GOODWILL CHANGES EVERYTHING Nearly 115 years ago, when Dr. Edgar J. Helms pondered and prayed for a new direction in his Boston-based ministry, he arrived at the “hand-up” concept that became Goodwill Industries: Collect donated goods, process and sell them, and use the proceeds to support middle-skills training and career advancement services. Since then, the Goodwill movement has blossomed into 180 autonomous Goodwills worldwide. Dr. Helms’ remarkable vision across the decades that followed has remained true, providing millions of individuals with life-changing opportunities to experience the dignity of a paycheck and career path, the satisfaction of support for their families, and the civic pride of serving as productive members of their community. At Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA, our mission is to honor that vision from the father of social enterprise through programs ranging from employment assistance at one of our seven Job Connection career center locations to post-secondary Associate Degree or Diploma programs at one of our campuses of Helms College. These efforts provide support and a new direction for thousands of people each year. Nearly 20 years ago, when Archie Gibbs walked several miles to a Goodwill career center in downtown Macon, he also was seeking a new direction. His challenging past included childhood abuse, loss of his hearing, and years in foster care. Gibbs soon learned what countless others have discovered: Goodwill Changes Everything. Through training and mentoring he received at Goodwill, Gibbs advanced to successful and much-awarded employment, and then to operating a thriving business with his wife. By successfully overcoming his significant barriers to success and building his future on a foundation provided by Goodwill, Gibbs was honored by Goodwill International as the 2015 Graduate of the Year. Seeing Gibbs walk on stage last June in San Diego at Goodwill’s Summer Conference and describe his life’s journey to Goodwill leaders from around the world was, in itself, a life-changing event, because we not only know our Goodwill’s role in helping him succeed, but because we also see Gibbs as a single, shining representative of an exponentially larger movement started more than a century ago to eradicate poverty one career, one family and one community at a time. We invite you to learn more about Goodwill’s career assistance, education and skills-training mission that last year helped more than 23,000 individuals and found competitive employment for almost 6,000 people – many of them, like Gibbs, overcoming significant barriers or disabilities. And like Gibbs, each of these individuals from throughout our Goodwill’s 35-county Georgia and South Carolina service area has learned an enduring message: Goodwill Changes Everything. Stephen Denton, Board Chair Jim Stiff, President/CEO

OUR MISSION Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA builds lives, families and communities one career at a time by helping people develop their God-given gifts through education, work and career services.

VOLUNTEERS CHANGE EVERYTHING Volunteers are a vital part of extending Goodwill’s mission in the community. Each year, Goodwill recruits, trains and assigns hundreds of volunteers who generously give their time in support of programs, businesses and special projects that change people’s lives. From organizing donation drives to working in administrative roles, to tutoring students, volunteers make a powerful contribution to Goodwill’s capacity to serve. GForce offers opportunities for men, women and teenagers to experience the mission of Goodwill first hand, and see how Goodwill changes everything in the lives of people seeking a “hand up.”

EDUCATION CHANGES EVERYTHING Dr. Edgar Helms founded Goodwill Industries in 1902 because of his deep concern for providing what he called “a maximum of abundant living” to individuals willing to work for a share of the American Dream. His concept of soliciting donated goods, processing and repairing them through middle-skills training programs, selling those goods in retail stores and using the revenue to fund additional educational and career development enterprises forms the basis for your local Goodwill. Goodwill Industries of MIGA and the CSRA continues to build on Dr. Helms’ vision by evolving his traditional programs into relevant middle-skills education provided by Helms College. Founded in 2007, Helms College is the first Title IV and GI Bill eligible Future Contribution post-secondary school in the world operated by a Goodwill. Its campuses Opportunity Plans in Macon and Augusta provide accredited culinary education to students pursuing one-year diploma or two-year Associate Degree programs. Helms College Lake Oconee Campus Students receive hospitality education comparable to other nationally • “farm to table” agriculture eco-tourism • Conference center with day spa known institutions at nearly half the annual expense. That means students • Edgar’s Lodge restaurant with hands-on experience graduate to employment without overwhelming student loan debt. Future Helms College program areas include health sciences, industrial trades, business and technology.

In addition to functioning as Goodwill business enterprises, the components of Edgar’s Hospitality Group provide experiential learning opportunities for Helms College students in all phases of culinary and hospitality operations through Edgar’s Grille and the Snelling Center in Augusta, and Edgar’s Bistro and the Anderson Conference Center in Macon. Those opportunities are complemented by Goodwill’s two Hire Grounds Café locations. With Helms College student assistance, those operations in 2015 served nearly 125,000 guests, each of whom experience Goodwill’s hospitality while their patronage helps build Goodwill’s education mission one beverage, one meal and one event at a time.

BUSINESS AND MISSION SERVICES CHANGES EVERYTHING Contract Services are the fastest-growing segment of Goodwill’s operations, providing employment for 229 individuals and delivering $9.5 million in revenue from government and business-service contracts in 2015 – primarily through custodial and shelf-stocking services at Robins Air Force Base at Fort Gordon. In conjunction with programs from Good Vocations, those services provided 241,063 hours of employment to workers with disabilities at an average hourly wage of $10.22.

Goodwill Staffing Services, provides business and industry with trained staffers who worked 47,188 days in 2015 with total revenue of $3.8 million.

Job Training, Education and Career Development

The first stop for many individuals seeking new employment or a career upgrade is the Goodwill Job Connection , and nearly 24,000 people sought assistance at Goodwill in 2015. Most services are provided free of charge, through funding from Goodwill Staffing Services and retail sales, and include job search assistance, resume writing and soft-skills training. SM

More information at: www.goodwillworks.org/goodwillstaffing ince getting a taste of vocational education, Eddie Dean has demonstrated quite an appetite. He’s earned a diploma in heating and air systems technology, and now plans to study electrical systems in hopes of putting those skills to work on behalf of Goodwill. Giving back to Goodwill would take him full circle to 2008, when Dean’s probation officer suggested he volunteer to help with finding a job. Through assistance from the Vocational Rehabilitation program, Dean started by processing clothes in retail and soon found a paying position washing dishes at Edgar’s Bistro. Dean is especially grateful for the employment that has helped him turn his life around and provide for his everyday inspiration - his baby boy. He highly recommends Goodwill’s career services to those who likewise need a new direction. Most of all, he suggests perseverance in the face of challenges.

“Stay persistent no matter what....you can accomplish what you’re trying to do.”

Last Chance! Goodwill Outlet Stores

In 2015, faced with falling prices for “salvage” clothing unsold in Goodwill retail training stores, as salvage dealers increasingly collected donated goods on their own – often, through vaguely labeled unattended donation bins located in parking lots – Goodwill entrepreneurs launched a new, disruptive enterprise: the Last Chance! Goodwill outlet stores. Now with three locations, the Last Chance! outlet stores are completely restocked weekly with garments and other goods from regional Goodwill stores, with low prices that fall daily. The result is not only great bargains for Goodwill shoppers, but a new opportunity for Goodwill to earn more revenue for mission services as stewards of our donors’ generosity.
