veryone enjoys blessings, and they come in all shapes and sizes. We all enjoy financial blessings, and the greatest blessing of all is when a new member is born
into the family. And then, of course, we are blessed every day with blessings that we often take for granted, such as the air we breathe, the heart that beats within us, and great relationships all around us. I’m writing today about blessings that are constant and dependable: the ones that come from the Word of God. Not only can we read about them, but we can also experience them. When it comes to blessings and direction for my life, one book of the Bible that I love is the Book of Ephesians. It’s so understandable and livable. I’m going to refer to a verse from each of the six chapters in Ephesians today and, by doing so, hopefully remind you of just how blessed you are as a believer in Christ. In chapter 1, we are told that we should praise God because He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. I encourage you to stop and think for a minute of the times when God blessed you. It starts with the blessing of salvation, but then He loads us daily with blessings from above. What do you need today? Is it healing, peace, or guidance in

God Cares About My Car Keys!

I don’t know. I gave the first puzzle I got in the mail to the local library, since the library checks puzzles out to people, at least when the library’s open and not COVID-ized. I decided to send the new puzzle back to the puzzle club. I got suckered into yet another Christian club by all the pretty pictures and hopes I cannot afford. (My post office

Walking Through Mourning

Rather, the prophet reminds the people of three things,

The Fight of Her Life
ast April, our lives and Olivia’s life was normal. We had just celebrated her fifth birthday a few weeks before. She was simply enjoying telling everyone how old she was with a whole hand, five fingers. She was busy with soccer, dance classes, and getting to learn the game of softball. Church choir was also new favorite. But the highlight for this kid, and her favorite role thus far, was being an older sister to her brother and sister, Eli and Ella. Life for this beautiful little girl was about as perfect as it could be. Then, on April 1, 2019, my wife, Sarah, and I began a journey that no parent would ever imagine they would set foot upon. A trip to the emergency room at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger for what we thought was appendicitis, turned out to be so much more. In a very small, cold, and eerie room we were taken, without Olivia. “There’s a mass in your daughter’s stomach.” We sat there. Silent. We listened in shock at what we were being told. “It’s pediatric cancer.” I don’t think we were really accepting to this right away, it’s still surreal. Pediatric cancer was the last thing on the list of things we expected could happen in our child’s life. More importantly, as a father, it’s something that I couldn’t fix. I couldn’t make better as I always promised I would

for each of my children. We were cornered, with our hands tied. Decisions needed to be made quickly. The cancer was consuming her body to the point that it looked like ivy was climbing up her aorta and down her abdomen into her pelvis. The size was beyond anything we were expecting. It wasn’t until a couple days later, through a biopsy, we found out exactly what we were up against: Stage IV High-Risk Neuroblastoma. Roughly 500– 600 kids annually in the U.S. are diagnosed with this specific type of cancer. “Rare.” “Aggressive.” “Intense.” Many words were shared with us, each painting a more vibrant and specific picture of what was trying to take down my first-born. Sarah and I received a couple of second opinions. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital called and said they would have an ambulance ready to pick us up in 12 hours. That Saturday morning, we loaded up with the clothes on our back and began a trip that still continues today. Sarah sat in the back of a cramped ambulance with Olivia, who was smiling and cheery, and me driving our car behind them the six hours to Memphis, TN. All I remember from that car ride was staring at brake lights and being on the phone with anyone and everyone, trying to make more decisions and how to
care for Ella and Eli. Any free time I had not on the phone was filled with blank stares, confused faces, and numbness. That car ride felt it went on for hours. We arrive in Memphis, meet our team, and get filled in on what to expect. “This treatment plan will last 13-15 months.” So, we had to adjust our life some and continue to make the best decisions possible for our children. After five rounds of chemotherapy, one resection surgery, one transplant, six rounds of immunotherapy, biopsies, four ICU visits, sprinkle in shots, countless sedations and scans, holidays, birthdays, celebrations, ups and downs, we are still at it. Fast-forward sixteen months. We had hoped to begin “normal” life back at home, making new memories with all of our family. Unfortunately, during Olivia’s end of treatment full-body evaluation in July 2020, two new spots appeared. However, all of the original disease is gone. Her journey thus far has been consisted much of this; “good and bad news”. We have learned to take all the good we can with the bad. This trend still continues today. Currently, COVID-19 has consumed our lives, much like it has most of the world. However, St. Jude, much like every hospital in the world, has taken numerous precautions to protect their
patients and families. One of those being the limiting of caregivers in housing to one; we had to pick who stayed with Olivia and who went home. So, the good is I am home with Ella and Eli more frequently, trying to keep their life more stable, while Olivia and Sarah are still at St. Jude. Olivia is now undergoing extensive treatment to combat the debilitating disease inside her. While inpatient for five days, every 21 days, she wakes up at 5 a.m., takes one pill for chemotherapy and another to help with her nausea, followed by a chemo drip for an hour and a half. After that, it’s 10 hours of antibodies, which are necessary, but make her body ache and keep her from sleeping. The antibodies finally stop around later that evening, and if she’s able, she might eat something light. Olivia doesn’t have much of an appetite during all of this, except for the occasional bites of a popsicle. She barely finds the energy to play a game or two with her favorite nurses. After five days of this routine, if her fever is down, Olivia is discharged to housing, where she gets a few weeks of rest before starting the cycle all over again. Yes, Olivia’s story is a tragic and heartbreaking one. Parents plan out their children’s future and imagine hundreds of scenarios. None of them include cancer. It’s such a rare family to be part of, but around here, around St. Jude and other pediatric centers across the world, it’s anything but rare. It’s the norm. We are comforted in the fact that Olivia’s story is still being written. From the beginning, her journey has been one of hope, community, and relying on faith to weather this storm. Her optimism and positive outlook has been much stronger than that of any five-
year-old I’ve ever met. The only thing that makes her 5 is the number. As my mother would say, “wise beyond your years.” Since Day 1, we have explained to Olivia what was happening and the things she might have to do, including losing her hair, and she took it incredibly well. She never complained about being in a hospital or having to leave Cleveland, saying “goodbye” to her friends and a life that she was just coming in to. Sure, she has moments where she misses various memories of a life before cancer, but she knows where she needs to be and what she needs to do. She has come to appreciate and accept the new life we have found ourselves part of. Her courage and strength alone has kept Sarah and I that much stronger. We all have been changed and continue to be transformed through this situation. We continue to be filled with life and joy to see how much she’s grown through her experience. As adults, we handle things the way we feel is most appropriate and those decisions help to develop us. Under the circumstances, I’d think that for most kids, it would slow them down to some degree and keep them from developing physically and mentally, but the past year has only seemed to accelerate her development. She’s challenged herself mentally. Emotionally, she’s grown and learned to handle things almost better than some adults would. She’s learned to cope with it and is comfortable in the situation because of her surroundings. She loves her nurses and her care team. They’re incredible and make her feel like she’s part of the family. They’ve taken a lot of the stress off us and allowed us to just parent and help her grow. All these variables impact her development and she has somehow found a way to use all of them to her advantage to get the most out of a terrible situation. Our faith has never been tested on such a level. I was recently asked, “How has your faith been shaken during this ordeal?” I explained how “shaken” is a tough word to describe what was happening to my faith and the faith of our family. I don’t feel like our faith has been shaken. Yes, we have certainly questioned the journey and why our daughter had to be the one to go through it. To me, the word “shaken” a negative connotation, indicating an unfortunate disturbance or something you
don’t really want to happen. I truly feel like it’s been enhanced and strengthened. Most of which is due to the amount of people who have messaged us, encouraging us and Olivia to continue on in faith. Olivia’s story, albeit sad and unfortunate right now, has already impacted the lives of people we will never meet. Our optimism and confidence in the plan Christ has for Olivia and our family has grown. People message almost daily, with encouragement and stories of how Olivia and her obstacles have impacted their lives. Stories saying their kids are now praying at bedtime for Olivia, getting more interested and active in having a prayer life, a wife who reads Olivia’s Facebook updates and story and her husband hearing it and makes a decision to turn to Christ. Families getting stronger, coming together unlike ever before because of a journey being made by a child they have never met. God is in the middle, in the front, and surrounding the situation. We have and will continue to praise him in every failure and every victory. Yes, decisions will be made, but we aren’t naive to think our decisions are changing the layout of the plan that God

has for her and that he hasn’t already planned everything out. There is a bigger picture being painted, and we get to watch with front-row seats His miracles unfold. Our eyes have certainly been opened wide to a variety of things, the medical field and pediatric cancer specifically. Outside of the frontline medical lingo and medication we have come to be more familiar with, we have become more familiar with the attention, or lack thereof, that is given to pediatric cancer. Finding out how underfunded pediatric cancer was completely blindsided me. Although Olivia does have a rare and unique cancer, pediatric cancer as a whole only receives 3-4 percent of the national budget. It’s one thing to focus on treatments and cures for older generations, but this is different. “Kids are our future” used to be for real. You don’t hear about pediatric cancer having breakthroughs, which is unfortunate because kids are being born every day, and they’re having to face different cancers, and diseases, and mutations. It blew my mind. There are clinical groups who work with pediatric cancer across the country, but it’s not a collaborative effort globally, where everyone is pitching in and trying to find cures together. St. Jude is a unique organization and has the flexibility to work with many organizations, and has affiliates across the country. They don’t only treat the patient, they care for the family, without asking for anything in return. The financial burden is lifted from

the family during, what would arguably be the most difficult time of their lives. And even if Olivia’s journey takes us somewhere else down the road, St. Jude has made our situation much more acceptable and possible. If there was an organization that is doing remarkable things in a very selfless manner, it’s St. Jude. Throughout our time here and in the middle of this storm that doesn’t seem to let up, we have heard and continue to be reminded of various versus from the Bible. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you…” Another verse is John 9:3, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” Philippians 4:13 is another strong verse for our family. It says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” And she’s had to—a lot more than any kid her age, younger, or older, should have to do to save her life. She’s taking obstacles and knocking them down. We would recite this verse every day before I dropped her off at daycare. I never knew how real it would be for us. As we move forward, we continue to be lifted up, standing on the shoulders of an army of believers and countless strangers who want nothing more than God’s plan to be fulfilled, and her body to be completely healed. We’ve been very blessed in the way that we have had people give in various ways, and separately through a trust that was created for Olivia. It has certainly taken a village to make everything that needed to happen. Our other family members have had to raise our other children, we’ve had to move out of our home where we began our lives and raised children, Sarah and I have had to sacrifice various aspects of our professional careers. We’ve been very blessed to have a lot of people who are taking care of us all around. There have been fundraisers for Olivia and St. Jude children, a race named for Olivia, t-shirts and bracelets being sold to benefit our family, and countless packages and letters that would always brighten our little warriors day. Ella and Eli would even receive packages randomly. Our family has not been forgotten or had to want for much at all. When I say we have been blessed at the most perfect and most random times when we least expect it, that
cannot be more understated. That’s another way our eyes have been opened: our lack of what we were doing before for others. Were we generous enough? Were we helpful to other people before all of this? We need to look for opportunities more often to help someone in their time of need. Being able to touch someone’s life without knowing their life story is something we try to encourage others to do. Our family encourages readers to continue to pray. Pray for complete healing and a completely clear scan and body, void of disease. We also pray for little-to-no side effects. We want her to grow up, have kids, live a full life—things every parent wants for their child. Pray for wisdom that we’re making the right decisions and that our sleepless nights are not in vain. Pray that our two other kiddos understand why mommy and daddy have to be here, not with them, and that they grow up without the feeling of being left out or forgotten. Here in Memphis, leaving Eli and Ella in Cleveland, is something we have to do. Just pray that Sarah and I can make the right decision at the right time and listen to His Word and His guidance to do the best we can because Olivia relies on us. Most importantly, pray that our strength and faith remain intact and we continue to remain faithful. As we continue on, we will be tested over and over. We have to remain fervent in our prayer and remember to give God the glory in and out. We are grateful and thankful for the many of you who have stood up for us, stepped in the gap, and made Olivia an honorary member of your family. Desire vs. Sacrifice verything starts in the mind: a thought or notion of how to obtain or achieve something greater than the current state. Whether it be financially, emotionally, mentally, or physically, everything begins in the infant stage of the thought process. Thoughts manifest over a duration of time, and for those thoughts to become tangible, DESIRE is awakened. I personally had a desire when I was 440 lb. to lose weight and become much healthier. My want/desire to lose the weight had all the ingredients it needed to begin my weight-loss journey. But there was one ingredient missing that I was not prepared for: SACRIFICE. This is the intangible that discourages most people who start a new journey to quit just a short time after they have started. That was me for many years because my mind had the desire to do something I’d never done, and it required a level of sacrifice that was not met in my heart. Sacrifice is a heart condition, and it requires daily action. Desire is a mental condition that is bred through multiple thoughts/ questions of what you want versus whether or not can you do it. Sacrifice does not go against desire; sacrifice will define your desire. I was 440 lb., and in 15 months, I lost 243 lb. My desire was to do the unexpected, and my sacrifice for the unexpected showcased my desire. My heart wanted to keep my old nutritional habits, but in order to fully achieve my desire, I had to let go of my wants and establish my new needs. The fight is real when it comes to keeping the desire you initiated in your mind. It is a daily, uphill battle, but Vince Lombardi said it best: “The harder you work, the hard it is for you to surrender.” People always say quitting isn’t an option when truthfully, it always is. But quitting is also a heart condition. Just like the story of the two wolves living inside of you, the one you feed is the one that will be dominant in your

everyday life. Will you feed the heart that always leans toward quitting? Or will you feed the heart that sacrifices for its desire to become tangible? Quitting is easy and fast, with no accountability for you. Sacrifice requires long and slow suffering for a cause that started with a personal desire and evolves into something much bigger than you. It instills a fire in you that will never cease and a legacy to pass on to your children. As I fought every day in my journey, I realized that I wasn’t just fighting for me. I was fighting for
others who did not have the tools I developed during my journey and who one day I would help. My faith in Jesus Christ is how I sustained my level of sacrifice: walking by faith and not by sight. Christ sacrificed Himself for all of us because God had a desire for His people. I did not know I would end up here; I just had faith that my daily sacrifices of habitual changes would lead me somewhere greater than I started. The Little Engine That Could… call her Choo Choo but, her real name is Susie. She is my daughter. This girl amazes me with everything she does, tries and experiences. She is not afraid. She is willing. She is able. She makes me laugh. I need more laughter. We all need more laughter. One thing she has jumped right into is hunting and fishing. She’s pretty good at both. As the 2020 Turkey season opened, our goal this season was for her to harvest her first mature Gobbler. Multiple early mornings were involved in this season and many situations were experienced. However, none were productive until… It was the morning of Friday, May 8, Susie shared the night before that she would give it one more try for a turkey. It was early, a clear quiet chilly morning for May. As we got to the hunting property darkness was all around us. We parked at the bottom of the hill to make an easy set-up about 50 yards near by hoping to intercept the gobblers as they flew down to meet the hens that regularly walked that way. Walking in the dark we had the pop-up blind, chairs, guns and calls in tow. At our location, set-up took just a few minutes and we were settled comfortably in the blind. About 45 minutes had passed when the morning birds started to chirp. The world was beginning to wake up when a loud resounding gobble rang out 75 yards behind us. Within a few minutes we had multiple more gobblers, young and old, joining in. Knowing they would eventually come this way, I kept quiet and did not call. Right a daylight I heard a cackle and fly down of a few hens that were near by in the woods. About 30 minutes had passed, I looked over at Susie and she was fast asleep in her chair bundled up in the extra camo coat. As I scanned through the blind opening, I saw a hen making her way from the woods behind us. Out of nowhere, there was one, two, three, four gobblers. All were trailing the hen while strutting along the way. I gently poked Susie who opened her eyes and I held up 4 with my fingers and pointed. She slowly sat up and reached for her 20-gauge turkey shotgun. She noticed which one was the biggest and shared with me the one she wanted to take. She took aim on the red, white and blue head and she slowly pulled the trigger. BOOM! She had hit it but it ran

right towards the blind. Knowing it was hit I whispered to reloaded. She quickly loaded another shotshell as the turkey stepped out from behind a brush pile that the blind was next to. She readjusted to her right, took aim and BOOM! Gobbler down. She squealed with excitement as hugs, high fives and fist bumps commenced. Stepping out of the blind, we walked over to this beautiful mature bird. We admired what God had created and thanked Him for what He had blessed us with. We
talked through how it all happened and how components of the hunt like faith, opportunity, not giving up, being alert, having someone looking out for you and remaining calm, relates to life. As was began the tagging process of the bird, we were amazed that she had harvested a 21.5lb, thick 11.25” beard, 1.0” spur Gobbler. What an incredible bird. I hugged her once more and whispered, “You will always be my Choo Choo. The little engine that could”. About The Author

Sonny’s Trees

y backyard joins a beautiful field of grasses and wildflowers that all merge at the top of a small rise where a red barn stands. It’s a calm, restful place to walk or look upon and relax. One thing stands out in that
field to me. There are 10 pecan trees proclaiming a remarkable story in that bountiful field. Sonny, my neighbor, planted the trees. Although he was aware he would probably not enjoy the pecans from these trees, he planted them anyway. He wanted someone to enjoy them. He also understood those individuals would probably never know about him and his trees. He was okay with that. Sonny understood how to be a blessing 40 // August 2020
for another person. First of all, he wanted to do it. He wanted to give this to another person. Second, he put the work into it and planted the trees. Third, he maintained and nourished the trees in their critical time. Finally, he was thankful to God that he had the opportunity to plant these trees for people in the future. Oh, and one more thing: Sonny never boasted about all of this. Other people told his story (actually, it sort of slipped out), but he never did. That was Sonny’s way. Always smiling, happy, and pleasant, he shared with everyone and made the lives of those around him much better. He was blessed and wanted others to be blessed. That meant giving time, energy, effort, and attention without asking for praise. It meant planting trees when almost no one knew and knowing he would never enjoy the fruits. Not long ago, Sonny lost a battle with cancer. His powerful faith and witness never diminished. It’s not the same without him. In the field, I see Sonny’s trees, and I want to plant a tree.

Easy-Peasy Fruit Salad Recipe by Pam Wattenbarger
T
his is an easy, versatile fruit salad with a 10-minute prep time. The pudding mix will blend with the fruit juices to create a sweet, creamy base that enhances the flavor of the fruit. Naturally glutenfree, it’s the perfect recipe for summer when fresh fruits are in season. Don’t like strawberries or peaches? Substitute your favorite fruit instead. Good substitutions are blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries.
Ingredients • 4 peaches, peeled and cubed • 1 (16-ounce) container of strawberries, washed, stems removed, and sliced • 3 bananas, peeled and sliced
1. In a medium bowl, mix the peaches, strawberries, and bananas together gently. 2. Stir in the instant vanilla pudding mix until the fruit mixture is coated. 3. Refrigerate until serving. This is best made an hour in advance to allow the flavors to meld.

If He provides so wonderfully for the lilies of the field, how could we ever doubt that He will provide exactly what we need? “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). God knows our needs, even before we petition Him, and He promises to provide for ALL our needs “according to His riches in glory.” This verse speaks to me literally. My Father will not be half-hearted or skimpy with His provisions, but He will provide extravagantly for me! Isn’t

Our Father in Heaven is creative. It is His nature to create. As His children, we have His nature infused into us. Creativity, in whatever form it takes, is a valid pursuit because it is God who has created that desire within us. We are like Him, and He is creative. Our desire to pursue creativity makes us like Him. It is valid to create. There is value in creating. Time spent creating is not time wasted. God spent whole days creating. He set aside time to create something very specific and wonderful and made sure He told us about it. God found value and pleasure in taking time to create. Not only does God find value in creating, but He also finds value in creating with and through us. Set aside a block of time and invite the Holy Spirit to create with you, and see what happens! You will find He will meet you there every time. Third, God gave you a voice. God’s creative expression was through the spoken word, “Let there be…” Our voices can be heard through what we create. People feel something when they look at a painting, read a book, or enjoy the atmosphere created within your home. That is your voice being expressed loud and clear! Your message is being heard. You may not be speaking to everyone, but you are speaking to someone. You have a God-given voice that can be expressed through your creativity.

God gives us the vision to appreciate what we create. At the end of each day, God looked at what He had done that day and saw that it was good. He wasn’t boastful. He wasn’t filled with a prideful spirit. He simply saw that what He had done was good. Our Father gives us the best example. It is okay to look at what you have created and call it good! As you move from beginner to master in your chosen field of creativity, you have permission to call
your work good no matter where you are on your creative journey. It is emulating your Heavenly Father to see what you have done is good and call it so. Our Heavenly Father loves to create. He also put that desire within us. He shows us through example that creativity has value and is a valid way to spend our time. Creativity gives voice to what God has put inside of us to share with others. God gives us vision to see what we create is good. Let’s journey with our Father via the creativity He has placed within us.
