editor’s note Something in the air It’s hard not to feel just a little more optimistic this time of year. The days are longer, brighter and filled with the promise of the warmer days to come. People start to get out and about after months of hibernating at home. Not surprisingly, many of us feel energized and maybe even ready to refresh some aspect of our lives. If you’re looking for a little inspiration to make positive changes, we have some great features to get you started. Take our profiles of Polly Correia and Tom Raterman. Both are full-time artists now, but they didn’t start out that way, at least not as a means of making a living. Raterman, for example, has been a priest and a college professor, among other things, but had always drawn or painted every day. Correia was a customer sales representative for more than 20 years before rediscovering her love of making something cool out of things others discard. Both have found a deep fulfilment in following their hearts. You can also read about how following her passion took Alliston’s Deanne Rose all the way to an Olympic bronze. As she told writer David Li, “I’ve always loved the freedom and fast pace of the soccer field.” That love also extends to her smalltown roots, which she credits for keeping her focused, grounded and feeling supported. Who could ask for more?

FAMILY LAW

4 Questions With: Shank Law We Do:

Divorces Separation Agreements Cohab Agreements Custody & Access Support Property Division Wills & Estates Notaries & Commissions Grandparents’ Rights Adoptions Ask us about unbundled services! 705-435-5055 info@shanklawoffice.com www.shanklawoffice.com

Q. 1 I stayed home with our children, and now my husband wants joint custody. What does this mean? Parents often confuse custody with residency; in law, custody means decision-making. A parent who has sole custody, makes all the major decisions concerning the children, particularly religion, health, and education. For example, a sole custody parent does not require permission to change the child’s school or obtain a travel consent. Joint custody parents share this decision-making authority; One parent cannot unilaterally make a major decision. Residency is a separate issue: You can have joint custody and the children reside primarily with you. By law, both parents have an equal right to custody of the children unless there is an agreement or a court order stating otherwise. Omar Khan – Family Law Q. 2 My spouse and I separated 8 years ago, and now our youngest is 20 years of age. When can I stop paying child support? The answer to your question, is – it depends. If you completed a separation agreement, look at the child support termination clauses. Does child support stop at age 18? Are there exceptions to that – such as, child support continues until age 23, if the child is dependent [this can mean that the child is in full-time postsecondary education].

Did you intend to support your child through a first degree or diploma? Your spouse may be prepared to agree to a reduction or end to child support on the understanding that you will pay most or all of your child’s post-secondary school costs. The best solution is to talk the issue out and then have your separation agreement amended by a family law lawyer. Good agreements make for good parenting. If your spouse will not agree, then see a family law lawyer to start a Court Application to stop child support. Roxanne Shank – Family Law Q. 3 Do I really need a notarized travel consent if our children are traveling outside of the country without both parents? I view travel consents like travel insurance - there is a chance you won’t require it, but if you break your leg, you are going to be glad you have it. Regardless of whether mom and dad are separated or together, anytime your minor child travels without both parents present, they should travel with a notarized travel authorization from the parent(s) who are not accompanying them to confirm their permission. Without these forms, they run the risk of not being allowed to leave the country or return to the country. These forms are readily available online and can be witnessed and notarized at any legal office. Omar Khan – Family Law Q. 4 What is the most frequent mistake that clients make? We see clients time and again, who come to us, having never in their lives made a Will and Powers of Attorney. This can have a profound effect on your affairs, especially if you are in a common-law relationship which doesn’t afford your partner any automatic rights in the event of your illness or death. These legal documents can only be made while you are of sound mind, which means bluntly- by the time you need to use them - it will be too late to make them. Do your future self a favour, and make an appointment to complete them now. Roxanne Shank – Family and Wills & Estates Law Your Friends at Shank Law

Perhaps Earth Day resonates a little more for those of us that choose to live in the Country. Hopefully we tend to appreciate, cherish and protect what nature has t ffer us. Yes I m cre ti g Segw y into this month’s topic, our personal production of Carbon Dioxide Emissions otherwise called our……..”Carbon Foot Print”. We all produce Carbon Dioxide, l rgely y the ur i g f F ssil Fuels f r He t, Light d Tr s rt ti . Let’s st rt to think about how we can reduce this.

bills as the systems will revert to electric back up if the demand exceeds the supply capacity. This starts to defeat the intended purpose of installing one of these in the first place.

Q. Why sh uld I c re ut my C r Foot Print?

Q. Livi g i the C u try m kes me de e d t my f ssil fuel ur i g car?

Carbon Dioxide emissions without a doubt are causing our Planet to warm. This can be evidenced by the increased frequency of severe weather. The increasing temperatures are melting our Northern Polar Ice Caps resulting in water levels rising in our Oceans. Smog is choking our Cities causing record numbers of respiratory issues. It’s about time that we all take responsibility for our own contributions.

Q. Wh t c I d t cut d w my emissions?

Well the simple things are; -don’t leave your car idling -upgrade your Wood Stove to 95% Efficiency or higher -don’t burn plastics -dry your cloths on a clothes line -live by the three R’s…Reduce, Recycle and ReUse. -be conscious of what you are doing on a daily basis.

Q. Wh t re the t s sim le thi gs?

Well 50% of your Household Carbon Foot Print is your Heating and Cooling. The most eco-friendly solution would be a Geo-Thermal Ground Source Heating/ Cooling System. This system draws the warmth and coolness from the ground’s natural thermal properties without using a fuel source. A word of caution however for these are expensive systems and if not properly installed can lead to very high electric

Q. What about my Electricity?

You could consider producing your own Electricity with Solar panels. The prices for a 10KW system have come down considerably to around $25,000. On a sunny day this would be enough to run your home. And now with the evolution of Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Units you can have electricity on cloudy days as well. These systems generally last 25 years or more providing you with Carbon Free Electricity.

Now this is where technology gets really cool! I have a passion for totally eliminating my Transportation Carbon Foot Print. And this is how I plan on doing it. Firstly install a 10KW or larger system of Solar Panels on your house or barn. Then add a Storage Unit, say a Tesla Power Wall to your system, placing it in the garage with a charging adapter for your cars. Next you can have the fun of buying an Electric Vehicle (EV) from anyone of the major OEM’s all of whom are all now electrifying most of their models. Even Ford has committed to electrifying their F150 Pickup Truck. Again due to Lithium-Ion Battery technology these EV’s now can charge quickly and have a range of almost 500kms per charge. They are incredibly powerful, fast and require almost no maintenance because there are few moving parts. No tune ups or oil changes, just new tires every 3 years. MOST IMPORTANTLY NO CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS…………ZERO!!!!! So start saving because my grand scheme of saving the Planet will cost you more money then you may have budgeted before you read this article. But think of the world you want to leave your kids? So let’s get started building a healthy sustainable environment for everyone EVERYDAY IS EARTH DAY!

Get in Those Gutters After a long winter of hibernating, it feels good to step out in early spring and get some fresh air while checking off a few home maintenance must-dos. One of the most important jobs to do is cleaning out your gutters. It gives you a chance to look for winter debris and damage, while ensuring they are protecting your home from water damage. Don’t want to climb that ladder? Hire the pros. Doing so will set you back about $154, according to homeadvisor.com. — Rachel Naud

CHORE CHART

Seasonal Swap Embrace the longer, brighter days by changing up your decor. A few ways to put a little spring in your space: • Swap heavier blankets and area rugs to lighter, brighter pieces. • Identify a focal point in every room — a window, a piece of art, a fireplace. Concentrate your decorating efforts on this and let the rest of the room act as support. • Create a fresh, springy centerpiece with greenery, fresh flowers, stones and other natural elements.

Keeping up with seasonal tasks makes yearly maintenance manageable and keeps your home in top shape. This spring, take the time to do the following: • Clear your air conditioner. Remove the snow cover and clear away any debris from the coils. Turn it on for a few minutes so you’ll be confident it will ready to use come summer. • Test your alarms. When the clock springs forward, test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and change the batteries if necessary. • Free your filters. After keeping you warm all winter, your furnace filter is probably full of dust, pet hair and more. Replace it so you can breathe easier come spring. • Get some screen time. Check your screen doors and windows for holes and tears. Screen repair kits can be found at most home improvement stores. — R.N.

EXPERT KITCHEN HACK With grilling season just around the corner, we asked Jeremy Korton, execute chef at Blue Mountain’s Oliver & Bonacini Café Grill, for his advice on cooking the perfect steak. “Buy well-raised, grass-fed beef. Before you cook it, pull it out of the fridge and let it sit on the counter for 20 to 30 minutes, to come to room temperature. Season it with salt and pepper. The meat will absorb the salt and start to sweat, which brings out the moisture, then put it on a hot grill. To determine doneness, mid-rare can take six to seven minutes for a striploin, or a minute or two longer for ribeye. Ribeye is my favourite and best on the barbecue because it has more fat marble, which results in more flavour. When it’s cooked to your liking, pull it off and let it rest. If you cut into it too soon, the juices will run out and your steak will be tough and dry.”

LADY in RED Grapefruits are the often-overlooked sisters of the citrus family, but they’re worth noticing — and sampling — this time of year. They sparkle in your mouth, look beautiful on your kitchen counter, and are more versatile than you might think. Slice one over a spinach salad, eat it straight out of the rind with a spoon or stir the juice into a cocktail, or mocktail. — K.R.

Eighty-seven more grocery stores across the province are set to add alcohol to their shelves this spring, including four in Simcoe County. You may be able to pick up beer and cider at the Zehrs on Byrne Drive in Barrie, Food Basics in Midland, Fresh Co. in Collingwood and Walmart in Orillia as soon as April. — Karen Robock

Case in point Whether you’re an aspiring Martha Stewart, or just hoping to throw dinner together on time with minimal fuss, you need the right tools. Here’s one that you’ve probably been neglecting: your knife set. Most serious cooks will agree: a selection of good quality knives is essential. Oh yeah, and they need to be sharp, too. ASK THE EXPERT

“My spring allergies are starting up again. What can I do to get some relief?” Allergy symptoms are the result of an overactive immune system, so I focus on recommending supplements that help balance this response, including bioflavonoids such as quercetin and vitamin C. Probiotics are also beneficial, especially if someone also has digestion-related issues, asthma and/or long-term allergies. Other therapies that may help reduce symptoms include eucalyptus steam inhalation, the use of botanical/herbal extracts in tea, liquid or supplement form, such as nettle root, astragalus, moringa and ginger. Acupuncture can be helpful for symptoms of sinus congestion. Dietary changes can definitely make a difference. I’m a huge fan of onion, fresh garlic and fresh ginger root for anti-inflammatory purposes. I may also recommend reduced consumption of specific inflammatory foods. -— Dr. Heather Goldthorpe, a naturopath in Barrie

We’re all looking for balance, right? And shortcuts. Enter this sweet, soothing rooibos tea that’s loaded with probiotics to support digestion and immunity, so it’s as good for you as it tastes. Swap it for your regular afternoon or evening cup of tea and you’ve just done yourself — and your gut — a favour. $14.98 per 50g at all David’s Tea locations including the Georgian Mall. — K.R.

A Tottenham church has launched a special dementia-friendly hymn-signing service on Fridays, for people living with dementia and their loved ones. Research has shown that when people are diagnosed with dementia, memories related to their youth can be strongest and often these are tied in with music. The hymn sings are an opportunity for a fun outlet for everyone. St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Tottenham — K.R.

Food for Thought

Need some advice about starting a new diet or ways to eat better? Trish Allan, a clinical nutritionist in Barrie, offers everything from single consultations to year-long “Life Changer” programs. trishallan.com

Before you try Whole 30 or a juice cleanse, talk to your doctor. New research from the European Society of Cardiology has found that very low-calorie eating plans could be damaging for those with heart disease. After one week MRI tests showed higher heart fat content and deterioration of heart function, including its ability to pump blood. By the end of the eight-week study, participants’ heart function improved again, but this initial effect could be problematic for someone with heart disease, say researchers. — K.R.

Stopover: Bermuda More than just the baggy shorts and big onions it’s associated with, Bermuda is a connect-the-dot maze of 180 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, on the same latitude as South Carolina, and about a two-hour flight from New York. With a temperate climate, as opposed to tropical, this little paradise is calm and cool, shy and private — a little mysterious. The coral walls and white roofs mimic the sand and clouds, framing the lush landscape and winding narrow roads. It’s a fun take on the classic French manicure and can easily be recreated in any shade — think deep purple, vibrant orange or spicy red — to suit your mood, your outfit or your destination. Hot pink for a beach getaway, anyone? — Andrea Karr

Custom Content Bespoke beauty is the way of the future, and now you can visit your local medi-spa and have them whip up a serum that’s customized specifically for you. The process starts with a consultation to determine your skin needs. Then an aesthetician advises on three active powder ingredients from 19 options to target your problem areas (say, retinol to minimize fine lines or vitamin C to brighten). She’ll blend it into a hydrating and soothing base and, voila, you have an utterly fresh serum with potent, high-efficiency active ingredients to use morning and night. Universkin P Serum, $199, universkin.ca. — A.K.

ONE AND ONLY Say goodbye to bathroom clutter — at least in the hairspray department. Buy just one pretty rose canister of Hold.Me hairspray and you’ll get three different types of hold: light, medium and strong. By adjusting the nozzle, you can control the amount of product released, from a fine mist to a concentrated spray. Choose a lighter hold for loose waves or major control for a complex updo. Hold.Me also protects against heat and UV damage, known for fading colour, and is paraben-, sulphate- and cruelty-free. Design.Me Hold.Me Three Ways Hairspray, $22, designmehair.com. — A.K.

That’s the Scrub Ever opened a beauty product and wanted to eat it? That’s how you’ll feel about L’Oréal Paris’s three new sugar scrubs for different skin concerns. For a healthy glow, choose the scrub for dull skin, with its three fine sugars (found in all the blends) and grapeseed oil. To control oil and blemishes, go for the yummy green option, with kiwi seeds — it promises to purify pores on application. And for a dry, tight face, the cocoa mix will soften and soothe dry patches. If you’re not already exfoliating a few times a week, now’s the time to start. L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Scrubs, $15 each, at mass-market retailers. — A.K.

IT ALL STARTED ON A BET Lou Biffis President

Nottawasaga Inn Resort Hwy 89, Alliston 1-800-669-5501 NottawasagaResort.com

This year marks the Nottawasaga Inn Resort’s 50th anniversary. What started as a friendly wager over a bottle of Canadian Club between Founder and President Lou Biffis and his friend, resulted in the opening of the Inn, nestled within the quiet countryside of the Nottawasaga Valley back in 1968. Since opening its doors, the Resort & Conference Centre have experienced numerous expansions and developments, evolving from a 40 room hotel with only one restaurant, a banquet room and coffee shop, to boasting 269 guestrooms including 34 luxurious suites, 2 restaurants, a lounge, 36 meeting rooms, a trade centre, an onsite chapel and wedding garden, plus a wealth of recreation options. The award winning resort not only offers a relaxing place for families and vacation traveller’s to getaway, but also provides a multitude of amenities for weddings, events, sports and business. Q. What was the “bet” all about?

When I first emigrated from a small farming town in Italy to Canada, I had a vision of opening up an Inn. The beautiful rolling hills of the Nottawasaga Valley reminded me of my hometown back in Northern Italy. Soon after purchasing some land outside Alliston, a friend bet me a bottle of Canadian Club that I would not be able to obtain the liquor license needed to operate an Inn, because the township had been dry since 1907. I went against all odds, winning a municipal plebiscite to allow a liquor licenses in Tecumseth Township in 1967 and began construction immediately; within only 8 months we were open for business.

Q. What was the land used for prior to becoming the Inn?

Originally used by Mr. William Ruthven to produce the first nursery-grown sod in Ontario, I purchased the land and continued to grow sod to supply Toronto builders. Encouraged by the bet, I then began working the lower areas to form parkland and built a 120 ft. long x 4 ft. wide bridge supported by cables over the Nottawasaga River that runs through the property in order to pursue my dream of building an Inn. This landmark on the Valley Golf Course is an important part of our history and not only serves as a visual reminder of the inception of the Inn, but

it remains the namesake of the company that runs the Resort -- Cable Bridge Enterprises.

Q. What makes the Nottawasaga Resort stand out from other resorts?

We are unique in that we are the only Resort in Canada offering an onsite twin pad hockey arena, 45 regulation holes of golf and two internationally recognized soccer fields. In addition, a multitude of amenities are available in our 70,000 sq.ft. Sports & LeisureDome including a 100ft waterslide, 25m swimming pool and jungle themed indoor mini-golf. Over the years we’ve received a number of hospitality awards crediting our outstanding team members as well as people’s choice awards for best family resort, golf course and the Riverview specifically, which overlooks the Nottawasaga River, has received best restaurant with a view. We also remain a family owned and operated resort which sets us apart from a number of vacation properties.

Q. What is the secret to successfully operating a resort for 50 years?

Our goal has always been to welcome guests with the same enthusiasm and spirit as the first day we opened our doors. That spirit comes from our talented team of professionals who take pride in providing the highest standards of service and hospitality. By investing in good people we’ve been able to foster a team that shares our vision of being a dynamic, world-class destination and we are honoured to consider them as a part of the family. We couldn’t have made it to 50 years without their dedication. Our success also comes from our commitment to constantly improve our facilities and services to ensure our guests enjoy a truly spectacular experience. If you have not been to the Nottawasaga Inn in some time, I encourage you to come and see all the changes. This spring will see the completion of our room renovations, and the bulk of our meeting spaces will receive a modernized new look – it’s an exciting time!

Q. What sorts of celebrations are in line for your 50th anniversary?

During the year we will be offering a number of specials, events and dining experiences to celebrate the Resort’s 50th year. Make sure to follow our evolution in photographs from an Inn to a Resort over the years and to participate in some fun contests on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Basket Case It’s a tricky time of year. Will it rain? Will it snow? Because the answer changes from day to day, your front entrance can start to look like a clothing war zone. Thankfully, Margaret Halos, owner of Living Organized (livingorganized.ca), which serves the Barrie and Alliston areas, has some battle-ready strategies. Bin thinking: “I’m a big fan of baskets and bins,” Halos says. “In almost every closet, there’s space up top where you can put baskets of additional stuff.” Designate one for hats and mitts, she suggests. Or give each family member a basket to use. Separate seasons: “People drop too many coats, jackets and shoes in the front hall closet,” Halos says. Keep only what is in season (with maximum of three) and put the rest in bedroom closets. Rack up: If you have to keep a few footwear options at the ready, buy a shoe rack, Halos says. Then keep the taller boots on the top and shoes on the bottom. That should help keep things tidily at hand.

hat more is needed in a ski chalet than a fire to warm the toes and a roomy lounge to stretch out on while sipping a hot toddy, après ski. In truth, the sole purpose of any weekend home, be it a ramshackle cabin in the woods or a luxury Collingwood townhouse at the foot of the ski runs, is a place of retreat, a refuge to cast off the stresses of the city and reconnect with your wilder nature. Fresh off the recent purchase and decoration of a town bungaloft in Collingwood, Stef Edwards and David McVicker realized the retreat they had just designed didn’t answer these criteria. The shelter wasn’t large enough to accommodate their frequent weekend guests, and the palette of cool greys and whites didn’t provide enough of a departure from their Aurora condo. Reassessing their choices, they decided to switch gears completely, unload the property and pursue a more rustic getaway that spoke to their weekend sensibilities. It was a bold move, but a risk the couple was willing to make. “I didn’t want the same modern grey themes,” Edwards says. “I wanted something that is warm and comfortable and really brings the elements of the outside in. I wanted people to come in and feel comfortable and homey.” Events would unfold quickly. The sale would include all furnishings while the hunt for the new chalet was on. “My girlfriend found it,” Edwards says. “She showed me the brochure at Thanksgiving. The next day we went to the open house and fell in love with it. It feels like you’re outside. We saw it at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Monday, and at 8:30 p.m. we had an accepted offer. The new chalet features a grand stackedstone fireplace, rivers of wood and a rustic character that whispers, “Relax.” It also increases their living space by 1,200 square feet, expanding their bedroom count to four — enough to lodge friends and family with ease. “You can see the Georgian Bay from the master,” Edwards says, “and the ski hills from so many rooms. It’s like you’re living in nature.” Delighted with their new acquisition, Edwards and McVicker called in their go-to designer, Niche Décor, a full-service custom design and retail operation in Aurora, to handle the interiors. Shima Yazdan, vice-president of operations, knew her clients’ tastes well, having designed most of their residences. “They’re stylish people who love entertaining and living in a

beautiful space,” Yazdan says. But this new chalet was for pure recreation. There’d be skiing gear, parties, dogs, and guests. Yazdan brought in a deep Gia sofa for the living room in a durable polyester blend made to look like linen. “It withstands lots of traffic,” Yazdan says. “We’re big on casual living. They needed a large lounge, a spot to put the feet up — no refined finishes that don’t hold up.” Yazdan paired the sofa with inviting sinkinto them Eleanor club chairs in brown leather. Then dressed everything with chunky pillows and throws. A hide throw rug, shadowbox coffee table and freeform teak nesting tables completes the tableau. “Our big philosophy is ‘Love Where You Live,’” Yazdan says. “Your home should be a reflection of your personality, who you are. You need to be comfortable in your space. No cookie-cutter templates.” Behind the sofa, the Libations Bar Cabinet is the spot to refresh drinks. Bar cabinets are a growing trend. The clutter of glasses and spirits is tucked away behind bi-fold louvered doors that deliver a clean look when not in use, but unleash party glitz when appropriate. On the opposite side of the living area, beyond the entryway’s oak-and-iron stairwell, you’ll find a compact kitchen and dining area. Yazdan brought in the rustic Couture dining table that seats eight, with three different seating profiles to choose from. There’s one to suit every temperament: bench seating for squirmy children, made of seared oak with live edge; castered upholstered end chairs for heads of household; and three leatherette Halden chairs that provide durability for active guests. The art on the wall, entitled Solitude, is a customframed depiction of tree branches printed on glass and paper that generates a 3D effect. Above the table, a 16 Edison-light pendant lamp with nautical ropes hangs. It matches another dangling over the main stairwell. Most of the artistic touches throughout the home are intentionally organic in nature. Twigs, tree accents and small bird nests are found everywhere in art pieces and in actual form. Even cushions have etchings of songbirds. A huge three-paneled print of a stag placed over the living room’s fireplace is a reminder of the abundant wildlife abounding in the surrounding woods. Bedrooms lying on the upper level continue this theme. A barnboard feature wall was installed in the master by Adam Garbutt of AG Designs. It frames the dramatic uphol-

On the bedside table, a trio of fabulous AGO twig vases educe serenity. The ball drop glass chandelier in the master is the one deviation. “We love the bedroom,” Edwards says. “It has an artic elegance.” Two more guest bedrooms grace the upper level, with black-iron twin beds in one and a roomy queen for couples in the second. The media area on the lower level holds another lovely bedroom with a blue motif of linens. A massive tufted ottoman and sectional lounge with a wingback chair on this floor is the spot for movie watching by the gas-powered fireplace. But the main level remains the primary hangout for all, offering immediate access to exterior decks on either end. Because in a chalet, says Edwards, “There’s nothing like a real woodburning fireplace.” Designer: Niche Decor (Aurora/Newmarket) Linens: F.A.D. Inc. Resistance Is Not Futile Want to up your exercise game? Look to resistance bands. Not only are they easy to use, they are also versatile and incredibly effective. You use them to create resistance (hence the name) to more deeply work your muscles. Because movement becomes harder as the band lengthens, exercises become more dynamic — with other equipment, the weight remains static throughout any movement. The result is increased muscle and bone strength.

o

If you’re ready to get with the band, consider buying a variety — looped and straight, flat and tubular, lighter and heavier — to mix things up and work your whole body.

WHY SNACKING MATTERS

Fuel Up! THESE MINI MEALS WILL BOOST ENERGY BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER YOU SWEAT BY LIZ BRUCKNER

Y

ou’re pretty fit. You go easy on the sugary stuff, adjust your training game every few months and hit the weights as often as you can. But if you want your body to continue performing like a finely tuned ma-

chine, how you fuel it before and after a workout matters. Whether you’re enduring an intense spinning session or a less taxing neighbourhood jog, top your tank with these dietitian-approved workout snacks and mini meals.

Consuming a mix of protein and carbohydrates pre- and post-workout not only keeps you feeling satisfied as you sweat, it helps minimize fatigue as your body undergoes strenuous activity during and after your workout, says Angela Wallace, a registered dietitian with clinics in Vaughan and Caledon. Snacking before you sweat is key because it fuels your body for the task ahead. “Snacking on protein supports muscles through impending activity, but also leaves you feeling satisfied and able to complete the workout, while consumed carbs break down into glucose, which feeds muscles during activity,” she says. “The body also stores some of this glucose as glycogen, which can be used during more intense activity — on a long-distance run, for example.” Post-workout, refuelling with carb- and protein-rich foods is necessary to help replenish energy while also helping muscles recover and repair. “You need to eat after you work out for a few reasons,” Wallace says. “You need to build up your stores of glycogen that may have been used during your workout, replace the calories you’ve burned, and feed your muscles with protein, especially after a weight-training session.” Here’s what you should nosh on before and after your sweat session.

TD Wealth We work with you to help you manage, grow, transition, and preserve your wealth. Debbie Hudson CFP®, CIM® Vice President, Investment Advisor TD Wealth Private Investment Advice Before a light yoga class… A banana or apple with nut or seed butter yields the perfect balance of carbohydrates and protein your body needs to feel energetic and satisfied throughout the workout, Angela Wallace says. Before an intense weight-training class… Oatmeal is one of your best options before a tough workout because it’s digested very slowly, allowing for a gradual release of glucose into the blood stream. Before a quick gym workout or run… A small fruit/nut butter/water-or-milk smoothie can deliver the perfect carb-protein mix. This helps your body maintain its endurance while providing support to your muscles during the activity, Wallace says. After a killer spin class… A simple Greek salad with chicken provides the fibre, protein and other important nutrients your body needs following a sweaty workout. Need an extra jolt of energy? Wallace suggests adding a small smoothie (for example, ½ banana, ½ cup of berries, almond milk, plus 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds) to the mix. After hot yoga… A veggie omelette with avocado offers a great combo of protein, complex carbs and healthy fats that will both satisfy hunger and feed your muscles. After a total-body training session… Try grilled or broiled salmon with sweet potatoes and veggies. Loaded with protein, complex carbs and healthy fats, it’s a great way to help your body refuel and recover. Worked your muscles extra hard? Wallace suggests adding beans to your meal for more protein benefits.

Nutrition in Flight? Airline food isn’t exactly synonymous with delicious, healthy choices. But according to a recent study by Charles Platkin, director of the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center, some airlines are changing that assumption. Of 12 major airlines whose snacks and on-board food offerings were looked at, four contenders crowded into the top two spots: Delta and Virgin airlines share the top spot for healthiest food choices in the sky, with our very own Air Canada tied with JetBlue for second place. The study praised Air Canada for keeping nutrients high and calories low for meals, but chided the company for not including nutritional information and ingredients on the menu. JetBlue garnered similar accolades, with an additional star for posting nutritional information on its website; the airline lost points, however, for not offering healthy snacks, such as its fruit bar, for free.

Safer Travels Here’s why you should buy insurance along with your plane ticket BY DOUG WALLACE

WARNING: This list is a bit of a downer, as it involves catastrophic life events we’d all rather not think about, let alone plan for. But being prepared for emergencies is super-smart, however unpleasant the subject matter. Travel insurance is an essential part of travel, full stop. Without it, you’re leaving yourself open to all sorts of problems, some of them devastating, most of them financial. The truth is, you can’t afford not to buy insurance of some kind. Here is a three-step pre-step: 1. Fully wrap your head around what travel insurance is included with your credit cards. Keep in mind that that insurance only works if you use that particular card to purchase said travel. 2. Check to see if your workplace insurance has travel insurance benefits you can take advantage of. Maybe that’s all you need, but you won’t know unless you invest the time to read the fine print. And if you don’t understand the fine print, telephone the insurance provider and start asking questions. 3. Frequent travellers should shop around for a good, general annual plan that will let them skip the add-on insurance packages that travel websites try to sell you on the fly as you’re booking online, often playing to your insecurities.

You’re either one of those people who won’t leave home without it or someone who just throws caution to the wind — at your peril. Lost luggage aside, here are eight reasons why you need travel insurance: 1. Trip cancellation. Plans can change, and if yours change more than most, a potential cancellation is more of a consideration. 2. Trip interruption. A billion things can cut short your trip of a lifetime — and none of them need be of your own doing. 3. Medical emergencies. There’s no way you want to be ill in a foreign country without insurance. You could end up losing your home and/or your life savings. 4. Acts of God: Earthquakes, mudslides, forest fires, hurricanes and worse. The plethora of weather weirdness of late is reason enough to not be left holding the suitcase while everyone runs for cover. 5. Terrorist attack or military coup. The world can be a volatile

and unpredictable place, even in some of what you thought were the safest of places. 6. Labour strike. No one wants to be stranded thousands of miles from home just because the airport workers walk off the job. Preventing this from being a problem is wonderful peace of mind. 7. Beached cruise ship. This happened to my auntie once, and she had to come home in her pajamas and a borrowed coat! 8. Death in the family. (See Point 2.) If you have elderly or rickety parents (or close relatives), make sure your insurance is topped up. Bonus Reason: Your own death! We told you this was going to be a downer…

• Do not try this at home. Take in the fast track options at the BMW Performance Center West. Now you can enjoy its Mini motoring school featuring the John Cooper Works Hardtop 2 Door model. Try revving up on a road course in a sport-suspension vehicle with low-profile tires. • Hit new heights. Get your fitness on and enjoy the scenery cycling along canyon washes and mountain ridges during a half-day customized mountainbiking tour with Big Wheel Tours. Expert guides tailor the group biking adventure for all skill levels. Perk: hotel drop-off and pickup from many area resorts. • Embrace your easy rider. Put on a helmet, fasten your seat belt and experience the ultimate road trip with EagleRider Motorcycle Rentals and Tours’ Palm Springs Slingshot Tour. During this self-drive 170 km-plus tour in the threewheel Polaris Slingshot (with room for two), you’ll drive a panoramic loop beginning at EagleRider’s facility near downtown Palm Springs up through the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway and into the artsy, milehigh town of Idyllwild.

If well-being is your goal, this Southern California resort destination brims with ways to encourage a healthy lifestyle. Whether you need motivation to kick-start a major life change or a getaway to get back on track, here’s how to promote balance and harmony. • Soak it up. Water immersion therapies like Watsu and Aqua Soma are among guests’ favourite relaxation rituals at Two Bunch Palms, a Desert Hot Springs destination spa famous for its mineral-rich waters. Try a unique treatment like Green Your Body, a multistep skin rejuvenating experience, or take part in a Shaman healing session that integrates sacred rituals associated with Indigenous cultures. • Chill out. Enthusiasts of cryotherapy, or cold therapy, have noted its many benefits, including relieving depression and anxiety, alleviating inflammation and reducing the signs of aging. Desert Cryotherapy offers guests a variety of services — like a full-body session in a very cool cryochamber, localized cryotherapy to manage pain, liquid nitrogen facials and other therapies. Cryotherapy is also available at Kinetix Health & Performance Center in Palm Desert.

Fast track it at the BMW Performance Center West.

• Fill up. For a healthy, delicious supply of brain “fuel,” head to Chef Tanya’s Kitchen in Palm Springs. Tanya Petrovna, original proprietor/chef of the Native Foods chain, recently opened this gourmet vegan eatery. It features a daytime lunch counter and deli that remains open on Wednesday evenings for takeout dinner catering.

Try yoga at Two Bunch Palms, Desert Hot Springs.

• Now hear this. Enjoy a soothing sensory dip — minus the water — with a sound bath, a meditative ritual that usually involves a facilitator playing crystal singing bowls. Bikram Yoga Plus Coachella Valley, Evolve Yoga La Quinta and other studios host this wellness practice on select dates. For the ultimate sound bath experience, visit the storied Integratron up in the high desert town of Landers near Joshua Tree. In the 1950s, Ufologist George Van Tassel claimed a Venusian alien instructed him to build this acoustically perfect structure. Helpful hint: Book well in advance, as these sonic healing sessions are very popular. • Really retreat. Chiropractor, certified yoga instructor and physical rehab specialist Eden Goldman hosts yoga and mindfulness retreats at La Quinta Resort & Club, nestled at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains in La Quinta. Retreat highlights encompass healthy menus and cleansing practices, yoga and meditation classes, and optional additional excursions that take advantage of wellness activities found throughout the destination.

Take a swing at golf at La Qunita Stadium Course.

Game On! HARD WORK, FOCUS AND DEDICATION HAVE HELPED ALLISTON’S DEANNE ROSE KICK HER SOCCER GAME UP TO THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE. AND SHE’S ONLY GETTING STARTED BY DAVID LI

he’s already achieved glory on the world stage, but Deanne Rose, an 18-year-old soccer star and Olympic bronze medalist, is happy to embrace her small-town roots. Indeed, she traces her remarkable success on the soccer field to her early years with the Alliston Soccer League. “My mom [Anne Marie Rose-Mighty] put me in soccer when I was about four years old,” she says. “I’ve always loved the freedom and fast pace of being on the soccer field.” That passion is also evident when Rose talks about her hometown. “I love the small-town atmosphere because you get to know a lot of the people,” she says. “When something good happens in your life, it seems like everyone knows about it and is so supportive.” Her sense of community has kept Rose focused and grounded through her meteoric rise in the world of soccer. Lift-off began a few short years after that first experience with the town’s soccer league, when it became clear that Rose had a natural talent for the game. Seeking more of a challenge, she joined the Bradford Soccer Club when she was nine years old. “It was a rep team about 30 minutes away from home, which was more of a competitive level of soccer,” she explains. During her time on the Bradford team, Rose grew as a player, so much so that in 2014, when she was 15, Canada Soccer selected her to join the Canadian national youth program — a development team that aims to prepare members for the women’s national squad. “It was an amazing opportunity and experience to be able to compete at that high-level environment,” she says. And always looking to up her game, Rose left the Bradford team in 2015 to join the provincial powerhouse Scarborough GS United team, where she would help the squad capture GoodLifeMagazine.ca | 53

“I didn’t realize how many people from Alliston were following us and watching us on TV. It’s exciting to know so many people in the town are supporting you” its fourth straight Ontario Cup title. That December, Rose’s talents scored her a spot on the women’s national team as it competed in an Olympic qualifying event in Brazil. Despite being the youngest player, at 16, Rose held her own, and Canada Soccer again selected her, this time to join the Olympic team. At the Rio Olympics, Rose made Olympic history, becoming the youngest player to score a goal. She also recorded an assist in Canada’s thrilling bronze-medal victory over Brazil. “It was unreal and just the best experience of my life,” she says. “Being able to score for the team was my dream going in, and it was fulfilled in the best way possible. The support from the team and the older players was amazing. Being part of that team during the Olympics was a great feeling.” That feeling followed her home. “It was overwhelming and exciting at the same time to know so many people in the town are supporting you and people are rooting for you,” she says. “I didn’t realize how many people from Alliston were following us and watch-

ing us on television.” That local support and celebrating continued as Rose’s breakthrough success in 2016 earned her Canada Soccer’s Canadian Under-17 Player of the Year award. “This award caps off a fantastic year for the youngest goal scorer in Olympic history,” says John Herdman, head coach of the women’s national team. “Deanne’s international journey has only just begun, and I am certain that she will be delivering many more great memories for Canadians in the years to come.” In the meantime, Rose is continuing her education — as a freshman on a full soccer scholarship with the University of Florida Gators. “Deanne became high on the radar at a lot of schools with her success with the Canadian senior team,” says Becky Burleigh, the Gators’ head soccer coach. “Melanie Booth is a former Canada national team player who had played at Florida. She worked with Deanne at the youth level and really liked her character. That is something that definitely attracted us to her, in addition to her high level of play.” For her part, Rose is delighted about play-

ing with the Gators. “The team is great and the coaches clearly care about the progression of the players,” she says. “It’s just a winning team. I love the way that we play together.” As for her own on-field style, here’s how she sees her role: “I’m more of a power player in terms of breaking lines and dribbling with both feet. I like to use my pace and power to beat players going toward the goal.” And Rose has goals of her own she’s heading toward, three specifically: capturing an NCAA national title with the University of Florida; representing Canada at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France; then playing in the 2020 Olympics. She is well aware of the work it will take to achieve all three. “If there’s anything my journey has taught me, it’s that hard work pays off,” she says. “Working hard has allowed me to achieve so many amazing things, and I know that continuing to dedicate myself to getting better can only help me to achieve my goals.” It’s a philosophy that is clearly working for this small-town girl.

A COMMUNITY ON STAGE

BY ANDREW HIND

For more than 50 years, South Simcoe Theatre has brought together volunteer performers, stage crews and devoted fans, all motivated by a love of live theatre

C

ommunity spirit and passion for the arts take centre stage at South Simcoe Theatre in Cookstown. Generations of cast and crew have been providing, as their tagline proudly announces,“Great Community Theatre” since 1966, and in the process delighting lovers of live theatre, creating new generations of patrons and elevating the local arts scene to new heights.

“The South Simcoe Theatre began with the passion of Joan McGraw, who arrived from Ireland in the early 1960s with a love of live theatre and a dream of creating a community theatre here,” says Janet Lord-Genyk, a longtime board-member and former theatre chair who has also produced, directed and performed in a number of shows over the years.

Simcoe Community Theatre brings talent to all aspects of its productions, from the highly detailed sets for Dracula (above) to the performances by actors Emily Cally as Lucy Seward and Andrew Nikkanen as Jonathan Harker (below).

McGraw attracted a number of other like-minded individuals and by the autumn of 1966, the South Simcoe Theatre had been formed. It was, and remains today, a non-profit community-based theatre dedicated to staging professional-quality productions. From the very beginning, the all-volunteer cast and crew have been motivated by a love of theatre and the joys that it brings. Originally, the theatre staged shows out of Banting Memorial High School in Alliston, but in September 1983, the theatre moved to the Cookstown Town Hall, which the Township of Innisfil agreed to rent out for a modest amount in an effort to support the arts. “I love this old lady,” Lord-Genyk says of the theatre’s current home. “It’s a quaint building with a unique spirit and lots of history. It’s a great venue in which to perform.” The Cookstown Town Hall was built in 1867, the year of Canada’s Confederation. Over the years, the building has been used as a temperance hall, Presbyterian church, meeting hall for the Lodge of Good Templars, and, after 1905, the town hall. “The volunteers are the backbone of the theatre. There are about 15 core volunteers, with another 20 to 30 front-of-house. They all do it for the love of theatre. Absolutely no one gets paid. Some cast and crew come from as far away as Orillia and Richmond Hill, such is their passion for the artistry being nurtured at South Simcoe Theatre,” says Kathy Simpson, a one-time president who joined in 2001. “We GoodLifeMagazine.ca | 57

also have a lot of students who volunteer here for their hours. That’s important, as we want to create a new generation of people passionate about the theatre. Some of these students have gone on to pursue theatre studies in university, which I’m really proud of.” Getting a show produced takes close to a year. Planning for the 2018-19 season, for example, began in late March. Then begins the process of applying for the rights for the shows selected, advertising, casting the actors and a host of other details that the public will never see, but which are vital to any production. Rehearsals can begin almost three months in advance, with generally three rehearsals per week.

“The theatre puts on three main stage shows per season [typically fall through spring], a mixture of contemporary and traditional theatre shows, at least one of which is a musical,” says box office manager Candy Pryce, a professional actor who also directs shows at South Simcoe Theatre. In addition to these three main shows, the lineup includes a Christmas pantomime, where audience members get to boo and hiss at the show’s villain, and a June play-reading series called “Four Play,” where interested people submit scripts and four are selected to have a performance-reading in front of a live audience in the theatre. “It’s an opportunity for new writers, directors and actors to get their feet

wet in the world of live theatre,” Pryce says. South Simcoe Theatre has two shows in the 2017-2018: 39 Steps and Harvest Moon Rising. 39 Steps, which ran from February 8 to 25, is a comedy/parody adapted from a 1935 Alfred Hitchcock movie, and has been wildly successful on the West Side and on Broadway. It’s noted for having its four-person cast playing multiple roles, requiring lightning-fast changes. This spring’s show, Harvest Moon Rising, running from April 12 to 29, is a Canadian musical with music by Leslie Arden. “It’s a beautiful show. I saw it in a theatre 10 years ago and loved it,” Pryce says. “It’s about a family in the 1980s who are facing the prospect of losing their farm, with flashbacks to the 1800s and the lives of the first people who established the farm. It’s a story true to Canadian life.” Community theatre, in Pryce’s opinion, is more than about entertaining audiences. “Community theatre offers people the chance to express artistry, but just as important, it brings a community together and therefore contributes to community spirit.” Janet Lord-Genyk agrees: “Theatres and the arts are so important. They build a sense of community, build confidence and self-worth for cast and crew who have the opportunity to showcase their talent, offer fun and improve quality of life.”

here were taletell signs of her future career when Polly Correia was a seven-year-old elementary student in Brampton. Every time she passed by her school’s garbage bin, she wondered if there might be hidden treasure in there. Eventually, the curious child retrieved some bin items and upcycled them. Her creative pursuits were a way for the budding artisan to deal with being part of a dysfunctional family. “I used to run to a room in the basement where I created all kinds of things and did drawings,” say Correia, who lives in Beeton with her husband, Ferdinand. “That was my comfort zone. Then I grew up, got married, had kids and forgot all about creating things. “ The memory of making something beautiful from discards reappeared many years later after what seemed like a random event. “A few years ago, I was walking along a street and looked into a store,” Correia says. “They had shabby chic furniture. I was really drawn to it. When I entered the store, it felt like the best place I had ever been to in my life. I told the salesperson I wished I could make this kind of furniture. It turned out they had painted-furniture workshops. When I took that workshop, it was ‘wow!’ I realized this interest had been inside me for so long. From then on, I began painting furniture.” Correia started scouring the streets for curbside furniture finds. She soon discovered her Honda Fit was as good as its name. Even a six-drawer dresser could ease into the hatchback. Correia also realized she wanted to redesign found furniture into one-of-a-kind pieces instead of just altering their appearance with paint. “I was always drawn to unique pieces of furniture, but didn’t know what to do with them,” Correia says. “Sometimes I would pick up a piece from here or there, but I wasn’t married to a carpenter then and didn’t know how to fix it.” Ferdinand, her husband and a carpenter, renovates houses by day and works on transforming furniture during off hours. Correia finds pieces, brings them home and creates a new design and/or purpose for them. Then, her husband repairs and alters the piece according to her imaginative design. “Sometimes, I can’t even sleep because I’m designing in my head at night,” she says. “I find a piece and right away start to figure out how I’m going to change it.” Friends who saw the upcycled furniture in

the couple’s home asked to buy it and sales soon snowballed. What began as a hobby soon felt like a business. Correia expanded her focus to look for curbside spare metal parts and second-hand store discards that could become fabulous legs for a coffee table, ornament a mid-century dresser or be incorporated into a dining set. She discovered old-fashioned dining room chairs became stylish bedside tables when the backs were removed and a knob was added to form a faux drawer. An also-ran cabinet was transformed into a superb contemporary piece with the addition of recycled shutter doors. “At first I looked at the cabinet and thought what a piece of garbage,” Correia says. “But I took it home and kept looking at it. Finally, I thought OK, this is what we’re doing. I found a set of shutter doors. They were too long and wide, but Ferdinand made them fit.” The couple has registered Deco Reclaimed as their company name. Their next business move will be literal — they need to relocate to a larger home with space for a showroom and inventory storage. The search is on now for the perfect property to make their business dreams come true. “Until you try something, you don’t know what you are really capable of doing,” Correia says. “I was a customer service representative for 23 years and used to wish I could find something I really liked to do. When I took that furniture painting workshop, I knew it was me.” For more information on Polly Correia’s upcycled furniture and Deco Reclaimed, go to Deco Reclaimed on Facebook or email decorreclaimed@gmail.com.

An Artist’s Post-Modern Spiritual Journey During a life that has included a religious calling as a priest and a career in academia, artist Thomas Raterman has always been sustained by creating art. His stunning contemporary paintings reflect his spiritual journey and post-modern hope for this world BY PATTI VIPOND

or artist Thomas Raterman, creating colourful and eclectic contemporary paintings reflects his intuitive urge to find the metaphysical ground from which all meaning springs. His visual artwork often expresses his spiritual state before it can be put into words. Raterman has been a Catholic priest, a Protestant minister and a college professor, among other undertakings. He now describes himself as a postmodern theologian. “Each religion has its own idea about God and life after death, and has its own spirituality,” Raterman says. “Most religions are still based on a pre-Copernican cosmology, with humans and the earth at the centre of the universe. Battles between evolution and creationism are reflective of a very old cosmology.” Raterman says the most important aspect of post-modern thought is the rejection of worldviews that break down under critical thinking, or are not needed by people living in the contemporary world. This development gives him hope for the future of humankind on this planet. “For the first time in human history, we are becoming aware that there is more that unites us than divides us,” Raterman says. “We are developing a new ontological ground from which to address the ancient questions of our species. What are we? Do we have a purpose? Is there anything after this life? Art, starting from this new horizon, will be how we re-image ourselves and set the path for the continuation of the human journey.”

“If you’re an artist, it’s a psychosocial thing. It’s not a job; it’s something you do” Raterman sold his first painting in 1956 when he was an elementary student in his native Ohio. He discovered art through the stained-glass windows, religious paintings and liturgical music at church. At the age of 13, Raterman left home to attend a seminary. He later earned a BA in philosophy, MA in ethics and moral philosophy and a MFA, followed by a master of divinity degree. While working as a Catholic priest in Rochester, NY, Raterman was transferred to Canada. After the church reforms of Vatican II, he left the religion and later became a protestant minister. However, the creation of

art has been constant throughout his life. His paintings’ themes include mortality and the aging process, premonitions, love and sex, landscapes, The Muse and religion. “I’ve always painted or drawn every day,” he says. “If you are an artist, it’s a psychosocial thing. It’s not a job; it is something you do. When I paint, usually the backgound colours come to me first. Often those canvases will sit for months or years until the rest of the painting comes. Generally, a painting takes me anywhere from four months to a couple of years. It can take you a while to figure out conceptually what you’ve done. You know the painting is done when it feels completed.” A gallery on Raterman’s webpage traces his spiritual journey chronologically through his art. He notes the art, music and literature of any given epoch in history shows the spiritual journey of the population. “Each epoch was its own flavour and sound through which you can easily see the philosophy of the age or the Weltanschauung, meaning the world view of the age,” Raterman says. “We are in a cultural change now because of globalization. We’ve had small cultures with their own values and worldviews. With information and travel now being global, we meet these people and they are no longer ‘others.’ Now we know them and that is making us into one planet. We have throwback groups, conservatives trying to conserve their worldview. What some people are waking up to is that we can easily make ourselves extinct. I think that the positive elements of globalization will prevail because this and other matters are now issues.” Though Raterman painted in oils for decades, he switched to acrylic paints when they started being packaged in tubes instead of mouldproducing jars. The fast-drying acrylic paint also proved to be quite flexible. “Acrylics are a very versatile medium,” Raterman says. “You can add things to acrylics, like pencil work, and mix other media with it. You can also make an acrylic painting look like an oil painting. But it doesn’t matter if a painting is oil or acrylic. What matters is whether it is an effective piece or not. Not all art in museums is there because it is good. It

may be there because it has an historical place. It is an illustration of what was going on with a people at that time. Raterman and his wife live in a 40-sided geodesic dome he built himself 43 years ago in Tottenham. Though the 10-acre property was originally not landscaped, the couple planted trees and sculpted the land that is now home to a variety of wildlife. The 4,000-square-foot dome includes a large, upper-level great room and greenhouse. Raterman’s studio is incorporated into his library. The kitchen is the home’s fifth version and the best one. The adjoining dining room’s family-sized table was made from a partially fossilized yellow pine log that was likely felled a millennia ago and floundered during a log drive near Parry Sound. “Huge old-growth logs were floated down from Lake Huron and Superior to saw mills, Raterman says. “Many logs sunk to the bottom of the lake, so were preserved. Now they are being raised and used for building and furniture materials. Domes tend to be always leaky structures, and the couple’s home was no exception. A modification had to be made. Raterman’s decision to build a roof over the structure solved the problem. Says Raterman: “We put up with the leaks for a long time, but you run out of buckets after a while. To see Thomas Raterman’s paintings or for more information about his work, go to zhibit.org/tomraterman or call (905)936-2518.
