Editor’s Note

As the New Year arrived, I once again faced the unsettling reality of change. It’s never easy—it shakes up what’s familiar and challenges us to adjust. But with change comes a choice: to embrace it or resist it. I’ve encountered change many times, sometimes succeeding and other times realizing my passions didn’t match the path I was on. This year, I’ve chosen “passion” as my focus word, and with that, I’m thrilled to share the first-ever issue of Living Local.

When we picked this name, our mission was clear: to celebrate our love for the Waterloo-Wellington Region and the connections we’ve made here. Our vision is to engage

with readers and support local businesses in a real and authentic way. In today’s fast-paced world, authenticity is more important than ever.

At Living Local, we aim to build meaningful connections between readers and advertisers, all driven by shared passion. Let’s celebrate everything that makes our community special. Welcome to the very first issue of Living Local. As you dive into our new name and design, we hope you’ll find inspiration and fuel for your own passions along the way.

CLOSET DETOX

SIMPLE TIPS TO REFRESH YOUR WARDROBE AND YOUR LIFE

A fresh new year is a great time to clean up living spaces within our homes. Starting with our closets, an effective approach is taking the time to assess our belongings and which ones we will carry through the next year, and which ones are ready to be cleared. A great rule of thumb is the three pile strategy; Keep, toss, or donate/sell. For clothing you should ask yourself; when was the last time I wore this? How do I feel when I wear this? Does this item fit me comfortably? Or, does it have sentimental value? If you decide that it’s time to get rid of items there are so many organizations for donations such as; Goodwill, The Diabetes Foundation or Salvation Army. If you have clothing that’s in great shape, or for particular high end brands, you can sell the items on platforms such as Poshmark, ThredUp or Depop.

ORGANIZING TIPS

Make Every Inch Count

Assess your closet space and utilize baskets, bins, space saving hangers and hanging storage compartments.

If your closet is an open space, consider investing in a closet organizing system. Ikea is known for their variety of closet organizing items and units, but systems are also available on Amazon or at stores like Canadian Tire. Be sure to measure your space carefully to purchase the right unit for your space.

Add a small dresser or standing storage unit into open closet spaces

Organize hanging items with clever space saving hangers.

Hang or store items colour coded for a pretty aesthetic, while making items easy to find.

USEFUL ORGANIZING ITEMS

Clever hangers with hooks to hang your denim by the belt loops. Keeps denim wrinkle free & clears up shelving and drawer space. In the summer, swap out for shorts and lighter pants

Great for seasonal clothing that can be folded and stored away Ideal solution for bulkier items that take up space or are hard to fold BASKETS & STORAGE BINS

CLEAR ACRYLIC PURSE ORGANIZER

Great for storing clutches and small to medium sized purses Keeps accessories neat and housed in one contained area Easy to see & grab

LEGGINGS HANGERS

Maximize space with compact design. Great for leggings, scarves, tanks and lightweight clothing

Tuck away seasonal footwear and accessories. Saves space and keeps shoes dust free. Great space for extra belts and small items UNDER BED SHOE STORAGE

Luxurious brand new home, expertly crafted with 4680 sq/ft of total finished living space. Home boasts a sophisticated open-concept layout with 10" ceilings, 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, two balconies, large attic, finished basement, fully fenced and is located within walking distance to everything in Uptown Waterloo.

1 Banfield, Paris ON

Set just outside the downtown core of one of Canada’s prettiest small towns and just 90 minutes from Toronto, 1 Banfield is a historic Gothic Victorian estate built in 1854. Originally owned by Charles Whitlaw, of Paris Mills fame, this elegant 5,800-square-foot home retains many original features, including a slate roof, hardwood floors, copper eaves, plaster moldings, and five fireplaces. The ground floor boasts a grand dining room, formal living room, family room with a working fireplace, and a sunroom. The second floor includes four large bedrooms, two ensuite bathrooms, and a spa bathroom with a skylight and steam room. A fifth bedroom, formerly a maid's quarters, is off the country kitchen. Additional potential lies in the 1,389-square-foot attic and 1,716-square-foot lower level.

How to Purchase Original Art

Areyou still clinging to those mass-produced IKEA prints you bought in 2003 for your dorm room? Ever stared at a blank wall in your home and thought, Am I lacking in personality? It’s time to throw yourself into the art world. If your house needs an update the most important design element IS the artwork. Abstract, Non Objective, and Non Figurative pieces compliment a contemporary setting. Finding the right artwork isn’t just for billionaires with private collections-it’s an exciting way to express your style and bring a unique story to your space.

Start your search by exploring online art hubs like Instagram, Etsy, or www.artfinder.com. Hashtags like #AbstractArt, #ModernArt, #LocalArt or #OriginalArt can be goldmines for finding talented artists. Don’t overlook local galleries like PWD Art Gallery or art shows-nothing beats meeting an artist in person on the night of their art opening. Waterloo Region and Wellington County, are fantastic areas to find vibrant art fairs, neighbourhood art walks, night markets, and galleries throughout the year. There’s so much talent bubbling up in these communities. Whether it’s an emerging artist like William MacKenzie or a long-time local favourite like Edward Hanson, take the time to get to know which local artists resonate with your personal style.

Devote attention to their use of colour, texture, and shape. If you’re looking for calming neutral vibes but their work screams neon chaos, it might not be your perfect match. Trust your gut here-you’ll be living with this piece for years to come!

Of course, budget is always a factor. Most of us can’t just stroll into a gallery and buy whatever catches our eye. But here’s the thing: original art is an investment. It adds character to your home and reflects your unique personality. Finding an artist whose work resonates with you and fits your budget can bring lasting joy and peace of mind.

Think about it this way: some people spend $3,000 on a cruise in the Bahamas, only to come home with a few digital photos, a hangover, and maybe a few extra pounds. But what if you

invested that $3,000 into a stunning, original art piece? Not only could it transform your space, but it might also appreciate in value-who knows, you could end up owning the next Picasso!

There’s no way to perfectly predict which emerging artists will become famous. So just rest in the fact that art is the gift that keeps on giving. So make space on your wall find the perfect piece, and take the plunge into becoming a collector of original art. It’s an investment you’ll never regret.

From Crib to Cool

A Baby’s Nursery Built to Grow

A baby’s room needs to be fun and playful, but also a place they can grow into. For this baby boy’s nursery I kept longevity in mind, creating a space that would take him from toddler to teen with minimal updates.

Sometimes you need to think outside the box when choosing décor pieces. In this room we certainly did that when we took a tool box and made it into a dresser. It screams everything boy! It’s also indestructible which is ideal for rough and tumble toddlers.

Instead of just painting the walls, we wanted to add layers and textures so we went with wallpaper, dark crown molding and wainscoting to really finish the space in a unique way.

I went with low profile pieces when it came to furniture. The room was small so it helped to create the illusion of more space. We chose this great Tribeca 4-In-1 Convertible Crib that will take the family through baby to toddlers years. We also added in this sweet mobile. We finished off the bed with the most perfect bedding from Bouclair’s baby line.

My clients really wanted an air purifier in the room for the new baby; since the room is so small, we opted to remove the closet door to give us extra room required. We chose a great Philips unit that fit in perfectly with the décor and tucks nicely into the open air closet. Other than looking great, this unit reduces allergens, gases and odors in the space and the filter captures 99.97% of particles that pass through the filters.

I added in some dramatic pieces from Homesense like a faux fur rug, side tables and lamps to completely tie the space together. This room is perfect for a baby or a toddler, and can easily accommodate an older child or teen with minimal updates.

A WINTER WEEKEND IN TORONTO

CULTURE, CUISINE, & COMFORT

The cold months of January and February often bring a yearning for a little escape from the monotony of Winter. If jetting off to a tropical paradise isn’t in the cards, Toronto offers an exciting alternative. With its vibrant culture, world-class dining, and unparalleled hospitality, the city provides the perfect setting for a staycation that feels like a true getaway.

Day 1: Arrival and Evening Adventures

Our journey began with a one-hour drive from Kitchener-Waterloo to the St. Germain Hotel, a modern boutique retreat in the heart of Toronto’s entertainment district. The warm welcome from the staff, seamless check-in, and elegant design immediately set the tone for a luxurious weekend. Our room featured a sleek stand-up shower, a Nespresso coffee maker, and a stunning view of the CN Tower, making it the perfect home base.

www.germainhotels.com

Once settled, we headed to Stackt Market, an innovative hub made of repurposed shipping containers filled with unique shops, art, and eateries. At Blue Moon Brewery, we enjoyed a round of craft beer before indulging in a culinary treat at Fat Bao, where the OJ Bao and poutine dumplings stole the show.

Our evening continued with a visit to Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, a captivating underwater world filled with vibrant marine life. The shark tunnel was a highlight, leaving us awestruck by its immersive beauty. To end the night, we walked to The Rec Room, a lively entertainment space just minutes from our hotel, where we enjoyed drinks and arcade games.

Day 2: Relaxation and Entertainment

Despite the rain, we embraced the day, starting with a relaxing visit to Etiket Spa at The Well. The Tata Harper Signature Facial was an hour of pure bliss, leaving us refreshed and ready for more exploration.

Afterward, we explored The Well’s food court, a vibrant space with endless culinary options. We opted for Rosie’s Burger, a perfectly crafted meal that hit the spot. With so many choices, we made a mental note to return and try more.

The afternoon was a special highlight: a performance by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra at Scotiabank Arena, a Christmas gift for my partner. The electrifying show was a feast for the senses, made even better by the arena’s proximity to our hotel.

Dinner that evening at 360 Restaurant, a rotating spot on top of the CN Tower, was an unforgettable experience. The restaurant makes a full rotation in 72 minutes, giving you a complete view of the Toronto skyline. We enjoyed delicious lamb chops, fresh seafood, and their famous Milk Chocolate and Hazelnut Tart. The combination of great food and stunning views of the city’s lights made for a magical atmosphere. The talented team at 360 focuses on using the freshest, most sustainable ingredients, bringing flavors from all across Canada-from coast to coast to coast.

Day 3: Culture and Farewell

Our final day began with a visit to Canadaland, an engaging space showcasing Canadian culture through storytelling and art. The focus on Indigenous voices was particularly moving, offering profound insights into Canada’s heritage. Canadaland is an excellent experience for families and children of all ages.

We concluded our trip at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), exploring exhibits that spanned ancient

history, natural science, and art. The Dinosaur Gallery and the Gallery of Canada: First Peoples stood out, captivating us with their depth and beauty.

As we drove back to Kitchener-Waterloo, we reflected on a weekend filled with unforgettable moments. From luxurious accommodations to cultural discoveries and culinary delights, Toronto had delivered a perfect winter escape.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

Understanding Your Pup’s Most Common Behaviour

Dogs bark to communicate, but decoding the message can be tricky. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is there a perceived threat? Recognizing the reason behind barking is essential to managing it effectively.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

Dogs bark for specific reasons, and recognizing the cause is essential.

Needs: Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside?

Attention: Are they bored or seeking interaction?

Alerts: Is someone at the door, or is there a perceived threat?

By observing your dog’s body language and listening carefully, you can begin to understand what they’re trying to communicate.

How you respond to barking can determine whether it becomes a persistent habit. If your dog barks because they want to play, ignoring the behaviour can help discourage it. Any attention-positive or negative-reinforces the barking. When barking serves a practical purpose, like alerting you to an empty water dish, it’s important to acknowledge and address it promptly.

Our instinct when a dog barks for attention is often to shush them or tell them to stop. However, whether you use soothing words or scolding, your reaction reinforces the behaviour. The barking got a response-exactly what your dog wanted. To break this cycle, ignore attention-seeking barking completely.

Last fall, a client’s Goldendoodle, Charlie, had two types of barking. She would bark at the door to alert the family of a potential security threat and also bark for attention. While the door barking was helpful, the attention-seeking barking became problematic. By consistently ignoring this behaviour, Charlie learned it wasn’t rewarded. Instead, quiet behaviour earned positive reinforcement. Over time, she stopped barking for attention, but her helpful door barking remained.

Tips to Manage Barking

Understand the Cause: Ask yourself, "Why is my dog barking? Is it a genuine need or testing boundaries?"

Stay Consistent: Avoid rewarding unnecessary barking. Even scolding reinforces the behaviour.

Redirect Behaviour: Engage your dog in a productive activity once they stop barking.

Reward Silence: Praise and reward quiet behaviour to encourage it in the future.

Barking is your dog’s way of communicating, but it doesn’t always require a response. By understanding why your dog barks and responding consistently, you can guide them toward more appropriate communication. With patience and clear boundaries, you’ll build a stronger bond with your dog while maintaining peace at home.

Find Your Perfect Valentine

Valentine’s Day: you either love it, hate it, or ignore it, but one thing's certain-like a rom-com binge, it keeps coming around. In 2025, dating isn’t about finding "the one"; it’s about avoiding "the wrong one." Here’s a look at the dating trends shaping the year, so you can mingle without the chaos.

Hobo-Sexuals Return

They're back, and they’ve upgraded their pitch. No longer just looking for love, these couch-surfing romantics are searching for free Wi-Fi and your Netflix password. Beware of first dates with duffel bags-they’re not heading to the gym.

AI-Assisted Dating

Why stress over crafting a witty icebreaker when AI can do it for you? Apps now offer AI-generated conversation starters, but some singles take it further, outsourcing entire chats. If their banter feels robotic, throw them a curveball: “Pineapple on pizza-yay or nay?” Watch the response closely.

Dating Forward

In 2025, endless swiping gives way to “dating forward”-meeting IRL sooner rather than later. While refreshing, face-to-face surprises await. If your match suggests their "favourite rooftop" but it’s a fire escape, maybe rethink.

Main Character Syndrome

Romantic partners now see relationships as their rom-coms. Dramatic exits, over-the-top gestures, and “ex from season 3” references abound. Green flag? They make you feel like co-stars. Red flag? You’re just part of the scenery.

Love Bombing 2.0

From shared playlists to joint calendars after two dates, love bombing is more extreme than ever. It may seem sweet, but if they’re asking to move in too soon, tread carefully.

Eco-Conscious Dating

From park cleanups to thrift-store outings, sustainability is the new sexy. Just hope your date doesn’t suggest dumpster diving as a bonding activity.

In 2025, love is thrilling, weird, and occasionally cringeworthy. Swipe smart, skip the drama, and keep your Netflix password to yourself.

Glow WinterThrough

Essential Skincare Tips for Dry Skin

Winter weather can leave your skin feeling dry, flaky, and dull, but with the right care, you can maintain a healthy, hydrated glow. Here are key skincare tips to help you combat dryness this season:

Hydrate Inside and Out

Hydration is essential for healthy skin. Drink plenty of water and use a rich moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides. Vivier’s Lexxel Cream locks in moisture, keeping skin soft. For extra protection, apply Vivier’s V Stat on your lips and cheeks after outdoor activities. For overnight hydration, try Vivier’s Ultra Hydrating Mask-no rinse required!

Choose Gentle Cleansers

Winter air can be harsh on your skin, so switch to a cream-based or hydrating cleanser. Vivier’s Hexam Cleanser is perfect for removing makeup and impurities without drying out your skin, making it suitable for all skin types.

Don’t Skip Sunscreen

Even in winter, UV rays can damage your skin. Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily to protect against harmful rays. Vivier’s Tinted SPF blends into all skin tones, offering excellent protection.

Add Professional Treatments

For deep hydration, consider treatments like Hydrafacials and microneedling at SPAudrey Medi Spa. These treatments nourish and rejuvenate your skin, leaving it smooth and radiant.

Use a Humidifier

Indoor heating can dry out the air, worsening skin dryness. A humidifier helps maintain moisture in the air, keeping your skin hydrated.

By following these simple steps-hydrating, moisturizing, protecting, and treating-your skin can stay soft, nourished, and glowing all winter long.

THE "L E T T H E M " THEORY

Working on your mental health in 2025 using Mel Robbins’ bestselling theory

If you’re looking for a f resh way to prioritize your mental health in 2025, Mel Robbins' The "Let Them" Theory offers a simple yet powerful approach to fostering peace and emotional growth

At its heart, the theory encourages you to stop trying to control others’ actions, feelings, or decisions and instead embrace the f reedom that comes f rom letting people be who they are. By focusing on what you can control-your own reactions, boundaries, and priorities-you’ll create a healthier mental space for yourself

Here’s how to apply it:

First, practice acceptance. When someone excludes you, doesn’t meet your expectations, or chooses a path you don’t understand, remind yourself to let them. Their actions are a reflection of their priorities, not yours. This shift allows you to release f rustration and focus on building relationships with those who align with your values.

Second, set clear boundaries. Letting others do as they wish doesn’t mean tolerating poor treatment Instead, use their behaviour to guide how much access or influence they have in your life

Lastly, focus inward Use the time and energy you’d spend worrying about others to invest in personal growth, hobbies, or self-care. Many of us are so preoccupied with what others do, think, or say that we overlook the fact that living our best life starts with taking responsibility for ourselves

The "Let Them" Theory is liberating because it ref rames your perspective, reducing unnecessary stress and conflict In a world where external pressures can feel overwhelming, this philosophy reminds you to reclaim your power by focusing on your own peace. It’s a must-try strategy for anyone seeking a mentally healthier 2025

1 onion, diced

1 small green bell pepper, diced

250 ml (1 cup) frozen whole kernel corn, thawed
