hen Amey Patterson left high school, she enrolled in a training center for adults with disabilities
where her “job” was pulling weeds day after day in a hot garden. Soon after she came to Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program in Lakeland.
★★★★★
5
It was there that she began to blossom. In time Amey progressed from sorting wares for the outlet store to mastering the much more complex job of cashier. During her time at the Goodwill outlet store, she says, she enjoyed making money and making friends. And, she came bursting out of her shell. “At first I was shy, I didn’t want to talk to nobody. I didn’t say one word. Now they can’t get me to stop talking!” Amey’s progression eventually led her to seek employment in the community. Now she is employed at TJ Maxx, where she has worked for one year. Her goal is to keep that job and continue to grow.
The youngest of four children, Amy now lives independently with her brother who is also enrolled in Goodwill’s Life Skills program. Together they pay their bills and share the housekeeping chores. Amey now schedules her own transportation to and from work, something she learned from her Goodwill job coach.
“I do it myself now, and I’m proud of myself!” 6

oe Tuzo was just an eight-year-old boy at hockey practice in Canada when he learned his parents were killed in a snow-related car accident. He
remembers telling his hockey coach to keep him in the game. The only child later laid a hockey puck next to their grave.

After that unimaginable loss, Joe’s life went on a downward spiral. He was sent to live in Boston with an aunt and uncle. During Joe’s teenage years he fought continually with his uncle and the uncle became abusive. That’s when the Department of Children and Families stepped in, and sent Joe to a foster care facility in Ocala. After several suicide attempts, Joe finally got a break: he was adopted by a former NYPD officer turned farmer with a long history of fostering kids who are atrisk. He took his new dad’s last name, Tuzo, and works daily to make him proud. With continual help from Goodwill’s Supported Employment program, Joe, now 26, has held a job as a porter at a mental health facility since 2014. His job coach helps him with “simple reminders and suggestions that help me stay on track,” Joe says.
Now that he has settled into a home and a career, Joe continues to grow. He got his driver’s license after four tries with the written test. He hopes his “simple smiles” and kind words help the patients he sees at work. And, he wants to eventually get the education he needs to work with kids at the center who are in foster care.
“I want to tell them ‘I’ve been where you are, and how you handle it is everything.’”

hen James Sta Ana and his mom Glesilda Chui moved to the United States from the Philippines, they didn’t
let the culture shock of a new environment slow them down.
★★★★★ While waiting for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), James finished high school and he and Glesilda stayed busy volunteering at the St. Petersburg Public Library’s main branch. There they attended seminars held by Goodwill’s Job Connection Center while acclimating themselves to their new home. When the EAD cards came, both James and his mom paid a visit to the Job Connection Center’s main location inside the Goodwill Superstore in St. Petersburg for more assistance. There they both got help with resume writing, job searching and interview techniques. “They’re very helpful,” says James, 19. “I learned how to do a correct resume, the correct words to explain who you are, and what to do and not do in an interview.” Both James and Glesilda landed jobs soon after soaking up all the information they could at the Job Connection Center. James is a cashier and works the floor at a Beall’s Outlet store, and Glesilda works two jobs, one teaching preschool and another in retail.
“I was a professional already in the Philippines,” says Glesilda. “But I still needed guidance and that’s what the Job Connection Center gave me and my son!” 10
HATS OFF TO VOLUNTEERS Lynne Burghardt was named our Volunteer of the Year for her tireless service to our BookWorks childhood literacy program. In 2017 Lynne spent 157 hours reading to 42 children and distributing 11,770 books! The Clearwater Wednesday Sorter Ladies group was named Volunteer Group of the Year in honor of the “behind-thescenes” work they do for BookWorks.
JOB-O-RAMA! More than 100 employers and job seekers participated in a community job fair hosted by Goodwill in honor of Goodwill Industries Week. Job seekers received free services – such as resume critiques – from our Job Connection Center, and were introduced to our KaleidoSCOPE program.
HURRICANE HELP When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, we pledged two weeks of donations from our Round Up program to go toward relief efforts. We were able to donate $10,707 to the American Red Cross. When Hurricane Irma hit Florida, Goodwills across the state pledged $ 300,000 in assistance to the communities we serve and provided $260,000 of goods to those impacted by the storm.

GOOD ‘BURGER AWARD
HERE WE GROW
A Good ‘Burger is an organization or individual in greater St. Pete making a positive impact in our community. In honor of a former mayor who referred to his citizens as “burgers” (as in St. Petersburgers), the awards honor Chamber members who contribute in a positive way to the community. Goodwill-Suncoast was honored to win the “Cool Companies: Large” category!
In late 2017 we opened a new St. Petersburg store that houses our innovative Job Connection Center, a community based place where people can get help finding jobs, entirely free of charge. In spring of 2018, our new 17,000-square-foot store and 200,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center opened their doors in Tampa. All are getting rave reviews!
DONORS AND DEALS
Our continuing partnerships with the Florida State Fair, The Florida Aquarium and Dinosaur World allowed us to offer great discounts and incentives to our donors.
THE BEAT GOES ON More than 1,000 hippies ran, walked or rolled along downtown Gulfport’s waterfront for our 3rd annual Hippie Dash for Peace, Love & Goodwill. A very groovy time was had by all and it was our most successful fundraiser to date!

IN A WORLD
OF LIMITED JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES,
PROJECT SEARCH DELIVERS.
Goodwill’s Community Employment Initiatives in Ocala has a surprise hit on its hands with Project SEARCH. The program provides on-the-job training for high schools students with disabilities who have one year left of school. It is a partnership that formed in 2017 between Goodwill-Suncoast, Vocational Rehabilitation, Marion County Public Schools and the Hilton Ocala.
13
“You hope for the best, but you don’t know whether or not they’ll be successful,” says Harold McNally Sr. about his son’s progress in Project SEARCH. Now, the father’s mind is at ease. “It’s refreshing to see Harold interact with people outside of his family and enjoy it.
I feel more comfortable now knowing that he’s going to be alright!” Britney Blaize is working in the Hilton restaurant. “We are absolutely floored by that outcome,” says Derek Arnold, Goodwill’s manager of community employment initiatives. “The beauty of Project SEARCH is that it affords opportunity for those that just need a bit of time to develop their employment value. With that afforded time they were able to show personal and professional growth and prove their employment value.” All the partners involved in the Marion County pilot program hope to sign on more students and employers in the coming years.
Harold McNally works in the kitchen as a steward and dishwasher.
“We’re amazed at what the kids have achieved,” says Arnold. “They’re learning new skills, teamwork, communication and problem-solving.”
Harold Jr. is one of eight students who did three rotations of on-the-job-training at the Hilton. Instead of attending classes on a high school campus, the eight students reported to work at the Hilton. Over the course of the school year the students rotated through housekeeping, kitchen and maintenance at the hotel. Harold – along with three of his classmates – did so well he was hired by the Hilton Ocala when his training was complete. Another three of the Project SEARCH class were hired by other community employers. Goodwill will provide employment support to place the final student.
Aaron Jackson (left) works in housekeeping.
