A Quick Guide to
BEER styles Here are a few beer styles you’re likely to encounter in WNC, though this is only a drop in the barrell compared to more than 50 styles listed by the Beer Judge Certification Program. Beer, my friends, is a complex animal.
Amber: Typically an ale that isn’t quite dark, but more amber-hued. Often toasted malt flavor. Hops profile can vary. India Pale Ale: IPAs are typically higher in hops bitterness than Pales. American hops tend to have a citrusy or piney aroma and flavor. A hoppy and bitter ale that often has higher alcohol by volume than a regular pale. Lager: Clear, crisp and dry. While domestic U.S. lagers have a sweetness that comes from corn or rice adjuncts, craft beer lagers will have more of a floral hop presence. Pale Ale: Typically medium bitterness with some malt aroma and flavor. A good basic beer to drink with a variety of foods. Pilsner: Clean, crisp lager style with a bit more hops, typically Noble hops which are aromatic but low in bitterness. Porter: Malty medium-full dark ale, with less of a strong roasted barley character than a stout. Stout: Very dark, sweet, full-bodied ale. Often tastes of coffee or chocolate from the roasted malts. Wheat beer: Typically fruity, spicy and bubbly. Never heavy. Refreshing beers that many like to drink during the warmer months.

Be a Beer
Adventurer Asheville is known as an adventurous little city and our breweries are no different. Perhaps you’re here for the arts, historical sites, or the great outdoors, but while visiting, why not have a beer adventure? With over 20 breweries in Western North Carolina (and more on the way), it’s easy to take a break and enjoy some fine fermentables from the brewery source, one of our many beer establishments, and bottle shops.
TIPS FOR TASTING: 1) O rder a flight. For a variety of flavors, ask your server if beer flights are available. Breweries and some bar/restaurants will offer 3-4oz sample flights--or, even half-pints and small pours--just ask! You’ll be able to try more beers along the way. When you find one you love, order a glass! 2) C hoose beers that sound tasty to you. Beer ratings are great, often helpful, but your palette is your own. Beer is a personal experience. Embrace it and drink what you like. Still unsure? Ask one of Asheville’s many knowledgeable beertenders. They are trained to guide you. 3) T ake some local beer home. Asheville is home to many great bottle shops. You can support a small brewery and a small business at the same time. Many places offer single bottles or mixed six-packs (and even ship to some states), so you can take your favorites home and share your beer adventure with friends.
Cheers and happy beer adventures! Enjoy your visit! Julie Atallah Bruisin’ Ales 14

Craft Beer through the seasons
At its heart, craft beer is an agricultural commodity. The farmers who grow the grains and hops that end up in your pint glass pay special attention to the weather, the length of day, and seasonal trends. These earthly cues also influence the seasonally conscious brewer. In the summer, we enjoy light and refreshing saisons and hefeweizens. In the fall, we celebrate the hop harvest with fresh hop ales. High-gravity bocks and barley wines help shake off the winter chills. In Western North Carolina, we are fortunate to enjoy a variety of beer styles year round, but some are especially fitting at certain times of the year. No matter when you visit the area, there will always be a fresh, seasonal brew waiting for you.
SPRING Bocks and strong ales with their high alcohol content offer a warming nip through the final days of winter. Celebrate the month of March with a French-style Bière de Mars, a malt-forward yet refreshingly dry farmhouse ale. A dark, roasty Irish stout is required on St. Patrick’s Day.
SUMMER Through the heat of summer, lighter ales and lagers provide cooling refreshment. Belgian-style saisons often feature summer crops – look for
18
locally grown fruit, herbs, and spices to make an appearance. Wheat beers, like the fruity and effervescent Bavarian-style hefeweizen, make for a pleasing afternoon in the sun.
