I
t’s like eating at Grandma’s house … if your grandma were a gourmet chef. Everything at the Twisted Apron, from breakfast to dessert is prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. We’re your neighbourhood kitchen table, where everything is made in-house from our own recipes, even our condiments. Whether you order from any of our seasonal menu items, or indulge in our daily chef’s whim chalkboard specials, The Twisted Apron is a place where friends and family come and gather for exceptional, everyday food. Is there a story behind your name? What is it? Growing up, my grandmothers and my mom always had aprons on in the kitchen; it was used for everything from wiping my nose, to carrying things around. Seeing an apron brings back great memories of family meals and holiday gatherings. I was raised on simple food, cooked well. My vision for The Twisted Apron was based on my upbringing, classic dishes but made with a twist, a little minor change that takes a simple comfort food dish and kicks it up a notch.

Q& &A What’s your signature dish? Truffled grilled cheese, served with bacon jam or basil jam. What has changed most through the years since sitting at the dinner table With your family? We used to put pies on the window ledge to cool, now people put their pies out to defrost. (This does not happen in my house) I also think a lot of familes don’t eat together enough. ever had a grandmother/mom upset that your cooking is better than hers? “No, but I definitely get a few who want to come in the kitchen and teach my chef some of their secrets. We also have quite a few customers who have us cater their events in their dishes, so they can tell everyone they made it.” What inspired you to open a restaurant? I started in the industry when I was 18 and fell in love with it. By 20, I knew I would own my own. I opened this type of restaurant to give busy families, who may not always have time to create homecooked meals, a place to dine that offers them an atmosphere that is comfortable

What inspires you creatively in your menu selections? Hangovers, (they don’t happen often) but when they do, I need some really good comfort food. What is your idea of a great dessert? Anything with chocolate, more chocolate and maybe some chocolate ice cream.

rom craft cocktails to rotating selections of Ontario craft beer, West is Walkerville’s contemporary watering hole. Serving as the entry to the Twisted Apron Restaurant next door, West also has a great selection of house-made appetizers, sandwiches and salads with daily drink specials. At West, we’ve got your remedy to soothe away the ills of the day. “Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life.” - George Bernard Shaw
What Was your inspiration for opening a bar as the entry to your restaurant? My favourite thing to do is dine out, but prior to being seated at the table, I love to have an aperitif, The Twisted Apron does not have a large bar area, so I added a separate area to accommodate those that love a pre-meal cocktail. It makes a great waiting area to sit, relax and enjoy a beverage while waiting for guests or a table.
hoW many types of craft beer do you carry? On tap 14, and in our fridge another 10.
What is your specialty? Staying with the season, all of our menus change with the weather, including our cocktail list. We like keeping things fresh and local when possible. We also like to support the little guys.
if you Were stranded in a desert, What Would you order from West to quench your thirst? Definitely a pint, with a paloma being a close second.

55 Ouellette is a destination that holds something for everyone. It is considered the one-stop shop for great food, atmosphere and entertainment. With three uniquely different environments to enjoy, you will not leave unsatisfied. South Detroit: Open since August of 2013, South Detroit is a unique and different kind of restaurant. It is at once a convenient, cozy and inviting place, offering delicious menu choices without the clutter of fine dining or suffering the disappointing fair served in many pubs. But even more, South Detroit is uniquely styled – almost museum like – holding memories and reflections of times gone by while illuminating the eternal bond shared between the cities of Windsor and Detroit. South Detroit features appetizers, soups and salads, sandwiches, burgers, flatbreads and fresh/raw oysters every weekend. Everything is made for sharing so that you can enjoy all the menu has to offer. The menu also gives nods to institutions like Elias Deli, Coney Island and Mexican town which are all establishments that have made their mark in the Windsor/Detroit dining landscape.

es! It’s pasta! The Pasta House, a locally owned and family operated business, prides itself on the authenticity and quality of their products which comes only from using the finest fresh, whole ingredients. Established in 1988, there have been three generations of pasta perfection. Having a passion for pasta, they offer their customers an upscale, but affordable product, available both to the retail and wholesale sector. Located in the heart of little Italy “Via Italia,” Windsor, their fresh egg noodle pasta made on premises, is created naturally using Durum Semolina Flour (which contains most of the grain and eliminates the bleaching process), and fresh eggs, the way pasta was intended to be made. The shop offers fresh pasta cuts like fettuccine, lasagne sheets, a large variety of filled products such as ravioli, tortellini, gnocchi, and many sauces, hand-made prepared dinners in various sizes, soups from scratch, garlic bread and much much more. The shop also shelves imported vinegars, oils, spreads, olives, antipasto, fresh Italian and Canadian cheeses and much more, many imported from Italy. Made fresh daily, all day, on premises at their factory location and retail store, pasta is sold within hours of producing, using no preservatives, colour or additives, but relying on fresh ingredients and herbs for a great savoury flavour. Now that’s fresh. Only real natural ingredients, the old fashioned way from scratch. The label tells it all. Ingredients can be read and understood.

There are only a handful of pasta makers like The Pasta House, that still use the old-fashioned method of mixing dough with only raw ingredients and passing it through rollers before cutting the pasta into shape. This handmade method used in preparing The Pasta House’s natural pasta products has been used for hundreds of years, and still gives you a far better, more “AL DENTE” full flavoured pasta. Here at The Pasta House – Pasta is Born. The selection of different pastas available is large and can be versatile, whether it’s used for a traditional plate of pasta and sauce, or for soups, or salads, or stews … and much more. One example is the mini-ravioli made for soups, but many Mom’s buy this product to serve to their young ones because it is bite size…. and healthy. Along with their retail storefront, The Pasta House services upscale grocery stores and many restaurants including Windsor’s pride of Italian restaurants, some from the day they opened their doors. They also have a local food distributor offering the product to restaurants. The Pasta House, the house pasta built and where pasta is born, was built with three generations of Italians using recipes passed down from their families. They are unique and different in the sense that their cuisine is authentic Italian, typical Abruzzo Cuisine in southern Italy, known for their culinary mastery. Everything is made on premises daily and all from scratch with nothing ever added but real ingredients, and are always trying to support local businesses with their purchases. The Pasta House produces food that they feel comfortable serving to their own families. Taste the difference for yourself!

ettawas Station Italian Mediterranean Grill has been a neighbourhood staple for nearly seven years. Mettawas is dedicated to presenting a classic menu with innovative and interesting twists. Our extensive a la carte menu includes traditional Italian pasta and pizzas as well as appetizers, steaks and seafood. We are passionate about what our county has to offer seasonally and incorporate these wonderful flavours into our seasonal menus. Savour the flavours with friends and some local wine, a craft beer or a signature cocktail. Relax and enjoy our casual dining atmosphere either on our secluded patio or in our cozy dining room. Mettawas Station is located in the original Kingsville Train Depot. The building, originally built by Hiram Walker in 1889, is fully restored and yet it still maintains the old world charm! Who did the restoration of the building?
The building restoration was completed by the Essex Region Conservation Authority in 2003 with the aid of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and generous donations from some of the residents of Kingsville and surrounding areas.
What are your signature dishes?
Our signature dishes include the Rack of Lamb grilled to perfection, homemade Gnocchi, local Perch and Pickerel and of course the house favourite, Spaghetti and Meatballs!
Q& &A What is your inspiration?
Both of my grandmothers had a passion for cooking. They were my inspiration. Working in restaurants since I was 15 years old, it became a natural fit to become a chef and restaurant owner.
What is the one thing people need to try before leaving your establishment?
The cheesecake of the month is a musthave! Savoury to sweet, our cheesecake, made in-house, is different every month with creative combinations!
Why this location?
We picked this location because of its historical significance to the town of Kingsville. Hiram Walker brought a lot to this town with the Mettawas Hotel and the Kingsville Train Station. We want people to know the history of this beautiful building and the stories it holds.

S
p
How did you start your business?:
My husband and I discovered an Olive Oil Tasting Room in Palm Springs and sampled fresh “Olive juice” and I was “WOW this is what an Olive is supposed to taste like.” We were hooked. We loved the concept of getting educated and sampling different Olive Oils. They actually have a name like Coratina, Picual, Abrosana and each have their own character, texture and taste. We needed to bring this “fresh concept” to Windsor. People need to experience cooking with fresh unfiltered Olive Oil that is not refined. It is not just for salads anymore. l

L
ocated at 2090 Wyandotte St East in Windsor, Carrots n’ Dates is a cozy health café specializing in wholesome and 100% plant based food made with the freshest and finest ingredients. All of our food is sourced local and GMO free when possible. We believe that food is an essential source for health, energy, happiness and well-being. Established in December of 2012, Carrots n’ Dates began with an array of very simple vegan, gluten-free desserts and raw energy bars. With a seemingly overnight success, Neviana’s dream has evolved into a wide range of ready cooked meals, wholesome salads and raw desserts that are now available for sale at the café. At age 24, Neviana was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, a common condition in North America that causes inflammation to the digestive system. After learning that much of her symptoms were the result of a diet consisting of processed foods, Neviana decided to educate and challenge the norm of modern medicine and embark on a journey that would allow her to be symptom free for the better part of three years. Throughout this time, Neviana found a true passion for heath-conscience food and, most importantly, helping others realize that they too can heal themselves. 34

Neviana continued on this path to better nutrition by attending countless seminars on healthy eating and lifestyle changes while living in Calgary and Toronto. During this time, she discovered that the real medicine is in the food we eat and numerous ailments can be cured through a simple change in eating habits. After eight years of continued self-teaching, Neviana continues to apply her knowledge to her everyday life, which she now shares with her husband and two beautiful children. Wanting to take it a step further, Neviana decided to share her findings by partnering with a local fitness site and creating a blog on healthy eating. The blog has established a large following and the continuous interest in her story has snow-balled into the development of Carrots n’ Dates, a home-based food company that provides delectable nourishment for the soul.
S

l
Neviana’s passion for healthy eating continues to expand as she attends networking events and cooking classes and her extensive collection of books continue to inspire. Neviana also believes that much of her products are derived from listening to what her clients want, with the hope and belief that word will spread so others can experience the benefits that her family have been living for the last few years. How did THiessen’s Pick Your own APPles begin?
By 1969, Thiessen’s first harvest of the apple trees began. At this time, the market for apples was less than desirable so Andrew’s mother Gloria decided to sell a few bags of apples at the road. She placed a little wagon with apples at the roadside, and a year later, Pick Your Own Apples at Thiessen Orchards was open. The first year was very slow, but has since grown to an apple picking season of 7 days a week, 8 weeks a year, with numerous other activities available for people of all ages.

A Touch of clAss Cutting-Edge designs, diverse collections, and remarkable value characterize Palazzi’s Rug collections. From old world patterns in rich, antique colours to new treasures featuring the latest styling trends, a selection from Palazzi Oriental Rugs can beautifully, easily, and instantly transform any room. Let a Rug from Palazzi add a “Touch of Class” to your home. DiD You Know? Design works best when you start from the ground up. It is much easier to choose furniture and fabric once a rug is determined, and because the rug is one of the major purchases in decorating, it logically should come first. Rugs, more than any other standard furnishing are an extension of the personality of the home and the homeowner. The choice of rugs for your fifth wall is as personal and as subjective as choosing art for your four other walls. Just as one lets a decor decide how a picture fits into a room, it is the entire room itself that must decide on the suitability of the rug.

While BetterMade Cabinets is known throughout the region for its kitchen design and installation projects, the company is very much a full-service cabinetry outfit. “We take it a lot further than just kitchens,” Vern emphasizes. “We do a fair bit of complete renovations, plus entertainment centres, wall units, hutches, buffets, interior trim, interior doors, and ceiling work and details.” To transfer creativity into material reality, BetterMade’s expansive manufacturing facility is staffed by highly skilled, expertly

WHAT ASPECT OF THE BUSINESS ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Q& &A FAVOURITE QUOTE?
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”- William Morris
We have several good friends who suffer from chemical allergies. This has informed us of just how toxic many of the things we use and buy are. We were thrilled, therefore, to introduce the only third party certified organic mattress in the area. Built in the Ottawa region, it is one of the purest sleep systems available. I love how one poet expressed that “sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” A good sleep is crucial to our energy, attitude and overall well-being. We have had numerous testimonials, including chiropractors, naturopathic doctors and those with chronic health problems, as to the effectiveness of this mattress. That is why I have one myself and why I am passionate about this product.
WHAT PHILOSOPHY GUIDES YOUR BUSINESS?
Your home needs to be a sanctuary, a refuge where you find relief from the pressures and anxieties of life. It should be inviting and appealing, an oasis that refreshes and delights you. Our goal is to help our clients achieve that.

rom the outset of her career, Phyllis Chant was recognized as one of the most talented fine art photographers in the Windsor-Essex County region, producing imaginative artwork that soon adorned galleries, offices and private homes. Her remarkable eye, honed with a Visual Arts degree from the University of Windsor (and having had a camera in her hands for several decades), captured all of the elements of fine art: composition, lighting, colour, perspective, subject matter and emotion. She brings her mastery of all of those qualities to bear, also, to her commercial undertakings: portraiture and modelling; engagements, weddings and anniversaries; newborns and children; pets; journalism and special event freelancing; and retail and industrial assignments including, for instance, her service as the chief photographer of the “Splurge” book that you currently hold in your hands.
Phyllis Chant Photography C apture the moment 323 Briar Ridge Ave • Amherstburg, Ontario (519) 736-6561 • www.phyllischant.com
In all areas of endeavour, Phyllis’ chief concern is service to the customer. Her weddingshoot pre-planning, for instance, is extensive. “Developing a close relationship with the bride and groom, scouting shoot locations, and creating a wedding checklist of desired photos is the key to making sure that this aspect of their most important day is stressfree,” she emphasizes. Her greatest joy is developing such a relationship with clients that she becomes their “family photographer.” “Despite having been in business, formally, for only half-adecade, I already have a number of clients whose lives I have chronicled on an annual basis: from the engagement, to the shower, to the wedding, to the birth of their first child ... sometimes with the anniversary of a set of parents thrown in too.” Phyllis’ work can be viewed on her website and on Facebook (Chant Photo and/or Phyllis Chant Photography). Her studio is located in Amherstburg, but she is happy to arrange for off-site shoots.

Q& &A What’s your main service/ specialty?:
Brad specializes in selling residential, waterfront and commercial properties while offering a hands-on approach and personal accountability to his client. Brad services the entire Windsor Essex County.
Describe your sales philosophy?
“To simply work hard, greet everyone with a smile and let nothing distract me from what’s most important for my business – getting out and talking with people one on one. A person’s values are the No. 1 priority for me, the sales come after that.”
S

rad Bondy epitomizes integrity, energy, hard work, and creative service in every detail of your real estate transaction. Brad was born and raised in the Essex County area, raised on a farm with his three sisters and two brothers. Brad started his work ethic at an early age, getting up early each morning to harvest the crops with his father. He has still continued rising early and has built a successful career in real estate for over nine years in the Windsor Essex area. Brad is the top Realtor in all of Windsor Essex County and the #1 Sales Representative at Re/Max Preferred Realty Ltd. for the last six years. He has worked in every aspect of the industry representing sellers, buyers, investors, and banks, in both the residential and commercial market. “I get my work ethic from my parents,” explains Brad. Customer service is huge. It’s what my parents and grandparents instilled in me. It’s about honesty, openness and someone who looks at you in the eye.” Brad is a family man devoted to his beautiful wife Luisa and his two daughters, Jessica and Sarah, who support him fully. “Without my family,” Brad emphasizes, “there’s no way that I could do what I’m doing, because of the time it would take me away from them.” Brad is very much involved with the community, he coaches baseball for the local high school and also lends his larger-than-life personality to the Miracle League – it’s a North American baseball organization for persons with special needs for which he’s a play-by-play commentator and a major sponsor. “We take so much for granted every day. It’s an honour to be a small part of those wonderful players.” To maximize his time with current and prospective clients, Brad relies on Diane Schultz and Brian Bondy, both licensed sales representatives and also his assistant/ photographer Heather Harber. Brad prides himself on his hands-on approach and personal accountability with clients- so he’s found ways to keep the “I” in team while expanding his business. He and his team work with all his clients to initiate communication in every detail of the transaction, from the first phone call all the way to the close. He leads, trains and motivates his team to communicate with you better. Five words you can count on from Brad are trust, integrity, commitment, passion and fun.

TELL US ABOUT wHAT HAS BROUGHT YOU wHERE YOU ARE TODAY:
Sixteen years ago, I was an educator at St. Clair College in the dental hygiene department, when I decided I needed a change. With the support of my friends and family, I embarked on a real estate career. I have never looked back. My degree in adult education has helped me guide my clients through the real estate process. It is my pleasure to help my clients and I am very grateful for the relationships I have built throughout the years.

I’m also working with the Essex County Conservation Committee to maintain, improve and expand parks, waterfront and marshlands in our region.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
In 2014, I was the top individual agent at RE/ MAX in terms of total transactions based on WECAR stats. I have also been awarded the RE/MAX Lifetime Achievement Award that recognizes both longevity and production. Only three other RE/MAX professionals have received this accolade in this region. I am a member of the RE/MAX Hall of Fame, and yearly with the help of my loyal clients, friends and family, I am able to achieve Chairman’s Club and Platinum Awards (yearly sales awards).
l
elping local families, as well as new residents, move to this area to find their dream home in Windsor-Essex County is what I enjoy. The housing we have available is attractive. We have a lot of townhouses and duplex-style homes on smaller sized lots which makes things very easy for home buyers looking for a lower-maintenance lifestyle. Moreover, the BIA in Kingsville has done a great job working with the restaurants and wineries that we have here. And, of course, we also have the marina and golf course.
u

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT wOULD SURPRISE US:
Many people would know that I am an avid scuba diver and love to travel but not many people would know how much I love Lake Erie and all it has to offer with world class fishing, boating and recreational sports.
wHAT DOES YOUR FUTURE HOLD?:
I look forward to building new relationships and helping past clients. I love to promote Windsor-Essex County and all that it has to offer. I live in a very special area, not only the landscape, waterfront and proximity to the United States but it’s the people. People here are incredibly warm, welcoming and friendly. g

PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO KNOW That I have been doing this for 26 years! DESCRIBE YOUR SHOPS VIBE Professional and Caring. Customers really feel we are here for them, we hear them tell others in the store not to worry and that they’re in good hands. We get hugs, we get tears, it can be a very emotional visit for a lot of ladies. Our store is set up like a big bedroom. Lace pillows and trim all around, old furniture and wood, like the comfort of your Grandmother’s room.
Q& &A BRANDS/PRODUCTS YOU CARRY?: Over 5,000 Bras in stock mostly imported from the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, examples: Chantelle, Fantasie, Prima Donna, Panache, Anita, Felina, Goddess. Sports bras, strapless, nursing, enhancing, minimizing to name a few. Mastectomy Needs: Bra Prostheses, Bathing Suits, Camisoles. Sleepwear and Loungewear, bathing suits, slippers and much more. HOW DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?: In 1989, I had just got married and I worked 3-11 at Grace Hospital as a nurse’s aide in Labour & Delivery. Two of my nursing friends and I thought we’d start making slips and camisoles for under our uniforms

and sell them to our coworkers. We did our homework, got our supplies together and rented a little storefront downtown on Park, at the corner of Pelissier. One thing led to another and before we knew it we had a few racks with beautiful sleepwear on it and we started to grow from there. I was content just to offer gowns and pyjamas, and I didn’t think bras were necessary at all. I lost that argument, thankfully, and we started to bring in some bras. If I won that argument, I don’t think I’d be here, 26 years later! Bras have become our specialty and we’ve grown to be quite fussy at what we do.

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS PHILISOPHY? To make every woman feel good about herself. It doesn’t matter if it’s her very first bra, for maternity, a wedding, or a mastectomy bra. Every woman deserves to feel special and be treated as so. WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS I believe my honesty and respect for others. I will not treat anyone like I wouldn’t want to be treated and that has helped me make a lot of hard decisions along the way. AND I love what I’m doing. WHO IS YOUR TARGET CLIENTELE? Women! 100%. It’s a compliment to me to see the gentlemen coming in, but my focus when I do all my buying is for the girls. The whole environment is purely feminine and I admire those men who come in to pamper their ladies in their lives.

hey believed they could, so they did. After years of dreams and planning, our reality became C Shells when we opened in July 2014 at 4729 Wyandotte St. E, in the heart of Pillette Village in Windsor.
C Shells
We decided on the name C Shells as we wanted customers to think of our store when decorating their home, vacation home, sunroom or beach porch, then played with ideas to incorporate ourselves into the store name and image. ‘Shells’ is for Shelley, the store artist, and the ‘C’ is for Chantelle and Crystin, two of her daughters. The name is also a play on ‘come and see’ Shells shop. [There may have been a glass of wine involved].

We have an eccentric mix of hand-painted furniture, reinvented home décor and unique gifts. We make our own candles, soaps, sock monsters and give new life to neglected and forgotten treasures. oyful and important life moments are made even more memorable when accompanied with a gift of jewellery. Recognizing the significance of each occasion, the thoughtful giver will come to depend on their jeweller to complement that occasion with a precious gift!
“I think of the generations of families who have let us be a part of their life moments,” says President Wayne Wharram, who owns the ‘Uptown’ Leamington jewellery store with his wife and store manager, Evelin. “They continue to choose Wharram’s Jewellery, not just because of our expertise or our personalized, professional customer service, but because history means something to them and they rely on the integrity of their jeweller.” Wharram’s Jewellery is presently located in a stately heritage building constructed in 1906 by the Union Bank of Canada. Wayne purchased the building from the Royal Bank of Canada in 1980. The secure historic ‘gem’, with turn of the century architecture, symbolizes the quality of the jewellery and service within. Numerous awards have been presented to Wharram’s Jewellery recognizing both the distinguished structure and their professionalism. Wayne offers what he would call a “full service jewellery store” with eight staff members, including gemologists, graduate jewellers, goldsmiths, engravers and sales associates, to care for his customers.

How did you get started?
Reflecting on the journey of his family’s business, Wayne recalls the skilled precision of his father and certified watchmaker, J. Russel Wharram, as he worked over his bench at home for five years. Then in 1955, Russel and his wife Gladys opened a retail jewellery store in Uptown Leamington. Wayne’s career began in 1975 after graduating from the University of Windsor. He went on to earn Graduate Gemologist and Graduate Jeweller diplomas from the Gemological Institute of America.

AND THE WINES: Paglione Estate wines pay homage to the Italian winemaking traditions of the old country, enhanced by the unique terroir of Canada’s southernmost region. The wines are produced with estate grown or locally grown grapes in small batches, and are fermented with indigenous yeast, using natural, old-world Italian methods. They are unfined and minimally filtered, resulting in a fresher taste with more purity of fruit. The natural sediment nourishes the wine over time enabling it to age gracefully in the cellar. With minimal intervention, nature is left to take its course, yielding a more harmonious finish that better reflects the terroir and the classic Italian approach to winemaking. l

alkerville Brewery is a well-appointed microbrewery located in the City of Windsor in a district known by locals as Walkerville. Situated within the area originally developed by Hiram Walker over 150 years ago, we are proud to complement our neighbours, the C.C. Brand Centre and Pernod Ricard, to form this modern day distillery district. The craft brewery occupies an 18,000-square-foot building once known as “Surge Plant 16” and is located only blocks away from the original Walkerville Brewing Company established in 1890.
By handcrafting unique styles in small batches using quality malted barley, hops and pure water, we deliver fresh flavourful beers to our customers. Offering a range of flagship beers, seasonal offerings and special edition one-off beer styles, there are always unique and interesting beers flowing from the tanks and taps of Walkerville Brewery. The brewery itself not only houses our brew house and fermenters, but also contains a retail shoppe, beer store, tap room and event space that is open seven days a week. Join us for a tour, special event or for a glass of the freshest beer in town! 158
