ES "¿DONDE ESTÁ?" Fue la primera pregunta que hicimos al llegar a Pucón, al sur de Chile. Mirábamos de un lado a otro y también hacia arriba para encontrar el volcán Villarrica, el más activo del país. Al otro lado, un lago de 176 km tiene el mismo nombre. La naturaleza se muestra grandiosa en esta ciudad de 26 mil habitantes, en la Región de La Araucanía, a 797 km de Santiago. Por esas y tantas otras atracciones, la vida en Pucón fluye al aire libre. Esquí en invierno, rafting y birdwatching en primavera, pesca con mosca y mountain bike en otoño, kayak y stand up paddle en verano-aparte de escaladas al volcán durante todo el añoson algunas de las actividades. Con lluvia o sol, Pucón te llevará junto a la naturaleza. Antes de convertirse en destino de aventura y reunir más de 80 opciones de hospedaje, Pucón era muy visitada por la clase alta chilena. Inaugurado en los años 1930 para servir a ese público, y aún vigente, el Gran Hotel Pucón está estratégicamente ubicado: justo frente a la playa de agua dulce y arena negrísima que se llena de turistas durante enero y febrero. En las décadas del 40 y 50, el empresario Guillermo Pollak levantó otra construcción emblemática al borde del lago: el hotel Antumalal, con arquitectura de aires modernistas. El que se hospeda en el cuarto pegado a la playa particular tiene una ventaja: dormir con el ruido del agua que choca suavemente contra las piedras volcánicas.

EN "WHERE IS IT?" It was the first question we asked when we arrived in Pucón, in the south of Chile. We looked from one side to the other and also up to find the Villarrica volcano, the most active in the country. On the other side, a 176 km lake has the same name. Nature is magnificent in this city of 26,000 inhabitants, in the Araucanía Region, 797 km from Santiago. Because of these and many other attractions, life in Pucón flows outdoors. Opened in the 1930s to serve this public, and still in use, the Gran Hotel Pucón is strategically located: right in front of the freshwater beach with black sand that fills with tourists during January and February. In the 1940s and 1950s, businessman Guillermo Pollak built another emblematic construction on the edge of the lake: the Antumalal hotel, with modernist architecture. En los meses de frío, las cuestas del Villarrica, que tienen 20 pistas, aparte de una escuela para niños, son concurridas. La infraestructura es rústica, y la vista, increíble. Allí, aprovecha la experiencia de deslizarte por una montaña que expide humo. El volcán es el escenario de la mayor aventura de Pucón. La escalada hasta la cumbre, a 2.847 metros, exige cinco horas de subida y recompensa a los que llegan con vista hacia... imagma! Solidificado o líquido, muchas veces se puede espiar el material que compone el centro de la Tierra por el cráter. La pregunta inevitable aparece en nuestra mente: cy si de repente se pone a expulsar lava? (la última vez fue en 2015). Nuestro guía, Gonzalo Sañudo, explica: hay aparatos que monitorean la actividad de la montaña, entonces las sendas estarían cerradas si hubiera cualquier riesgo de erupción. Para un paseo sin tanto desgaste físico, prueba el rafting de nivel 1en el río Liucura (piedra blanca, en mapudungun, idioma mapuche). El trayecto está enmarcado por montañas y, claro, por el volcán. El aire recibe rachas de perfume de ulmo, árbol cuya flor produce una miel con propiedades antibacterianas. Pero piensa bien antes de zambullirte en el Liucura: el agua es congelada. The route is framed by mountains and, of course, by the volcano. The air receives streaks of perfume from the ulmo, a tree whose flower produces honey with antibacterial properties. But think carefully before diving into the Liucura: the water is frozen. For more adrenaline, go to the Trancura River, where the rafting ranges from levels 3 to 5.

La naturaleza, caprichosa, puede incluir frío y lluvia en la programación de cualquier viajero. Pero en Pucón eso no es motivo para preocuparse. Esas condiciones climáticas son ideales para uno de los programas altos del viaje: un día dedicado a las termas. Existen decenas en la región y son un regalo de la actividad volcánica. Vale la pena viajar 1h30 por la ruta hacia las Termas Geométricas, propiedad particular en medio de un desfiladero verde con una vista de ensueño, sensación intensificada por el vapor que sube de las 19 piscinas con temperaturas entre 35ºC y 45°C. Los 500 metros de pasarelas rojas construidas sobre un río nos transportan al Extremo Oriente. De vuelta al centro, la oferta gastronómica deja satisfechos a veganos y carnívoros. Para merendar, chocolates, sándwiches y cafés son lo mejor del concurrido Cassis. Entre comidas, la tienda del artesano Serbando Castillo Morales merece una visita. Hace 50 años, él puso de moda las flores de madera que se transformaron en un suvenir regional. Pétalos de rosas, camelias y dalias surgen a partir de varetas con puntas como lápices. Reserva un espacio para ellas en la valija y, de vuelta a casa, podrás acordarte de este lugar edificado entre un lago y un volcán./
