istro 42, an exciting new restaurant, is now open in the heart of Essex wine country. Executive Chef Steve Meehan (pictured left) has crafted a menu rooted in French bistro traditions melded with culinary influences from cultures around the world. The building is just as unique as the menu. Owners Martin Gorski and Suzanne Dajczak drew inspiration from their travels throughout the world, and based the design on the architecture of New Zealand. Designed around the premise of ‘bringing the outdoors in,’ the building features wood, stone, and glass, and boasts a large porch overlooks the vineyards, plus decks front and back with views of the vineyard, lake, and lavender fields. Bistro 42 is open daily for lunch and dinner throughout the year. In addition to a full range of North 42° Estate Winery’s award-winning wines, cocktails and local beers are available. The menu changes seasonally and features fresh produce from the twoacre garden planted for the kitchen. Ingredients not grown on sight will be

locally sourced where ever possible. In addition to seasonal selections featuring fresh ingredients, North 42° Estate Winery’s Sommelier, Leslie Meloche, carefully pairs each menu item with suggested wines. Bistro 42 provides another opportunity for guests to relax and enjoy the hospitality of North 42° Estate Winery—Purveyors of Good Times and Fine Wines.

Q&A

Who inspired you? My parents and my sister Deb ultimately ignited my love for the business. Growing up in our family restaurant (Country Boy Tavern, St. Joachim), my siblings and I were expected to work in the business. Never would I have ever imagined that this industry would become my passion! Three Generations Working with family is not always the easiest thing. My mother had always taught me to pay attention to every little detail, whether it was as small as how to properly clean a table or how to achieve ultimate customer satisfaction. Her famous line that I heard throughout my entire life was “the customer is always right”. This quote has become the saying that I now live by and the message I have passed down to my daughter who is now following in my footsteps. Although she continues to work in the family business, I am happy that she is also pursuing a university degree. We will just have to wait and see where her true passion lies.

What’s the secret to your success? I would never be able to run the restaurant on my own, my husband plays a huge role in the success of our business. He is the captain of the ship in the kitchen, although he could not do it without our amazing team. Each and every staff member brings something valuable to the table. We are always thankful for the endless dedication and hard work from our employee’s. “I am passionate about my business and that shows in everything I do!!” Proprietors David and Patty Bosco

Our Extra Virgin Olive Oil is third party lab tested, so we give you the chemistry, sensory evaluation, crush date and country of origin. 3) What makes dressed by an Olive different from brand name olive oils? Oleocanthal is a natural component that acts as an anti-inflammatory to help reduce inflammation. 5) Why did you open an Olive Oil Tasting Room? To talk the truth about olive oil and give the consumer a unique and personal shopping experience. We love educating our customers because we feel good about giving you the best. We feel olive oil should be a staple ingredient in your kitchen. The health benefits are proven and it tastes great.

Q&A

With SuzAnnE dAjCzAk

erenity Lavender Farm truly lives up to its name. Enchantingly serene, the farm is only 30 minutes from the bustle of the city but feels as if it is a world away. The Farm boasts two lavender fields and a garden featuring a Lavender Labyrinth. The Serenity Lavender Farm Store has a wide range of lavender products in addition to gifts, jewelry, and dĂŠcor. Lavender is one of the most nostalgic and romantic of fragrances, use of Lavender reaches back to the beginnings of recorded history. Its popularity skyrocketed when Queen Victoria, enamored with this versatile aromatic herb, appointed a “Purveyor of Lavender Essence to the Queen.â€? Lavender became the fragrance of choice among

English ladies, and was also prized for its wide range of uses. A visit to the Serenity Lavender Farm store illustrates many of those uses through the selection of handcrafted products that include essential oils, bath and body, a variety of culinary herbs and seasonings, and teas blended with lavender. Handcrafted products from local and regional artisans, and a range of classes ensure there is something for everyone. Owners Suzanne Dajczak and Martin Gorski have teamed up with other local businesses to develop unique products, and a strong commitment to lavender research which led to a partnership with the University of Guelph. Serenity Lavender Farm is truly a Scensational Experience.

What inspired you to open Serenity Lavender Farm? Serenity Lavender Farm was inspired by our travels, a single lavender plant, and a love of farming and gardening. Martin and I soon recognized that lavender would make an excellent complement to North 42 Degrees Estate Winery.

You make your own lavender products? We do! Our hand harvested lavender is dried for use our culinary and aromatherapy products. Fresh lavender is distilled into essential oil and floral water that is used in our bath and body products.

What are some of the uses for lavender? Lavender is much more than just a pretty plant. It is a powerful herbal remedy that offers both physical and emotional relief for issues as varied as burns, migraines, insomnia, insect bites, stress and anxiety, aching muscles, cuts, and acne. Can lavender be used in cooking? Yes, lavender is very popular in cooking and can be found as an ingredient in restaurants around the world. Lavender lends a floral, slightly sweet flavor to most dishes. Dried buds or fresh flowers are used, and the leaves can be used as a substitute for rosemary.

S

p

r

Are you open year round? We are open seven days a week year round. The fields bloom in June and are at their peak of colour for our annual Lavender Festival the last weekend in June. Plants are available to buy starting each spring. Where can we get more information? Visit serenitylavender.com for news, tips for growing lavender, uses our products, and recipes. Follow Serenity Lavender Farm on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest information on the store, the fields, and upcoming events and classes.

Q&A What is Ten Thousand Villages? Ten Thousand Villages is an organization which sells handicrafts from ‘developing’ countries through its network of stores in Canada and the USA. The inspiration for our name came from a Mahatma Gandhi quote “… India is not to be found in its few cities but in the 700,000 villages…” To us each village in the world represents a unique and distinctive people, offering extraordinary products born of their rich cultures and traditions. How are we different from mainstream importers? People first, product second! We deliberately go looking for people who have no marketing connections. In some cases, we buy from artisan who have never made anything they could sell before. We first encourage artisans to make whatever they can from raw materials they have locally available. As we work together, they are able to increase their sophistication. Sometimes, we are able to provide

HOPPING THE WORLD RIGHT HERE AT HOME! ‘A product is not just a thing for sale, it is art with a human touch deep inside.’ This quote is from one of the artisans with whom Ten Thousand Villages has established a fair and respectful working relationship. People are truly at the heart of what we do. Our desire is to help give artisans the hope, dignity, joy and respect that comes from earning a decent living. Ten Thousand Villages’ extensive Fair Trade product line features handcrafted jewelry and personal accessories, natural home décor, and food and skin care products that celebrate both cultural traditions and environmental responsibility. Ten Thousand Villages works together with artisans in healthy business relationships. We purchase products from more than 20,000 individual artisans, represented by 72 groups in 27 countries around the world, giving them fair value for their work. We encourage North American consumers to learn about Fair Trade and to appreciate artisans’ cultural heritage and life circumstances with joy and respect. We use resources carefully and value the volunteers who work in our North American operations.

artisan groups with enough marketing and product design assistance that they are able to attend trade shows and develop other trading relationships. How is a ‘fair wage’ determined? Ten Thousand Villages buyers talk directly with artisan groups. They also talk with other organizations working in the country to learn how much other people in the community earn – farm workers, construction workers, teachers etc. It is Ten Thousand Villages goal to ensure that an artisan’s basic needs for food, clothing, housing, medical care and children’s education are met.

After settling into her new residence, she was approached by the Young family, long time owners of Leamington Home Hardware, and soon Finders to Keepers was resurrected under their roof. Michele continues to be buyer and decorator, seeking unique items for the popular giftware section of the store. A wonderful selection of ladies jewelry, purses and scarves; interesting home and garden decor, and of course, treasures from the past including previously loved furniture transformed with the ASPIRE all natural line of clay/chalk/mineral paint and finishing products. The entire line of Aspire is available for purchase in store creative “do-it-yourselfers!” If you plan to make a trip and hope to see Michele in store, keep in mind that her hours are part time and vary – contact her in advance and she will meet you there whenever possible to say hello, assist with your decorating needs or share tips and tricks on using the Aspire paint products.

I

have always been one to enjoy home decor and paying close attention to detail. Being different and creating things that are one of a kind has always been something I take pride in. Every birthday and holiday, giving gifts always seemed better than receiving to me. Right from the start I enjoyed planning out thoughtful gifts for my friends and family. Everything from gift wrapping to the card inside. My family and I would always go out for ice cream in the summer. When I was younger. It was one of my favourite things to do. Making simple yet fun memories that have stuck with me throughout the years. It has always been something that reminded me of how important it was to make time for my family. I decided to take these parts of my life and combine them into a place that is not only a fun family of friendly environment but also nostalgic, the perfect place for families and friends to make memories.

Priscilla’s Presents and Here’s the Scoop Ice Cream Parlour

Priscilla’s became a reality for me in May 2017. Named after my fun loving niece who was incredibly creative and was always inspired by retro themed things. I wanted to represent her legacy in the best way I knew how, therefore creating Priscilla’s is one of the things I have accomplished that I am most proud of.

hy hand-crafted soap?

Our handmade soaps were born 20 years ago out of the need to keep our family healthy. We source our natural, organic ingredients from around the globe and each bar is hand-crafted using custom blended formulas to enhance the unique properties of these premium ingredients. Wherever possible, we support farmers who are dedicated to the principles of sustainable agriculture through fair trade. We pride ourselves on creating soaps that are moisturizing and promote healthy, clean skin. Our soaps are packed full of high quality oils, butters and botanicals with excellent lathering power for a wonderful skin care experience. The soap you buy at the grocery store isn’t really soap at all. It’s detergent! And it’s full of chemicals and sulfates. Conversely, natural soaps contain fats and oils. Our unique process retains high concentrations of these vital ingredients for youthful, moisturized, healthy skin. Our soaps are: • Chemical-free • Synthetic-free • Naturally scented • Moisturizing

Even though our soaps are now commercially available, each batch is still handmade using organic, all natural, and exotic ingredients, to produce only the highest quality soap. While the bar sizes may be uneven, and the edges a bit rough, it is through these small imperfections that you can be assured of our homemade quality. Our goal is to put our customers needs rst. If you have any questions or comments about our soaps we’d love to hear from you - visit our website or connect through social media.

ay-View Glass & Mirror has constantly evolved with exciting trends while sticking to our core principals of quality and customer service,” says Eric LaMarre, who grew up in his family’s glass business in Windsor. “Over the years we’ve seen many trends come and go but we believe that our line of custom back-painted glass is on the cutting edge of modern home design. With the right colour application, it will warm up any traditional home as well.” Now you can have the polish, clarity and protection of a glass surface with your desired colour – any shade imaginable – showing through. To achieve the effect, Bay-View applies a specially designed formula that bonds securely and directly to the back of the glass. The colour can be given added depth with an opaque, translucent, metallic or pearl finish. Available at Bay-View, custom designed railings for any application. We have a design idea for almost every application. The railing featured here is a combination of our taperloc rail and custom mini posts for that completely frameless look down the stairs the perfect blend of glass and stainless steel. Our glass handrails have become the perfect addition to the new loft apartment you are designing or even the remodel you are planning. The look of a glass railing will open up any space and create an open appearance to even the smallest of stairways.

t is often said that how we are defined can be summed up in a few words. When your “humble beginnings” date back to 1943, the term uniquely defines you... and you define the term! After three generations, the Martindale family continues to embrace the cornerstone business practices of humility and appreciation as the premise of each customer experience. Martindale Window & Door offers the areas most diverse line of window and door products! Scott Martindale cannot hide his sense of pride while describing the scope of the company he now leads. “Our product line ranges from steel to fiberglass doors up to ten feet in height with countless options for decorative glass and designs to the unparalleled window options including the Martindale, Arctic brand, to wood, aluminum clad windows from top brands such as Loewen and Windsor Windows.” A visit to our state of the art manufacturing facility and showroom will help illustrate the great product options on display. Time and again this has proven the best way for our customers to make well informed, educated decisions for their investment. Products quality, diversity and innovation has created an appeal to a wide customer base. Our region’s most discerning home builders, architects, home and interior designers and renovators entrust their clients to Martindale Window & Door because we meet their customer care standards. On this point Scott Martindale thoughtfully pauses and states “It’s the honour of this challenge we gladly meet head on and see it as the next opportunity to let our history help shape the story each customer is creating for their family.”

Q&a Tell us about your business: We are a hearing health care office and have been providing exceptional hearing services to children ages 5 through adult. We have two locations: one in the heart of Tecumseh, and a second in Belle River. What would you recommend to your prospective patients? We would let prospective patients know that hearing is one of our most valuable senses and that it is important to protect it and monitor its acuity regularly, just as we would with our eye and dental care. What is the secret to your success? We hope it’s not a secret....but we truly care for every one of our patients and want everyone to feel that they are a part of our Sound Hearing Care family. We really do listen to every patient! There is an old adage that says: we are given two ears so that we can listen twice as much as we speak, and we firmly believe this.

ur mission at Sound Hearing Care is to provide the best and most comprehensive hearing care possible in a relaxed yet professional environment. We constantly strive to make everyone who comes through our doors feel heard - and then educate and treat each patient’s loss with their lifestyle and needs in mind. While not all hearing loss is preventable, there are a multitude of things that can treat the issue, no matter how mild or severe. From communication strategies, to amplification and other assistive listening devices...we will help navigate the technology available to not only treat your hearing loss, but ultimately improve your quality of life through better communication. Give us a call to schedule your hearing test today!

What is your biggest challenge? Changing misconceptions about hearing loss and hearing aids. Striving for reducing the stigma that hearing loss is ‘just for old people’, when in fact it can and does occur at all age levels. Also, changing the notion that hearing aids are bulky or too expensive to afford. There are many new styles and technology levels to suit every kind of need and budget.

alkerville Brewery is a well-appointed microbrewery located in the City of Windsor in a district known by locals as Walkerville. Situated within the area originally developed by Hiram Walker over 150 years ago, we are proud to complement our neighbours, the C.C. Brand Centre and J.P. Wiser’s to form this modern day distillery district. The craft brewery occupies an 18,000 square foot building once known as “Surge Plant 16” and is located only blocks away from the original Walkerville Brewing Company established in 1890. By handcrafting unique styles in small batches using quality malted barley, hops and pure water, we deliver fresh flavourful beers to our customers. Offering a range of flagship beers, seasonal offerings and special edition one-off beer styles; there are always unique and interesting beers flowing from the tanks and taps of Walkerville Brewery. The brewery itself not only houses our brew house and fermenters, but also contains a retail shoppe, beer store, tap room and event space that is open 7 days a week. Join us for a tour, special event or for a glass of the freshest beer in town!

aking It Happen’’ is realtor Barb Manery’s slogan. She backs that up with her promise to “always put her clients first.” As a consistent RE/MAX Top Producer in each of the past 14 years, Barb achieved the Remax prestigious Hall of Fame just four years after joining RE/MAX Preferred Realty Ltd. She believes her work experience provide the resources she needs to best serve home sellers and homebuyers. “I chose RE/MAX because it is a full service firm with strong experience and expertise.” Barb says. “My clients work with me because that is what I offer, as well. They also express their appreciation of my ability to fulfill their dreams when buying and selling their homes.” These assets, aligned with Barb’s strong base of loyal repeat clients, are the reasons behind her enduring success in an incredibly competitive sales environment. With the real estate market in Windsor-Essex County in full swing, a new agent, Chris Bishop, recently teamed up with Barb to help her

with the healthy demand for homes of all sizes. Chris and Barb are both Kingsville residents and know their neighbours well. To show her affection for her town, Barb has helped host the Kingsville BIA’s fashion shows; participated in the parades; and sponsored local hockey, soccer and baseball teams, the Kingsville District High School swim team and synchronized skating - healthy activities that her grandchildren and other youth play.

ack in 2014, I had an ah-ha moment, and not to say that my concept was anything new, but rather I literally walked out of a job interview thinking, “What am I doing here? Why can’t I run my own business and incorporate what I love to do and take my 20 years of professional experience being a highly successful Executive Assistant and work for myself and create my own A Team? Lawyers do it, Accountants do it, so why couldn’t I do it? The next day, I did it! I turned down the job and started to do some research and I haven’t turned back. The concept of outsourcing work to a freelancer is nothing new but the first thing most people think of when they hear the term “Virtual Assistant” is outsourcing to someone overseas. My vision is to keep the business local and create ongoing meaningful connections with my clients. I am offering business owners/executives, entrepreneurs, hiring mangers and anyone who needs administrative help, a new way to hire someone locally and keep costs reasonable. Why do we need to send it offshore when we have talent right here in our own backyard? Today’s modern Virtual Executive Assistant is super efficient and can work from anywhere. Clients can have the confidence that we can represent them professionally in their own community and business circle. The biggest fear people have when hiring someone is: Is the person reputable, trustworthy and skilled? Would I hire someone overseas and trust them with my business affairs? No. Knowing a client can physically meet me if need be, and knowing who is being hired and who is handling their most personal/business affairs, is the number one reason why I started this Virtual Executive Assistant company.

Q&A

www.iGoVirtualAssistant.com Windsor, ontArio 519-800-9925 or toll free 1 877-225-9973 WWW.iGoVirtuAlAssistAnt.com What is a Virtual Assistant? Simply put, a VA is someone who works for you remotely. If you need help, either in the operations of business, or just in your busy personal life, a virtual assistant can be a saving grace. Nearly anything that doesn’t require a physical presence, a VA can do and thanks to technology and living in a digital era, we no longer need to work from a desk right outside your office. Why Hire a Virtual Assistant? It’s cost effective and it’s the way of the future. A virtual assistant can help you regain control of your life. When we think of having an assistant, what comes to mind first is only the high-powered CEOs and people who are wealthy can afford them, but that’s not true. Thanks to state of the art technology, hiring a virtual assistant is simple and practical and affordable. It could be their ticket to growing profits and personal freedom.

98

S

p

l

u

r

What are the benefits of hiring a VA? Save time: The reason most people reach out to me is because they are simply too busy. By offloading their routine timeconsuming tasks to me, I literally add hours to their day. Time is our most valuable resource, and the one thing we end up wasting the most. Save money: You don’t have to worry about things like payroll processing, employment taxes, providing equipment and office space. It is considered a business expense that clients can write off. This alone can improve the ROI. Save headaches: For many customers, a virtual assistant is peace of mind. You have someone on call to help deal with whatever life throws at you. What is the secret to your success? Passion for this profession and loving technology. The ultimate success is when you see your client prosper and know that you helped them focus on what they do best, by solving their pain points.

akeside animal hospital: past, present, and Future “Kind and gentle care, with the latest in modern medicine” – this motto drives the day-to-day at Lakeside Animal Hospital, and dictates how Dr. Martin runs her busy small animal clinic in Kingsville, Ontario. Dr. Christina Martin moved to the Windsor-Essex area in 2011, after graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree and a Masters Degree in Clinical Studies. Initially, she worked for a larger corporation – dividing her time between Wheatley, Leamington and Kingsville practices. She fell in love with the Kingsville community, and decided to take ownership of the Lakeside Animal Hospital in September of 2014. Since then, many changes and upgrades have been made to the clinic and style of practice. With great emphasis on patient comfort, Dr. Martin now provides additional services from the recently added compassion room to the Accredited Mobile Facility. Every patient at Lakeside gets customized, individual attention. Dr. Martin’s insistence on only scheduling 1 to 2 surgical procedures per day means that her staff can focus on patient comfort in more detail. Modern pain management protocols, as well as additional touches such as a heated surgical table, warm recovery cages and post-operative massage are used to decrease stress and improve recovery and healing. Additionally, the Lakeside staff are now Low-Stress Certified. Dr. Martin is happy to celebrate 6 years in the Kingsville area, and 3 years of ownership at Lakeside this September. She is excited to continue to progress – she anticipates that veterinary medicine will have increased integration with board certified specialists in the future. In preparation, Lakeside has become fully digitized with: digital radiology, digital medical records and online access for owners to their upcoming appointments and medical information such as vaccine status. These upgrades make a cohesive and co-operative treatment plan between pet parent, general practitioner and specialist both possible and seamless.

Q&A

t a wedding you see the bare bones of a person; their laughter, tears and personal dynamics. It’s an opportunity to capture the authenticity of families combined with great style and design. This is my tenth wedding season photographing couples in Windsor and Essex County. I’ve learned a lot of things and have refined my technique, which is two-fold. First and foremost I tell the story. I take a documentary approach to photographing a wedding. There are so many tiny moments that people don’t notice until they’re going through their final proofs and they laugh or cry at glimpses of their day. Secondly, I love editorial photography and take every opportunity to see beauty in each angle and shadow. These are

the photos that make a wedding album an art piece or an aweinspiring portrait for the wall of your favourite room at home. I am a full service photographer, which means that I guide my clients through every process. I meet with them in person and build a relationship with them. I help them plan their engagement session, the timeline for their wedding day and create heirloom art pieces that they can treasure for generations. I am honoured to have worked with hundreds of people and families throughout the years, many whom have become friends. - Emma Davidson Lead Photographer & Owner of Karitas Photography www.karitasphotography.com emma@karitasphotography.com 519-564-5218

Why did you choose to be a wedding photographer?

What are your go-to locations in Windsor-Essex County for photos?

Wedding photography can make or break a person. It’s a challenge and there is a lot of pressure but it’s the greatest reward when you hand over the photos after all of the hard work and your client hugs you, thanks you or even sheds some tears. Where do you see yourself as a photographer in five years?

I’m always striving to learn more and enhance my skills. I would love to do some more traveling for photography, but overall just continue to move forward making amazing memories and being a better photographer overall.

S

p

l

u

r

Windsor has a lot of surprising places for portraits. I usually try to get to know my clients first to discover their style and what would reflect them best. For some people that’s the coffee shop where they met or walking down a trail. I’m also keeping in mind the lighting and time of day. Sometimes the best spot is nothing extraordinary, just a little evening light on your front porch. Emma’s most recent work can be viewed on her Facebook (@karitas.photography) and Instagram (@karitasphotography) accounts.

harram’s Jewellery is located in a stately heritage building in “Uptown” Leamington. This historic “gem” with turn of the century architecture was constructed in 1906 by the Union Bank of Canada. Wayne Wharram, President of Wharram’s Jewellery, purchased it from the Royal Bank of Canada in 1980. He takes as much pride in preserving this landmark as he does in serving the public with their jewellery needs. Numerous awards have been presented to Wharram’s Jewellery recognizing both the distinguished structure and their professionalism. For three generations now, the Wharrams have been committed to serving their customers with personalized service, professional expertise and integrity. “This is extremely important; especially in the jewellery industry today!” Wayne offers what he would call a “full service jewellery store” with nine staff members including gemologists, graduate jewellers, goldsmiths, engravers and sales associates to care for his clients.

Reflecting on the journey of his family’s business, Wayne recalls the skilled precision of his father and Certified Watchmaker, J. Russel Wharram, as he worked with his wife Gladys since 1955 in Uptown Leamington. Wayne’s career began in 1975, when he joined his mother as a Graduate Jeweller and Gemologist. Wayne and his wife Evelin (store Manager since 1998) are presently welcoming the third generation to their family business. g
