The Gonzaga Alumni Association Proudly Presents
STU LONG ’60 April 26, 2008 Georgetown University
April 26, 2008
Dear Stu, Congratulations on another milestone—being the “honoree” of the first ever Gonzaga Alumni Association Roast. I must admit that when I initially heard from the committee about the idea of having a roast, I was skeptical for a number of reasons. “Didn’t we just have the annual bull roast in March?” I asked. No, the committee told me, this roast would not be about bull, it would be about Stu Long. That answer confused me even more, since I’ve always thought of the two together. Then they explained to me that it wasn’t that kind of bull. So I thought this roast must have to do with meat after all, and I thought of all that tough beef you’ve been serving up at the alumni Smoker each year. Then, when the committee finally got it through my thick Eastern European head that this Roast was the kind of occasion not primarily about food, I began to worry whether people would come to yet another Gonzaga event with all the other ones we have. But when they told me that the idea of this kind of roast is to subject someone publicly to humorous insults, praise, outlandish stories that may or may not be true, as well as some heart-warming tributes; that this someone is able to take the jokes in good fun and as not as serious criticism; that this someone would have the chance to give as good as he gets, and that this someone would be you, I knew that this was one roast that would not be half-baked. Let the roasting begin!
“Warmest” regards,
(Rev.) Allen P. Novotny, S.J.* President

Dear Friends, As Chairperson of the First Gonzaga Alumni Roast, it is my pleasure, privilege and honor to welcome all of you to this very special event. I express my deepest gratitude to all members of the Committee, the entire staff of the Gonzaga Development Office and the Gonzaga Alumni Association for all of their diligent efforts and support which will culminate in a most enjoyable evening of fun and tribute. The central purposes of this gala are to support the Great Church of St. Aloysius, the cornerstone of all that is Gonzaga College High School, and to recognize the contributions of Stu Long to all facets of the Gonzaga community. Stu is well known in the local restaurant, legal and construction communities as a result of many years of hard work in all of those arenas. He is also recognized as a significant part of the Congressional Country Club community as a result of his service as a Board Member and last year’s President. He is a most loyal son of Gonzaga and has been instrumental and at the center of nearly all that has been done outside of the classrooms at Gonzaga to improve it since the mid-1960s. His work on the Board, construction projects, Church renovations, the Annual Alumni Smoker, the Alumni Association, the Carmody Open, fundraising and all things Gonzaga have been tireless for decades. In a good-natured spirit of fun, Gonzaga tonight thanks Stu for all that he has done and has some laughs at his expense. But, beware, he has the privilege of rebuttal! A special note of thanks to Stu’s lovely wife, Cherie, who has worked tirelessly on this event and, most importantly, has ensured that he agreed to be roasted and will attend, and their children, Jessica and Jamey for their involvement. Lastly, my greatest thanks to you, Stu, for letting this happen. It has been an honor to chair this event and a greater honor to be called your friend. Sincerely yours, Tony Interdonato ’66

S t u a r t tuart James “Stu” Long was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Washington when he was just one year old. He is the fourth in a succession of eight siblings whose ages span twenty-five years. In 1955, at the age of thirteen, young Stu received his introduction to the restaurant business when his father invested in one of the very first of the old Tops Drive-In franchises in the area. While out of grammar school for the summer, he worked a sixty-five hour week in exchange for compensation of just $35.00. Many years later he remains in the restaurant business and insists that he “still makes the best onion rings in town.” Stu entered Gonzaga College High School in the fall of 1957 and a lifetime love affair ensued. There is nothing Stu Long will not do for his beloved Gonzaga. The school he entered in the 1950s consisted of a cramped campus shoe-horned inside a ghetto neighborhood. Today, Gonzaga boasts one of the finest campuses of any city school in the country. Virtually every improvement made on Eye Street in the past forty-plus years has not only Stu Long’s handprints on it, but his “heartprints,” too. In 1979, Stu was named the Gonzaga Alumni Association “Man of the Year.” After graduating from Gonzaga, Stu attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and received his law degree from George Washington University in 1967. He worked as a laborer in his mother’s Capitol Hill restoration ventures, was a waiter at Holy Cross and put himself through law school pouring concrete on the 12th Street Tunnel and the Roosevelt Bridge. Suffice it to say that when Michael and Henry Lange asked him to become a partner in a fledgling

pub business, there were few skills Stu did not have at his command. Stuart and Michael renovated two adjacent buildings in the threehundred block of Pennsylvania Avenue “with their own hands” and opened the Hawk ‘n’ Dove Restaurant in December of 1967. His restorations of commercial buildings on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue are, in large part, responsible for the streetscape as we know it today and reflective of his devotion to the city of Washington. Stu served as Vice Chairman of the D.C. Armory Board from 1979 to 1991 and was the chairman of the Washington, D.C. Police and Fire Meritorious Service Awards Selection Committee from 1980 to 2003. He is a member of several bar associations and has served on the boards of the Washington, D.C. Beverage and Restaurant Association and Federal City National Bank. Stu believes that “common sense is not such a common commodity.” Despite his sophisticated educational background, he would be the first to admit that what he learned waiting tables and working construction may well have made the real difference along the way to his remarkable success.
Whether it is on behalf of Gonzaga College High School, the city of Washington, D.C. itself, or Congressional Country Club, Stuart Long has made a real difference in our community over the last forty years because of his business acumen and because of his love of community. I have nothing but TOASTS for Stu Long – he, John Carmody, and a couple of others are the reason Gonzaga is still here after the terrible 60’s and 70’s. HATS off to a great man, a great friend and a great Eagle. The EAGLES are still soaring!

I knew when Stuart grilled a can of cat food and served it to me as crab cakes in high school that he had a future in sales. And what a salesman he would make! He sold the city on Gonzaga and therefore was instrumental in assembling the current “urban campus” we know now as Gonzaga. He has had the greatest impact on Gonzaga’s physical plant as anyone. Stu, I have some Iberian sausage I’d like you to try! Brendan O’Neill ’60

On a rainy day at the beach BEWARE if you invite Stu over for some homemade margaritas, because you’ll be stuck with him for several hours. He won’t leave on his own. However, if you blink the lights several times he’ll eventually get the “hint” that the party is over. We still love you, Stu. Dottie & Jay Martin

STU’S BLUE Dooley picked the Renovation Team He named Stu to do construction He called on Bob Murray to do the art & Terry Matan’s major part Was to refine it all.
When it came to “color time” Stu refused to let Terry have her Yellows, He forbade Bob to have his red and thousand balloons Stu wanted blue so St. Al’s is Stu’s Blue. But something went amiss When Long invaded the Ladies Room To overhaul their camp. Balloon Bob never saw what happened there, But Terry threw a fit When she saw what Stu had done To make the room a pit Unfit For any color, Not Red, nor yellow or even The Blue of Stu. Rumor has it that the spiritual Stu Had his crypt secretly built beneath The new sanctuary floor For when the Great Hawk & Dove Carry his golf bag and sand traps To Swampoodle Heaven. But little is he aware That Bob & Terry snuck down To decorate his secret tomb With a thousand Red Balloons And A thousand yellow roses and snaps. Congratulations Stu, our team had a great year washing up St. Al’s Church. Terry Matan & Bob Murray ’53

1996 – Stu Long struts across Eye St, adjusts his mustache, notices lady with smile selling tees & caps, stares ahead, keeps walking. 1997 – Stu, with Cherie & children in tow, notices lady selling & smiling, adjusts mustache, keeps walking, wonders why lady smiles so much, doesn’t tell Cherie. 2000 – Stu turns the opposite way of lady selling Gonzaga gear, adjusts mustache, pushes mustache around a bit, asks Cherie why she said hello to lady with smile. 2004 – Stu, looking madder than hell, walks past lady with smile, on a mission to somewhere, turns around, sees lady with smile hugging Fr. Novotny. Asks Cherie, “Who is that lady?” Cherie says “She’s the ‘Always a Gonzaga Mom’ lady.” Stu stares, trying to comprehend. Adjusts mustache, feels underneath for foreign matter. 2008 – Stu attends roast in his honor, walks past the lady smiling, backs up, asks Cherie if she’s the same one, Cherie says, “Yes, she’s Eileen Vaughan and why do you adjust your mustache when you see her?” Eileen Vaughan Colorworks Promotions

“JUST AN OBSERVATION”
It defies all earthly logic to have someone with Stuart’s golf swing involved with, mentioned with, or more astonishingly, pictured with Tiger Woods. As anyone who has played a considerable amount of golf with Stuart knows, it would take Tiger Woods the rest of his entire life to reconstruct Stuart’s game. Just ask Wallace, Birgfield, Jack Sullivan and many other Congressional golfers. Thomas T. Wallace

We’re having lunch with Stuart at the Hawk and Dove and watching the business news, broadcast live that day from the Four Seasons restaurant in lower Manhattan, hangout of Wall Street grandees and home to an elegant indoor fountain. I told Stuart that a fountain like that would really class the Hawk up. He fired back: “I’ve already got three – they’re in the men’s room.”

Stu, It’s been one helluva ride from Gonzaga sophomore intramural basketball champion to the FIRST Alumni Association Roastee! As president of Congressional, you’ve been rubbing elbows with golf’s elite. Tonight you get to rub (and lift) elbows with those that truly matter – your family and friends. Know tonight will be better than one I’ve ‘forgotten’ where, after we partied and parted, you ended sleeping with a pole lamp under a ‘scratchy’ sheet which turned out to be painter’s tarp! (I’ll not even mention the wicker hamper.) With true love and admiration for you and all you do for Gonzaga and the larger community. John Gaughan Gonzaga ’65

Some memories from back in the day – catching rides, sometimes with very strange people, going out New York Avenue to our home in the wilds of Greenbelt and Riverdale; carpooling with Bucky Lamb, the other one-third of the LML Club; triple-dating in a very small car to the Senior Prom; and mostly, lots of laughs along the way. Thirty years ago in Hilton Head, Stu and I were playing golf. On one hole, Stu hit his ball into the marsh. He went to find the errant shot! Twenty minutes later he comes out with his ball and about 12 others!! He was so happy! When we made the turn, Stu called his broker and discovered he had lost 25,000 on calls in the last ten minutes! Stu, if you want to go back, I’m sure there are more balls in that marsh… Chi Chi Tomlin

Gonzaga has learned over the years what it is to have Stu Long on its side. Gonzaga, its students, and alumni have benefitted from Stu’s hard work, dedication and skill. Those of us lucky enough to call him a friend know that he is loyal, trustworthy, a pain in the ass, funny and a loving father, husband & brother. Above all, he is always there when you need him. As we travel this one-way journey of life, it is a pleasure to share the ride with Stu.
