favourite jewellery store When people in Barrie are looking for a special birthday present, engagement or wedding rings, a superb anniversary gift or something beautiful for themselves, they go to Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers. Operating at the same downtown location since 1958, this full service jeweller has the area’s widest selection of diamonds, jewellery and luxury watches. “We do what others can’t including high tech laser welding,” says Adam Le Boeuf, the son of watchmaker and company founder Bill Le Boeuf. “We’re very happy that our community has again honoured us with this award. We have people say
that their grandfather bought their grandmother’s engagement ring here. It’s a tradition in downtown Barrie and we’re fiercely proud of that tradition.” For many years, Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers has specialized in higher quality estate jewellery and watches. Lovely new estate pieces are added almost daily to the store’s extensive estate collection. You’ll find superb brands such as Tiffany, Cartier, Rolex and Omega. If you have vintage jewellery that needs to be redesigned or remodelled, the store’s onsite gemologist, designers and goldsmiths are ready to create gorgeous custom pieces to enjoy for years. Metals that
are not reusable are recycled back into the jewellery business. The store also recuts and recycles broken diamonds. As a young teen, Adam started working at his father’s store part-time. After studying gemology in California, he was accredited as a Gemologist with the Gemological Institute of America. He began working at the store fulltime in 1989 as a Certified Gemologist. With his training and extensive experience, Adam can professionally assess the quality of a wide variety of gemstones from around the globe. He is now the proud owner of the 60-yearold business.

“I get to work with customers who are celebrating engagements, anniversaries, birthdays and other celebratory occasions,” says Adam. “It’s great to know they are buying something beautiful that someone may wear for 50 or 60 years. As well, we really have fun here. It’s not work but a lifestyle for us. Most of our staff have extensive jewellery business experience and are dedicated jewellery professionals.” Adam credits his father Bill with being the biggest inspiration in his life and work. When Bill purchased H.A. Sparham Jewellers in 1958, the first thing he did was change the name to Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers to make the family name synonymous with the quality and value the business represents. “My greatest joy is knowing with certainty I’ve provided the absolute best value for the products we provide for our customers,” says Adam.

favourite grocery store It’s not surprising that customers regard Zehrs as Barrie’s ‘community corner store’. After 23 years of enjoying the store’s welcoming atmosphere, friendly service and top quality products, customers continue to vote for Zehrs as their Favourite Grocery Store. Store Manager Dan Ward thanks all Zehrs customers for their ongoing support. “We see the same faces every week and know many of our customers by name,” says Dan. “We thank them for their loyalty to the business. For us, it’s all about the relationships we have with our customers. We are not another big box retailer. When customers come in, they know they are going to see smiling faces and always get what they need at a competitive price.” Zehrs’ staff regularly gives back to their community through activities like shoreline clean ups and donations to the OSPCA. “We donate all of the store’s product with dented cans & broken boxes to the Barrie

Over the past year, Zehrs has adapted to the online shopping trend with its Click and Collect website at www.zehrs.ca. The service is ideal for commuters who want to pre-order and pick up their groceries on the way home or anyone whose busy day doesn’t allow time for in-store shopping. Customers quickly and easily order their groceries on computer by selecting individual grocery items or browsing through product aisle, family member or brand categories. The Click and Collect service is a valued time saver according to feedback from Zehrs customers. “You order your groceries online and select a designated time slot for when
you want to pick them up,” explains Dan. “At the store, you call a phone number and say you’re picking up. Staff will run right out to your car with the order in any weather. There is a $5 fee. Our staff is trained to pick the best meat, produce, bakery and grocery items to fill online orders. Also, online customers reap the same benefits from flyer sale prices and coupons as in-store shoppers.” Though Zehrs cannot compete with some competitors’ budget pricing, customers come in for the superior level of attentive customer service and consistent selection of products. “When you come into our store, you’re going to find fresh products and be welcomed with a smile,” says Dan. “That’s how we set ourselves apart. If customers find a product they want at a competitor’s store and we do not stock it, I will try my hardest to get it onto our store’s shelves.”

favourite New Car Salesperson – Beth Freedman favourite Imported Car Dealership Barrie Nissan has been recognized this year with two Readers Choice Awards for Favourite Imported Car Dealership and for Beth Freedman as Favourite New Car Salesperson. “We have exceptionally high employee satisfaction and that leads to extremely high customer satisfaction,” says General Manager Doug Ross. “We truly work as a team. Beth is sincere, honest and works exceptionally hard. She sold 240 cars last year and deserves this award through both her volume of business and number of satisfied customers.” New this year at Barrie Nissan is Kicks, a compact crossover vehicle that starts at a very reasonable $17,995.00. Kicks has been a hit, with current demand outstripping supply. “I thought Kicks would be popular, but so far the demand is exceeding our expectations,” says Doug. “It’s incredible value for the money. There isn’t another manufacturer currently offering something with as much value for that price in the Canadian market.” Impressive safety improvements were added this year to many Nissan vehicles including the
Serving Barrie for over 49 years, this local business is a true success story. Qashqai and Rogue. The safety and security package includes Intelligent Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert systems. Improving vehicle value is a Nissan hallmark. “What I can’t stress enough about Nissan and the biggest thing we have going is value,” says Doug. “In every model we have in the market place, we either have the lowest price or offer the same amount of equipment for less cost. At the end of August, our sales were up 10 percent from a year ago. We finished last year up 16 percent and continue to grow.” Technicians in the dealership’s awardwinning service department constantly attend courses for training in new technology. Barrie Nissan ensures staff is well trained on Nissan products, not just well trained as technicians. Though dealership services can be perceived
as being more expensive, at Barrie Nissan they are not. For example, customers can get the least expensive synthetic oil change available at $59.95. “We know the vehicles better so we spend less time repairing them and use genuine Nissan parts, specific by model, from Nissan Canada,” says Doug. Nissan’s ultra comfortable zero gravity seats are installed in every model. The seats are designed to support the lower back and thighs on long trips or daily commutes. This type of value brings customers back year after year. “We have consistently been in the top 10 percent of Nissan dealers across Canada for customer satisfaction,” says Doug. “The biggest reason we’ve grown is our ability to keep returning customers happy and add new customers.” For more information about Barrie Nissan’s vehicles, please go to www.barrienissan.ca.

favourite watch repair
Serving Barrie for over 18 years, this local business is a true success story. Voted 10 years in a row Voldi’s Time Centre at the Kozlov Centre in Barrie is the city’s favourite place to bring watches and clocks for professional repairs. Owner Voldi Sucharzewski followed his father and grandfather into the craft of watchmaking. He opened his shop in 2000 to fill a local need for skilled watch repair, especially for highend timepieces like Cartier and Piaget.
“We combine hands-on skills with new technology,” says Voldi. “It gives us our edge. We can repair antique watches and clocks, and the most modern time pieces.” Voldi’s Time Centre also provides services for waterproof watches. Every waterproof watch has seals and gaskets that eventually deteriorate, lose the capacity to resist water and need to be replaced.

favourite Summer Camp | Child Care The YMCA has been in Barrie for over 100 years offering a wealth of programs and services tailored to meet the unique needs of children and families in our community. The YMCA is the largest provider of licensed child care programs in Simcoe/Muskoka. With nearly 80 licensed Child Care facilities across our region, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka provides exceptional programs focused on children between the ages of birth and twelve years of age. In Barrie, the Y has long-standing partnerships with the Simcoe County District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board that allow for highquality before and after school programming in 18 schools; the Y also operates 8 all-day Child Care Centres, including one located at Georgian College. Through a nationally recognized curriculum, the Y takes the holistic approach to the development of young children by supporting early literacy and healthy habits through “play.” Just as importantly, the YMCA focuses on making sure that children and parents alike feel welcomed and cared for – a home away from home. The YMCA integrates these early learning techniques into all YMCA children’s programs, such as summer camps, Y Kids and drop-inchild minding services. The YMCA’s mission
YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka – Supporting the Healthy Development of Children for Over 100 Years is to improve the health and well-being of even their youngest Y members in body, mind and spirit. “We understand how important it is for parents to trust that their children are in the hands of a team that cares as much as they do in an environment where they can learn, grow and thrive.” ~ Fiona Cascagnette, Vice President, Child Development and Family Support Programs at the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka YMCA Summer Camp – Helping Our Kids Stay Healthy and Active In addition to licensed child care and before & after school care, the YMCA also operates a wide variety of summer camps. As an accredited member of the Ontario Camps Association, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka day and overnight camps are a great way for children and teens to get outside and get active
while being surrounded with great role models and supportive friends. Y camps are a place where kids can stay active and learn invaluable life skills. Through programs that focus on the arts, sports, leadership and outdoor education, children learn how to build important life skills such as cooperation, listening, and problem solving. “Camp taught me to be a confident, strong and independent person. It taught me to respect the natural world, others and myself. And, it gave me the ability to lead others. Camp has had a profound influence on my life and I am so thankful for the YMCA.” ~Jake, YMCA Camp Kitchikewana alumni The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka child care and camp programs represent the best of what research and common sense tell us kids need – healthy beginnings, positive interaction with caring adults, age-appropriate learning activities, and plenty of time for fun and making friends. Helping kids and families thrive is at the heart of the YMCA. For more information about the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka or to find a location near you, please visit www.ymcaofsimcoemuskoka.ca.

favourite weight loss clinic WW has 57 years of success behind them and has continually evolved, based on science, research, and consumer feedback. What has remained consistent is the company’s purpose, which is to inspire healthy habits for real life. As many in Barrie can attest, the program works not only as it applies to successful weight-loss, but to help its members achieve overall wellness, too. CEO and President of The WW Group Co., Florine Mark, explains it this way:
“The approach WW takes is truly holistic: It’s what you put in your body, how you move your body, and how your mind supports your efforts. It means focusing on the small, achievable steps -- repeated over and over -- to help people create change that lasts. These can be changes in eating habits or activity habits or mindfulness habits. Each of our members defines “wellness” for themselves, and our role is to support and educate them and give them the tools they need to be successful.

favourite Fireplace Centre and BBQ Centre Serving Barrie since 1976, this local business is a true success story
Since 1976, Napoleon Home Comfort has grown from an ambitious start up in Barrie to a global success story. Napoleon’s top quality products, including grills, fireplaces, furnaces and air conditioning, are sold internationally in 48 countries and known for their durability, reliability and attractive designs. What people may not know is that these products are made right here in Barrie. “Our Prestige line of grills, all of our fireplaces and all of our furnace and air conditioners are proudly Canadian made here in Barrie,” says Senior Director, Retail Operations Napoleon Group of Companies Steve Gauci. “People are now realizing that we are the only Canadian manufacturer for residential air conditioners and furnaces. People love it when they find out. I can bring people to the Barrie factory and show them the equipment being made.” Though summer is over, grilling season goes on all year for bbq fans. There is a model of Napoleon grill to suit every backyard chef and camping cook. Gas grills include the Prestige, Lex, Rogues and Triumph series. For those who prefer charcoal fires, there is the Apollo Charcoal Grills. The always-popular 14 | Readers’ Choice Barrie 2018

Napoleon portable gas grills, including the TravelQ 285 and Pro 285 series, proved to be best sellers this summer. “We sold out of our portable grills this year for the first time,” says Steve. “I don’t know if there was an increase in the number of people camping, boating or cottaging, but all of a sudden the grills were gone.” Built-in back yard grills are popular in warmer climates like California and Texas, but the Canadian market is growing with our large selection of Oasis outdoor cabinets. A lot of Canadians enjoy being able to move their grills up to their doorways of their home to cook up steaks and burgers during the snowy season. Canadians do appreciate a large grill even if it isn’t built in. “People like bigger when it comes to grills,” says Steve. “Almost two years ago, we introduced blue lighting on the dash of the bbq behind all the knobs. The lights have been very popular with our customers. Last year, we introduced red lighting. When the gas valve is turned on, the knob turns red.
When you are looking at your grill from either inside or outside and you have left a burner on, the knob will be red. It’s a good safety feature. Next year, people will be able to choose from a variety of colours for their grills dash.” When it comes to fireplaces, more customers are choosing modern linear gas fireplaces for their new homes or to replace older homes’ masonry fireplaces. Napoleon’s linear fireplace models include the Luxuria, Vector See Thru and Acies See Thru series. The clean lines and modern contemporary look of the glass-fronted, rectangular fireplaces provide a chic ambiance and a comfortable glow to any room. “Even builders are starting to install more linear products,” explains Steve. “In the Fall of 2019 we will be launching an indoor/ outdoor fireplace. It is part of the Luxuria line. It is a linear fireplace that people will be able to install on the outside wall of their house, perhaps beside a patio or deck, and also be able to enjoy indoors in a living room,

dining area or any room where they would like a fireplace. It will be a weatherproof window in front of the fireplace and will be flush to the wall on the outside and a bump out on the inside.” Wood-burning fireplaces and stoves are consistently popular with Napoleon customers. The use of wood energy has been on the rise this year in Canada and other countries with northern climates. The High Country NZ5000, with its distinctive guillotine door, is a new Napoleon woodburning fireplace that has been gathering fans since being introduced. Both gas and wood fuelled stoves continue to be customer favourites. “People love stoves and they don’t have to be built in,” says Steve. “The stove is set in the corner and it’s ready to go. Both cast iron and traditional steel stoves seem to be equally popular.” Napoleons line of HVAC equipment is growing exponentially year over year.

favourite physiotherapist | physiotherapy clinic Resolution Physiotherapy & IMS Clinic is now a two-time winner of the Reader’s Choice Awards and has earned two Readers Choice Awards this year. Owner Mandi Hayes is Barrie’s Favourite Physiotherapist and Resolution Physiotherapy & IMS Clinic was voted Favourite Physiotherapy Clinic. “I am very proud of Resolution’s evolution since we opened almost nine years ago,” says clinic owner, Mandi, “Our team now includes seven incredible physiotherapists with extensive post-graduate education, including numerous who have Canada’s highest certification in Manual Physiotherapy and Sports Physiotherapy. Our growth has come mostly from client recommendations. We can’t thank our clients enough and promise we will always advance our skills with the goal of resolving your pain as quickly as possible.” Resolution now offers Pelvic Floor physiotherapy that includes urinary incontinence and pelvic pain treatment. 1 in 3 women experience pelvic floor dysfunction which can significantly impact quality of life. “It is so common for women to struggle with leakage during athletic activities but it’s not something that we discuss enough,” says Mandi. “Women need to know that

Elvie is wonderful because you can use it at home whenever you need it.” Another new treatment at Resolution is Shockwave, which helps to speed healing. Shockwave causes a vibration that goes deep into tissue, stimulating a series of healing responses. Shockwave breaks up adhesions, accelerates healing in tendons and bones, promotes collagen renewal, and helps tissue heal properly.
“I’m excited about Shock Wave because it kick-starts the healing process for people of all ages,” explains Mandi. “Many clinics charge more for Shockwave treatment but we include it in what we do without an additional fee because it is important to us that all of our clients have access to effective treatments.” Resolution is also well known for Concussion treatment. Resolution works closely with numerous local teams, offering pre-injury baselines and post-injury rehabilitation for concussions. “Although there is a lot of fear around concussions today, concussions are not scary if treated properly,” says Mandi. “Our physiotherapists have post-graduate concussion training as well as advanced training in upper neck dysfunction, allowing us to effectively treat concussion and neck related symptoms, getting athletes back to their sport as safely and rapidly as possible.” For more information about Resolution Physiotherapy & Gunn IMS, please visit www.resolutionclinic.com.

favourite CD/Music Store When people in Barrie want the best and latest music, they think of Sunrise Records. As a result, Sunrise Records has won its second Readers Choice Award as the city’s Favourite CD/Record Store. “We are always thankful for our hardworking staff, committed customers and fellow record shops for keeping the industry alive,” says Sunrise VicePresident of Sales and Operations, Chris Dipardo. Founded in 1977, Sunrise Records is known for supporting each store’s local music scene across Canada. Store managers add titles to their store’s catalogue based on local demand, and stock local
artists’ music. “We stay true to who we are, a music store first whether it be CDs, LPs, cassettes, Walkmans, record players or music apparel,” says Chris. “We pride ourselves on staying very current with hot new movies hitting the screen. The Soundtrack to “A Star Is Born” is the most popular right now. The records are flying off the shelf.” says Gillian, manager of the Bayfield Mall store. favourite collision repair Zenetec Collision, Barrie’s favourite place for fast, professional vehicle body repair, has opened a second location at 499 Veterans Drive in south Barrie. The new 28,000 sq. ft. facility joins the family owned and operated company’s original shop at 247 Tiffin Street. Both locations provide skilled auto body repair. However, 10,000 sq. ft. at the new location is for a state-of-theart Car Wash system that will open this fall. “The car wash can clean about 175 vehicles per hour,” says General Manger William Monteith, noting there will be a club membership for the Zenetec Car Wash. “There are interior cleaning services and 15 free vacuums outside for those wanting to clean their vehicle’s interior themselves. The idea is that customers should never have a line up and will be convenient for customers any time of the day.” The car wash system collects rainwater off of the roof, stores it in tanks and

Once used, the water is re-collected and put through a smaller version of the same type of water treatment plant used by municipalities. “We hope to be 100 percent water sufficient without using water from the city,” says William. Zenetec Collision Centre is Barrie’s only BMW, Toyota, Honda and Nissan certified repair centre. Service technicians have travelled to the U.S. for this specialized training. Some technicians are BMW experts, while all staff are trained and certified to work on Honda, Nissan and Toyota vehicles. “Our staff has gone through extensive training and auditing by the manufacturers themselves,” explains
William. “We have access to all factory specifications and factory repair instructions on how the manufacturer wants the vehicles fixed. Zenetec Collision has more certifications than all other local body shops put together. To my knowledge, there is no other shop in Barrie with these certifications specific by manufacturer. During the past 12 months, we have invested a lot into factory certified training and equipment.” Zenetec’s new location has been extremely busy thanks to word of mouth by satisfied customers. The Monteith family appreciates their customers’ loyalty and look forward to welcoming new customers. “We have a very high customer return rate and are grateful for their trust,” says William. “We would like to thank our employees for all the hard work they put into customer service and our customers who took time to vote for us and trust us with their cars.”

favourite music store Musical Success: Technology or Talent? At Music Pro, we’ve concluded technology has been a great enabler for musicians. Digital technology in percussion, keyboards and recording equipment plus the advances in blue tooth and communication between devices and people make it easier to learn and possible to jam or record with someone down the street or in another country. Our role is to provide the equipment and advice our musician friends need to move forward toward their musical goals whether it’s a flute for a band student, a PA for a teen rock band starting to get gigs or a digital grand
piano as an anniversary gift. On a given day, we may help a fulltime circuit musician adding to their collection and later get the satisfaction of putting a well-made acoustic guitar in the hands of a first-timer. Music Pro is more than a well stocked, well staffed store of instruments and equipment. Our rentals let people try before they buy. The fast growing audio/video department has installed first class PA and large screens in schools, churches, community centres and sports venues throughout the province.

favourite Cosmetic Clinic | Laser Hair Removal Clinic At Martin’s Rejuvenation Centre, owner Dr. Deborah Martin and her professional staff of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and technicians use the latest Medical Aesthetics treatments, including Botox, Fillers, Lasers, Microneedling, PRP and more to assist women and men in looking and feeling their best. 2018 marked the Centre’s 16th year in Barrie. This year, the team at Martin’s has introduced two ground-breaking age reversing skin treatments for their clients. “I am extremely excited about the Fotona Laser,” says founder Dr. Deborah Martin. “It is effective in a remarkable variety of treatments.” The Fotona laser painlessly applies heat to the skin which stimulates collagen in the dermis. As a result, the skin contracts and effectively tightens the tissue of the face which reverses the natural process involving loosening of skin. Three treatments are required. The patient can expect to continue to age backwards after the initial treatments. “Eventually, you pick up normal aging again, but the laser has retraced your steps and effectively wound back the clock”, explains Dr. Martin. “Anyone over the age of 35 would benefit from this treatment”. The same technology that painlessly tightens loose skin on the face and can also tighten the
Serving Barrie for over 16 years, this local business is a true success story. soft tissues in and around the vagina which helps with urinary incontinence. In addition, the same mechanism works to improve snoring by tightening the back of the throat. The second new and incredible age reversing skin treatment at Martin’s Rejuvenation is Micro Needling with PRP (platelet rich plasma). “This treatment is known as the ‘Vampire facelift’ because a patient’s own blood is used. First, a nurse draws blood and puts the tube in a centrifuge machine,” says Dr. Martin. “Spinning blood divides it into red and white parts. The red is discarded. The white part is rich in platelets, proteins and growth factors. This white part of the blood is known as PRP (platelet rich plasma).” Micro Needling is like aerating your lawn. In this treatment, small holes or micro-channels are painlessly made over the entire face. The PRP is absorbed through these micro-channels
which assists in diminishing fine lines, shrinking pore size and creating an overall brighter looking skin surface. “Most of our clients notice a benefit after one treatment,” says Dr. Martin. “but the change is remarkable after three treatments. It’s very exciting.” The team at Martin’s prides itself on helping clients feel wonderful without looking like that they have had anything “done”. With a growing customer base, Dr. Martin attributes her clinic’s popularity to her team’s focus on the GOOD in everyone. “We bring a person’s positive features forward and don’t focus on the negative,” she says. “I think women, in particular spend too much time criticizing themselves. We do the opposite - We build you up.”

favourite Private School Every day before classes start at Kempenfelt Bay School in Innisfil, school Head Christopher White stands out front and welcomes every student, parent, teacher, staff member and anyone else who comes by. Such personalized attention is a hallmark of the education offered at this acclaimed independent co-educational elementary school. “We are extremely accessible,” says White, who started at the school when its doors opened Labour Day weekend in 2017. The school first opened in Barrie in 1999. “That level of communication and connectedness is what builds our community. Based on feedback, Kempenfelt Bay is best known for the strength of our academic program and its community mindedness. With current classes ranging in size from the low-teens for younger children to 20 in the Middle School, teachers become familiar with every student’s learning style and tailor their approach to cover them all. “Some are comfortable with auditory learning while others are more visual or tactile. I
“Teachers and staff strive to make students feel safe, trusted and not judged.“ asked my grade eight class, ‘If I could teach you only one way, what would you want me to do?’ Knowing their answers, I can teach the way they absorb information best. What individualization means is we get to know the method that works best for building a relationship and connecting with each student.” Teachers and staff strive to make students feel safe, trusted and not judged. This encourages students to explore, take a risk and make mistakes without fear of being made to feel inadequate from teachers or fellow students. “Even quieter students feel they are in a safe place because their peers are not going to respond unkindly and the teacher will not judge if an answer isn’t bang on,” explains White. “Knowing this, they will rise. Much of our students’ respect for each other comes
from the school’s annual theme. The annual theme is not about academics, but character. This year the theme is diversity, which can be defined in many ways. We also have monthly sub-themes. ‘Courage’ is always the sub-theme in September. Others will be respect and unity. We show students what those look like. Then when they might feel like chuckling at an answer, they remember we are here together and that’s not the right thing to do.” Academic specialists at Kempenfelt Bay School teach art, music, physical education and French to all students, including kindergarteners. White believes a school’s success depends on its educators. “I think a quality educational journey depends on the adult in the room,” says White. “We go through a rigorous hiring process because we know the most important thing is to get the quality of that trusted adult as right as possible. If teachers are attending to both the academic and personal, and the social and emotional growth of their students, the school is on the path to greatness.”

favourite decorative cake Inspired to create the unexpected You want a wedding cake that looks like the Muskoka birch stump where you and your beloved carved your initials. Bring your idea to Cakes By Design in Barrie and they will make your dream cake a reality. Baker and owner Jennifer Mayrl and her staff design, create and bake between 60 and 100 stunning custom cakes weekly for occasions ranging from hip replacements to anniversaries. Gender reveal cakes with pink or blue interiors are popular at baby showers. “People come to us for a little fun,” says Jennifer, who fell in love with cake decorating at a part-time job as a teen. “If you can dream it,we can bake it.”At the 14-year-old company, every cake must taste as fabulous as it looks and only cakes Mayrl would be proud to serve are made. Customers can also pick up ready-to-go cakes, cupcakes, decorated sugar cookies and more! What led you down the custom cake path? When I was in high school, I got a part-time job at a custom cake shop in Richmond Hill. I was hired to stock shelves, but almost instantly I was hooked on cake decorating. I worked there for about 10 years, right through university studying kinesiology. I learned everything on-
Serving Barrie for over 14 years, this delicious bakery is inspired to create the unexpected. site, and knew I wanted to do this for a living. What are the latest trends in cakes? We’ve been doing a ton of gender-reveal cakes. When a couple is having a baby, they bring in the ultrasound that indicates the gender and we make the inside of the cake blue or pink and that’s how everyone finds out whether the baby is a boy or a girl. Other trends include naked cakes- where the icing gets scraped off and the cakes are decorated with fruit and flowers. What are some of your craziest commissions? We did a cake for a plumber with a roll of toilet paper on it and the words “Holy Crap, it’s your birthday” written on it. We also do lots of hip bone- shaped cakes to celebrate replacement surgery and diaper- shaped ones for baby showers. What’s your cake-making philosophy? It’s twofold. I want every cake to taste as good as it looks. And second, we only make cakes that I would be proud to serve.
Where do you find inspiration? Our customers inspire us! They will find something on social media, bring it in, and we will go from there. Other than that, we are constantly keeping on top of the latest trends. Beyond custom orders, what’s on offer at the shop for walk-in customers? We always have cupcakes, ready-to-go cakes, plenty of decorated sugar cookies and more. finally, What’s the sweetest part of working in the bakery business? We all smell like vanilla and cake all the time, so that’s pretty sweet!

nytime Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman gets involved in such a campaign, one of the most frequent things he hears from people is that they simply didn’t know a business or product existed locally. “I think one of the great things about Shop Local efforts is they really do help to raise the profile of local businesses for things that people may otherwise be going out of town for or didn’t realize the quality that is available locally,” he said. “It’s an economic thing because we are trying to keep dollars in our community and support local merchants, but I think as well it can be a broader marketing effort where we raise the profile of local business.” The City of Barrie has an entire department - Invest Barrie - dedicated to growing they the municipality’s economy, he noted, adding one part
of that department is the Business Attraction, Retention and Expansion side. “We try to make sure companies that are here stay here and are able to keep growing here. If there is some sort of challenge to them staying here we work to help address that,” he explained, adding more of the efforts are focused on the attraction and expansion of business to the area. “We go to trade shows, we advertise the city through a whole channel of different marketing materials to those wanting to start companies or open a new location in Barrie. We work closely with site selectors and have a network of real estate agents in the industrial, commercial and institutional space whose job is to try to fill those spaces. It’s an ongoing effort and there isn’t a day that goes by that our staff isn’t
talking to one or more of those agents or site selectors to how our city can help bring business here.” Yet another area, which Lehman notes has receive a lot more focus in recent years, revolves around business expansion. “We want to make sure if you’re starting a business here or you’re a small company here that you have all of the things in our community that’s needed to help them grow,” he said. “You need a workforce that has the skills you need, you need capital and access to investment in order to grow your business and some of that is connecting with banks and credit unions and some of that is government and we assist with that.” Much of the city’s efforts would not be possible without partnerships, he continued, crediting Georgian College’s

Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre, The Ontario Centre for Excellence, and numerous private companies. “We are trying to expand our reach. We are three or four people; they’re three or four people but together we are a coordinated effort to try to make sure businesses have the ecosystem they need to scale here. We had a lot of resources to start a business, but if you wanted to go quickly from five people to 50 there were less resources for that stage.” One of Lehman’s favourite parts of the job, he said, is pitching Barrie as a location to new businesses. “What I often talk about is two fold: lower turnover because we have a very stable workforce and a very high quality of life. Every municipality in the world says that … but the thing we find here — and we actually have data on this from some of our businesses that have relocated from the GTA - is they actually have had lower turnover because people put roots down in Barrie. They buy a house, their kids go to school and play sports, and that is a real strength.” Barrie is also one of the youngest cities in the country, he added. “We have one of the youngest average ages as a statistic — and it’s driven by people in their 30s and 40s who have young kids. The great thing about that demographic is that’s the prime age for business formation. That can be anything from a new store to a new manufacturer,” he said. “When we are competing against the GTA - where things can be a lot more transient or where relationships don’t last as long and the quality of living isn’t nearly as great … it’s a pretty compelling pitch.”

We tell people the truth with kindness and give them the right recommendations. Being honest lets people know that even if they hear something they didn’t expect, something can be done.” McLeod Vision offers a wide range of eye care services and eyewear solutions. New brands of contacts, glasses and sunglasses are always arriving at the store constantly. A wide selection of great quality frames lets customers pick a style that suits them best. “We are known for treating everyone like family,” says Adam. “We always try to create a welcoming and open environment that makes people feel at ease and able to ask or say anything that is concerning them about their eyesight.” Because anyone 19 and younger or 65-yearsold and older is covered by OHIP for yearly eye
“I would like to thank all of our patients and customers who nominated and voted for us,” says Adam, who opened his combined clinic and store five years ago. exams, Adam recommends they come in for an annual check up. There are many eye issues that are asymptomatic and can go unnoticed. Some patients also seek preventative treatment due to a family history of eye disease. “We definitely recommend being proactive,” says Adam. “Sometimes people are worried they have a problem and want to be reassured.” Children’s vision care is an important part of the services at McLeod Vision, and a passion of Dr. McLeod’s. “Children should at the very least have their eyes checked before they start school,” says Adam. “Kids assume that how they see is how they are supposed to see because they don’t know any differently. Children who have learning issues or struggle with reading may have good vision but issues with the way their
eyes work together. Having your child’s eyes checked at the start of schooling can rule out any potential vision issues.” For adults, eye diseases often occur without symptoms. Through regular exams, these diseases can be caught early before any concerns or issues appear. Some health conditions in the body can be discovered through an examination of the eyes’ blood vessels. “From the blood vessels in the eyes, we can tell if someone has high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes,” explains Adam. “There are a lot of signs we see inside the eye that can be indicative of one of those things happening. Also, the eyes monitor improvements in health. Eye exams are important for more than just eye health.”

favourite mattress store Mike and Krista Rudkins, owners of Mike The Mattress Guy in Barrie, have two goals. They want to sell high quality mattresses and furniture at affordable prices, and support the local community by giving back. Those goals have earned them the 2018 Readers Choice Award for Favourite Mattress Store. “We’d like to thank all the people in our community and Simcoe County who have supported us,” says Mike, who has been at 555 Mapleview Drive West for eight years. “The business has grown from me alone, then just the two of us to a staff of ten employees. That has been due to community response and it’s been wonderful. We couldn’t have done it without our customers.” Mike the Mattress Guy is best known for Canadian made mattresses and boxsprings. “All of our mattresses are entirely Canadian made including the springs, foam and fabric,” says Mike. “They are assembled in Toronto. The quality has always been great and we are very happy with our supplier.” The store also has a great reputation for custom mattresses for boats, dog beds, campers, trailers, antique beds and more.
Canadian made & always Free Delivery with Food Bank Donation Sleep”Bedder” with Mike! Lots of customers also purchase headboards, beds and entire bedroom suites. Stylish dressers, chests and bedside side tables are displayed in the 3,500 sq. ft. showroom. Outstanding living room, dining room and kitchen furniture are also featured at Mike The Mattress Guy. “Canadian made sofas and sectionals are extremely popular-especially at the prices we offer. Both of our suppliers offer tons of colour and style options so customers have a great time making their selection.” One of their suppliers, Crate Furniture Manufacturing in Chesley, Ontario makes beautiful solid wood furniture. “Crate bunks and beds are built to last with a lifetime warranty and lots of selection and great prices. They also make kitchen and living room
furniture that have been very popular.” When asked about his company’s catchy name, Mike says he and Krista liked from it the start. The name reflects the store’s friendly and relaxed atmosphere. “We are child and dog friendly,” he says with a smile. “People bring their children and they have a lot of fun here. The staff all love kids and animals.” Mike credits his company’s success to customer service and giving back to the community. “We don’t charge for delivery,” he says. “We ask for a bag of groceries for the food bank or a contribution to the Women and Children’s Shelter in Barrie. We’ve been doing this since we opened. It feels good for us and our customers love doing it.”

favourite Hot Tub Whether you need a hot tub for your home or cottage, a portable hot tub or a wood fired grill to cook amazing meals, Georgian Hot Tubs has what you need. “We try to do everything a little differently,” says Hans Kissmann of his family owned and operated company. “I won’t sell you what I think you need, but what you want. We spend significant time making sure you choose what is right for you. Is your hot tub the new family gathering spot? Let me help you discover the right model.” As an authorized Hydropool dealer and authorized retailer for the portable Softub line of hot tubs, Georgian Hot Tubs is all about finding customers the right hot tub size and features at the right price. Self-cleaning Hydropool hot tubs are very popular with people who want extremely clean water, use their tubs socially or have young children. “Hydropool put a very large skimmer and a base floor vacuum in the tub,” explains Kissmann. “All heavy grit on the bottom is sucked away. Because of the pressurized filtration system, you do less work, use less energy and need fewer chemicals. You’ll have
“Once a person has a Softub, that’s all they ever want,” says Kissmann. “They are the epitome of portability, weighing between 50 and 75 lbs.” years of savings and more free time.” Since arriving last year, the portable Softub line has developed a cult following. “Once a person has a Softub, that’s all they ever want,” says Kissmann. “They are the epitome of portability, weighing between 50 and 75 lbs.” The wood burning Traeger Grills have made converts among gas and charcoal bbq fans. Flames from the wood pellet fire never touch the food, eliminating greasy grills and charred food. “There is a heat deflector inside so fire doesn’t touch your food,” explains Kissmann. “An auger automatically feeds natural wood pellets into the fire pot from the hopper. Literally, it is a matter of turning on your grill and walking away while your meal cooks.”
Besides cooking perfect burgers, the Traeger Grill bakes bread and cookies, reheats food, cooks jerky, fries bacon and more. “Bacon made indoors is messy but the Traeger Grill drains all the grease away,” says Kissmann. “Bacon cooks thoroughly and is by far the best you’ll ever taste. If I get anyone to try these grills, they never go back to a gas grill. I always bet a case of beer that after using the Traeger Grill for six months, they will throw their gas grill away. I haven’t lost a case of beer yet.” A valuable service offered by Georgian Hot Tubs is a hot tub inspection for homebuyers. It can save new homeowners expense and stress. “I don’t know how often someone has bought a house and was told by the homeowner, for whatever reason, that the hot tub worked perfectly,” Kissmann says. “They move in and guess what’s not working perfectly. If you are having a home inspection, have your hot tub inspected by one of our hot tub professionals.”

We don’t want them to be afraid to come to the hospital. A client said her pets love to come here because they don’t remember the bad things, only the love.” Rehabilitation for dogs and cats is practiced by Dr. Lindsey Rogers, a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist. favourite interior decorator Since 1980, Sue Kay has used colour to make clients’ homes feel cosy and peaceful. Sue has worked through the Allandale Decorating Centre for 25 years. “I thank our clients and Allandale Decorating Centre associates for this award,” says Sue, whose colour selection grew this year when Allandale became a Benjamin Moore Store of the Future. “They treat my clients with the utmost respect.” Sue travels to clients’ homes to personally advise them on interior and exterior colours. It’s important for her to see how colours react with
natural light and light fixtures in the house. She notes current interior décor trends include unique lighting fixtures, light colour palettes and bringing the outdoors inside. “People are leaning towards greige, a warm mix of grey and beige,” says Sue. “We see greige with white and pops of colour plus raw elements like clay pots. Another trending colour is Lamb’s Ear, a soft velvety green with a gentler feel.” Associates at Allandale Decorating Centre are available everyday to help clients embrace their personal style. Downtown is
the heart and soul of any city and Barrie is no different
T
hat is especially true since the city’s new Meridian Place and Memorial Square opened to the public this summer, noted Craig Stevens, managing director, Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA). The space officially opened to the public Canada Day weekend to a great response and attendance and has since seen approximately 30,000 visitors to the square through a variety of different programming, including an outdoor movie series, live music as well as ongoing festivals. “It fit in perfectly and It’s been well received,” he said, adding the square has also been used for a number of unprogrammed activities from yoga and fitness classes to dance performances . “For the last couple of years we have looked at drawings and renderings, and listened to design theories about what to place where … and then when you build it you want to see if all those things come to fruition and I think that has been better than expected.”

BAR RC V1 OCT25_68pgs.indd 36
2018-10-19 11:17 AM
The way the space was designed has ultimately done two things: enhanced the historical aspects of the site and provided a comfortable outdoor space for people to enjoy. “When you see an audience at one of the movies and they’re literally treating it like it is their living room; or you’re at a live music performance people just feel comfortable dancing … a lot of times you wouldn’t think of public spaces as being comfortable of living room like (so) it’s been great to see.” The plan is to continue programming throughout the winter, he noted, adding with this type of public space there is also the opportunity for an economic spinoff, which in turn will help ensure the city’s main street stays vibrant and prosperous. “Whether it’s the 30,000 visits … tourism tracking numbers say an average visiter spends $40 on each visit … so you can do the math and it starts to become big numbers,” he said, adding there is also spinoff when looking at the development of
the buildings and the quality of the tenants going in to the buildings in the vicinity of such a space. “As businesses come and go, that in stride provides an opportunity. I think the businesses that are interested in the downtown are coming in with a strong business plan, a strong brand presentation and are making that upfront investment to be successful. While new blood in downtown Barrie is important, stores that have been the mainstays are extremely important to the success of the area as well and serve as anchors to the downtown. “What’s been great is that the succession of those businesses … they’ve taken the same approach but have also taken the initiative to update and refresh on an ongoing basis. They’re moving along with the times. Even the businesses that have opened up in the last couple of years … are really taking a full 360-perspective of business and how to take every opportunity available to them.” As for the future of Barrie’s downtown
core, Stevens foresees continued growth and focus on the area. “There are a lot of great investments lining up, whether it’s our public farmers market potential build where the old train station is or the streetscape project that would see Dunlop Street’s surface completely change to more of a pedestrian focused venue. We are connecting the East and west and connecting Meridian Square with the potential Farmers Market.” Stevens also sees an increase in residential areas in the downtown as well as a natural expansion around the lakeshore. “I think it was Malcolm Gladwell that said. “If you look at most overnight success, they’re 10 years in the making”. There have been a lot of people working behind the scenes over the last decade or more. We have had more presented in terms of ideas and opportunities than we ever had … and the momentum we have is a huge opportunity for us right now.”

ith three local Rotary Clubs, it’s not hard to find local business leaders in and around Barrie willing to step up and lend a helping
hand. Barrie-Huronia Rotary Club is one of those organizations, which undertakes multiple projects and fundraisers each year benefitting the city and its residents, noted Barrie-spokesperson Connie Speigl. “It’s important to be involved because we are a resource for making our community better. Our involvement with others in Barrie and even around the world also benefits our members. If we are involved we gain more relationships, and can positively impact things in the world that need fixing,” she said, noting the Barrie-Huronia Rotary Club currently boasts approximately 90 members currently, with many new members joining through its recently established Satellite Club. From the ongoing Rotary Cash Calendar and the Hearts and Minds Gala benefiting Royal Victoria Hospital’s Cardiac centre and youth mental health to its annual Lobsterfest and Barrie Fall Fishing Festival, the club is constantly finding ways to improve the
lives of people both locally and abroad. “Our International Committee helps to fund Rotary projects around the world every year,” she explained, noting last year the club assisted with funding a pediatric neurology unit at hospital in India, providing aide to people in Haiti, as well as donations to Shelter Box - an organization that provides tents/ supplies to people left homeless by natural disasters. “Rotary is a great organization concerned with local issues, world issues/peace and while doing the work of Rotary you meet people with the same goals and make wonderful friends.” From Kempenfest to the long-running Rotary Fun Run/Walk The Rotary Club of Barrie raises hundreds of thousands of dollars or the community each year, noted club president Dan Mallory. “We are all volunteers and we are not looking for recognition or patting ourselves on the back so we really don’t go out there and tell people what we’ve done, but we raise upwards of $200,000 just in our club alone every year and give it all away,” he said. “This community has provided us with our successes in business ventures and this is our way

Family is important, business is important and providing help for others is part of that balance too.” Ashley Arnold is a member of the Kempenfelt Rotary Club, and said members come together striving to make a positive and lasting impact locally and internationally. Locally, she noted, the club supports initiatives that enhance the community and contribute to local charities and services. “This ensures we do not function in isolation but are an active part of the community with projects that relevant and effective,” she said. “Our club is also part of a global network of 1.2 million Rotarians who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” With approximately 88 members, Arnold noted The Kempenfelt Rotary Club is proud to be one of the fastest growing clubs in the Rotary District. “Barrie is a wonderful place to live and work. favourite radio station 107.5 KOOL FM Some companies claim their staff is like family but at 107.5 KOOL FM in Barrie, it’s true. “The turn over for this company is non-existent,” says Program Director Matt Cacchione. “We have a good group here. Dale has been on the air since Kool’s launch. Lisa has been here 11 years. Charlie joined the team later but moved her family up from Toronto. Darryl cut his teeth as an intern and has been our drive guy for nine years.” Morning team Dale & Charlie get listeners, and each other, laughing at the crack of dawn. Both love life in Barrie and are often identified off air by listeners. “I find most people seem to know me on a Sunday morning, when I’m looking my best, at the local Zehr’s,” says Charlie sarcastically. “We know our bosses and all the radio announcers support one another. We thank Barrie and everyone for listening and we hope you’ll continue to listen longer.” “The passion you hear from us and right through the day is real because it comes from all being in this together,” adds Dale. “Being one big family is not just a slogan on a whiteboard here.” Music Director and Weekend Announcer
Some companies claim their staff is like family but at 107.5 KOOL FM in Barrie, it’s true. Jocelyn Martin chooses the music for KOOL FM’s Hot Adult Contemporary line up. “Scheduling a day of music is based on things like tempo, texture of the songs, female and male artists,” says Jocelyn. “You want a nice mix and flow with upbeat songs in the morning and on the drive home. You consider what listeners are doing and how they listen.” Beeton native Lisa Morgan is Kool’s midday announcer and does the Top 20 KOOL FM Count Down on the weekends. “I get to be a part of people’s lives in a special way like when the father of three girls called me on the way to the hospital for the birth of his fourth daughter,” says Lisa. “He wanted to request the John Mayer song. Our listeners know they can get a hold of me during their day.” From 7 p.m. to midnight during the week, Katie talks to evening listeners. She started at the station as a co-op student in high
school. Now her voice is recognized at drivethroughs. Having this slot lets Katie hang out with her young son and have time for a nap before her show. “Radio is personal without being up close and personal, but you can definitely touch someone’s life,” says Katie. Afternoon drive host Darryl winds down people’s workday and helps them get home. He came to KOOL FM in 2005 and is the announcer for the Barrie Colts. “Many of us have been here for a number of years because we love it,” says Darryl. “Behind the scenes, we’re like a family in the way we joke together and work as a team. It’s a fun place. Doug Bingley, the owner is a great guy. He’s very appreciative of the kind of work we do.” 107.5 KOOL FM voted Barrie’s Favourite Radio Station for 3 years in a row, is a locally owned and operated radio station known as Barrie’s Best Mix, playing all the best hits from the 90’s to today. favourite ribs If you want the best ribs in Barrie, you’ve got to head for Big Bone BBQ & Wicked Wings. The casual restaurant’s Memphis-style bbq features a dry rub that’s topped with bbq sauce. “We have pulled pork, smoked ribs, smoked wings and beef brisket,” says General Manager Adrien Rehmund. “Our smoked wings are a speciality at Big Bone BBQ. No one else in the Barrie area makes them because no one else has a smoke house like ours. Smoked wings are marinated for 12 to 24 hours and then put in our smoker. We smoke them for a few hours and they come out really nice and juicy. We add bbq sauce and finish them off on the bbq.” Barrie’s Big Bone BBQ has served tasty snacks and amazing meals to bbq fans for the last eight years. Adrien became the restaurant’s general manager at the start of 2018 and has been busily enjoying himself ever since. “I’d like to thank all the people who voted for us for this award, my family and the owner of the company,” says Adrien. “I would also like to thank Natasha and Dylan, two staff members who have been
Winners of over 50 BBQ Championships for ribs, chicken & sauces across Ontario! nothing but helpful since I came here.” The house speciality is the popular Pulled Pork Sandwich. Slow smoked pork is smothered in their signature bbq sauce and served with fries, beans and slaw. As well as the best bbq, the Bone also serves Pit Master Poutine. The authentic Montreal- style poutine gets a Big Bone twist with flavours like Southwest with salsa and nacho chips, Bacon Cheese Burger with smoked bacon, and The Texan with beef brisket. Families love the Piglet menu that features kid-sized portions of ribs, wings, chicken fingers and burgers. New menu items include the Vegetarian Nightmare burger, a grilled all veggie burger topped with provolone cheese and sautéed onions and peppers. The new Brisket Cheese Steak sandwich has become an instant menu classic. Melted provolone cheese and
sautéed peppers and onions add tang to the Bone’s famous brisket. The Monday Mania Special is a full rack of ribs, a pound of wings and a large fries or salad for $25 plus tax. On Tuesday, try a pound of pork, a pound of wings and fries or salad for $25 including tax. “Lots of people tend to share the specials, but I have seen people eat the entire meal by themselves,” says Adrien. “We’re known for our bbq. Come in and enjoy a great variety of barbequed food. Our fries are good, too!”

favourite financial planner | insurance agent In view of current issues around the housing market, household debt and the global impact of international events, having the support and informed advice of a financial planner makes sense now more than ever. Melanie Adams of Sun Life Financial has helped Barrie residents plan and reach their financial goals for 16 years. Her insurance and investment expertise, caring nature and ability to find solutions to difficult financial situations have helped Melanie win a Readers Choice Award for the ninth year in a row. Though thinking about your finances can often feel overwhelming, Melanie’s clients benefit from her ability to transform what is often complex into simple, digestible parts. “We find solutions that are easy, accessible and unique for each client. Taking some of the intimidation factor away gives me tremendous satisfaction. It’s all about clarity and getting you to your goals.” Melanie believes clear communication is the key to her clients making informed choices. She also insists on annual check-ups, much like your family physician would recommend. “Continuity is so important. Through regular
Serving Barrie for over 16 years, this local business is a true success story. “Loving what I do makes it easy.” reviews, my staff and I can keep up with the changing needs of our clients. From having kids to selling the family business, there is never a dull moment, and these moments require planning.” All client relationships start with a detailed financial plan to clearly articulate goals and look around corners at unexpected risks. When preparing the financial plan, Melanie considers what measures would be needed if the family ran into unexpected challenges. “We make sure you look at your financial plans from a holistic point of view, which means we trouble shoot for the unforeseen. What if a serious illness turned the household upside down, or even sudden unemployment? With the right safety net in place, our clients feel more confident in their ability to achieve their goals,” says Melanie.
Retirement is another core focus Melanie both enjoys and excels at. “We have a strong emphasis on retirement planning in this office. With fewer people having company pension plans and concerns about government benefits, clients rely on us to help them meet their retirement goals and not outlive their assets.” If you regularly use mainstream banks but are not getting the service or advice you need, Melanie advises you to explore other institutions. Many have similar products and services as the banks, but go well beyond. With only 30 percent of Canadians having a financial plan, she encourages people to look for a financial planner they trust and can see themselves working with for years to come. “We hope to have a life long relationship with our clients as they reach their milestone goals,” says Melanie. Congratulations, Melanie, on your 9th year as Barrie’s Favourite Financial Planner!

favourite yoga studio A note from Studio Owner, Rosanna Marouelli Thank you for voting us Barrie’s favourite yoga studio 2018! We feel so grateful for your support and vote this year. Moksha Yoga Barrie has been sharing our love of yoga for the last seven years and this is our seventh Readers Choice Award – thank you! We’ve built some fantastic community memories, not only at the studio, but also with numerous local charities. With your help, we’ve been able to raise almost $64,000 through our Moksha karma classes on Friday nights at 6:30pm. These classes are a $10 donation and each month we select a new charity to support. We would love for you to come experience the studio and meet our friendly team. We offer an introductory month of unlimited yoga for just $60! This is an exciting time for our community as Moksha Yoga studios across Canada are changing their names to Modo Yoga. Check out our cool new sign and come by for a studio tour. We’re open seven days a week! About Modo Yoga We are a community of like-minded, environmentally conscious, hot yoga studios in Canada, the U.S., Australia, and France. Today, there are over 70 studios but Modo Yoga started 14 years ago as a small community in Toronto. All Modo studios are rooted in the traditional teachings of yoga and are guided by 6 Pillars that inspire the ethos of each studio (Be Healthy, Be Accessible, Be Green, Be Community, Live To Learn and Be Peace). While the vision and values are shared community wide, each studio is
“We feel honoured and grateful to be part of this incredible community. We’ve recently unified our name with all the other Moksha/Modo studios around the world!” Modo means “A Place for All.” independently run and has its own unique vibe. Since 2004, Modo Yoga studios have collectively raised over 3.2 million dollars, thanks in part to our Karma Classes. Each week, all Modo studios offer donation-based classes to raise funds for local and international charities. Through our Karma Classes, we reach out, give back, and help support positive change. Modo Yoga Classes All Modo Yoga classes are built on the foundation of our Modo series – a dynamic system of postures and breathing exercises specifically designed to be practiced in the heat. Modo classes are accessible to all, from beginners to advanced students. A typical Modo class will have around 40 postures. Each class is intended to open, strengthen and relax the entire body. Practiced in 90, 75, and 60 minute variations – there are always plenty of Modo classes to choose from! Every Modo Yoga class will feel consistent and familiar but a unique experience is provided each time. Teachers guide students through poses, but
they also bring their own cues and style to each class. This means that classes are never exactly the same. Through repetition, we build strength and find new depths and understandings over time. In this way, we are always learning and experiencing familiar poses in new ways. We also offer flow classes, yin yoga (great for stretching), and a yang/yin class. Family yoga classes are offered seasonally and we also have Registered Massage Therapy and Craniosacral Therapy. What Does Modo Mean? Modo means A Place For All - it’s a name we created to reflect the deep intention of every studio to welcome all bodies, all races, all genders, all abilities and all kinds of people. Our studios are a ‘home away from home’ and we pride ourselves on creating fun, safe spaces where everyone feels welcome. Why the Name Change? On November 1, 2018, Moksha Yoga studios in Canada will change their name to Modo Yoga, a name that is currently used by our studios in the U.S, France and Australia. We’re changing our name because it’s confusing to have two names when we’re one studio family. Last year, our studio owners came together and collectively decided to make this change in Canada so that all studios could unite under one name. Nothing about the studio experience will change. The only thing changing is our name. Modo Yoga Barrie is still the same studio, with the same classes, the same teachers and the same amazing community! With so much gratitude. Namaste

favourite Bereavement Service Susanne Pretty and Jeff Scott are changing funeral services with Peaceful Transition, a fully licensed funeral establishment that can offer all the merchandise and services of a traditional funeral home, at a fraction of the cost. “Our business is appealing for those of us who prefer alternative choices from customary services offered by most funeral homes such as embalming, long visitations, over priced caskets, concrete vaults and urns,” says Susanne. “We’re proud to be the busiest funeral home in Simcoe County.”
The goal at Peaceful Transition is to provide the families they serve with affordable and practical alternatives and options to the escalating costs found in many traditional funeral homes. “When people ask if they can have a cremation and scatter the cremated remains at the cottage, we say absolutely,” says Susanne. “You can celebrate and memorialize your loved one any way you want.”
