QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL 2 019
Foreword The 2019 Qatar Goodwood Festival was one that will live long in the memory, with glorious summer sunshine (after a rather blustery start!) and over 100,000 racegoers in attendance. Goodwood’s first runners from Japan and America added to the top-class horseracing, drawing attention from around the world throughout the week and beyond. Fayez was the first winner of the week, taking the Unibet Handicap under Danny Tudhope before the much-anticipated Qatar Goodwood Cup took centre stage. It was the popular Stradivarius who won the race claiming a historic third consecutive Goodwood Cup. Later in the afternoon, trainer John Gallagher saddled Green Power to win the Chelsea Barracks Handicap when he stayed on strongly inside the final furlong. On Wednesday, Timoshenko recorded a popular sixth successive victory for Middleham Park Racing in The Unibet Goodwood Handicap Stakes, before the Mark Johnson trained Sir Ron Priestley won the Unibet Handicap. Yorkshire trainer John Quinn claimed the Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes with the consistent Liberty Beach who showed an impressive turn of foot before the showpiece of the day. Too Darn Hot proved a popular victor when landing his third Group 1 in The Qatar Sussex Stakes under Frankie Dettori for Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber. To close the card, The New & Lingwood Handicap Stakes went the way of Dirty Rascal who narrowly prevailed in a pulsating finish. Ladies’ day kicked off with the Magnolia Cup, a charity race for inspirational women that has become an integral part of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Khadijah Mellah’s ground-breaking victory in the race reached over a billion people worldwide. John Gosden claimed The Unibet Handicap with Forest Of Dean, while Deirdre’s success in the Qatar Nassau Stakes provided Japan with their first Group 1 success in Great Britain for two decades. Charlie Hills went on to have a successful week at the Sussex track following Vividly’s victory in The Markel Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. He won the feature race on Friday when the brilliant Battaash wrote his name into the history books by winning a third consecutive King George Qatar Stakes, in breath-taking fashion. The supporting card on Friday saw the gutsy Duke Of Hazzard win the The Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes under PJ McDonald, who recorded his fourth victory of the week and subsequently went on to take the Racing TV leading jockey award. The Unibet Golden Mile was won by Beat Le Bon before Homespin won The Unibet Nursery Handicap Stakes. Saturday saw Enbihaar secure one of the most impressive wins of the week in the Qatar Lille Langtry Stakes. Jockey Jim Crawley followed up with a quickfire double when Khaadem won The Unibet Stewards’ Cup, the much-anticipated annual Calvary charge. This year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival thrilled all those who attended, as well as those who watched across the globe. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to creating more unique memories in 2020.
The Duke of Richmond & Gordon
“Everything about Goodwood is so beautiful, British, heartfelt and it’s all done with heart and soul.” TOM KERRIDGE, MICHELIN STAR CHEF
2019 With five days of thrilling action set against the magnificent backdrop of the rolling Sussex countryside, The Qatar Goodwood Festival – popularly known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – is an undoubted highlight of the flat-racing season.
“Goodwood is one of my favourite racecourses to present on ITV. Not only is it the most beautiful racecourse on the planet but it is also the stage for some of the world’s best racing. Add to that superb hospitality, with The Duke of Richmond setting the tone, and you have a potent mixture for a brilliant day at the races.” Ed Chamberlin, Presenter ITV Racing

“At an early stage in my career we latched onto the great opportunities here at Goodwood, we really enjoy it, the owners really enjoy it, and we have some overseas owners here this week and they are really enjoying it. There is no better place to come to advertise British racing – its superb.” MARK JOHNSTON, LEADING RACEHORSE TRAINER
THE MARKEL INSUR ANCE MOLECOMB STAKES (Class 1, Group
3)
Tu e s d a y 3 1 J u l y 2 0 1 9 The Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes is named after part of the Goodwood Estate and for nearly half of the 20th century the race was restricted to fillies. The Maktoum family celebrated a first-ever Group victory when Hatta won the 1977 renewal for Arundel trainer John Dunlop, while the brilliant Marwell won the last fillies-only race in 1980. Fillies have continued to do well, with 14 successful since 1981, including Hoh Magic who added the G1 Prix Morny in 1994 and Carmine Lake, victorious in 1996 before defeating the best five-furlong sprinters in Europe in the 1997 Prix de l’Abbaye. Enticing triumphed in 2006 and returned to the Glorious Goodwood winner’s enclosure in the 2008 King George Stakes over the same trip, while another speedy filly, Fleeting Spirit, won in 2007 and then took the 2009 G1 Darley July Cup. Among high-class colts to have triumphed was Precocious, who prevailed in 1983 and went on to win the G2 Gimcrack Stakes at York in an unbeaten campaign. Irish-trained horses have been successful six times, with the latest winning raider being the David Wachman-trained Requinto in 2011. Charlie Hills sent out Cotai Glory to win in 2014 in a new two-year-old course record time of 57.30s. Trainer Mark Johnston saddled a first Molecomb Stakes winner in 2016 with Yalta who significantly bettered the course record when passing the post in 57.14s. Another North Yorkshire handler, Karl Buke, landed the 2017 renewal with Havana Grey, The incomparable Lester Piggott gained eight victories in the Molecomb Stakes during his brilliant riding career – the first in 1957 on Abelia and the final one with Precocious in 1983. The shortest-priced winning favourite was 1-8 chance Diableretta in 1949. At the other end of the odds’ spectrum, Hotbee triumphed at 100-1 in 1985. In 2018, Rumble Inthejungle landed the race for Richard Spencer, while in 2019 Liberty Beach rewarded favourite backers with a win for John Quinn and Jason Hart.

course cha r act e r istics The Goodwood Stakes Course of 2m 5f starts below the winning post and, running the reverse way of the course, turns left after about 4f and returns to the straight 5f run-in by the top bend. The Cup Course is the last 2m, the Bentinck Course the last 1m 6f and the Gratwicke Course the last 1m of the Stakes Course. The 1m 3f distance is a new one introduced this year. The Craven Course is 1m 1f 192y, starting in almost the same spot as the Gratwicke Course but running in the reverse direction and returning to the 5f run-in by the top bend. The 1m 1f course, though starting at almost the same point, follows the lower bend till joining the straight. The Old Mile and 7f Courses start on the Stakes Course and join the 5f courses on the lower bend. The 5f and 6f (Stewards’ Cup) courses are dead straight, the first furlong of the latter being uphill and then slightly undulating to the finish. The sharp bends and downhill gradients suit the handy, well-balanced, neat actioned sort and are against the big long-striding horse. The course benefits from an artificial watering system. The one mile three furlong starts at the same point as the one mile four furlongs but enters the straight via the lower bend.
