PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Football Fans,

G

onzaga is extremely proud of our long, proud, and successful tradition of football on Eye Street. In particular, we are grateful for the graduating seniors, the class of 2020, who led our team to the first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Championship title since 2002. Congratulations to Coach Trivers and the entire football program on another strong year on the gridiron. I am confident that our teams are poised to carry on the Gonzaga tradition of winning on and off of the field.

“In particular, we are grateful for the graduating seniors, the class of 2020.”

Playing in the WCAC, considered one of the premier high school athletic conferences in the nation, our Eagles face tough competition every time they take the field. While we would love to win all of our games, what is most important is the dedication, teamwork, selflessness, and excellent sportsmanship that our teams exhibit in victory and in defeat. In the end, it is the character of our Gonzaga community that matters most. That sense of community has grown even stronger in my nine years as President. I see our students, faculty, and staff supporting each other continuously in all of their various endeavors, whether academic, athletic, artistic, spiritual, or professional. This is one of the many things that makes Eye Street so remarkable. I am especially grateful to all of our players and coaches for their loyalty and commitment to Gonzaga. Thank you for your support of our football teams and may God bless you all.

Sincerely, Rev. Stephen W. Planning, SJ President

HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Football Fans,

C

ongratulations to the 2019-2020 Gonzaga Varsity Football Team on their 11th straight playoff appearance and on winning a record seven home games this Fall. Students and coaches alike should be proud of another great football season for the Eagles! Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” To me, this quote demonstrates the total team mentality required in the sport of football and in life. We saw this mentality demonstrated by our young men this year. To successfully make it through a school year balancing a commitment to faith, family, school and athletics is no easy task. I know that our boys consistently give their time and effort, not for personal glory, but for the benefit of the “group,” be it on the football field, in the classroom, at home or in the larger community. Therefore, by definition, a Gonzaga football player is a man for others. It is always a good idea to reflect on the role of sports in a Jesuit school. Athletics at Gonzaga is about being generous with one’s God-given talents and life lessons like dedication, committment, and sacrifice. The hard work a studentathlete puts into the season is for the team, our school, and the season’s goal. Athletics is a part of cura personalis – the hallmark of Jesuit education – care of the whole person. Gonzaga forms young men who are well-rounded in body, mind, and spirit; young men who learn that giving one hundred percent is more important than wins and losses. The experiences of our students on the gridiron, in the classroom, and on retreats and Christian service projects, all work together in their respective formation into outstanding young men.

“Students and coaches alike should be proud of of another great football season for the Eagles!

On behalf of the students and faculty, Gonzaga’s football players and coaches, I want to thank you all for your support of this program and for helping to make athletics such a positive experience for so many. The lessons our students can learn in a program such as this will last them a lifetime. Congratulations to all the coaches and players! Go Eagles! Sincerely, Thomas K. Every II Headmaster

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Football Fans,

G

onzaga College High School offers 17 different varsity sports. We are fortunate to have highly supportive administrative and faculty, dedicated coaches and student athletes, and loyal parents and supporters of our athletic programs. 2019-2020 was certainly a different year for Gonzaga Athletics with the second semester being cut short due to the pandemic. However, of the 7 varsity teams that had the opportunity to compete for league championships in the Fall and Winter semesters, 4 earned titles. Additionally, Eagle teams won 2 DC State Championships.

“A special thanks to the seniors for four memorable years including this year’s record seven home wins. Farewell and good luck!”

Gonzaga Football had another strong season. For a ninth straight year, the Eagles defeated Georgetown Prep to win the final installment of the Jesuit Gridiron Classic and to retain the Coup-Kozik Cup. The team also beat Florida powers - American Heritage and Plant - as well as, two-time national champion Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey. The highlight of the year was the team’s win over DeMatha in front of a packed Eye Street crowd on Reunion Weekend to honor the memory of beloved alum and Athletic Hall of Fame football player, Michael Lynn ‘95. Congratulations to all of the members of the 2019 Football Team and thanks to all of our coaches’ hard work and dedication. Thanks to all of the members of the Touchdown Club for their outstanding support of Gonzaga Football. A special thanks to the seniors for four memorable years including this year’s record seven home wins. Farewell and good luck! Eagles fly high!

HEAD COACH’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Football Family,

M

ore often than not, it seems natural for complacency to follow success. The saying “good is the enemy of great” is an ongoing challenge for high achieving teams aspiring to sustain success. Although the 2019 Gonzaga College High School Football Eagles fell short of winning back to back WCAC Championships, the team accomplished some uniquely impressive achievements. Buchanan Field is a unique venue for high school football, and over the years, Gonzaga has had many memorable moments and seasons. The 2019 Eagles became the 1st team in Gonzaga’s illustrious history to truly validate Bucahanan’s “home field advantage” by capturing an unprecedented 7 home regular season victories. Inclusive in the unbeaten campaign were victories against 3 teams visiting from the state of Florida, 2 of which have won multiple Florida state championships. Furthermore, the challenging home schedule included local rival DeMatha who has won more conference titles than any school in our area. Thus, the 7 wins included several formidable opponents. In addition, these Eagles closed one of high school football’s most storied rivalries with a 31-7 victory on the road against Georgetown Prep. This was the 62nd showdown between the 2 schools and the 17th Jesuit Gridiron Classic. Hopefully the rivalry will someday experience a rebirth, but if not, the 2019 Eagles capped it off in grand fashion! Gonzaga students forge a uniquely strong brotherhood during their time on Eye Street. Within the 2019 Eagle team, the Class of 2020 Senior members exemplified the Gonzaga brotherhood to the fullest. 100% of the senior class participated in Gonzaga’s Football Program for all 4 years. 15 student-athletes and 1 student-manager began their football journey in August of 2016 and remained side-by-side through thick and thin until season’s end in November of 2019. The final semester of their journey as students wasn’t what any of these young men expected, but they forged an unbreakable bond of TOGETHERNESS with unwavering TRUST upon their TOUGHNESS being tested. Unfortunately, the final days leading to their originally scheduled graduation ceremony were altered greatly by the Covid19 pandemic. Yet in typical fashion, it is NOW clear to see how the 2020 Class EMBRACED difficult circumstances so they could FINISH on Buchanan Field with their 8th and final victory coming 1 year after their originally scheduled graduation date. The 2019 Eagle football team will be remembered for their many achievements, but most importantly respected for their devotion to and for God’s greater glory!

“The 2019 Eagle football team will be remembered for their many achievements, but most importantly respected for their devotion to and for God’s greater glory!”

onzaga football opened the 2019 season with a strong 33-14 win over American Heritage on Friday, August 30 in front of an electric crowd on Eye Street! After trailing 7-0, Gonzaga got on the board with a 20 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Caleb Williams to tie the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. Heritage responded with another score to take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter. The Eagles responded with 1 yard run from Williams to tie the game at 14-14. It seemed like the back and forth scoring affair would continue, but Jalen McMurray ‘21 intercepted a Heritage pass deep in Eagles territory; and on the very next play, Aaron Turner ‘21 took a screen pass 86 yards to give Gonzaga its first lead of the night. On the ensuing kickoff, Heritage muffed the bouncing ball and Colin O’Connor ‘20 made the crucial recovery with just under 1 minute left in the half. Three plays later, Williams scored with his legs from 10 yards out to give the Eagles a 27-14 lead going into halftime. And on the first drive of the second half, senior captain and runningback Malcolm Terry II scored from 7 yards out. Defensive end Rodney Faulk ‘20 led the team effort with a stellar defensive of performance -- notching two sacks, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble.

he Eagles came from behind for the second straight week, this time to defeat Don Bosco Prep (NJ) on September 6 and improve to 2-0. After trailing 14-0 early in the second quarter, quarterback Caleb Williams ‘21 weaved through the Ironmen defense for an 86 yard touchdown run. Gonzaga’s defense, led by defensive back Kye Holmes ‘21, stiffened and would not let up another point on the night. Williams then found wide receiver Justin Ennis ‘21 on a 20 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14 going into halftime. Although the Eagles gave up a punt block for a touchdown to open the second half, the team did not flinch and scored the final three touchdowns of the game. Williams accounted for all three scores as he found Ennis on a 9 yard pass, ran another one in from 40 yards out, and connected with junior wide receiver Aaron Turner on a 35 yard touchdown catch and run to seal the win. Junior kicker and punter Stephen Cullina turned in a strong performance on special teams.

T

he Eagles were down 7-3 to Georgetown Prep at halftime of the 17th annual Jesuit Gridiron Classic on Saturday, September 14. The Little Hoyas were looking to notch their first win in the series since 2011, but could not hold the lead as top-ranked Gonzaga took control in the second half. Coach Trivers’ team would score the final 21 points in the third quarter behind touchdown runs from RBs Joseph Hammond ‘22 and Malcolm Terry II ‘20. Hammond got in the endzone first from 6 yards out, and then following a fumble recovery from senior defensive end Henry Iloanya, Terry scored from 6 yards out as well. Hammond’s second touchdown was a 12 yard run that came with just 4 seconds left in the quarter. The defense, led by a strong performance from senior DB Colin O’Connor, forced a three and out to start the final quarter. On the next possession, senior fullback Derrick Aikens capped off a 9 play, 81 yard drive with a 1 yard plunge to make the score 31-7. Aikens also turned in a great performance on special teams. The most valuable players of the game were the entire offensive line: Olu Fashanu ‘20, Luke Petitbon ‘20, Jestus Johnson ‘20, Joey Trainor ‘21, Patrick Matan ‘20, and Cameron Wilson ‘22. The unit paved the way for over 400 yards of offense with 290 coming on the ground while allowing no sacks on the day. WEEKLY AWARDS

During the week leading up to fourth game of the year--Gonzaga’s Homecoming Game--the team worked with WZAG (Gonzaga’s daily homeroom television broadcast) and student services to support National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Former Captain Dean Engram ‘19 (Wisconsin University) and Trey ‘23 lost their sister Bobbi to sickle cell disease in August of 2018. Their eight year-old sister Phoebe has the disease and is currently fighting her battle. In addition to the video that aired for the student body, posters were made and hung around the school. On them, students found information on how to support the BobbiEngram Foundation as well as this quote from Phoebe, “Just knowing people care and want to help,” she says, “makes me feel good!” Players, coaches, and trainers wore a red towel, while fans were encouraged to wear red gear in solidarity of the effort to raise awareness. Phoebe was an honorary captain and was overjoyed to be able to toss the coin at midfield before the game.

A CALL TO SET T

“AFTER BEING MOVED BY MS. BRENDA TRACY’S PRESENTATIO

T

he Eagles remained undefeated with a win over Plant High School from Tampa, Florida on September 27. The game also marked the first time that Gonzaga took part in the #SetTheExpectation campaign, a movement that raises awareness against sexual and physical violence. Coach Trivers and Plant Head Coach Bob Weiner agreed to participate in the game after seeing a presentation together in Oregon earlier in the year. The campaign began in 2016 when Brenda Tracy began sharing her survival story nationally of a brutal gang rape she endured in 1998. Studentathletes are asked to spread the message with compassion and respect. In addition to learning about the #SetTheExpectation pledge leading up to the game, both teams wore ribbon decals on their helmets and carried a large ribbon at the coin toss. Additionally, a large banner was hung near the Gonzaga Touchdown Club tent during the game. On the field, the game was a 0-0 stalemate midway through the second quarter when junior QB Caleb Williams connected with junior wide receiver Hayden Fisher for a 13 yard touchdown. After the teams traded punts, the Panthers scored in just two plays and tied the game 7-7 with a 34 yard touchdown pass of their own. Gonzaga’s offense got the ball back with just over two minutes remaining in the half and would respond by going 80 yards in just 6 plays to regain the lead. Junior WR Aaron Turner hauled in a 47 yard catch and Williams capped the drive with an 18 yard touchdown run to make it 14-7 at the half. After receiving the second half kickoff, the Eagles offense started fast. Malcolm Terry II ‘20 ripped off a 54 yard run on the first play from scrimmage, and two plays later, Joseph Hammond Jr. ‘22 scored on a 3 yard run. Plant responded with a strong 11 play drive, but their 27 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Kye Holmes ‘21 and Luke Petitbon ‘20. Gonzaga dominated the rest of the action to earn the 48-7 win. Defensive lineman Isaiah Neal ‘23 led the way on defense and linebacker Kadari Machen ‘22 had a great performance on special teams.

Special thanks to our parents and volunteer photographers!

The Eagles completed their non-conference schedule with another dominant victory, 41-6 over Leesburg High School from Florida on October 4. Head Coach Randy Trivers’s former program became the first football program from Lake County (just outside of Orlando, FL) to play an out of state game. In addition to playing the game on Friday night, the Yellow Jackets toured the African American History Musuem on Thursday, and visited the Capitol and other monuments on Saturday. After a turnover by Leesburg on their opening possesion and a missed field goal by Gonzaga, the Eagles took control by scoring on their next 5 possessions to take a 31-0 lead into halftime. Senior captain Luke Petitbon had another outstanding day in all three phases while senior defensive end Henry Iloanya had a great game on defense. Tight end Nate Kurisky ‘22 made a great catch early in the game and contributed to a solid running performance. The Eagles special teams were lead by the accurate kicking of Stephen Cullina ‘21 who made field goals of 37 and 40 yards, and by the tackling of Kye Holmes ‘21. gonzaga.org/football

The Eagles fell to Good Counsel in a tough game on the road. Despite outgaining the Falcons by more than 150 yards, Gonzaga could not earn their first WCAC victory of 2019. The score was tied 7-7 at the end of regulation, but as The Washington Post put it, the “low-scoring slog morphed into five-OT shootout.” The lone score for Gonzaga in regulation came on a 10 yard touchdown catch by junior WR Hayden Fisher. In overtime, junior QB Caleb Williams carried the load, scoring all four overtime touchdowns on keepers. gonzaga.org/football

n a beautiful day on Eye Street, in front of a packed crowd that included nine reunion classes, the Eagles defeated the then top-ranked DeMatha Stags, 28-26 to improve to 7-1 on the year and 1-1 in WCAC play. The muchanticipated re-match of the 2018 WCAC Championship did not dissapoint as both teams impressed and fought hard to the very end. Gonzaga stopped the Stags’s two-point conversion attempt with :35 seconds left to seal the win. Caleb Williams ‘21 led the way once again by throwing one touchdown (to TE Nate Kurisky ‘22) and scoring three touchdowns on the ground (85 yards, 1 yard, 2 yards). Olu Fashanu ‘20 was the anchor on the offensive line that helped Gonzaga gain exactly 300 yards on the ground, and Jackson Leggans ‘21 was the pivotal piece in the defensive line that only allowed one rushing touchdown on the day. On special teams, Kye Holmes ‘21 made the play of the day for the Eagles. After the Stage returned a kickoff 99 yard for a touchdown, Holmes blocked DeMatha’s extra point attempt to preserve a 28-20 lead midway through the fourth quarter -- setting up the aforementioned failed two-point attempt that sealed the game. The game was played in memory of Michael Lynn ‘94. His wife Erica and his son Noah were honorary captains and participated in the coin toss. Mike’s best friend Jim Miller ‘94 and his wife Natasha Stancill were also there to support. WEEKLY AWARDS

SENIOR DAY ROUT 16 HONORED: EAGLES DOMINATE MUSTAGS FOR 7TH HOME VIC

n the third WCAC contest of 2019, the Eagles took on Bishop McNamara. Prior to the contest, fifteen senior student-athletes and one student-manager were honored. Gonzaga started fast and took a 14-0 lead behind a five-yard touchdown pass from QB Caleb Williams ‘21 to WR Hayden Fisher ‘21 and a three-yard touchdown run by WR Aaron Turner ‘21. After the Mustangs got on the board to cut the lead in half early in the second quarter, Turner returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards to make the score 21-7. The defense, led by LB Trey Jamison ‘21, forced a three and out on the next drive. Five plays later, Williams found RB Malcolm Terry II ‘20 for a nine-yard TD catch -- Terry’s first career TD reception. McNamara would not give up. After converting on a fake punt to earn a first down, the Mustangs got in the endzone again to make the score 28-14 with under two minutes to go in the half. However, Williams found Turner on the very next play from scrimmage on a 71-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-14. Defensive back Jalen McMurray ‘21 snagged an interception just before halftime to send the Eagles into the locker room with a three score lead. Tight end Connor Fagan ‘20 caught a 22-yard TD, Turner added another TD catch (41 yards), and DB Auggie Sommers ‘20 recovered his second onsides kick of the day late in the game to seal the win.

Ever since Head Coach Randy Trivers took over the reins of the Gonzaga Football program five years ago, the team has used its bye week to perform service. During the week of October 28, Scholar Baller squads made visits to Children’s Hospital, Unique Residential Care, Washington Jesuit Academy, the Father McKenna Center, and St. John Baptist Church. “Our objective was to extend our hearts and hands to others who could benefit from our service,” says Coach Trivers. “We hope that the experiences have inspired our young men to continue to keep service at the forefront of their personal journeys as growing Men for Others.”

On Friday November 1, the Class of 2020 Eagles partook in valuable experiences. The senior football players and coaching staff gathered for the Senior Feast which is an annual gathering of the seniors and coaching staff at the Trivers family home. The event includes various opportunities for members of the program to reflect, share, understand and appreciate Gonzaga Football legacy and traditions (pictured above). To culminate the bye week, players and coaches participated in the “Run, Walk -n- Roll to Cure Sickle Cell Anemia” on November 2 in support of the Bobbi Engram Foundation.

With the close loss to St. John’s in Game 10, Gonzaga still holds a slight edge over the Cadets in the oldest Catholic high school football rivarly in the nation with a record of 47-46 and five ties. The 98th Game was played on Saturday, November 9 at Catholic University in front a capacity crowd. The Eagles led 28-17 late in the third quarter, but the Cadets would score the final two touchdowns to get the win. Heading into the contest, both teams were locked into their respective seeds for the WCAC playoffs with St. John’s drawing the #1 seed and Gonzaga drawing the #3 seed.

In the WCAC Semifinal at Good Counsel, Gonzaga had a tough night to conclude the season. The win for the Falcons would propel them to a dramatic win in the WCAC Championship over St. John’s (who defeated DeMatha in the other semifinal) a week later. QB Caleb Williams ’21 scored on 14 yard scramble in the second quarter to tie the game 7-7, but Good Counsel’s seniors had a strong night on both defense and offense to take control from that point forward. Two additional highlights for the Eagles were a recovered kickoff by DB Jalen McMurray ‘21 to open the second half and a 44 yard TD catch by WR Hayden Fisher ‘21 in the third quarter. gonzaga.org/football
