CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Today we welcome the officials, players and supporters from Whitley Bay for this festive Boxing Day encounter here at The Daren Persson Stadium. We trust that all concerned enjoy their day.

Last Wednesday we did manage to get our game against Thornaby under way despite the terrible weather and we did manage to win. We did however pay the price with Friday's game against Ryhope C.W. having to be called off due to the pitch being waterlogged. Hopefully today will go ahead. It was great to see Steven Bell the Thornaby manager. Some of you may recall he played a major part in our successful Wearside team when Barry Sill was manager. This is the first meeting between the sides this season and despite that loss at Shildon we did bounce back mid week. It's our turn to host this Christmas fixture with the return being in April I believe. I have taken note of some of the comments on Non League Zone about some clubs blatantly inflating their gate attendances. Unfortunately I have to agree with some of these comments. We have witnessed this practice this season. I presume it's got something to do with the rumours that if only three clubs are promoted at the end of the season and vacancies are still available in the higher league, then other clubs may be cherry picked based on attendances and

infrastructure. Whatever happens we will not be doing that here at Shields, Back to today and the game at hand. This fixture is normally our biggest gate of the season so let's hope the tradition continue and there's a great atmosphere inside the ground. Whatever happens enjoy the game and on behalf of the club I would like to wish all our supporters a very merry Christmas. Up the Robins.

Alan Matthews

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good Morning and a Merry Xmas to both sets of supporters, staff and committees. We welcome Whitley Bay for this Boxing Day fixture and it should be a cracking game between two sides in excellent form.

Its always a special occasion with a little extra spice as both squads are littered with players who have represented both clubs, not to mention myself and Woody who both played then later I spent eight years at Whitley Bay on the staff. I still speak to a lot of the fans and I’ve got a lot of respect for some of the people behind the scenes. However, sentiments will be set aside as we aim to improve our derby record further, having completed the league double last season without conceding a goal. Our run of just one defeat in 13 games stretches back to September and we are aiming to stay in the top 5 at the turn of the year. I was delighted to bounce back from the Shildon loss with a win last midweek against Thornaby which was played in atrocious conditions but we have been very good at home this season so I was confident we would bounce back. Having added Callum Patton (for a month) and Callum Smith, the squad has a stronger look about it and we have competition in all areas which should be able to see us through as we aim for one of the promotion slots available. I can assure fans as we head into the New Year that we are always looking to improve so we wont be resting until we achieve our goals. Up The Robins!

DIVISION ONE ROUND UP After a shaky start to their season, West Auckland Town finally got going and now trending in the right direction, something which we all saw coming. A thumping 6-0 home win over strugglers Penrith has seen Gary Forrest’s men rise to ninth in the Division One table, two places below near rivals Bishop Auckland but with two games in hand. The recent addition of Craig Spooner, someone who North Shields fans will know very well, gives them the extra reinforcement that any promotion chasing side will desperately need. The Seahorses have hit something of a run of form, with Saturday’s 7-1 thrashing of Seaham Red Star giving them their third win on the bounce. What is even more impressive is how they have utilised their younger players, with Michael Colquhoun and newly signed Marcus Giles both scoring against the lowly Star. A tricky run of fixtures against North Shields, Newcastle Benfield and Guisborough now awaits Nathan Haslam’s men but if they can come through this period unscathed, it really sets them up well for next season. Heading into Saturday’s game against red-hot Shildon, not many people outside of Bishop Auckland thought they would come away with all three points. However, Kyle Morris’ winner in injury time handed Shildon their first defeat in the league since October 19. The only thing that has cost Bishop Auckland this season is their inconsistency, meaning that for the rest of the season, if they are to hope for a late promotion challenge, they are having to rely on results elsewhere. Not the most ideal of situations for a team that finished third last season. Since the 16th November, when Thornaby beat Northallerton Town, it seemed that last seasons’ Division Two runners up had finally settled in their new league. However, since then, they have suffered back to back defeats to Seaham Red Star, Whickham, Newton Aycliffe, North Shields and now Guisborough Town. What is even more concerning is that Adam Preston’s goals have seemingly dried up and when your top goalscorer goes through a bit of a dry spell, it never makes things any easier, especially near the bottom of the league.

A recent run of good form had seen Seaham Red Star climb further away from the danger zone, however, a defeat against Newcastle Benfield had some questioning if Seaham had what it takes to maintain their recent run of form. Even more questions will be asked now as a heavy 7-1 away defeat to Whitley Bay really highlighted the issues Seaham now face. Results elsewhere still see Seaham sit in 15th place but with Billingham Town and Guisborough Town next in line for the Star, they have got to put this poor result well out of their minds, otherwise, things may get worse.

Updated on

DIVISION TWO ROUND UP After a 1-0 loss to West Allotment Celtic, the third loss in four games, many had come to the conclusion that this seasons’ Division Two surprise package had peaked. However, wins against Billingham Synthonia and, most recently, the 6-0 demolition of newly promoted Sunderland West End have seen Ryton reclaim third place. The forward trio of Jack Cooper, Scott Jasper and Sam Norris give them the kind of forward line no defender will fancy taking on. Will be interesting to see if Ryton can turn these wins into another run of good form.

I am not quite sure what to make of Heaton Stannington. One week they look like the kind of side that could hold its own in Division One, the next week they flatter to deceive. After being beaten by fellow promotion chasing side Crook Town a fortnight ago, Heaton responded with a 2-0 win against a reasonably strong Easington Colliery side. Currently, Stan sit in sixth place, four points away from a promotion spot, but they will have to work on their consistency.

A good season so far for the side that struggled to a 16th-place finish last season. However, they have hit something of a stumbling block in recent weeks, with defeats against Heaton Stannington and West Allotment Celtic. They do boast two of the more in form attackers in the Division, with both Jack Pounder and Josh HomeJackson in double figures for the season. The key to a late promotion push for Easington? Keeping these two scoring regularly.

Newcastle University have done well in their first season at this level and currently sit smack bang in mid table. Impressively, they are still in touch with those sides chasing that final promotion spot and with the in form Niza Chilufya leading the line, they do have a small chance of doing something nobody really thought they could do. Their last game in the league ended in a 5-5 draw against Carlisle City, showing just how they can compete against the better sides this season.

Unlike Newcastle Uni, Sunderland West End have found it harder to adjust to a new league, with the side in 16th place and with only one win out of their last five. Whilst the addition of Chris Tarn from Darlington Railway Athletic did give the side a boost, the honeymoon period seems to be over, especially after a heavy 6-0 home loss to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion. Games aren’t getting any easier, with Tow Law Town and Crook Town the next in line. Whilst safety in Division Two for next season seems assured, they will no doubt be looking to catch the teams above them to give them as good a finish to the league as possible.

MAD PRE-MATCH RITUALS Putting your left boot on before your right, being the last man out of the changing rooms, hugging your teammates before kickoff. There are hundreds of pre-match rituals across the world of football, however, some are far stranger than others. Here are a few odd ones that we have found.

Did you know that when Pepe Reina was at Liverpool, the Spaniard admitted to a whole range of pre-match rituals, including having cheese and ham toasties and a glass of wine the night before a game, and making sure his car was full of petrol on a match day. Pepe Reina

Did you know that when Real Madrid re-located to their new stadium in 1912, they did not win a trophy for five years. To break the “curse, they took the unusual step of burying a clove of garlic under the centre circle and went on to win the Copa del Rey that season. Real Madrid

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

Goals from Cam Cunningham, Kyle Patton and Gary Ormston helped the Robins return to winning ways, beating Thornaby 3-1 at a rain-soaked Daren Persson Stadium. Shields fell behind early on when a goal line clearance cannoned into the goal off the back of a red shirt. However, Cunningham levelled only minutes later, after rounding the keeper and converting from close range. The Robins then took the lead through Patton, when the club’s top goal scorer finished well to beat the Thornaby keeper. And Ormston wrapped up the three points for the Robins with a third goal midway through the second half. The visitors almost got off to a perfect start when Ian Ward broke through on goal in the second minute, only for Paul New’s excellent challenge helping the Robins to recover. However, only one minute later, Joe Scaife-Wheatley’s freekick wasn’t dealt with in the penalty area, with Callum Patton’s attempted clearance deflecting into the back of the net off Paul New’s back; handing Thornaby the lead. Shields were able to level the score minutes later, when Callum Patton’s excellent through ball released Cunningham on goal, leaving the young winger to round James Dawson before passing the ball into an empty net. Cunningham almost had his second of the game in the 11th minute, having broken free of the Thornaby defence before rounding the keeper once again. However, a goal line clearance from Jordan Wilson denied a certain goal. But with the rain worsening, the Robins caught the Thornaby defence cold in the 21st minute, to take the lead for the first time. Having picked the ball up 25 yards out from goal, Ormston fed his pass through to the unmarked Kyle Patton, before the forward placed his shot past the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Late in the first half, the visitors were pressing hard in search of a leveller, however, the closest they came was when Wilson’s cross into the box was directed just behind Ward, before being cleared to safety. In the 48th minute, the Robins created the first chance of note when Callum Patton’s strike from distance flew over the crossbar. With only one goal separating the two sides, Thornaby knew they were still in with a chance and in the 54th minute, Adam Preston drove towards the Robins goal before his shot from the outside the box was sliced well wide. Shortly afterwards, Shields had an excellent opportunity to extend their lead when Callum Patton’s pass allowed Ormston space to shoot, only for Dawson’s excellent reaction save to deflect the ball behind for a corner. But from the resulting set piece, after the visitors failed to clear the ball, Ormston was on hand to curve the ball past the Thornaby shot-stopper from the centre of the box. The hosts were still surging forward in search of more goals and only a minute after their third, they almost had a fourth, but Campbell’s header, from a Cunningham cross, zipped wide. In an effort to reduce the Robins’ lead to one goal, Thornaby striker Preston tried his luck from a freekick just outside the penalty area in the 65th minute. Despite beating the wall, his shot was parried by the hands of Greg Purvis, before he smothered the ball at the second attempt. Thornaby were pushing more men forward in search of a breakthrough and in the 73rd minute, substitute Liam Cooke’s low drive skimmed narrowly wide of the upright.

Shields were in complete control now and in the 23rd minute, having collected a Chris McDonald cross, Cunningham smartly turned his marker before curling his shot inches wide of the crossbar.

Three minutes after that, having dispossessed substitute Paul Robinson in the centre of the pitch, the visitors streaked forward once again, with Scott Howes’ low cross not finding anyone at the back post to turn the ball in.

Chances were coming thick and fast now and only one minute later, Patton was once again streaking through the Thornaby back line. Despite being tugged down by Wilson, he stayed on his feet before his cross into the box was narrowly missed by Connor Campbell.

After being played through on goal, Ward must have thought he was in with a golden chance of scoring Thornaby’s second of the game with ten minutes to go, only for another outstanding challenge from New to deny the striker at the last moment.

In the 34th minute, a Nick Cassidy freekick was almost spilled at the feet of Ormston by Dawson. Luckily for the Thornaby shot-stopper, he was able to react quickly to smother the ball.

But in truth, despite being put under pressure, Purvis was rarely threatened in the Robins’ goal, with the hosts comfortably holding on for all three points.

PAUL VAN-ZANDVLIET Fan favourite, Paul Van-Zandvliet sits down with the NSFC Media Team and looks back at some of the highlights of his debut season at the club. Ahead of the first El-Coastico of the season, the midfielder is look to continue his success story in the squad. Q; On a personal note, how do you feel your season has gone so far? A: Since the start of the season I think it’s gone pretty well. I have had some good games since coming into the side by I have also had some bad games but everyone is showing me so much support! I really couldn’t have asked for a better team. Q: Having featured quite a bit for the North Shields first team, did you expect to be given such a run of first team football? A: When I first joined the club I thought no not at all. I am so grateful that I’ve been given the chance to play, improve and prove myself as a player to the management and to the supporters. Q: Just as you were hitting form, you suffered an injury that kept you out of action for a number of weeks, how frustrating was that for you and how challenging is it for a footballer to hit their stride once again, especially with the first team doing so well?

A: I feel that the injury came at a very bad time as I was playing well so I was left feeling very frustrated. However, I learnt from it and was able to watch on from the side lines and it only made me want to get back playing! The team is doing great, so it has been good to see and being able to help when I can weather that be on the training pitch, being selected from the start or coming on from the bench. It has been great seeing people show their support for me, the atmosphere has been brilliant so far. Q: When you scored your debut goal for your local club at home to Shildon, what was running through your mind as you ran away to celebrate? A: Honestly, there is no feeling like it! I honestly couldn’t believe I scored so it’s hard to say what I was actually thinking other than the overwhelming feeling of scoring, I can just remember running away and all the lads running towards me and the supporters cheering. Hopefully I get a few more. Q: How important has the experience of Gary Ormston and Paul Robinson been in your development as a footballer? A: It’s been absolutely crucial being with a lot of the experienced players. They always give me advice, Robbo (Robinson) has coached me with Tyne Met for my three years I’ve been there and I’m still learning. Gaz (Ormston) has been a help throughout, coaching me on and off the pitch.

Q: Against Stockton Town, one of your other Tyne Met teammates, Jamie Clark, came on for his debut, impressing against the league leaders. Considering he wasn’t even on the team sheet 30 minutes before kick-off, what did you make of his performance? A: Jamie was class, it really is good to see other young players getting a chance at a highly rated club such as North Shields. It is great to see players such as Cam Cunningham be given the freedom to play as we have all came through Tyne Mets football programme together and now all playing at this level together is special. Q: With Marc Nash the manager of your Tyne Met side as well as Shields, how much does it mean to you that you were chosen to captain your college team? A: It’s always good when your manager trusts you. He’s give me a lot of help throughout my time with Tyne Met and North Shields. Q: Finally, today sees the first 'El Coastico' of the season, a big occasion in the non-league diary, how are you feeling ahead of the big game? A: I feel fired up and ready. With me being from North Shields it’s a massive game for me, I can’t wait to get out there and do everyone proud

Two goals from Gary Day and one from Sean McRoberts helped the Robins complete the league double over Whitley Bay at a wet and windy Hillheads Park. After a goalless first half, it took until the 51st minute for McRoberts to give the visitors the lead, following a long-range shot which took a slight deflection on its way in. Whitley almost replied immediately when Kevin Carr’s shot from the penalty spot was comfortably saved by Greg Purvis. However, having been brought on in the 68th minute for Callum Johnston, Day then bagged two goals in five minutes at the end of the game to secure the Robins second win on the bounce. Off the back of their brilliant win over Hebburn Town last weekend, Shields started the game far stronger than the hosts and in the eighth minute, Ryan Carr’s good play helped release him through on goal before he was tackled by a recovering defender. Despite pleas for a penalty, the referee wasn’t interested and the game continued. As the temperatures began to drop, both teams struggled to put together many realistic chances. Johnston came close for the Robins in the 16th minute, however, his powerful shot was blocked on the line by some heroic defending before the ball was hacked clear. As the game entered the 30th minute, the heavens opened, leaving both players and fans alike drenched. McRoberts almost took everyone’s minds off the weather when his curled effort looked certain to go in, only to see Whitley keeper Tom Flynn acrobatically tip the ball over. Whilst the visitors were beginning to turn the screw, the Seahorses were really struggling to deal with the Robins intensity and in the 33rd minute, luck was the only thing keeping them in the game. After the ever-energetic Johnston found his way into the penalty area, his effort struck the crossbar, bounced back onto the goal line before being booted clear to safety.

The visitors were keeping up their good play from the first half and in the 51st minute, they were rewarded. Having won the ball off an opposing midfielder, McRoberts ran towards the Whitley goal before unleashing one of his trademark thunderbolts at the goal. After a slight deflection, the ball rifled into the back of the net to give the Robins the lead. With the visitors now in front, the Whitley attack finally clicked into gear and in the 59th minute, they really should have drawn level when Kevin Carr collected the ball on the penalty spot, turned his man before striking the ball right down Purvis’ throat. After this chance, the weather really deteriorated, with both sets of fans retreating further and further back into the stands. It took until the 71st minute for the next chance of the game and Whitley, yet again, really should have done better. After Jack Cooper worked his way down the left-hand side of the penalty area, he tried to beat Purvis at his near post, only to hammer the ball into the side netting instead. Not happy with the one goal lead, Nash and the rest of the bench urged the Robins forward. In the 76th minute, McRoberts once again decided to try his luck on Flynn’s goal from range, however, his well-struck effort whistled narrowly over the crossbar. And just as the game seemed to be ebbing out into a 1-0 win for the Robins, substitute Day was on hand to all but seal the three points for the visitors. Following a sensational run by Jack Donnison, the fullback delivered a perfect cross for the striker to connect with from close range, sending the Robins bench into raptures. With time running out, the Seahorses were pushing more and more men forwards in search of a way back into the game, however, a wayward back pass found Day who had all the space in the world to run at the Whitley goal before his delicate shot beat Flynn and put a finishing touch on an impressive performance.

CLUB HISTORY The present Whitley Bay Football Club was formed in 1950 and was then known as Whitley Bay Athletic. From 1950 until 1955 Athletic were members of the Northern Alliance, winning the League Championship once and the League Cup twice. In 1952/53 they became the first amateur team for sixty years to win the Northumberland Senior Cup. In 1958 a limited company was formed, the Athletic dropped from the title and the club joined the Northern League. During the 1960’s Whitley Bay became one of the top amateur clubs in the country. They won the Northern League title in 1964/65 and 1965/66, as well as the League Cup in 1964/65. The Club won the Northumberland Senior Cup six times in ten years. But it was in the Amateur Cup that Whitley rose to national prominence, reaching the semi-finals twice and the quarter finals four times. The quarter final against Hendon in 1965 set the ground record, when 7301 supporters packed into Hillheads Park only to see Hendon win 3-1. The early 1970’s saw Bay’s successes continue with the League Cup being won in 1970/71, and the County Cup in 1970/71 and 1972/73. With the demise of amateur football the Club’s fortunes took a nosedive, culminating in them having to apply for reelection to the League in 1979/80. By the 80’s fortunes were rising again and the club joined the Northern Premier League in 1988. Just a couple of years later the Bay had their best ever run in the FA Cup, when they reached the 3rd Round, going down 1-0 at Rochdale. They had previously won 1-0 at then League side Scarborough, before defeating former winners Preston North End 2-0 in front of the BBC Match of the Day cameras at Hillheads. Whitley won not only the First Division Cup for the second time but also the Championship and promotion to the Premier Division in 1991, where they spent four seasons with a high of 11th in the 1993/94 campaign. However, by the turn of the new millennium Bay were back in the Northern League. A new century marked the beginning of the most successful period in the club’s history, with the 2001/02 season proving truly memorable when they won the FA Vase at Villa Park, thanks to an Ian Chandler header in extra time against Tiptree United. However, only 12 months after leading the team to Vase glory, manager Andy Gowens resigned. The appointment of Ian Chandler as manager in January 2004 proved a masterstroke, with another Vase winner, Steve Cuggy returning as coach. In Chandler’s first full season in charge Whitley won the Northumberland Senior Cup, then in 2006/07 they won the Northern League title, clinching the champion ship on the final day of the season. Having knocked out holders Truro City 3-0 in Cornwall, Whitley reached the 2008 FA Vase semi-final. They lost the first leg 4-0 at Lowestoft but in a fantastic second leg were three up after only 24 minutes but could not manage a crucial fourth. 12 months on Bay took revenge by knocking Lowestoft out at the same stage and became the first north east side to reach the new Wembley where their opponents were Glossop North End. In front of 12,212 fans, goals from Lee Kerr and Paul Chow brought the FA Vase back to Whitley Bay for the second time. In the 2009/10 season Whitley won the Northumberland Senior Cup at St James Park, reached the semi final of the League Cup and for a third successive season finished third in the league. But once again Wembley beckoned and after an epic two legged semi final against Barwell, Whitley reached the Vase Final for the second successive season. The thousands who made the trip from the north east were celebrating after only 21 seconds when Paul Chow scored the fastest goal ever seen at Wembley. Five more goals ensured the Vase would becoming back to Whitley Bay for a record equalling third time. The 6-1 victory over Wroxham was the highest score in the history of the FA Vase Final. 2011 saw yet another third place finish in the league, but once again a memorable FA Vase run saw Whitley reach Wembley for a third consecutive season and an epic final was decided by Paul Chow’s 86th minute winner as they triumphed 3-2. Chow, who had scored in every round, and Kerr, had twice given Whitley the lead as they both set the remarkable record of scoring in three consecutive Vase Finals. So Whitley Bay completed a record breaking hat trick of Vase successes and became the first team ever to win the trophy four times. In November 2011 the Club was honoured with the award of the Freedom of the Borough of North Tyneside. The record breaking 29 match unbeaten run in the competition came to an end at home to West Auckland the following season and in the league they had to settle for 6th place. Since those heady days the club has finished in the top five of the Northern League only twice and after Chandler resigned as manager in 2015, there was been a succession of replacements, with only former Vase winning captain Leon Ryan taking the club to a cup final, when Bay lost to Marske in the League Cup at St James Park. The 2018/19 season saw former Vase winning manager Andy Gowens begin the campaign in the hot seat, with his departure leading to assistant Mick Mulhern being promoted to the role. However, a humbling record 9-0 home defeat by Hebburn Town led to him leaving and former Marske assistant boss Nathan Haslam was left to guide the club to safety in the remaining games. The summer of 2019 has seen an overhaul of the squad by Haslam and his staff and hopes are high that the good times can once again return to Hillheads over the coming months.

Liam has just returned to England after playing in the USA South Carolina United Bantams. After some good performances for the Reserves he recently made his First Team debut

Brad signed for the club during the pre-season after he impressed Manager Nathan Haslam when playing for Shildon. Loads of pace that will worry defences.

A lightening quick striker who has been recruited from South Shields.

A quick player who is often on the score sheet. Mark joins us from Sunderland West End.

Coleby Shepherd (ST)

Jake Martindale (ST)
