It was unseasonably warm as we went to press, a welcome reminder that spring is coming — eventually. And although we will still have to endure wintry weather through March and, let’s face it, at least part of April, we can enjoy longer, sunlit days and start thinking about how we will make the most of the warmer days to come. That’s where this issue comes in. In our pages, you will loads of inspiration for your lifestyle. Check out our home tours for decor ideas from some of the best in the business. Make an easy-peasy one-pot meal that is as delicious as it is nutritious. Or head to town to sample the fare from one of Barrie’s fabulous local restaurants. Just ask the loyal following at Jey’s Burritos, the popular Mexican restaurant featured in our pages. It’s also a great time of year to up your personal wellness. For a no-excuses story, read about Innisfil native Amber Bowman, who overcame a devastating injury to become one of the top trainers in North America. And don’t forget to fuel yourself properly: We’ve got advice on what to eat before and after your workout. Finally, take in Barrie’s annual Spring Arts Tour and let all our local talent inspire your mind and imagination. Happy spring!

Settle Into Spring If you’re looking to take movie night up a notch, what could be better than relaxing on this family-sized sectional? Seen here in ontrend Sparrow Blue, this lovely lounger is available at Barrie’s Aboda Decor, abodadecor.com.
Get in Those Gutters After a long winter of hibernating, it feels good to step out in early spring and get some fresh air while checking off a few home maintenance must-dos. One of the most important jobs to do is cleaning out your gutters. It gives you a chance to look for winter debris and damage, while ensuring they are protecting your home from water damage. Don’t want to climb that ladder? Hire the pros. Doing so will set you back about $154, according to homeadvisor.com. — Rachel Naud
CHORE CHART
Seasonal Swap Embrace the longer, brighter days by changing up your decor. A few ways to put a little spring in your space: • Swap heavier blankets and area rugs to lighter, brighter pieces. • Identify a focal point in every room — a window, a piece of art, a fireplace. Concentrate your decorating efforts on this and let the rest of the room act as support. • Create a fresh, springy centerpiece with greenery, fresh flowers, stones and other natural elements.
Keeping up with seasonal tasks makes yearly maintenance manageable and keeps your home in top shape. This spring, take the time to do the following: • Clear your air conditioner. Remove the snow cover and clear away any debris from the coils. Turn it on for a few minutes so you’ll be confident it will ready to use come summer. • Test your alarms. When the clock springs forward, test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and change the batteries if necessary. • Free your filters. After keeping you warm all winter, your furnace filter is probably full of dust, pet hair and more. Replace it so you can breathe easier come spring. • Get some screen time. Check your screen doors and windows for holes and tears. Screen repair kits can be found at most home improvement stores. — R.N.

Sigrid’s Cafe and Fine Bakery
“Frohe Ostern” Happy Easter from our family to yours! Andrea Higgins Master Baker Nothing says Spring is here and Easter is near like Marzipan filled eggs, tasty and beautifully designed cookies and cakes! And while every day is a great day for baking at Sigrid’s Bakery, master baker Andrea Higgins said Easter and Spring bring with it a number of must-have taste sensations. Easter is the sign of warm weather approaching, along with chocolates and scrumptious challah breads, from fresh daily made hot cross buns, soft knotted bread rings, and tempting butter dough biscuits. “You will love our specialty cakes like our mousse, raspberry, chocolate, strawberry & lemon. Our chocolate, mocha, grand marnier and a trio of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry buttercream cakes are simply irresistible! We also have the “real” Blackforest cake made with fresh cream and Kirchwasser and dark cherries which has been lovingly handed through the generations! For those looking for gift ideas, Sigrid’s also stocks a number of German products including Marzipanbrote (almond bread), Mozart truffels, Niederegger and Schluckwerder. “Our shelves are lined with various European specialty items such and feel free to top off your shopping experience with a treat, or a savory soup & Sandwich on a homemade bread.” The bakery also sells various 100-per-cent peanut-free, gluten-free and dairy-free products, diabetic cookies and cheesecake, as well as gluten-free bread in plain, sunflower and raisin.
“Frohe Ostern” and let’s embrace the spring from all of us here at Sigrid’s!

EXPERT KITCHEN HACK With grilling season just around the corner, we asked a Jeremy Korton, execute chef at Blue Mountain’s Oliver & Bonacini Café Grill, for his advice on cooking the perfect steak. “Buy well-raised, grass-fed beef. Before you cook it, pull it out of the fridge and let it sit on the counter for 20 to 30 minutes, to come to room temperature. Season it with salt and pepper. The meat will absorb the salt and start to sweat, which brings out the moisture, then put it on a hot grill. To determine doneness, mid-rare can take six to seven minutes for a striploin, or a minute or two longer for ribeye. Ribeye is my favourite and best on the barbecue because it has more fat marble, which results in more flavour. When it’s cooked to your liking, pull it off and let it rest. If you cut into it too soon, the juices will run out and your steak will be tough and dry.”

Enroll for a diploma program to kick off a career in the food service industry, or brush up on your home cooking skills, with a course at Liaison College’s Barrie Campus. There are bootcamp-style weekend classes and even cooking camps for kids. Find out more at Liaisoncollege.com. — K.R
LADY in RED
Grapefruits are the often-overlooked sisters of the citrus family, but they’re worth noticing — and sampling — this time of year. They sparkle in your mouth, look beautiful on your kitchen counter, and are more versatile than you might think. Slice one over a spinach salad, eat it straight out of the rind with a spoon or stir the juice into a cocktail, or mocktail. — K.R.
Eighty-seven more grocery stores across the province are set to add alcohol to their shelves this spring, including four in Simcoe County. You may be able to pick up beer and cider at the Zehrs on Byrne Drive in Barrie, Food Basics in Midland, Fresh Co. in Collingwood and Walmart in Orillia as soon as April. — Karen Robock
Case in point Whether you’re an aspiring Martha Stewart, or just hoping to throw dinner together on time with minimal fuss, you need the right tools. Here’s one that you’ve probably been neglecting: your knife set. Most serious cooks will agree: a selection of good quality knives is essential. Oh yeah, and they need to be sharp, too. If you need some help in this department, check out The Restaurant Store where you can shop quality German and Japanese blades and get a free sharpening. (Ask in-store for details). ASK THE EXPERT
“My spring allergies are starting up again. What can I do to get some relief?” Allergy symptoms are the result of an overactive immune system, so I focus on recommending supplements that help balance this response, including bioflavonoids such as quercetin and vitamin C. Probiotics are also beneficial, especially if someone also has digestion-related issues, asthma and/or long-term allergies. Other therapies that may help reduce symptoms include eucalyptus steam inhalation, the use of botanical/herbal extracts in tea, liquid or supplement form, such as nettle root, astragalus, moringa and ginger. Acupuncture can be helpful for symptoms of sinus congestion. Dietary changes can definitely make a difference. I’m a huge fan of onion, fresh garlic and fresh ginger root for anti-inflammatory purposes. I may also recommend reduced consumption of specific inflammatory foods. -— Dr. Heather Goldthorpe, a naturopath in Barrie

HEART
We’re all looking for balance, right? And shortcuts. Enter this sweet, soothing rooibos tea that’s loaded with probiotics to support digestion and immunity, so it’s as good for you as it tastes. Swap it for your regular afternoon or evening cup of tea and you’ve just done yourself — and your gut — a favour. $14.98 per 50g at all David’s Tea locations including the Georgian Mall. — K.R.
A Tottenham church has launched a special dementia-friendly hymn-signing service on Fridays, for people living with dementia and their loved ones. Research has shown that when people are diagnosed with dementia, memories related to their youth can be strongest and often these are tied in with music. The hymn sings are an opportunity for a fun outlet for everyone. St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Tottenham — K.R.
Food for Thought
Need some advice about starting a new diet or ways to eat better? Trish Allan, a clinical nutritionist in Barrie, offers everything from single consultations to year-long “Life Changer” programs. trishallan.com
Before you try Whole 30 or a juice cleanse, talk to your doctor. New research from the European Society of Cardiology has found that very low-calorie eating plans could be damaging for those with heart disease. After one week MRI tests showed higher heart fat content and deterioration of heart function, including its ability to pump blood. By the end of the eightweek study, participants’ heart function improved again, but this initial effect could be problematic for someone with heart disease, say researchers. — K.R.

Flight Plan:
50%
Stopover: Bermuda More than just the baggy shorts and big onions it’s associated with, Bermuda is a connect-the-dot maze of 180 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, on the same latitude as South Carolina, and about a two-hour flight from New York. With a temperate climate, as opposed to tropical, this little paradise is calm and cool, shy and private — a little mysterious. The coral walls and white roofs mimic the sand and clouds, framing the lush landscape and winding narrow roads. Left-hand drive reminds you of its British roots, as does the fairly buttoneddown vibe, a residual of the colonial past. May to September is the best time to visit. TREND: French Flair Give your mani a little pop of colour this spring with French tips in a playful hue. At Alice + Olivia’s Spring/ Summer 2018 show in New York City, Ontario’s Rita Remark designed a sheer nude nail capped off with a strip of teal (Essie’s Garden Variety). It’s a fun take on the classic French manicure and can easily be recreated in any shade — think deep purple, vibrant orange or spicy red — to suit your mood, your outfit or your destination. Hot pink for a beach getaway, anyone? — Andrea Karr
Custom Content Bespoke beauty is the way of the future, and now you can visit your local medi-spa and have them whip up a serum that’s customized specifically for you. The process starts with a consultation to determine your skin needs. Then an aesthetician advises on three active powder ingredients from 19 options to target your problem areas (say, retinol to minimize fine lines or vitamin C to brighten). She’ll blend it into a hydrating and soothing base and, voila, you have an utterly fresh serum with potent, high-efficiency active ingredients to use morning and night. Universkin P Serum, $199, universkin.ca. — A.K.
ONE AND ONLY Say goodbye to bathroom clutter — at least in the hairspray department. Buy just one pretty rose canister of Hold.Me hairspray and you’ll get three different types of hold: light, medium and strong. By adjusting the nozzle, you can control the amount of product released, from a fine mist to a concentrated spray. Choose a lighter hold for loose waves or major control for a complex updo. Hold.Me also protects against heat and UV damage, known for fading colour, and is paraben-, sulphate- and cruelty-free. Design.Me Hold.Me Three Ways Hairspray, $22, designmehair.com. — A.K.
That’s the Scrub Ever opened a beauty product and wanted to eat it? That’s how you’ll feel about L’Oréal Paris’s three new sugar scrubs for different skin concerns. For a healthy glow, choose the scrub for dull skin, with its three fine sugars (found in all the blends) and grapeseed oil. To control oil and blemishes, go for the yummy green option, with kiwi seeds — it promises to purify pores on application. And for a dry, tight face, the cocoa mix will soften and soothe dry patches. If you’re not already exfoliating a few times a week, now’s the time to start. L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Scrubs, $15 each, at mass-market retailers. — A.K.

Basket Case It’s a tricky time of year. Will it rain? Will it snow? Because the answer changes from day to day, your front entrance can start to look like a clothing war zone. Thankfully, Margaret Halos, owner of Living Organized (livingorganized.ca), which serves the Barrie and Alliston areas, has some battle-ready strategies. Bin thinking: “I’m a big fan of baskets and bins,” Halos says. “In almost every closet, there’s space up top where you can put baskets of additional stuff.” Designate one for hats and mitts, she suggests. Or give each family member a basket to use. Separate seasons: “People drop too many coats, jackets and shoes in the front hall closet,” Halos says. Keep only what is in season (with maximum of three) and put the rest in bedroom closets. Rack up: If you have to keep a few footwear options at the ready, buy a shoe rack, Halos says. Then keep the taller boots on the top and shoes on the bottom. That should help keep things tidily at hand.

HOW DESIGNER MADISON TAYLOR AND HER TEAM CREATED THE PERFECT HOME IN ORO-MEDONTE FROM THE GROUND UP BY DAWN RITCHIE
B
uilding a house from scratch is not for the faint of heart. Cost overruns, schedule delays and inattentive tradesmen are commonplace. But, hire the right team, take the time to examine your needs, and it can be an invigorating process that supports the parameters of your life. “We absolutely got everything we wanted,” say the clients of designer Madison Taylor, who are the fortunate beneficiaries of her gallery-inspired design in their Oro-Medonte residence. While still pondering the thought of building, the homeowners visited a spec property Taylor had designed in Snow Valley. They were so impressed they set up a meeting. “We wanted a modern home, minimalistic with clean lines and a black and white theme,” they explained to her. “Modern, but warm, with stone and wood.” Taylor shared their passion for this style so there was an immediate meeting of minds. H.E. Black was brought in as the builder and within nine months of breaking ground, their vision was brought to life.

The home’s open-stringer and glass-railed stariway leading to the second level’s cat walk is exquisite “The architectural design was an insideout approach, Taylor says. “We focused on the furniture, floor plan and the layout of the interiors first, then tackled how it would look on the outside. Inhabit Interiors provided the bulk of the furnishings and Gerri Lighting supplied fixtures. Absolute Cabinets built all of the home’s cabinetry. Taylor and her 11-member firm performed the architectural and interior design, and served as design management. The kitchen is a vision of sleek, fresh functionality. Cabinets are flush and glossy white with Bosch professional line appliances and Caesar stone counters. “It’s a perfectly laid-out kitchen, say the homeowners, who are avid bakers and cooks. “We love the flat panels. It’s so functional — especially the walk-in pantry. Taylor wanted every area in the home to have its own special element. A built-in wine storage area in the kitchen is a feature added as functional decor that meets the storage needs for the homeowners’ wine list. This design theme repeats in the wine bar on the lower level. Lighting was selected to serve as both illumination and as objets d’art. “Tall, simple, clean and black, Taylor says. “Instead of pot lights, we used black pendants over the island with black detailing in the track lighting to give the ceiling more interest as well. A trio of magnificent black LED Ring chandeliers, hung at different levels in the great room, build dimension into the airy space above. It’s these careful details of fluctuating heights that Taylor uses to lift the design from

utility to artistic fulfilment. Since formal dining rooms have fallen out of fashion with today’s lifestyles, Taylor chose to eliminate a room that would seldom get used and instead set the dining area directly adjacent to the kitchen, recessed into a wrap-around glass nook. The table is surrounded on all three sides by the property’s lush forest and imparts the sense of dining right within the woods. “A ton of deer run through there,” Taylor says. Even the rustic table itself appears to belong to the forest. Over the table hangs a marvelous custom Viso chandelier that brings a delicate amount of bling to the otherwise bucolic scene. “It’s the textures and simple elements that give it interest and warmth,” Taylor says. “There are lots of details, but it doesn’t look busy.” Taylor is a designer who possesses the ability to work on the fly, finding inspiration in the happy accidents that normally occur during all construction projects. Originally the Belgiummade all-aluminum windows in this dining nook were set out as two separate windows with a thick strip of black panel separating them. During installation, the middle panel was scratched, and Taylor had it removed to be replaced. But once gone, she realized the clear view was far more interesting and asked if the window would hold its integrity if clear glass were inserted instead. Once assured it would, she had glass installed, achieving an uninterrupted view. A similar event happened in the powder room when river rock was being carried in for the wall feature behind the mirror. Taylor no-

ticed the rocks were stacked on their sides in the crate and loved the look so much she had the stones laid vertically instead of horizontally in a unique pattern akin to a wool rope knit. While the look was distinctive, the grouting was a beast of a job. “If it’s not done right, you have to scrape it back out,” Taylor says. “It was challenging.” The vanity in this powder room was given equal attention to detail. “It’s got an ebony Madagascar veneer,” Taylor explains. “There’s 200 hours of just stitching that veneer together. So much love and care went into that vanity.” And it shows. Part of Taylor’s signature style is her ability to create artful tableaus using structure. She
considers stairways to be sculptures, and the open stringer glass-railed stairway leading to the second level’s catwalk is exquisite. Splitface limestone veneer from Erthworks dresses the wall from basement to loft, and a spectacular Visio chandelier that echoes the look in the dining room dangles from the cathedral ceiling to deliver continuity. “It’s like an experience,” Taylor says about moving from one location in the home to another. The stair treads are blonde wood, a look that repeats in the side railing, flooring, ceiling, catwalk, in shelving and countertops, great room cabinetry, and again in the vanity in one of the two upper bedrooms’ ensuites. This wood flows through the house like a

river, punctuated by the black accents Taylor has implanted, bringing cohesion to the overall design. Atop the upper landing of the loft rests an ebony baby grand with all the attitude of concert readiness. The tableau here possesses the spirit of the Canadian Opera’s Richard Bradshaw Amphitheater. The music drifts down into the great room, where family gather before the beautiful Nero Marquina marble Napoleon fireplace. “Our daughter plays,” the homeowners say. “It’s such a beautiful sound with it up there.” To finish the art installation in this gallerystyled home, Madison Taylor had a threepaneled aerial view of the beach in La Jolla, California, made at the owners’ request — a favourite spot where many happy younger years were spent surfing. It’s the great room’s one big punch of colour, but Taylor once again achieved continuity with throw cushions that duplicated the ocean’s turquoise accents.

What is your favourite colour and signature style? My preferred colour palette falls from both sides of the colour wheel from cool and watery blues and greens to the rich cozy warmth of coffee and caramel. My style is one of simplicity, a classic look reflecting timeless comfort. I love to layer with an assortment of different textures and patterns harmoniously in a space.
How do you help me discover and communicate my style to you? Ideally your own inspiration images will help but I will guide you through a series of questions about what’s already in your home, what’s in your closet, or what type of artwork you like. “You don’t have to understand why you like something, just that you have a positive reaction and we’ll figure out the rest” Darcie says. It’s also important to know how you live day to day to make sure the design will function for your lifestyle.
Where do you find inspiration? I find inspiration through a selection of magazines and I keep up online with Pinterest, Houzz and various blogs. I follow fellow decorators/designers through social media as well. I feel it’s important to stay current especially with what the current offerings are.
What is a successful project to you? It’s always lovely to hear about a beautiful project I’ve completed but it means even more when the client is happy in their space designed to reflect their personality and functionality for their lifestyle.
Whatever your decorating or design dilemma, we are here to help. Let’s talk, call us at 705.734.4061 or visit us online at darciedgardesigns.com for your free in-home consultation.

Elegance in the Woods Set amid the private, serene woodlands of Apto Glen Estates in Springwater, this luxurious contemporary home has all the scenic charms of country living while city life only a short drive away BY PATTI VIPOND

hen Kayla Vanderpost was searching for the perfect design for her first custom home, she often found inspiration on Instagram and Houzz, the modern equivalents of home design sketchbooks. With a beautiful wooded 1.87-acre lot in Apto Glen Estates in Springwater Township ready for ground breaking, Vanderpost had plenty of space and scenery for her family’s future home. An image of a French chateau-style residence resonated with Vanderpost’s own ideas. She showed the photo to architect Lyndsey Tkaczuk, owner of Bailey Designs in Barrie, and the grand home became the basis for Tkaczuk’s elegant, extraordinary two-storey house design for her client. The 4,699-squarefoot home is a chic consolidation of traditional and contemporary style inside and out. It is at once a superb entertainer’s showcase with easy flow between spaces for guests, and a quiet family home with a playroom for kids off the great room. Apto Glen Estates, an enclave of about 30 custom homes on large wooded lots, is located five minutes by car from Hwy. 400 and 10 minutes from Barrie. The proximity to local schools and shopping as well as Springwater Park and the Simcoe County Trails contributed to Vanderpost’s decision to settle here with her young son and his furry friends, a Bernese mountain dog and a blue merle pomeranian. Alair Homes Barrie completed the house in October 2017 after 10 months of construction. The home’s handsome textured stone and stucco exterior is punctuated with large custom windows that fill the interior with natural light. A three-car garage tucked into the side of the house has room for recreational vehicles or a workshop. An inside door leads to the home’s mudroom where there is ample space to wipe dirty paws and stow outerwear and other paraphernalia. At the home’s entrance, double front doors framed by sidelights and a transom window lead into a grand foyer. A 12-foot glass bead waterfall chandelier ornaments the hall’s 22-foot cathedral ceiling. The foyer’s marble patterned porcelain tile flooring is repeated in the home’s five bathrooms. Durable bamboo flooring was installed throughout the rest of the five-bedroom house.

The custom, gourmet kitchen is one of the home’s most impressive rooms and is Luisa Almeida’s favourite. Each cabinet is a piece of furniture with distressed painted edging for an old-world effect. The kitchen also includes a bar space with its own prep sink and wine fridge.
High-end appliances include a stainless steel side-by-side fridge and freezer and a Bosch double-oven gas range. Smooth quartz countertops and marble backsplash add an opulent touch.

“All of the chandeliers in the house came from Union Lighting in Toronto, except for the one in the foyer which is from Sescolite Lighting in Toronto,” says Vanderpost, who chose upgraded lighting to illuminate her home. “I looked for a foyer chandelier for a long time. Because the foyer is so tall, I needed a fixture that was long enough, and this one was perfect. It’s gorgeous and modern.” Curved double sets of staircases in the foyer echo the double front doors. Two staircases ascend to the home’s upper level while another pair travel down to the unfinished basement. At the top of the upper level stairs, a wide balcony gives a panoramic view of the main floor great room. “I always liked the grand look of a double staircase as you walk into a house,” Vanderpost says. “In the interior design plan, I decided to include staircases going up on either side and two staircases going downstairs. The staircases frame the entry to the great room.” To the right of the upper level balcony, double doors lead to the spacious master suite. Accented with crown moulding, the quiet comfortable room has a sitting area and custom his-and-hers walk-in closets. The five-piece ensuite includes a deep freestanding white soaker tub, huge glass-walled shower with soothing rain showerhead, double-sink vanity and multifunctional Ove Smart toilet. “The master suite was designed to be private,” Vanderpost says. “It was built in its own separate wing.” To the left side of the upstairs balcony, a convenient laundry room with lots of counter space for folding clothes and three generous bedrooms are ready for family members or guests. Two bedrooms share a well-equipped Jack-andJill bathroom with a large shower and dual vanities with double sinks. The third bedroom has its own four-piece ensuite. The bedrooms and master suite are decorated in the tranquil neutral hues that are used throughout the residence. The soft grays and whites give the home a contemporary look that complements its luxurious finishes and furnishings.

“The main colour we used in the house was Coventry Gray by Benjamin Moore,” Vanderpost says. “For the the kitchen, we used a different shade on the same colour swatch, called Stonington Gray, to make the kitchen one shade lighter than the great room. We decided to use lots of whites and grays in the interior design to give the house a calm, clean feeling.” On the main floor, a soaring wall housing a striking double-sided Napoleon gas fireplace separates the great room and gourmet kitchen. Entryways placed on either side of the wall define boundaries but allow for an openconcept feel. What looks like a wood finish on the wall is actually patterned porcelain tile. In the great room, banks of windows brighten the gathering space and give expansive views across the backyard to the trees beyond. A playroom, which could also be a second media room, and the dining room border the great room. The dining room’s wide windows bring outdoor views inside to add beauty to festive occasions and family meals. The bedroom on the main floor, complete with its own powder room, is a private place for guests to enjoy. Each room was scaled to create a balanced floor plan that works for Vanderpost’s family. The custom gourmet kitchen, designed by RockWood Kitchens in Barrie, is one of the home’s most impressive rooms. A scattering of pot lights complement the trio of silver candle pendants above a 10 ft. white centre island fitted with custom cabinetry, a stainless steel dishwasher, prep sink and breakfast bar. The soaring feature wall that houses the double-sided Napolean fireplace, also serves to separate the great room from the gourmet kitchen. Entryways on either side allow for an open-concept feeling, and what looks like finished wood on the wall is actually patterned porcelain tile.

“I always liked the grand look of a double staircase as you walk into a house” appliances include a side-by-side refrigerator and freezer, and a Bosch double oven gas range. Smooth quartz counters and the marble arabesque-patterned backsplash add an opulent look. The kitchen also includes a bar station with its own prep sink and wine fridge, and a butler’s pantry with custom floor to ceiling cabinetry that holds everything needed to prepare meals and set a beautiful table. A sunny dining nook in the kitchen, perfect for casual family meals or reading the paper over a second cup of coffee on weekends, overlooks a wide outdoor deck off the kitchen. The impressive back yard is currently sodded and has the potential to become an outdoor oasis with room for a pool, gardens and a gazebo. Vanderpost enjoyed the process of planning and building her first custom home, but admits the amount of details and decisions needed to create the house was more than expected. “It’s a lot of work to build your own house because you have to pick out everything from door handles to trim to light fixtures,” she said with a smile. “But in the end, all the work is absolutely worth it.” This home at 4 Moran Street in Springwater has been listed at $1,895,000 by Mark Faris of Royal LePage First Contact Realty, The Faris Team, Brokerage in Barrie. When interior designer Terri Clark and her husband, Ken, were looking for a home in Barrie 29 years ago, she knew it had to be a house with character. After a discouraging search, their real estate agent persuaded them to see just one more. For Terri and the little white character house on Maple Avenue, it was love at first sight

ou hear stories about homebuyers falling in love with a house from the curb, or from the foyer or while standing in a room that would be a perfect nursery. Interior designer Terri Clark fell in love with a little white house in Barrie as soon as it came into view through her real estate agent’s car window. “We had spent a day looking at houses and I didn’t see anything with character,” recalls Terri, a successful self-taught interior designer and principal of Terri Clark Interiors in Barrie. “From street level, I wanted a house that had character. That was super-important to me. Our agent said there was one more house just up the street. I didn’t want to see it, but before I could get out of the car he was off. As soon as I saw this little white house, I said, ‘That’s the house!’ I didn’t even go inside. It was a double lot, so there was room to move. My husband thought I was insane because the house was lacking what a big subdivision house would give you. But all these years later, here we are so we got that right.” Purchasing the 1924 character house on Maple Avenue was only the first step in a long process that eventually turned it into the Clark’s family home. In 1979, previous owners had added a backsplit with two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, and a den and furnace room downstairs. In 2010, Ken and Terri GoodLifeMagazine.ca | 43

tore down the home’s original footprint, but engineered and underpinned the backsplit. Terri’s design for the home’s new main floor and basement demonstrated her considerable talent for space planning. The main floor was expanded 12 feet sideways in both directions to encompass a chef ’s kitchen with adjoining cedar deck, cathedral-ceilinged dining room, chic and serene living room, modern laundry room and a stylish powder room. What had been a carport became the living room and the driveway was relocated. The house’s new stone exterior with wood accents was designed to maintain the integrity of the established residential area in downtown Barrie. The new basement was excavated and accessed by stairs from the backsplit’s den. Heated travertine flooring in the basement, as well as in the kitchen and foyer, was installed to keep things cosy year round. The space includes a gym, complete with an inanimate sparring partner named Bob, and a spacious airy office for Terri’s business. Rows of custom

The basement’s bedroom, with its own three-piece bathroom and roomy kitchenette, makes a private and comfortable guest suite. “My son and his wife moved into the basement suite until they got established when they moved back from Vancouver,” Terri recalls. “It was perfect because they had their private own space.” Terri mixed traditional decor elements, like the living room’s rustic beams and shiplap ceiling, with clean-lined contemporary furniture and finishings to create a transitional interior. Some pieces, like the dining room’s large circular chandelier from the Glass Lighting Gallery in Barrie, combine traditional and contemporary design aspects. “Traditional design is lovely and you can do wonderful things with it, but you can also merge the traditional and contemporary together for a transitional look,” Terri says. “It’s a fresher take on today’s living.”

Since the upper floor is only three steps up, the light floods in through the bedrooms toward the front of the house The home’s interior colour palette is a selection of calming neutrals. “Having a neutral interior throughout the house was purposely planned,” Terri. says “The brick on the living room’s back wall, although very neutral, plays a big part in the impact of that room. The house’s interior design is very transitional with a little bit of everything. We layered in all kinds of textures and used very organic materials, like wood and wicker accent pieces. Every room was thoroughly thought out so that we used every inch of it.” The home’s wide centre hall separates the kitchen and long butler’s pantry. Off of the pantry is a powder room with a stone accent wall and a vanity fashioned by Terri from an old buffet. Next door, a laundry room, with an overflow fridge, is lined with custom cabinetry by Absolute Cabinets in Barrie. Sets of long windows in the dining and living rooms, as well as the windows in the two spacious upstairs bedrooms, flood the home with natural light. Even the lower-level den, which is Ken’s favourite domain, has fullsized ground level windows that keep things cheery.

The gourmet cooking possibilities provided by high-end stainless steel appliances have let the Clarks entertain deliciously many times over the years. The gorgeous outdoor utopia’s lush gardens, screened-in gazebo, pergola, patios, sheds and serene pond with gentle waterfall were entirely planned and built by Ken and Terri. “I designed the yard and we built everything together,” Terri says. “My potting shed has carrara marble that was left over from the old kitchen. We decided to build an outdoor kitchen, which is wonderful. Ken built another shed near by for storage. The gazebo in the back corner is 14 feet by 14 feet, so you can have a group in there. We

also did all the landscaping by hand. It’s a great yard where everything flows.” After educating herself in the art of interior design, Terri began her career 18 years ago. Her first big project was designing the model suite, interior hallways, lobby and outdoor lighting for the upscale Roxborough Condominiums in Barrie in 2004. Working later for Sears Canada, the designer had the opportunity to do fashion shows across the country and design ‘ultimate’ living rooms and bedrooms for ‘ultimate’ soap-opera stars from The Young and the Restless. Now working mainly on residential projects, Terri continues to be a self-admitted house junkie who loves to study floor plans and discover whether they work or not. “I’m addicted to floor plans,” she says. “I can feel myself live in them. I guess that’s why I’m good at navigating floor plans for my clients.” Ken and Terri’s future plans involve building a home in the country. No doubt, that home will be white. “I’ve always loved white houses, but I didn’t realize how much until Ken pointed it out,” Terri says. “Every time we drove somewhere and I’d say ‘Look at that house,’ he would say, ‘It’s white.’ I didn’t make this house white because I wanted it to fit in with the street. We are now striving to build a contemporary farmhouse — probably a white one.” This home at 148 Maple Ave., Barrie, is listed for $1,199,000 by Peggy Hill of the Peggy Hill Team at Keller Williams Experience Realty, Brokerage. State of the Art FAMILY DENTISTRY ALL UNDER ONE ROOF Why your “cleaning” could save your life. Barrie Primary Care Campus
Why your “cleaning” could save your life. Everyone knows that swelling and bleeding mean that something is wrong. A swollen twisted ankle or a nasty infected wound often take people to an emergency room. However not everyone realizes that red, swollen or bleeding gums should also be immediately addressed. Gingivitis, while commonplace, can be an indicator that other serious health changes can be occurring throughout the body. The swelling that is seen in gingivitis is inflammation. Inflammation is our

body’s response to cellular injury. Our body swells up to try to rid the body of the initial cause of injury and to try to reduce further damage. However, the chemicals that our own body releases to stop the problem can end up being a longer term inflammatory response. Studies are showing that our full body health and our oral health are very closely linked. The inflammation we see in the mouth may also be present in the heart, liver and circulatory system. Those bleeding gums can be the first visible sign that you have other medical conditions. If you have other medical conditions, a gum infection like

gingivitis or periodontal disease can just add to the stress that your body is under. Dental professionals are trained to diagnose and treat all types of oral disease. Whether it be a localized gingivitis brought on by pregnancy, or an advanced case of periodontal disease caused by an aggressive strain of bacteria, there are treatments and home care regimes available. The dentist and hygienist will assess the condition and then monitor the healing. Just as a doctor may prescribe statin medication, your hygienist can make recommendations to use specific preventative oral care products. The hygienist will also remove plaque and hard deposits to help your body fight the infection and reduce inflammation.
The length of time between your cleaning appointments is determined based on how you are responding to the treatment. In some cases, if a person does not respond to treatment, a medical consultation may be warranted. Dental and medical professionals work together to determine your risk factors and condition. The professionals at the Barrie Smile Centre want to treat your whole body health. They will educate you about your level of inflammation and disease and advise you how to treat it. They will also work with your doctor should that be necessary. The Barrie Smile Centre wants to keep you smiling for many healthy years to come!
Dr. Amir Guorgui and
Dr. Robert Eisen have been providing exceptional dental care in Barrie Smile Centre for over twenty years. "When I was creating the menu, I decided to include all of my favourite Mexican recipes. Everything we make is from the heart” To learn more about this popular 12-seat Mexican grill, GoodLife recently sat down with the restaurateur, who set up shop in July 2017. What led you and your wife, Laruscia, to open up a restaurant in Barrie? JT: When I started in the restaurant business 19 years ago, I always dreamed of owning my own business. After honing my skills at some of the busiest restaurants in Toronto, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, I decided it was time to take the plunge. Barrie was an ideal location, because we had moved to Innisfil four years earlier, and I really fell in love with the lifestyle up here. Why focus on Mexican cuisine?

JT: The first chef I worked with in the restaurant industry was Mexican. He taught me everything I know about Mexican cuisine and I have loved it ever since. Even though my background is Sri Lankan, I’m super-passionate about Mexican food because it’s so delicious.

Over the past decade, Mexican restaurants have started to grace the restaurant landscape. Why have these restaurants been flourishing? Mexican food is a much healthier choice compared with other fast-food options, such as burgers and fries. I also think Canadians have grown to appreciate Mexican cuisine as many vacation in Mexico. What’s on the menu? We serve up freshly made tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, soups, salads and churros. Customers have the opportunity to really customize their orders because we have so many options for fillings, meats and sauces. What are some of the most popular items? Ground beef tacos, chicken burritos and nachos are what people order the most. But my personal favourite is the pulled pork burrito. When I was creating the menu, I decided to include all of my favourite Mexican recipes. I love all of the dishes that we serve here. Everything we make is from the heart. What’s the secret to making great-tasting Mexican food? The key is to always use fresh ingredients and make almost everything in-house from scratch. Fresh spices, lots of lime juice — always freshly squeezed — and fresh cilantro are particularly important. I also strongly believe in sourcing local ingredients to create a taste that hits the right spot.
Spacious & Relaxing Atmosphere
Looking forward to pampering you this Spring
Your brightly coloured chalkboard menu has plenty of delicious options, but is there a kids’ menu? We don’t have an official kids’ menu, but we’re happy to make simple cheese quesadillas, beef and cheese burritos or nachos with beans and cheese. Because we make everything to order, we’re pretty accommodating.

Judging from your Facebook Page and other social media sites, local diners have a soft spot for Jey’s Burritos and give you excellent reviews. Their kind words mean a lot to us. My wife and I work really hard to make our customers happy. We’re small business owners who are putting in long hours to make our business a success so we can support our young family. The restaurant has grown from word of mouth and through repeat customers. We are very grateful for their support. Any interesting future plans? Right now, it’s a pretty small dine-in and take out place. In time, I would love to take it to the next level with an expansion, a larger menu, extra staff and a liquor licence. “Walking in to the salon, I was warmly greeted by Jamie, Ivo and all of the staff. Before I knew it, there was a coffee in my hand just the way I like it, and Jamie was working her magic. It was way past time for a change, and I love the one I got yesterday. Jamie is the consummate professional, so very good at advising - gently but confidently - and then executing the plan like the artist she has become. She made very sure that the updated look was something I wanted for myself not just something she wanted for me.” ~ Susan Stewart “This is the only place that has given me the haircut and colour I’ve been looking for. Stacey is brilliant! She understands and is absolutely skilled at giving me the results I want.” “Thanks for the amazing job you did on my hair Stacey! Resistance Is Not Futile Want to up your exercise game? Look to resistance bands. Not only are they easy to use, they are also versatile and incredibly effective. You use them to create resistance (hence the name) to more deeply work your muscles. Because movement becomes harder as the band lengthens, exercises become more dynamic — with other equipment, the weight remains static throughout any movement. The result is increased muscle and bone strength. If you’re ready to get with the band, consider buying a variety — looped and straight, flat and tubular, lighter and heavier — to mix things up and work your whole body.

WHY SNACKING MATTERS
Fuel Up! THESE MINI MEALS WILL BOOST ENERGY BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER YOU SWEAT BY LIZ BRUCKNER
Y
ou’re pretty fit. You go easy on the sugary stuff, adjust your training game every few months and hit the weights as often as you can. But if you want your body to continue performing like a finely tuned ma-
chine, how you fuel it before and after a workout matters. Whether you’re enduring an intense spinning session or a less taxing neighbourhood jog, top your tank with these dietitian-approved workout snacks and mini meals.
Consuming a mix of protein and carbohydrates pre- and post-workout not only keeps you feeling satisfied as you sweat, it helps minimize fatigue as your body undergoes strenuous activity during and after your workout, says Angela Wallace, a registered dietitian with clinics in Vaughan and Caledon. Snacking before you sweat is key because it fuels your body for the task ahead. “Snacking on protein supports muscles through impending activity, but also leaves you feeling satisfied and able to complete the workout, while consumed carbs break down into glucose, which feeds muscles during activity,” she says. “The body also stores some of this glucose as glycogen, which can be used during more intense activity — on a long-distance run, for example.” Post-workout, refuelling with carb- and protein-rich foods is necessary to help replenish energy while also helping muscles recover and repair. “You need to eat after you work out for a few reasons,” Wallace says. “You need to build up your stores of glycogen that may have been used during your workout, replace the calories you’ve burned, and feed your muscles with protein, especially after a weight-training session.” Here’s what you should nosh on before and after your sweat session.

Before a light yoga class… A banana or apple with nut or seed butter yields the perfect balance of carbohydrates and protein your body needs to feel energetic and satisfied throughout the workout, Angela Wallace says. Before an intense weight-training class… Oatmeal is one of your best options before a tough workout because it’s digested very slowly, allowing for a gradual release of glucose into the blood stream. Before a quick gym workout or run… A small fruit/nut butter/water-or-milk smoothie can deliver the perfect carb-protein mix. This helps your body maintain its endurance while providing support to your muscles during the activity, Wallace says. After a killer spin class… A simple Greek salad with chicken provides the fibre, protein and other important nutrients your body needs following a sweaty workout. Need an extra jolt of energy? Wallace suggests adding a small smoothie (for example, ½ banana, ½ cup of berries, almond milk, plus 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds) to the mix. After hot yoga… A veggie omelette with avocado offers a great combo of protein, complex carbs and healthy fats that will both satisfy hunger and feed your muscles. After a total-body training session… Try grilled or broiled salmon with sweet potatoes and veggies. Loaded with protein, complex carbs and healthy fats, it’s a great way to help your body refuel and recover. Worked your muscles extra hard? Wallace suggests adding beans to your meal for more protein benefits.

Nutrition in Flight? Airline food isn’t exactly synonymous with delicious, healthy choices. But according to a recent study by Charles Platkin, director of the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center, some airlines are changing that assumption. Of 12 major airlines whose snacks and on-board food offerings were looked at, four contenders crowded into the top two spots: Delta and Virgin airlines share the top spot for healthiest food choices in the sky, with our very own Air Canada tied with JetBlue for second place. The study praised Air Canada for keeping nutrients high and calories low for meals, but chided the company for not including nutritional information and ingredients on the menu. JetBlue garnered similar accolades, with an additional star for posting nutritional information on its website; the airline lost points, however, for not offering healthy snacks, such as its fruit bar, for free.

Safer Travels Here’s why you should buy insurance along with your plane ticket BY DOUG WALLACE
WARNING: This list is a bit of a downer, as it involves catastrophic life events we’d all rather not think about, let alone plan for. But being prepared for emergencies is super-smart, however unpleasant the subject matter. Travel insurance is an essential part of travel, full stop. Without it, you’re leaving yourself open to all sorts of problems, some of them devastating, most of them financial. The truth is, you can’t afford not to buy insurance of some kind. Here is a three-step pre-step: 1. Fully wrap your head around what travel insurance is included with your credit cards. Keep in mind that that insurance only works if you use that particular card to purchase said travel. 2. Check to see if your workplace insurance has travel insurance benefits you can take advantage of. Maybe that’s all you need, but you won’t know unless you invest the time to read the fine print. And if you don’t understand the fine print, telephone the insurance provider and start asking questions. 3. Frequent travellers should shop around for a good, general annual plan that will let them skip the add-on insurance packages that travel websites try to sell you on the fly as you’re booking online, often playing to your insecurities.

You’re either one of those people who won’t leave home without it or someone who just throws caution to the wind — at your peril. Lost luggage aside, here are eight reasons why you need travel insurance:
Cellulite Reduction Weight Management
1. Trip cancellation. Plans can change, and if yours change more than most, a potential cancellation is more of a consideration. 2. Trip interruption. A billion things can cut short your trip of a lifetime — and none of them need be of your own doing. 3. Medical emergencies. There’s no way you want to be ill in a foreign country without insurance. You could end up losing your home and/or your life savings. 4. Acts of God: Earthquakes, mudslides, forest fires, hurricanes and worse. Ruff Haus is Barrie’s favorite facility designed just for dogs!
RUFF HAUS
At Ruff Haus,Your Dog Is Family By Patti Vipond When the furry member of your family needs training, grooming or daycare services, it’s essential to find a company that will care for them like family members. In the Barrie area, that company is Ruff Haus. Owner Kelly Johnson, a Certified Trainer and Behaviour Consultant, and her professional staff know the success of Ruff Haus is based on doing exactly that. “We pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service that treats every client and dog like family,” says Johnson, who was a trainer at the popular dog daycare, training and grooming business before becoming
the owner in June 2016. “We’re very committed to every single dog who comes to Ruff Haus. They aren’t just dogs. They are our family.” Each dog at Ruff Haus will enjoy stress-free grooming, rewards-based training and a fun, safe daycare experience. Last year, Ruff Haus was voted Best Dog Daycare in the Barrie Advance Readers’ Choice Awards and was recently voted Top Daycare & Grooming in Barrie in the Top Choice Awards. When asked why her company is thriving, Johnson knows immediately. “I have to give credit to my amazing staff,” she says about her two groomers

and five daycare attendants. “They go above and beyond every single day. They know our clients’ dogs like they know their own and love working with them. It is definitely our passion.” Ruff Haus holds three annual fundraisers for rescues and non-profit organizations in Simcoe County and offers free training classes for dogs in foster care. Ruff Haus is located at 304B Dunlop St. West, Unit 5 in Barrie. To make an appointment for your dog or for more information, please call 705-739-7833,emailinfo@ruffhaus.ca or go to www.ruffhaus.ca.

It features a daytime lunch counter and deli that remains open on Wednesday evenings for takeout dinner catering. • Now hear this. Enjoy a soothing sensory dip — minus the water — with a sound bath, a meditative ritual that usually involves a facilitator playing crystal singing bowls. Bikram Yoga Plus Coachella Valley, Evolve Yoga La Quinta and other studios host this wellness practice on select dates. For the ultimate sound bath experience, visit the storied Integratron up in the high desert town of Landers near Joshua Tree. In the 1950s, Ufologist George Van Tassel claimed a Venusian alien instructed him to build this acoustically perfect structure. Helpful hint: Book well in advance, as these sonic healing sessions are very popular. • Really retreat. Chiropractor, certified yoga instructor and physical rehab specialist Eden Goldman hosts yoga and mindfulness retreats at La Quinta Resort & Club, nestled at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains in La Quinta. Retreat highlights encompass healthy menus and cleansing practices, yoga and meditation classes, and optional additional excursions that take advantage of wellness activities found throughout the destination. round now, people are yearning for signs that spring has actually arrived. The calendar may say it has, but the weather seems to be making a case for winter’s persistence. How can one be sure? For residents of Simcoe County, it’s very simple. The season has arrived when spring peepers are singing in the marshes, buckets are hooked to maple trees to gather sap, and lampposts on Barrie’s Dunlop are festooned with beautiful hand-painted banners proclaiming the arrival of the annual Barrie Spring Art Tour. This year, those banners are part of the celebration of the tour’s successful
decade of bringing art lovers and local artists together at galleries, studios and other artistic venues in the Barrie area. The Barrie Spring Art Tour’s 10th anniversary show takes place April 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 13 locations in and around the city. Art lovers, art loverwannabes and anyone who enjoys a fun day exploring interesting places are invited to experience unique artwork and meet the 26 exceptional local artists who create it. Locations on the free, self-directed tour are sited in clusters, making each an easy walk or short drive from each other.

“The artists who participate in the Barrie Spring Art Tour are fine art makers,” renowned painter and tour co-ordinator Mary Lynne Atkinson says. Her Midhurst studio is one of the tour’s locations. “A little more than half of the tour’s stops are open studios that are usually only open by appointment. The spring tour gives people an inside look at where the magic happens. Some come back every year to see what their favourite artists are doing now. Visitors on the tour want to see what’s new and what’s up. At the same time, they often discover the work of other artists.” The inaugural Barrie Spring Art Tour was held in June 2009. For a few years, it was moved back to May, but in the end, April ultimately proved to be the optimum month. As well as making this tour one of Barrie’s first arts events of the year, April is the kindest month for displaying its 40 beautiful banners outdoors. “We couldn’t get the banners up until the snow was gone,” founder, co-ordinator and artist Bonnie Ryerson says. “Now it’s always in April between Easter and Mother’s Day when there isn’t too much going on. We’ve shown every type of art on the tour including paintings, glasswork, jewellery, pottery and wire sculpting. The original artists were mainly members of the Barrie Art Club.” Tour co-founder and co-ordinator Carol Mueller notes the event found immediate popularity during its first year, and visitor numbers have continued to grow. She attributes part of that to the high visibility of its innovative, eyecatching banners. “I think the first thing that really pushed the tour off were the banners,” Mueller says. “The

artists created them with the show’s logo and information on one side, and a hand-painted piece of art on the other. The city hung the banners on lampposts along the main street from Mulcaster Street to Maple, and in the city hall rotunda, and has done that each spring.” Mueller was president of the Barrie Art Club when Ryerson suggested it would be a good idea for Barrie to have a spring art tour like other Ontario communities. “Bonnie called me and said do you think this would work?” Mueller says. “I immediately said yes. Linda Throop, who now lives in Nova Scotia, designed a stylized fountain logo for the tour. We recruited a few other people and put together a brochure. As soon as we told local artists about the idea, everyone jumped on board.” The Barrie Art Club was an inaugural partner of the tour along with the City of Barrie Cultural Department and a group of local sponsors. The club continues to be a location on the tour, hosting about 10 artists annually. Support for the tour has increased over the years along with the size of the crowds. “The Barrie BIA supports us generously to help with the brochure and advertising, and the Barrie Art Club has been very supportive year over year,” Atkinson says. “We also have wonderful advertisers and people who help us in kind. Cravings Fine Food Market & Catering Company in Barrie puts on the opening night reception and caters all the food.”

Fans and the public are invited to attend the tour’s opening night reception at The Edge Gallery at 32 Dunlop St. W. from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gallery owner Kate Ramos looks forward to hosting the party and welcoming the tour artists who will show in her gallery. For the past nine years, Ramos has organized the event’s website and brochure, and greets more than 200 tour visitors annually. “I really enjoy meeting new people and experiencing all the excitement before and during the weekend,” says Ramos, who specializes in creating highly textured paintings for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). She recently completed a 30-by-40foot textured wall mural for the new CNIB Community Hub in Toronto. Artist Silvija Hord manages advertising and communications for the tour. She feels the event is not only an important way for the public to meet artists, but also a wonderful way for artists to get together with other artists. “Artists tend to be alone working in their studios and may feel isolated,” says Hord, who is known for her contemporary abstract acrylic paintings. “It gives them a chance to see what everyone is working on. Artists are usually very excited to see the new things their colleagues are doing.” Hord has also seen first-hand the great interest visitors have in meeting artists on the tour to discuss the reasons for their techniques and find out the inspiration behind their art. “Often they will speak to an artist to learn the story behind, for instance, a painting that has caught their attention,” said Hord. “That connection with the painting is often why they decide to buy it. Every time they see it on the wall, they will think about the story behind it, feel how much they enjoy the piece and remember the artist who created it. That connection is why it ‘s wonderful to have this studio tour.” The 10th Barrie Spring Art Tour is on April 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour’s opening reception is April 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Edge Gallery at 32 Dunlop St. in Barrie. Wizard of Oz WITH PERSISTENCE AND PASSION, INNISFIL NATIVE AMBER BOWMAN OVERCAME A DEVASTATING SETBACK TO BECOME ONE OF THE TOP TRAINERS IN NORTH AMERICA BY JEREMY GRIMALDI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIM CRAIGMYLE

hen Amber Bowman won the Dr. Oz Next Great Trainer contest in January, it was the fulfillment of her life’s two passions: nutrition and physical activity. “I always said I wanted to be on TV and help the world,” the Innisfil native says. Now she’ll have her chance. As the contest’s winner, Bowman will have periodic guest spots on The Dr. Oz Show to talk about health issues ranging from micronutrients to prenatal care. Still, the win took her by surprise. “I had convinced myself that I was not going to win,” she says. “I think what resonated with people is that my story is real. I live this life every day.”
While beating out thousands of other candidates is phenomenal, it’s not nearly as remarkable as the personal tests and battles Bowman has met and overcome in her 33 years. When she was six years old, she discovered her love of hockey and began playing in boys’ leagues before moving onto girls’ teams by Grade 10, when she joined the Aurora Panthers. Through hard work and dedication, Bowman eventually landed a position with the elite Toronto Aeros, a professional women’s hockey team, and then a full scholarship with the Ohio State University Buckeyes.

Throughout these years and on into the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, Bowman played with a number of Olympic stars, including current TSN broadcaster Tessa Bonhomme. “We were the pioneers for these girls who play now and are getting paid,” Bowman says. After five seasons, she retired and became a civilian trainer for the Canadian Forces, as an elite fitness and sports trainer at Base Borden. “It was very patriotic,” Bowman says, adding that she found it deeply rewarding to help soldiers readjust after returning from combat zones. It was during those years that a supervisor told her she’d do well as a firefighter in the military. “I hadn’t really thought about it until then,” she says. Instead of joining the military, though, Bowman went the civilian route and joined Central York Fire Services in Newmar-
ket in 2011, becoming the first of three female firefighters in the department. “Aside from the bathroom situation, it wasn’t that big of an adjustment,” Bowman says, explaining how a new women’s washroom had to be installed. “It was like playing boys’ hockey growing up. Once that helmet goes on, you can’t tell who is who. My life hasn’t changed that much from being an athlete to a career firefighter.” Although well versed in being a member of a team, Bowman got a taste of what it takes to excel as an individual while competing in the Firefighter Combat Challenge, a famously intense obstacle course inspired by real firefighter work. It was during these competitions — engaging in events like the hose hoist, victim rescue and forcible entry — where her athletic star began to shine. She not only won a slew of world champi-

onships in exotic locales around the world, but she also broke the women’s world record by completing the demanding course in under two minutes. By 2017, she was the most victorious competitor in event history, with 22 world championships in just seven years. To fund the competitions, which cost $12,000 a year, Bowman created FitbyFire, her own fitness, coaching and nutrition website, which has further funded nine other women to travel to the events. However, trips to the top rarely come without a few falls along the way, and Bowman had a serious one of her own in 2015, when, during a workout, she dropped a 100-pound barbell on her face. “I thought I was going to be paralyzed,” she says. “It was two minutes before I could move my legs or feet at all. I didn’t know if I would be a firefighter or run or play sports again.” In the following months, Bowman was forced to stay in bed, suffering debilitating headaches and dizziness each time she stood up or even tried to eat. But now she realizes this setback turned out to be for the best. “I had to realign, refocus my energy on who I was,” she says. “At that moment, lying there, not knowing if I was a paraplegic or not, I ruled out the meaningless things in my life quite quickly and the important stuff stayed.” Bowman believes it was the lessons learned from this incident that helped propel her to victory in the Dr. Oz contest after randomly applying following a fitness conference. “It’s been surreal and superhumbling,” she says. “I’ve heard from people from every stage of my life since winning. You rarely hear this much good stuff about people until their funeral, so to hear it now is humbling.” As for her career, she says appearing on Dr. Oz won’t change her as a person, but will certainly alter the platform to deliver her message. “I just have more reach,” she says. “I’m on a bigger platform across North America. I’d like to expand this now to a global scale.” Despite her growing fame, Bowman stays grounded with her simple mantra: Be the best version of you in that moment. “We don’t have to be perfect physically or nutritionally,” she says. “We just have to be a bit better than the day before.” Find out more at fitbyfire.com.

hen it comes to running a restaurant, chef Randy Feltis likes to think outside the box. “Let’s face it, most restaurants don’t make a big profit, so you have to look at different revenue streams to make it work,” says Feltis, the CityLine celebrity chef who owns and operates the Farmhouse restaurant in Barrie with his wife, Sarah Jackson. So, along with being open 365 days a year for breakfast, lunch and dinner (a rarity in the casual dining business) and operating a bustling wedding business with three onsite officiants, the Farmhouse now offers overnight accommodation. “It’s all about evolving and surviving,” Feltis says. And he should know: He’s who has been a fixture on the local food scene since 1999, when he opened Oscar’s Bistro. Located on the third floor of the restaurant, the overnight suite is truly unique. Along with a fabulous view of Kempenfelt Bay, the heritage brick building is rich in local history and architectural character. Originally constructed in 1907 to house the Allandale Railway YMCA, it offered overnight accommodation to the railway men who were awaiting their next run. “By offering an overnight suite, we feel like we’ve brought the place back to its original roots,” Feltis says. “People love the legacy of this building, and we love the idea of making it more accessible to them.” Before the recent renovation, the space was rented out as an office. Years ago, it was used as an apartment. The 1,500-square-foot suite, which sleeps eight, showcases three bedrooms, kitchen with bar seating, large living room, dining room, large skylight, sauna and spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower. The decor is farmhouse rustic and features cowhide rugs, tractor-style bar seats, plaid bedspreads (Feltis jokingly refers to them as Dalrymple, the small town he grew up in, dinner-jacket bedspreads) and paintings of farmyard animals and colourful vegetables. “There’s a real wow factor to the place,” he says. “As soon as visitors open the door, they’ll realize that they’ve scored big-time. It’s unlike anything else that’s available in Barrie and it has this super cool vibe.” It’s also in keeping with the couple’s vision for the Farmhouse. “By offering an overnight suite, we feel like we’ve brought the place back to its original roots. People love the legacy of this building, and we love making it more accessible to them
in 2013, their goal was to showcase their love for rustic, farm fresh ingredients and events big and small. “Our food philosophy has always been keep it fresh, keep it simple, Feltis says. Since then, the Farmhouse has hosted more than 225 weddings and corporate events, along with serving up food in its busy restaurant. Recently, Feltis and Jackson purchased the historic building. “We pay a mortgage now, not rent, and that’s a big deal for restauranteurs, he says. Looking to the future, if the suite gets booked regularly, the plan is to add a second smaller unit on the fourth floor. “It will be great for wedding parties, Feltis says. The best thing about the new suite? “The waterfront view is pretty amazing, and the fact that you can stroll downstairs for breakfast in the morning is pretty awesome, he says. “It’s also a great way to show off Barrie to visitors. Considering that the century building is said to be haunted by the ghost of a cleaning lady who was murdered there years ago (legend has it that she likes to rattle the glasses and turn the TVs off and on), will visitors be told about the possible paranormal resident? “Oh, yeah, sure, he says. “But from what I understand, she mostly hangs out on the second floor. Having said that, I’m sure we’ll hear some stories and I look forward to them. The Farmhouse suite opened in February 2018, and is available to book through Airbnb. Rates range between $250 to $500 per night based on the season. The Farmhouse 268 Bradford Street Barrie, (705)737-0522 thefarmhouse.ca

GOODLIFE DINING GUIDE RESTAURANTS - FOOD - ENTERTAINMENT GOODLIFE GROOVY TUESDAY’S BISTRO Comfortably Small • Locally Focussed • Open Kitchen • Casual Elegant Atmosphere Melanie Barrett is where she wants to be. “People tell me that I should expand and make my restaurant bigger,” says the owner of downtown Barrie’s Groovy Tuesdays Bistro, “but I like it small, that way I can see and interact with all of my diners. Getting a bigger space would change that, and make it less personal.” Our menu is small, fresh and always changing. To put our best plate forward. From our breads and pastas to our desserts, we make absolutely everything from scratch. Being consistent with the quality of our food is really important to us.
