GReeTINGS FROM MAyOR AND COuNCIL
It’s my distinct honour to present you with the 2018 Spring/ Summer Parks, Facilities and Recreation Guide. Twice a year the town produces this important publication, which is chock full of valuable information for residents and visitors. On these pages you will find a variety of details about recreation programs geared towards children, youth, adults, and seniors. The town takes great effort to provide recreational opportunities for all who live in our community. I encourage you to sit down with your loved ones and explore the array of programs that are available. I believe you will find several fun opportunities that will help keep you fit and mentally engaged. Perhaps this will be the year you try something new. We are fortunate to have the facilities we do, such as the RecPlex and the Wasaga Sports Park, and the talented individuals who spearhead much of the programing. Many of our recreational events are possible due to volunteers and I want to take a moment to recognize these valued individuals. Simply put, if it weren’t for the volunteers in our community we would not be the great place we are today. So, on behalf of all council and staff, I thank you for your efforts. Also in this publication, you will find information about special events. Wasaga Beach hosts some terrific events every summer, many at or near our world class beachfront. I always enjoy seeing our residents at these activities and once again I look forward to chatting with friends, neighbours, and visitors. I also want to highlight the phenomenal trail network that exists in our town. If you’ve never taken the time to explore this system you really should. Walking on our trails, or cycling on them, is an excellent way to enjoy our outdoors. Trails that meander through Wasaga Beach Provincial Park are particularly special. You will see some beautiful parts of the community that simply aren’t accessible from the main roads. Of course, you don’t have to go off-road to enjoy Wasaga Beach. The town continues to invest in new sidewalks, making our community even more walkable. The River Road West reconstruction project is one such project that will result in additional sidewalks, as well as bike lanes. The project will be complete later this year. Paddling on the Nottawasaga River is another great way to see our town. If you’ve never had the chance to see Wasaga Beach from the river, I hope you make this the year. The shoreline is absolutely stunning as you glide along the majestic “Notty”, as many locals call the river. Council and staff continue to work on building a new downtown, including the creation of a community hub, a space that will permit additional recreation and cultural opportunities in our great town. The downtown project is certainly a cause for excitement. Not only will the investment benefit our community in the short-term, but it will pay dividends in the long-run. Additional programing space, special events venues, condominium-style housing, and an increased tax base are just some of the benefits we can count on. This is an awesome time to live in our community and, as this guide highlights, there are some fantastic ways to enjoy our time here. As always, it’s my honour and privilege to serve as your mayor. Remember, I appreciate your feedback at all times. You can reach me at 705-429-3844, ext. 2225, or by e-mail at mayor@ wasagabeach.com. Sincerely, Brian Smith, Mayor

Nancy Island historic Site This year Nancy Island Historic Site celebrates it’s 90th Anniversary! The site represents a major event during the War of 1812: the HMS Nancy’s battle against three American Schooners on August 14th of 1814. The island houses the charred hull and artefacts of the HMS Nancy from this pivotal moment in Canadian history. The borders of Canada today are a direct result of the valiant struggles of the Nancy and her crew.

The SIMCOe MuSkOkA DISTRICT heALTh uNIT The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit launched a second phase of the “No money for food is ... Cent$less” campaign on Monday October 30th. Aside from continuing with awareness raising about food insecurity, how serious and pervasive a problem it is and the need for income-based policy solutions, SMDHU has created new tools and resources, including a downloadable package available on our website to encourange people to take action and advocate – not just donate – during the holiday food drive season and throughout the year. This phase of the campaign was developed in partnership with and is supported by many food banks across our area as well as a small advisory group of people with lived experience. New tools and resources include a handout that provides ideas for healthy items to donate to food banks. There is also a postcard as well as a poster that both highlight the need for action to increase incomes.
