Why are there
so many breweries in WNC? “Drinking local harks back to the founding of Asheville in 1798. Whether it be moonshine or craft beer, the culture of local hooch is deeply ingrained in the mountain dwellers of Western North Carolina.” That supportive, enthusiastic culture, combined with high-quality naturally rock-filtered drinking water (beer is 90 percent water), and a small businessfriendly atmosphere make Asheville a natural spot to open a brewery. Yes, Asheville has one of the highest brewery-to-population ratios in the country, but the city also has dedicated craft beer drinkers who enjoy the variety of locally made beer plus a burgeoning beer tourist industry. ~Anne Fitten Glenn, including an excerpt from her book, “Asheville Beer: An Intoxicating History of Mountain Brewing”

Slightly Dysfunctional People Pleasers While I wouldn’t call them “dysfunctional,” I would definitely call them “people pleasers.” Mark and Polly, husband and wife co-owners of the Village Wayside Bar & Grille, put in the extra time and effort to be sure that every customer enjoys their dining experience. Customer service, cleanliness and consistently good food are their top priorities and it shows. From the immaculate dining room and bar to the extra attention they put into every dish, Mark and Polly have earned the respect of not only their peers in the service industry, but visitors and locals alike. Village Wayside Bar & Grille is located in the historic 1896 Biltmore Village Train Depot, a place where most visitors at that time got their first impression of Asheville. Mark continues the tradition of being an ambassador to Biltmore Village since the location is still where many tourists first stop when they come to town. It’s hard to have a bad first impression when you taste the sweet hibiscus peach tea brined turkey in his Turkey Rueben. The homemade sourdough is unmistakable. Potsy’s Piggies Cabbage Rolls are a family recipe and have such a reputation that people come from miles away to enjoy. Every dish has a story and is on the menu for a reason. The Doc’s DeCarlo Sandwich is a recipe borrowed from Doc Watson’s Restaurant in Toledo, Ohio where Mark and Polly met. The “to die for” Coconut Cream Pie was taken from a hand written recipe Mark found while cleaning out his late grandmother’s home. Then, of course, there is the beer. You’ll always find a local beer on tap and can even enjoy beer in some of their recipes, like the French Broad Kolsch beer that is used in their beer battered onion rings. Village Wayside Bar & Grille is one of the only places in the village open late night and you’re guaranteed to have good food and good service every time. Open Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-1 a.m. • Sun. 12p.m.-1 a.m. 30 Lodge St., Biltmore Village • Asheville, NC 28803 • 828.277.4121
