all is a beautiful time of the year with all the colors of the trees. There is a verse in the Bible that reminds us of why it is so beautiful. “God has made everything beautiful for
its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The fall weather is cooler, it is great
to be outside, and it is a great time to do fun activities with your family. Perhaps, you could ask your parents for a family meeting to talk about some fun things to do together. As you meet, ask each family member to name one thing they would like to do for the fall. The list could include: • Go to a football game and enjoy popcorn for a snack • Visit an apple farm and pick apples • Visit a corn maze • Visit a pumpkin farm and pick out a pumpkin to carve as a family • Have a picnic in the park or your backyard • Rake leaves and then jump in the leaves. You could make “leaf angels” as you would snow angels • Go for a bike ride or hike • Make a pinecone bird feeder thankful for, which includes family and friends. Fall gives us the opportunity to show our appreciation to others by doing things for them. The following are ideas you could do as a family: • Bake an Apple Pie • Make Pumpkin Bread • Make Hot Chocolate Packets • Make Caramel Apples • Make Apple Cider Packets • Make Apple Muffins • Make a Trail Mix and include Candy Corn A Family Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to spend time together. As a family plan to do five Saturday Hunts where you do one category each Saturday! It will be fun finding places you can discover these things to do. Even though there are some of the same scents in each category, find different places for each category. Make a list and check each one off as you do the activity. 1. LOOK for leaves of the following colors: Orange, Yellow, Red, for a squirrel and spider web

Looking Beyond

s I sit and watch the minutes tick away on
they have found a way to look beyond themselves to
the clock, waiting for my mother’s surgery,

ninety-six and has fallen and broken her ankle. The doctor said it is the worst break she could have. I have watched her for several days and listened to her anxious thoughts about the surgery. What she has concentrated on the most is getting past the pain, the

Finally, after eating his third plate of food, cousin Jordan River pushed back his chair and began to take off his shoes. Grandpa asked, “What are you doing?” Cousin Jordan River replied, “I don’t work after supper.” “He done ate all our vittles and we got no work from him! I need a helper,” said Grandpa. I asked Grandpa, “Did you not say or do something?” He replied with Deuteronomy 24:14, “Thou shalt not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy

Hoping he had found them all, the tall boy reluctantly returned home expecting the worst. “Grandpa, the chickens got loose,” the tall boy confessed sadly, “but I managed to find all twelve of them.” “Well, you did real good grandson,” Grandpa beamed, “because you only left with seven.”

We thanked Him for being our helper.” “The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him a habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him” (Exodus 15:2).

Dissonance Demands Resolution issonance: a mixture or union of harsh, unharmonious sounds (or life-events), which are grating or unpleasing to the ear (or to life). Musically, the dissonance is commonly used in “driving” a melody towards its ending. JS Bach often used elaborate, dissonant, extended chords at the end of his organ music. The elongated tension can even be stressful! Is our loving Father allowing the dissonance of our days in our Nation to extend to a place where we will cry out as one, “Resolve this dissonance created by wickedness, dear God! Come, drive unrighteousness from our land! Let it fulfill Your divine purposes!
Remember what God told Solomon at the temple dedication, recorded for us in 2 Chronicles 7:14 (paraphrased)— [When things are really going south, with your whole world in great dissonance] if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray, seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I [will bring wonderful resolution to their discordance]. In our times of personal dissonance, can we bring ourselves to cry out the Name of Jesus? He is the resolution to every dissonance! The Name above every name that is named. Whatever dissonance is creating havoc in your life, whether your body, your family, your work, your finances, or—as it affects all of us—our country, begin and continue to proclaim the Name above every name over every dissonance, crying for genuine resolution. Start now and don’t stop.

There are times that dissonance will remain for a season. But those times remain only to remind us to always return again and again to the Name above all names. The Apostle Paul experienced a dissonance, he called it a “thorn in the flesh.” He was told that it remained to remind him of God’s total sufficiency to realize successes in the face of dissonance. Apostle Paul’s resolution came only at the end of his life here. But what could be more beautiful and satisfying than “resolving” life’s dissonance by stepping at last into our Lord’s presence? (Could you work with that?) In the way our Father works, extended dissonance brings victories right in the face of the enemy’s plans for failure. That is often His style. For us, in the process of waiting, our wise Father is exposing wickedness in our land—first among His own people and simultaneously in our political system. Wickedness threatens our very existence. What glaring dissonance we are experiencing! In our times, however, as the dissonance tests our faith, be assured that a glorious resolution is coming. Once again, the Name of the Lord will be exalted in this land. There is coming the wonderful sound of revival in the earth! Life has many times of dissonance, but its greatest quality is that it points out and calls for God’s harmonious resolution. Do not give in to the frustration that may come. Remember the Apostle Paul’s remarkable exclamations in Romans 8:27-28 NLT. (Read it all again). In part, “…the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” Call on Jesus for your resolution to life-dissonances. His resolution will make beautiful music that will surprise you. “But God demonstrated His Love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners [in great dissonance with God’s plans], Christ died for the ungodly,” Romans 5:8.

Sweet Soldiers er daughter’s voice is gentle and rhythmic as she reads a familiar passage of Scripture. The mother whispers the words under her breath nearly verbatim, recalling verses from childhood now decades ago. And yet, she cannot recall which day it is or where she is, or even why she is there. She needs her daughter nearby for caregiving. Caregivers are an important part of a community. They offer structure and comfort to those who are hurting or coping with struggles. They battle overwhelming challenges while caregiving with gentleness. These gentle and tender caregivers can also fiercely advocate for their loved ones. In the face of exhaustion, isolation, financial woes, and complicated care plans, they sweetly soldier on. Does Scripture give any reference to caregiving? Certainly! Ruth was a caregiver to Naomi (see the book of Ruth in the Bible). It was about this time of year when Paul wrote to Timothy to bring supplies and even his cloak. So, we know winter was quickly approaching. Paul could not leave prison, so he was dependent on caregivers to meet his needs (2 Timothy 4:13). David was a caregiver to a distressed Saul when the young shepherd played music for the King (1 Samuel 16:14-23). After he became king, David was a caregiver to Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth when he moved him to his own house and included the young boy in family meals (2 Samuel 9:7). Additionally, our Lord is described as a gentle shepherd in the 23rd Psalm. His meticulous care is narrated in those famous six verses. The late Pastor Joe Charles Taylor of Cleveland, TN, used to close services by reminding his congregation, “Pray for the caregivers.” He is the first and only pastor I have ever known to say that from the pulpit—more need to. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, Paul offers a prayer that relates to caregiving: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.”

Do you know a caregiver? Offer support any way you can—hand-written notes, meals, running errands, or coordinating appointments are ways to come alongside a caregiver. What if you truly care but do not have much time to help? Here are some ways that could be helpful within a busy schedule: • Leave a voicemail or voice text with an encouraging message. Hearing the tender concern in another’s voice can lift the spirit. Do this randomly or pick a time each week to reach out consistently.
• Copy an article about caregiving, then jot down an encouraging note in the margin, or email the link and include a few sentences of gratitude and appreciation. • Pray specifically for their needs. Email or text the caregiver that you are praying routinely. • Team up with someone who has more time. Coordinate a meal or address an obligation with each of you taking a portion. There is no need to go it alone. Teamwork builds joy and community too. Are you a caregiver? Allow yourself to receive help when it is offered. The offer can be a rare and precious gift aimed at giving you strength, refreshment, and joy.

and operated, Salt Boxx came to life in May 2021 with owners Denise Moczydlowski & Jaimee Loomis—a mother and daughter team from South Florida. We experienced our first Salt Therapy session in South Florida several years ago and knew we had to share this non-invasive holistic treatment with many more people. Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bread by Pam Wattenbarger
T
his Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bread recipe makes a thick, dense bread that combines all
the favorite flavors of fall. It’s delicious for breakfast or for snacks, especially when served warm with a pat of butter. Be sure to use canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling. The pecans can be omitted or walnuts can be substituted. For anyone who needs a gluten-free version, simply substitute 1 cup of Oneto-One Gluten-free Baking Mix for the all-purpose flour.
Ingredients • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking soda • ½ teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • ½ teaspoon allspice • 1 cup sugar • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened • ½ cup butter, softened • 4 large eggs • 1 (15-ounce) canned pumpkin
Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and allspice until blended. Set aside. 3. Place the sugar, cream cheese, and butter in a large mixing bowl. Using a mixer, blend at medium speed until the mixture is combined. 4. Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix until blended after each addition. Add the canned pumpkin. Mix until blended. 5. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture. Stir until moistened. Stir in the pecans, if using. 6. Spray two 9” by 5” bread pans with nonstick cooking spray. Divide the batter equally between the two pans. 7. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, checking every five minutes after 30 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center of the loaves comes out clean.

Who In the World Is Gene Hickerson?

his is an exciting time for football fans as we look forward to seeing how our favorite teams will perform this season. We toss
around names like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Derrick Henry, and many other popular players. If we think back to the 70s, names like Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, and Lynn Swann come to mind. Fans from the 50s and 60s remember legendary running back Jim Brown. Then there is Gene Hickerson. Gene Hickerson? Who in the world is Gene Hickerson? Gene Hickerson played right guard for the Cleveland Browns from 1958-1973. In his time with the Browns, Hickerson anchored the offensive line, leading the way for running backs Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell, and Leroy Kelly. Behind the blocking of Hickerson and the other linemen, Brown led the league in rushing eight years and Kelly led the league for two years. Brown, Mitchell, and Kelly were all three inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. by football fans, no one seems to know the name of Gene Hickerson. In 2007, Hickerson was finally inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. Confined to a wheelchair, he was pushed on stage by Jim Brown, Bobby Michell, and Leroy Kelly—once again leading the way for the star running backs. Offensive linemen labor in the trenches doing an important job, their names often unknown by the average fan. Likewise, many of us have roles serving the body of Christ behind the scenes unnoticed. However, like Gene Hickerson, our roles are equally

important as those serving in the forefront—each one performing their duty for the glory of God. Everyone sees the pastor and the singers. Yet, we cannot forget the importance of those we do not see, such as the Audio Team working to allow us to hear clearly. We must not forget those who empty the trash, vacuum the carpet, and clean the bathrooms. Equal honor should be bestowed on those who greet visitors and take care of the groundskeeping.
