CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Tonight we welcome the officials, players and supporters from Shildon for this EBAC Northern League first division fixture. We hope our visitors enjoy their short stay her in North Shields before the journey back home. Well, as usual, we made our annual first round exit from the FA Cup as we threw away a two goal lead against Guisborough, when it was easier to hang on and win the first match. Then, in the replay, we played badly and duly lost near the end. Most disappointing after the battling performance against Whickham. Thankfully, we redeemed the situation somewhat with a hard fought draw away at West Auckland on Saturday. We had the chances to have won the game, particularly with a great diving effort from Gareth Bainbridge that just failed to connect. Even at this early stage, the Northern League is showing what a hard competition it is. There are no easy games in this division and every point has to be fought for over the entire 90 minutes of every game. We are still without both defenders Jack Donnison and Jordan Summerly; two class players who could walk into most teams in the league

Never mind, their replacements have settled in well and are proving to be excellent signings for the squad. Jack as we know has started a new job but Jordan has a knee injury that is keeping him on the sidelines at the moment. I understand a visit to see a specialist is on the cards for him.

Back to tonight and another tough game is at hand with our visitors Shildon. They have started the season well, as usual, so we will need to be at our very best. Let's hope the players can carry on from Saturday and get the win we need, Up the Robins.

Alan Matthews

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone for our second home league game of the season. Hopefully, it can as entertaining as the opener against Whickham. Tonight’s opponents Shildon have made a great start in the league and have scored an incredible 13 goals in their first two matches. We have had three very tough games so far against three sides who will almost certainly be up there come April. We have shown quality, resilience and tremendous work rate so far and have become a difficult side to beat. The challenge now is to get on a good run and make sure we are around the top end after 10 games because that will lay the foundation for the rest of the season. It’s not going to be easy as our next few league games are again versus fancied sides this year but we have a good spirit, in the dressing room, and we are confident that we can get a good haul of points. The FA Cup was very disappointing but the replay was a tight affair and I felt we were well on top when they broke away and scored. We needed a response and the players showed their bottle on Saturday at such a tough place in West Auckland. Having made four changes, I was delighted with the overall performance and non more so than 18 year old debutant Paul Van-Zandvliet who was outstanding up until his groin injury forced him off. Its fantastic to see a North Shields lad running his heart out for his local club. Keep getting behind the team because a lot of challenges have been thrown at us and with all the big money around in the NL these days, its not straightforward building a team, however, seeing local talent come through restores the faith. Enjoy the game,

Marc Nash

An early Kyle Patton goal helped a muchchanged Shields side to a deserved point against West Auckland Town. The young winger, one of Wednesday’s squad to retain his place in the team, was on hand in the 19th minute to convert at the far post, with both teams testing each other early on. The hosts levelled just before the break when Adam Burnicle finished off a well-worked move which saw Liam Hegarty and Amar Purewal have a hand in the play. And despite Gareth Bainbridge and Scott McCarthy testing the West Auckland keeper in the second period, the hosts managed to hold the Robins to a draw. After Wednesday’s disappointing defeat to Guisborough Town in the FA Cup, the visitors were looking to bounce back straight away. They got off to a good start and in the 10th minute after a high ball from McCarthy found Bainbridge in space, only for the forward to lose his footing before the ball was eventually cleared to safety.

West Auckland, who were still looking for their first three points of the season, were spurred into action by this effort and only one minute later, Nathan Fisher was denied by a brilliant double save from Greg Purvis before centre back Wayne Buchanan thumped the ball away from the Robins goal. In the 19th minute, the Robins were rewarded for their good start when the ball was squared to Patton inside the box, following a break on goal by Adam Forster, with the young winger finishing smartly past Tom Flynn to give Shields the lead. West Auckland were rocked and only two minutes later, Paul Van Zandvliet was only inches away from scoring on his debut for the club, following a pin point cross from Chris McDonald. Four minutes later, Bainbridge had a golden chance to double the advantage when he connected with a defence splitting ball from McCarthy, only to see his header drift agonizingly wide.

The hosts were really riding their luck at times and on the stroke of the 34 minutes, Flynn came off his line to claim the ball, only for Van Zandvliet to disposes him. Patton had a great chance on the rebound to double the lead but could only fire wide. Five minutes before the break, West Auckland were wondering how they hadn’t levelled the game up. After Burnicle rattled the crossbar with a close -range shot, Fisher’s follow up effort was superbly saved by Purvis before the home captain blazed the ball over. However, two minutes before the break, the hosts were level when some good play between Liam Hegarty and Amar Purewal allowed Burnicle enough time to tap in from close range. The Robins began the second half brightly and in the 52nd minute, Gary Ormston, who had returned to the starting line-up, had a decent chance on goal but could only lift the ball over the crossbar. West Auckland were creating more chances this half, with both Joe Hillerby and Alex Francis putting pressure on the Robins goal. However, it was Shields who came closest to scoring a second when Bainbridge was released through on goal in the 60th minute, only to see his shot well saved by the onrushing Flynn. The hosts were struggling to deal with the Robins’ width and in the 72nd minute, brilliant play between fullback Nick Cassidy and winger McCarthy found Patton once again, but the young winger’s shot was deflected away from goal. As impressive as the Robins were going forward, their defensive work rate was just as good and in the 74th minute, a spectacular diving save from Purvis prevented Purewal from giving West Auckland the lead against the run of play. This proved to be last real effort on goal as both sides were forced to settle for a point.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

SHILDON CLUB HISTORY FORMED in 1890 as Shildon Town, the Railwaymen joined the Auckland and District League two years later and in 1894 merged with the Rangers and Heroes to become Shildon United. In 1900, the club played in the new Northern League Division Two but folded that season due to financial problems – as did the Second Division. A re-formed club joined the Northern League in 1903 to replace Stockton St John’s. In 1907, Shildon joined the semiprofessional ranks of the North Eastern League, finishing second in season 1932/33. Before WWII the club won four successive Northern League Division One titles; a record that stood until overhauled by Blyth in 1984. In 1937 the team was unbeaten on their march to the title with Jack Downing firing in a record 61 league and cup goals. A replay win at York City in 1927/28 saw the club reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time. In the first round they have also played Brentford, Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City, Scunthorpe United and Oldham Athletic three times. The last time the club reached the first round was in 2003/04, losing out 7-2 against Notts County. The club also reached the second round, in 1936/37 against Dartford. The Dean Street turnstiles and distinctive grandstand were erected in 1923. A £45,000 grant saw new dressing rooms and a social club built beneath the stand 60 years later. Shildon won the Second Division championship in 2001/02, scoring 135 goals and finished runners-up in two cup competitions. The following season they won the Northern League Challenge Cup with a 3-2 golden goal victory over Billingham Synthonia at Feethams. Tragedy struck the club in February 2004 when 26-year-old player, Lee Hainsworth was killed in a road accident on his way to training. He had been with the club for six years. The Brown Street stand was renamed in his memory. Bill Aisbitt, a lifelong stalwart at the club, died in June 2003 and the boardroom was named in his honour after over 50 years loyal service. At the end of the 2004 season, the Railwaymen came under serious threat through financial difficulties when the former chairman severed all ties with the club. At the end of the season all the players and the manager left the club, leaving it crippled. But during the close season, the club appointed a new chairman, Brian Burn who ensured its survival. The club survived a relegation scare and since then has gone from strength to strength. In 2012-13, the club reached two cup semi-finals. A depleted side lost in the Durham Challenge Cup to Spennymoor Town. The match brought an end to the playing career of midfielder Chris Hughes after he suffered a knee injury. And there was more heartbreak as the side narrowly missed a dream day out at Wembley after losing their two-legged FA Vase semi-final to a late extra-time goal in the second leg at home. In season 2013-14, the management team further strengthened the playing squad, bring in several experienced players in a determination to bring silverware back to Dean Street for the first time. The investment paid off with the club narrowly missing out on the league title, remaining competitive until the final weeks of the season. But the club were able to avenge the semi-final defeat of the previous season when they faced Spennymoor Town in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup. On an historic Good Friday, Shildon striker, Billy Greulich-Smith added a new chapter to the club’s history books with two late goals – the winner in added time at the end of the 90 minutes – to overcome their local rivals by two goals to one. After missing out on the Northern League Championship in the 2014-15 season by one point, the team re-grouped and won the Northern League Cup and became Champions of the Northern League the following season. Following the sudden departure of the Management Team, Chairman David Dent appointed Daniel Moore in January 2017 and Moore guided us to 3rd position in the League and a Durham Challenge Cup Semi-Final. The first piece of silverware came at the start of the 2018/19 season with a 4-1 Penalty victory against Dunston UTS. After an indifferent first half of the 2018/19 season the Club appointed ex York City Manager, Martin Gray as Sporting Director and Harry Dunn as a Head of Recruitment to support Daniel Moore. The changes has had the desired effect with the Club being one of the form sides in the League and has seen the Club reach the Final of the Durham Challenge Cup following a victory at Hartlepool United in the semi final.
