CHAIRMAN’S CORNER So it's here again. Another gruelling season gets under way. All the preparation, all the wheeling and dealing and all the begging to sponsors can come to fruition. Will it be worth it, who knows. One things for sure, it's the start of almost 40 weeks of sheer hard graft for every committee man or woman with very little thanks and nothing left in their pockets to show for it. No matter which club they are with. Tonight, we welcome Whickham F.C. to The Daren Persson Stadium for our first home game of this new season. We hope they enjoy their short stay here before the journey back home.
Much has happened during the close season here at Shields, mostly on the playing side where we have lost several players to Blyth Spartans. Their manager did a bunk to Darlington F.C. and took most of his playing staff with him. Hence their need to recruit a new management team and players. Lee Clark was signed up and they promptly plundered clubs and took players left, right, and centre. This left ourselves with the monumental task of having to replace those that jumped ship. Marc and Woody have done their level best to bring new lads in and I bid them all a very warm welcome to the Morgue. I would also thank those players who stayed loyal and hope that together we can give our supporters something to cheer over the coming months.
Tonight's visitors have themselves been busy in the transfer market with several new faces in their line up with big name signings in their ranks. Those that were there at Sunderland RCA on Saturday will know we were very harshly treated by a totally incompetent referee. I sometimes wonder if it's all really worth it. Never mind and back to tonight's game. Let's hope we can get off to a winning start. Enjoy the game and as usual. Up the Robins.
Alan Matthews
MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good Evening as we welcome our first visitors of the new season and off the back of some major signings, Whickham will be a very tough test indeed. Tonight’s opponents have brought in the likes of Bartlett, Newton and Finnigan which has elevated them into favourites for promotion. They got off the mark on Saturday with a fine result but we will going all out to peg them back tonight. We have had a tricky summer again in regards to keeping stability within the squad. We have found it tough competing for players because of the range in budgets but we believe the players we have signed have added experience, hunger and some with a point to prove so we must harness everything and move forward as a group. We had six debuts on Saturday and still Scott McCarthy to make his which has proved football is everchanging and it wasn’t what I expected but, all the same, we are delighted with the way the players are applying themselves so far. We lost Spooner and Nearney to Blyth Spartans as well as the loss of skipper Kev Hughes (retirement) and Jack Donnison (work). Then injuries to Jordan Summerly and Gary Day have caused more headaches but I am delighted Chris McDonald is now fully fit and that we managed to secure Connor Campbell back from his very successful loan spell last season. We basically opened up the new season with a completely fresh back four so it will take time to gel and to learn each others game. I must say, the players were terrific in Saturdays game at RCA and we deserved at least a point but came away with nothing, scant reward for the brilliant work rate and effort the players put in. I just hope some of those decisions even themselves out during the course of the season because we literally got nothing. However, its another game at the start of a very long season and we are determined to perform in these back to back home matches. Enjoy the game,
Marc Nash

Two second half goals from Dylan Elliott denied visitors a deserved share of the spoils as RCA defeated North Shields 2-1. The Robins were by far the more dominant in the first half, with efforts from Ryan Carr and Rhys Williams were denied by RCA keeper Rob Dean. Carr wasn’t to be denied in the second half as his towering header looped over Dean to give Shields the lead. However, a dubious penalty and a close-range effort from Elliott inflicted opening day defeat on the Robins. Fielding as many as six debutants, the visitors begun brightly when after six minutes, a ball from Ben Christensen found Kyle Patton before the electric wingers cross was cleared to safety. Three minutes later, the impressive Patton was once again at the centre of the action when he was bundled over in the box, with referee Chatten waving it away. The hosts were struggling to deal with the intensity on offer from Shields and in the 12th minute, a dangerous freekick from Paul Robinson found Carr in the box, only for his effort to draw an excellent save from the keeper down low. Connor Campbell, returning to the club after a season with Heaton Stannington, broke free of the RCA defence after 16 minutes but once again, Dean was equal to the effort. With Jordan Summerly side-lined, Chris McDonald started at left back and the defender almost provided Campbell with an excellent chance to score. However, his cross was a little too strong to reach. After being denied a penalty early on, the North Shields bench were up in arms in the 22nd minute when another strong claim for a penalty was waved away, despite Campbell being felled in the area. This injustice seemed to galvanise the visitors, with Paul Robinson trying his luck from range in the 30th minute, only for the ball to sail wide.
Robinson’s set pieces were giving RCA numerous headaches and in the 35th minute, a fantastic corner found debutant Williams six yards out from goal, with the ball being cleared off the line. Michael Charlton had RCA’s first real effort of note in the 37th minute when he swung wildly at the ball, only to find Greg Purvis alert to the danger. With only five minutes before the break, the Robins had their third penalty claim denied by the referee when Patton was clumsily bundled over inside the box. Despite strong appeals from the players and fans, the referee simply wasn’t interested. The Robins were rewarded for their dominance in the second half when, in the 61st minute, Carr rose highest to connect with a dangerous delivery from McDonald, leaving Dean clawing at thin air as the ball looped into the back of the net. After having three penalty claims denied by the ref, the Robins bench was infuriated when RCA were awarded a soft penalty in the 63rd minute. Substitute Elliott stepped up to send the ball down the middle to level the score. Despite the injustice, the Robins did not lose their focus and only four minutes later, Patton fed Campbell with a sublime cross but Dean rushed off his line to claim the ball. After Dean once again denied the Robins following a save from Adam Forster’s shot, RCA took the lead for the first time in the 71st minute. After some scrappy play, Elliott managed to work some space before finishing past Purvis. RCA were now sensing a chance to put the game to bed and on the stroke of 79 minutes, only some fantastic defending from McDonald denied the hosts another chance on goal. Despite a late flurry of chances for the Robins as they tried to rescue a point, the RCA defence managed to hold on to inflict an opening day defeat on North Shields.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS Featuring Wilf Keilty
Here we are at the start of another season and I’m delighted to be sponsoring todays Robins man of the match. It’s a fitting fixture for me to be sponsoring the award given that it sees my two favourite Northern League clubs facing off against each other so early in the campaign. I played quite a lot of games for both clubs enjoying a fair share of cup wins, promotions and league championships along the way. Of course my relationship with North Shields became much more enduring after I joined them from Whickham back in the mid-eighties as I also went on to be player- coach, assistant and manager for the Robins. Representing the Robins in four separate decades from the eighties in one capacity or another is something I’m very proud of, so I hope Whickham players and officials will understand that I won’t be sitting on the fence for today’s game. I wish them all the best for a great season but only after today! It’s also a wonderful coincidence that both my favourite clubs have won the FA Vase at Wembley. I don’t think destiny had me earmarked to actually play on the hallowed turf myself. I did all of pre- season with Whickham as a kid in 80-81 and probably wouldn’t have made the first team but a serious car crash on the first week of the season put paid to me for over a year! However we were at it again in 1984 but had to endure the agony of losing our semi-final home leg after a creditable draw away to Stansted in the first leg. Mind you we weren’t helped by the refereeing of one Trelford Mills (2 sent off and 7 booked in the home leg). He was not a popular man on Tyneside and negatively influenced Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United in similar fashion earlier that season if my memory serves me correctly! It was fantastic to see the Robins lift the Vase at Wembley in 2015 and I want to take this opportunity to thank the club officials, supporters, players and of course Fents, Brian and Bowsa for a great weekend at Wembley which in some ways helped fill a blank on my playing CV. To complete my trip down memory lane I’ve singled out what I think were the two greatest games I was involved in, one from each club. For Whickham it was our 0-1 away win at Leytonstone in the 1984 Vase quarter final, I’ve never been so exhausted and battered physically on a football pitch! For North Shields the memory is not as a player but as management team member for our Senior Cup Final win at St James Park when we beat Blyth Spartans 4-3 in 2016. That game had everything including high quality, dramatic goals from three of our existing players Gaz Bainbridge, Gary Ormston and Ryan Carr. Thanks lads that filled in another CV gap, a winners medal at St James to top my runners up medal in 1989 when we lost to a “proper” Newcastle United XI. None of that under 21 nonsense them days! Up the Robins! Up the Laing Jacks (from next week)!

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

WHICKHAM AFC CLUB HISTORY It all began back in 1944 when the club was formed under the name of Axwell Park Colliery Welfare, although they were colloquially termed the Home Guard Team. Early on, the side played in the Derwent Valley League, before switching to the Northern Combination and, in 1974, to the Wearside League. Whickham enjoyed quite a degree of success at this level before joining the Northern League Second Division in 1988.Having reached the Semi Final of the FA Vase in 1978-79 losing to Almondsbury Greenway, it was in 1981 that Whickham had their finest hour. The club going all the way to the Twin Towers in the final of the FA Vase, after a titanic struggle to overcome Windsor Eton in the semi Final. An estimated 5,000 fans followed Whickham to Wembley. Willenhall FC from the Midlands awaited on the big day. In a gripping Final, Whickham came back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 at full time with goals from Alan Scott and Ronnie Williamson taking the game into Extra-time. Ecstasy followed when Billy Cawthra broke way to win it 3-2 to send the Vase back up to Tyneside. This success leaves us as the last North East based club to win a National Final at the old Wembley Stadium which is now rebuilt, the club’s little piece of History. Whickham again nearly reached Wembley in 1983-84 falling short in the Semifinal in controversial fashion. The second-leg tie at home to Stansted saw two Whickham players sent off in a badtempered affair. After just one season in the Second Division under the management of Billy Hodgson the club gained promotion for the first time into the First Division in 1988-89 and spent three seasons there before being relegated in 19991-92. Another promotion came in 19994-95 when they won the Second Division. A further two seasons was spent in the First Division before another relegation in 1996-97 back into the Second Division, where they’ve remained until 2018. After Billy’s reign the club struggled to find its identity and with funds tight struggled to compete and although three or four managers took over, the club found itself in a perilous position 1999-00 when without the intervention of Tony Ainley the club was in grave danger of going out of business. Tony’s reign started with no players and no money and although his first two seasons were really about survival, the club was once again safely settled in the Northern League. Over the next three or four years the club undertook major changes and the hard work was rewarded when after a fantastic run defeating four First Division sides on the way, the club found itself in the final of the Prestigious Durham Challenge Cup and after being second best for long spells against a very good Billingham Synthonia side, two late goals from Kenny Boyle and Ian Robson snatched Whickham an amazing victory. The Following season the followed the capture of the DCC by winning the newly named Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup (2nd Division Cup) by defeating Penrith in an exciting Penalty Shoot-out. In our defence of the DCC also in that season, we also reached the Semi Final of the DCC in our defence of that Trophy before losing a close game away at Chester le Street. After Tony decided to relinquish the managerial post the club had a lot of chopping and changing but in 2013 Robin Falcus was appointed manager. The 2012-13 season was a tough learning curve for Robin and Kris Holmes his assistant, but the club decided to stick with a plan. Anyone that knows Robin can see his passion and hunger to get the best of the players and club and the decision to stick has grown to be a great one. Robin began to build, and things took aim. The Lang Jacks finished 6th (the highest in six years) in 2017 after a rollercoaster season and in the following season, things turned to magic. The aim was to Improve on the previous season and that was well and truly smashed. In a tough competitive league where many other clubs had more resources, Robin managed to build a young and hungry side which defied the odds and were a surprise package, finishing third in the league thanks on a dramatic last day of the season. Third was enough for the club to secure promotion into Division One for the first time in 21 years. The club’s past may be chequered and not without success, but Whickham FC has been on this roller-coaster. There’s been plenty difficulties, but the people behind the club have always came together for the love of the beautiful game. In their first season back in Northern League Division One, it was a difficult campaign for the Lang Jacks, who finished second-bottom, but they still remained in the league and have built a strong squad ahead of the 2019-20 season. With the likes of former York City ‘keeper Adam Bartlett, and former South Shields forward Carl Finnigan, on board, along with a whole host of other talented players, everyone at the club is excited to see what will happen.
WHICKHAM SQUAD 2019/20
Adam Bartlett (GK)
Ryan Lumsden (GK)
Kieran Galbraith (DF)
Lewis Gibbons (DF)
Bartlett was unveiled as the first signing of the summer for Whickham. The goalkeeper was with the Newcastle United Academy before going on to make a name for himself, in professional and non- league football, with the likes of Blyth Spartans, Hereford United, Gateshead and, more recently, York City.
Ryan was the second goalkeeper to arrive through the doors at The First Mortgage Glebe this summer. The young shot-stopper is an exciting player, who will provide competition after signing from Gateshead.
Regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Northern League, Kieran was another summer addition, arriving from Division One rivals, Bishop Auckland. The defender is a leader at the back and is excellent both in the air and also in the tackle.
Lewis is a versatile player, who also arrived at The First Mortgage Glebe from Bishop Auckland. He can play either in defence, as a defensive midfielder or controlling the game in the middle of the park and he is a great addition.
Matthew Grieve (DF)
Sam Hedley (DF)
Tom Howard (DF)
Clark Kay (DF)
Another former Newcastle United Academy player in the squad, Matty is solid at the back and is entering his second season with Whickham. The centre-back was formerly with Stockport County – on loan – Morpeth Town, Ashington and Celtic Nation.
Sam is another player, who can play anywhere across the back line and do an excellent job for the team. The defender is one of the longest-serving players in the squad this season and will be determined to improve on last season’s finish in the league.
The former Sunderland youngster has proved to be an excellent addition and has really impressed since arriving in the summer. The full-back can get forward with ease, but is also a fantastic defender and will be one to watch this season.
Clark arrived from Consett last season and made the full-back position his own in his first season at The First Mortgage Glebe. The defender is a modern-day fullback, who enjoys getting forward and joining in the attacks at every opportunity, but is also a solid defender too.
Stephen Little (DF)
Dale Burrell (MF)
Chad Collins (MF)
Conor Newton (MF)
Stephen was another player to arrive from Division One rivals Consett last season. The veteran Northern League defender has experience in abundance and will provide a level head at the back after his time with the likes of West Allotment Celtic, Bedlington Terriers and Blyth AFC.
A playmaker in the middle of the park, Dale is now entering his second season with the club and will be a real leader in the middle of the park. The midfielder enjoys the ball at his feet and also chips in with goals at crucial times.
Chad arrived back at the club towards the back end of preseason and showed his quality from the outset. The midfielder is another player, who enjoys having the ball at his feet and getting forward, while also starting attacks – also contributing assists and goals in the process.
The signing of Conor, this summer, showed the club’s intent for this season and beyond. The midfielder is vastly experienced and signed for Whickham after his release from Hartlepool United. The former Newcastle United Academy player has also been with St. Mirren, Rotherham United and Cambridge United.
Kyle Oliver (MF) Kyle signed for the club from Seaham Red Star last season, but, prior to that, he was with Blyth AFC, who won the Northern League Division Two title in the 2017-18 season. The midfielder is another playmaker in the team, but is versatile and can also do a job for the team in defence.
Andrew Bulford (F) A veteran Northern League striker, who also has an FA Vase winners medal to his name. Bully was the man-of-the-match for Dunston UTS at Wembley after scoring a brace to see them over the line to clinch the silverware. Despite moving in to his new role as assistant manager, he will continue to do a job up front, leading the line and doing what he does best, scoring goals.
Matthew Pattison (MF)
Ross Peareth (MF)
Tom Scothern (MF)
Kyle signed for the club from Seaham Red Star last season, but, prior to that, he was with Blyth AFC, who won the Northern League Division Two title in the 2017-18 season. The midfielder is another playmaker in the team, but is versatile and can also do a job for the team in defence.
Ross is the captain of Whickham and leads by example in the middle of the park. The midfielder is a tough-tackler and enjoys picking passes out and starting attacks for his team. Peareth is also the longest-serving player at the club.
Tom is the second player to arrive at the club from Sunderland’s Academy, where he made 16 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League. After impressing management during pre-season, Scothern will be hoping to make a real impact for Whickham this season.
Max Cowburn (F)
Carl Finnigan (F)
Lee McAndrew (F)
The youngster arrived from South Shields last season and is a real threat down the wing. Max is continuing to stamp his mark on the team with some fine performances and he will continue contributing scoring goals and creating them too.
Another marquee signing for Whickham, Carl arrived at the club in the summer from South Shields, where he, just about, won everything there was to win, including four trophies in one season. In the FA Vase final, in 2017, he scored the first goal of the game at Wembley as Shields won 4-0 to lift the silverware. The forward can lead the line or play just behind the striker, but is still effective in both roles as he knows where the back net is.
Lee will prove to be a real asset for Whickham this season. After arriving at the club from Ashington, where he spent the last four years, he has high hopes this season. The former FA Vase winner is like lightning down the wing and causes opposition defenders nightmares with his trickery.
Kelvin Thear (F) Kelvin is another winger, who will provide real pace and threat down, both, the right and the left flanks. The youngster signed for the club from neighbours Dunston UTS and is now heading into his second season with the Lang Jacks.
MANAGEMENT TEAM Robin Falcus (M)
Andrew Bulford (ASM)
Robin has been a revelation since taking over the reins at the club and in 2018, he guided the Lang Jacks to promotion to Division One. Anyone that knows Robin can see his passion and hunger to get the best of the players and club .
Andrew steps up as the Lang Jacks’ new assistant manager this season. He will be sharing his new coaching responsibilities with his current work as a player.
