Foreword More cars than ever before, a new outright fastest time on the hill, a dedicated drift arena, a bigger and better Michelin Supercar Paddock, and three days of glorious sunshine (followed by a damp Sunday, which nonetheless failed to dampen spirits). There was much to remember, and savour, at the 2019 Festival of Speed. We made some bold changes this year, and I think we can be pleased with the way the event continues to expand and develop. The atmosphere was fantastic, the new ‘live action’ Arena was well received, and the extra space for both GAS and the Supercar Paddock was a great step forward. Future Lab – our ‘cathedral of technology’ – goes from strength to strength, and shows how exciting the future looks in so many ways.
Goodwood Festival of Speed 2 019
The cars and bikes – more than 700 this year – remain the beating heart of the Festival, as do the drivers and riders. Under our 2019 theme of “Speed Kings – Motorsport’s Record Breakers”, we paid tribute to Sir Jackie Stewart on the 50th anniversary of the first of his three World Championships, and saluted the record-breaking achievements of seven-time F1 Champion Michael Schumacher. Alongside the greatest collection of his cars ever assembled, we were joined by his wife Corinna, mentors Jean Todt, Luca di Montezemelo and Ross Brawn, team mates Rubens Barrichello and Ricardo Patrese, and rivals Mika Hakkinen and Damon Hill. It was a very special moment. An orchestra played, and fireworks burst into the sky, as Aston Martin – this year’s Central Feature partner – celebrated 70 years since first racing at Goodwood Motor Circuit, and 60 years since winning the World Sports Car Championship at Goodwood. An awe-inspiring collection of Bentleys came together for their centenary, and Mercedes-Benz brought their Silver Arrows to mark an incredible 125 years in motorsport. Brawn GP was back, ten years after its amazing championship-winning debut season, and current F1 stars Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Alexander Albon, Antonio Giovinazzi and George Russell were crowd favourites as always. The drifters filled a hugely popular new arena with tyre smoke, a bigger supercar paddock presented the world’s fastest road cars while, up in the forest, we were joined by World Rally Champions Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Juha Kankkunen, Miki Biasion, Petter Solberg and Sebastian Ogier, to celebrate 40 years of the WRC. On the hill the Solbergs – father Petter and son Oliver – stole the show in a thrilling shootout which, as many had predicted, was won in record time by Romain Dumas in Volkswagen’s mighty I.D R. For sheer bravado, the GAS arena never fails to amaze, with the world’s finest stunt riders defying the laws of gravity. For those in search of peace and tranquility there was the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’, that this year brought us beautiful Voisins, stylish Zagatos, glorious Bugattis and many more priceless rarities from around the world. I am grateful, as ever, to all our loyal and enthusiastic partners, without whom none of this would be possible, and I look forward to working with you all next summer.
