Sutton’s Going on... in Simcoe County

BILL KINDOU BROKER OF RECORD

Top 100 Employer speaks out on Simcoe county Real Estate

SUTTON GROUP INCENTIVE REALTY INC., BROKERAGE More and more clients are turning to the expertise and market knowledge of Sutton’s professional agents and leaving with a smile and a good review.

Bill Kindou, Broker of Record at Sutton Group Incentive Barrie, purchased the business in 2002 from Don Jerry, who had owned it previously since 1993. In the past 15 years since taking ownership, Bill has seen tremendous development and been able to grow the staff from 40 agents at time of purchase to over 200 including staff. With ten branch offices including the Barrie main office, Barrie Branch office, Orillia, Alliston, Innisfil and Collingwood offices, as well as Angus, Port Carling and Gravenhurst coming soon, Sutton Group Incentive is situated right where clients require, and with the most agents of any Barrie real estate company, it’s ready to get down to business, whether that be anything from leasing property to selling your home or a piece of land. “We handle residential, commercial, farms, vacant lands and leases,” Bill explained, noting agents are ready and enthusiastic to work with clients to achieve positive outcomes on a variety of transactions. “For any real estate needs just call one of our offices.” With a balanced and fair-minded business approach, Bill has been able to create an environment where

clients and sales representatives alike thrive and grow. Sutton provides a superb compensation package for agents and also ensures they always have top-notch computers and the most modern technology to do their job at peak efficiency and with all the latest tools. Bill also conducts weekly in-house training for agents, keeping them on top of market trends, changing regulations, and every other aspect of the real estate business.

Sutton’s excellent treatment of its agents extends to its clients as well, as it proves to be the perfect fit for an increasing number of families and individuals looking to buy, sell or lease.

Sutton is 100 percent Canadian-owned and was founded in Vancouver in 1983. It offered a groundbreaking new real estate concept and soon gained momentum and growth, expanding throughout the country. After its steady growth since founding, Sutton now has a total of around 200 offices across Canada and over 8,000 sales representatives. Sutton’s core philosophy and business model puts the realtor and client, rather than the real estate agency, at the centre of every transaction, giving priority to an optimal customer-sales representative relationship and smooth, rewarding transaction. Selling a home can be a challenging task, but with the confidence, professionalism and market knowledge of a Sutton sales representative it becomes that much easier. Choosing Sutton is a big step in the right direction towards a successful, rewarding real estate transaction, and Bill is hoping for even more expansion in the future. “We look forward to continued growth in our company,” Bill said. “We also thank all of our clients who’ve supported our business over the years.”

Sutton Group Barrie also prides itself on giving back to the community, and donates to charities including Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Care Centre (RVH), The Barrie Women and Children’s Crisis Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie, Media For Young Minds and other worthy causes throughout Simcoe County.

IT IS OUR FOCUS TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE SATISFIED …TODAY…TOMORROW… AND IN THE FUTURE. * SUTTON GROUP SERVICES: WE KNOW HOW TO MOVE YOU – IT’S OUR BUSINESS

By fostering training and leadership programs for staff, giving constant attention to encouraging excellent business relationships and upholding a business model built around a cost-controlled, creative approach, Sutton continues to be able to offer the outstanding service and results for which it is known. As it continually adapts to the latest market developments Sutton stands at the apex of industry, technology and marketing moving forward.

GARRETT’S

FARM MARKET & GREENHOUSES Celebrating 37 years of Growing

“Your Local Grower of High Quality Plants!”

I’ve lived in Barrie most of my life, and I am still learning new things about the city all the time. Putting together this year’s Our City, I learned about some amazing places, people and events that help make our community great. Our aim with the Community Champions feature is to introduce you to a few of the many people making a difference in the city. From football coaches to entrepreneurs, artists to charity crusaders, Barrie is home to some truly extraordinary people. Our City takes a step back in time and looks at how Barrie came to be. With Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary, we check out what it was like in this area at the time of Confederation. We also take a close look at what The MacLaren Art Centre has to offer young artists. With several art camps set for summer, be sure to check out this downtown gallery. We explore the expansion of the Barrie Farmers’ Market, which will take over the Mulcaster and Collier streets intersection every Saturday morning until the fall. With vegetables, honey, treats and even perogies, the market showcases local farmers and vendors with a variety of products. Golf Barrie is another entity in our city and we check in with the group, aiming to grow the game here and support an industry that provides dozens of local jobs. Beyond this, we offer you some of the regular features in our annual guide. We detail the many festivals, events and other activities our city offers. We even asked you to capture and share what makes Barrie so great in the Our City Photo Contest. As space is limited in any print product, I’d be remiss if I didn’t invite you to check out our website, simcoe.com, where you’ll find a wealth of news and information about our city and the surrounding area. Barrie is a wonderful place to live, work and play. It’s our hope you use Our City as a starting point, then get out there anddiscover the many amenities our home has to offer. Maybe you’ll learn something new.

Movies are the reel deal for Barrie Film Festival’s Claudine Benoit Festival director began volunteering for the organization in 1999

Chris Simon | chris.simon@simcoe.com

C

laudine Benoit has a fancy for film.

The director of the not-for-profit Barrie Film Festival has watched the organization grow steadily since she first began volunteering for it in 1999. It now hosts more than 150 public events and screenings each year. “The festival is multifaceted; plus, we’ve grown the programming,” she said, sitting in the front lobby of Dunlop Street’s historic Uptown Theater, rows of light bulbs running overhead across the ceiling. “We get (film festival) submissions from all over the world. A lot of our films initiate conversation. People always know the films are worth seeing. They may love it, they may not like it, but they’ll be talking about it.” A graphic designer by trade, she first lent assistance to the festival by helping with promotions.

20 | Our City 2017

On with the show: Barrie Film Festival’s Claudine Benoit. (Chris Simon/Metroland)

But in 2005, she was offered the job of director — a role she’s flourished in ever since. She also served as the festival’s board chair for a time. “I’m just passionate about movies,” she said. “There’s a certain excitement in seeing it all come together. A lot of our audience trusts us to curate. I love those opportunities where you can get your hands on a pre-release film before … everybody’s excited about it.” In addition to its annual 10-day marquee event, the festival now provides several programs throughout the year, including Summer Outdoor Film screenings, the socially-conscious Reel Stories mini-film festival and the monthly Screen One and Dinner & Movie initiatives. Almost everything you need to know about containers… The majority of steel containers sold, rented and modified by Secure Store are referred to as dry cargo containers. This is meant to indicate the types of items that should be placed in the containers when they are being shipped across seas or on rail. The two primary sizes for steel storage containers are 20’ and 40’ but are also available in 45’ and 53’ lengths. Due to our full customizations of shipping containers, Secure Store can offer it’s clients ANY SIZE steel shipping container from 8’ to 53’. Great for someone who has limitations in the area they can place their container. Special high cube containers are also available at Secure Store and are the same length but 1 foot higher (9'6") than the standard 8 foot 6 inch high containers. Clients that purchase containers and are considering placing oil, gas, medical waste, chemicals of other items not considered as dry cargo such as lawn mowers, engines, generators etc. run the risk of these items damaging or contaminating so that it cannot be used for other purposes. Once a container has been contaminated, it is VERY expensive to refurbish it. If you are storing furniture or other fine valuables in container, you certainly do not want them to smell or be stained with gas or oil. Secure Store rental containers for moving are in immaculate near mint condition to ensure that your valuables will not be contaminated. When you are considering purchasing a container, you should indicate whether you would like a new (furniture grade) or a used (construction grade) container.

Combine this security with the wind and water tight properties of all our moving containers to protect against the elements and you begin to recognize that Secure Store has the best solution for your next move. For clients that need more space for their “stuff”, Secure Store also offers 40’ long moving containers. Our goal and yours should be One container – One move. Your costs are the lowest when everything fits into a single container. For optimal positioning of our container on your property, just let us know whether you want the doors of the container to be first off the truck (doors to the back) or if it is more convenient if the doors were last off the truck (doors to the cab). It all depends on where you are situating your container, it’s up to you.

Sample of packed container Planning your move with Secure Store… About 2-3 weeks prior to your closing day, call Secure Store and order your moving container. We usually deliver same day or next day to most locations in Ontario from one of our locations in the province. Now have a party… Friends and family will be lining up to help you move :) or at least they’ll come for the free food. Pack your container. We love to see containers that have been well packed like the image on the left! This tightly packed container offers the added benefit of preventing movement of the contents during transportation. If you can’t fill your container (this is a rare situation), we have built-in solid steel j-hooks that allow you to tie down your partial load. If the doors can close, your container is ready to be moved.

Make your move with Secure and your personal move and save money! Ready for a Quote? Tilt loading of a 40’ container Our standard tilt trucks deliver and pick-up your container.Preparing for your move… Downsizing, upgrading, new job, whatever the reason may be, Secure Store wants to help you with your next move. Whether it is across town or across the country, we can help you move. Our containers are one of the most affordable ways to move your valuables from one location to another… and at a leisurely pace. Our standard 20 foot solid steel shipping container is our most popular moving container having the space to hold and move a standard 3 bedroom house. Our clients sleep well at night knowing that their valuables are locked behind a Secure Store solid steel container sitting on their property.

He’s an active dragon boat paddler and cyclist who believes in promoting the health of the planet. He also mentors young entrepreneurs, both through Georgian College and the smOffice program. Busch is also leading the charge of entrepreneurs who want the city to rent the second floor of the Barrie Transit terminal for an entrepreneurial hangout, dubbed the Sandbox. “It’s the simplest idea really — to bring together local entrepreneurs in various stages of their careers and watch as collaboration and innovation begins to happen,” he said. “We envision the Sandbox will be a place where engaging and dynamic conversations will take place, conversations that

will lead to new connections and opportunity. By being open to share our business experiences with other like-minded individuals it opens the door for success and productivity for all involved, right here in Barrie.” Busch founded Busch Systems in 1985, when he came to market with a lighter, more durable recycling bin and an inaugural order of 100,000 bins from the City of Hamilton. The company has since grown to include NetGain SEO (website development and specialization in search engine optimization), Armour Technologies (custom IT solutions and integrations) Big Dog Shred Bins (containers for the paper shredding industry) and California Container (wood products manufacturing). Busch has earned the Barrie Chamber of Commerce’s Arch Brown-inspired Entrepreneur of the Year Award twice. In 2015, Busch was also named Barrie’s Pan Games community torchbearer.

Jamie Massie believes in ‘compassionate capitalism’ President and co-founder of Georgian International moved to the area permanently in 1981 Chris Simon | chris.simon@simcoe.com

I

t’s hard to find a corner of Barrie that hasn’t, in some way, been positively affected by Jamie Massie.

The president and co-founder of Georgian International moved to the area permanently in 1981 after spending good parts of his childhood at his grandfather's cottage on Big Bay Point. Since then, he has helped create thousands of local jobs and is actively involved in fundraising initiatives for causes such as Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Barrie Public Library, McLaren Art Centre, Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation, and various sports programs. He was instrumental in the construction of the Barrie Molson Centre and the first hangar at Lake Simcoe Regional Airport and the founding of the Barrie Colts. His commitment to the community comes from his family; his father often asked Massie whether he was a ‘giver or taker’. “Lots of people write cheques,” he said. “The culture I grew up with is that people that can use their mind and talents to help the community, it drives the community forward. I’m passionate about what I do. It’s not a job for me.” Massie has earned Barrie Businessman of the Year, Canadian Business Magazine Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, Ontario Provincial Police Citation and Queen’s Golden Jubilee awards, as well as induction into the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame. He also received an honorary degree and a prestigious fellowship from Georgian College and is an honorary colonel at CFB Borden. Massie recently represented the city at 100th anniversary commemorations in Vimy Ridge, France. It was an emotional trip for Massie, whose grandfather served in the 48th Highlanders at the battle. “He was an amputee after the battle,” Massie said. “He and four other amputees built cottages at Big Bay Point.”

Eastview football teacher at home on the field Mark Welch started coaching junior teams 28 years ago. Janis Ramsay | jramsay@simcoe.com

E

astview Secondary School English teacher Mark Welch feels at home on the football field and has shared his love of the game with hundreds of students.

He started coaching junior teams 28 years ago and now coaches the Wildcats’ senior team, winning the championship in 2002, 2003 and 2005 with fellow coach Martin Carl. “I played football in high school and university and had great teachers who cared,” Welch said while sitting on the bleachers at his school. What he enjoys about the sport is players of all shapes and sizes can participate. “My coach picked me out of gym class and it changed my life,” he said. “I want to be one of those teachers who care.” Welch believes football is a safe haven for kids who don’t fit into other sports. “This is the only sport where your effort can go a long way,” he said. “It’s not resultsoriented. I don’t care if we’re 6 and 0 or 0 and 6. It’s about having fun and giving kids a chance to run around every day.” Through football, Welch has met lifelong friends he never would’ve connected with otherwise. “It’s the camaraderie, being on a big team is fun. We need different kinds of people to make it work.” And life lessons are learned on the field, such as teamwork and being accountable for your actions. “If you’re dedicated and passionate, you’re going to have success.” The same is true in life and Welch is a proud husband to Kelly, dad to Taylor and Sydney and a member of the Barrie Huronia Rotary Club.

Sara White, chair of Barrie’s annual Day of Giving, is ready to get to work (Sara Carson/Metroland)

ince childhood, Samantha White has been dedicated to giving back to the community. Her parents ingrained in her a charitable nature.

“They’ve always been huge supporters of the community and giving back locally,” she said. “I was always encouraged to volunteer my time, or give what I could, or donate in any way that I could.” She pursued her philanthropic inclination to a career as a fund development co-ordinator with Hospice Simcoe. And, in her free time, White volunteers with the Rotaract Club of Barrie. This year, White chaired Barrie’s annual Day of Giving on April 29. It’s hosted by the Rotaract Club of Barrie and the Kempenfelt Rotary Club.

28 | Our City 2017

On the Day of Giving, White’s team of more than 50 volunteers spent the day cleaning parks, helping those in need and lending a hand to nonprofit organizations. They tidied gardens and yards, cleaned eavestroughs, replaced light bulbs, helped with shopping and errands, completed small paint jobs, and cleaned windows. They also completed small tasks for residents in the community who needed a helping hand. “I know the organizations are incredibly appreciative of it, as well as the individuals,” she said, adding giving one’s time is just as valuable as cash donations. “It is really valued,” she said. “You’re putting in an effort to do it.”

Aylan Couchie found her love for art in Barrie Anishinaabe artist from Nipissing First Nation spent more than a decade in the city Chris Simon | chris.simon@simcoe.com

A

ylan Couchie will leave her mark on the Barrie landscape.

The Anishinaabe artist from Nipissing First Nation spent more than a decade in the city and she recently earned a Pratt Homes commission to erect the H.I. O Big Chiefs carbon steel structure atop The Gallery condominium project on Essa Road, once the building is completed later this year. “The community is supportive,” she said. “They’ve been really supportive of some of the things I’ve organized. That’s definitely helped.” Couchie’s piece features three large feathers which represent the Huron, Iroquois and Ojibwe First Nations tribes that lived, fought for and shaped Simcoe County. She owes a good amount of her success to the training received in Barrie. She enrolled in Georgian College’s Art and Design Fundamentals and Fine Arts Advanced programs, and became involved in the local arts community, helping to organize downtown art crawls. “There were already some people doing some really great things,” she said. “There was a good, strong core of Barrie community artists.” Much of Couchie’s earlier work sheds light on the hidden history of First Nations communities in Canada. “Sometimes people don’t know about residential schools,” she said. “Even having people asking about a piece and having the conversation is enlightening.” Couchie is a recipient of the inaugural Barbara Laronde prize from the Native Women in the Arts organization and a 2016 Premier’s Award (Recent Graduate category). She will participate in several upcoming exhibitions. For more information on Couchie, visit aylan-couchie.com. Barrie area artist Aylan Couchie (Submitted Photo)

ith each step, Zach Hofer will make life a little easier for Simcoe County youth who struggle with mental illness.

From Aug. 13 to Sept. 10, the 13-year-old will run, walk, bicycle, and scooter over 410-kilometres from his hometown of Barrie to Ottawa. The Zach Makes Tracks journey will raise money for Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s (RVH) child and youth mental-health services.

Zach was inspired to help after witnessing how mental illness affects those around him. “I really just don’t like seeing kids with mental health (challenges), so I decided to raise awareness and some funds for kids’ mental health,” he said. Zach is in Grade 7 at Codrington Public School in Barrie. The school has gone into lockdown in the past when a child has a mental breakdown. And his mom, Shelley, has been dealing with major depressive disorder since showing symptoms in early childhood. Zach’s journey begins at RVH on Aug. 13. On Day 1, he will be joined by Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman and MPP Patrick Brown. And MP Alex Nuttall will run with Zach the last two days. Shelley will be there every step of the way. “Despite the seriousness of the subject, we’re trying to keep it fun and light,” she said. Zach plans to cover 20 to 25 kilometres per day, with two days off each week to rest. He will arrive in Ottawa on Sept. 10 for World Suicide Prevention Day. Zach’s dream is to meet Justin Trudeau. You will see Zach and Shelley at various events around Barrie and area this summer. To learn more, or to donate online visit zachmakestracks.ca.

avid McCullough is the dedicated leader behind Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s most recent fundraising campaign.

McCullough has been campaign chair since late 2012 when the Hearts and Minds campaign unofficially launched and the balance was $0. Now, the fundraising campaign should hit its $25-million goal by year’s end, and the hospital’s advanced cardiac care centre is slated to open this fall. “It’s a very rewarding experience and it’s been a fun time to be part of it because we’ve had so many great announcements from cardiac care to mental health,” McCullough said. McCullough dedicates about eight to 10 hours a week to hospital volunteer work. And he said, giving back to the community is in his genes. His grandfather, his dad Bill McCullough and his uncle Rayner McCullough have always

34 | Our City 2017

David McCullough (Sara Carson/Metroland)

been heavily committed to the community and fundraising. “Helping the community, it’s just something you do,” McCullough said. And McCullough is quick to point out he works with a team. “You’re just one of many volunteers. And together it makes a great community having so many people involved,” he said. McCullough first volunteered at the hospital in 2005 with the I Believe campaign. He is current chair of The RVH Foundation. But his volunteer work doesn’t stop at the hospital: he will be president of the Rotary Club of Barrie from July 2017 to June 2018. He thanks Barrie and area for their continued generosity to local causes. “Barrie and this region are so committed to supporting, not just RVH, but all charities,” McCullough said.

The only thing holding me back was a lack of a Real Estate licence and a driver’s licence! usician Brett Caswell wants to hear you sing, whether you’re good at it or not.

With a group of friends, Caswell created Just Sing, Barrie’s Pop-Up Choir, a weekly singalong held at Donaleigh’s Irish Public House on Wednesday evenings. “It’s a joyful, joyful event. Everyone leaves and they feel on top of the world,” Caswell said. Caswell is a career musician and earns a living playing guitar in downtown Barrie. “I have a huge passion for music and I’ve never known anything but that, so I’ve just followed it and followed it and followed it,” he said. When asked to play guitar for Just Sing, Caswell was hesitant because he has never led a choir before.

36 | Our City 2017

Brett Caswell (Sara Carson/Metroland)

“I thought why not? Just no fear,” he said. And he wants Barrie and area residents to shed their own fears and give Just Sing a try. “Don’t be afraid. You don’t know until you get here how awesome it is,” Caswell said. The local event was inspired by Toronto’s popular Choir! Choir! Choir! And Caswell hopes Just Sing becomes so popular, they require a bigger venue. Currently, between 40 and 70 people attend each week. In the past, the group has enjoyed singing Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, and Everybody’s Talkin by Harry Nilsson. Just Sing, Barrie’s Pop-Up Choir, takes place Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donaleigh’s Irish Public House at 28 Dunlop St. E. in Barrie. The cost is $5 per person.

Joan Kennedy (Sara Carson/Metroland)

or more than 20 years, Joan Kennedy has shared her approachable personality, compassion and hugs with children and teens grieving the loss of a loved one.

Alongside children, Kennedy throws paint at the walls, lets loose on a punching bag, creates artwork, role plays, listens to music and plays with the dollhouse.

The Seasons Centre for Grieving Children’s program director has guided around 2,000 kids and their caregivers through the grief process since 1996.

“You let them lead and you do what they would like you to do. If they want you to play basketball, then you play basketball with them,” she said. “They usually talk more when they don’t have to talk.”

“When you see them down the road … and they chat with you, and you see they’re able to cope and they’re living a good life, that’s the most rewarding,” Kennedy said.

One of Kennedy’s good friends is a 26-year-old woman who went through the centre as a youth when her sister died.

The Seasons Centre has a homelike atmosphere where — with guidance from individuals like Kennedy — children, teens and their families grieve the death or life-threatening illness of a loved one.

“She’s working. She’s going to be a mom soon. Watching her go through a lot of grief, watching her grow — that’s a great story,” Kennedy said.

At the centre, children release their feelings physically.

“That’s really nice,” Kennedy said.

TALKING ABOUT AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER There are lots of different ways to talk about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We can talk about ASD medically, we can describe it through behaviour, we can talk about prevalence rates, we can talk about early detection and the importance of early evidence-based intervention, we can talk about the need for support for people with ASD across a lifespan, or we can talk about why advocacy is vital for building communities equipped to meet and support the changing needs of people on the spectrum. It’s easy to think about ASD as a diagnosis, however, we are not talking about a diagnosis. We are talking about a person with ASD. We are talking about a person with individual needs. We are talking about a person with loving family members. We are talking about a person who needs to be accepted and included in her or his community, we are talking about a person who is granted equal opportunity preparing for and succeeding in adulthood. ot every city can boast it was named after someone who saved a country.

yet, this city has the unique distinction of taking its name from Sir Robert Barrie, captain of HMS Dragon during the War of 1812, whose actions helped keep Canada out of the hands of the Americans. He took a leading role in the blockade of Chesapeake Bay, was commodore in charge of the British squadron, accepted the post of commissioner of the dockyard at Kingston, given a knighthood and promoted to rear admiral during a long and distinguished career in the service of the British Empire.

Barrie Market Building after 1877 (Smcoe County Archives)

Beautiful Barrie: The City and Its People describes the municipality as a gateway, land that has been transformed from forested wilderness to a “vibrant city.” The municipality gained recognition after Col. George Head became fascinated by the beauty of the area and observed the movement of aboriginals, explorers, fur traders and military personnel while waiting for news of his transfer following the War of 1812. “It was a portage landing place,” Su Murdoch, one of the authors of Beautiful Barrie, said. “That’s why people knew it was here. Memorial Square was the landing place.” Alexander Walker became the first permanent settler in 1825 and Barrie became the administrative centre of Simcoe District in 1843. The railway arrived about 10 years later.

By the time of Confederation, there were elements in place that would be recognized today. Some of the north side of Dunlop Street had been built, and the Five Points existed, as did many prominent downtown streets.

(Simcoe County Archives)

The Northern Advance and Barrie Examiner were the city’s major newspapers, factories produced axes, knives, steam wool carding and other products and Robert Simpson found success with his Simcoe Brewery. Sailboats were sketched from the shores of Kempenfelt Bay and commercial ice harvesting emerged as a large business on Lake Simcoe. Murdoch says the growing municipality was a “comfortable and promising place to live” by the mid-19th century.

“It was the county seat, it had the courthouse, the jail and the government officials,” she said. “Highend residential was being constructed, especially in the east end. It’s building its trades and retail. It’s the major market for the (local) agricultural community.”

By the time of Confederation, there were elements in place that would be recognized today.

(Simcoe County Archives)

Barrie has played host to important characters from Canada’s history, from world war heroes and participants in the 1837 Rebellion to Robert Gowan, who was trusted by the country’s first prime minister, John A. Macdonald. The prime minister also married Susan Agnes Bernard, the sister of his personal secretary, Barrie solicitor Hewitt Bernard. Over the years, it has hosted prime minister and premier visits, been a cottage area for prominent Torontonians and acted as home for athletes such as Red Storey, Jeff Buttle and Mike Gartner. The city became an industrial centre in the early 20th century, emerging as a city in 1959 and reaching historical levels of growth for the area over the past few decades. The city’s population eclipsed 141,000 last year, according to the 2016 census.

An afternoon or evening at Canvas and Cabernet is as much about stopping, focusing and relaxing as it is a about music, fine wine and art.The trendy new concept provides a fun and unique night out in Barrie for those who are experienced artists and many who have never picked up a paintbrush.

It's a two-hour break from the hurried rush of life into a spa-like experience that relaxes the mind and inspires creativity that may have been locked away or unrealized until now. Music, good food and wine add to the ambiance as budding artists receive instruction and create their first painting. “About halfway through the two-hour instructional paint class, you can actually see a shift,” she said. “Voices change, laughter changes and everyone seems to let the kid out. It’s really quite wonderful.”

In addition to beverages food, paint classes and parties for the non-experienced painter. Cyndi has added professional Karaoke singers and live music to the line up to entertain and add to this unique downtown atmosphere (see website for full details each month).

After hours of fun and transformation, you leave with a signed piece of art that is uniquely yours.

Canvas and Cabernet has something for everyone. Guests can enjoy the atmosphere and enjoy wine and charcuterie, with specialty breads, cured meats and cheese and chocolate, or take in the view from the new patio overlooking the water in downtown Barrie.

Fully licensed, Canvas and Cabernet is a Wine Lounge serving a wide variety of hand selected choices, as well as Traditional Old Fashioned Cocktails and a European style menu of charcuterie and specialty cheeses and chocolate. Featuring premium liquors, beer and non-alcoholic beverages, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Painting classes are evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 and Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30. The classes are vibrant, the sound system is professional and the music is inspiring. Classes are instructed by the featured artist in a step-by-step format giving plenty of time to visit, sip wine, chair dance and just have fun for $50 per person.

aturdays in the downtown are bustling and lively when spring arrives and the Barrie Farmers’ Market moves outside into the dazzling sunshine. Along with many friendly vendors and patrons, you’ll find colourful fruits and vegetables, locally-raised beef, pork, and chicken, local honey, pierogis, tempting treats like doughnuts and cupcakes, and much more. Regulars to the market will notice a huge change this year: the market has moved to Mulcaster and Collier streets just beside city hall. “I am very, very excited about this. It creates a fantastic atmosphere for the market and for our customers,” said market manager Patricia Lancia. “It will be a really fantastic meeting place for people on a Saturday morning.” The market welcomes 12 new vendors this year. Lancia said the market always get more vendor application requests than they can accommodate. The location makes it a great spot for business startups.

The farmers’ market has expanded its entertainment program, and you’ll see still past favourites including The Neema Children's Choir. “We’ll have a variety of performers rotating on a weekly basis to provide some variety for our customers,” Lancia said. GOLF SIMCOE BUILDS ON 2016 PILOT PROJECT

CDATA[Golf Ontario’s inaugural promotional campaign in Barrie and Simcoe County last year helped boost interest among youth and families. Now it’s time for round two as another season gets underway. First off the tee is a name change. The program is now called Golf Simcoe instead of Golf Barrie to reflect the number of courses from outside the city limits that participated last year, Golf Ontario community development co-ordinator Alexandra Warrick said. The pilot project, which brought 27 golf facilities together to increase the number of golfers in the area, created some impressive exposure, according to an annual report. Mike Kelly of Golf Ontario helped launch a pilot project in Barrie and area last year to promote the game, especially among younger players.

“I HAVE OPENED UP OUR JUNIOR DROP-IN PROGRAM TO AN ‘EVERYONE’ DROP-IN LEARN-TO-PLAY PROGRAM.

Barrie and Simcoe County golf course operators were pleased with the opportunity to collaborate and create more interest in the sport, especially among youth.

Barrie and area golf courses were able to attract more youths to the game during a pilot project initiated by Golf Ontario in 2016. The program continues this year.

THE 2016 NUMBERS TELL THE STORY: • 27 Golf Simcoe facilities • 27 sponsored schools • 5,400 kids exposed to golf • 70 community event/festival days attended • 8 Golf Simcoe facilities added new LEARN opportunities • 20 Golf Simcoe facilities involved in kids-golf-free month • 350 families participated in golf month • 22 new instructors trained to assist with LEARN programs.

“I have opened up our junior drop-in program to an 'everyone' drop-in learn-toplay program. It's been really popular,” said Stephanie Sherlock of Simoro Golf Club on Penetanguishine Road in Barrie. “I have made it very affordable at only $15 a person, which includes golf cart, a lesson, clubs and range balls, so it decreases the likelihood to not take up the game.” A large part of the initiative involved bringing the golf experience to schools to show youth how much fun a round of golf with friends and family can be. Jason Harris of Orr Lake Golf Club embraced the concept from the beginning and was integral player in making Golf Ontario’s foray into Simcoe a success. “I have been involved from the beginning stages of the development of the player pathway. Golf in Schools is an essential piece along the pathway and am interested to see how the pathway rolls out in 2017,” Harris said. D

o you really do free home repairs?

Yes, we do! In my personal experience my homes always looked their best when they were sold. There was handy man work that needed to take place to have them show their best. This just added to my already stressful schedule with trying to sell my home. I want to take away that stress and financial concern by adding value to my clients who use my services. I have a professional contractor as part of my team who goes into my client’s homes to aid in the preparation of getting your home ready to list. If I am working with a buying client, his time will be used in helping them ready their new home. My clients have absolutely loved this service.

“Service the old fashion way, under promise and over deliver.” This is a statement that not only represents

how I do business but who I am as a person. Whether it is your money or mine I have an expectation of how quality service should be provided. It is my goal to make sure I over-deliver for you!

eight par-4 holes and six par-3 holes, creating a challenging short game with water traps on 16 holes. Green fees at this 18-hole, par-70 course range from $25 to $38. Big Cedar Golf Course 1590 Houston Ave., Innisfil 705-456-2104 bigcedargolf.com This nine-hole course built in 1931 has small greens and large, mature trees lining most fairways. Bear Creek Golf Club 8545 County Rd. 56, Utopia 705-424-0241 bearcreekgolfing.com Each of the three nine-hole courses has its own character, with a selection of par-3, par-4 and par-5 holes to challenge even the best golfers. You can complete a round of 18 holes in just over four hours. Green fees

at this 27-hole course range from $49.99 to $69.99 Simoro Golf Links 1045 Penetanguishene Rd., Barrie 705-721-1822 simoro.ca Simoro plays just over 6,200 yards from the back tees. The front nine is fairly open and plays just like a true links course. The back nine requires accuracy off the tee. The course offers elevation changes, natural wetlands and tricky greens. Green fees at this 18-hole, pas-72 course range from $18.50 to $39.95.
