has spent many a late night by my side & happily indulges my sequin & rhinestone addiction. Mr. Jonathan Spencer (Technical Director) is a native of Fairfax, VA and a graduate of the Art Institute of Washington. He is in his fourth year as the GDA Technical Theatre Director after having worked as the Technical Theatre Director for Summit School in WinstonSalem, NC and as the co-owner/audio engineer of the live music venue Turntable in North Carolina. Despite the challenges that 2020 has presented, he has been impressed with not only the students’ resiliency and creativity, but also for truly embodying the phrase “the show must go on!” Ms. Sarah Frances Hope Williams (Director) is honored to be directing her first GDA musical. This is her 7th year with the GDA. Sarah Frances is an actor, choreographer and teacher artist in the DMV. She graduated from The Catholic University of America Department of Musical Theatre. Previous GDA shows are Beauty and the Beast, Grease, Footloose, Fiddler on the Roof, and Hairspray. Previous performing credits include Beauty and the Beast, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Saturday Night Fever, Urinetown, and more. Sarah Frances is the Education Program Manager for Levine Music Theatre at the Levine School of Music. For Mom and Dad always.
