Why are there

so many breweries in WNC? “Drinking local harks back to the founding of Asheville in 1798. Whether it be moonshine or craft beer, the culture of local hooch is deeply ingrained in the mountain dwellers of Western North Carolina.” That supportive, enthusiastic culture, combined with high-quality naturally rock-filtered drinking water (beer is 90 percent water), and a small businessfriendly atmosphere make Asheville a natural spot to open a brewery. Yes, Asheville has one of the highest brewery-to-population ratios in the country, but the city also has dedicated craft beer drinkers who enjoy the variety of locally made beer plus a burgeoning beer tourist industry. ~Anne Fitten Glenn, including an excerpt from her book, “Asheville Beer: An Intoxicating History of Mountain Brewing”

197 Hilliard Avenue, Asheville • 828-575-9675 hiwirebrewing.com Hi-Wire features four approachable year-round “Main Attraction” beers – Prime Time Pale, Hi-Pitch IPA, Bed of Nails Brown, and Hi-Wire Lager – a rotating selection of seasonal offerings, as well as “Side Show Seasonals”, available exclusively at our tasting room. Come visit us in our Downtown Asheville Tasting Room seven days a week.

Asheville is known as an adventurous little city and our breweries are no different. Perhaps you’re here for the arts, historical sites, or the great outdoors, but while visiting, why not have a beer adventure? With over 20 breweries in Western North Carolina (and more on the way), it’s easy to take a break and enjoy some fine fermentables from the brewery source, one of our many beer establishments, and bottle shops.

Tips for Tasting: 1) Order a flight. For a variety of flavors, ask your server if beer flights are available. Breweries and some bar/restaurants will offer 3-4oz sample flights--or, even half-pints and small pours--just ask! You’ll be able to try more beers along the way. When you find one you love, order a glass! 2) Choose beers that sound tasty to you. Beer ratings are great, often helpful, but your palette is your own. Beer is a personal experience. Embrace it and drink what you like. Still unsure? Ask one of Asheville’s many knowledgeable beertenders. They are trained to guide you. 3) Take some local beer home. Asheville is home to many great bottle shops. You can support a small brewery and a small business at the same time. Many places offer single bottles or mixed six-packs (and even ship to some states), so you can take your favorites home and share your beer adventure with friends.

Cheers and happy beer adventures! Enjoy your visit! Julie Atallah

Craft Beer Through the Seasons At its heart, craft beer is an agricultural commodity. The farmers who grow the grains and hops that end up in your pint glass pay special attention to the weather, the length of day, and seasonal trends. These earthly cues also influence the seasonally conscious brewer. In the summer, we enjoy light and refreshing saisons and hefeweizens. In the fall, we celebrate the hop harvest with fresh hop ales. High-gravity bocks and barley wines help shake off the winter chills. In Western North Carolina, we are fortunate to enjoy a variety of beer styles year round, but some are especially fitting at certain times of the year. No matter when you visit the area, there will always be a fresh, seasonal brew waiting for you. Spring Bocks and strong ales with their high alcohol content offer a warming nip through the final days of winter. Celebrate the month of March with a French-style Bière de Mars, a malt-forward yet refreshingly dry farmhouse ale. A dark, roasty Irish stout is required on St. Patrick’s Day.

Summer Through the heat of summer, lighter ales and lagers provide cooling refreshment. Belgian-style saisons often feature summer crops – look for locally grown fruit, herbs, and spices to make an appearance. Wheat beers, like the fruity and effervescent Bavarian-style hefeweizen, make for a pleasing afternoon in the sun. Fall Oktoberfest kicks off the celebration of the fall harvest with amber-colored, Germanstyle Märzen lagers. The popular pumpkin beers start to appear as we inch toward the holidays. Fall is also the height of apple season. Take this opportunity to explore some of WNC’s cider makers. Winter Through the icy winter months, high-gravity “winter warmers” shield us from the cold and encourage holiday cheer. Look for rich imperial stouts, strong Scotch ales, and potent barley wines to warm the palate. Barrel aged ales are also timely in the winter. Year in and year out, it’s always a good time for craft beer in Western North Carolina! by David Ackley
