Thoughts to ponder...

“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” - John Quincy Adams “Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong.” - Bryce James “Patriotism is like charity — it begins at home.” - Henry James “Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind.” - John F. Kennedy “This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in.” -Teddy Roosevelt “My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.” -Adlai Stevenson “What is the essence of America? Finding and maintaining that perfect, delicate balance between freedom to and freedom from.” -Marilyn Savant “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” -Martin Luther King Jr.

Dear Battle of the Sexes: Our vacation is coming soon, but I think I might lose my mind before it does. My husband likes to have every minute of our vacation planned and mapped out - it drives me crazy! I feel like we’re on a school trip with the kids, rather than a relaxing vacation. I am trying to convince him to relax on the scheduling, but I don’t think it’s working. I want to look forward to a little R&R and might have to go on vacation by myself to get it! Wish me luck! - Anonymous, Lock Haven Dear Battle of the Sexes: My wife loves to entertain, and so do I - to a point. However, I am getting a little tired of having people at our house every single weekend - weekend after weekend after weekend. And, I am also tired of forking out the extra money she is spending on food to feed all these guests she keeps inviting. I want to come to a happy medium with her, but the minute I mention that, she gets all defensive and says that I am just being cheap. Granted, it might sound like I am being cheap, but honestly, a little frugality might be a good thing. All I am asking for is to limit our get togethers to just twice a month - rather than every weekend. Is that too much? - Bah Humbug Host Send your responses to these letters, or mail in your own gripes to: “Good News” P.O. Box 999, McElhattan, PA 17748 or email: goodnews@kcnet.org The opinions expressed in this column are those of the letter writers and are not necessarily shared by the “Good News” Staff.

By Russel Moldovan - Minister of Blanchard Church of Christ P.O. Box 188, Blanchard, PA 16826 • 570-962-2423 Why? Why? That is the question we ask when pain hits our lives, when our circumstances change, and we realize that our situation will never be the same as before. It is at times like these that we cry out and beg for a miracle to rescue us and change us. Sometimes God does change those circumstances; other times he does not. When he does not, we may question why God does not perform the miracle. Could it be that the miracle is performed when we in our suffering console others who face the same affliction as we press on fighting the good fight and keeping the faith. Through our suffering we become a source of strength and hope for the others in their plight. Often God allows us to stay in the tempest so that we can be a lighthouse for others in the storm. In his suffering, the Apostle Paul offered this blessing to God: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God (1 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Inside The Box :

By Jonathan Schwab

An Introductory Handshake in Print

New can be exciting and energizing. Excited and energized described my feelings September 19, 2003. Next morning wake-up call at 6 am, 7 am departure, first-ever football broadcast at 1 pm. New can be scary and overwhelming. Scared and overwhelmed described my feelings September 20, 2003. I woke up at 7:13 am to my broadcast partner banging on my dorm room door. Somehow, I had knocked the plug on my alarm clock out of the outlet at the left of my bed. I threw clothes on, grabbed my notes, and my first-ever distinct memory of being a sports broadcaster was permanently etched into my mind. More than anything, new represents a dive into the unknown. This column is an introduction of myself to all of you as WQBR and I come together to expand our reach into a new and exciting place. Beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year, WQBR will serve as the sole rights holder for Lock Haven University athletics. We will broadcast games for 11 different Lock Haven teams either on WQBR, on our new online streaming venue, or on both. I am thrilled to be able to continue into my third season as the play-by-play voice of the Bald Eagles. My career traces like a road map through Pennsylvania; a year spent as a newspaper reporter in Ridgway, five years with WHLM Radio in Bloomsburg, followed by a year and a half at ESPN Radio Williamsport. Through my past experiences, I have grown to love shining the light on the stories behind the coaches and athletes we follow. That passion will shape this monthly column. I’ll place the focus on a different coach or athlete each month to bring their personalities to life. I can’t wait to start working for a company which has spent more than two decades building the trust of this community through commitment to local coverage. Now, we’re going to do it as Clinton County’s sports leader. Set your alarm, here we come. Carrying in-season equipment at competitive prices

Can We Join Your Family?

Quason & Daequan

Children Waiting For A Home...

Quason, 13, and Daequan, 11, reside in the same foster placement and are so close that they share almost all the same interests and goals. Both are so passionate about sports that they want to play professionally some day in either the NBA or the NFL. Daequan is also considering a career in rap music. The brothers enjoy playing basketball, testing their skill at video games, listening to music, bike riding and eating chicken and seafood. Quason and Daequan agree that their prized possession is the IPod, that making the basketball league is their proudest achievement, and that Christmas is their favorite holiday. In their foster placement they take out the trash, help around the yard and cook meals. The brothers want very much to be adopted by the same family so they can grow up together.

Tyrek, 13, is often described as being “very laid back.” He loves watching and playing sports, especially baseball and football. When indoors, Tyrek can frequently be found in front of the television testing his skills at a variety of video games. He loves the challenge, and is willing to play anyone.Tyrek does well in school and routinely receives above average grades. His grades have improved the most in history. Gym is his favorite class. In his foster placement, Tyrek cheerfully does many chores and willingly helps out whenever aid is needed. Tyrek has experienced many separations and losses in his young life and dreams of the day when he will have a permanent family with a mom and a dad and maybe some other children that he could play with. Tyrek loves pets and it would be great if there are some in the home.

Jasmine

Tyrek

Fun loving, social and athletic, Jasmine’s favorite activities include spending time with her friends, dancing to hip hop music, and playing competitive sports, especially basketball. In fact, the 17-year-old loves this sport so much that she would like to play it professionally some day. Recently, she has become passionate about cooking, and delights in creating a variety of meals, which anyone who tries them say are delicious. Jasmine likes school and is a good student, earning mostly A’s and B’s. While she likes all her subjects, gym is her favorite class. She hopes to attend college before embarking on a career. Currently, Jasmine would like to volunteer at a place where the experience would lead to a part-time job. More than anything else, Jasmine yearns to be adopted.

There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.

Fourth of July Safety Tips By Calico Creek Vet Clinic

The Fourth of July, and the days leading up to the Fourth, can be a dangerous and frightening time for pets. In addition to the risks of injuries and burns, many pets are fearful of the excitement and noise created by fireworks. They may act irrationally or fearful and panic, going to great lengths to escape their normal enclosures, jump fences or chew through leashes. When in distress, pets can run incredibly long distances, may lose their sense of direction and end up far from home (or, many scared pets attempting to run from the noise can dart into roads and be injured or killed). More runaway and lost pets end up in animal shelters on this holiday than any other time of the year. Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe. Never use fireworks around pets! While exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets, even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many types contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium nitrate, arsenic, and other heavy metals. Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to the Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area at home. Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and stomach irritation could still result from ingestion, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers. If you think your pet has eaten something poisonous, stay calm and contact your veterinarian for advice, or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-800426-4435. Remember, your family veterinarian is your complete source of medical knowledge and guidance for all of your pet’s health care needs. www.bear999.com

Shoebox Letters’ “Honest Truth” starts up where Shoebox’s last cd “Better Time” left off: Great songs featuring sweet harmonies and a warm, comfortable sound, dominated by acoustic guitar, mandolin, accordion, and steel and baritone guitars. Shoebox Letters hail from the rain-soaked streets of Portland, Oregon. Their music is an intoxicating blend of roots rock and alternative country. The band debuted in June 2009 and currently features Dennis Winslow on guitars and vocals; Dave Stricker on bass; Stephanie Pranzetti on vocals; Daria Chick on vocals; David Allen Baker on vocals and multi-instrumentalist and Producer Ronn Chick. The band has evolved into an acoustic-based amalgam of country, blues, folk and bluegrass - that evolution is apparent on the new “Honest Truth,” a disc that belongs in your personal collection!

DR. DAVE’S Top DVD’s

1) The Lego Movie Who would have thought this would be any good? The surprise hit of 2013 uses artful 3-D technology, a great story and so many funny lines that you have to see it twice to make this a film you have to own - Buy it! 2) The Grand Budapest Hotel Wes Anderson’s best flick so far - an adult comedy that combines old screwball comedy and action that could have been part of a 3 Stooges movie...you need to see this...Rent it! 3) Robocop A remake that shouldn’t have been. Awful. Avoid it! 4) Walk of Shame How you will feel if you rent this awful flick. Elizabeth Banks is a talented actress - she deserves so much better than this Avoid it! 5) Joe I had just about given up on Nicholas Cage - but returning to his independent roots and this wonderful story has provided him a re-birth - he plays an ex-con who tries really hard to overcome his criminal tendencies - Rent it!

Bear Bites Great places to grab a bite!

July is National Ice Cream Month! • It takes 12 lbs. of milk to make just one gallon of ice cream. Wonder how they fit it all in one carton? • The U.S. enjoys an average of 48 pints of ice cream per person, per year, more than any other country. Maybe we should make ice cream the fifth food group! • It takes an average of 50 licks to polish off a single-scoop ice cream cone. • 80 percent of the world’s Vanilla Bean used for ice cream is grown in Madagascar. • The most popular topping for ice cream is.…chocolate syrup • Immigrants at Ellis Island were served vanilla ice cream as part of their Welcome to America meal. • One out of every five ice cream eaters share their treat with their dog or cat. • The biggest ice cream sundae in history was made in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 1988, and weighed in at over 24 tons. • The ice cream cone’s invention is linked to the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. An ice cream vendor reportedly didn’t have enough dishes to keep up with demand. They sought help from a nearby waffle vendor, and together, they made history! • The most popular flavor of ice cream is vanilla. After it come chocolate, strawberry, and cookies n’ cream. • One of the most unusual ice cream flavors is hot dog flavored ice cream that was created in Arizona. • Market analysts confirmed that ice cream sales increase many times during times of recession or wars. • The ice cream “Brain Freeze” effect is triggered when cold ice touches the roof of your mouth, which causes blood vessels in the head to dilate. TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL BEACH DAYS WITH KIDS

Go early. It’s a great idea to try and be on the beach by 9:30am. That way if the kids have a meltdown, and need a nap, you have the option of attempting to get them to sleep on the beach, or if that fails, leaving early but still feeling like you got a decent amount of time playing in the water and sand. Have good coverage. There are many tents made specifically for on the beach. They are great to have available for the kids to take a nap in. On windy days, just put rocks, and/or the cooler in the corners to hold it down. Kids from all over the beach tend to flock to it to play inside. And it dries quickly so if something spills, you can dunk the whole thing in the ocean and it will be dry within 30 minutes. Think about bathroom options. It’s a great idea is to buy a folding travel potty and bring it to the beach. When your kids have to use the potty, and inevitably, they always do, they can either do so in the tent (if you get one), or if the car is close by, they can do so in the back of the car. A good brand of baggies are the most consistent, reliable bags to use with the potty, as they don’t leak. Don’t forget the wipes and toilet paper. Plan for hunger and thirst. A well-stocked cooler is a must. Give each child a big water bottle filled with ice and a little water (since everything melts so quickly). The cooler should be filled with sliced up oranges, whole apples, cheese sticks, grapes, chips, and other healthy snacks. Create a place to eat with limited sand exposure. Find a great beach table. They work great for the kids to put their water bottles in the holders, and use the table for lunch time. Don’t forget the obvious. Chairs for everyone (or inevitably your kids will take yours), towels, lots of sunscreen (which should be applied before you get to the beach, a beach umbrella, goggles, hats, sunglasses (including back-up pairs), and a beach cart to get everything to the beach. Have a variety of things to play with. For toys, bring the traditional pails, shovels, and water guns. The shovels are GREAT for digging holes to bury the kids’ legs, as well as for making great sand castles and temporary homes for hermit crabs and other critters.

Once you are at the beach, encourage your kids to take a little time to relax, socialize with other kids, and, of course, search for beach animals. Happy beaching! Timely, helpful, and realistic info you can apply

To your Health! to improve your life through better health! Tip Sheet: Treating Minor Summer Injuries Summer, with all the cooking, hiking, camping, sports, and travel, provides limitless potential for allergies and injuries. A quick guide to dealing with summertime mishaps:

A burn is not a bun -- don’t butter it. According to Richard O’Brien, MD, an emergency physician at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, PA., you should run cold water on the burned area for at least 10 minutes, then apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment. If it hurts, put a cloth bandage on and a cold, dry compress, like a bag of frozen vegetables. Butter just adds germs and foreign proteins. Pinch your nose, don’t throw your head back, to stop a nosebleed. Press the fleshy part of your nose below where your glasses sit and hold it for 10 minutes by the clock. Don’t keep checking to see if it stopped yet -- it may not have. Then you have to start over. Clean cuts and scrapes with water and soap and bandage lightly. The old air-dry philosophy is losing favor. Bandaged cuts are less likely to be reopened. If a cut will not stop bleeding, seek medical attention. Peroxide, by the way, may slow the healing process. Stick with soap and water or just plain water. Smear on antibiotic cream and cover. If you twist a joint, apply cold if there is swelling. If swelling persists for days or even weeks, consult a doctor. If you cannot stand or walk, you should also seek attention. Put cool compresses on sunburn. Some people use vinegar and water, but this is not recommended. Put on cold compresses; to pull more heat from the skin, try something like Noxzema cream. To calm the irritation, take ibuprofen unless forbidden by your doctor. Don’t squeeze a bee sting to get the stinger out. If the bee has left the stinger behind, as evidenced by blackish particles on the skin, try scraping these off with a credit card. Do not squeeze the stinger or venom still in the sac may get into your system. If you have trouble breathing, call 911. Allergies to bee stings can be fatal. If you get a snakebite, do not suck the wound. Never try to get the blood flowing from a snakebite and don’t suck or suction it. Don’t run; loosen clothing, remove rings, and get to a hospital ASAP. If you get motion sickness, try to find a still place or get out of the moving vehicle. Don’t drink or you will vomit the fluid. As you recover, a cracker and water or ginger ale can help. If you take Dramamine, don’t drive. If you get poison ivy, don’t worry, no one can catch it from you. Even scratching it will not spread it once the poisonous oil is washed from your hands. Apply calamine lotion and if you are not driving, take an antihistamine like Benadryl. If you get a chemical in your eye, wash it out for 15 minutes. If it’s still painful, seek medical attention. Never use a piece of meat on a black eye or on an injured eye -- it only introduces more bacteria. Try a bag of frozen veggies instead. Ask Greta

“Fourth of July!” use answers from page 61!

Dear Greta, I am a man in my late sixties. I live alone now. My health is not that good. I have children from two of my three marriages. I really am not interested in becoming involved in another relationship, I watch television all day, go out for a walk in the afternoon and pick up some groceries for supper. On Friday, I have supper out. People rarely call. I didn’t get as far as I would have liked in life, and I spend a lot of time thinking about the past, and sometimes I just go over the many mistakes I have made wishing I had done things differently. What should I do? - Lonely Old Man Dear Lonely Old Man, Sometimes it is hard to accept the past. We need to focus on the good things, and realize that we all have made choices based on our limited abilities. As a friend I admire very much says, “We do the best we can.” Is there a pastor or doctor you can talk to about your thoughts? I would recommend it. Sounds like you need to get out and get more involved in life. There is nothing like a small, cute dog to help you focus on something else beside yourself. A dog is fun. A dog needs to be walked often and the exercise will be beneficial to your outlook. Dogs are also the best people magnets I know. Pick a small heartbreaker. I have seen this work with many lonely people.

Thought For The Day

“There’s no need to be perfect to inspire others. Let people get inspired by how you deal with your imperfections.”
